Bush attorney general disappoints Hannity: Obama’s executive orders are legal

Former Bush Attorney General Michael Mukasey appeared on the Fox News Channel’s “Hannity” Wednesday night with a message that left the host looking rather disappointed. Rebutting the Republican talk show host, Mukasey said that President Barack Obama’s executive orders so far have been legal, as much as he finds them distasteful. He even expressed agreement with the Supreme Court’s finding that the Affordable Care Act is constitutional, leaving Hannity looking perplexed.[….]

Speaking about the president’s most significant executive actions thus far, Hannity exclaimed: “It seems me to be, by definition, abuse of power. A power grab if you will… Is it then unconstitutional in some instances?”[….]

Telemundo Anchor to GOP: There Are “Aryan, Blond, Blue-Eyed People” Who Need Immigration Reform, Too

While Marco Rubio has come out as a leader of the Republican Party on the issue of immigration reform, José Díaz Balart, the television anchor for Telemundo, isn’t all that impressed with the rest of the party.[….] “Let’s remember that the 11 million people that are here illegally aren’t just Latinos,” he said. “There are some aryan, blond, blue-eyed people” that also need legal status.

In fact, according to a Pew Institute report, nearly 20 percent of undocumented immigrants in the U.S. are not originally from Latin America. About 1 million come from Asia, 600,000 are from Europe and Canada, and 400,000 are from Africa and other countries.[….]

    Countdown to Affordable Health Insurance

January is the perfect month for looking forward to new and great things around the corner. I’m feeling that way about the new Health Insurance Marketplace. Anticipation is building, and this month we start an important countdown, first to October 1, 2013, when open enrollment begins, and continuing on to January 1, 2014, the start of new health insurance coverage for millions of Americans. In October, many of you’ll be able to shop for health insurance that meets your needs at the new Marketplace at HealthCare.gov.[….]

[….] That is why we are so excited about launching the newly rebuilt HealthCare.gov website, where you’ll be able to buy insurance from qualified private health plans and check if you are eligible for financial assistance — all in one place, with a single application. Many individuals and families will be eligible for a new kind of tax credit to help lower their premium costs. If your state is running its own Marketplace, HealthCare.gov will make sure you get to the right place.[….]

Republican Myth Busted: Reagan Raised the Debt Ceiling 3 Times More than Obama

President Reagan raised the debt ceiling the more times than any other President since 1960. He raised it 18 times, for a 67% increase.[….] President Obama “doesn’t even compare” to Reagan’s record, he has raised the debt ceiling 6 times, for a 31% increase. According to Bloomberg’s numbers, Republicans have raised the debt ceiling 49 times since 1960, while Democrats have only raised it 30 times. The debt ceiling has been raised 79 times since 1960.[….]

Ahmad Rashad and His Rich Wife Sale Johnson Headed for Splitsville

*It’s being reported that former NFLer and now sportscaster, Ahmad Rashad and his wife Sale Johnson, a society matron down in Palm Beach (Fla.), are said to be quietly negotiating a divorce settlement before they go public and file later this year.

If you didn’t know, Rashad and Johnson, a former fashion model and heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune, have been married since 2005.

Jose Lambiet’s Gossip Extra is reporting that Rashad & Johnson, who share a $5 million home in the luxurious Bears Club in Jupiter (see video below), have been living apart for several months and want to work out some financial differences quietly before filing, according to several sources.

Sale is believed to have received more than $100 million in her split from Johnson in 2002 and is way richer than the 63-year-old Rashad, a former Minnesota Vikings wide receiver and former host of The NBA on NBC. Celebritynetworth.com places Rashad, who now works for NBA TV, in the $8 million-range.

Reports out of New York City, planted by Sale Johnson’s camp, we’re told, claim that Johnson has grown weary of Rashad’s friendship with soon-to-be Bears Club neighbor and NBA great Michael Jordan and golfer Tiger Woods, who lives in nearby Jupiter Island.

A new hostage, every three months
    By Steve Benen
    Thu Jan 17, 2013 2:06 PM EST.

Stanford University’s Keith Hennessey, the director of the Bush/Cheney National Economic Council, concedes in a Wall Street Journal op-ed today that Republicans cannot follow through on their debt-ceiling threats. The political, economic, and electoral consequences would be too severe, he argues.

