Thursday Afternoon Thread: Salute to Motown

The heart and soul of Motown has to be the one and only Stevland Hardaway Morris – Stevie Wonder.

It is a well known fact that other artists throughout the 70s would withhold releasing their own albums to get around competing with Stevie for a Grammy.

Throughout this period, Stevie Wonder nearly swept all possible Grammys he was eligible for. Winning for Best R&B Artist, Best Album, Best Song, Best Male Vocal, etc. While in-between albums in 1976, Paul Simon, in his acceptance speech for winning the Album of the Year Grammy jokingly thanked Stevie Wonder for not releasing an album that year. Stevie in fact did not release an album during that period because he was working on what would be his masterpiece double album entitled “Songs in the Key of Life”, released in 1976.

The one year he didn’t win, he didn’t release an album – because the one he was working on was about to slay the Grammy’s again. The one and only Stevie Wonder y’all!

For a more nuanced and considerate opinion of the new TV show shuffle at MSNBC, please go read BooMan’s FP post. Whether or not you like Ed Schultz or can’t stand him, at the very least you can tell that BooMan gave some actual thought to what the MSNBC landscape will possibly be like with less Ed rather than that crap over at Balloon Juice.

Ed Schultz Fills an Important Niche
    by BooMan

…Cynics can doubt Schultz’s sincerity and criticize him for his chameleon-like ambition, but I think he’s spent enough time now with working men and women that his commitment to their causes should be beyond question. He may have his faults, but he fills a critical niche among white progressives. I don’t like to paint people into tight categories, but the progressive movement is mainly made up of three groups. The first and most powerful group is made of lawmakers who represent urban areas with large minority populations. Most of these lawmakers are black, Latino, or Asian, and they dominate the Progressive Caucus in the House of Representatives. The second group is made up of a combination of the academic world and the liberal-minded professional classes. The scientific community has a foot in each of these camps. It’s this second group that dominates the progressive blogosphere. It’s also where you find most of the MSNBC lineup. Chris Hayes went to Brown University; Lawrence O’Donnell went to Harvard; Rachel Maddow was a Rhodes Scholar; Ezra Klein went to UCLA; Melissa Harry-Perry has a doctorate from Duke University and has taught at Princeton. So, where does Big Ed fit in? He represents the third group: labor. He represents the interests of all working men and women, regardless of race. In fact, he seems to me to have a better understanding of how the labor and urban/minority groups are co-dependent and are empowered when they stand together than any other progressive I’ve seen on television…

The white progressive movement is dominated by intellectuals who have advanced degrees from top universities. There is nothing wrong with that. Except, quite often, these eggheads forget that they are numerically quite small in the overall progressive movement. Big Ed is a key piece in this landscape. So is Melissa Harris-Perry, who bridges the academic-urban/minority groups…

    • GN

Without expressing an opinion either way on the switch from Schultz to Hayes (I don’t consume either media product), I have to raise an objection to the idea of some of these folks as huge intellectuals. They talk fast with a weird accent and are “snarky” which passes for brilliance in some respects but I just am increasingly seeing it as an affectation and a conceit. Maybe I’m just grumpy or something.

      • qosine

I agree. They’re position paper public policy think tanker, cable TV, entertainment, speaker circuit, book maker salesmen.

Their ideas are rehashed points from the 1990s, gleaned from grad school/public policy certificate programs. I studied Marcuse, Habermas, Miller, Kristeva, Beavoir, Foucoult et al in grad school. The field has moved on. White snarky hipsters haven’t.

I also studied Dunbar, R. Ellison, Wright, slave narratives (which of course, to get published had to be “authenticated” by white sponsors via introductions), S. Truth, Douglass and more. Why don’t they ever allude to those great writers/activists?

        God, they suck.

        • GN

          Incredibly well said.

          • qosine

            Thanks, GN!

          • Aquagranny911

You were the one who asked me yesterday about impressions of the new El Papi.

I talked to my one brother who is the lone practicing catholic among my siblings. He was not impressed. He & the church he attends pretty much do as they please, anyway. I’ve been to his church for family stuff & the priest is pretty cool. I like him. He was big about GOTV without telling people how to vote. I appreciated that.

The locals at my bodega were pretty much meh also since Rome did not pick Rivera Carrera, Cardinal from Mexico.

No real bangs…just a few whimpers.

I thought you might like to know.

          • qosine

            Thanks, AG. Helpful info.

        • Aquagranny911

“Suck” is a kind word but you have class. I will not taint your post by adding a few choice words of my own ♥

Imo, most are just PL grifters looking for the $$$. They have no real integrity or passion.

