Men Write Three-Quarters of Election Coverage, Survey Says

In the post-primary period of 2012 election coverage, most of the newspaper stories were written by men, according to a survey by The Women’s Media Center and compiled by The 4th Estate Project. National and state newspapers were surveyed, including those with the nation’s highest circulation rates, like The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, and USA Today. The research covers both the primary and general election periods.

From January 1 to April 15 (during the GOP primary period) 76 percent of articles written by men. From April 16 to August 25 (during the general election period) 72 percent of articles written by men.

Women’s Media Center co-founder Robin Morgan said about the survey results, “This is crucial, eye-opening information about how far we’ve yet to go to achieve a press corps that’s truly representative and reflective of its audience.”[….]

More focus should be directed by the “talking heads” at those who AREN’T doing their jobs [Congress], rather than creating distractions and criticizing PBO for choosing whomever he deems fit to fill positions in his administration. He’s already proven that he knows what he’s doing…can Congress say the same?

Lisa Jackson blasts D.C. on her way out, while Chamber of Commerce shrugs and lobbies

In an interview with USA Today (yesterday), outgoing EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson railed against obstructive Republican members of the House, and trumpeted the agency’s work on fighting climate change during her tenure.[….]
She said the EPA’s so-called “endangerment finding” that greenhouse gases pose a public threat, upheld despite court challenges, has enabled the agency to use the Clean Air Act to start reducing their emissions and “help businesses to look forward to a different future.”[….]

Another challenge, she said, is Congress. Jackson repeatedly tussled with congressional Republicans and the fossil-fuel industry over anti-pollution regulations. “One of the questions everyone is asking themselves is whether the U.S. House of Representatives is actually going to reflect the will of the people on a lot of these issues, and the will of the people is awfully clear.” But people in Washington continue to argue about them “and that’s not good for our country,” she said.[….]

This Is Our Future: Attracting Women and Minorities to the Wind Industry
    Posted on December 21, 2012

This past Wednesday, the Energy Department livestreamed a conversation between Energy Secretary Steven Chu and U.S. Senator Mark Udall (D-CO), two leaders and champions of renewable energy innovation. The topic at hand – the future of the U.S. wind industry – was driven by questions from a live audience and participants online using Twitter, Facebook, Google +, and email to ask Energy about wind technology, policy, and careers. The last question of this important discussion asked how we can ensure that women and minorities are involved in wind energy jobs.[….]

Senator Mark Udall spoke about the need to invest in community college, land grant, and state University STEM programs, which are training students to be part of the future and current clean energy economy.[….] Secretary Steven Chu shared his vision for instilling the belief in all Americans that there are opportunities to make a livelihood in the wind industry. “Women and minorities should not only be encouraged to do this, this is taking full advantage of the human capital we have in the country … which is our biggest asset,” Secretary Chu said. This is why we must continue investment in the education of the future, training the next generation of wind industry employees, small business entrepreneurs, and innovators.[….]

Jerry Brown predicts California budget surplus by end of next year

    January 10, 2013 | 10:27am

After years of red ink, Gov. Jerry Brown said on Thursday that California’s $96.7-billion general fund is now poised to end next year with a surplus, thanks to years of deep budget cuts and billions in new taxes approved by voters last year.

“We achieved the position we’re in because of tough cuts … and then the people voted for taxes,” he said. “We broke the logjam by going to the people.”

Schools will be the big winner in the governor’s new spending plan, receiving $56.2 billion in state funds, an increase by $2.7 billion over the last year. That funding is set to jump to more than $66 billion by 2016.

The budget also dedicated an additional $350 million to the state’s public insurance program, Medi-Cal, to help implement President Obama’s healthcare law.

Brown’s budget predicts only the second budget surplus in the last decade, with an $851-million surplus projected at the end of the 2013-14 fiscal year — if all his proposals are approved by lawmakers.

With Democrats firmly in control of both legislative houses and the governor’s office, and without what had become familiar multibillion-dollar deficits, this year’s announcement lacked the anxiety and urgency that had surrounded past budget unveilings.

