Now THIS is how you treat employees!

At Random House, Employees Will Enjoy 5,000 Shades of Green

Random House had its corporate Christmas party last night in New York and word is that Santa likes bondage. A lot.

Markus Dohle, the chief executive of Random House, promised employees — from top editors to warehouse workers — a $5,000 annual bonus to celebrate a profitable year. The cheering went on for minutes, according to people in attendance.

Call it 5,000 shades of green.

“So are you saying that, for PR purposes, that they should give in to Obama on the tax rate?” Hannity asked.

“Not exactly, I–” Coulter said, before stopping herself and saying, “Well, yeah, I guess I am.”

“You’re saying capitulate to Obama?” Hannity stammered. “We don’t have a revenue problem, Ann.”

“We lost the election, Sean!” Coulter replied.

Other right-wing pundits, such as Bill Kristol, have echoed Coulter’s argument. Kristol famously said that it wouldn’t “kill the country” if taxes on millionaires went up.

Maybe camp Clinton is getting the message.

Clinton: “Susan Rice has done a great job as our UN Ambassador”
    December 6, 2012 1:14 PM

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday offered her strongest defense yet of UN Ambassador Susan Rice, praising her as a “stalwart colleague” and noting of Rice’s Sunday talk show appearances, much criticized by Republicans, that the UN Ambassador “made very clear in her appearances that the information was subject to change as more facts were gathered.”

Obama visits middle class home to push “fiscal cliff” proposal

President Obama today visited the home of a middle class family in Falls Church, Va. – just outside Washington – where he reiterated the need for taxes to go up on the top two percent of wealthiest Americans. “We’re in the midst of the Christmas season,” he said, adding of the ongoing “fiscal cliff” talks, “I think the American people are counting on this getting solved.”

  • Eva Longoria Will Co-Chair Obama Inauguration
    By EMILY DERUY (@emily_deruy )
    Dec. 6, 2012

Actress Eva Longoria has been named a co-chair of President Barack Obama’s inauguration committee, it announced Thursday in a statement.

Longoria has been a vocal supporter of the president, serving as co-chair of his reelection campaign and speaking at the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

She also served as one of his most prominent Latino “bundlers,” financiers who contributed the maximum amount of $35,800 to the campaign and the Democratic National Committee and then collected more than $200,000 in donations from friends and acquaintances.

Longoria also spearheaded a major effort within the Obama campaign to tap into the Latino community for political donations, according to a Washington Post article released Wednesday, spearheading an effort called the Futuro Fund that contributed upward of $30 million toward Obama’s reelection.

The Meltdown Gets Ugly as Conservatives Attempt a Coup to Overthrow Boehner

The #FireBoehner hashtag really took off last night on Twitter. No, it wasn’t started by evil liberals – it was the conservatives at American Majority Action (AMA) who started it. The gang smelled blood and the sharks are circling. The Daily Caller was promoting their version of online activism to “dispose” Boehner of his speakership.

They’re mad at a “secret list” they think Boehner used to purge several “real conservatives” from House committees. Republican Reps. David Schweikert, Justin Amash and Tim Huelskamp come up often in these circles, with Freedom Works urging members to call Boehner’s office in order to instruct him to stop kicking real conservatives, such as the above three, from committees.

Republicans Turn Charter School Officials Into the New Robber Barons

    By: Hrafnkell HaraldssonNovember 25th, 2012

It is not news to anyone that the Republican Party hates public education, so much so that we can speak not only of a Republican War on Women, or a Republican War on Science, but of a Republican War on Education.

And, of course, there is always the concomitant Republican War on Government.

Our Founding Fathers wanted people educated. Schools followed westward the course of westward expansion and were as much a component of Manifest Destiny as the railroads.

The Republican Party wants to undo all that history. Everywhere we see the same push toward privatization that we see in other areas of government. Nirvi Shah, at Education Week, reported on the GOP’s plans for our education system following release of the Republican Party Platform:

The platform doesn’t see money as a solution, a happy match for Paul Ryan, whose budget called for cuts in education spending. It was big on vouchers. According to the platform, “If money were the solution, our schools would be problem-free. More money alone does not necessarily equal better performance.”

It was big on what it called “local innovations” like single-sex classes (you know, the sort they have in Kabul).

