Sunday POU Blues Brunch Open Thread

It’s Sunday POU Family and lurkers. It’s time to sit back and enjoy the sounds of Chris Thomas King.

medium_chris thomas king headshot

Chris Thomas King (born October 14, 1962) is an American New Orleans, Louisiana-based blues musician and actor. King was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, United States. He is the son of blues musician Tabby Thomas. He has won awards including “Album of the Year” for both Grammy Award and Country Music Awards. King has sold more than 10 million records in the United States. He is featured playing the part of Tommy Johnson in the Coen brothers’ 2000 film O Brother, Where Art Thou?. He is also featured in Down From the Mountain and More Music From Ray soundtracks.

King is known as the pioneer of rap/blues fusion. He conceived the first sample-based blues concept album in the early 1990s by writing and producing the first all-rap/blues album for RCA Records titled 21st Century Blues… From Da Hood.

As an entrepreneur King took control of his master recordings in the early 1990s, forming 21st Century Blues Records. He also established a publishing company, Young Blues Rebel, LLC. 21st Century Records signed the New Orleans Ninth Ward rap/blues duo the 21C-B-Boyz and the London, England based NuBlues, to 21st Century Blues Records in 2003.

King’s acting career includes prominent roles in several films, including two music-related films. In the Oscar-winning film Ray he plays band leader and blues guitar player Lowell Fulson. During production he collaborated with Ray Charles in scoring the film. In O Brother Where Art Thou?, he portrays a skilled blues guitarist who claims he sold his soul to the devil in exchange for his skill on guitar. The character is based on blues musicians Tommy Johnson and Robert Johnson, both of whom have been linked to selling their soul to the devil at a rural Mississippi crossroads. King also accompanies the film’s band the Soggy Bottom Boys on guitar; his rendition of “Hard Time Killing Floor Blues” was recorded live during filming and included on the film’s Grammy-award-winning soundtrack.

    —- Eric Holder’s liberation – -:>)
—–Last February, Attorney General Eric Holder was so worn out from a House committee’s four-hour grilling over the Fast and Furious fiasco that he couldn’t get up from the witness table. Amid the post-hearing commotion, a couple of aides swooped in, grabbed the elbows of the man who’d already been suffering from a back strain, and hoisted him to his feet.
Wednesday, House Republicans spent another four hours working Holder over — on the seized AP phone records, the IRS scandal, the conduct of his civil rights division chief who’s now nominated for Labor secretary and more.Holder smiled and scolded, took his time, parrying questions with a confident bluntness. At one point, he even cut off Rep. Darrel

    – —And at the end, he stood up on his own, chatted with several lawmakers who approached him, and walked calmly out of the room. – — HAH! :>)

    – — He was on — -FI-YAH!! – — :>)

Politico is a trip…I seriously doubt that Holder had to be helped up from the table after the Fast and Furious bullshit. I distinctly remember Holder putting a serious smack down on them that went viral. This is the money quote:

“I have to tell you that for me to really be affected by what happened, I’d have to have respect for the people who voted in that way,” Holder told ABC News in February. “And I didn’t, so it didn’t have that huge an impact on me.”

This is what they refuse to believe to the point of creating a web of lies that support their egos…Holder does not give a fuck.

What do they mean by “gasp”?? I see they’re gonna trying to spin PBO’s commencement address just like Miranda said. And the Twitter Warriors will be right there to push back against ANY shidiggedy!

A Washington ‘whodunit’: who fed bogus Benghazi ‘emails’ to the media? **UPDATE: a ‘glaring omission…’**
Posted on May 18, 2013 by jreid

**UPDATE: Scroll to the bottom of the post (I know it’s long…) for a bit of TRR sleuthing…

The revelation this week that emails provided to key congressional committees by the White House in response to Benghazi-hysteria among Republicans, may have been altered before being leaked to the conservative Weekly Standard and to ABC News reporter Jonathan Karl touched off speculation in at least some media quarters.

