Keep an eye on the Big Lie, ctd.
    By Greg Sargent

Yesterday I noted here that the dust-up over Mitt Romney’s claims about female job loss are premised on a much larger falsehood that is central to Romney’s whole case against Obama.

To wit: Romney has been arguing that the way to judge Obama’s policies is to look at the net number of jobs lost since he took office. But that metric includes the huge amounts of jobs hemorraghed during the months when the economy was in free fall, just after Obama took office — and before those same policies took effect.

Romney has been using this metric for months and months, regularly adjusting the number of net jobs lost on Obama’s watch downward to keep pace with good economic news, with virtually no scrutiny from major news orgs.

Today Steve Benen comes up with the clearest explanation for this fallacy I’ve seen yet:

Were was this outrage when those NASCAR necks booed Mrs. Obama? Were was the outrage when they falsely accused Mrs. Obama of wasting taxpayer money on trips and spending sprees? Were was the outrage when some rethug made reference to Mrs Obama and an escaped animal from the zoo? You heard nothing, nada, zip it was so quite you could hear a rat piss on cotton and now you have all this fake outrage and unnecessary apologizing simply because someone told the truth about Missy Ann, how utterly pathetic the media, the right and a great number of folks on the left are.

Instead, Sarah PAC spent $255,000 on fundraising and a small team of political consultants that Palin has continued to support even as she receded from the political spotlight during the heat of the GOP presidential primary. It also appears to have spent $19,000 on a video rebutting the HBO film “Game Change.”

ALEC ties put allies on edge
By Steve Benen – Thu Apr 12, 2012 4:52 PM EDT.

The American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), which writes ready-made conservative legislation for Republican state legislators, has traditionally been anonymous, working behind the scenes to advance a far-right agenda. Shadowy obscurity allowed ALEC to be more effective.

But as ALEC finds itself where it didn’t want to be — in the spotlight — the group is losing corporate sponsors and finding its political allies on edge.

Take Virginia, for example, where ProgressVA released a report on ALEC’s influence on policymaking in the Commonwealth. Virginia House Speaker Bill Howell (R) wasn’t pleased with the report, so today, ProgressVA Executive Director Anna Scholl asked Howell directly about his concerns. The Washington Post posted a video excerpt of the exchange.

The point of contention seemed to be over the taxpayer money Virginia spent to send lawmakers to ALEC events. ProgressVA’s report claimed that the trips cost the state roughly $230,000 over the last decade, while in reality, the trips cost the state … roughly $230,000 over the last decade.

Howell pointed to this as an inaccuracy, even though it’s true, because Virginia also sent state lawmakers to a different conference that cost even more.

Puzzled as to why this makes ProgressVA’s report untrue, Scholl pressed further. The Republican leader, agitated, said, “I guess I’m not speaking in little enough words for you to understand.”

The ProgressVA chief responded, “I’m a smart girl, actually. I went to the University of Virginia; I benefited from public education; I think words with multiple syllables would be just fine for me.”

That questions about ALEC are making its allies this uncomfortable suggests a shifting landscape for the organization.

Gotta post this comment from Balloon Juice about the Hilary Rosen non-traversy and how supporters are playing into the GOP/RW/R-Money trap:

    Catsy Says:

Everyone knows what she MEANT to say. (lamh35: this is rom previous commenter)

This is a joke, right? It’s not about what she MEANT to say, it’s what she DID say that is being completely omitted by everyone—including you—who is still flogging this manufactured outrage.

    She (lamh35: Rosen)
DID in fact say of Ann Romney:

Rosen: She’s never really dealt with the kinds of economic issues that a majority of the women in this country are facing in terms of how do we feed our kids, how do we send them to school and how do we—why do we worry about their future?

She DID in fact say that immediately following the words that everyone is removing from their context.

Rosen’s only offense was a single line that was twisted into being offensive solely by entirely removing it from the context of everything else that came before and after it.

    (lamh35, preious commenter)
And I guess she sees that since she has now, after engaging in drama all day, and fanning the flames of what is a ridiculous fire, APOLOGIZED.

An apology which very notably—and properly—does NOT back down from the point she was making or concede ground to the right’s attempt to frame this as an attack on stay-at-home moms.

Rosen: “Let’s put the faux ‘war against stay at home moms’ to rest once and for all. As a mom I know that raising children is the hardest job there is. As a pundit, I know my words on CNN last night were poorly chosen. In response to Mitt Romney on the campaign trail referring to his wife as a better person to answer questions about women than he is, I was discussing his poor record on the plight of women’s financial struggles. Here is my more fulsome view of the issues. As a partner in a firm full of women who work outside of the home as well as stay at home mothers, all with plenty of children, gender equality is not a talking point for me. It is an issue I live every day. I apologize to Ann Romney and anyone else who was offended. Let’s declare peace in this phony war and go back to focus on the substance.”

    Good for her…

The only reason this issue is having any traction at all is because people like you are helping the right wing lie about what she said.

Stop doing their job for them.

    • conlakappa

It is also the cycle of the media’s own War Against Women. They do this silly pitting every 6 months or so.

