    Bogus poll alert:

NBC and WSJ Use Poll To Push For Grand Bargain

    excerpt:
After looking at the demographic breakdown and the way the questions are framed, I understand how they reached the conclusion they did. It’s one thing to poll around a person and/or candidate, and other to poll around issues. The poll is heavily weighted toward white voters, with almost no Hispanic or African-Americans, and the questions around the tax rates and sequester are phrased in a way that people wouldn’t necessarily equate to “expiration of the Bush tax rates” or agreement on the budget issues.

EXCLUSIVE: Susan Rice drops out of running for secretary of state; Saddened by partisan politics
    Thu Dec 13, 2012 3:42 PM EST

    By Tracy Connor, NBC News

Embattled U.N. envoy Susan Rice is dropping out of the running to be the next secretary of state after months of criticism over her Benghazi comments, she told NBC News on Thursday.

“If nominated, I am now convinced that the confirmation process would be lengthy, disruptive and costly – to you and to our most pressing national and international priorities,” Rice wrote in a letter to President Obama, saying she’s saddened by the partisan politics surrounding her prospects.

“That trade-off is simply not worth it to our country…Therefore, I respectfully request that you no longer consider my candidacy at this time,” she wrote in the letter obtained by NBC News.

Brian Williams will have an exclusive interview with Rice on tonight’s “Rock Center With Brian Williams” at 10p/9c.

Wow. They got their scalp; and of course Hillary escapes with NO ONE saying BOO about her.

But wait, her time will come.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Now the State Dept is saying that she might not testify. Now we know why.

        • Rhoda

She knows Republicans are going to try hard to resurrect this story and tie it to her too; now that everyone knows she’s looking to 2016.

          • aleth

If anything her not testifying is a clear indication of 2016.

IMO, Karma for the Clintons is long over due & Hillary is a pure fool if she tries to run for Prez in 2016.

I said then & believe now that Pres Obama should have defied her critics and appointed @AmbassadorRice to the post & dared them to deny her!

      • Rhoda

Little punk: were was he before? Why didn’t he write op-eds and start throwing back the shade that was flung Susan Rice’s way? The DEMS stayed silent on her because IMO the Clintons don’t want a woman to follow Hillary at State; I really hope that POTUS nominates Susan Powers or another woman. Because THAT is the heart of the issue for the Clintonistas who fanned the flames even AFTER POTUS came out to support Ambassador Rice.

God is good. Whomever was behind the tear down of Susan Rice; I have no doubt they will get it back in spades.

She gave them what they wanted. Sad. In a while, maybe I’ll understand. Not now. So, this week in the news we have Rhonda Lee fired for being her beautiful, intelligent self; remains of dead black boys unearthed; ninjas defending Ms. Beckys but not Ms. Khadijas; and other ninjas always on the pounce for PBO for just any ole’ thing. This is today’s black America. Sigh ! I’m going back to creating- much less stress on the psyche.

      • Daltex82

        It is sad indeed.

    • TyrenM

I hadn’t thought of Powers (Rhoda.) I just hope he doesn’t go immediately to Kerry. As stated here, he got with the program rather late in the game.

      • aleth

Sorry on Kerry I will be horrible —- not doing it.. He should not be SOS.. I don’t care what the left wants

        • Rhoda

ITD. I don’t want Kerry in the chair b/c I don’t want Scott Brown back in the senate, lol. But Kerry has done a lot of good work for POTUS, was an outstanding surrogate, and a great debater to work against. I have a lot of respect for him and know how much he really wants the position. I don’t have a problem with him; I just wanted Dr. Rice in the chair after all those people tried to take her down over shit she didn’t even do!

I also want a woman mostly to fuck the Clintonistas who I think enjoy this and have had an issue w/Dr. Rice ever since POTUS made her a Cabinet Sec. accountable only to him and not Sec. Clinton.

          • goldenstar

Hmmmmm. I never ever thought about that line of report. You are so observant. I was just listening to Martin Bashir and there was discussion how Hilary didn’t lift a finger because of Rice’s critique of her candidacy and her bona fides being a wife of a President.