      • Aquagranny911

LOL!!! I can “talk fast with a weird accent” Does that make me brilliant? I never knew! Forgive the snark. I could not help myself. I do co-sign your post 100%.

        • qosine

I can talk non-stop!! Does that count, too?

          • Aquagranny911

            Absolutely!!!

        • GN

lol, you are incredibly brilliant ag and you know it! Your modesty, lack of affectation, true empathy, and refusal to lord your intelligence over others would make you a poor fit in that PL crew.

          • Aquagranny911

OMG! NO MAS! My face is so red my familia will think I’m stroking out.

Gracias! You are so very kind ♥ It really isn’t great intelligence just a lot of years watching the world go by, lol.

          • TyrenM

Co-sign GN. Plus you’ve been places and seen some thangs those people couldn’t imagine.

            You qualify.

      • Admiral_Komack

They are hawking their wares (their shows).
It doesn’t mean they are these great intellectuals.
They are the same as Tavis Smiley, in my opinion.

      • itgurl_29

        This, this, this!!

So right about the “accent” thing. They all sound exactly the same. It started with Maddow and now every other emo on tv has taken on her affectation and tone. It’s an actual accent. Even Melissa Harris Perry is now talking like them. And the tone is always pure snark.

I can’t stand them. I am no fan of Ed, but I can stomach in in comparison to the eggheads.

All I know is that those ratings are gonna drop big time for 8p.m. My parents watch MSNBC at night but they stopped watching Rachael since before the election. They like Ed a lot. I know they won’t be able to stomach Chris and all his snark and white boy pet issues that have nothing to do with them and their lives.

        • trose1

I do know alot of Black people like Ed. Rachel was a hit and miss.
I give the show 6 months. Chris is boring. He lacks personality.

        • rikyrah

Ed talked more about unions and the middle class than anyone else.

Ed was right there, supplementing Rev. Al and Larry O during the Trayvon Martin case.

          • TyrenM

Ed introduced me to Nina Turner. For that and that alone, he’ll be missed (4 about 5 minutes.)

I call it the “wiseass accent” syndrome. And it does hit people in a way. My own father cannot stand Chris Hayes, but he’ll watch Lawrence, Ed, Rev. Al, Chris Matthews and Martin Bashir. It is that accent, where it, along with their aura comes off as this white liberal condescension found in majority white, yet liberal areas. Its this, you don’t know better than me, though your experience lets you know first hand because I went to an Ivy League school and I have all these accolades and any opposing view from the lesser groups is not as important as my Ivy League researched and analyzed opinion.

Its why MHP even sends us through the wall. She does it. Remember that panel about “The Help” where they just dismissed the opinion of the domestic worker on the panel. This is the one reason why Liberals cannot get much done. Because these guys believe that they know everything due to their educational pedigree. They are as closed minded as conservatives that the vehemently criticize. They are dangerous, because as we saw in 2000, 2002, 2004, and 2010, they never take a long view of the consequences of their closed mindedness. They are only gonna talk about white liberal whiny ass bullshit which will do nothing but depress turnout for 2014 and keep our eyes off the ball in getting Democrats back in the House, and Governors offices, hampering any progress that Barack Obama can perform. Sometimes, I do wonder if these TV “Progressives” actually want anything done. Because they are the first to complain when Barack Obama gets something tangible on the table.

          • Town

            ———————————

I’ll always remember when Maddow had Susan Rice on, and at one point mentioned SHE was a Rhodes Scholar, and Susan Rice was all like “That’s nice boo boo, I was one too. Next.”

They like to lord their degrees & education over people who are actually about that life.

MHP reminds me of a kindergarten teacher. Well, she did back when I used to watch her show. So damned condescending!

They are all educated fools. Remember when the progressives voted for Ralph Nader because supposedly Gore was no different than Bush. They were no better than the Supreme Court in handing that election to Bush, the war criminal, and with all the recent reports about how much the Iraq war has cost this country, they should be ashamed to show their faces in public.

And the media will assist in the delusion that rethug policies absolutely had nothing to do with the outcome of the elections.

Boehner Says Election Losses Won’t Affect Budget Stance

WASHINGTON — Speaker John A. Boehner suggested Thursday that candidates and personalities – not Republican proposals on Medicare and spending cuts – contributed to Republican losses in November, as he vowed to press forward with a House budget plan that renews the push to shrink the government.
In short, Mr. Boehner, Republican of Ohio, said in an interview, the election losses would not deter his party from pressing its vision of reducing the size of government and turning government health care programs largely over to the private sector.

