While the message of the commercial was compelling, Dante’s afro hairstyle got just as much, if not more, attention.
His natural hairstyle became a symbol of his father’s campaign, and
some have even argued that Dante’s unabashedly black look helped woo black voters to his white father’s side.

New Leadership Team for the White House Initiative on HBCUs
Posted on September 12, 2013 by ejones
President Obama has named the new leadership team for the White
House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities
(HBCUs). Joining the White House Initiative as Executive Director is Dr. George Cooper, with Dr. Ivory Toldson joining as the Deputy Director. Both will start on September 16.
Bitter Boyce know about this?
I’m bitter about Ivory Toldson not helping me out a few months ago! The eyebrow, she shoots upward when someone doesn’t offer a common courtesy of returning a business phone call or e-mail. Unless Howard is holding his place, he has to leave at some point.
This is what Black media should be reporting:
U.S. Education Department Reaches Agreement with Lee
County, Ala., School District on Equal Access to Advanced Placement
Courses, High–Level Learning Opportunities for African American Students
September 10, 2013
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR)
announced today that it has entered into a first-of-its-kind resolution
agreement in Alabama. The Lee County School District entered into an
agreement to ensure that all students, including African American
students, are provided an equal opportunity and equal access to Advanced Placement (AP) courses and other higher-level learning opportunities that will provide students with the skills necessary for success in college and careers.
Excellent! AP classes helped my Kiddos get scholarships & a leg up in college. This opportunity should be open to all good students without a fight. We had to struggle a bit for oldest daughter to get the chance. One of her teachers (racist biscuit) tried to block it but we fought.
Back in the day, it certainly did seem to be a hotbed of white superiority. The AP English teacher at my high school was a trip and a half and she was the sponsor for the National Honor Society, to which she would allow no more than 1 nonwhite a semester.
You might get a laugh from this. Oldest daughter calls herself “Patient Zero.” That’s a term that comes from her work with CDC & medical research. Patient Zero is the person first infected who spreads it to others.
Daughter says that she was the one who came up against it first, the one we fought like tigers for so it was easier for our other kiddos. She laughs and says: “After they had to deal with you once, they would give you anything not to do it again! I AM THE ONE who started it all and you roasted that b*tch who told me I was worthless!”

Awesome. It always sucked being the only Black kid in AP classes, and the thing is there were a few of my peers that would have aced those courses but for their backward thinking guidance counselors. 30+ years later I still get pissed off thinking about it.
Don’t even get me started….
Thank you for that link from philly.com about public college also cheating the poor to give aid to the wealthy.

