Thursday Afternoon Thread: The Godfather of Go-Go and the Queen of Disco – RIP

You didn’t have to be fans of either genre, but I bet you will shout out along with Chuck “gimme the bridge now!” LOL, and can there be a sexier song than “Love to Love Ya baby”?

Yeah, we lost two great ones – that’s got to be one cool party in heaven right now.

  • MsKitty

The last 6 months, starting with Heavy D, have been brutal. I feel like the soundtrack of my life is disappearing piece by piece.

RIP Chuck and Donna, you’ll both be missed for sure.

    • Alma98

That’s exactly how I feel MsKitty. I remember hearing both their songs playing on the radio as I got ready for school.

  • GN

OMG, Donna Summer died? Wow, RIP and the deepest of condolences to her loved ones.

  • crazycanuck

Just got home to hear about Donna Summer. RIP

  • itgurl_29

Donna Summer was so beautiful. So sad for her children and grandchildren.

  • Gc

Donna Summers’ music was empowering for me. May they both RIP.

  • BoomerGal

Girlfriend could really sing! Didn’t know she was battling cancer. We’re just losing icons left and right. She will be missed.

  • Alma98

Well the local media is getting in on the bash the black church tour. The Pastor of my mom’s church said they called him in the middle of the night asking how he feels about PBO supporting ssm. He hung up on them but here’s the interesting part they called his cell # which is private, church members don’t even know his number.

    • isonprize

ooooh, Alma. That’s shady. What exactly did they hope to gain? Disturbing him? Calling his private line? Were they trying to scare him?

Wow, we knew this was going to be nasty…

      • Alma98

Yes it’s getting nasty the Pastor told the congregation not to let these people use them. I want to know how in the hell they got his private number. They’re trying to pit black folks against PBO. The next thing you know they’ll be waiting outside black churches questioning the parishioners.

        • isonprize

Already happened back in 2008. Rev. Wright preached at his Philadelphia “home” church’s homecoming, every year. Reporters were hovering before and after the service. Folks gave them the side-eye and kept walking. .

          • Alma98

I meant questioning people about the president supporting ssm.

        • Town

I remember Rev. Wright came to Norfolk or Newport News (where he had family) and preached a sermon, and the local racist talk radio host said he was going to the sermon so he could find out what “they” were talking about. He comes back and reports “they” were looking at him funny and he could understand how “they” could whoop and holler over Rev. Wright because he was “very charismatic.”

No, “THEY” were looking at you funny because you’re a white dude probably dressed in a dingy t-shirt and khakis & flip flops rolling up in a black church knowing damn well you weren’t there to worship, you were there to spy.

        • Aquagranny911

Rupert Murdoch? I’m not trying to be flippant but if it was a fox affiliate I would suspect phone hacking. Those people are evil.

I would be outraged too. This is just disgusting!

          • Alma98

I’ll ask my mom which station it was.

    • Admiral_Komack

      Not until now.

      • Alma98

I meant the local media here in WI hadn’t said two blurbs about it or cared what black folks thought till this week. I edited my comment to make it clear you happy now lol.

Facebook’s Eduardo Saverin Likely Barred From Re-Entering U.S.

    Sahil Kapur- May 17, 2012, 9:01 AM

Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin’s decision to renounce his U.S. citizenship just in time to avoid a large tax payment essentially means he will not be able to re-enter the United States again, immigration experts tell TPM.

“There’s a specific provision of immigration law that says that a former citizen who officially renounces citizenship, and is determined to have renounced it for the purpose of avoiding taxation, is excludable,” said Crystal Williams, executive director of the American Immigration Lawyers Association. “So he would not be able to return to the United States if he’s found to have renounced for tax purposes.”

The provision of law isn’t usually enforced, added Williams, “however, this guy is so high profile that this is probably going to be the test case.”

Saverin’s only path back to living in the U.S., experts contend, would involve persuading the authorities that his decision was not about avoiding taxes — an argument the 30-year-old billionaire is apparently angling to make.

    • Alma98

Yes this was about not wanting to pay his taxes.

    • Daltex82

I would not let his ass back in EVER!

    • Aquagranny911

Can one of my relatives have his visa?