David Axelrod To CNN’s John King: Hilary Rosen Is Your Employee, Not Ours

    by James Crugnale

Chief Obama strategist David Axelrod spoke with CNN’s John King Thursday and distanced the campaign from Hilary Rosen‘s controversial comments that Ann Romney had not worked a day in her life. “She actually is your employee, not ours,” Axelrod told King. “She works for CNN. I think CNN would not allow her to be an operative for our campaign.”

    • lamh35

Personally, I thought this was a snappy comeback from Axelrod. He’s condeming the remarks but also pointed out to CNN who like the rest of the media are letting Romney’s campaign lie about Rosen’s relationship to the Obama campaign…period.

          • Camille

            Exactly.

The repudiation was strictly about the many stay at home mothers who might erroneously begin to think Ann Romney is one of them.

Bitch ain’t, but some low-information folks out there might begin to feel empathetic and kindred spirity towards Ms. Anne.

And just like Hillary Clinton, Ms. Anne will experience a light bulb moment and will just usurp the role, exploit it to the hilt and all of a sudden begin to fancy herself the patron saint of white women even though it was always about her and never, ever about any other woman.

  • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

During the civil rights movement of the 1960s in the South, it was rare to see a major march or demonstration without white clergy of various denominations and faith traditions (admittedly, most from the North) in the multi-racial vanguard, with a significant contingent of idealistic young white activists and trade unionists back in the ranks.

By stark contrast, the local movement in support of Trayvon Martin’s family has been led almost exclusively by African American clergy. There have been few if any white pastors, priests or rabbis in the front ranks or on the speakers’ platform. At the four major marches and rallies here that I attended, there was only a sprinkling of white people at all—mostly old lefties from the ‘60s and younger ones from the area’s Occupy movement. It was difficult to find a white person in the crowd not holding a microphone, camera or notebook.

Participation by local white clergy has been especially tardy—and tepid. A newly-arrived Episcopal bishop and about a dozen mainline and evangelical ministers joined one march and then faded away. Just one white Southern Baptist minister spoke from a platform, leading a very low-key prayer.

Two More Companies — Including Candymaker Mars, Inc. — Sever Ties With ALEC |

The American Legislative Exchange Council, a right-wing corporate front group that helped passed “stand your ground” laws and voter suppression initiatives in states across the country, lost two more member companies. In an email sent to Color of Change, a progressive group organizing the petition against ALEC, Mars, Inc., the maker of M&M’s and Snickers, announced that they have “decided not to renew the ALEC membership in 2012.” Arizona’s largest energy company, Arizona Public Service, has severed ties with ALEC as well. Following pressure from progressives, a host of other companies announced they would no longer contribute to ALEC in the past two weeks, including Coca Cola, Pepsi Co, Intuit, Kraft, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Wendy’s.

While Dems were running to protect Ann Romney, this happened:

Governor Jan Brewer Signs Arizona’s Extreme New Abortion Law

Despite its name, critics derided the Women’s Health and Safety Act that Arizona Governor Jan Brewer signed into law today as cruel, dangerous, and hostile to women—likely to deter many Arizona women from seeking an abortion, and to distress those who nonetheless go through with one.

Life starts earliest in Arizona, which now defines gestational age as beginning on the first day of a woman’s last period, rather than at fertilization. In practice, that means the state has banned abortions after about 18 weeks (20 weeks from the last menstruation) except in the case of medical emergencies. While that provision has been much discussed, abortions after that point account for only about 1 percent of the procedures currently performed.

IMHO, now that an arrest has been made, the parents need a mintues to digest and grieve and ease their minds from the ordeal of advocating and protesting in hopes of an arrest, these interviews are not good.

And I suspect that it’s the lawyers who are advocating doing these interviews. With each subsequent interview, the parents espeically Trayvon’s mom just seems tired and when you are tired, things like the “Trayvon’s killing was an accident” statement gets made.

I hope someone, maybe Rev Al is counseling them to rest from interviews.

Anyway, good hope for the family.

Attorney Crump has fallen in love with the glitz and glamour of cable news studios. He’s putting them on show after show after show because he’s fallen in love with the limelight. It needs to stop. I could see them doing a major interview with Oprah. But other than that? No. All this going on Fox and CNN every other night needs to end. Now.

      • Miranda

THIS. I feel the same way.

        • itgurl_29

Now that Zimmerman has FINALLY been taken into custody and charged, it’s time for Crump to stop trying this case in the media and let the prosecutors do their job. Every other night, he has Trayvon’s parents doing someone’s cable news show and it needs to stop. Like Lahm said, all it does is create more and more opportunities for someone to say the wrong thing, ex. “the killing was an accident”. No more tv, no more newspaper interviews. Maybe do one last interview with Oprah, and that’s enough.

He’s not helping them by putting them on tv every evening. It could end up hurting them and the case. He needs to fall back. But once you get a taste of that fame, it can be a drug.

