Roland Martin finds a hint of Texas in Leesburg

By Kathy Orton, Published: November 27 | Updated: Friday, November 29, 8:30 AM

Roland Martin is a Texan at heart, and although his work has brought him to the nation’s capital, he misses his home state’s broad expanses.

Until recently, the 45-year-old host of “News One Now,” a national daily news radio show, and his wife, Jacquie Hood Martin, lived off Foxhall Road in the District. They loved their house, but Martin felt claustrophobic. Washington was far too cramped for the former CNN political analyst, too
      confining.

As their family expanded, they decided to look for a roomier house. That’s when they discovered a hint of Texas in the Northern Virginia suburbs. In June, the Martins bought an 8,400-square-foot dwelling on 41 / 2 acres in the Beacon Hill community of Leesburg.

      http://www.washingtonpost.com/realestate/roland-martin-finds-a-bit-of-texas-in-leesburg/2013/11/27/2dac9a36-5070-11e3-9fe0-fd2ca728e67c_story.html

          NoVA is expensive:

          From Wikipedia:

“As of 2007, Loudoun County has the highest median household income of any county in the United States ($107,207), beating neighboring Fairfax County, Virginia ($105,241).[7″

Let’s break down this article, shall we?

“The Martins first looked in Prince George’s County because Martin wanted to be near Woodmore country club, where he is a member.”

First, they looked into the black neighborhood & found it lacking.

As passionate as he is about golf, space was even more of a priority for him. He yearned for the openness of his home state.

They ain’t got no damn space in Maryland?

Martin is questioned often about why he chose to move from his Northwest Washington home to

Leesburg. Having grown up in Texas, driving long distances is second nature to him. In fact, he much prefers the commute he has now to the one he had living in the District.

Cuz when he commutes back home, he’s commuting back to the white people he wants to be around so badly.

          • rikyrah

            Town breaks it down.
Dollars to donuts, he’s not a member of any club in Loudoun County.

      • rikyrah

This probably would have cost half as much in Prince George’s County

The Dialogue Behind The Castro-Obama Handshake: ‘Mr. President, I’m Castro’
    ANDREA RODRIGUEZ – DECEMBER 19, 2013, 1:30 PM

HAVANA (AP) — Cuban President Raul Castro introduced himself to President Barack Obama in English at Nelson Mandela’s funeral, telling him, “Mr. President, I’m Castro,” as the two leaders shook hands.

That’s according to Castro’s brother, Fidel, who broke months of silence Thursday with a lengthy editorial in state media discussing Cuba’s ties to Mandela and his brother’s trip to South Africa for his funeral.

The Dec. 10 handshake set off speculation in the U.S. and Cuba about whether it signaled a warming of ties between the two nations after decades of animosity. U.S. and Cuban officials dismissed that, calling the handshake a mere courtesy.

In his 2,400-word essay published Friday on the front pages of Cuba’s government-run newspapers and websites, Fidel Castro congratulated his brother for his “steadfastness and dignity, when, with a friendly but firm gesture, he greeted the head of the U.S. government and told him in English, ‘Mr. President, I’m Castro.’”

    @ajamlive
Read: Pres. Obama’s statement on commuting the sentences for eight in crack cocaine cases pic.twitter.com/dC6bolPjSI
[eta: also pasted it in text format below]

Statement by the President on Clemency

Three years ago, I signed the bipartisan Fair Sentencing Act, which dramatically narrowed the disparity between penalties for crack and powder cocaine offenses. This law began to right a decades-old injustice, but for thousands of inmates, it came too late. If they had been sentenced under the current law, many of them would have already served their time and paid their debt to society. Instead, because of a disparity in the law that is now recognized as unjust, they remain in prison, separated from their families and their communities, at a cost of millions of taxpayer dollars each year.

Today, I am commuting the prison terms of eight men and women who were sentenced under an unfair system. Each of them has served more than 15 years in prison. In several cases, the sentencing judges expressed frustration that the law at the time did not allow them to issue punishments that more appropriately fit the crime.

Commuting the sentences of these eight Americans is an important step toward restoring fundamental ideals of justice and fairness. But it must not be the last. In the new year, lawmakers should act on the kinds of bipartisan sentencing reform measures already working their way through Congress. Together, we must ensure that our taxpayer dollars are spent wisely, and that our justice system keeps its basic promise of equal treatment for all.

The Obama Political Obituaries Are Way Premature

    By Michael Tomasky
    December 19th 20135:45 AM

It’s been a messy year, but let’s not him pair him with Nixon just yet. Obama isn’t even as bad off as Bush was after his Social Security debacle—and nothing rules out a rally in 2014.

