Thursday Afternoon Thread: 45 Years Ago Today

45 years ago today, The United States Senate, by a 69-11 vote, confirmed Thurgood Marshall as the 96th Associate Justice to the United States Supreme Court.

And now we have members of the Senate and House that want to roll back civil rights, voters rights, women’s rights and labor rights. Do we want another Thurgood on the bench or another Clarence?

ICYMI – The President was on Redditt yesterday!

(CBS News) Members of the link-sharing website Reddit had a chance to directly ask President Barack Obama questions on Wednesday. The President participated in a forum commonly referred to as an AMA – or “ask me anything.”

“Hey, everyone: I’ll be taking your questions online today. Ask yours here,” the President tweeted, to confirm his identity on the website. The President went on to include a photo of himself typing at his computer on the Reddit AMA thread.

“Hey everybody – this is barack. Just finished a great rally in Charlottesville, and am looking forward to your questions. At the top, I do want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with folks who are dealing with Hurricane Isaac in the Gulf, and to let them know that we are going to be coordinating with state and local officials to make sure that we give families everything they need to recover. Verification photo: http://i.imgur.com/oz0a7.jpg“- PresidentObama

Reddit is a link-sharing community that has a sub-section called “IAmA,” which allows anyone to post a thread for people to ask unfiltered questions. Within 15-minutes the thread, titled “I am Barack Obama, President of the United States — AMA,” had already received 1,333 comments.

The President appearing on a Reddit AMA is a huge triumph for the community. The site has featured politicians such as Ron Paul and celebrities including Stephen Colbert in the past, but Obama has been the most prominent host of an AMA session.

Although the site feels like a small community, it casts a wide net. In January, Reddit reported over 2 billion page views and over 34 million unique visitors.

So what did the Reddit community want to know? The President allotted 30 minutes for the AMA and answered these 10 questions.

“We know how Republicans feel about protecting Internet Freedom. Is Internet Freedom an issue you’d push to add to the Democratic Party’s 2012 platform?” – Sharkgirl

“Internet freedom is something I know you all care passionately about; I do too. We will fight hard to make sure that the internet remains the open forum for everybody – from those who are expressing an idea to those to want to start a business. And although their will be occasional disagreements on the details of various legislative proposals, I won’t stray from that principle – and it will be reflected in the platform.” – PresidentObama

“Are you considering increasing funds to the space program?” – ormirian

“Making sure we stay at the forefront of space exploration is a big priority for my administration. The passing of Neil Armstrong this week is a reminder of the inspiration and wonder that our space program has provided in the past; the curiosity probe on mars is a reminder of what remains to be discovered. The key is to make sure that we invest in cutting edge research that can take us to the next level – so even as we continue work with the international space station, we are focused on a potential mission to a asteroid as a prelude to a manned Mars flight.”

“What was the most difficult decision that you had to make during this term?” – FifthSurprise

“The decision to surge our forces in afghanistan. Any time you send our brave men and women into battle, you know that not everyone will come home safely, and that necessarily weighs heavily on you. The decision did help us blunt the taliban’s momentum, and is allowing us to transition to afghan lead – so we will have recovered that surge at the end of this month, and will end the war at the end of 2014. But knowing of the heroes that have fallen is something you never forget.” – PresidentObama

“What is the first thing you’ll do on November 7th, win or lose?” – daveforamerica

“Win or lose, I’ll be thanking everybody who is working so hard – especially all the volunteers in field offices all across the country, and the amazing young people in our campaign offices.” – PresidentObama

“What’s the recipe for the White House’s beer?” – silent1mezzo

“It will be out soon! I can tell from first hand experience, it is tasty.” – PresidentObama

“Who’s your favourite Basketball player?” – karlfranks

“Jordan – I’m a Bulls guy.” – PresidentObama

“What are you going to do to end the corrupting influence of money in politics during your second term?” – suzmerk

“Money has always been a factor in politics, but we are seeing something new in the no-holds barred flow of seven and eight figure checks, most undisclosed, into super-PACs; they fundamentally threaten to overwhelm the political process over the long run and drown out the voices of ordinary citizens. We need to start with passing the Disclose Act that is already written and been sponsored in Congress – to at least force disclosure of who is giving to who. We should also pass legislation prohibiting the bundling of campaign contributions from lobbyists. Over the longer term, I think we need to seriously consider mobilizing a constitutional amendment process to overturn Citizens United (assuming the Supreme Court doesn’t revisit it). Even if the amendment process falls short, it can shine a spotlight of the super-PAC phenomenon and help apply pressure for change.” – PresidentObama