The Rise of the New New Left
Bill de Blasio’s win in New York’s Democratic primary isn’t a local story. It’s part of a vast shift that could upend three decades of American political thinking. By Peter Beinart
by Peter Beinart Sep 12, 2013 4:45 AM EDT
Maybe Bill de Blasio got lucky. Maybe he only won because he cut a sweet ad featuring his biracial son. Or because his rivals were either spectacularly boring, spectacularly pathological, or running for Michael Bloomberg’s fourth term. But I don’t think so. The deeper you look, the stronger the evidence that de Blasio’s victory is an omen of what may become the defining story of America’s next political era: the challenge, to both parties, from the left. It’s a challenge Hillary Clinton should start worrying about now.
To understand why that challenge may prove so destabilizing, start with this core truth: For the past two decades, American politics has been largely a contest between Reaganism and Clintonism. In 1981, Ronald Reagan shattered decades of New Deal consensus by seeking to radically scale back government’s role in the economy. In 1993, Bill Clinton brought the Democrats back to power by accepting that they must live in the world Reagan had made. Located somewhere between Reagan’s anti-government conservatism and the pro-government liberalism that preceded it, Clinton articulated an ideological “third way”: Inclined toward market solutions, not government bureaucracy, focused on economic growth, not economic redistribution, and dedicated to equality of opportunity, not equality of outcome. By the end of Clinton’s presidency, government spending as a percentage of Gross Domestic Product was lower than it had been when Reagan left office.
For a time, small flocks of pre-Reagan Republicans and pre-Clinton Democrats endured, unaware that their species were marked for extinction. Hard as they tried, George H.W. Bush and Bob Dole could never muster much rage against the welfare state. Ted Kennedy never understood why Democrats should declare the era of big government over. But over time, the older generation in both parties passed from the scene and the younger politicians who took their place could scarcely conceive of a Republican Party that did not bear Reagan’s stamp or a Democratic Party that did not bear Clinton’s. These Republican children of Reagan and Democratic children of Clinton comprise America’s reigning political generation.
By “political generation,” I mean something particular. Pollsters slice Americans into generations at roughly 20-year intervals: Baby Boomers (born mid-1940s to mid-1960s); Generation X (mid-1960s to early 1980s); Millennials (early 1980s to 2000). But politically, these distinctions are arbitrary. To understand what constitutes a political generation, it makes more sense to follow the definition laid out by the early-20th-century sociologist Karl Mannheim. For Mannheim, generations were born from historical disruption. As he argued—and later scholars have confirmed—people are disproportionately influenced by events that occur between their late teens and mid-twenties. During that period—between the time they leave their parents’ home and the time they create a stable home of their own—individuals are most prone to change cities, religions, political parties, brands of toothpaste. After that, lifestyles and attitudes calcify. For Mannheim, what defined a generation was the particular slice of history people experienced during those plastic years. A generation had no set length. A new one could emerge “every year, every thirty, every hundred.” What mattered was whether the events people experienced while at their most malleable were sufficiently different from those experienced by people older or younger than themselves.
Not so sure that his analysis matches realities. It’s a little too white male-derived to make good sense.
BO is not a continuation or an extender of a Clinton Democrat. And, he didn’t use Dean’s campaign as a template. He BUILT a social/cultural/political template that is going to be relevant for a bit.
This article seems to depict PBO as a Clintonite, side eye.
What explains de Blasio:
* Quinn’s semi-alliance with Bloomberg (a lot of people disliked what they believe is him buying a third third term) + Bloomberg acting a fool over stop and frisk–she couldn’t distance herself from him and he reminded Democratic voters of why a completely new direction is required
* John Liu imploding due to fundraising scandals
* Weiner imploding due to freaknastiness
* Thompson’s steady but milquetoast nature
* A not great Republican frontrunner gave space for Democratic primary voters to go further left because he’s not a threat
Just as with President Obama, IMO de Blasio primary voters are a pragmatic bloc who balanced electability with ideology. Perhaps I’m misreading, but that article seems to be signalling an ascendance of emos which is laughably not happening at all.
My take. Just like noisemakers tried to crown Quinn heiress apparent, don’t believe the hype about Hillary. Though it took him to long to get to it.
Dog whistling like 2008 will be blown up by Black Twitter – shit will be shut down. Bloomberg doing it was no help. Same will go for Bill AGAIN.
I agree the President isn’t a Clintonite and he did 50 State Strategy 1 better.
Watching Obama clean up Bush and Clinton shit – NY may feel de Blasio can move past Koch/Guiliani/Bloomberg entrenching “2 New York’s” and give hope to struggling people. JMO.
ICAM, especially the last paragraph.
The President actually put the 50-state strategy in place instead of just braying about it.
__________________I’m sorry….I bust out laughing at your “* Weiner imploding due to freaknastiness”
I was reading along fine till that line now I can’t stop laughing.
Just the facts, ma’am lol.
I disagreed with his take that Obama was a continuation of the democrats of the 90′s. But I do agree that the new electorate is shifting to the left and away from the Reagan – Clinton period. I recall reading an article form 2007 where they said that Obama and Axelrod said that the country is shifting from the Reagan era and that his potential election would represent that shift.
I don’t think Beinart was talking about the emo left but a new left which is more pragmatic. I think we are seeing it to a degree with the new Democrats who have been elected in the senate and house who are further to the left than the previous elected officials. The person who runs in 2016 on the democratic side will most likely take more liberal positions on a number of issues that were not acceptable when Gore and Kerry were running for President.
Those are great points. Maybe I’ll read the article again with this in mind.
The bottom line of what he’s saying: Reagan=Bush I = Clinton =Bush 2 = Obama. They’re all the same, but Bill de Blasio is DIFF’RENT! He’s a TRUE PROGRESSIVE!
Here are the detailed Cliff Notes of what he’s trying to say:
Most pollsters define a generation as every 20 years:
* Boomers (late 40s-60s)
* Gen X (late 60s-early 80s)
He says that is wrong, that a generation is defined by what’s going on politically. Since Reagan=Bush 1=Clinton=Bush 2=Obama everybody born from the late 40s to the early 80s are all in the same generation. But everybody born after the early 80s grew up when it was KEWL to be lib’rul so we will finally get a true lib’rul, not the fake one known as Obama.
what upsets me is that PBO spent his first term CLEANING UP BILL CLINTON’S SHYT.
Up and down…damn near everything PBO has had to deal with originated with Bill Clinton.

– - – Washington, D.C.’s Mayor Vincent Gray on Thursday vetoed the so-called “living wage bill” that would have required big-box retailers such as Wal-Mart to pay workers at least $12.50 an hour.
“While the intentions of its supporters were good, this bill is simply a woefully inadequate and flawed vehicle for achieving the goal
we all share,” said Gray in a statement. Formally called the Large
Retailer Accountability Act of 013 (LRAA), Gray’s statement said the
bill would have harmed job growth and economic development.
The bill had set up a clash between the mayor, the bill’s supporters
and the big retail chains that was being watched closely by labor and
other cities across the nation. Workers at retailers and fast food
restaurants have been holding increasingly large and vocal protests to boost the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour. Businesses have argued that raising the wage would end up harming workers by reducing jobs.