If President Obama saw the columns and news stories I keep reading lately, he’d probably have half a mind to resign and scurry back to Chicago in time to see the Bears lose a playoff game. “Tanking” approval numbers, no accomplishments, rudderlessness, and of course the website fiasco; they all add up, the conventional wisdom seems to say, to a presidency that is already all but finished, unless John Podesta can somehow save it. The Washington Post reported this week that among second-term presidents in the polling era, only Richard Nixon had a lower approval rating at this point than Obama does now.

Nixon? Is it really that bad? (By the way, there’s still a considerable distance between the two—Obama sits at 43 percent in the Post poll, while Nixon was down at 29.) I can read numbers, and I know what’s happened over the past year. Obama has lost support among core Democratic groups such as women and Latinos, and one suspects that the failure—not his failure; the failure, a distinction not enough people are evidently making—to pass immigration reform was disillusioning for these cohorts. And obviously the HealthCare.gov fiasco is the governing reality here. It’s been a messy year.

Super-weak black leadership; so eager to co-sign and play housemaid to majority privileged groups hoping that some of the benefits our own legacy and the moral authority of our own civil rights movement might trickle down to us:

But in the absence of an organization like GLAAD, which is extremely familiar to both media companies and media reporters, condemning those remarks, most of the entertainment reportage focused on Robertson’s anti-gay comments. That’s less a matter of disregard for racial bias, I think, than a focus instead on covering conflicts or potential conflicts between large organizations. And there’s a particularly strong incentive to cover disputes that could evolve into disputes with economic consequences, like the advertiser boycott GLAAD was clearly threatening. The NAACP did co-author a letter to A&E with the Human Rights Campaign. But that letter didn’t mention advertisers, as GLAAD’s statement did, and I wonder if it might have been interpreted more as a sign of consensus among gay organizations, than as proof of a broad-based coalition that objected to a range of Robertson’s remarks. A&E certainly reinforced that impression by focusing on the LGBT community in its statement announcing the suspension, explaining that “His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community.”

    http://thinkprogress.org/alyssa/2013/12/19/3089521/duck-dynasty-controversy-perfect-media-scandal-2013/#

Coalition doesn’t equal co-opting and cannibalizing, to the point at which an enormously dangerous set of remarks about black acceptance of slavery and Jim Crow passes nearly unremarked, and black people have gotten so used to this sort of bs that many don’t even see anything wrong with this person “speaking his opinion.” The image that this man is promoting of black people who are lazy now but better off under slavery and Jim Crow has nothing to do with religious belief at all. Yet we lack strong voices standing up for us and only us. No other group is made to feel that their own progress is contingent on fighting for what everyone else wants. That’s the disservice which black leadership is doing to this generation IMO. Massive strategic blunder, and its effects will be felt beyond silly fights over known ignorant reality tv stars.

    • Alma98

Did the NAACP say anything to A&E about their tv show 48hrs. Remember when that poor baby was shot during the making of said show.

      • gn

omg, that’s terrible. I hadn’t heard about that.

        • Alma98

Don’t you remember gn the little girl that was shot and killed? At the time the idiots on DK was making all kinds of excuses for the cops.
          http://newsone.com/1569895/officer-charged-in-first-48-killing-of-7-year-old/

          • gn

I remember this poor baby (wasn’t she asleep with her grandmother?).

          • Alma98

            Yep

          • gn

And now it’s coming back—there was a great deal of sympathy for the cop and how he had to “live with” what he’d done. Less for the family of that child. If a kid can’t be safe sleeping in bed with her grandmother, where are our kids safe?

          • Alma98

I know everyone kept saying you don’t know what he’s going through. That pissed me off to no end. WTF! Do they think that family went through. They act as if it’s normal for our children to be killed and we just except it, no big deal.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

“That’s less a matter of disregard for racial bias…”?? BS! The Black community and our issues are STILL invisible to this society.

Here’s the letter from the NAACP and HRC to A&E: http://www.hrc.org/files/assets/resources/HRC_NAACP_Letter_121813.pdf

The letter focuses more on the racist comment by Phil Robertson, but it is strange that it doesn’t mention a boycott of the show and its advertisers. Still, the omittance of threatening a boycott isn’t the reason the media and A&E ignored Robertson’s racist comments. Ironically, racism is the reason.

