Sunday Open Thread: West Wing Week

This week, the President honored Equal Pay Day and signed two executive orders to support efforts to level the playing field for women, pushed for better access to skills-based high school training, hosted the Prime Minister of Tunisia, and traveled with the First Lady to the memorial at Fort Hood and then to Austin, to honor the 50th Anniversary of the Civil Rights Act.

Good Morning! Now here’s a story to start your beautiful Sunday!

Man in Superman Hoodie Helps Rescue Baby from Apartment Fire in East Dallas
    http://media.nbcdfw.com/images/654*368/Tori-Phillips.jpg

    excerpt:
Amid all the destruction and the dozens of displaced residents NBC 5 managed to find some good news at the scene. While going around and helping bang on doors to get people up and out, Regina Whitaker witnessed some fellow residents doing more to try to save lives.

“They were taking their hands and breaking the glass and they pulled that fence to help get a disabled man out,” said Whitaker. “We were just trying to get as many people out as we can from here and in the back. There were people with a baby. They had to drop a baby down.”

Tori Phillips, who happens to love Superman and was wearing a Superman hoodie, caught the baby.

“I’d seen they needed help and they were scared to come down with their baby and I was like I’m right here, I’ll catch ‘em so that’s what I did and then another dude helped get his wife down and then he jumped down and got them to safety,” said Phillips.

Oh they hate cha now Jeb! Can’t be standing up for the brown folks!

    Bush draws boos from conservatives
By Alexandra Jaffe April 12, 2014, 12:28 pm

A mention of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R), a potential 2016 presidential contender, brought boos from a conservative crowd in New Hampshire on Saturday.

Speaking at the New Hampshire Freedom Summit, a gathering of conservative activists and figures organized by Americans for Prosperity and Citizens United, billionaire Donald Trump said Bush’s recent comments on immigrants coming to the U.S. as an “act of love” were “out there.”

“You know, I heard Jeb Bush the other day,” he said, with quiet boos and angry murmurs erupting from the crowd at the mention of Bush’s name.

“And he was talking about people that come into this country illegally, they do it for love,” he continued, with the boos growing louder.

A Counter-Narrative on Black Male Students:

At Central High School’s Black History Month Celebration, the Central and Centennial High School African-American Clubs released a joint video countering the negative images of young African-American males in the media. The students affirmed the following in a video highlighting the successes of young black males within the District:

    • We are not gangsters and thugs.
    • We are employees and volunteers.
    • We are scholars.
    • We are athletes.

“The negative stories told daily in the media and in our culture about our young African-American men tend to ignore their successes and don’t tell the full story about how young Black men are becoming leaders within our community schools,” said Central School Social Worker and African-American Club Sponsors Tiffany Gholson and Barbara Cook, who worked with the students on this effort. “In this video, our students reclaim the narrative of who they are and inspire other students to follow in their footsteps.” In our assembly, we addressed the State of the Youth and highlighted what Black students have overcome from a historical perspective. The assembly also highlighted how overcoming those obstacles has helped make America stronger and urged students of all backgrounds to carry the torch for future generations.

Melissa Harris-Perry Accuses Jay Carney of ‘Mansplaining’ White House Pay Gap
Tommy Christopher on April 12, 2014

Earlier this week, I brought you a neat dissection of how the mainstream news media constructs an attack on the White House in the guise of objective journalism. Reporters from Fox News and ABC News double-teamed Press Secretary Jay Carney using a right-wing study of an apparent White House gender pay gap, and CNN stuck the dismount by carving out the section of Carney’s answer that seemed to validate that talking point. On Saturday morning’s Melissa Harris-Perry show, host Melissa Harris-Perry demonstrated how the same tactic can be used from the left by accusing Jay Carney of “mansplaining” the gap, and similarly clipping his response to suit her narrative.

Look this woman during 2012 would come on every other week and talk about how Mitt Romney could win the election. Then on several occasions she deliberately misinterpreted what the President said. Then she went on TV and made a complete idiot of herself begging for her job. Now she takes a FOX news talking point and runs with it.

The worst thing that ever happened to MHP is the day MSNBC said welcome aboard.

    — —Pelosi arms Dems against Ryan budget – –
    — – – -House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) is arming Democrats in their fight against the Republicans’ latest budget proposal as Congress heads into the long, spring recess.

Democratic leaders have decided that hammering the 2015 budget plan from Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) is a winner. With that in mind, Pelosi’s office has issued an attack guide to each member of her caucus highlighting provisions of the GOP plan that Democrats think will generate the most backlash from voters.
    — -The strategy is designed to contrast the sharp differences between the parties’ economic visions for the country, but also to steer the campaign debate away from President Obama’s healthcare law. That law remains a political liability for Democrats in much of the country, particularly the purple districts that will be the most hotly contested in November.