          • aleth

I hear you but I don’t want him there– stay in congress.

I also want a woman– Clinton has no legacy to protect point blank she was on the wrong side of every decision made by the President. A woman to that position period, a black qualified woman.

I wonder if a petition can be started on the White House website to show support for Susan Rice? Maybe it won’t change anything but it will be a way to show PBO that a majority of people are behind her nomination. Just a thought…

  • Miranda

Watch the emoprogs and Professional Left act ten times worse than the right wing nuts. Just watch.

    • Rhoda

Fuck them. They have no seat at the table. They have no respect. Labor learned this lesson the hard way after 2010; and that’s why they went all in for POTUS. They recognize the emoprogs and netroots have NO BASE of support in the country and couldn’t get Joe Liebermann’s scalp in a solid blue state. They can’t do that; they can do NOTHING. They spent the first four years jealous of POTUS building his own digital infrastructure and will spend the next four on his jock begging him to give them access to the OFA database and web tools.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

You should see them on Twitter. It’s ridiculous how they’re putting the blame on PBO when they need to be calling out McCain, Graham, Ayotte and the media. Even some folks who I thought were sane PBO supporters are going Emo.

      • QOakaJP

Ironically, a lot of them had already decided that they wouldn’t support Rice for SOS anyway. To hawkish, too corporate too wealthy, etc. SO now thatt they won’t be able to complain through a drawn out guessing game and eventual confirmation process, they fall back on plan B: Obama “caved”. To who or what, they couldn’t tell you.

These emoprogressives don’t seem to understand that this isn’t 2009.

Barack Obama won the crown: he has his second term. He won with a mandate that even a poll pushed as hard as the NBC/WSJ one can not deny. He has the best campaign organization EVER created and EVERY democrat wants in on that action. He has a network of donors that took on Wall Street and WON.

Barack Obama owns the Democratic party.

He is walking like a winner. He is talking like a winner. He is swinging his mother fucking dick every which way; which is why the village is in vapors.

This is the Mr. Tibbs portion of the Presidency: he doesn’t need shit for anyone, he’s playing for his legacy. Fortunately for his enemies, he’s a decent person who doesn’t need to drink the tears of his enemies to be satisfied with his lot in life. He is kicking ass right now and will be for the next four years; so she can go sit down with that mess.

Lawmakers In Three States Introduce Legislation To Expand Voting Rights

In the last week, lawmakers in states ranging from Florida to Virginia to New Jersey pre-filed bills to help Americans access the ballot box and ensure that citizens aren’t disenfranchised.[....]

FLORIDA: HB 25 to ease restrictions on registration groups.[....]
NEW JERSEY: AB 3553 to establish early voting.[....]
VIRGINIA: HB 1361 to allow anyone to vote absentee.[....]
VIRGINIA: HB 1361 to allow anyone to vote absentee. [....]

In addition, after some Floridians were forced to wait in line more than six hours to vote, officials in Miami-Dade County sent a request to the Florida state legislature this week to extend the early voting period in populous counties.

NJ already has no-excuse absentee voting, which is a sort of early voting. But it would be great if they go all in. While Christie is an ALEC darling, the legislature has a solid Dem majority so the bill could have a real shot.

Oops: Michigan Republicans Have Passed a Right to Work Law that may be Impossible to Implement

[....] Just as the Wisconsin law violated their state constitution, so it appears the Michigan law does the same, albeit for different reasons. In addition to the violation of the state constitution, just as in Wisconsin, we also have a lawsuit filed over the violation of the Michigan Open Meetings law. But to the constitutional issue…

Michigan Senate Democrats report, “The Michigan Constitution gives clear authority to the Civil Service Commission over conditions of employment for the state’s workforce. Experts have suggested today only a vote of the Civil Service Commission could enact Right to Work policies for state workers.”

Controversial “right-to-work” legislation covering public-sector employees passed the Michigan House of Representatives on Tuesday, bringing it one step closer to being signed into law.[....]