Up to 30 failing Mississippi schools could face state takeovers
Sep. 12, 2013 1:20 PM
Thirty or more Mississippi schools as early as next fall could see their entire staffs fired – from principal to custodians – and new hires made by the state if they earn an “F” rating from the state Department of Education for a third year in a row.
That was the dour news delivered today to members of the state Board of Education from Larry Drawdy, who oversees school conservatorships for the department. The action would be required by legislation passed in 2010, dubbed the “new start” law, by the Mississippi Legislature.

TV Host Julie Chen Says She Was Pressured Into Eyelid Surgery
“So, I asked my news director … over the holidays if anchors want to take vacations, could I fill in? And he said, ‘You will never be on this anchor desk, because you’re Chinese.’ He said ‘Let’s face it Julie, how relatable are you to our community? How big of an Asian community do we have in Dayton? On top of that because of your Asian eyes, I’ve noticed that when you’re on camera, you look disinterested and bored.’
“So, what am I supposed to say to my boss? I wanted to cry right then and there. It felt like a dagger in my heart, because all of my life I wanted to be a network anchor,” she continued.
She then went on to explain how the situation took her back to her childhood growing up in Queens, New York, experiencing racism, and how the kids on the bus would make “ching chong” comment on the bus. “It was racism,” she said.
“So I started recording my newscasts every day and all I could see was my eyes, and I’d ask myself, ‘Does he have a point?’ I’d always ask myself, ‘Do I look bored?’
“So I started meeting with agents for career advice, and this one big-time agent basically told me the same thing. He had the biggest names in the business. And he told me the same thing. He said, ‘I cannot represent you unless you get plastic surgery to make your eyes look better.’ He then whips out a list of plastic surgeons who have done this procedure.”

I think racism played a factor as well as having an attractiveness deficit.
Looks like she had more than just eye surgery. Some sad shit, though, POC having to think they must meet European standards of beauty.
It’s just about true, in most cases !
She doesn’t look like the same person.
Nose & eye job, better make up & better lighting.
eta: Sad that all indications are the cosmetic work helped.
After reading the article, I wonder if she’s saying Connie Chung had work done.
All I’m saying is Julie Chen 1.0 wouldn’t be married to the head of CBS like Julie Chen 2.0!
(shrug) No disagreement from me.
I think she had an eye job.
Connie’s alleged work has been talk among the Chinese for a few decades now. A Chinese Canadian friend told me that scuttlebutt 20+ years ago.
She looks like Tiffani Amber Thiesson’s asian doopleganger.
She does look like Tiffani. Am I the only one who though Tiffani Amber was very overrated in the looks and figure department.
From the proper angle, with one eye squinted, and perhaps through a blurry mirror, tiffani was cute. But that was for 5 minutes and many years ago. She is edgy and bitchy now and I mean that in a good way.

So wait…I’m the only one that went out on a limb and picked the Jets tonight?? uhoh.
What did you see Sunday that makes you think they’ll be ready tonite?
Not a darn thing…just a hunch. LOL
Ah shit, they in this b i itch!
I am married to a Jets fan. He believes, bless his cotton socks.
I loled so hard at this. My nephew was a Jets fan when he was in elementary school when Chad Pennington was the qb and my nephew got disillusioned with them and became a Patriots fan….I’m a Giants girll…I watched my first football game when they won the Superbowl in 07 and have lved them evr since. When my nephew said he was a Pats fan, I was so hurt. but now he’s at Wesleyan in CT where Bellecik went to college so he’s among friends. I called him a traitor when he’s home, though.
My husband has been a fan since Broadway Joe. His mother was a fan so he is a legacy fan of them, the Mets, and the Knicks. Do not mention Bill B to him!
I am conflicted! I don’t like the owner of the Jets. But I think I like their new QB.
Woody Johnson? Seems appropriately named. He’s an ass but I think he’s put a lid on some off his mouthing off on matters non-football. Most of the owners in the NFL are right wingers so he seems consistent in that.
“Most of the owners in the NFL are right wingers so he seems consistent in that.”
You speak Truth! I should know better given the owners of my pathetic SD Chargers. Although they were not upfront, and in your face, about supporting Mitt Romney in 2012, as the Jets owner was, they are still die hard Republicans.
So is Dan “no, I won’t change the name of the Redskins despite how many times I hear how offensive it is” Snyder and he’s a relatively young owner, being still in his 40s.