Suey Park’s Response To Colbert’s Promotion Is Every Bit the Angry Rant You’d Expect

    http://thedailybanter.com/2014/04/suey-parks-response-to-colberts-promotion-is-every-bit-the-angry-rant-youd-expect/

Here imo she sort of does get it

“The entertainment industry has perfected the development of white, cis, straight, male characters. The marginalization of “other voices” — except when those “others” are brought in only to aid in the cheap punch line of a joke — is complete.”

Unfortunately she has a glaring galaxy of a problem. Going after Colbert who was going after Dan Snyder was a swing and a miss. But not calling out the obvious racism of the Republican party is a whole lot worse.

Either she blew it unintentionally or blew it on purpose confirming my suspicions she is working for the GOP

    • Miranda

She really comes across as obnoxious, young and naive as I assumed she was. Sounds like she has the attention span of a flea.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Yeah this fighting a revolution nonsense. A trending hastag is not the same thing as storming the gates.

    • Kennymack1971

Did she ever speak on Michelle Malkin and her racist Twitter thugs latching on to her campaign or no?

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I don’t think so and that’s it in a nutshell Kenny. You go after Colbert but not the people who hate your guts and have said so on numerous occasions. How unserious can you get?

        • AxelFoley

Just like MHP goes after the White House for unequal pay instead of the GOP that’s all for it.

Emos stay shooting themselves in the foot.

          • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Exactly. They just rejected Paycheck Fairness a couple of days ago. And this pea brain instead of putting them on blast, twists herself into knots trying to prove a Republican talking point.

            That’s insane.

    • jds09

I have mixed feelings about this. The Banter would rather spend it’s time diminishing her than addressing her points. This piece is an extended version of “she can’t take a joke” and the “white guy own.” Tiresome.

Park is smart, young and a bit naive. If she’s able to put it together, meaning pick her fights wisely and tie them to boots on the ground she could be a force.

Her ability to loudly connect Asian model minority status to being Anti-black, IMO is one of the reasons she’s been pushed back so hard on.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I agree with you about Chez Pazienza’s criticism of her. By being so dismissive and condescending he in a twisted way was making the case better than she was.

FDA Approves At-Home Heroin Overdose Antidote
    Associated Press

Friends and family will be able to take the first step to save a loved one from an overdose of heroin or powerful painkillers called opioids.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved an easy-to-use device that automatically injects the right dose of an overdose antidote named naloxone before an ambulance arrives. Doctors could prescribe it for family members or caregivers to keep on hand, in a pocket or a medicine cabinet.

Opioids include legal prescription painkillers, such as OxyContin and Vicodin, as well as illegal street drugs like heroin.

Some states have already restored these voting rights. But 35 states don’t let convicts vote while on parole, and 11 states have a lifetime ban on voting.[....] Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) has a companion measure in the House.

Coffee Helps Rwanda Move Forward 20 Years After Genocide

This week marks the 20th anniversary of the start of the Rwandan
Genocide that claimed the lives of up to a million members of that
country’s minority.[....] Inspired by Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s call for “trade – not aid”, Grace Hightower De Niro created the company Grace Hightower & Coffees of Rwanda.

Hightower wanted to establish a venture that could simultaneously empower Rwandans and help them restructure their economy. The passionate initiative is now responsible for creating livelihoods for over 500,000 coffee farmers in Rwanda.[....]

Why Do We Ignore the Emotional Lives of Children?

[....] So often, when visitors toured our school, they commented on the focus and engagement of our students. I would share with them that behind so many of the children was a heartbreaking story, regardless of the appearance of calm. It was a testament to the resilience of the child and the relevance of the learning environment teachers created that a particular student could work in such a thoughtful way.

It was difficult for visitors to imagine that the child they just engaged with was struggling with sometimes overwhelming challenges at home.[....] How is it that we rarely create the space and time to truly understand how these complex emotions shape the children we
educate and our designs for their learning environments?[....]

Being aware of and responsive to a child’s inner life can be painful for the adults who venture there. But responding with anything less than a dedication to understanding and helping children navigate their young but fragile lives is to not be fully present to their reality. Schools that are sensitive to the whole child and build meaningful opportunities to nurture and grow the emotions of children are schools we should look to for guidance and inspiration.

United States Announces $5.15 Billion Settlement of Litigation Against Subsidiaries of Anadarko Petroleum Corp. to Remedy Fraudulent Conveyance Designed to Evade Environmental Liabilities

[....] The bankruptcy court had previously found, in December 2013, that the historic Kerr-McGee Corporation (“Old Kerr-McGee”) fraudulently conveyed assets to New Kerr-McGee to evade its debts, including its liability for environmental clean-up at contaminated sites around the country.