The House is now scheduled to vote on a right-to-work bill for private-sector employees, which would cover Michigan’s auto industry. If that measure passes, Michigan would become the 24th right-to-work state, meaning unions cannot require members to pay dues as a condition of employment.[....]

    • Aquagranny911

  • Rhoda

    Sepia: This is amazing.

“After the ARB reports to the Secretary, then she will have consultations with Congress in terms of the conclusions that she draws about how we need to go forward from there,” Nuland said. “I don’t have any dates to announce until we have firm dates on when the ARB is coming forward.”

The Cable asked Nuland if the State Department will share the ARB with Congress at all. Nuland responded that they may not decide to give the actual report to Congress.

“The ARB’s responsibility is to brief the secretary. The secretary has said she will be transparent to Congress,” Nuland said. “What is required, Josh, is that the secretary’s response to the ARB’s conclusions has to go to Congress within 90 days of her receiving the report.”

So, she may not even show Congress the independent report that was commissioned? Seriously? That is going to fly, how?

IMO, it was Sec. Clinton’s job to fight for her staff’s security and it seems clear she deferred to Gen. Petreaus in the way security was set up given the CIA’s involvement. I bet there are a lot of questions along those lines she doesn’t want to have to deal with in any respect; and now Susan Rice is gone to distract from Hillary’s role in the matter.

    • creolechild

Yup, Hillary’s letting Susan Rice take all the heat. Oh, look who’s running interference! Politics makes for some strange bedfellows does it not? Here’s some additional information from the article that you posted:

Congress expects Clinton to testify Dec. 20 about the results of the Accountability Review Board, State’s internal review on the events leading up to and during the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. mission in Benghazi.[....] But the State Department said today that the work of the ARB, led by Tom Pickering and Adm. Mike Mullen, isn’t complete yet and so Clinton might not show up to testify next week at all.

“We ask our diplomats and development personnel to operate in some of the most dangerous places on the planet,” Sen. John Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee said in a statement today announcing the hearing. “We owe it to them, and we owe it to the memory of Ambassador Chris Stevens and his three fellow Americans who lost their lives in Benghazi to get past the politics and focus on the substance of what happened and what it tells us about diplomatic security going forward.”[....]

Clinton has not agreed to testify in open hearing at all in fact, only to brief the House and Senate foreign relations committees on how she interprets the ARB report, whenever it surfaces.[....]

I’m starting to side-eye Kerry after reading this:

Back on Nov. 28, “OnEarth,” published by the Natural Resources Defense Council, dug into U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice’s financial disclosures and found that she and her husband have a stake in TransCanada, the company pushing for the Keystone XL Pipeline to be built.

NRDC officials say it’s an important issue that must be discussed during the nomination process. But the timing of the report raises questions, as it is being surfaced by an environmental activist community that has previously given support to another potential secretary of state candidate – Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry.

      • creolechild

Exactly! The Clintons and McCain are “friends.” I also read an article yesterday about Hillary’s interview with Barbara Walters. Check out her response when asked if she was thinking about running in 2016: “I’ve said I really don’t believe that that’s something I will do again.”

What the hell does that mean? Just say yes or no! And Bubba’s surfacing, yet again, to talk about how “wrong” he was about the drug wars….all this time has passed and NOW he comes out with this? To what end?

Public transit use is up — again!

[....] With seven consecutive quarters of ridership increases, it’s obvious that public demand for public transit is growing,” said APTA President and CEO Michael Melaniphy. “As Congress works to resolve our country’s deficit problem, it also needs to work to resolve the transportation deficit. Otherwise public transit and highway funding will be facing an annual $15 billion shortfall in the next 10 years.”

APTA broke their findings down by location and type of transportation, some of which were bigger winners than others.

Heavy rail enjoyed a 3.6 percent increase in ridership: 10.8% Cleveland, 7.41% Bay Area, 4.6% Chicago

Light rail increases (4.2 percent!) were due at least in part to system improvements and expansions: 33.7% Memphis, 19.7% Salt Lake City, 13.7% L.A.