“I am recent law school graduate. Despite graduating from a top school, I find myself unemployed with a large student loan debt burden. While I’m sure my immediate prospects will improve in time, it’s difficult to be optimistic about the future knowing that my ability to live a productive life — to have a fulfilling career, to buy a house, to someday raise a family — is hampered by my debt and the bleak economic outlook for young people. I know that I’m not alone in feeling this way. Many of us are demoralized. Your 2008 campaign was successful in large part due to the efforts of younger demographics. We worked for you, we campaigned for you, and we turned out in record numbers to vote for you. What can I say to encourage those in similar situations as I am to show up again in November? What hope can you offer us for your second term?” – hmlee

“I understand how tough it is out there for recent grads. You’re right – your long term prospects are great, but that doesn’t help in the short term. Obviously some of the steps we have taken already help young people at the start of their careers. Because of the health care bill, you can stay on your parent’s plan until you’re twenty six. Because of our student loan bill, we are lowering the debt burdens that young people have to carry. But the key for your future, and all our futures, is an economy that is growing and creating solid middle class jobs – and that’s why the choice in this election is so important. The other party has two ideas for growth – more taxs cuts for the wealthy (paid for by raising tax burdens on the middle class and gutting investments like education) and getting rid of regulations we’ve put in place to control the excesses on wall street and help consumers. These ideas have been tried, they didnt work, and will make the economy worse. I want to keep promoting advanced manufacturing that will bring jobs back to America, promote all-American energy sources (including wind and solar), keep investing in education and make college more affordable, rebuild our infrastructure, invest in science, and reduce our deficit in a balanced way with prudent spending cuts and higher taxes on folks making more than $250,000/year. I don’t promise that this will solve all our immediate economic challenges, but my plans will lay the foundation for long term growth for your generation, and for generations to follow. So don’t be discouraged – we didn’t get into this fix overnight, and we won’t get out overnight, but we are making progress and with your help will make more.” – PresidentObama

“How are you going help small businesses in 2013 and 2014? and what if any bills are you going to impliment for small businesses, in 2013, and 2014?” – partyinyourmouth

“We’ve really focused on this since I came into office – 18 tax cuts for small business, easier funding from the SBA. Going forward, I want to keep taxes low for the 98 percent of small businesses that have $250,000 or less in income, make it easier for small business to access financing, and expand their opportunities to export. And we will be implementing the Jobs Act bill that I signed that will make it easier for startups to access crowd-funding and reduce their tax burden at the start-up stage.” – PresidentObama

“How do you balance family life and hobbies with, well, being the POTUS?” – gobearss

“It’s hard – truthfully the main thing other than work is just making sure that I’m spending enough time with michelle and the girls. The big advantage I have is that I live above the store – so I have no commute! So we make sure that when I’m in DC I never miss dinner with them at 6:30 pm – even if I have to go back down to the Oval for work later in the evening. I do work out every morning as well, and try to get a basketball or golf game in on the weekends just to get out of the bubble. Speaking of balance, though, I need to get going so I’m back in DC in time for dinner. But I want to thank everybody at reddit for participating – this is an example of how technology and the internet can empower the sorts of conversations that strengthen our democracy over the long run. AND REMEMBER TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER – if you need to know how to register, go to Gottaregister.com By the way, if you want to know what I think about this whole reddit experience – NOT BAD!” – PresidentObama

Brooklyn-based NY Assembly candidate: ‘Negrohood’ just ‘a typo’

A Brooklyn-based primary candidate running for the New York State Assembly claims that a mailer that was sent out by his campaign calling one area a “negrohood” was an unintentional typo. The New York Daily News reports that Bill Akselrod, who is running against Democratic Assemblyman Steven Cymbrowitz, apologized yesterday, taking “full responsibility” for what he said was an “inadvertent error.”[....]

    • Miranda

Hmmmm, strangely, when I type Negrohood – it is automatically underlined for spellcheck. I must have the special spellcheck that is only programmed for darkies – so it catches stuff like that. Obviously for Cymbrowitz, there are words that exist that his spellcheck recognizes that mine would not.