But Hennessey does not suggest the GOP simply meet its obligations without some strings attached. His plan suggests a series of short-term increases to the debt ceiling, instead of one long-term increase

[Obama’s] obvious goal is to punt the issue past the 2014 midterm election. Yet if he has to ask Congress for a new increase every few months, the spending problem his administration has exacerbated in his first term will dominate the policy agenda — when he wants to work on other issues.

That brings us to step two, which is for congressional Republicans to offer Mr. Obama a choice. He can have a long-term debt-limit increase if he agrees to cut spending, or he can have repeated, short-term increases without spending cuts. If the president continues to dodge the country’s long-term spending problem, the solution is to force him to ask Congress every few months to give him the authority to borrow more while facing questions about why he refuses to restrain spending

Let’s put aside for now the fact that Obama doesn’t “refuse” to cut spending; Obama’s already cut spending and approved $2.5 trillion in debt reduction. Let’s also put aside for now the irony of these complaints from an economist from the Bush/Cheney administration, which made literally no effort to be fiscally sane.

Pardon my language but that is fucking retarded. Congress still has to pay for the bills they pass.

Good riddance to the ‘Hastert Rule’?
    By Steve Benen
    Thu Jan 17, 2013 12:47 PM EST.

The so-called “Hastert Rule” is terrific for party discipline and partisan rule, but it’s awful for democracy and governing. And as of this week, its demise may be near.

As we talked about yesterday, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) brought a post-Sandy disaster relief bill to the floor this week, and passed it, despite the strong opposition of his own caucus. Though the aid package passed the chamber with relative ease, nearly 80% of the House GOP — 179 members — voted against it. This came just two weeks after Boehner also passed a bipartisan fiscal deal over the objections of most of his fellow House Republicans.

Under the non-binding “Hastert Rule,” this isn’t supposed to happen — Boehner is only supposed to bring bills to the floor that most of his own caucus supports (measures that enjoy a “majority of the majority”). The idea is, Republicans shouldn’t even consider bills if they’re dependent on Democratic votes to pass; the real power belongs in the hands of the House GOP’s far-right rank and file. And yet, the Speaker has now ignored the rule twice in two weeks.

Though Boehner aides insist these were isolated incidents, not a new normal, it’s generating a very interesting conversation on the right about whether the “Hastert Rule” has outlived its usefulness.

Obama’s Gun Control Plan Could Worsen School-to-Prison Pipeline
by Julianne Hing, Wednesday, January 16 2013, 3:14 PM EST

Tucked into President Obama’s gun control proposal is a benign and seemingly uncontroversial call to improve school safety by staffing up schools with more police officers and counselors. It’s one of the big umbrella areas of his plan, announced today. But that initial policy proposal has civil rights advocates worried that instead of making for “more nurturing school climates,” as Obama says he wants to work toward, he’ll be exacerbating the school-to-prison pipeline, another issue which Obama has worked proactively to address.

Obama is calling on Congress to fund schools to hire up to 1,000 more counselors, psychologists, social workers, and school resource officers, among other initiatives. While the name “school resource officers” is a rather benign term, they are actually typically sheriff’s deputies dispatched to patrol schools. As experience shows, more law enforcement officers do not necessarily make for safer school environments, and in fact can contribute to dynamics which push students out of school. As law enforcement officers who are called on to serve a disciplinary function in schools, they are a central part of the school-to-prison pipeline machine, an apparatus so-named for the ratcheting up of school discipline in the nation which has funneled youth, a disproportionate number of them black and Latino, out of schools and into the criminal justice system.

“We have several concerns about the administration incentivizing police departments and school districts to put more police officers in schools,” said Laura W. Murphy, director of the ACLU’s Washington legislative office.

  • Gun violence is a critical issue for black America
    January 17, 2013 By ctucker

For the Rev. Al Sharpton, well-known civil rights activist and television personality, the moment of personal reckoning about the apocalyptic toll of gun violence came in August of last year, as he walked into a Harlem church to deliver the eulogy for a dead four-year-old. Before that, like so many other black activists and ordinary voters, he had become inured to the fratricidal violence that tears apart families and wrecks whole neighborhoods.

