    The Importance Of Biden

Michael Hirsh highlights Joe Biden’s integral role in the Obama administration, wondering if he is the most influential VP in history:

Over the past four years Biden has insinuated himself into the White House, while seeming hardly to try, in a way that no other vice president in memory has done. He and Obama, both consummate pragmatists though they tend to be liberal in outlook, have achieved something close to a mind meld across a whole range of issues, including foreign policy, the economy, and political strategy. Biden said it outright in his speech during the presidential campaign: “I literally get to be the last guy in the room with the president. That’s our arrangement.” That’s no small thing in a town where power is often measured in minutes of presidential face time.

But by far the biggest achievement is wielding all this influence while being widely viewed as a joke. And the breadth of his portfolio is pretty amazing:

Fiscal issues and guns are only a small sampling of this vice president’s portfolio. Back in 2010 it was Biden’s office that, in the main, orchestrated the handover to the Iraqis. It is Biden’s view of Afghanistan that has, bit by bit, come to dominate thinking inside the 2014 withdrawal plan. On financial reform it was Biden who prodded an indecisive Obama to embrace, at long last, Paul Volcker’s idea of barring banks from risky trading, according to Austan Goolsbee, formerly the head of Obama’s Council of Economic Advisers. The VP also tilted the discussion in favor of a bailout of the Big Three auto companies, according to Jared Bernstein, Biden’s former economic adviser. “I think he made a difference in president’s thinking,” Bernstein said. “He understood the importance of the auto companies to their communities, and throughout the country.”

I love Joe Biden but Andrew Sullivan can BITE THE BIG CACTUS with this piece of caca.

I read that now Sully expects people to pay out cash $$ for his words. I say good luck to that you, self-important blow hard!

    • GN

Ride or Die Joe / JoeChainz is an epic Vice President to an epic, masterful President of the United States. Stellar WH.

    • Worldwatcher7

“Over the past four years Biden has insinuated himself into the White House…”

As if Biden is some kind of foreign spy. Biden plays a prominent role because PBO, aka The Boss, likes it that way.

      These people are diagnosable.

      • Aquagranny911

I would have ‘peed’ on that particular sentence myself but I would rather save my water for weeds!

Now that Hillary looks like a “goner” the new meme will be that Joe Biden is the real “power” in the WH & he should run for Prez in 2016.

These people are more than “diagnosable” They are certifiable & should be “pink papered” for at least a 72 hour hold in the hospital mental ward nearest them!

But we should be prepared to read & hear more of this amazing caca as time goes on.

        • TyrenM

I agree 200%. I think they read here and figured out Joe would get more votes HERE then Hillary. So lets begin the torpedoing. Punks.

    • jds09

…”widely viewed as a joke” by who? Doesn’t he know Joe is a panty-dropper in some circles? I’ve seen the tape where women start screaming when he enters a room.

      • PBomb

Actually, I have met people who in casual conversation think that Biden is a bonafide idiot. In fact about 2 months before the election, me and the spousal unit were eating at a restaurant and some guy was talking about how big of idiot Biden is.

Before the election in 2008, there was a guy I worked with who found Biden to be too dumb to tie his shoelaces. I have read some sites(right-wing ones) where they honestly believe he is an airhead. When I worked in tv, I would occasionally hear about Biden.

Honestly, I don’t know where the assumptions come from. He has always came across as very knowledgeable and down-to-earth. I am baffled by the various insults about his intelligence, you have to be somewhat intelligent to understand foreign policy and that is his specialty.

        • Aquagranny911

I find this totally baffling since the Repug goatfiggers barely have a pea wit to share among them.

The only thing I can figure is that the folks saying caca like this are even more intellectually challenged than most.

        • GN

Perhaps it’s because the Vice President has a tendency to go over the top in his exuberance or something? I don’t get it either; Joe Biden is clearly very, very smart, and besides, President Obama would *never* have an idiot as his running-mate and his governance-mate.

        • Town

The reason people think Joe Biden is an idiot is because he says things they want to say but THEY will get called a racist, stupid etc for saying it. So to justify why Joe Biden gets away with it and they don’t, they call him an idiot. JMO.

          • JojoRaze

But notice the right stopped saying that mess when Joe Biden treated Paul Ryan like the idiot he was. I think Charles Blow said Joe B treated Paul like he was an intern.