Fox News Dumps Sarah Palin and Cancels All of Her Interviews

Sarah Palin has taken to Facebook to complain that Fox News has canceled all of her scheduled interviews during their coverage of the Republican Convention.[....] Fox News VP of Programming Bill Shine gave Palin the big blow off, “Our plans changed based on the fact that the RNC condensed the schedule of speeches from four nights to three. We look forward to having Governor Palin back as soon as we can.”

By as soon as he can, he means Sarah Palin won’t see any airtime until after the Republican Convention. Sarah Palin is now officially unwelcome in the Republican Party, and I’ll give you three guesses who got her booted off of Fox News. Here’s a hint. His name rhymes with Ditt Lomney.

When the Romney people made sure that Sarah Palin wasn’t invited to the Republicans’ party, the message was clearly sent that Romney blames Palin for the Republican defeat in 2008. They see the polls. The Romney folks know that she is toxic to the very women and Independent voters that they are unsuccessfully trying to court.[....]

Obama Campaign On Ryan’s RNC Speech: ‘He Lied’
Tom Kludt 1:32 PM EDT, Thursday August 30, 2012

Stephanie Cutter, deputy campaign manager for the Obama campaign, didn’t mince words on Thursday when asked about vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan’s factually dubious speech at the Republican National Convention.

Cutter told MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell that many of Ryan’s claims — including the oft-invoked attack on the president for the closure of a Wisconsin auto plant that was actually shuttered when former President George W. Bush was still in office — were more than merely misleading.

“Well, you know, Andrea, there’s no delicate way to put this, but he lied,” Cutter said. “He blatantly lied and brazenly. A number of different things have been fact checked by members of the media, independent fact checkers.”

    MORE: http://livewire.talkingpointsmemo.com/entry/obama-campaign-on-ryan-rnc-speech-he-lied

    • Tafr

I have to say this has been an amazing summer. I cannot believe how bold Ryan is with the lying just bold as hell. I guess they thought the media was going to let it slide but the internets are back here for their ass. What gets me is not only did he lie but he brought Bush back front and center. The last thing they want to do is to remind people that this shitty economy started under Bush but Ryan did just that.

      • GN

Romnyan has no other campaign strategy. They seriously have no plan other than to lie.

        • Aquagranny911

Didn’t their campaign actually say out loud that the strategy (?) is to just actually keep lying?

      • GN

Romnyan has no other campaign strategy. They seriously have no plan other than to lie.

    • conlakappa

Now we’re up to “factually dubious?” Stephanie Cutter cut right to the chase: he lied. Video: Hanging in the Balance: A Head Start for Low-Income Kids

[....]This video spotlights what’s at stake if Congress fails to act to avert the automatic cuts to the area of the budget that funds many human needs programs, including Head Start. As many as 80,000 children could lose access to Head Start’s comprehensive services and more than 30,000 teachers, administrators, and support staff could lose their jobs. At a time when one in four children under age 5 are living in poverty, we need a strong Head Start program now more than ever.

H/T Lauren Santa Cruz and Katie Wright @ Center for American Progress

    • Aquagranny911

I know a lot of people who work for Head Start including a couple of extended family members. I’ve been enlisting them to talk to all their co-workers about how crucial it is to vote for PBO & Dems if they want to keep their jobs. I also know a lot of parents whose kiddos have benefited from this program & I’m getting the word to them as well.

I worked briefly for Head Start in it’s earliest days. It’s a fine program that has helped so many children over the years. Right now Head Start has been struggling with budget cuts, restrictions, & waiting lists for the kiddos who need it most.

Head Start is a program that needs to be expanded & fully funded for the future of some of our most vulnerable children.

So apparently Michael Moore is convinced that Rmoney will win in November. I think he’s just wishing for that, so he can get back to making his millions off telling everybody how badly the government is screwing up. I haven’t been there today, but last night, as WE were seeing the truth and dumping on the Rep KKKonvention, she was posting on TOD that she does not believe polls are biased towards Reps, ie, the candidates are in fact, in a dead heat, and the Obama campaign staff sucks eggs. I do not know if she got any pushback, as looked off ASAP. I had wanted to see any vids Chips may have posted. I wonder if I’m the only reader Chips is losing because she keeps letting the Dog out.
Recidivism is high with the Bad Lounge for me :(

          • Aquagranny911

Chips has lost several regular commenters for a variety of reasons. A couple were Latinos who got piled onto at one point during the SSM fiasco for trying to have a real discussion of their concerns. And at another for trying to express diverse opinions to some of the ‘favored’ commenters.

When you get told you have “no right” to your own opinion. You do tend to move on.