Commuter rail saw a 2.4 percent increase in ridership: 15.6% Austin, 12.3% Bay Area, 10.2% Seattle

And poor, wonderful, much-maligned buses got a 1.8 percent bump: 8.6% St. Louis, 5.3% Arlington Heights, 5.2% Newark.

Connecticut Auction Cuts Clean Energy Costs — and Offers a Greener Path for the Country

Connecticut has driven down the costs that customers will incur for their public utilities’ clean-energy purchases through an innovative reverse auction. The newly-launched program is the first of its kind, but there’s a congressional proposal with language directing the Energy Department to set up reverse, renewable-energy auctions on a nationwide basis.

The legislation has languished in the current Congress, but it will be back — and its sponsor can now point to the promising outcome in Connecticut, where Democratic Gov. Dannel Malloy has led a charge for “cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable” electricity.[....]

    – —South Africa president Jacob Zuma: Nelson Mandela ‘recuperating’

    – – —South African President Jacob Zuma on Thursday honored anti-apartheid icon Nelson Mandela, who has been hospitalized since the weekend to recover from a lung infection.

Zuma unveiled a statue of Mandela in the city of Bloemfontein, also called Mangaung, which next week hosts the ruling African National Congress party’s convention.

“We will be able to yet again pay tribute to a man who became a symbol of both our struggle for freedom and the free and democratic South Africa,” Zuma said.

Mandela, 94, was admitted on Saturday to 1 Military Hospital in Pretoria, the capital.

“As we meet, Madiba is recuperating from a lung infection at a Pretoria hospital,” Zuma said, using Mandela’s clan name, often used here as a sign of affection. “We wish him a speedy recovery and assure him yet again of the love and support of many in the country and abroad.”

Zuma made the remarks while dedicating an airport in the name of Bram Fischer, a white South African who was also a key figure in the struggle against apartheid, the system of racist white rule which collapsed in the 1994 elections which made Mandela the nation’s first black president. Fischer was a leader of the South African Communist Party and a lawyer who defended Mandela at trial.

Millionaires And Billionaires: ‘Raise The Estate Tax!’

Despite Republican claims that higher taxes will be the death of us all, a group of the nation’s millionaires and billionaires is petitioning Congress to raise the estate tax even higher than the rate President Obama is targeting.[....]

The estate tax was reduced dramatically between 2002 and 2009 as part of the Bush tax cuts, and eliminated altogether, briefly, in 2010. As of last year it stood with a top rate of 35 percent, but exempted the first $5 million in assets, an even better deal than the 2009 rates. Responsible Wealth is calling for the rate to go up to 45 percent with the first $2 million in assets exempted, as compared to President Obama’s proposed $3.5 million exemption cut-off. According to the number crunchers at the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, that change would raise an estimated $276 billion by 2020.[....]

LOL! Whatever helps you get to sleep at night, Mitch…

McConnell suggests Obama ‘manufactured’ poll to make him ‘most unpopular’ senator

A recent fundraising email from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell’s campaign suggested that President Barack Obama ordered the firm Public Policy Polling (PPP) to “manufacture” a survey that said the Kentucky Republican was the “most unpopular Senator in the country.”

A poll released by the left-leaning firm on Tuesday indicated that only 37 percent of Kentucky voters approved of McConnell. “Both in terms of raw disapproval (55%) and net approval (-18) McConnell has the worst numbers of any of his peers, taking that mantle from Nebraska’s Ben Nelson,” PPP wrote.

Speaking of Scandal, a little food for thought about the Hemings/Jefferson and Olivia/Fitz comparison: http://www.racialicious.com/2012/12/13/table-for-two-scandals-brush-with-history/

P.S. I haven’t been this excited about Thursday night tv since The Cosby Show era! Thank you, Shonda!

      • JojoRaze

I’ve never watched Scandal–I really haven’t–but have heard about the controversy and follow the recaps from AwesomelyLuvvie.