At issue, who altered or misrepresented the content of emails from Deputy National Security Adviser for Strategic Communications and Speechwriting, Ben Rhodes, and from State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, to make the White House and State Department appear to have misled the American people, in a potential Benghazi cover up?

Dan was also on Fox with Chris Wallace this morning and I caught part of that interview – Dan was AWESOME

Obama Advisor Dan Pfeiffer: Republicans Owe Susan Rice An “Apology”

DAN PFEIFFER, OBAMA SENIOR ADVISOR: What [the Benghazi emails] absolutely do show, beyond a shadow of the doubt is that the Republican allegation that the White House, the State Department, someone else changed the CIA’s assessment for political reasons. That has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to be false. So hopefully we can put this all behind us. And, frankly, I think that many of the Republicans who have been talking about this, now that they have seen the e-mails owe Ambassador Rice an apology for the things they said about her in the wake of the attack.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: An apology for what?

DAN PFEIFFER: For accusing her of misleading the country. For saying that she didn’t — that somehow we were — she was involved in some sort of political whitewash of what happened there. What she said was what the intelligence community believed at the time. And when we got further information, we told the American people what that was. That’s how people know what happened here. http://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2013/05/19/obama_advisor_dan_pfeiffer_republicans_owe_susan_rice_an_apology.html

Obama’s approval rating up despite scandals

President Barack Obama was riding high in a new opinion poll released on Sunday showing that 53 percent of Americans approve of the way he’s doing his job, despite a flurry of recent scandals.

The survey of 923 adults by CNN and the ORC International polling organization found that 45 percent of respondents disapprove of Obama’s job performance.

In early April, the same poll gave the president a 51 percent approval rating, showing that Obama is holding steady despite a brutal week in which the White House attempted to control damage from three simultaneous scandals which threatened to derail his agenda.more here: http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2013/05/19/obamas-approval-rating-up-despite-scandals/

Public just doesn’t care, and doesn’t see it the same way as the GOP and beltway media sees things. This is actually quite bad for both institutions.

For people wondering how PBO’s ultra-positive speech would be spun by the media:

Obama to black grads: ‘No longer any room for excuses’

This is not a fair takeaway from the context or totality of the speech by any objective measure (thank you thank you to POU for hosting a live thread so that we could here it straight without this type of spin). This is a troll, aimed at PBO’s African American base. Can’t be a coincidence that both the First Lady’s and the President’s speeches are being furiously spun as regressive towards the black community.

    • Miranda

      Gee…why am I not surprised?

      • gn

You called it last night. This is past trifling. It’s taking something positive aimed at black youth and telling them that the First Lady and President view them negatively instead.

ABC’s Jonathan Karl to CNN: ‘I regret the email was quoted incorrectly’
    Posted byCNN Political Unit

(CNN) – Jonathan Karl, chief White House correspondent for ABC News, addressed criticism of his reporting on the Benghazi talking points controversy, saying in a statement to CNN that he regrets the inaccuracy of his report.

“Clearly, I regret the email was quoted incorrectly and I regret that it’s become a distraction from the story, which still entirely stands. I should have been clearer about the attribution. We updated our story immediately,” he said in the statement to Howard Kurtz, host of CNN’s “Reliable Sources.”

Yahoo Inc.’s YHOO -0.23% board has approved a deal to acquire blogging startup Tumblr, people familiar with the matter said Sunday.

Yahoo has agreed to pay $1.1 billion in cash for the company, one of the people said. Tumblr would continue to operate largely as an independent business, the people said.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether Tumblr’s board had also approved the deal. Spokesmen for Yahoo and Tumblr didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment.

Jon Karl tryna get back in good I see….so Issa knew about the IRS investigation LAST YEAR?!??! If Issa knew about it already and he himself had raised the question of improper questioning of these tea party groups, why didn’t they holler about it before the election? Because they knew there was no there there.