“I walked in and saw this miniature casket, and it shook me. And I thought, ‘How come we’re not doing more about this?’, “ Sharpton told me.

That’s the salient question, isn’t it? And it’s especially pertinent for the legions of black preachers, activists and politicians who claim their priority is improving the lives of black Americans. If there is a “black agenda,” shouldn’t reducing black-on-black gun violence lead the list? Shouldn’t this be the leading crusade for the NAACP, the Urban League, the SCLC?

    – – –Meet The NRA-Backed Senate Democrats Who Oppose Obama’s Gun Violence Prevention Plan– —

—-On Wednesday, President Obama unveiled a comprehensive plan to reform American gun laws and take action against the 32,000 firearm-inflicted deaths per year in the United States. His proposals ranged from stricter, universal background checks to more funding for police officers to expanding access to mental health care.

Yet a group of Senate Democrats, all of them highly rated by the National Rifle Association, are refusing to say if they support the President’s reform package. Below is a list of the Senators in question, how they’re rated by the NRA, and what they’ve said about gun law reform:

    – – – — 1. Max Baucus, Montana (NRA Rating: A+).
    – -☻2. Heidi Heitkamp, North Dakota (NRA Rating: A).

    – – – -SNIP- —
    – — –Annnd – –THOSE WHO- — di-ent FALL 4 da –OKEY DOKE!!– —

    – —-Fortunately, however, several Democratic Senators with high ratings have realized the gun lobby’s power is vastly overstated. Mark Warner of Virginia, who has a flat A rating, said several of the Obama proposals had “bipartisan support” and that “President Obama has laid out a comprehensive, far-reaching proposal to address the issues of gun violence and public safety.
    – —–Guess soma dem di-ent hear THIS- — Ask them if they support renewing a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.
    – – -☻ And if they say no, ask them why not? Ask them what’s more important? Doing whatever it takes to get a – an A grade from the gun lobby that funds their campaigns? Or, giving parents some piece of mind when they drop their child off to first grade?

USDA offers up new seed money for small farmers

Make your hydroponic backyard organic kale dreams come true, now with help from the federal government. Yesterday the U.S. Department of Agriculture finalized a microloan program to assist veterans, minority growers, and small-time farmers who might otherwise have to rely on credit cards to get their farms up and running.

The microloans, up to $35,000 each, will be majorly helpful in an industry where loans are usually for much bigger sums, and involve much bigger stacks of paperwork. More microloans could mean more microfarms, and more diverse ones on the whole, and super-low interest rates (currently 1.25 percent) could certainly cut down on farmers’ debt load.[….]

Republicans Call Him a Dictator, But Obama Has Issued Fewest Executive Orders in 100 Years

[….] A funny thing happened on the way to Obama is dictator who is taking away all of guns Republican Memeville. New York Magazine crunched the numbers of presidential executive orders and concluded that this president has issued the fewest executive orders of any president over the last 100 years. Every Republican president signed more executive orders than Barack Obama has. On an order per day basis, Obama has issued fewer EOs than every single Republican president over the past century.

This fact will not stop Republicans from claiming that President Obama is stealing their rights, but it does demonstrate how far apart perception and reality are for the right. With their comments today, Republicans demonstrated that they are more interested in name calling and scoring political points with their base than seriously discussing the root causes of gun violence.

The media in this country is all the same…they didn’t check on this just like they willfully didn’t do their duty in checking on Romney’s finances.

Manti Te’o girlfriend hoax forces US sports journalists into self-reflection
Publications that blithely reported details of Notre Dame player’s ‘relationship’ now ask: ‘why weren’t any of us checking this?’

Manti Te’o’s story of losing his grandmother and girlfriend within a few hours of each other has now been pretty much established as a hoax. But whether the Notre Dame football star was victim or perpetrator, the US media was complicit.

The list of national media outlets that didn’t report, even in passing, that Teo’s girlfriend died of leukemia hours after the death of his grandmother, is much smaller than the list of those that did.

Since the sports website Deadspin released its extraordinary revelations on Wednesday night, news organizations have been scrambling to deal with the questions over their own reporting.