      • gn

lol, I know, I shook my head at that sentence—the entire point of all of “the new black” designations is to imply that the struggle for civil rights is over, and thus other groups should inherit and benefit from that legacy. The entire point. It’s why the far right has been making these comparisons and looking to water down the reality of slavery and Jim Crow since forever. It’s been dismaying watching that effort get such an assist from the left and from many in the black leadership themselves. It was always a trap and it was always going to end up disadvantaging us.

  • Alma98

I get home and there’s a message on my machine from Ron Johnson’s sorry ass. Talking about join a town hall meeting and begging for money. This is what I get for playing with republican robo polls.

    • Aquagranny911

I feel you! Hubby & I plan to terminate with “extreme prejudice” our land line after the first of the year. We have had it with the robo calls & the “you old people, give us all your money because you are stupid & need to die” calls. It does not matter that we are on the “Do Not Call” list, they call anyway.

It does make me a bit nervous but the Fam knows how to reach us when they need us & if I scream out the window I’m sure one of the neighbors will come to help.

      • Alma98

I’m always screening my calls if it says unknown or it’s a number I don’t know I don’t answer. You’ll have to leave a message lol. And I hate those damn credit card people saying “you can get a lower interest rate”. I’m going to buy a new mini airhorn, I wore the old one out lol.

        • Aquagranny911

We do that too but my old answer machine is now totally full & it is a pain in the butt to clear 96 calls & hang ups. We have been totally bombarded by insurance companies trying to sell us new insurance supplements, long term care or my personal favorite… cemetary plots & cremation plans.

You can believe that corporations mine data or how else would they know we are old farts on Medicare. What they don’t know is that Tri-Care is our supplement so FU to them!

We have also gotten enough paper solicitation to re-forest half the US & heat our house when burned in the fireplace for the winter!

Can you tell I’m pissed? Rant over!

          • Alma98

Mine is digital, I got a call from folks trying to sell us cemetary plots. I told her it’s taken care of and hubby was a vet, she then tried to sell me a plot. I told her I’m being cremated and scattered to the winds lol.

          • Aquagranny911

Oh, don’t scatter. I told my Fam to plant my ashes with a fruit tree of their choice. That’s what we did for my older brother who died back in 2000 & the tree flourishes. It makes us smile all the time to see how well it grows. It is such a satisfying memorial.

Senators Defy Obama And Introduce A New Iran Sanctions Bill

Sens. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) on Thursday
introduced new legislation that proposes new conditional sanctions on
Iran, openly defying White House wishes to not introduce new sanctions while negotiations over Iran’s nuclear energy program are ongoing.

The bill, called the “Nuclear Weapon Free Iran Act,” has 26 co-sponsors — a good mix of Republicans and Democrats.

@LOLGOP In one week GOP pols went from coopting Mandela’s legacy to rallying around a dude who said black people were happier under Jim Crow

IMO the far right and racists want to erase black people off the face of the earth before admitting to black disadvantage and white privilege. Both of those actions (coopting Mandela + watering down Jim Crow with happy nigras imagery), while seeming inconsistent, are actually quite consistent when viewed from that end goal.

If he can’t be removed from office some Rep. should atleast start proceedings for censure. There needs to be some reprimand, because if there is not the U.S. becomes like pre revolutionary France where the elite were unaccountable.

    Never seen anything this evil:

    @umlautilde
MT @eBay Your sham art auction, through which people can financially reward George Zimmerman for killing Trayvon Martin, makes me sick.

  • gn

    I just cannot stand Cenk:

He’s upset that an art critic said on CNN that Zimmerman isn’t an artist (he’s not) and that the critic said that Zimmerman is attention-seeking and psychotic. Cenk finds the critic’s suggestion that Zimmerman is psychotic is laughable. I bet Trayvon’s parents don’t find that suggestion funny in the least. The bottom line is that people are paying for a f-ing lynching trophy and uber-emo Cenk Ugyar is upset that someone calls it psychotic. Can’t stand this guy for too many reasons to name.

Lawsuit alleges pervasive racism at Eureka City Schools: ACLU files federal suit, asks for probe of Loleta Union School District
    The Times-Standard

    excerpt:
The lawsuit includes scores of incendiary allegations, including that the black plaintiffs have had racial slurs directed at them from scores of classmates, with one saying students have called him “n–,” made monkey noises at him, spit on him, thrown food at him and physically assaulted him since grade school. Another student alleges she and her mother brought allegations of racial bullying to administrators on about 30 occasions but little if anything was done by school and district officials to curb the harassment.