I said so last year but its new so: Will Gov. Brown come up in 2016? Dem trifecta lifting the biggest state! Combo taxes and cuts. Just a thought.

Karl Rove accidentally unmasks the GOP’s debt ceiling ruse
Posted by Greg Sargent on January 10, 2013 at 11:47 am

I know you’re tired of hearing that the Republicans’ position on the debt ceiling is incoherent and that their claims of leverage are greatly exaggerated. But now we have none other than Karl Rove confirming all of this for us.

Rove’s latest column rips into Obama for supposedly mischaracterizing the GOP position on the debt limit. He quotes Obama saying: “We can’t not pay bills that we’ve already incurred.” And here’s how Rove responds to Obama:

There you have it. Rove acknowledges flat out that Boehner, McConnell, and other Republican leaders do recognize that they will have to raise the debt ceiling. They just, you know, want to raise it while reaching a broader deal to cut spending. The game here is absurdly transparent: You mustn’t claim Republicans are crazy enough to destroy the economy to get their way, because they don’t want to do that at all — but you still must play along with the idea that the need to raise the debt ceiling (which they acknowledge must happen) still somehow gives them leverage to get the cuts they want.

    Debt Ceiling Hostage Enablers
    By Jonathan Chait

The House Republicans’ averred position of making the occasion of a debt ceiling hike into a high-stakes negotiation is a new and dangerous turn in American politics. Fortunately for them, it is not being treated as such.

Consider recent columns by Ross Douthat, Ramesh Ponnuru, and Megan McArdle. All are right-of-center columnists but not reliable Republican water carriers. If the GOP were to receive signals that it is going beyond the pale and risking an extreme backlash among elites, these sort of writers would be the canary in the coal mine. Instead, they are sending the opposite message.

Douthat and McArdle do disavow debt ceiling hostage-taking. But, in pox-on-both-houses, assert that the prospective response of minting platinum coins is just as bad. (McArdle: “Silly loopholes are exploited for bargaining power, and the resulting stalemates are generally solved with a temporary patch that solves the immediate problem by creating a bigger one down the road.” Douthat: “One party behaves irresponsibly, the other side counters with a wave of irresponsibility of its own.”) And so, if Republicans do refuse to raise the debt ceiling, they can assume that the result will not be a wave of abhorrence directed at them but instead a diffuse disgust at Washington in general, perhaps accompanied by more calls for third parties, as happened the last time Republicans flirted with financial disaster in 2011.

Osama bin Laden got classified cables Bradley Manning passed to Wikileaks: prosecutors

Some of the classified cables allegedly leaked to Wikileaks by an Army GI ended up in the hands of Osama bin Laden, U.S. military prosecutors said.

The terror mastermind had an Al Qaeda lieutenant bring him some of the secret State Department and military reports allegedly leaked by Pfc. Bradley Manning, Army prosecutor Capt. Joe Morrow said during a pretrial hearing at Fort Meade, Md, on Wednesday.

..Prosecutors also said they would show logs of web chats between Manning and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

During one exchange, the two laughed about a Times article from 2010 that said the Pentagon considered Wikileaks a threat to national security, the Times reported.

Tyler Perry offers $100K reward in Fla. cold cases
    Associated Press

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Filmmaker Tyler Perry is offering a $100,000 reward for information in the decade-old case of two men who went missing after separate encounters with a sheriff’s deputy in southwestern Florida.

Perry joined the Rev. Al Sharpton and NAACP president and CEO Ben Jealous at a news conference Thursday in Naples to discuss the missing-person investigations of Terrance Williams and Felipe Santos.

Santos and Williams disappeared three months apart in the Naples area in 2003 after crossing paths with Collier County Sheriff’s Deputy Steven Calkins. He was never charged but was fired the next year.