Republicans Informed of IRS Investigation Last Year

Much has been made of the fact that seniorTreasury Department officials were told about the investigation into the treatment of tea party groups in June 2012 – months before last year’s the Presidential election. Republicans who requested the investigation were also told about it at approximately the same time.

In a letter dated July 11, 2012, the man who conducted the investigation – IRS inspector general J. Russell George – wrote to Rep. Darrell Issa, the chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, telling him that he was investigating the issue and offering to keep him updated as the investigation progressed.

ABC’s Jon Karl Posts to Twitter, Still Refuses to Retract False Story
    The hole’s getting deeper

Posted a little while ago on Twitter by ABC News’s Jonathan Karl:

I should have stated, as I did elsewhere, the reporting was based on a summary provided by a source. I apologize for the mistake. 2/2

    Jonathan Karl ‏@jonkarl1h
In case you missed it, I sincerely regret the error I made describing an email from Ben Rhodes. 1/2

    The facts are:
Karl stated in no uncertain terms that he had “obtained” the emails. This was FALSE.

Karl’s story put the made-up email in quotation marks, when it was NOT A QUOTE.

Politicians furious over Bronx bus company’s ‘Ghetto’ tour

    Last Updated: 9:42 AM, May 19, 2013
    Posted: 10:48 PM, May 18, 2013

Tourists are crowding onto a Bronx bus tour that promises “a ride through a real New York City ‘GHETTO’ ” — and local politicians are furious.

Three times a week, Real Bronx Tours takes riders — mainly white Europeans and Australians — on a trip that includes stops at food-pantry lines and a “pickpocket” park.

Last week, on the first stop of the $45 tour, guide Lynn Battaglia, from Pittsburgh, pointed out a housing project. She then mocked the Grand Concourse, modeled after a Parisian boulevard.

“Do you feel like we’re on the Champs-Elysées?” she teased a couple from Paris.

Judge rules tea party group a PAC, not a nonprofit

A Travis County district court judge ruled this week that a Houston-based tea party group is not a nonprofit corporation as it claims, but an unregistered political action committee that illegally aided the Republican Partythrough its poll-watching efforts during the 2010 elections.

The summary judgment by Judge John Dietz upheld several Texas campaign finance laws that had been challenged on constitutional grounds by King Street Patriots, a tea party organization known for its “True the Vote” effort to uncover voter fraud.

The ruling grew out of a 2010 lawsuit filed by the Texas Democratic Party against the King Street Patriots. TheDemocrats charged that the organization made unlawful political contributions to the Texas Republican Party and various Republican candidates by training poll watchers in cooperation with the party and its candidates and by holding candidate forums only for GOP candidates.

Benghazi Bullshit: The Real Scandal is the Media Pretending that Republicans Aren’t Lying

[….] The real scandal, the only scandal, is that your “free press” is once again pretending as if Republicans are not lying to them.[….] Your media hasn’t the guts to call ABC out, just like they got Fox’s back when the President said they were not a news organization. It’s a big club, and the only reason you got the Tapper story is probably because Tapper has a grudge against Karl.[….] After all, we all remember when Tapper was carrying GOP Benghazi water, so concerned that the administration might have not been honest –based on nothing but Republicans claiming so during an election — oh, but, integrity![….] [….] I don’t give a crap why Tapper went all Benghazi bombshell on Karl, Karl set himself up for it.

But who is going to go after the rest of the walking dead corporate puppets? Do they even care about the truth? If they did, Republican Benghazi bullshit would not be headlining. The headline right now should be that ABC doesn’t see anything wrong with what Karl did, and apparently our misinformed public couldn’t give a crap either. Kim Kardashian! Sparkles! Oh, yes, and Obama is Nixon/Bush only worse. Wrap that up with a bullshit bow, because that is all you are getting for news from the bullshit factory that brought you WMD as a real thing.