US Media is FUBAR at this point, it ain’t coming back. I got my journalism degree 25 years ago and the way the media conducts itself today is everything I was taught not to do. Actually I started seeing the writing on the wall in the mid-’90s and said screw it, I’m jumping over to PR because if I gotta BS people I might as well get paid well for doing it.

    • Admiral_Komack

“Manti Te’o girlfriend hoax forces US sports journalists into self-reflection.”

-…that will last all of two seconds…

“Publications that blithely reported details of Notre Dame player’s ‘relationship’ now ask: ‘why weren’t any of us checking this?'”

-Yeah, it’s not like we were distrac…Lance Armstrong cheated…HOLD UP AND GET ME REWRITE, DAMNNIT!

There is one aspect that struck me in the Guardian article: “Manti Te’o is supposedly a “devout Mormon.” This got me thinking, and wondering, about all the lies and exaggerations told by another “devout Mormon,” Bishop Mitt Romney.

Texas Attorney General Invites New York Gun Owners To Move To Texas

On Tuesday, New York became the first state to pass gun legislation in response to the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December. The measures include bans on assault weapons and magazines that hold more than 7 bullets, and a requirement that gun owners in homes with mentally ill people must properly lock up their firearms.

Though these new laws are immensely popular among New York voters, Texas attorney general Greg Abbott (R) has extended an open invitation to any New Yorkers who feel threatened by the new gun violence protection measure. Abbott launched an Internet ad campaign targeting New Yorkers shortly after Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) signed the law.

The Incredibly Cheap Attack on the Republicans’ “Minority Outreach” Panel
By David Weigel | Posted Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, at 2:40 PM ET

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — Cord Jefferson screencaps Luke Russert’s tweet about the upcoming “communication with minorities and women” panel, which’ll take place in the Burwell Plantation room. Ho, ho! The big speech from Domino’s Pizza’s CEO was in the same room, as was the discussion of polling, but Republicans should know better!

[W]hat better place to talk about making inroads with oppressed groups than in a room named after a famous Williamsburg plantation, located in the tony Kingsmill Resort, which itself is on the site of another plantation? The GOP has heard your complaints, blacks and Latinos and women, and they’re going to try to suss it out while sitting atop dead slave bones.

Yeah! Only… Democrats also “sat atop dead slave bones” (better than live slave bones) in January 2009, when they held their retreat here, and President Obama prepped at Kingsmill before his second debate with Mitt Romney. As Ways In Which Virginia Remains Somewhat Offensive go, the existence of Kingsmill probably ranks below the Jefferson Davis Highway and the old “Lee-Jackson-King” Day, which was celebrated in lieu of MLK Day until the year 2000. As accidental tributes to slave-owners go, it’s less noticable than the annual Jefferson-Jackson fundraising dinners held by every state Democratic Party, or the fact that Barack Obama has to govern in a city called “Washington.”

What Weigel’s white privilege is preventing him from seeing is the IRONY of a group of WHITE MALE Republicans conducting a seminar on improving their outreach to people of color in a room named after an enslaver, located on an old plantation. Furthermore, neither the Dems nor PBO were conducting seminars on minority outreach. False equivalency FAIL.

    He then tweets:

    daveweigel ‏@daveweigel
@trowaman Because I don’t think “disrespect” is as much as a problem as, say, trying to minimize black votes, which I wrote about today.

Since when does Weigel, a non-minority, get to decide was is or isn’t a problem for Black people? He wrote about the attempt to minimize Black votes? *slow golf clap* Yet he couldn’t connect the dots with GOP voter suppression and them holding a retreat/seminar on an old plantation?

    Dig deeper, Dave.

    • MsKitty

Wait, wasn’t he the one who had an anxiety attack from seeing so many Black people when he came to Charlotte for the DNC? He’s not very bright.

SMHAre the Congressional Chaplains Attending an Anti-Obama Prayer Breakfast?Just before President Barack Obama’s swearing in on Monday, a group of religious conservatives plans to hold a prayer breakfast featuring a number of anti-Obama conspiracy theorists. The Presidential Inaugural Prayer Breakfast—billed as offering “prayer, worship, and reconciliation of the nation”—will feature the editor of the birther site WorldNetDaily and minister and media mogul Pat Robertson, according its website. The organizers of the prayer breakfast also claim the House and Senate chaplains will speak at their event—appearances that may conflict with the non-partisan nature of the chaplain job.