Since Zimmerman has now been charged Ms. Fulton and Mr. Martin need to go home and go mourn. You can tell Ms. Fulton wants to cry half the time you see her on TV, which is why she made such a great advocate for her son. I admire them because as divorced parents they could have easily blamed each other for Trayvon’s death since T died while visiting his father and was there because he had been getting into teenage growing pains while living with his mother. That being said, they stayed united to fight for their son. Still, until the trial starts, they should go home and start crying and mourning for their son in private. When the trial starts, then they should go on TV and other media to advocate for their son.

Rick Santorum’s PIMP PAC sponsor and major Republican contributor Foster Friess, known also for his aspirin between the leg comment, had this to say on WEDNESDAY, almost a full 24 hrs ago:

“There are a lot of things that haven’t been hammered at because Rick and Mitt have been going at each other,” Friess said during an interview on Fox Business News. “Now that they have trained their barrels on President Obama, I hope his teleprompters are bulletproof.”

and Hillary Rosen is still being talked about.

Tweet this shit to the forefront.

    • MonieTalks

At TOD, they have an local interview of the President being asked about this Hillary Rosen thing

Well, that only means Mitt Romney MUST be held accountable and respond, and repudiate Foster Friess’ comments, right?

Am I the only one who sucked my teeth when the “Hillary tweet” stans made an entry with PBO and Hillary Clinton, showing PBO texting Hillary what is she doing and Hillary saying “running the world.”

    Really?

    Gotta love that subliminal shade..

They’re just doing what they always do when they get their asses kicked by a person of color. Rewrite history. It’s the only thing that keeps them from going crazy.

    • Camille

      No, you weren’t.

I kept meaning to post about it but never got round to it. Also, I’m trying really hard to contain my loathing of the Clintons and their idiotic PUMA following who will make up any shit and pull beaucoup crap from their butt holes to try to make Hillary Clinton look better than she really is.

They used one of the many staged photo ops Hillary did for that 2011 Time magazine propaganda piece she and her PUMA’s in the media and at the State Dept. dreamed up when they were still trying to push for President Obama to replace V.P Biden with Hillary.

Hillary is sitting in a plane wearing sunglasses and pretending to be reading some documents –

They then use a picture of President Obama from the 2008 campaign between events where he is stretched out on a sofa catching up and checking his e-mails on his blackberry.

I really despise these people. I really do.

It sounded better than that mess MJB was doing. I was offended not that a black woman was singing about chicken, but by how corny the commercial was. Plus, Mary had this stank look on her face that just screamed, “I’m only doing this for the $2 million.” When you have sold your integrity, you have to do it all the way.

This young man sang that song. He even said he was feeling the tortilla down to his feet. The backing track is good too. It’s an earworm. I will be singing this mess while on the subway in the next few days and wondering why come.

ETA: This parody of the MJB commercial made me lose all sense, though. The woman who plays Mary was on Wild and Out and she has no sense.

      • Alma98

I liked his version better than Mary’s too, he can actually sing.

    – – -Pennsylvania’s Voter ID Law Adds The Amish To The Long List Of Voters Harmed By Voter ID – — —

    – – – -In March, Pennsylvania became the first state in 2012 to enact a voter ID law. It could have a disastrous impact on the 700,000 Pennsylvanians who currently lack photo ID, but it also harm those who still need an ID to vote but object to having their picture taken for religious reasons, like the Amish and Mennonite communities. They can use a nonphoto ID to vote, but only after completing an interrogation about their faith, according to the Associated Press:

The first item on PennDOT’s form asks applicants to “describe your religion.” It is followed by more questions that devout followers might struggle to answer, and some that inquire about the lives of family members.

    – – -SKIP – – – –

If they lack proof of identification, yet another form must be completed before a nonphoto ID is issued. The ID is valid for four years, and the renewal process is simpler.

Going through this process is essential if those who hold religious objections to being photographed want to vote. Anyone who wants to vote must show identification in the November election.

    – – – – -SKIP – — –

    – — -THIS – – –>While many Amish and Mennonite people do not vote, those who do vote tend to vote for Republicans. But Republicans have led the charge across the U.S. to enact voter ID laws in an effort to disenfranchise groups of voters like groups, such as college students, low-income voters, and minorities. PennDOT reports that it has issued about 4,000 nonphoto IDs to Amish people, but there are about 61,000 Amish who live in the state. And it is doubtful more Amish will want to go through the arduous process to get a nonphoto ID simply to vote.
    THERE IS MORE.

    – –Fired Michigan teacher thanks Trayvon Martin’s family for recognition – —

    – – – — A suburban Detroit teacher who was allegedly fired on March 28th for helping organize an in-school fundraiser for the family of Trayvon Martin has received nationwide support in her quest to get her job back. On Wednesday, Martin’s family thanked her during a press conference following the arrest of George Zimmerman.

“We stand with Brooke Harris, the middle school teacher in Michigan who was fired,” said Rev. Jamal Bryant, who joined Martin’s family during the press conference. On Monday, Harris’s story made national headlines as she went from a seemingly anonymous teacher to another symbol in the Trayvon Martin case. She described the last few days as “crazy.”