AI haven’t really commented on the NYTimes publishing the Op-Ed, because to be honest, I was just absorbing it.
Since January 20, 2009, I thought that I had seen all the ways that this President could be disrespected, but time after time, I have been proven wrong.
If anyone would tell me that any major newspaper, would publish an Op-Ed from the former head of the KBG who goes around the world murdering his opponents in plain sight, and allow him to lecture the United States, ABOUT ANYTHING, I just would have never believed it.
White folks is something.
They have lost their fucking minds.
Since the moment Barack Obama was elected President, they have lost their fucking minds.
They can’t stand it – neither the left or the right
That this smart as hell, brilliant man and politician is President of the United States.
He has given them NOTHING by which they can tear him down.
Not that they haven’t tried.
He is the most polled about President in the history of the Presidency.
I have commented for years that it’s a miracle that the President has any approval ratings at all, considering that the coverage of his Presidency has been proven to be 90% negative. When that study came out, it was a lightbulb moment for me that has never left.
AIN’T NO WAY that anyone’s coverage could be 90% unless it WAS ON PURPOSE.
And, despite their asses, this President was re-elected, as he and his team WENT AROUND THEM.
They don’t realize that their denigration of THE PRESIDENCY doesn’t end with Barack Obama.
If the next President is White, you just don’t get to put that genie back in the bottle.
And they still don’t get it…every non-White person who isn’t a sellout is observing this…
They continue to believe that we lived on Mars during the previous 43 White Presidents, and that they are just ‘ that slick’ that the shyt they do goes over our heads.
Now, you can call me a tinfoil hat wearer if you want to, but here it is:
They’ve been mad ever since the President stepped up to the microphone and said,
” You know what…let’s get the Congress to VOTE on Syria.”
From that moment, President Barack Obama fucked their shyt up.
He fucked up their plans that they had for ‘ war coverage’.
He fucked up their plans to say Syria=Iraq every hour upon the hour.
He fucked up their plans that they had to go along with the Republicans when they were going to attempt to impeach this President if he had gone into Syria. They would have played the ‘ but there must be something’ card bullshyt just like they did when they didn’t call out the birthers for what they were- fucking racists.
Then comes the ‘ well, maybe we will give up control of our chemical weapons stash’ without one American missile being launched, and their mouths are hanging open…they can’t stand it.
No….President Barack Obama upended all that, and keeps on walking, and they don’t know what to do.
So, in the throes of Obama Derangement Syndrome, they pimp Assad, and Vladimir Putin.
THAT is how desperate they are.
So, like others, I sit and observe the disrespect being shown this President. ….and like others, I’m taking names and my memory will be long.
They think somebody is playing with them.
NOBODY is playing with them…and those that aren’t right, don’t be surprised when you get knocked upside the head by that reality.
Tinfoil hat out.
Bingo. I cannot like this enough.
In order to remain sane I have to keep reminding myself that he got elected TWICE by big margins. That most Americans have some sense. I’m waiting for the day when I can’t drive around the corner without seeing Barack Obama Middle School, Michelle Obama Child Care Center, Barack Obama International Airport cause I know that shit is coming. His presidential library will see more foot traffic than all living presidents combined.
He is the most popular man on the planet and when he leaves office he’s going to get bigger because he will be able to apply that massive intellect to what he wants to do.
This faction of crazy-ass white people cannot accept that he is smarter than they are and more importantly HE DOES NOT NEED THEM. That’s is the basis of their collective butthurt. He has changed the game.
I believe that when PBO is out of office, he will be so much bigger than just an former American president. He will be a Mandela-like figure on the world stage. And that’s gonna make the haters even madder. This black man will probably loom even LARGER once he’s OUT of office!
White folks is something.
They have lost their fucking minds.
Since the moment Barack Obama was elected President, they have lost their fucking minds.
DING DING DING DING DING DING
WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!
I confess that between that vile ‘joy of humiliating the President’ article in The Nation and the Putin op-ed today I just broke down and cried. It hurts my heart so, what they’re doing to this good good man. His strength is an inspiration but sometimes it’s just all too much.
I take comfort from something my husband said earlier in the week, and very quietly so: I don’t think the President cares about who gets credit for anything. He just want to get things done. It’s true. He surrounds himself with people who care about him. They are his shelter over some very rocky shoals. He’ll be all right.

To be honest after reading the article in The Nation I felt so deeply hurt for having spent so much of my meager dollars subscribing to that rag for many years. The main reason I did was because I enjoyed reading Patricia Williams’ posts. Thank God I stopped my subscription more than two years ago.
Thank you Rikyrah for expressing so well everything I feel! I asked this question in a comment at TOD: “Would the NYT have published an Op.Ed from the Soviet Union Prime Minister, Nikolai Khrushchev, bashing President John F. Kennedy, during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis?” Everywhere you look, it’s very plain that the U.S. media applies different standards to President Obama. Standards that were never applied to the previous 43 presidents before him. That includes the fact that many in the media rarely address him as President Obama. To them he is just Obama. To people, like the columnist Maureen Dowd, he is simply Barry!
I’d make hot sticky love to this post if I could.