House Chaplain Rev. Patrick Conroy and Senate Chaplain Barry Black (who has been in the news recently for his prayers during the fiscal cliff negotiations asking God to “save us from self-inflicted wounds”) are listed under the “Prayer for the Nation” portion of Monday’s event, just ahead of Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) and Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.). But featured speaker Joseph Farah, the WorldNetDaily editor, has drawn the most attention, given his website’s regular assertions that President Obama was actually born in Kenya and allegations that he is “the first Muslim president.” The event also features “messianic rabbi-pastor and author” Jonathan Cahn, who believes that there are signs of the apocalypse encrypted in Obama’s communications.more here: http://www.motherjones.com/mojo/2013/01/are-congressional-chaplains-attending-anti-obama-prayer-breakfast?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+Motherjones%2Fmojoblog+%28MotherJones.com+|+MoJoBlog%29

Dem bill would require independent commissions to redraw congressional districts
By Pete Kasperowicz – 01/16/13 05:01 PM ET

Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) and six other House Democrats have put forward legislation that would prevent state-level politicians from redrawing congressional districts. Instead, they would have be redrawn after each nationwide Census by an independent commission.

Cohen said his bill would help prevent the partisan redistricting of states, which many Democrats and Republicans have said creates districts that favor one party or another and allows hyper-partisan candidates to get elected.

“It’s time to take politics out of the redistricting process,” Cohen said. “Congress is so polarized today that we’re unable to find common ground on the major issues facing our country.

Absolutely! We have an independent redistricting commission here in AZ by state law. Our Gov tried to “impeach” the chairman & impede the process. Courts told her to “Take a seat on a cactus!” It’s a good thing or we would not have been able to elect five Dem Reps this time.

——Uninterrupted Scholars Act Signed Into Law!

Thanks to the concerted effort of youth, advocates, and service providers across the nation, the Uninterrupted Scholars Act (USA) was signed into law by President Obama last night! USA makes a common sense, no-cost legislative fix that will have a positive impact on hundreds of thousands of foster children across the country. In addition, it is a great example of bipartisan, bicameral cooperation spearheaded by the Foster Youth Caucus in both the House and the Senate.

Throughout 2012, the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth has traveled the country and visited five states on a nationwide listening tour. We heard from youth, families, and community leaders about the best practices and challenges facing the child welfare system. In Miami, Florida we learned about a common sense, no cost legislative fix that would have a significant and positive impact on hundreds of thousands of foster children across the country.

In May, after returning to Washington, the Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth – Representatives Karen Bass, Tom Marino, Jim McDermott, Michele Bachmann, and a number of other Members of the Caucus introduced the Uninterrupted Scholars Act. The Senate Foster Youth Caucus introduced the bill in August 2012.

This new law will help to close the academic achievement gap between children in foster care and their peers by providing youth with the support they need to avoid problems like inappropriate course placement and lost credits upon changing schools. Specifically, it will simply allow caseworkers to access transcripts and report cards for foster youth while maintaining important privacy protections.– –

  • Rosa Parks Statue to Be Added to the Capitol

Rosa Parks, the civil rights leader, will become the first African-American woman to have her likeness depicted in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall when a statue of her is installed later this year, Senator Charles E. Schumer, Democrat of New York, said in an interview Thursday.

Statuary Hall is ordinarily reserved for full-size statues from the states; each state sends two statues of its choosing to be put on display. The likeness of Ms. Parks was authorized by a special act of Congress in 2005; it represents the first commission by Congress for a full-size statue since the 1870s, according to the National Endowment for the Arts, which oversaw the design competition for the statue.

Florida Chamber targets local sick-time laws

The Florida Chamber of Commerce said Wednesday that one of its top legislative priorities this year would be blocking local governments from adopting paid sick-time measures such as the one pending in Orange County.

At a news conference in Tallahassee, Chamber President Mark Wilson said his powerful business group wants a law that would ban cities and counties from creating varying paid-sick-leave rules across the state.

The passage of local sick-time laws would, Wilson said, “make pockets of Florida very uncompetitive.”

    – – –Tickets sold out in record time this year for the official inaugural balls that President Barack Obama and wife Michelle will attend, but there are still plenty of places where young African-Americans can have the black Inaugural experience.