“There are a lot of things that decide an election, especially the two candidates that you have, the personalities that they have, positions they have taken,” he said.

“There are a lot of factors that went into that election,” he added. “I don’t know that that’s the issue. Eighty percent of the American people think that Washington has a spending problem.”

Like clockwork, when a Republican barely wins an election by electoral college and loses the popular vote, it means the people have endorsed 100% of our platform and no moderation is needed at all and the Democrats must do everything we want. When a Democrat wins an election resoundingly twice getting the majority of the popular vote……it means that the Republican platform is endorsed by 100% of the people and no moderation is needed at all and Democrats must do everything that we want.

      Gotta love that conservative “logic”.

    - — – Senators Destroy Ted Cruz’s Argument Against The Assault Weapons Ban- — -

    - —-A third measure to reform gun violence prevention passed the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday along party lines, but not without bitter opposition from Republicans, who claimed that such a ban would violate the Second Amendment and analogized restrictions on guns to censoring books under the First Amendment.

    - – -Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) battered Democrats with questions about whether they would support restrictions on the First or Fourth Amendments he claimed were similar to those an assault weapons ban would impose on the Second:

I pose to the senator from California [Sen. Diane Feinstein], would she deem it consistent with the Bill of Rights for Congress to engage in the same endeavor that we are contemplating doing with the Second Amendment in the context of the First or Fourth Amendment, namely, would she consider it constitutional for congress to specify that the first amendment shall apply only to the following books and shall not apply to the books that congress has deemed outside the protection of the Bill of Rights?

    – – - –READY!- —- – AIM! — — FI-YAH!!! L)L- — -

    - — -BOOM!!- –>But Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) obliterated his argument by noting the analogous actual restrictions on the actual First Amendment:

In reference to the question my colleague from Texas asked, would you limit books? Would you name specific books? Yeah. It’s constitutional within the ambit of the First Amendment to eliminate child pornography. And we have lots of laws that are very explicit about that. Very explicit. That are constitutional, that have been upheld as constitutional. Similarly, you can’t falsely scream fire in a crowded theater. Similarly, we have libel laws. Every one of these is an impingement on the sacred First Amendment, upheld as constitutional. There are reasonable limits on each amendment, and I think it is anomalous, to put it kindly, for either side to interpret one amendment so expansively and another amendment so narrowly that it just doesn’t add up because your interpretation of the Constitution should be consistent.- – - -

Bartender Behind Hidden Video Had Met Romney Before

…Said the bartender: “I handed him a diet Coke with lemon on it, because I was told that that’s what he drank… He took it and turned and didn’t say anything. I presented him the exact right drink that he wanted… Had it there, sitting there on a napkin. He took it out of my hand and turned his back without a ‘thank you’ or anything else.”

Romney is a rick prick, but there are also alot of people who are not rich who also treat “service” staff like they are less than or invisible.

Ya’ll know I’m a NOLA girl born and raised. If ya know anything ’bout NOLA then you know tourism is our bread and butter. So service staff are everywhere and I’d bet that over 1/2 of the working population in NOLA are in the tourism industry. A large number of my family have worked or currently work in the service industry. My paternal grandmother was a head chef at a bigtime French Quarter restaurant. My paternal grandfather was a cab driver. My father was a cook in the army. My father’s sister was a top chef and worked in a number of the well-known restaurants in NOLA before she retired after Katrina. My maternal grandmother and my mom’s sister are in housekeeping (my grandmother stopped when she became disabled and my aunt is still a housekeeper at both a motel and a local casino). My mom’s youngest sister works as a room service clerk in a 5star hotel in the Quarter. Two of my uncles work at 2 different French Quarter restaurants as sous chefs. Two of my younger cousins work as a waiter and a barback in 2 other restaurants different than my uncles and my cousin’s husband is a pastry chef at one of the La Madelaine’s bakeries in the city.

The stories my family have to tell about the way they are talked to by certain customers would piss anyone off. I won’t even begin to tell you the stories they tell about how service people get back at the people who think they can treat them like crap. Even regular everyday Joes sometimes forget that the waiter, bartender, housekeepers and other service staff are real people and just because they are being paid to “serve” you, it doesn’t mean that they don’t deserve some courtesy and decency when they do a good job. A Thank you goes a long way even when you don’t leave a tip.

    • Aquagranny911

Righteous rant! Tell it! I hate it when service people get treated like dirt & it isn’t always the ricos who do it either. I’ve seen some incredibly rude stuff done by some who should have been raised better. It always pisses me off!