And of course, the 2012 party platform, as you would expect of a document crafted by religious conservatives, also favored the teaching of abstinence-only education.

    • Alma98

They’re all about money they don’t give a damn about our children’s education. It pisses me off to no end that they’re taking public school money for these daycare centers, cause that’s all they are.

Apple to Bring Some Manufacturing to U.S.

For the first time in years, Apple will manufacture computers in the United States, the chief executive of Apple, Timothy D. Cook, said in interviews with NBC and Bloomberg Businessweek.
“Next year, we will do one of our existing Mac lines in the United States,” he said in an interview to be broadcast Thursday on “Rock Center With Brian Williams” on NBC.
Apple, the biggest public company in the world by market value, moved its manufacturing to Asia in the late 1990s. As an icon of American technology success and innovation, the California-based company has been criticized in recent years for outsourcing jobs abroad.
“I don’t think we have a responsibility to create a certain kind of job,” Mr. Cook said in the Businessweek interview. “But I think we do have a responsibility to create jobs.”

Miranda, like you I despise the Israeli government. They are a bunch of old mean spirited people. I truly thought the President would be the one to tell them to go @##$$ themselves.

As someone said until the money stops flowing Israel will do whatever they dam well please and know they will get away with it.

    • Exactly. The leaked reports of PBO being angry with Bibi don’t mean much if nothing happens. Of course it doesn’t help matters that we have a Congress that’s in Bibi’s pocket.

      • And that’s where the people come in. If we raised our voices and remind Congress that we elected them to govern the United States, not Israel, then maybe Israel’s bs can be stopped.

        • crazycanuck

I think the problem with the USA is that the onus ALWAYS seems to be from the Palestenian side. They must denounce violence, they always have pre-conditions. They must not have nuclear weapons (knowing full well Israel has had them for dog years) These things are never told to Israel with any real conviction.

I do think the rest of the world is getting sick of this shit, but unfortunetly don’t have the money or the power to do anything.

Dem unity forces McConnell to filibuster his own proposal

Posted by Greg Sargent on December 6, 2012 at 4:55 pm

Mitch McConnell, in an effort to bluff Democrats, today demanded a straight up or down vote on a measure that would give the President the authority to raise the debt ceiling. According to Huffington Post’s Michael McAuliff, the GOP calculation was that some Dems would vote against it, proving Dem disunity on the debt ceiling.

But then the maneuver backfired, forcing McConnell to filibuster the proposal he’d previously wanted subjected to a straight vote:

The minority leader apparently did not think Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid would take him up on his offer, which would have allowed McConnell to portray President Barack Obama’s desire for such authority as something even Democrats opposed.

Reid objected at first, but told McConnell he thought it might be a good idea. After Senate staff reviewed the proposal, Reid came back to the floor and proposed a straight up-or-down vote on the idea.

McConnell was forced to say no.

    • Throw in the towel Mitch.

Starscream: “Don’t push me, Megatron, my desire for power is as great as yours!”

Megatron: “Power flows to the one who knows how. Desire alone is not enough.”

The Morning Plum: A way out of the impasse?

Posted by Greg Sargent on December 6, 2012 at 8:56 am

Here’s the GOP’s predicament right now: Conservatives won’t tolerate any action that extends just the middle class tax cuts without also extending the tax cuts for the rich. That’s because it would mean a tax hike on the top two percent, which is so intolerable that it must be opposed even if it means denying a tax cut to the other 98 percent. But Dems won’t allow Republicans to do anything other than extend just the middle class tax cuts, and will let all the tax cuts expire if necessary.

That leaves Republicans with a difficult choice. Either they agree to continue just the middle class tax cuts (a nonstarter for conservatives) or the middle class tax cuts lapse (a nonstarter for the American public for which they will be blamed).

Today, however, it looks as if top GOP aides have hit on a possible way out — a way Republicans can allow an extension of the middle class tax cuts while simultaneously opposing it. They tell the Post’s Lori Montgomery:

The Republican-controlled House could adopt two competing bills. One, supported primarily by Republicans, would extend the expiring low tax rates for all households, including the rich. The second, supported primarily by Democrats, would extend the current low rates only on income less than $250,000 a year, allowing rates for the wealthy to increase. Both measures would go to the Democratic-controlled Senate, which would then pass only the Democratic bill.