There is a certain “party line” there that must not be crossed & I do not mean that of supporting PBO.

I still visit that site for the great pics & video clips. I do skim comments for the good links, avoiding the BS but I don’t post comments myself.

          • cosine

I wonder what their real agenda is.

          • conlakappa

That reminds me that I wanted to mention to you that latino and gay groups in Maryland are working together. We have an equality bill on the November ballot. Any way, you can find it at the WashPost Web site. It was in yesterday’s edition.

          • Aquagranny911

            WOOT WOOT!!!

I’ll look it up. I do get weary of the BS that Latinos like AA’s are against LGBT’s.

Like we don’t have any gay family members ourselves.

Even very conservative Latinos are understanding that this is a rights issue not a moral or religious issue.

          • edp4bho

I’m home. Yep, but a commenter set her behind straight there. Told her it would be akin to breaking the law. BWD is a bit narcissistic, IMO. They are much to lenient with her, when no one else is allowed to freak out.

        • Aquagranny911

I saw her whining ass at TOD the other day, concern trolling & telling PBO how to mind his business. I almost, but not quite, broke my embargo of commenting on that site to give her “a few words” but decided to “not cast my pearls before swine” as they say.

Sorry if that offends anyone but I have no more use for that kind of caca. Any respect or regard I ever had for her has gone…”like dust in the wind”….

          • gc

“Offends” ?? LOL As you were posting that I was posting similar ^^^ Keith goes overreactive too, but he will listen. Ms Dog gets hostile. What makes her think she is brighter than BHO? I’M not and I humbly and HAPPILY admit it!

Aw, I think Keith has a bad case of ADHD but he seems to be working his butt off for OFA and he does respond well to “talk me down”….

Imo, he’s an okay guy, just a bit hyper & a worrier. BWD is another kettle of fish entirely.

        • gc

I caught that BWD paranoia attack on TOD last night. I was disgusted. I was so close to telling her off, but what would be the point. Came to the Live Chat instead and was talked down by POUers.

Appeals court rejects Texas voter-ID law
    By Steve Benen – Thu Aug 30, 2012 1:00 PM EDT.129

This is an important setback for Republicans’ voter-suppression tactics.

A federal court on Thursday barred Texas from implementing a controversial voter identification law, saying the measure would likely curtail the ability of minorities to vote.

A three-judge panel of the U.S. District Court in Washington, D.C., said the evidence showed the law’s impact would “fall most heavily on the poor and that a disproportionately high percentage of African-Americans and Hispanics in Texas live in poverty.”

The law, passed by the Republican-dominated Texas legislature in 2011, required voters to present one of six forms of photo ID before casting their ballots.

As Bloomberg News noted, today’s decision “marks the first time a U.S. court weighed in on the Obama administration’s effort to use the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to block a state from requiring photo ID to vote.”

    A pass-fail test
By Steve Benen – Thu Aug 30, 2012 10:27 AM EDT

At the Republican National Convention last night, Paul Ryan told so many demonstrable lies, he raised important questions about his character and what’s left of his integrity. What matters next, however, is whether anyone notices.

It’s come as something of a relief to see so many media professionals go after Ryan for his dishonesty last night. The Huffington Post homepage this morning featured an all-caps headline that read, “Paul Tales: Ryan Misleads Again & Again.” The AP ran a decent fact-checking piece; the center-right Washington Post editorial board raised concerns about Ryan’s “misleading” rhetoric; and the center-left Boston Globe editorial board said Ryan’s lying “may hurt his own credibility.”

I’m well aware of the fact that the vast majority of Americans will never see any of this scrutiny, but other reporters, editors, and producers will, and if a consensus begins to emerge that Romney/Ryan is fundamentally dishonest, this is likely to influence the public’s perceptions of the race.

The Morning Plum: How Obama will respond to Paul Ryan’s speech
    By Greg Sargent

The core message of Paul Ryan’s convention speech is that he and Mitt Romney can be counted on to make the tough choices Obama wouldn’t. That message is tailored to public anxiety about the economy and the deficit, and while Ryan spent a fair amount of time attacking a version of Obama that may not exist in the minds of many swing voters, the speech seemed like a political winner for the GOP.

But it’s also worth noting that it has provided Obama and Democrats an opening for a potentially effective response at their own convention.

The crux of Ryan’s argument was that the GOP ticket will have the courage and responsibility to level with the American people about the difficult choices required to salvage the nation’s ecomomy and finances.

