Thursday Afternoon Thread: Soulsville USA – Stax Records

Wattstax Picture Logo

On August 20, 1972, the Stax label presented a major concert, Wattstax, featured performances by Stax recording artists and humor from rising young comedian Richard Pryor. Known as the “Black Woodstock,” Wattstax was hosted by Reverend Jesse Jackson and drew a crowd of over 100,000 people, most of them African-American. Wattstax was filmed by motion picture director Mel Stuart (Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory), and a concert film of the event was released to theaters by Columbia Pictures in February 1973.

This right here as one commenter said “was the moment ‘cool’ was born”.

Isaac Hayes – Live at Wattstax (1972)

Despite the success of Wattstax, the future of Stax was unstable. In 1972, Bell bought out Stewart’s remaining interest in the company, and established a distribution deal with CBS Records. CBS Records President Clive Davis saw Stax as a means for CBS to fully break into the African-American market and successfully compete with Motown. Bell had originally proposed that CBS buy 50% of the company, but Davis discussed it with CBS’s corporate attorneys, who saw anti-trust problems, so a national distribution deal was worked out instead. However, Davis was fired by the company shortly after signing the Stax distribution deal. Without Davis at the helm, CBS very quickly lost interest in Stax.

The Stax labels’ profits were cut severely, particularly since the CBS distribution agents bypassed the traditional small mom-and-pop record sellers in the black community which had been the backbone of Stax’s distribution, and weren’t pushing the Stax product to the larger retailers for fear of undercutting rack space for CBS R&B artists. Reports came in to Stax of stores in cities such as Chicago and Detroit being unable to get new Stax records despite consumer demands, and the company attempted to annul its distribution deal with CBS. However, although CBS was uninterested in fully promoting Stax, it refused to release the label from its contract, for fear that Stax would land a more productive deal with another company and then become CBS’s direct competitor.

National Security Brief: Poll Finds Military Turning Away From GOP
By ThinkProgress on Mar 26, 2013 at 8:55 am

The latest annual poll conducted by the Military Times has found that nearly one-third of U.S. military personnel identified themselves as Republicans, down from almost 50 percent in 2006, the Washington Times reported.

One soldier attributed the numbers to the Tea Party. “It may have to do with the rise of the Tea Party movement,” said a Marine lieutenant colonel who described himself as conservative.

“Republicans kind of used to be seen as the party that took care of the military,” said one Army sergeant first class. “But recently, there’s a feeling that that has kind of shifted, and I don’t think people feel that the party is really looking out for the military the way it used to.”

Bloomberg Seeks End to Cheap Cigarettes
By VIVIAN YEE Published: March 26, 2013

Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg opened a new front in his antismoking campaign last week when he proposed new legislation that would require stores to keep tobacco products out of sight, making New York the first city in the nation to do so.

…New York’s price-regulation bill would, in effect, close off the
remaining means of access to cheap cigarettes and little cigars, which
make it easier for teenagers to experiment with smoking, and progress to
smoking regularly, said Brett Loomis, a researcher at RTI International, a nonprofit institute that offers research and technical services to governments and businesses.

    – —Anti-Gay Base is Feeling Isolated– –

    – —Conservatives spent much of their time at the recent Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) bashing political consultants. Perhaps they knew something we didn’t. In today’s Politico, Alexander Burns reportsthat the majority of the Republican consulting class is not-so-secretly hoping that the Supreme Court will the issue the broadest possible rulings in favor of gay marriage. Here’s a sample:

—- — – “It removes the issue from the Democratic playbook of
fundraising scare tactics and political demagoguery and breaks their
usual messaging dynamic of, ‘You’re a beleaguered minority; let us
protect you from the evil GOP — oh, and here’s your absentee ballot,’”
said Florida-based Republican consultant Rick Wilson.

    – —-Wilson continued: “Democrats won’t be as happy explaining to gay
business owners why Obamacare is crushing them; why the regulatory
behemoth in D.C. is burying them in red tape; and why the American
economy is still faltering. Republicans take an issue out of the federal
domain and let states, churches and society handle it, and let’s stick
to a message of growth and opportunity for every American.”

One top Republican pollster, who requested anonymity in order to speak bluntly, said that Republicans will struggle to connect with many swing voters as long as they’re perceived as the party of cultural retrenchment.