Michael Tomasky on the Ridiculousness of Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio

Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio recently laid out a vision for the GOP’s future. Too bad it shows Republicans have learned nothing at all from their historic trouncing on Election Day.

by Michael Tomasky Dec 6, 2012 4:45 AM EST

So we saw Tuesday night the unveiling of the “new” Republican Party at the Jack Kemp Foundation dinner. The two young stars spoke, Paul Ryan and Marco Rubio. Politico gave it a big write up, noting how many times Ryan mentioned the word “poverty” and how many times Rubio said “middle class.” One can see already that the media is going to hype these two and their supposed new thinking relentlessly. Is there anything to the hype? Of course not, and the reason is simple. Neither they nor the people they’re talking to are ready to accept that they’ve been wrong about anything except messaging, and until they are, this is just gaseous rhetoric

he rhetoric, I admit, they’ve got down. No 53 percenters, these two! They love everybody. The GOP, Ryan said in his speech, knows how to talk to the “risk-takers.” But unlike Mitt Romney, he sees that “there is another part of the American creed: when our neighbors are struggling, we look out for one another. We do that best through our families and communities—and our party must stand for making them stronger. We have a compassionate vision based on ideas that work—but sometimes we don’t do a good job of laying out that vision. We need to do better.”

Rubio went so far in his remarks as to mimic liberal economic belief, sounding not too unlike Barack Obama at certain moments: “The emergence of a strong, vibrant, and growing 21st-century American middle class is the answer to the most pressing challenges we face. Millions of Americans with jobs that pay more means more buyers for our products, more customers for our businesses, and more taxpayers for our governments. The more they spend, the more jobs they create for others…” And so on. You get the picture. There’s an implicit rejection of supply-side theology in there, which I doubt would have made old Mr. Kemp very happy

On both went, about education, opportunity, the working poor, student loans. Rubio even offered one or two … well, they could be called policies, or inklings of policies. But here’s what neither man came close to doing.

    • Worldwatcher7

They spoke about poverty! This should impress Tavis and Cornell.

George Zimmerman Sues NBC for Portraying Him as a ‘Racist and Predatory Villain’
By SENI TIENABESO (@seniABC) and CANDACE SMITH (@CandaceSmith_)
    Dec. 6, 2012

George Zimmerman, the man facing second-degree murder charges in one of the most racially charged and controversial cases in recent memory is seeking damages against NBC for portraying him as a “racist and predatory villain.”

The suit, filed this afternoon, claims, “NBC saw the death of Trayvon Martin not as a tragedy, but as an opportunity to increase ratings.”

[…] The suit claims the network pounced on the story in large part to help aid the ailing ratings of its morning program, “The Today Show.” It centers around “manipulated” exchanges between George Zimmerman and a non-emergency dispatcher shortly before unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin was shot and killed. The audio aired a few times on several NBC platforms beginning March 19.

The suit blames NBC in large part for the media frenzy surrounding the case and hostilities against Zimmerman.

[…] The suit also points out the role of the Rev. Al Sharpton, a commentator for MSNBC who was also organizing rallies for Trayvon Martin as he broadcast from the town where the shooting occurred, Sanford, Fla., on behalf of NBC

—- —Austerity Pushes Europe Into Its Second Recession In Four Years – —

    – – – —Continuing efforts to cut spending and reduce deficits have driven the Eurozone into its second recession in just four years, as its economy shrank for the second consecutive quarter. Struggling countries like Spain, Greece, Portugal, and Ireland are still pursuing deficit reduction to rein in their debt, cutting spending to the bone to do so. The spending cuts have driven unemployment to record levels and threatened the continent with a recession that became official during the last quarter, Bloomberg reports:

The euro-area economy was pushed into a recession for the second time in four years as trade slowed and government spending declined.

Gross domestic product in the 17-nation currency bloc slipped 0.1 percent in the third quarter from the previous three months, when it fell 0.2 percent, the European Union’s statistics office in Luxembourg said today, confirming an initial estimate published on Nov. 15.

Eurozone unemployment reached 26 percent in September. The youth unemployment rate has topped 50 percent and resulted in a “lost generation” for the continent’s young adults. Still, the pursuit of austerity continues.