Pursuant to the settlement agreement, the defendants agree to pay $5.15 billion to settle the case, of which approximately $4.4 billion will be paid to fund environmental clean-up and for environmental claims. This is the largest environmental enforcement recovery ever by the Department of Justice.[....]

Which meditation technique is right for you?

[....] Check out the styles of meditation below, and try them out —
play with what works for you, and what doesn’t. Don’t be rigid about
what meditation is, or looks like, or what you think it’s going to feel

work better for you? How about vocalizations? Do you want to focus on something or nothing?

Your particular way into meditation may be different, but the stress relief, reduced anger, feelings of well-being, lowered blood pressure, and other benefits are available to everyone. For a breakdown of some of the meditation techniques, and exactly how to do them, the video below gives a good outline (skip to 1:10).[....]

Nancy LeTourneau: An Open Letter To My “Disappointed” Democratic Friends

Dear Disappointeds: Back in 2010 you told us that you were disappointed in the President you helped elect. And because of that, you weren’t motivated enough to vote in the midterms. While I don’t share your disappointment, I want to say that I hear you. Now we’re facing another midterm election and we have the benefit of hindsight to tell us what changed as a result of your lack of enthusiasm. Sure, you might have wanted single payer and a larger stimulus package.

But you have to admit that Obamacare is doing an awful lot of good. And perhaps you should read Michael Grunwald’s book The New New Deal to learn how the American Recovery Act was way more than many of us thought it was at the time. Its “gut check” time for all of us. I don’t know about you, but after these last four years I’m actually psyched to get back to Democrats arguing with other Democrats over HOW MUCH change we want to see rather than being pissed at Republicans all the time for their total obstruction. There’s a lot riding on this one. I hope we can all work together to make that happen.

Didn’t PBO say we’re the change we’ve been waiting for? Yet these clowns think he can do it all by his lonesome. Smartypants is much more magnanimous than I ever could be. I don’t forgive these whinies because a lot of them are racist (oh, I know I just slapped them in the face), hence the reduction in white votes in 4 years time. And, a lot of them voted for PBO because they wanted to be cool and “down” with black folk, because they really can’t stand the label of racism. And I don’t make everything about race. Just call it as I see it- at work, on line, in conversations. We are only given a smidgeon of opportunity to do great things, and when we don’t deliver in that short period, and against all and every odd, we are chastised as incompetents, because we didn’t satisfy someone’s idea of merit. Example- look how BB King was treated a week or so ago. Oh, to be so privileged as to think the weekend MUST be spectacular so I can fly-fish, surf, go to my mountain cabin, head to the shore, yada yada yada. Other than this, I am having a great spring day…LOL !

The U.S. Navy Just Announced The End Of Big Oil And No One Noticed

[....] The Navy appears to have achieved the Holy Grail of energy independence – turning seawater into fuel: After decades of experiments, U.S. Navy scientists believe they may have solved one of the world’s great challenges: how to turn seawater into fuel. The new fuel is initially expected to cost around $3 to $6 per gallon, according to the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, which has already flown a model aircraft on it.

Curiously, this doesn’t seem to be making much of a splash (no pun
intended) on the evening news.[....] Oil is only getting more expensive as the easy-to-reach deposits are tapped so this truly is, as it’s being called, a “game changer.”[....]

Trouble with math? New school course uses piano music to help students

An Atlanta musician believes he’s found a way to help teenagers overcome trouble with math and algebra. Marcus Blackwell, a classically-trained jazz and gospel pianist, teaches middle school and high school students math by way of teaching them new songs on the piano, even if they’ve never played a note in their lives.[....]

Blackwell uses simple tunes that teens know from the radio, basing
lesson plans around the songs, assigning numbers to each note and chord change. Though most students in his classes aren’t musicians and don’t know piano, the class is typically able to complete one song by the end of each period.[....] Blackwell started with five schools last fall and now works with 15.[....]

    Republicans, Racism, and Reasonable Suspicion
Tommy Christopher on April 11, 2014

Jonathan Chait of New York Magazine has been making a spectacle of himself lately, most recently tying himself in knots trying to explain away his essay on race in the Obama Era. On Thursday night’s All In with Chris Hayes, his point seems to have evolved into a plea for fairness to Republicans, while conceding that everything about Republicanism is legitimately racist. He told Chris Hayes that “you can go to almost any issue and see a racial dynamic, and I really think you can, and you can legitimately,” but somehow, legitimately identifying those racial dynamics is somehow unfair, and contributes to a “poisonous dynamic.”