THIS – ->“We can’t continue to fight a losing battle on gay marriage and gay rights, and if we need the Supreme Court to help in that regard, so be it,” the pollster said…

Top donors threaten Dems: Do the right thing on guns, or no more money

Posted by Greg Sargent on March 28, 2013 at 12:54 pm

With red state Democratic Senators remaining skittish about embracing Obama’s gun proposals, at least two top Democratic donors are stepping forward and vowing to withhold any and all future financial contributions from any Democrats who don’t support the centerpiece of Obama’s plan: Expanded background checks.

Kenneth Lerer, a New York businessman who is chairman of Buzzfeed.com, and David Bohnett, a technology entrepreneur and philanthopist based in Los Angeles, are both major financial supporters of Democratic candidates, having each given scores of large contributions over the years. They are both key players in the political fundraising world and wield influence among other donors and fundraisers.

Neither will give another dime to any Senate Democrat who does not support expanded background checks, I’m told — and both will suggest to other donors that they do the same. The move underscores the rising importance of gun control as an issue in Democratic politics — and the rising frustration in some Democratic circles with elected officials who continue to regard gun politics as a third rail, at a moment that presents a real opportunity to achieve serious reform, with a policy that enjoys near universal public support.

GOP senators fear a debate on gun legislation

    By Steve Benen
    Thu Mar 28, 2013 2:13 PM EDT

When President Obama delivered his State of the Union address last month, he urged lawmakers to simply give a bill a fair hearing. Referencing parents of Newtown victims, the president said, “They deserve a vote. Gabby Giffords deserves a vote. The families of Newtown deserve a vote. The families of Aurora deserve a vote. The families of Oak Creek and Tucson and Blacksburg, and the countless other communities ripped open by gun violence — they deserve a simple vote.”

And right now, Senate Republicans’ top goal on gun legislation seems to be making sure that doesn’t happen.

Sen. Mike Lee (R) of Utah argued today that he intends to block a floor debate on gun legislation in order to ensure a “full debate.” I don’t mean to be picky, but that’s gibberish — one does not guarantee a debate by blocking a debate.

Nevertheless, Lee’s efforts are drawing more support from the far-right. We talked the other day about a trio of conservative Republican senators — Lee, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz — who’ve vowed to filibuster any legislation that changes any gun laws in any way. Their little group is apparently growing.

Just so we’re clear, what these five senators are saying is they intend to filibuster the motion to proceed on any gun bill. In other words, they’re not only going to try to prevent legislation from passing, they also intend to block any bill related to gun violence from even being debated on the Senate floor.

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama House leader says a black lawmaker will not face punishment for referring in an email to a white constituent’s ancestors as incestuous slave owners.

Republican House Speaker Mike Hubbard said Thursday that neither he nor most other legislators share the views that Democratic Rep. Joseph Mitchell of Mobile expressed in the email to a Jefferson County man. But Hubbard said Mitchell has free speech rights.

Mitchell, who is black, sent an email to the man referring to the man’s “slave-holding, murdering, adulterous, baby-raping, incestuous … kin folk.” The man had emailed Mitchell and other lawmakers asking them not to pass gun control laws.

New Hampshire House Votes to Repeal Stand Your Ground

By a slim five-vote margin, New Hampshire’s House of Representatives yesterday passed a billto repeal the state’s Stand Your Ground law, the controversial self-defense statute that essentially allows anyone who feels threatened by someone else to shoot first rather than retreat.

No one in New Hampshire has claimed Stand Your Ground as a legal defense since the law was enacted in 2011. The proposed repeal will likely face an even tougher fight in the state’s Republican-controlled senate.

Florida became the first state to adopt Stand Your Ground in 2005. By 2011, with a boost from the National Rifle Association and the American Legislative Exchange Council, 24 more states, including New Hampshire, had passed similar laws.

Radio Station Pulls Rick Ross and Lil Wayne from Rotation

The questions have been asked, Is Hip Hop Music Destroying America, Is Hip Hop A Threat To Our Children or Should Rappers Be Accountable For Their Lyrics? You be the judge. Earlier this year the song “Karate Chop” leaked online featuring rapper Lil Wayne. He raps, “Bout to put rims on my skateboard wheels/Beat that (expletive/woman genital) up like Emmett Till.” A few weeks later a song by rapper Rocko featuring Rick Ross was release called “You Don’t Even Know It.” Rick Ross raps, “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it/ I took her home and I enjoyed that, she ain’t even know it.” Yes, we have our freedom of speech right, but when is freedom of speech taken too far?

Ok, seriously, when did Dwayne go from being this geeky dude with flip up eye glasses to being this sexy heartthrob that was so irresistible to Whitley…lol. Oh and isn’t it interesting that Jaleesa was escorted down the aisle by her future husband Col Taylor????