Perry said the media was not paying enough attention to missing-person cases involving minorities. Williams was black and Santos was an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

Bro-Obama? Ana Marie Cox is always that fake bish so this was expected

Does Barack Obama have a women problem?
Let’s put ‘Bro-bama’ talk aside, but the president can and should do more to promote women to senior posts in his administration

…Questions about the sincerity of the Obama team’s commitment to gender equality have been hushed but constant since his primary battle with Clinton, when the very fact of her defeat was proof that a cracked glass ceiling was a ceiling nonetheless. The years following saw a reliable trickle of trend stories, each with one set of facts that could support the theory that the Obama was a feminist hero (there’s a 50:50 male/female staff ratio in the White House; absent Bush appointees, only 49% of the 366 “decision makers” are men; and Secretary Clinton herself); and another set of data points that suggested he was simply treading civil rights water (no improvement over the Clinton administration in overall administration hiring) and lots of talk of a “feel” and a “sense” and even a ” vibe” that Obama was really “Bro-bama”. In the words of Tracy Sefl, a (Hillary) Clinton campaign adviser:

“Obama has a certain jocular familiarity with the men that he doesn’t have with the women.”

Discussion over the Obama administration’s make-up is both forced and delicate: critics of how the administration has yet to achieve true gender parity are painfully aware that things could be much, much worse. But does that make the situation, as it stands, OK?

    • GN

To add to this, regardless of the article title, Zerlina Maxwell is halfway defending the admin against this spurious and trumped up media blitz, but IMO she doesn’t go hard enough against the beltway media and their excesses:

Are there too many white men in the White House?

Now the beltway narrative is that the nation’s first black president isn’t filling out senior staff and cabinet positions with people of color and women, a trend that is disappointing to the diverse coalition of interests and voters that elected Obama to office.

In a nutshell, that’s everything that’s wrong with the beltway and it’s why as an institution, they have favorability/credibility ratings hovering near that of a grossly unpopular Congress. They don’t report the facts; they report “narratives” many of which are devoid of truth. They are a self-reinforcing clique and a herd. I’m glad that they are getting smacked down for the “diversity” hit job and I’m disappointed that Maxwell wasn’t more forceful in doing so (you have to read the whole story to see what I mean, especially the last paragraph).

      • I read that bullshit earlier. I’m not disappointed in Zerlina because she has already, in past articles/tweets, that her main objective is to become a member of the beltway class. She’s a New Media Negro through and through.

        • rikyrah

she spends way too much advertising her appearances on FOX…which should tell you everything you need to know about her.

Anamarie Cox is a pure D self-serving bitch! That is all!

    • Camille

Says the woman who can’t even muster the decency to compliment – or even offer a single kind word, acknowledgement or defense of the much maligned and disrespected, brilliant and amazing black First Lady of the United States.

Not once! And yet we are to believe that this petty, silly, small, spiteful, deluded, self-important, self-aggrandizing, self-promoting bitch knows anything?! Bitch please!

      Fuck of Ms Cox.

      • Camille

Fuck off Ms. Cox. And permanently too!

      • rikyrah

        tell it

    • Please take note of the Clinton references, including a quote from a Hillary campaign advisor. Ana Marie Cox is still mad because she beat her “golden girl”, Hillary. #WhiteWomenProblems

      • AxelFoley

Sums it all up. PUMAs never got over PBO beating their candidate. And they never will.

But, I’d like to see them try to win 2016 without us, because that’s what they’re gonna have to do.

        • Incredible. It was 5 years ago. The woman went to work for him and they still can’t let it go.

The funny part for me is they never actually sit down and do any analysis of the fact that politcally the woman made some incredible blunders.

          a. No caucus strategy to speak of and relied solely on swing states and the fact America would never elect a Black Man. Not understanding that yes caucuses = delegates was a huge mistake.

          b. Clintonites were the majority on all these election committees and agreed to punish states like Michigan and Florida for moving up their primaries. They got outsmarted by Team Obama and cried foul after falling into their own trap.

          c. Picked Mark Penn to run her campaign.

          d. Didn’t grasp the power and money making capabilities of the internet until she was woefully in debt. By then it was too late.