GOP struggles to banish ghost of Jeremiah Wright
    By Greg Sargent

In a statement, Romney campaign manager Matt Rhoades repudiates the plan being hatched by GOP operatives for an ad campaign tying Obama to Reverend Wright:

“Unlike the Obama campaign, Gov. Romney is running a campaign based on jobs and the economy, and we encourage everyone else to do the same. President Obama’s team said they would ‘kill Romney,’ and, just last week, David Axelrod referred to individuals opposing the president as ‘contract killers.’ It’s clear President Obama’s team is running a campaign of character assassination. We repudiate any efforts on our side to do so.”
And that’s good. The problem, though, is that it turns out that Romney himself attacked Obama over Wright on Sean Hannity’s show on February 7th of this year, during the GOP primary. A Democrat sends over audio, which is at the end of the post.

Hannity played Romney a quote in which Obama said: “Given the increasing diversity of America’s populations, the dangers of sectarianism are greater than ever. Whatever we once were we are no longer a Christian nation.” Romney responded, in part:

“Without question, the legal code in this country is based upon Judeo-Christian values and teachings, Biblical teachings, and for the president not to understand that a wide array of religions and a conviction that Judeo-Christian philosophy is an integral part of our foundation is really an extraordinary thing. I think again that the president takes his philosophical leanings in this regard, not from those who are ardent believers in various faiths but instead from those who would like America to be more secular. And I’m not sure which is worse, him listening to Reverend Wright or him saying that we must be a less Christian nation.”
The point here, as evidenced by Romney’s repudiation today of the GOP plan to revive Wright, is that leading Republicans know it’s not acceptable to play the race card as overtly as this. As Adam Serwer notes today, it’s basically as crass an exercise in race-baiting as portraying Obama as the “type of black man they cross the street to avoid,” and Republican leaders know this is a nonstarter, morally and politically.

At the same time, large swaths of the GOP base, and even of the conservative commentariat, are heavily invested in a deeply paranoid view of Obama that goes far beyond whether Obama sat in the pews and nodded along with Wright’s anti-American venom.

GOP leaders are very careful to declare Wright off limits, but leading Republican officials and opinionmakers have fed this broader and deeper strain of anti-Obama paranoia for literally years now, in all sorts of ways. By hinting that Obama doesn’t really wish the country well. Or by suggesting that he’s overly sympatheic towards America’s enemies. Or by failing to forcefully condemn birtherism. Or by declaring that they take Obama at his word when he says he’s a Christian. Or by hinting that he’s hostile towards faith and religion.

The quote above from Romney to Hannity captures this well. The problem isn’t just the invocation of Wright; it’s the broader message on display — that Obama harbors a secret desire to secularize the country. The invocation of Wright is just a symptom of the larger problem here.

    • Alma98

I guess Romney doesn’t want to remind the crazies that he’s a Mormon huh.

    – – –

    – – — –Banks initiated the fewest number of foreclosures since 2007 last quarter, according to new figures from the Mortgage Bankers Associations. But don’t be too quick to don the rose-colored glasses: The number of loans in foreclosure remains stubbornly high at 4.4%—down only a hair from last year’s 4.5%, in part because some states require courts to oversee foreclosures, drawing out the process.

While the numbers are still disturbingly, historically high, signs of improvement emerge when you factor in past-due loans: 11.8% of all loans are at least 30 days past due or already in foreclosure; last year, that number was 12.8%, and two years ago it was 14.7%, the Wall Street Journal reports. The drop is due almost entirely to a decline in new homeowners who are late on their payments, indicating that households are stabilizing financially.

Biden To Ohio Workers: Romney Doesn’t ‘Get Who We Are’
    Pema Levy- May 16, 2012, 3:28 PM

Mitt Romney just doesn’t get it. That’s the message Vice President Joe Biden drilled in to a crowd in eastern Ohio Wednesday, playing up his working-class roots.

“They don’t get us. They don’t get who we are,” Biden bellowed. “My mother and father dreamed as much as any rich guy dreams.”

“Absolutely,” a man in the audience volunteered.

In a passionate speech at M7 Technologies, an advanced manufacturing facility in Youngstown, Biden used his own working-class roots — his family dealt with job losses and uncertainty, he said — to connect with a crowd in one of the most economically hard-hit areas in the country.