—- Heritage Puts Anti-Obamacare Billboard In Times Square After State Announces Huge Premium Drop–
- – —Tucked up above 42nd Street in Times Square, situated
next to advertisements for Ripley’s Believe It or Not and Madame Tussaud’s, is a new political message that feels out of place in a space touting the latest in fashion and entertainment.
The billboard, sponsored by the Heritage Foundation, is shaped like a federal tobacco disclaimer and warns New Yorkers about the dangers of Obamacare: “WARNING: Obamacare may be hazardous to your health”:
- – - –SNIP —–
REALITY CHECK!: – - ->The health law’s mandate and the managed competition structure in the new exchanges will increase enrollment, state officials predict, and New Yorkers will see lower premiums when they enroll in one of 17 different insurance plans beginning in October. “An individual with annual income of $17,000 will pay about $55 a month for a silver plan, state regulators said. A person with a $20,000 income will pay about $85 a month for a silver plan, while someone earning $25,000 will pay about $145 a month for a silver plan.”
Ironically, the price drop comes as a result of a policy that the Foundation originally proposed, but is now furiously lobbying to repeal after it was included in President Obama’s health care law.

– —John Boehner is Under Federal Investigation for Campaign Finance Violations – -
– - –The FEC has announced that they are investigating Speaker of the House John Boehner for accepting dozens of illegal donations from the coal, energy, and gambling industries.
According to the Cleveland Plain Dealer:
The Federal Election Commission is examining whether dozens of political action committees and individuals contributed more than the legally allowed amount to House Speaker John Boehner during last year’s election cycle.
Boehner’s ties with special interest groups, and his eagerness to
brazenly take their money is well known, but the Speaker may have pushed things way too far in 2012. Speaker Boehner seems to have dodged an SEC investigation into his financial involvement with the companies that would benefit from the Keystone XL pipeline, but it appears that lure of Citizens United fueled conservative cash was too much for the Speaker to resist last year.
— – — SNIP- —
Similar allegations against Boehner surfaced in June, when an FEC complaint was filed against him for accepting $2.5 million in illegal donations from the Venezuelan government run Chevron. It turns out that Boehner’s illegal activities go way beyond Keystone XL and Chevron.

In email, George Zimmerman’s local police chief agrees he’s another “Sandy Hook” waiting to happen http://thkpr.gs/1bb9mAg
gee, if only there was someone who could do something about it…
Yup Zimmerman thought he was bad ass before he killed Trayvon now that he got away with murder he is worse. What he does not understand is that the next person he runs up on may not be a scared, unarmed kid. Trust if he does something horrible Trayvon’s parents and the black community will be to blame. They will say we made him mentally ill because we would not accept the verdict.
so true…so true
He’s a coward who targets women, kids, and easy wins like his aging father in law. Zimmerman would have never run up on a real thug. They can try to blame the black community but with his latest antics, it just won’t wash. He’s a barbarian who was raised to act like this; probably a rape or sexual molestation happened to him as a child to create this monster, like Ariel Castro.
Yea there is no telling what went down with him when he was a kid because the entire family is fucked up. I agree he would not run up on a real thug before he got away with murder but now that he has he is truly feeling himself. I know this is in bad taste but I hope he runs up on someone packing heat that will put him where he belongs.
From what I can see no Black people are around this man. I guess we are the boogie man under all situations.
You mean like….I don’t know….some entity empowered by the government of the people to like…maybe…protect citizens from dangerous individuals…like..what would that be called…we should see if the police chief knows of any such entity.
I said it yesterday, he will kill again. Take him off the streets and throw his ass in jail, before he reeks havoc on some other family.

You’ve gotta be f-ing kidding me…NYT published that Putin op-ed at the behest of a PR firm???? Total, complete, utter corruption; this is madness.
That awkward moment @NYTimes claims to be independent but uses PR Firm Ketchum to promote pro-Putin propaganda. http://www.buzzfeed.com/rosiegray/ketchum-placed-controversial-putin-op-ed …
The public relations firm Ketchum is responsible for placing a controversial editorial that appeared under Russian President Vladimir Putin’s byline in the New York Times on Wednesday night.
Ketchum is the main PR firm used by the Russian government. Using documents publicly filed with the Department of Justice, ProPublica showed last year how Ketchum places pro-Putin op-eds under the bylines of “seemingly independent professionals” in various news outlets like CNBC and the Huffington Post.

Oh yeah, I saw this earlier today….and yet I’m supposed to continue to respect the New York Times? A PR firm is buying an op-ed? THAT’S how its done these days? Blatant propaganda?
Ketchum, the agency that placed Putin, was the agency Bush’s HHS used to place fake articles in the US press.
Dollars left on nightstands…
Putin got heauxes in different area codes.
And different paybands, apparently. This is what I was talking about a couple of weeks ago about lobbyists for foreign governments. As long as they register and report, it’s all on the up and up.
It’s really breathtaking to witness how the election of a brilliant Black man has led so many people to plain insanity! Even people who are supposedly smart and well educated just don’t know how to deal with a black man who is smarter than them. Even more infuriating to them is his instance on carrying out his duties as President without fear or excuses.
I personally find it quite amusing, and quite telling too, that the Russian strong man, who was not so long ago reviled by almost every one, is now, all of a sudden, the hero and the darling of both the right and the left. Valdimir Putin is now the “Great White Hope” who will save the world, including the U.S., from the evil Black tyrant who was elected twice as President of the United States.
Russian leaders never seem to gracefully or graciously exit stage left, do they? Whether by putsch or some other means, I am not predicting a good end to Vlad the Player’s reign either. They do messy well.
You absolutely make an excellent point, Conlakappa! When the dust settles, after Assad has been forced to give up his chemical weapons, it’s not clear how Putin would be viewed as a winner.
Moreover, I am sure people in Russia who are being oppressed will start demanding to be treated equal under God. I am not sure that Putin can stomach being challenged. For me, I look forward to seeing how the righties and the lefties Obama haters in America respond once the Russians begin to demand such freedoms as the freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, and freedom to marry whomever they chose, from their new hero, Putin.
I hope Putin has taken adequate protections. Now that he is a Russian journalist his life may be in grave danger!
He`s been on it.