Obama and Dems will respond by trying to transform the debate into one about priorities, seizing on the priorities undergirding the Romney/Ryan plans to lampoon their idea of what constitutes tough and courageous choices.

I realize the Romney campaign is concerned about its profound unpopularity among Latino voters. I also realize the campaign can’t send Romney to do outreach to the community, since so many Latinos simply don’t find the Republican credible.

That said, the underlying challenges notwithstanding, dispatching Ann Romney to do outreach may not have been a smart move.

Ann Romney’s convention speech was directly aimed at wooing female voters, but at a lunch event Wednesday she changed her focus and pitched her husband to Hispanic voters, a voting bloc that is especially important in this battleground state, urging them to get past the “biases … from the Democratic machine.” [...]

“You’d better really look at your future and figure out who’s going to be the guy that’s going to make it better for you and your children, and there is only one answer,” Mrs. Romney said, giving a harsher pitch than we usually hear from the woman who wants to be the next first lady.

Ann Romney added, “I know what it’s like to be the daughter of immigrants.”

Yeah, because few have suffered in American like … the Welsh?

WOW! This is the second announcement this week related to reducing the nation’s oil consumption and/or finding alternative energy resources. PBO is determined that the US becomes less dependent on foreign oil.

Big Moves In Industrial Efficiency: White House Directive Could Stimulate $40 Billion In New Manufacturing Investments

Earlier today, Obama signed an Executive Order that sets a national goal of 40,000 MW of new combined heat and power (CHP) installations in the next 10 years, while directing various departments to initiate policies and technical assistance programs to help implement projects.[....] CHP — a process that uses excess heat from electricity generation for air-conditioning or water heating, or uses excess heat to generate electricity — is well proven in both manufacturing and at power plants (see also “Recycled Energy — A core climate solution“).

The industrial sector accounts for about 30 percent of all energy use in America.[....] The Obama Administration plan would increase America’s capacity of industrial efficiency by 50 percent over the next decade. According to the Department of Energy, that could save up to $10 billion per year in energy costs and reduce annual CO2 emissions by 150 million metric tons, or the equivalent of taking 25 million cars of the road.

Chicago Teachers Give Notice of Possible Deadline for Strike

As parents here prepare to send their children back to school next week, the union representing Chicago Public Schools teachers gave a 10-day notice on Wednesday of its intent to strike, the next legal step in a series of maneuvers amid continuing contract bargaining with the city.[....] With a contract expiring on June 30, the talks over a new one have been escalating for months. The union says its concerns include job security, wages, teacher evaluations and the impact of a newly imposed longer school day.

Beginning this year, the Chicago school system, which had one of the shortest school days in the country, extended its academic day to seven hours from 5 hours 45 minutes for elementary schools and to seven and a half hours from seven hours for high schools. The move added more instructional time for subjects like reading, art, math and science, according to district officials.[....]

Bisexual woman wins Arizona congressional primary

Openly bisexual candidate Kyrsten Sinema won a Democratic primary tonight and will advance to the November general election in Arizona’s 9th Congressional District. She will face the winner of tonight’s Republican primary, which is currently too close to call.

If elected, Sinema would be the first-ever openly bisexual member of Congress and the only out woman in the U.S. House. Before running for Congress, she served in the Arizona state legislature. Sinema was elected to the State Senate in 2010, and prior to that, she served in the State House from 2005 to 2010.[....]

    How Obama crashed Reddit

President Obama crashed the social news site Reddit on Wednesday when he took part in an “Ask Me Anything” town hall.
    And now we know why.

According to numbers from Reddit, the Obama event was the most trafficked in the site’s history, with more than 4 million visits to this point.

The event was also the top-trending topic on Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, topping the GOP convention for a time.

And Obama’s campaign says the event led 25,000 voters to register on their Web site, including one 98-year old.

Reddit is a social news site on which users determine what content is the most important. Celebrities often use it to connect with fans.

True, I thought it was so cool that he was on Reddit. Also, I loved that he said told people to go to GottaRegister(dot)com to register to vote. It was a smart move and the whole point of going on Reddit. That site is mostly white and male and they may not have registered until PBO told them to.

Plus, when PBO signed off with the meme they created about him on Reddit, called “Not Bad”, the whole site just squeed. Great move on PBO’s part.

The nation’s five biggest banks agreed to a $25 billion foreclosure fraud settlement back in February that required them to provide $17 billion of mortgage relief to troubled homeowners.