Oh and e. Had no clue who she was up against. But that’s not her fault. It happens to a lot of people. Just ask McCain, Romney, The Koch Brothers, Bill Clinton, mainstream media, Mitch McConnell. You get the idea.

“Obama has a certain jocular familiarity with the men that he doesn’t have with the women.”

And if he were to show any more “jocular familiarity” with the women, Tracy Sefl and Ana Marie Cox would be the first ones out the door making up stuff and screaming scandal, disrespect, abuse, affair, wimp, bully, can’t deal with strong men, exploits women and on and on and on.
The criticisms and whining will never end and President Obama is much better off tuning them all out and stay doing what he’s doing.

  • Camille

There’s so much galling about all this fake outrage and manufactured controversy about the lack of diversity in President Obama’s “inner circle” of “trusted advisers”.

Not the least of which is that most of the same noisemakers including the women amongst them, were the the most vicious attackers of Susan Rice who in my opinion was exceedingly qualified and more than capable to be Sec. of State.

We all remember Dana Milbank’s well-timed hit job amongst others commissioned by the PUMA’s that accused Susan Rice of being everything under the sun especally “brash and undiplomatic”. Notice that her qualifications were never questioned, just her “attitude”.

Chris Matthews and Jonathan Alter even had the temerity to publicly declare that it was “time for a man again” in that position because there had been “three women in a row”. According to them Kerry their white guy brought “gravitas” to the position and as the lead Cabinet secretary, the white guys were not going to “look up to” that black woman.

But even more important in all of this latest incarnation of the insanity that has beset the little insecure white men in America and the media?

The fact that these are the very same assholes who in concert with some of their “friends of convenience” that work for President Obama, have for the past 4 years done everything in their power to destroy and topple Valerie Jarrett from her place as the President’s closest and most trusted adviser.

His and Michelle’s professional conscience and the trusted keeper and minder of their moral compass and north star and why they committed to this entirely very difficult and heavy toll taking mission in the first place.

Valerie Jarrett has been unendingly viciously attacked, maligned, slandered and her life threatened because the white men within and outside the White House simply can’t stand that she not only has the President and Mrs Obama’s implicit trust and ear, but is unyieldingly protective and loyal and will give her life for them.

Valerie Jarrett is that rare gift God gives a deserving President and First Lady especially ones who have been subjected to the most hostile and malicious attacks and sabotage from not just the ignorant racists, but from the media, the republican opposition and sadly from Democrats and the various strains of “liberal” leaning voices and leadership.

Every time I look and see Valerie Jarrett, I feel so much better. I know that she always looks out not just for the President, but Mrs Obama.

For Valerie Jarrett, it has ALWAYS been about the Obamas – both of them: their professional successes, but even more importantly, the health and protection of their very beings and their relationship as a couple – and their marriage. She has NEVER made it about herself – a rarity in the mad, mad, pea-cocking world of politics and power.

Cannot say the same for others. For no matter how reasonable, committed and well-intentioned they might seem at first, most if not all, just want that access and closeness to the President and his ear so that they can exploit and leverage that for their own purposes.

Which is why most of them will leak things to the media to try to get their way with and strong arm the President – and many of them are gathering materials for their many tell all books when this is all over.

The measure of who should be ones most trusted and closest adviser is entirely epitomized by the brilliant, dignified and amazing Valerie Jarrett.

She has such integrity and loyalty, does no self-promotion, takes no credit for accomplishments, honors, prioritizes and fiercely guards the President AND First Lady, and does not and will never leak stuff.

And one thing’s for sure, Valerie Jarrett unlike so many who now or once surrounded the President and Mrs Obama, will NEVER write or collaborate on a tell-all book or leverage information and years of access to the President and First Lady for personal gain, elevation, money or relevance. She will NEVER hurt or compromise the integrity and being of the President and First Lady. Never.