    – —The 2012 White House Holiday Card – –

    — —The 2012 White House Holiday card has arrived. And this year’s card spotlights the beloved First Family’s dog, Bo.

The card was designed by Larassa Kabel, a professional artist from Des Moines, Iowa. Ms. Kabel has been creating photorealistic prints, paintings and drawings for the past 8 years and was featured as a solo artist in the Des Moines Art Center’s Iowa Artist Show in 2009, the Iowa Artist 2010 group show and many other solo and group shows in Iowa, Michigan, Texas, Florida and New York. Her work is in several private and corporate collections including Aviva, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, and the World Food Prize headquarters. She also has a much-loved dog at home, which is why she chose to feature Bo in this year’s White House Holiday card.

    — —-Obamas light Christmas tree on Ellipse – – –

—- —The first family lit the National Christmas Tree on Thursday night, keeping alive a tradition dating back 90 years.

“Merry Christmas, everybody,” President Obama said as he, first lady Michelle Obama, daughters Malia and Sasha, and grandmother Marian Robinson took the stage on the Ellipse.

Obama started to speak again as actor Neil Patrick Harris, the ceremony’s host, interrupted the president. “Mrs. Obama, Mrs. Robinson, Sasha and Malia — it’s great to see you all, happy holidays,” Harris said. “Happy holidays to you, Mr. President.”

    “Is it time?” Obama asked.

“I think it’s time,” Patrick responded.

    – —“I hope everybody is ready,” the president said, before counting down to five as daughter Sasha took the lead in flipping the switch on the 28-foot Colorado spruce planted on the National Mall this fall.

“Beautiful!” Obama said, once the tree was alight.

    — – —Temptations Singer Damon Harris Gravely Ill With Prostate Cancer – —

    – — —Legendary Temptations member Damon Harris (pictured), whose falsetto voice was on the 1972 chart-topper “Papa Was a Rolling Stone,” is reportedly gravely ill with prostate cancer, according to The Sentinel.

Harris, whose battle with the disease began in 1999 when he was 47 years old after unknowingly having it for five years, now spends most of his days going through chemotherapy, which he receives at Baltimore’s Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The man whom Michael Jackson nicknamed “The Voice” admits that his time on earth is limited and revealed to The Sentinel, “Look, cancer is what it is. I know my time is now very short, and I’m just thankful to have God and to be able to somehow have the care that I have,” said the now-62-year-old performer.

Harris, who was a die-hard Temptations fan, was 20 years old when he joined the iconic singing group back in 1971. With a falsetto voice that was a spot-on match for Eddie Kendricks, who had left the group earlier, a friend convinced Harris to audition for the group members who were a decade or so older than him. Harris’ actual first name is Otis, but he was forced to change it when he was hired as a Temptation because the group already had an Otis, leader Otis Williams.

NOW: – – –Less than an hour after South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint announced Thursday he was retiring in January to take the reins of the conservative think-tank The Heritage Foundation, speculation was already rampant about who Governor Nikki Haley would appoint to replace the Tea Party champion.

Among many conservatives, one candidate stood out as a common sense replacement: South Carolina Congressman Tim Scott.

Scott would be the first African American from the south since Mississippi Republican Senator Blanche Bruce lost reelection in 1881, and the first Republican black Senator since Edward Brooke in the 1970s.

Conservative commentator Erick Erickson told BuzzFeed, “I think Tim Scott would be a great addition to the Senate from South Carolina in that he is not part of the South Carolina Republican establishment in the way some of the other choices are and he is trusted by fiscal conservatives and the GOP establishment both.”

Erickson added that Scott “as the choice would also allow conservatives to focus on beating Lindsey Graham in 2014.”

Tonight on the Lawrence O’Donell show presented yet another one of those now ubiquitous opportunities to once again peek into the mindset of the entitled, all-knowing, self-proclaimed “progressive” white woman crowd as embodied by Anne Marie Cox – yes she of the “liberals” who love John McCain and who for so long shilled endlessly on McCain’s behalf as his unofficial spokesperson on MSNBC -even as she demeaned and dismissed the actual liberal nominee and eventual President Barack Obama.