—HHS: ObamaCare provision saved consumers $1.2 billion – -
—— —Consumers have saved $1.2 billion because of provisions in ObamaCare that strengthen oversight of insurance premiums, the administration said Thursday.
The healthcare law provided $250 million in grants to help states
bolster their review of insurers’ rates. It also gave the federal
government the power to review certain premium increases but not the power to stop them from taking effect.
Those rate review provisions have lowered premiums by $1.2 billion since they took effect in 2011, the Health and Human Services Department said in a report Thursday.
“Thanks to the health care law, we are seeing that holding insurance companies accountable is leading to increased competition and saving billions of dollars for consumers across the country,” HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a statement.
The administration has previously touted savings from other provisions of the healthcare law. A policy that governs how insurers spend their premiums has saved consumers nearly $5 billion, HHS said in June.–

Bill Thompson: I’m Staying In Mayor’s Race Until NYC 2013 Primary Votes Are Counted
BY Celeste Katz
Bill Thompson said Thursday night that he will not concede the Democratic primary for mayor just yet.
Updated: Our Erin Durkin reports Thompson emerged from a meeting with top party leaders to say he’ll stay in the game at least until the Board of Elections does a recanvass of the voting machine results from Tuesday’s primary.
“It continues to become clearer and clearer that there are tens of thousands of votes that are out there. We believe that the votes should be counted. The first step in that is the machine canvass on Friday and Saturday. And then we’ll go from there,” the ex-controller said.
“But that’s the first step. We believe that the votes should be counted. We believe that people should be heard. That’s it.”
Thompson pulled 26.16% of the primary night vote to Bill de Blasio’s 40.13%, per unofficial BOE tallies, with more than 78,000 paper ballots still out.
De Blasio must hold on to more than 40% of the vote to win the primary outright

This afternoon Chubb Rock who has relocated here and is the afternoon drivetime deejay, decided his question he wanted to just “throw out there” to the people of Atlanta was about the President. Trying to be too cute by half, he said well the President promised some things (didn’t say what things) then he said you know with the situation in Syria and all of the problems we have here, 90 plus percent of black people voted for him in 08 and 12, so are we happy with what he’s done for us?Imagine his shock when the people that I heard that called in were all “I love my President” and proceeded to cite Congressional obstruction and blatant racism from the opposition. Suffice to say, as rikyrah pointed out below, with all the negative media coverage its a wonder our President continues to have ANY positive approval ratings at all, but I think the bottom line is, WE HAVE SENSE…GOOD OLE FASHION COMMON SENSE. There are more folks who quietly watch it all and know the deal. They don’t have to get on blogs or twitter or any social media at all..they can be like my parents who live in rural Alabama with all media being just as right wing and biased as all get out and STILL see through it…see it just as clear as crystal. President Obama can sit in that Oval Office and not do another damn thing from here until Jan 20, 2017 and my support of him won’t waver one iota. Not one little bit.
Chubb Rock’s ignorant behind probably read a blog post by Bitter Boyce for the first time and probably thought he was on to something and would be able to make his audience feel stupid. Then he got his ass handed to him.
His ass even trotted out the usual talking points of the soul patrol with the “when Gays wanted something he did this, when Latinos wanted something, he did that”….the same shit we have heard time and time again. I was just shaking my head and hoping nobody would call in co-signing that mess. I only heard 3 calls and I think he moved on to another subject because the 3 I heard told him they were ardent supporters. He even asked one caller did she think the country was more divided since Obama was elected and she told him we only SEE the division more because the racists can’t hide it because they’re so mad and never thought they’d see the day a black man was President…but the division itself, ain’t new.
Sounds like the talking points, along with the attached $100 bills, are filtering through black radio. We know it’s big and they finally figured it out.
“He even asked one caller did she think the country was more divided since Obama was elected and she told him we only SEE the division more because the racists can’t hide it because they’re so mad and never thought they’d see the day a black man was President…but the division itself, ain’t new.”
Bless that caller for speaking GOD’s TRUTH! President Obama did not cause the division. His election simply helped to bring the covert Black haters out in the open. That includes, by the way, the so called progressives who believe in white superiority. As for the minuscule black haters the media parades in front of the T.V., to try to plant the seeds of division in the black community, most of them are grifters or envious people who are no longer regarded as the head Negroes. I am particularly thinking of poor Tavis Smiley. I don’t think he has been able to hold a “Black Agenda Conference” ever since President Obama was elected. That means real money in his pocket that he used to receive from all his corporate sponsors.
Good to hear most are not bamboozled by what they hear see on TV.
“WE HAVE SENSE…GOOD OLE FASHION COMMON SENSE.”
I am with you 100%! Except for some envious black folks, or those trying to make a buck, I think the vast majority of Black folks see through all this racist BS that has united the MSM, the so called leftist liberals and the overt racists right wingers against President Obama. Some of us who are older remember that what’s happening to President Obama happened to the early Black Mayors, like Chicago’s Harold Washington.
Deport Ted Cruz back to Canada.