President Obama would be a fool to ever let Valerie Jarrett out of his professional sight. She is and remains the singularly most selflessly devoted person he has on his staff. And that is guaranteed never to change.

    • rikyrah

I always read and love what you write. I just have to say this – THANK YOU for writing it earlier in the day. I think a lot of folks miss your wisdom because you usually leave your wonderful words late at night.

I , too, am reassured that Ms. Jarrett is there for the First Couple.

I always am thankful that the President and First Lady have decided to just keep their circle of friends that they already have. Because there aren’t a dozen people in Washington worth letting into their inner circle.

People are mad because they haven’t been given access so that they can become leaking sieves for this administration and it drives them crazy.

      Bravo Camille and thanks.

      • Camille

Thank you so much Rikyrah, but I could say the same about you and all the wonderfully smart and insightful members of our family here.

We enrich, uplift, reassure and support each other and our magnificent President and First Lady as we share, inform and strategize to defeat and bypass a very hostile and viciously deceptive media who o our democracy and union a great disservice.

May God continue to give us all the grace and strength and intellect to continue.

May God continue to bless, protect, guide, guard, instruct and defend our glorious First Couple.

[Valerie Jarrett] has NEVER made it about herself – a rarity in the mad, mad, pea-cocking world of politics and power.

which is my guess for at least one of the reasons why Ms. Desiree was not invited to Valerie Jarrett daughter’s wedding.

*** getting ready to fix a cup of Constant Comment ***

      • Elie

Desiree Rogers was always in it for herself. Not a very savvy woman if you ask me especially seeing that if she’d just discreetly and quietly gone about her job she would be one of the most powerful, behind the scenes members of the Administration and had plenty of that clout, wealth and adulation she obsessively seeks. She would have been sought after for years for having been that guardian of the White House social register. But she had this consuming need to remind everyone who cared to listen how much higher she was on the Chicago society list than the Obamas and just how beneath her it was working for them. Let’s just say that I was one of many who were glad when she left and was doubly glad when she felt the need to give her exit interview to the evil right-wing gossip Lynn Sweet.
I strongly suspect that she is behind some of the leaks and the source of so many of the negative stories about Ms Jarrett and First lady Obama.

President Barack Obama on Thursday signed into a law a measure giving him, George W. Bush and future former presidents and their spouses lifetime Secret Service protection, the White House announced.

    – -The legislation, crafted by Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, rolls back a mid-1990s law that imposed a 10-year limit on Secret Service protection for former presidents. Bush would have been the first former commander in chief affected.

LOL at the whole to do about Bill Clinton getting the “Father of the year award”.

Never heard of this award and the national society or council that gives it, but the whole thing just smacks and is so contrived and lame and almost embarrassingly desperate if you ask me. Who lobbied who, I wonder?

Yet another venue to launch Hillary for 2016.

Meanwhile, it occurs to me that somebody married Chris Matthews. And it makes you wonder what sort of woman marries this sort of embarrassingly shameless, shallow, fickle, flaky, perpetually kissassing, muti-prong tongued guy?

But then again it occurs to you that some women also married Chuck Todd, Ed Henry, Jake Tapper, Dana Milbank etc.

    • conlakappa

Matthews’s wife always seemed like a reasonable person (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kathleen_Matthews). She was a D.C. anchor for years and had a calm demeanor about her. She was nod-hello neighbors with a friend of mine back in high school and I think before she met him/he moved into her condo. She’s now the Marriott P.R. person, which made my eyebrow arch upward almost as much as when I learned she was married to him. He also didn’t seem like such a bombast but that was a long time ago.

    — – – – Last night, President Obama presented Congress with a plan for economic action. For many unemployed Americans, the American Jobs Act could be the difference between finding a job, and remaining unemployed. For those who are employed, it would put more money in their pocket. For small business owners, it would remove barriers to growth, cut taxes, incentivize investment and create new demand.
    – – SNIP —
Those in Congress who haven’t yet decided to support the President’s plan should consider how much it will help America’s women and girls.