    • That was always my question. The transition was way too abrupt for my taste.

      • lamh36

Oh, I think it was gradual once Denise left. Then they built the Whitley/Dwayne relationship fairly gradually. The beginning of the 2nd season I think is when they added Kim and Freddie and began to “rehabilitate” Whitley’s character and then slow-burned the Whitley/Dwayne thing. Then it culminated with the ep where the went to visit Denis and Dwayne and Whitley kissed for the first time. Then they just flirted and didn’t really “date” until after Dwayne came from Japan.

Anyway, I think it just seems so sudden cause of how geeky DWayne was in Season1, especially with women. In fact, other than with Whitley, Dwayne was still kinda geeky with women.

ETA: Damn, that was way more than needed to be said…lol. I just love ADW so don’t get me started…lol

        • vulcan_girl

I never liked rehabilitated Whitley. I loved, take no-shyt-thinks Denise is an idiot-Millicent do my bidding- princess Whitley. Whitley just became a little too dumb when she was dating Byron and Dwayne.

          • lamh36

yeah they did dumb her down, but once she and Dwayne broke up and she got with Byron, I think they at least made her attempt to grow up. If I remember correctly, Dwayne was her “first”, so her whole life was Dwayne. I remember that feeling from my sisters. Once Dwayne “emotionally cheated” on her with that chick, they seemed to try to make her grow up a bit.

        • I think you hit it. It was more her makeover than his.

    • Town

Dwayne didn’t buy into Whitley’s Miss Magnolia Southern Belle Bougie Queen BS and that excited & intrigued Whitley. She was bored by the Julian & Sen. Byron types. Dwayne was excited/intrigued by Whitley’s Miss Magnolia persona but he didn’t put up with her BS. He would’ve been alright with a Kinu/Kimberly Reese type but he would’ve been bored by them long term.

Dick Morris Says He Is Working On An RNC Ad Aimed At Latinos

Dick Morris is working with Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus on a new television advertisement that will include Preibus seeking to attract Latino voters, Morris revealed during an appearance in New York City Thursday.

Speaking at the Poli Conference, a political consulting event for Latin American campaign professionals, Morris said the ad will feature Priebus reaching out to “those Latin Americans who’ve come to the United States to help us build our country, to help harvest our food, to help make our economy work and [Priebus’] message is ‘welcome, we need you, you’re making our country younger, more prosperous, harder working and we need you for the future.'”

According to Morris, the ad will make use of “that concept of reflecting back to people their own value and their own worth. In the advertisement he [Priebus] says, ‘we honor our ancestors who took covered wagons to settle the west and brave the Indians, but you are the new pioneers, you are the new people in America doing that.’ And I think that is a very, very interesting thing to do in a campaign.”

A priest who was imprisoned for five months during Argentina’s military

It is therefore wrong to assert that our capture took place at the initiative of Father Bergoglio.” alics’ statement appears to contradict what he originally told Argentine journalist Horacio Verbitsky. Verbitsky appeared recently on Democracy Now!
and said Jalics confirmed a report by the second priest, Orlando Yorio,
who is now dead, that Bergoglio was involved in their imprisonment.

Indianapolis, Indiana on Thursday and stood silently as the state chapter of Moms Demand Action held a rally in favor of limiting the availability of military style weapons and universal background checks.

At least two or three men showed up at the rally site before the event began and engaged in a discussion about gun regulations with the group, two participants in the action told Think Progress. The armed men —who were later joined by another man carrying a hand gun and a woman who runs Indiana Moms Against Gun Control — insisted that they had a right to carry the loaded weapons:

  • Obama Order Establishes Bipartisan Voting Commission

President Obama signed an executive order on Thursday establishing a bipartisan commission to examine problems of voter access after complaints of long lines at polling stations during last year’s election.

Mr. Obama promised during his State of the Union address last month
that he would appoint such a panel, saying that “we are betraying our
values” if voters end up sacrificing their franchise “because they can’t
wait for five, six, seven hours just to cast their ballot.”

The commission will be headed by the lawyers for last year’s presidential campaigns: Robert Bauer, who represented Mr. Obama, and Benjamin Ginsberg, who represented his Republican challenger, Mitt Romney. Mr. Bauer has long been Mr. Obama’s legal adviser and served a stint as his White House counsel. In addition to Mr. Romney, Mr. Ginsberg represented former President George W. Bush during both of his campaigns and the 2000 recount.

“When President Obama comes to the PortMiami tomorrow, we would like him to commit the federal government’s reimbursement of $75 million for

    state port investments.”