This racialicious piece was very intriguing and thoughtfully argued wrt to Olivia/Fitz being Hemmings/Jefferson. However, I think even if Fitz had a white mistress, he’d still be as overbearing on her. He’s a president–a powerful man who thinks he can get whatever he wants–so that’s part of the asymmetric nature of the relationship with someone who is a fixer, yes, but an aide and a subordinate.

    Stumbling, Bumbling John Boehner

    by BooMan
Thu Dec 13th, 2012 at 04:15:12 PM EST

We can pore over the tea leaves to try to determine what John Boehner is trying to accomplish, and why. But I think it is pointless. The simplest explanation is usually the best. John Boehner is not very good at his job. He doesn’t know what he is doing, or why. Stick with that hypothesis and you are unlikely to go wrong. The man is stumbling drunk before dinnertime every single day of the week. When the president tries to call him at night, he doesn’t come to the phone. That’s probably because he is passed out.

He doesn’t have the ability to lay out a budget plan as a counteroffer to the president because he doesn’t have a clue how the budget works, and neither does his staff. He’s a fraud and a buffoon. He can’t even figure out how to cave in. He’s just paralyzed. We’re going over the cliff because he can’t even come close to pulling his shit together to make an offer that Obama would accept and that would also be acceptable to his caucus

    Article about Susan Rice.
    http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2012/08/13/the_point_guard?page=0,3
[With the exception of Syria, she has won every major battle she has fought at the U.N., not just Iran and Libya, but resolutions imposing sanctions on North Korea, sending a robust peacekeeping force into Ivory Coast when it was torn by post-election conflict, and warding off, at least for the moment, a full-scale war between Sudan and the breakaway state of South Sudan. National Security Council senior staffer Samantha Power, a baseball fan, compares her to Mariano Rivera, the Yankee great who turns every close game into a win. When I told Rhodes that I had heard he was one of the early skeptics of Rice, he put me right. "I would walk through fire for Susan Rice," he said. "She may not be cuddly, but she's incredibly faithful and loyal and passionate on behalf of her friends and the people she's been through fights with."
Susan Rice is not to be denied. She has never faltered along the steep upward trajectory of her career. Some high-powered women have dropped out of the
administration to tend to their families, and Rice says she is sympathetic to their plight; she just doesn't share it. At one point I asked Rice whether she had ever experienced a serious failure. She thought about it. No, she hadn't. "Some have tried to take me on," she murmured. Presumably, they lived to regret it.]

This woman has gotten where she is not because of who her husband is, but from her OWN skills set, hard work and brilliant mind.

      • qosine

He did elevate SBA and talked about consolidating agencies into a Dept. of Business. You never know what other restructuring might take place.

        I’m just musing here.
I just believe PBO has great plans for her.

And personally, I just really like her.

        • Ebogan63

Because PBO is Michael Corleone! And foolz betta recognize!

          • JojoRaze

I hope he nominates Samantha Powers of “A Problem from Hell” fame just to mess with the backstabbers in the Senate. It’ll be like “So, you want a white person for the job? How about the woman who called Hillary a monster in 2008?” She’s qualified and the shade will be subtle but loud.

I don’t hate Sen Kerry in his role in this situation because he’s been done dirty and he is qualified; and he was a great surrogate and supporter of PBO in the election. However, Hillary has been horrible in this. She could have shut this mess done from jump and did nothing to stop it until Clyburn must have said something to her.

No one would have begrudged her running or even brought up Susan Rice during her run; we’d be so happy she’s finally getting a chance. But, this situ is so blatantly racist and power seeking that it has turned me off from Billary more than ever. And, I haven’t trusted those two since 2008.

    – — — — A former Tuskegee Airman who became a prominent local African-American entrepreneur was honored today by town residents and local civic leaders during a street naming ceremony held in Jersey City this afternoon.

Roughly a hundred people gathered at the southeastern corner of Ocean Avenue and Dwight Street around 12 p.m. to celebrate the achievements of James “Zimp” Smith, the first successful African-American businessman to own his own franchise in Hudson County during an era when minority owned businesses were rare.