Biden hit the basic points of the campaign’s economic message as well. Manufacturing is growing at its fastest rate since the 1990s, including 40,000 new manufacturing jobs in Ohio, Biden said. He contrasted that with examples of factories closing after they were acquired by Bain Capital, the private equity firm Mitt Romney ran.

“In the 1990s, there was a steel mill in Kansas City, Mo. It had been in business since 1888,” Biden said, according to prepared remarks. “Then Romney and his partners bought the company. Eight years later it went bankrupt.” While the workers lost their jobs, “Romney and his partners walked away with at least $12 million,” Biden said.

“Romney and his friends believe in helping those at the very top and let everyone else fend for themselves,” Biden said. That approach, Biden said, represented a return to the same philosophy that devastated Ohio during the Bush administration.

But Biden bracketed the standard stump speech with his own personal story. His father once came to his bedside to explain that he had lost his job and would have to head to Wilmington, Del., to look for more work, Biden said. He invoked the image of a parent heading up the stairs to his children’s bedrooms to relay the bad news.

Romney is a nice guy, Biden said, but “he doesn’t get what’s at the core of all this. It’s about people’s dignity.”

The Veep was on fire yesterday, and apparently many in the crowd agreed with him.

    Mike Coffman didn’t ‘misspeak’
By Steve Benen – Thu May 17, 2012 2:43 PM EDT.

Rep. Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) delivered some pretty stunning remarks at a fundraiser over the weekend, and unfortunately for him, the NBC affiliate in Denver obtained a copy of his speech.

Around the 3:20 mark, Coffman, the two-term Republican congressman, says of the president:

“I don’t know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don’t know that. But I do know this, that in his heart, he’s not an American. He’s just not an American.”

Asked for an explanation, the congressman issued a statement that “I misspoke and I apologize.”

That doesn’t work. Sure, everyone misspeaks from time to time, especially in public affairs. Someone might accidentally say Iraq, when they meant Iran. Someone meant to say 47, but they said 57. They’re just verbal slipups, and they’re hardly worth getting excited about.

But it’s not an example of “misspeaking” when someone says, “I don’t know whether Barack Obama was born in the United States of America. I don’t know that. But I do know this, that in his heart, he’s not an American. He’s just not an American.” It’s not like this just slipped out accidentally.

Coffman added in his written explanation, “I don’t believe the president shares my belief in American Exceptionalism. His policies reflect a philosophy that America is but one nation among many equals.”

For the record, Obama has emphasized his support for the principles of “American exceptionalism” rather explicitly, a fact more than a few observers acknowledged, even on the right.

Ricketts’ anti-Obama campaign could cripple plan to rebuild Wrigley; Rahm reacts

Did the Ricketts family just knee-cap its own plan to rebuild Wrigley Field with a healthy dose of Chicago taxpayer cash?

My phone has been ringing with just that question this morning in the wake of a stunning New York Times story about how a new super PAC headed by Joe Ricketts, patriarch of the Chicago Cubs’ owning family, is pondering a big, especially nasty ad campaign against President Barack Obama this fall.

    Read more: http://www.chicagobusiness.com/article/20120517/BLOGS02/120519836/ricketts-anti-obama-campaign-could-cripple-plan-to-rebuild-wrigley-rahm-reacts#ixzz1v9ohBcQL

    • Asked whether the flap will affect the Wrigley rebuild, Mr. Emanuel replied, “I’ll have some conversations on that later — comments, rather.”

Uh, oh! Rahm finna do a pirouette all over the Ricketts!

did you really think that folks – IN CHICAGO – are gonna give your ass 100 million bucks

HEADLINE: Rahm Emanuel ‘livid,’ not returning calls from Ricketts family.

// Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is not returning calls from the Ricketts family and is “livid” over a New York Times report that Joe Ricketts commissioned a proposal for a multimillion-dollar ad campaign linking President Obama to the president’s former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, according to an Emanuel aide. Joe Ricketts’s children, which include Obama bundler Laura Ricketts, bought the Chicago Cubs in 2009 and have been in talks with the city about renovating the team’s 98-year-old stadium, Wrigley Field.

The aide also said Emanuel, who is Obama’s former chief of staff, has cut off communication with the family.
“The Ricketts have tried to contact the mayor, but he’s said that he does not want to talk with them today, tomorrow or anytime soon,” the aide said.