SMH…..oh…that’s why its offensive?? jackassThe Last Word @TheLastWord9m
@chrislhayes: I think Americans aren’t used to being lectured to by other world leaders which is why so many people have taken offense…
I`m so glad they explained that.
Exactly why I’m no longer a regular watcher of MSNBC; too much bullshit. During the last admin, the world repeatedly expressed criticism, dismay and at times condemnation due to who was in the WH. They are liars to claim that the US is not used to hearing criticism from the world. Exactly why I just can’t be bothered watching; that channel can no longer be trusted to keep it real rather than circling the wagons around their little blog and media clique.
We were in the viewing habit, but I can’t even get through the intros to Hayes’ and Maddow’s shows anymore, I peel away to do yard work or phone calls or whatever.
Though I was glad that Ed Schultz got his spot back because of his coverage of labor and free health clinics, I cannot watch his show for long. I don’t like the talk radio style bluster. And, his speaking up for public education (his promo on MSNBC informs us that his Mom was a teacher) rings a little hollow since he voted for the GOP for years.
I’m so glad there are other places that aggregate breaking news and links these days.
What, no grouting?!! /cheesy grin
No, no grouting, no water heater repairs, no pulling cars out of snowdrifts… I’m not as talented as other people we know.
My excuses are less creative but, somehow, I still show up late to comment threads.
Sorry you are delayed but nice to talk to you in real time. Take care, good friend.
LOL! I’m here because I was tired from yesterday so I too a nap this afternoon & now I can’t sleep. Does that count?
Real time ’cause I’m too scared to fall asleep here! I also have my contacts in, after that tiny terror of an eye doctor warned of the grave consequences of sleeping in my contacts. So I have to add solution, case, and glasses to my bug-out travel kit. I was able to get toothpaste and a toothbrush from the vending machine.
See this is why I cannot tolerate liberals like Hayes. Their reflexive anti-Americanism. Sure there’s a lot of fucked up things that America has done and does, but other countries ain’t fucking blameless This desire to cheer any jackass that talks isht about America is why most folks cannot stand leftists and cartoon liberals like that self righteous clown.

notice how news UN confirmed Assad behind “massive” chem attacks barely caused ripple among DC press? chems of no interest; all abt Obama
The mission of the DC press is very clear:use any angle, or any excuse, to attack President Obama. Be sure to follow Karl Rove’s formula when attacking him. Any thing positive that President Obama says or does loudly, and repeatedly, report it as a negative. Continuously report the manufactured negative construction of what President Obama says or does. By the time people catch on that what is being reported as negative is actually positive, quickly move on to a new topic/issue. Besides, the mission of DC press would have already been accomplished. The negativity about President Obama would have already been planted deeply that it would be hard for the President and his supporters to be able to effectively debunk or reverse it.
You nailed that Nath but I don’t think it is working as well as press thinks or would like. When I talk to people in my community they mostly think PBO is doing a good job. These people are not political & don’t follow every word out of some pundit’s mouth.
Aquagranny, you are absolutely right about people in our communities who have developed antennas to detect media lies and hence see through all the media garbage about President Obama. I should have emphasized that the MSM message is primarily targeted to people, especially those in the white communities, who are easily swayed by media propaganda.
Who’s up? Who’s down? What do the latest polls say? It doesn’t really matter who pays for the polls, what sample is sampled, and how the questions are worded.
This is what is considered American journalism these days. They have no interest in having any discussions about difficult topics, or paying for people who might have experience. It’s just about People magazine/TMZ level analysis. And, oldtimers like Chris Matthews, who should know better but are too lazy to challenge any of this, should be ashamed of themselves.
He really showed himself today when he talked about how crazy it was that Ted Cruz would talk about another 100 senators just like Jesse Helms- meaning Cruz wouldn’t have a seat in the Senate.
Instead of doing some math comment, Matthews could have helped educate younger viewers, or been on record at least, by exposing what an evil, racist, homophobic, woman hating bigot Helms was.
That would have required too much heavy lifting. The Beltway crowd speaks to themselves or people who are close enough to themselves, i.e., people who made their bones as young Congressional staffers in the Watergate era.