I like Joe Biden because he knows people thinks he’s an idiot and uses that to his advantage to disarm people when it’s time to battle. He acts like a working-class white dude who knows his folks weren’t considered really white until WWII.

I think that’s why he gets along with PBO because PBO lets folk underestimate him and then come back swinging when they don’t expect it.

VP Joey is epic because PRESIDENT Barack Obama lets him be. VPB didn’t “insinuate” his way into the White House — He’s the Vice President of United States. He’s the last man in the room with the President because PBO wants him there.

I LOVE me some Joey and I’m not saying that PBO has all the answers, but don’t try to praise Joey at the expense of PBO.

Y’all will do anything to keep from giving a brother his due.

Democrats Send ‘Tea Party Membership Cards’ To GOP Freshmen
Benjy Sarlin 2:11 PM EST, Thursday January 3, 2013

As new members of Congress are sworn in on Thursday, Democrats are looking to brand the incoming Republican class early on. The DCCC is sending out the above “Tea Party membership cards” to the offices of 35 freshman Republicans.

Press releases in their individual districts identify each member as “the newest Tea Party House Republican who will put millionaires ahead of the middle class and dysfunction ahead of progress,” according to DCCC communications director Jesse Ferguson.

    — —Challenges of black radio – –

    – —–Recent changes at some local black-oriented radio stations have listeners wondering how will their lives be affected and how much true and vital information will they receive?

The African-American community is again at risk of being divided, marginalized and deceived by some black talk show hosts and others who do not have the best interests of our community at heart. Because a person is of African ancestry does not particularly suggest that they love or care for their race.

Black radio has transcended many fazes. From the pioneering days of Jack L. Cooper, Al Benson, Wiley Price and Spider Burk to a serious, tangible medium, yet there are still many fundamental and critical problems to confront and overcome.
    — SNAP – — –
In February 2013, I would like to ask black people to celebrate Black History Month by making history and launching a campaign to redirect black and corporate dollars back into the black community, black-owned media and black businesses.

We do not own many media outlets, but what we can be is more responsive. We must counter the hate radio movement with programs that provide useful and helpful information.
    – —-SNIP – —

    – – Black radio has its challenges, and you must decide who our true leaders are and who the false prophets are. Through our radio programs we should develop positive alternatives for negative or violent behaviors, and it is imperative that we reveal facts to an informed electorate. We must hold our on-air personalities accountable.

Florida man who shot victim asked: ‘Are you Muslim?’
    By Stephen C. Webster
    Thursday, January 3, 2013 14:28 EST

A Florida man was shot in the face twice with a pellet gun during the early hours of Wednesday morning after being confronted by another man in the parking lot of a Walmart store in Lutz, near Tampa Bay.

The shooter allegedly asked his victim, “Are you of Middle Eastern descent?” and “Are you Muslim?” before shouting a racial slur and opening fire.

Police told a reporter with MyFox Tampa Bay that the suspect is still at large, and that they are investigating the incident as a hate crime. The shooter is described as a white male between 18 and 30 with short blond hair, standing about 6 feet tall and weighing about 180 pounds.

Have these pundits conveniently forgot the impeding defense cuts? The defense contractors must be breathing down the necks of the GOP right now. PBO has the GOP in a pincher move, defense contractors on one side and public opinion on another. He just needs to let nature take its course.

this is important. Its about the declining incarceration rates and why its underreported

    • Good info! This needs to be tweeted to the Sole Patrol and the New Media Negroes like Jasiri X.

      • Miranda

But if PBO doesn’t sign an executive order freeing all incarcerated black men while wearing a dashiki and simultaneously giving all those men a gubmit job with full benefits – then this info is just mute.

      good info, dannie

    • morphus

In the first year of the Obama administration, “analysts” coined the phase “the Obama-effect” to explain why worsening economic conditions didn’t yield higher crime rates. Maintaining high populations in prisons and jails are also budget busters for many states. I suspect actions of the activist DOJ inspecting and threatening to close jails across the country because of warehousing conditions may also be a factor. Another possible reason for decline in reporting … two-thirds of the 750,000 inmates in jail are in pre-trial status.

  • Speaking of Mellody Hobson, who was featured in yesterday’s open thread, George Lucas put a ring on it.

George Lucas Engaged to DreamWorks Animation Chairman Mellody Hobson
1:24 PM PST 1/3/2013 by Sophie A. Schillaci

Just months after selling Lucasfilm Ltd. to Disney, George Lucas is ready for another big change: marriage.