I don’t get it, and I don’t agree with either end of that hypothesis. There are many issues that either don’t have a racial dynamic, or have racial dynamics that intersect the partisan divide, and discussing those issues that do have a racial dynamic in racial terms isn’t just fair, it is essential. However, on Chait’s own terms, if every partisan issue can legitimately be viewed as racial, how could it possibly be unfair to discuss that? We’ll have to wait for Chait’s next appearance on MSNBC to explain that, but in the meantime, we can look for clues in what he actually wrote, and in his cherry-picked response to critics.

The most problematic aspect of Chait’s “The Color of His Presidency” was his assertion that “the ability to label a person racist represents, in 21st-century America, real and frequently terrifying power,” an absurd characterization that’s only sweetened by his comparison of MSNBC commentators’ examination of racial issues to Stop and Frisk.

    • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

There was no need to be even-handed and that was the mistake Chait made thus guaranteeing he would be lit up on twitter and everywhere else.

      • Adriane Farray

It seems to me, Chait’s defense relies on that old canard that POC are quick to play the ‘race card’. That line of argument has great currency in the white dominated MSM and other rarified quarters, yet comes apart under scrutiny. First, it assumes that AA’s and other POC are incapable of correctly assessing a given situation and developing an accurate analysis. Secondly and perhaps most importantly, white liberals like Chait are too eager give their fellow whites the benefit of the doubt. Believing most whites to be earnest and honorable, they’re too quick to dismiss the possibility that whites could or would act out of plain bad faith or malice. Having boxed himself into this precarious position, Chait accuses his critics, rather unconvincingly of oversensitivity. Where, is Chait’s evidence that Blacks and other POC are unable to correctly identify racial bias when they see it? It would seem to me, given the weight of evidence and history that Blacks are uniquely qualified to detect racism. What’s Chait’s response?

        • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

          Good stuff Adriane.

He can’t bring himself to believe POC know what they’re talking about with regards to racism. That we can spot it ten miles away and most of us would rather not deal with it but all to often it’s forced on us.

          Who’s Chait kidding?

          • Adriane Farray

Exactly, in my experience, if anything, incidents of racial discrimination are underreported. POC are reluctant to call out their attackers and persecutors because they know they’ll catch a ton of crap from other bigots and ‘allies’ like Chait. We don’t complain nearly as often as we should because many of us sadly, conclude it’s not worth the trouble.

          • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

And Chait’s response spoke volumes. No reflection. No hey maybe I should have asked somebody non-white. He got angry and dug in his heels. He blew it and doesn’t have the intestinal fortitude to admit it.

          • Adriane Farray

I mean heaven forbid that an African American might be right and I’m wrong. White privilege on full display. What a chump.

        • Admiral_Komack

I think your points 1 & 2 are on point,
and regarding point 2, some people use that to give Republicans the benefit of the doubt (while blasting Democrats, of course).

All eyes on Minneapolis as Southwest Corridor project advances

The Southwest Corridor light-rail project won a major victory last week, but now its supporters will learn whether Minneapolis will play spoiler. To entice Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges and the City Council to drop their opposition, Southwest supporters plan to offer new development around future Minneapolis light-rail stops and plenty of construction jobs, and to agree to explore bus and even
streetcar links to the rail stations. So far, Minneapolis has resisted
    deals.

Just a month ago, its City Council unanimously opposed a plan to
spend $160 million to hide the light-rail line in tunnels to satisfy
homeowners concerned about the noise and sight of trains running at ground level. But cracks began to appear in that resistance last week after the Metropolitan Council, the agency overseeing the project, approved the tunnel plan as part of the $1.68 billion project. Now it goes to Minneapolis for its consent.[....]

Watching the Obamas Watch “A Raisin in the Sun”
    Posted by Michael Schulman

On Thursday, the cast of the Broadway revival of “A Raisin in the Sun” was told that a “high-level official” would be coming to the show the next night. Who could it be? Kathleen Sebelius had just resigned—maybe she had more time for theatregoing? Word got out on Friday afternoon: the Obamas were coming to Broadway. By seven o’clock that night, Forty-Seventh Street had been partitioned off, and the Barrymore Theatre was swarming with security guys—not an unwelcome sight, after the Times reported that Broadway has had a tough time attracting men.

    ………………………………..

A woman announced over the speaker: “Ladies and gentlemen, out of respect for the actors please take your seats so the show can begin.” The lights went down, and the door to the street swung open. A stream of people, including the President, the First Lady (in black), and Valerie Jarrett, snaked through to the back of the house and then down the aisle. Ignoring the announcer’s pleas, the audience leaped to its feet—this usually happens at the end of the show—and camera flashes twinkled in the darkened theatre. The Obamas shook some hands and took their seats.