Tonight Lawrence O’Donell discusses a poll showing Michelle Obama winning the Senate by double digits over the incumbent in her home state of Illinois – a showing so much more impressive than her predecessor Hillary Clinton ever polled at the same point in her husband’s tenure-

Cue an obviously irritated and condescending Anne Marie Cox who quickly dismisses Mrs Obama offhand – rambling on about how annoying it is that most women in Congress get there riding their husbands coattails – many directly inheriting their dead husband’s congressional seat etc. etc. Michelle would be just another one of those woman who gets into the Senate that way – and Anne Marie Cox strongly disapproves.

Not said out loud is if Ms. Cox’s “disapproval” is limited only to the idea of “women” sneaking into Congress courtesy of their husband’s coattails –or just that Ms. Cox disapproves of Michelle Obama specifically – as a candidate and/or as a woman/person.

But we can safely assume the answer to that as Anne Marie Cox’s facial expressions and choice of words betrays much, as she with impossible to miss and palpable disdain, discusses Mrs Obama.

    Pretty much says it all.

It is important to note that Anne Marie Cox never once acknowledged Mrs Obama by name— it was a dismissive “she”.

But even more noteworthy, in Anne Marie Cox’s entire clinical dissertation, nary a compliment, or even the slightest acknowledgement of Michelle Obama as a capable human being in her own right, little less a formidable and central figure in her husband’s unlikely ascent to the highest office of the land – TWICE!

Or an influential and popular First Lady and international figure and role model in her own right.

No, according to Anne Marier Cox, Michelle Obama is just another one of those many bored undeserving housewives “riding her husband’s coattails” to office.

But then Ms. Cox’s eyes light up and she immediately comes to life as the conversation shifts to a similar poll showing Hillary Clinton polling decently for a presidential run.

Cue an excited and animated Anne Marie Cox who effusively waxes on positively and breathlessly about Hillary – their “golden girl” and their “gold standard” – as she asserts she and her friends call her.

Hillary is A+ insists Anne Marie Cox and can and will run in her own right “just as Hillary”.

This chick like so many in her crowd, completely lacks any self-awareness. LOL.

Her small bitter, hateful, petty, spiteful, short-sighted entitled, racist mind has been so engulfed, her own hypocrisy and double standards are entirely lost on her.

Even though I strongly suspect it still wouldn’t matter if she were confronted with it — Anne Marie Cox is after all in her own mind, a part of that select, superior group — the chosen ones who also get to decide, pick and choose who rates and who doesn’t —– the white girls club — the “gold standard” – the “A+” folks.

And Mrs Obama can be as whipsmart, effective, accomplished as only few can be–

But she’ll never belong to or ever rate with Anne Marie Cox and her “superior” all-knowing, all-deciding club who’ve appointed themselves the gatekeepers and the final word on all things women and “gold standard”.

I would challenge Anne Marie Cox to try to put her own categorical assertions and theory to test by backing any woman for national office while publicly assailing, demeaning or attempting to marginalize Mrs Obama–

She’ll quickly discover who the true gold standard really is.

    • rikyrah

      bless you Camille.

      bless you.

Late response but, All of this Camille!!!!

I caught that segment on the replay of LOD’s show and let me tell you I was cursing at the TV like a drunken sailor! She was so smug and dismissive of any talk of Mrs. Obama being in politics. Bitch please! If Mrs. Obama decided to go that route I have no doubt that she would be a success.

When LOD mentioned St. Hillary I swear she had an orgasm. Hillary rolled into her Senate seat on the coattails of her husband and this empathy/sympathy that the Anna Marie Coxes of the world feel for her being the wife of an adulterer. Anybody that thinks she was elected based only on her skill and experience is naive. IMO if President Obama had not given her the SOS position, she would be just another defeated candidate toiling away in the Senate, making the rounds on these shows 2nd guessing President Obama’s every move.

The more they prop up and push Hillary the more I know that if she runs and wins the nomination I am going to have a very serious decision to make about my vote in 2016.

    • Aquagranny911

Late to the party but I have to add my 2 pesos…

      Excellent, stellar comment, Camille!

I really really hope that Hillary retires & does not try to run in 2016. I feel I couldn’t vote for her but I can’t vote for a Repub or 3rd party either. I wish the Clintons & Co would just GO AWAY already!

And Annemarie Cox is a smug, self-important, poisonous little Bee imo.