The Star Wars writer-director is engaged to longtime girlfriend and DreamWorks Animation chairman Mellody Hobson, a rep for Lucasfilm confirms to The Hollywood Reporter. It will be the first marriage for Hobson, 43, and the second for Lucas, 68.

…“As I start a new chapter in my life, it is gratifying that I have the opportunity to devote more time and resources to philanthropy,” Lucas said at the time.

It is not yet known when and where Lucas and Hobson, who have dated since 2006, will tie the knot.

Where is the racial diversity? Something is very wrong with this picture. Diane Sawyer talks with the women of the Senate

The 112th Congress wasn’t very much liked by the American people. Maybe we’ll appreciate the 113th Congress more. Probably not. But it is the most diverse in history. 98 women are in the new Congress, including these 20 senators; for the first time white men will be a minority among House Democrats; six members are openly gay and the first Hindu, Buddhist and women combat veterans are also serving in this Congress.

Obama First Since Eisenhower to Win 51% of Vote Twice

A revised vote count eight weeks after the presidential election finds President Obama nationally won 65.9 million votes — or 51.1% of the vote — against challenger Mitt Romney, who took 60.9 million votes and 47.2% of the total, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.
Obama is the first president to achieve that level of support in two elections since President Dwight D. Eisenhower was re-elected in 1956.

Oh and of course Romney’s percent of the vote: 47%%% BWHAHAHAHAHAHAH

No One Else Wanted to Be Speaker

    by BooMan
Thu Jan 3rd, 2013 at 01:36:21 PM EST

    Steve Benen makes an observation:

According to GOP leaders, policymakers need to replace the $1.2 trillion in automatic sequestration cuts with some other, comparable cuts, and need to come up with $1.5 trillion in cuts in order to raise the debt limit. Both will have to happen at around the same time, no later than the end of February, and be independent of the $1 trillion in cuts Obama already accepted during the last debt-ceiling fight in 2011.
In other words, according to public comments from McConnell and Boehner, Republicans seriously believe President Obama must accept $2.7 trillion in cuts — without raising taxes at all — within the next two months. And if not, there will be an enormous crisis.

And what is it, exactly, that GOP leaders expect to cut by $2.7 trillion? Oddly enough, they haven’t said, but (a) Republicans apparently anticipate deep cuts to social insurance programs like Medicare and Social Security; and (b) Democrats are supposed to help Republicans come up with the list of cuts.

    This won’t end well.

Probably the only reason that Speaker Boehner still has his job is that no one else wants it. The president has no intention of even answering the phone when Boehner calls about the debt ceiling. As for sequestration, the president doesn’t have to sign anything he doesn’t want to sign, and he won’t. The Republicans are asking for nearly $3 trillion in cuts. Let them put that in a House bill and try to pass it. It should be very amusing to watch them try.

    — –Black Authors Thrive Through Business of Black Book Clubs — –

    – – – –Over the last 20 years, the channels for discovering new books, especially books by first-time and emerging authors, have shrunk or disappeared. Newspapers and magazines dedicate mere slivers of arts sections to book reviews — if at all. Those papers like the New York Times that do devote more space to book coverage rarely review debut authors. Likewise, bookstores prefer to invite already established, bestselling, or celebrity writers to do readings and signings. That leaves Oprah — and the Queen of Talk has endorsed only 72 books since she started her eponymous book club in 1996, including the two she has recommended since her 2.0 reboot.
    – – – -SNIP – – –

In this landscape, black book clubs offer authors a valuable — albeit extremely competitive —promotion and sales channel. “[Book clubs] have advanced far beyond the small get-togethers in someone’s living room,” says Carol Mackey, editor-in-chief of direct-to-consumer book club Black Expressions.

In keeping with the tradition of African-American book clubs that dates back to the 1820s, many are highly-structured reading societies. The book club model has also evolved to leverage the internet as a promotional vehicle similar to AALBC. Of course, writers and publishers are eager to get their books on the lists of both traditional and 2.0 clubs.

    GOP declares tax debate ‘over’

    By Steve Benen
    Thu Jan 3, 2013 12:06 PM EST

Whether there are negotiations over the debt ceiling or not, there will be bipartisan talks over sequestration cuts and keeping the government’s lights on very soon. For President Obama, there’s no reason the two sides can’t reach a “balanced” compromise.