    • rikyrah

I spent my college years earning my spending money in the service industry. I think everyone should spend a year working in the service industry – I believe you’d never treat anyone who serves again with disrespect…and, it totally shaped my viewpoint on how much you should tip.

    • qosine

      Absolutely!

I worked about 11 years in the service industry. I learned so much about getting along with people, serving without servility, and how to be a better customer.

Definitely agree about tipping. I figure, if I can’t afford the tip, I can’t afford the service.

Scott Prouty (the bartender) also mentioned how Romney walked in and started telling all the servers to speed it up. I guess that’s Romney’s idea of “leadership” – rudely ordering everyone around. I can see why his trips overseas were such a disaster.

      • JojoRaze

Before I was in a service industry I always learned to give people respect no matter their job. Mittens obviously never got this lesson and was caught out there. One thing that tells you the Obamas treat the little people well were the fact that the info about his college and post-grad girlfriends and even those pics of him smoking didn’t come out until after his election. People who knew him back when were protective of him b/c he had been good to them. They weren’t trying to ruin him, even the gf who said he had told her he wanted a black woman. She didn’t do a tour spilling the beans about her private life with him.

        • isonprize

‘runteldat’ as soon as he became a national figure.

And you know folks have been looking for dirt on him for a LOOOONG time. Wasn’t there a situation where somebody was actually constantly stalking him with a video camera, even following him into the mens room?

I am pissed off at media matters spreading this Chris Hayes “diversity chart” on the internet. All of a sudden media matters is concerned about media diversity. They have not said one word about the CNN execs who want to fire Soledad O’brien because she attracted 2 many minorities.
These people think we are dumb.
Media Matters: Chris Hayes Is Keeping The White Man Down
    I’m paraphrasing, of course.

Media Matters For America, the liberal watchdog that spends much of its time chewing on Fox News’ bones, rarely has anything nice to say. However, the big news that weekend warrior Chris Hayes will take over MSNBC’s 8 pm weekday time slot has prompted MMFA to release a study that shows Hayes’ show far outpaces other Sunday political shows in terms of diversity, booking a third fewer white male guests, and more than double the proportion of black guests, than the broadcast and cable competition.

Yeah, Jamil Smith – never mind that economic disaster awaiting PBO the day he walked into office. Oh, and healthcare for 30 million people is so trivial.

      • GN

And the DOJ has been going after abusive police departments. That this guy and many others in the PL are spreading the misimpression that this is something new, says everything about their intellectual dishonesty and willingness to mislead their product consumers to sell more media units.

        • JojoRaze

New Orleans being the major one. Investigstions take years to do properly so you won’t get a wrongful investigation a la Ted Stevens during Bush. I dislike these people so much because they feed on negativity and are unwilling to be the change and do grunt work thst makes movements possible.

    • GN

This is my issue right here with the PL. They’re not tough, hard-hitting, or especially adept at intelligent analysis. It’s that they spread bullshit. Even a cursory glance at the DOJ’s record with respect to abusive/crooked police departments could not POSSIBLY yield a sentence like “It’s about damned time.” They spread ignorance and bullshit, just like Fox”News.” And rather than correcting their phony narratives, they simply double down and pretend that any information refuting their nonsense is new rather than previously ignored. These are our presumed intellectual superiors. I don’t consume any of these people’s media products.

      • Aquagranny911

They have been after our slimy Sheriff Arpiggio for over two years. I have no doubt they will get him eventually. The mills of justice may grind slow but they do grind fine!

One thing that does piss me off so very much is that the people who whine about not prosecuting the miscreants would be also the same people crying about “drones” “due process” & “wipe my Mama’s ass” if our DOJ went in like gang busters & started arresting people.

You can’t have it both ways. If you want the rule of law then you have to follow the law as best you can. Getting the evidence that will stand up in court takes time. Dammit!

Thomson Reuters Editor Indicted on Charges of Aiding Hackers Group
    By AMY CHOZICK

Matthew Keys, a 26-year-old deputy social media editor at Thomson Reuters, has been charged with assisting the hacking collective Anonymous in an attack on the Web site of The Los Angeles Times, the Justice Department said Thursday.

A federal indictment of Mr. Keys, formerly a Web producer at KTXL Fox 40, which, like The Los Angeles Times, is owned by the Tribune Company, charges that he assisted Anonymous in a cyberattack on the newspaper’s Web site that allowed the group to gain access and alter a news feature.

The three-count indictment includes charges that in December 2010 Mr. Keys provided Anonymous with log-in information for computers that belonged to the Tribune Company. The indictment also states that he encouraged the computer hackers to log onto the Tribune Company server and make changes to the news feature published on the paper’s Web site.