The guy who rejected federal money is begging for federal money. Again. Scott can talk tough and call it a reimbursement if he wants to but the reality is he’s sitting in the lobby doing a lot of sweating just before The Bank President calls him in the office.

  • This mofo right chere! I doubt very seriously Kimani Gray’s mother changed her phone number just to avoid speaking to Bloomberg. He really needs to stop and shame on the NYT for trying to paint the family as ungrateful!

    A Mother’s Loss and a Mayor’s Unwelcome Sympathy

For several days and through various channels, the office of Mayor
Michael R. Bloomberg, a firm advocate of gun control, as well as the
mayor himself, had tried to contact the family of a Brooklyn 16-year-old who was killed by plainclothes officers after the police said he had pointed an illegally obtained revolver at them.

It would have been an unusual moment of private condolences offered
to the family of Kimani Gray: Mr. Bloomberg has described the deadly
shooting as justified based on the police account.

It is perhaps even more unusual that the efforts have, so far, been rebuffed by the mother of the teenager, Carol Gray.

“We weren’t interested in the photo op,” said Kenneth J. Montgomery, a lawyer representing Ms. Gray. “In the totem pole of important things
and important emotions, that would come somewhere at the bottom.”

…“I give eulogies at cops’ funerals,” the mayor said. “I call parents
when their kids are killed. You know, sometimes I don’t get to them.
    There’s this 16-year-old” – he said, referring to Mr. Gray – “I’ve
tried, and the woman, the mother, is not taking any calls, changed her
phone number so I can’t, but I did reach out.”

—-First lady returns to Chicago to discuss youth violence

    — – As Chicago continues to struggle with gang violence, the city plans to bring in the big guns for answers.
First Lady Michelle Obama heads to Chicago April 10
to address “youth empowerment,” according to a statement from the White House. If you’re wondering what the empowerment of youth means, look further into the announcement for the answer: Obama will attend a joint luncheon meeting to discuss “youth violence in Chicago.”

It’s a familiar topic in a city that recently buried a 6-month-old girl killed in a shooting fueled by gangs. Obama herself attended a separate funeral for teen Hadiya Pendleton, killed at a park by a gang member. Pendleton’s parents even sat next to the first lady during President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.

    – – ‘Judge Joe Brown’ Cancelled After 15 Seasons

    – – — –CBS Television Distribution has brought down the gavel on “Judge Joe Brown (pictured),” the second highest-rated court show in television syndication that stars the no-nonsense ajudicator Joe Brown, reports the Huffington Post.
Reportedly, the cancellation took place as a result of not being able to come to a happy medium over Brown’s $20-million annual salary, which CBS was looking to trim because of the show’s dip in ratings.

Even though all of the syndicated court shows have seen a decline in
viewership, Brown’s half-hour daily program has maintained its No. 2 two spot behind the viewer favorite, “Judge Judy, ” whose No. 1 spot beats all of her competitors by a wide margin.

    – – –U.S. President Barack Obama had a clear message in interviews with two of America’s largest Spanish-language broadcast television networks on Wednesday: Immigration reform is coming soon.
A group of lawmakers are close to working out the details of their proposal, Obama said.

“I’m actually very optimistic that when they return in early April we
will see a bill ready to move through the process,” he told Telemundo.

“The most important thing is that we are seeing a strong compromise
to resolve the problem,” he said. “I’ve got my own legislation, I’m
prepared to step in, but I don’t think that’s going to be necessary.”

In another interview that aired at the same time on Univision, the president made a similar point.”My sense is that they are close,” Obama told Univision. “My expectation is we’ll see a bill on the floor of the Senate next month.”

His comments to Telemundo and Univision — in interviews that were conducted in English and aired in dubbed Spanish — were part of the
president’s latest push to ignite congressional movement on immigration reform.

Idris Elba says his upcoming Mandela biopic is ‘hands down the best

    While Nelson Mandela’s recent hospitalization
has been garnering headlines, actor Idris Elba plans on making news of his own as he announced that he will be portraying the South African leader in an upcoming biopic.

According to The Guardian, Elba believes the film to be the finest interpretation of Mandela yet, saying that the movie is “hands down the best.”

“Not in terms of performance,” he clarifies. “But my film’s about his
entire life. Anyone wanting to understand who Mandela was should go and watch my film.”

Although the British-born actor is aware that his movie won’t be the first to portray Mandela’s story on the big screen, he does believe thatit will capture a more complete portrayal of the South African leader’s experiences.