Ranging from the Hip Hop Ball II co-hosted by Russell Simmons’ Hip Hop Summit Action Network to the African-American Church’s Inaugural ball with master of ceremonies Roland S. Martin, the entire D.C./Maryland/Virginia area will have a plethora of events filled with parties, balls, forums and more for you to partake in during Obama’s second Inauguration weekend.

IMPACT is one group whose leaders will host four events during the weekend. Organizers say it’s set to be historic. “During Inauguration 2013, IMPACT is hosting a suite of events to ensure that young professionals stay politically involved, engaged, and economically empowered,” the organization said in a statement.

Young and Powerful, a national group for young professionals that helped raise money for Obama’s campaigns, will host six events in Washington, D.C. over the weekend and three in Chicago. Vanessa Abron, 31, the organization’s marketing coordinator, says the weekend will offer a combination of informational, fun and empowering events to participants. “The Young and Powerful group will include a variety of fun, inspiring yet educational events that will fit the need of everyone attending the inauguration,” Abron told theGrio.

The RSLC’s admission came in a shockingly candid report entitled, “How a Strategy of Targeting State Legislative Races in 2010 Led to a Republican U.S. House Majority in 2013″. It details how the group spent $30 million in the 2010 election cycle to sweep up low-cost state legislature races in blue states like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Their efforts were so successful, in fact, that Republicans went from controlling both legislative chambers in 14 states before Election Day to 25 states afterward.more here: http://thinkprogress.org/justice/2013/01/17/1459991/rslc-gerrymandering-house/

Town, just to keep it light, have you been watching La Patrona? It’s the first -time I’m watching a telenovela from the beginning during the first run and I am taking it too serious. I’m low-key mad at Irene sleeping with Alejandro Beltran pretending she just wanted a h&q when she wants to marry the guy. I think women just do themselves a disservice by thinking they are going to h&q their way into a marriage proposal.

    2) I’m glad the novelas are finally letting mestizo/dark looking men be the galan. I guess the complaints of some Latinos about that are reaching the heads at Telemundo. Jorge Luis pila isn’t typical galan handsome, he looks better on his left side, but he has the prettiest dark cubano skin sticks out. He is always the darkest one in the scene, but that’s the cuban in him coming out, but he’s good and has great chemistry w/ Arecely Arambula

    • Town

No, I don’t have Telemundo so I haven’t seen La Patrona. I don’t know anyone in the cast either except Aracely Arambula. Her eyebrows give me life. Last I saw her was in Corazon Salvaje 2009.

I’m only watching Amor Bravio on Univision. The galan is Cristian de la Fuente. He’s hot but I think he’s spray tanning to be dark because he played Aracely Arambula’s husband in Corazon Salvaje ’09 and I don’t think he was that dark on that show.

Cristian Bach is the mother of Sebastian Zurita, who was also in Corazon Salvaje ’09. He played the boyfriend of Angelique Boyer’s character. They were together in real life but broke up. He was supposed to play her boyfriend in Abismo de Pasion (his mother was in the original) but he got replaced, some say, at Angelique’s request b/c she was dating the much much much older producer of the show and I guess had juice like that (also she had come off a VERY successful run as “Teresa.”)

I wish they’d let some darker skinned women be protagonistas instead of sidekicks or maids, instead of all these blond, blue eyed white girls. LOL

      • JojoRaze

I knew about Aracely and LuiMi from way back. Never liked LuiMi, seemed like one of those really conceited me that use you and then drop you on a dime. Just found out she got remarried in the summer. I’m glad for her.

You have to watch La Patrona. Go to the Telemundo website, I’ve been watching it there the next day when they put up the previous night’s ep on at 11 AM EST. They have each episode divided up in five parts, 14 minutes, tops, there and it’s only 7 so far. They also have the full eps on the Telemundo Novela page on YouTube.

I wish they’d let some darker skinned women be protagonistas instead of sidekicks or maids, instead of all these blond, blue eyed white girls. LOL

Agree, that’s gonna be the brave new world of telanovelas when they have a Celia Cruz dark girl or a mestiza looking Mexican girl as the protagonista. I loved Maria Isabel, but I was low-key mad that Adela Noriega was auburn-haired and playing an indigena. I was like, Really, y’all. They did the same thing with Thalia having her play an indigena. Ain’t no pretty indigenas in Mexico??!!! Oh, really!