–With the 88-year-old war hero and local icon in attendance, the corner was officially renamed James “Zimp” Smith Way to remember Smith’s contribution to the community, said Council Woman-at-Large Viola Richardson while addressing the audience during the one-hour ceremony.

Prior to his success, Smith served in the Air Corp in the Philippines during World War II. Although he was a Tuskegee Airman, he did not serve as a pilot.

“He helped many people and served the community greatly through all the businesses he started and jobs he created,” said Garret Smith, former Mayor of Roselle and Smith’s son, minutes before the ceremony began.

Some days I really do love my Peeps.

I just read this comment on another blog….

“What they are doing to Ambassador Rice reminds me of what they did to Justice Sotomayor. Latinos did not forget. We will not forget Susan Rice, another good and wise woman who is being smeared.”

I’m thinking that Repugnants & the PL shilling for the Clintons will pay dearly for this one.

    • qosine

But the Repugnants and the PL hate the Clintons. They just want to hurt PBO and his admin. Gingrich can’t stand he never brought down Bill. JMHO

      • Aquagranny911

Agree that Repugnants & Ginrich ilk hate Clintons but they are so not above manipulating the Clintonistas for their own gain. And I don’t think the PL really hate the Clintons. A lot of them were in love with Hillary when PBO was besting her for 2008. Too many are closet racists & PBO haters.

All this BS about Dr Rice involved with investments in the pipeline came straight from the PL & was all over their blogs.

I trust none of these in this case. There seems much behind the scenes caca. I have always believed that both the Clintons would sleep with the devil if it gave them one iota of power or influence.

The real point of my post was that I think some Latinos are as outraged as many here about the treatment of Susan Rice & they will remember when the time comes to vote. This gives me heart because we all need to stand together with our Prez & Dems.

        • qosine

Yep. We gotta all stand together with the Prez & Dems.

I’ve just been trying to sort it out. I know Kos et al were in the tank for Edwards, so maybe they switched over to H. Clinton instead of PBO in 08.

I can see Repukes with a Hillary Nomination…From Vince Foster to HCR that didn’t work to her last 4 years. If she was to somehow get nominated, I don’t see her winning in ’16 at all. She needs to really ride on out and collect that CGI money. Ugh.

          • morphus

Wonder how the Repukes will override Hillary’s “new” badge of invincibility? According to WaPo: Hillary: The new Teflon Clinton:

Hillary Clinton has become politically untouchable … [Hillary] .. made a political name for himself by weathering (and prospering) in circumstances that would have felled most ordinary politicians has now become the Teflon public figure in the family.

          • TyrenM

By Jove, I think you’ve got it, lamh36!!! That defense just really did it for me. It’s high time to separate the wheat from the fucking chaff:Either you support the President or not. No fucking excuses!

Even Smartypants calls bs on BWD:Smartypants ‏@Smartypants32
@TheObamaDiary What I read was “white paternalism” – a given if you’re white. We need to be able to talk about that.

    – —How The Media Have Failed To Explain Negative Effects Of ‘Fiscal Cliff’ Spending Cut – —

    – — -A lot of ink and airtime have been spent on the ongoing negotiations over the so-called “fiscal cliff,” the tax increases and spending cuts scheduled to take place at the end of the year. However, according to a Media Matters report, media outlets have been much more focused on the potential economic damage of the former than the latter:

Of all segments, 130 discussed the negative effects of tax increases, compared to only 50 that mentioned effects of spending cuts. Forty-two total segments mentioned only the effects of increasing taxes on the wealthy, with the bulk of these segments — 23 segments — being on Fox News. The effect of taxes on the wealthy outperforms other issues when discussed in isolation — 24 segments discussed only the effects of general tax increases, while only 13 total segments mentioned the effects of spending cuts in isolation.

    – – – –SNIP – – –
    – – – -According to the Economic Policy Institute, the spending cuts that would go into effect should the U.S. go over the fiscal cliff will actually be more detrimental to economic growth and job creation than the tax increases.