So the weather gods and travel from LaGuardia strike me again: I’m stuck in New York after flights were cancelled due to weather. This has been my history with LaGuardia–I don’t think I have taken a flight to/from it that wasn’t jacked up in multiple attempts over 25+ years. Mind you, I was only flying back in the hopes of getting home sooner, having taken the train up [its own story with the chick who sat next to me]. The first flight out, canceled. Stood in “special services” line for over an hour to get flight to which I’d been reassigned. That flight gets cancelled and just then the storm kicks up, with the rain pouring down and the thunder and lightning sounding like the overkill effects in Young Frankenstein. I call the airlines while eating dinner, thinking “who, me, panic?” and the guy tries to book me on an early afternoon Friday flight. I ask if there’s nothing sooner and he says he can put me on a mid-morning flight. I go back to the special line, where it felt less than special, and the woman gives me my ticket saying that’s the best they can do because I’m “only going to D.C.” I ask if there is a travelers aid and she tells me where to go. The guy says all he can do is give me the list of hotels but he’s sure they’re all booked. I call a central number, learn that all decent chain hotels are booked so get a room in “what is not a national chain but seems to get good ratings.” Let’s just say that it’s giving off a days-since-a-hooker-was-found-here/jury sequestration vibe. The good news is that we did seal the deal with the client! I’m only taking the train in future but that has brought an occasional woe. /end of whine about first-world problem.
My heart to yours! I was stranded in Newark airport once over night during a bad snow storm. Continental Airlines gave us snacks & huge amounts of alcohol so I did survive to fight & fly another day.
The only good thing about a crappy hotel is that you are less likely to find any bed bugs. Really! Believe it! Bed bugs are more likely to be found in the fancy hotels. My Hubby can stand witness to that!
I’m glad you did “seal the deal” Rest well.
The crazy thing is that the meeting, which we walked in not knowing if it was going to be a pitch or a handshake to seal the deal, was less than an hour but it was important for that client to meet us. He knew our firm by reputation/dealing with us once in a different setting and had heard from someone there who was happy with my work [where I had to work with a situation in South Africa without actually going to South Africa; you might recall my bitterness and my mother's too as she was sure she'd accompany me!], which was a boost and will be bandied about during my performance review shortly! He recommended someone else that will bring a much higher price tag. I likely won’t have the pleasure of working on it.
Ah, Newark. Work has taken me there as well, this time last year. Not a lot of hotels. USAIR wasn’t giving any booze or vouchers for food so I was on my own!
There was, of course, recent scandal about fancy-schmancy hotels having bedbugs. I guess the stench of dead hooker scares them away from the no-tell motels. I’m telling you, I can almost hear the spirit of Lenny Briscoe cracking wise about this place! They do have a continental breakfast that starts at 6:00 a.m. Oh, joy!
I am trying not to laugh but the Lenny Briscoe reference undid me.
Have you ever been to South Africa? It’s a very beautiful country & some of the people can be just amazingly wonderful. But lately, things have not been so good politically. Unemployment & crime are terrible.
My SIL’s Auntie godmother works for a women’s collective in Durban. Things are especially hard for the women. We worry about Auntie because a lot of what she does puts her in danger. I don’t mean to be negative. I’m just saying what little I know. Maybe the Santos were watching over you that you did not go there right now.
I miss Lenny Briscoe and treasure the years he was a character on that show! I still see him as Lumiere, even while watching him as Lenny. If he stepped a toe into the crystal-chandeliered foyer [I kid you not], he would have declared, “this place is a dump!”
Yes, I’d heard how unsafe places there are, especially Johannesburg, which is where the client was. I would love to go one day. An American friend has a farm there and built out the guest quarters first. When you come here in the Winnebago [yes, I still have faith you and your flying-averse sister will come!], I can talk to you about it.
Joburg has gotten terribly unsafe according to Auntie. She flew back there from US on her visit & was concerned about getting from there safely back to Durban. She went by car. We were all nervous but she made it.
Talked to my lovely and talented daughter in NYC earlier this evening and asked her how the weather was because some program around 2 Pacific Time showed a picture of the White House shrouded in fog and rain. It was probably meant to make some emo point but I focused on the weather details because of the people that I care about over on the East Coast.
She said that it was really hot and humid and her little dog just wanted to lounge around in front of the fan.
Sorry about your travel difficulties. I’ve never flown through LaGuardia.
Colorado is also getting hammered right now. Terrible flooding & some evacuations but my Fam is okay so far. I’m glad to hear your daughter is also okay.
The videos from Co have been incredible. I’ve lived in the West long enough to understand how dangerous dry creek beds and narrow canyons can be but the swiftness of the water on the city streets was amazing.
It is pretty bad. Flash flooding is incredibly dangerous. I’m praying it will stop soon. Most of my family is in Boulder, Jefferson & Weld counties. So far they are all safe.
Smart and strategic is the way the feds are selling implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Sheer marketing brilliance to use peer-to-peer communications: http://www.hhs.gov/news/press/2013pres/09/20130912b.html