Congressional Republican leaders are already insisting that won’t happen. Take a look at this new op-ed from Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.):

Predictably, the President is already claiming that his tax hike on the “rich” isn’t enough. I have news for him: the moment that he and virtually every elected Democrat in Washington signed off on the terms of the current arrangement, it was the last word on taxes. That debate is over

    • goldenstar

This from the man who was determined to make this President a one-termer. He has difficulty following through on his threats.

      • jds09

The republicans will pretend to fight. Their base will demand all kinds of bluster and chest beating. I think that’s more important to them than winning. I hope McConnell gets a real fight from Ashley Judd. A woman kicking his ass would be priceless.

        • rikyrah

I don’t think she can win, after all it’s Kentucky..

    – – – –General Motors Tripled Sales Of Chevy Volt In 2012, Selling One Million Vehicles Over 30 MPG

    – — –General Motors had a record-breaking year for fuel-efficient autos in 2012.

The company became the first American auto manufacturer to sell more than one million vehicles with a 30-mpg fuel rating. And due to a surge in demand from Califorina, GM tripled sales of its electric model, the Chevy Volt.

Motor Trend reported on the year end sales figures:

Chevrolet posted the biggest sales gains of any GM brand last year, with total volume up 4.3 percent year-over-year. Several models made enormous leaps in sales volume: the Sonic compact, for instance, finished December up just 4.3 percent, but a strong year helped push the car to a 415-percent overall gain compared to its first year on sale. The Chevrolet Volt, too, saw sales leap 206 percent from just 7671 units in its difficult first year on the market to a respectable 23,461 cars in 2012. Despite a significant drop to just 1293 sales last month, the Colorado small pickup posted an 18.7 percent annual sales gain. And the Equinox crossover enjoyed a 7.5-percent boost to 19,551 December sales and ended the year up 13.1 percent.
    – – – -SNIP – —

    – – –As one of the most prominent automakers getting into the electric vehicle market, GM took a lot of heat from conservative politicians, bloggers, and Fox News pundits about its Chevy Volt. The car was called “crappy” and labeled an “exploding Obamamobile” by commentators looking for an opportunity to attack President Obama’s investments in clean technologies.

    – – – – –With Millions Still Waiting For Sandy Relief, Republicans Reintroduce Obamacare Repeal – – –

    – – – —The 112th Congress gaveled to a close on Thursday afternoon without passing a relief package for victims of Hurricane Sandy or reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act, but Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) isn’t too concerned about finishing what Republicans had left undone. Instead, at 12:00 PM she introduced the very first piece of legislation to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which states are now busily implementing.

House Republicans have unsuccessfully voted 33 times in the last two years to eliminate health care reform and wasted at least 88 hours and $50 million, while failing to pass a single piece of job creation legislation in the last session of Congress.

    – –Dozens of Republicans, including 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney, ran against Obamacare, yet the party suffered losses every step along the way. The Supreme Court upheld the law, House repeal efforts went nowhere in the Democratically-controlled Senate, and President Obama has pledged to veto any effort to rescind the measure. —SNIP – —

–But House Republicans are apparently not quite ready to give up the fight. At this rate, they could be on track to becoming even less productive than the least productive Congress in U.S. history.

    – –Violence Against Women Rages On

—-Protesters in India are demanding justice for the 23-year-old medical student who ultimately died as the result of a brutal gang-rape in the nation’s capital on December 16 by calling for a nationwide shutdown today. The savage attack immediately sparked mass protests across the country, with thousands of Indians pouring out onto the streets, continuing to demand that the government take swift action not only against the perpetrators, but also to make the country safer for women in general.

Protestors have said that political leaders would not be allowed to take part in the bandh, lest the public outrage become exploited for political gain. It remains to be seen whether Indian politicians will take the public cry for better protection of women’s rights seriously.

    — -Here at home, some of our political leaders have decided to speak up in the fight to end violence against women — except, in the case of the House GOP, they’re on the wrong side of that fight. On Tuesday night, House Majority Leader Eric Canter actually killed the legislation that has done a huge amount to help victims of such violence. This is first time since its original passage in 1994 that the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) has not been reauthorized, despite a long history of bipartisan support.

    – – –Why did this important piece of legislation die? Because some congressional Republicans opposed extending protections to three groups: Native American, undocumented, and LGBT victims of violence. If you thought that we had reached the point where sexual assault was finally considered an assault on humanity, no matter whom it involved, you were wrong — according to the House GOP.