If convicted, Mr. Keys, who is said to have used the hacking code name AESCracked, could face up to 10 years in prison, plus three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000 for each count, the Justice Department said in a news release.

A reason for the surge in hacker bogey man stories? New “industry” and $$$$ as “war” cash cow winds down … Hint from recent headlines: K St. ready for cybersecurity cash grab; Pentagon standing up cyberforce; DHS is thinking about setting up a “Cyber Reserve”; Commerce Department stressed that Congress needs to
pass cybersecurity legislation that incentivizes companies to boost the
security of their computer systems and networks.

The Tucson, Ariz., native blew TODAY away Tuesday morning with her absolutely delicious black bean and corn quinoa salad with garlic shrimp and avocado, a dish she recently cooked up for first lady Michelle Obama as part of the first Kids’ State Dinner.

“That was very exciting to have the first lady enjoy my food!” she told Al.

    – - – -Cooking since the age of five by helping her mother in the kitchen, Haile’s interest was piqued by watching food documentaries.

“I started asking questions about where my food comes from and what I was eating,” she told TODAY.com. She signed up for the youth advisory board of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, which aims to combat childhood obesity, and from there started working with local chefs doing cooking demonstrations.

Vick is vowing that he will not be bullied by death threats. He’s committed to continue working with community service organizations in spite of the threats.

As we reported, the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback’s book-signing tour was forced to be canceled because of those death threats, but his rep tells TMZ that Vick straight up refuses to let his haters control his life.

“Regardless of the past threats, he has millions of fans around the world and has been receiving countless messages of support. He will continue to keep an active schedule working with charities.”

Mike will continue to work with the Team Freedom Outreach (recreation and visitation programs for youth detention centers) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. We’re told Mike has security measures in place in case more threats are made and plans on giving cops a heads up before he visits the centers.

Ugh, Ted Cruz is a complete ass and Lord knows I’m not a violent person, but if someone took it upon himself to cold-clock ole Teddy “McCarthy” Cruz.

Whatever you think of DiFi, the way Cruz talked down to her like she was his “lil woman” in today’s hearing was despicable and should make any woman, no matter what your politics, pretty darn well PO’ed.

Maddow is exactly right, the go to thing for sexist pigs like Cruz when they lose an argument to a woman is to make illusions of the woman being hysterical and emotional rather than factual.

    Ugh!

BTW, DiFi totally PWNED Cruz and that’s why he went for the easy “don’t get so hysterical you emotional woman” route in response to what DiFi said.

    - — Study: Iraq War Cost U.S. $2.2 Trillion, Claimed Nearly 200,000 Lives – - – -

—- A new report by the “Costs of War” project at Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies finds that nearly 200,000 people, including soldiers and civilians, were killed in the war in Iraq President George W. Bush launched 10 years ago.

The report also found that American taxpayers will ultimately spend roughly $2.2 trillion on the war, but because the U.S. government borrowed to finance the conflict, interest payments through the year 2053 means that the total bill could reach nearly $4 trillion.– —

“Nearly every government that goes to war underestimates its duration, neglects to tally all the costs, and overestimates the political objectives that will be accomplished by war’s violence,” said Boston University professor of political science and project co-director Neta C. Crawford.

    — -Indeed, the war devastated the Iraqi health care system and allowed militants to hone their skills and export them to neighboring conflicts:

    — – –COMMENT: —-Will Kraft
Bush and Cheney should be put on trial for crimes against humanity. The whole point of that war was to make money for Haliburton and other defense contractors (and allow Bush to settle an old score with Hussein).

The Kochs and Their Corporate Arm ALEC Are Out to Destroy the Healthcare System – —

    — – - -According to the U.S. Department of Defense, a covert operation aims to fulfill its’ mission objectives without any parties knowing who sponsored or carried out the operation because they are so well-planned and executed and they conceal the identity of the sponsor with great efficiency. America has been the victim of a covert operation that began in 2009 and coincided with the country’s first African American President and the rise of racists protesting the idea that Americans deserved basic healthcare insurance.

The teabaggers’ initial mission objective was blocking debate on
healthcare reform that escalated into a campaign in early 2011 to end
the entire healthcare system of Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable
    Care Act.

In 2010, rumors the Koch brothers were behind the opposition
to healthcare reform were confirmed and now their mission objective is
overt and there is no doubt the Kochs and their corporate arm ALEC are out to end the healthcare system starting with Medicare and Medicaid. Republicans have yearned to undo New Deal provisions for 80 years, but they never openly stated their intent until this week.