        • Town

I’ve only seen Adela Noriega in one TN, and that was Fuego en la Sangre, and all she did was cry. I hope I never see her in a production ever again.

I think the only brown skinned protagonista I’ve seen in a TN is Galilea Montijo in La Verdad Oculta. And she did that one novela and that was it.

I thought it was funny how they had Angelique Boyer playing a hoodrat in Teresa. They had to dye her hair dark for that role.

          • JojoRaze

Man, you have to see Maria Isabel. They have in on YT. They were running it on Telemundo, iirc, last year and I was hooked. I watched parts I missed on YouTube. Adela Noreiga was good in that one. She had such great chemistry with Fernando Carillo.

I never knew Galilea Montijo was ever in telenovelas. I’m just used to her being in the concursos, the game shows and as I was skipping through some channels last year saw that she was very pregnant with a big ole rock on her finger in five inch heels. I was like Go ‘head Ms. Galilea.

Barack was supposed to take Michelle down to Golden Corral. It’s what black people are supposed to do.

—-White House publishes YouTube videos of children advocating gun reform – –

    — – —The White House posted a set of four videos Thursday of children reading their letters to the president encouraging a solution to the problem of gun violence.

The videos featured the four children who appeared Wednesday at the president’s event announcing his comprehensive proposals in the wake of the elementary school shooting in Newtown, Conn.

    — -One of the videos features 11-year old Julia Stokes telling the president weapons should be “very hard for people to buy.”

    – —“The only thing they do is harm or kill,” the girl says. “I know that laws have to be passed by Congress, but I beg you to try very hard to make guns not allowed.”

    — -Obama mentioned this letter during his address Wednesday, when he urged lawmakers to pass bans on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips and agree to universal background checks intended to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.

    – — –5 Examples Of The GOP’s ‘Dark Vein Of Intolerance’ – — –

    – – – —Colin Powell is a still a Republican. The man who served President Reagan and both Bushes refuses to leave the party that once prayed for him to run for its presidential nomination.

But he also refuses to to remain silent while he sees the Party of Lincoln run rampant with hostility toward everyone but straight white males.

“There’s also a dark vein of intolerance in some parts of the party,” Powell said — on NBC’s Meet the Press. When asked to explain, he said, “What I mean by that is they still sort of look down on minorities.”

Powell cited specific examples of Republican policies designed to prevent African-Americans from voting, the birthers, and Sarah Palin and John Sununu’s racially provocative language.
    – — -SNIP – — –
After saying that Powell’s voting for Obama twice basically invalidates the former Secretary of State’s position, Minor suggests Powell “actively involve himself in transforming the GOP.”

But the problem with the GOP is that no top Republicans are willing to call out the GOP’s intolerance. Powell is trying to help the GOP see what most everyone but diehard right-wingers see. And when it gets pointed out that the Republican Party is losing support from every group but married white males, often Republicans insult the groups they’ve alienated even more by suggesting they only vote Democrat because they’ve been promised “gifts.”

In case Republicans need more explanation, here are five clear examples of the intolerance teeming through parts of America’s right wing.

Janet Jackson Could Get $500 Million Just to Stay Married At Least Five Years

Janet Jackson will be entitled to $500 million if she stays married for a short five years.

Allegedly, the singer and Wissam al-Mana got secretly engaged last December and are planning to jump the broom in a lavish Muslim wedding in Qatar in the spring this year.

However, the potential union isn’t without critics. Her fiancée’s lawyers advised the billionaire to sign a pre-nup to protect his money, but he’s deciding against it, probably because she’s got her own fortune.

But he actually agreed to give her $500 million if they stay married at least five years.

    (Whoa, say What!)

The 46-year-old singer and performer has been married twice before and was in a seven-year relationship with Jermaine Dupri

Michelle Obama turned 49 on Thursday. The press following the first couple didn’t see them, but a photo posted earlier in the day on the first lady’s new White House Twitter account showed her with a new hairstyle that includes bangs.

The White House said that a group of friends was joining the Obamas for their meal, which comes ahead of a busy weekend of inaugural activities.