The lawsuit also includes allegations of systemic racism, with anecdotes about inappropriate remarks from teachers, administrators and staff. One student alleges that one of her white teachers proclaimed in front of her class that “black people get bored easily”, and that a school monitor once told her, “Don’t give me your black attitude.”

The lawsuit also alleges Eureka City Schools’ curriculum is insensitive, pointing toward teachers’ practice of using films or books containing racial slurs without discussing “the offensiveness and the historical context of the terms.”

The Native American plaintiff alleges that the educational environment has also been hostile to Native Americans, their cultures and traditions. The student points to an instance at Eureka High School in the spring of 2013, when a history teacher asked students to raise their hands if they were Native Americans and then called upon a Yurok tribal member to explain to the class the Indian Island Massacre carried out on the Wiyot Tribe. Another teacher, according to the suit, asked students to make up different Native American tribes and then had them pretend to fight each other to “teach her students that this was how Native Americans traditionally resolved conflict between their communities.”

Oooh, I’m watching my favorite movie of all time…Dirty Dancing. So many great dance scenes. You can’t beat Otis Redding growling, I mean singing, Love Man as only he can. I also always LOL at the end of this scene, because at the end homegirl’s like “aww shhh, I’m ready to do some dancing” and Patrick Swayze just swings her out and keeps it moving…lol.

  • lamh36

    Evening peeps.

Long day at work today, now I gotta get psyched up for bowling league. To tell ya da truth, I’m already bored with it and if I didn’t still have to work with the lady who got me to join, I’d have quite long time ago. Now though, our 4th team member done got put in jail, so I feel even worse about not going…lol.

Shoot, another off-shoot good thing if I get the job in NOLA I applied for, I can bow out of the league gracefully rather than having to tough it out until May 2014….Ugh.

    LOL

I read that Swayze got aggravated with Grey for that after several retakes but they left it in & it was cute. His facial expression was for real.

Tea Party group blasts wrong Rep. King

The conservative Tea Party Express targeted Rep. King for blistering criticism Wednesday — it just hit the wrong one.

The conservative outside group blasted out an email Wednesday criticizing Rep. Pete King (R-N.Y.), who formed a leadership PAC this week aimed at thwarting conservative members like Sens. Ted Cruz (Texas) and Rand Paul (Ky.).

However, the group accidently named Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a staunch conservative and vocal opponent of comprehensive immigration reform. The group quickly corrected itself.

    - – - U.S. Stocks Stay High on Fed Taper Boost – -

    – - –U.S. stocks closed little changed Thursday as a mixed outlook in economic reports did little to shake investor confidence following the Federal Reserve’s decision
Wednesday to trim the size of its economic stimulus program, an
announcement that sent equity markets surging to record-highs.

Stocks enjoyed one of the biggest one-day performances of 2013 on Wednesday as outgoing Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke said recent improvements in the U.S. economic recovery warranted a tapering of the central bank’s stimulus program.

As for Thursday, the S&P 500 slipped a mild 0.06% to 1,809.6 while the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.07% to 16,179.02. The Nasdaq dipped 0.3% to 4,058.14.

The Fed said Wednesday it will start to scale back its monthly asset purchases in January to $75 billion, a $10 billion reduction. The central bank has been buying $85-billion in asset-backed securities each month since December 2012.

    - – -Antoine Fuqua on board to direct feature about Olympic gold medalist who defied Adolf Hitler
——Disney is developing a biopic about American track and field hero Jesse Owens, setting up the project with BermanBraun and Netter Films and attaching Antoine Fuqua to direct.

Producers are BermanBraun’s Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun and Netter Films’ Gil Netter (who has a first-look deal at Disney). Exec producers are BermanBraun’s Andrew Mittman and Netter Films’ Arthur Spector.

The untitled film is based on the book “Triumph,” written ESPN host Jeremy Schaap. David Seidler, who won a screenwriting Oscar for “The King’s Speech,” is on board to write the screenplay.

—-Midwest Engineer Finds Better Plan than Employer Offer
I’m an engineer for a moderate contracting house in the
midwest. My employer offers medical coverage for ~360 a month, which would cost me around $6,300 after premiums & deductible, and $10k after previous plus max out of pocket.

After a half hour of typing information into healthcare.gov, the most difficult part being the difficulties of typing information into a smartphone, I was given a choice of 27 plans. The plan I chose will save me $100 a month in premiums, and will lower my premiums & deducible and max out of pocket by $200 and $3,300 per year.

I can keep my existing doctor. My blood pressure medication is covered.

Thank you Obamacare for saving me $1200 in direct premiums, and for potentially saving me $3,300 if something catastrophic happens.