Mitt rebukes Ricketts PAC, stands by own comments on Wright

    5/17/12 3:20 PM EDT

Via POLITICO’s Juana Summers, Mitt Romney’s latest comments in the Jeremiah Wright back-and-forth:

“I want to make it very clear, I repudiate that effort. I think it’s the wrong course for a PAC or a campaign. I hope that our campaigns can respectively be about the futures and about issues and about a vision for America,” Romney told reporters Thursday. “I’ve been disappointed in the president’s campaign to date, which has been focused on character assassination. I just think that we’re wiser to talk about the issues of the day, what we do to get America working again, talk about our respective records.” …

Romney was also questioned about a February appearance on Sean Hannity’s radio show in which he brought up Wright himself during the GOP primary, but said he was unfamiliar with the specific quote.

“I’m actually — I’m not familiar with precisely, exactly what I said. But I stand by what I said, whatever it was. And with regards to — I’ll go back and take a look at what was said there,” he said.

Michelle Obama: Province in Italy dedicates 1,400-year-old olive tree to first lady

Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move initiative has inspired a province in Italy to dedicated a 1,400-year-old olive tree to the first lady. The ancient breed known as “The Queen” from the province of Lecce is seen as a fitting symbol for Michelle, because her promotion of fitness mirrors the health benefits of what many call the Mediterranean diet. Olive oil is a main component of this style of eating, which encompasses the food cultures of countries such as Italy.

“The first lady has launched the ‘Let’s Move’ campaign for a healthier lifestyle and diet … in perfect harmony with the requirements of a Mediterranean diet,” the province said, as reported by the AFP news service.

    – – —JP Morgan’s $2 billion trading debacle has grown into a $3 billion trading debacle, as the White House is going on offense to push regulators to craft a stronger version of the Volcker Rule, which is meant to rein in banks’ risky trading. Even House Republicans have backed off their deregulatory zeal for the moment, in the wake of JP Morgan’s mess.

    – – – -THIS- – – ->Presumptive 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, however, said that the loss is simply “the way America works,” and said that it doesn’t make the case for enhancing any regulations:

In his first direct comments on the bank’s missteps, Romney said, “I would not rush to pass new legislation or new regulation.” […]

“This was not a loss to the taxpayers of America; this was a loss to shareholders and owners of JPMorgan and that’s the way America works,” he said. “The $2 billion JPMorgan lost, someone else gained.” […]

    – – – -SKIP- – –

“My own view is that if a large bank gets in difficulty, why, it can fail,” he said. “There’s no reason why the shareholders or bondholders of a bank can’t lose their funds if a bank were to get in trouble.” ,/i>

Encounter between George Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin was ‘avoidable,’ Sanford cops said in report

JACKSONVILLE – Never before seen evidence in the case against George Zimmerman shows that Sanford Police believed the encounter between Zimmerman and Trayvon Martin was “ultimately avoidable by Zimmerman, if Zimmerman had remained in his vehicle and awaited the arrival of law enforcement,” according to hundreds of pages of evidence in the case released this afternoon.

When does the killer go to trial? Are we just going to keep perpetually trying it by the media? How will they ever get a jury pool that the defense won’t claim is “tainted” Defense will be crying for a change of venue to Pluto if this keeps up. • I thought there were no traces of drugs in Trayvon’s body. Now here they come with this? And why wasn’t Zimmerman tested for drugs and/or alcohol?

Autopsy: Evidence of marijuana found in Trayvon Martin’s urine and blood

Article by: MIKE SCHNEIDER and KYLE HIGHTOWER , Associated Press
    Updated: May 17, 2012 – 5:29 PM

ORLANDO, Fla. – Medical examiners found evidence of marijuana in Trayvon Martin’s system after he was fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer, an autopsy report released Thursday shows.

Also included in a massive release of evidence was an investigator’s recommendation to prosecutors that suspect George Zimmerman be arrested on manslaughter charges. The investigator, who was on the scene after the shooting, wrote on March 13 that the confrontation should have been avoided. That report came nearly a month before Zimmerman was arrested.

The package of documents, photos and video was turned over by prosecutors to defense attorneys days before it was released to the media.

The autopsy says medical examiners found THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, when they tested Martin’s blood and urine. A police report shows Martin had been shot once in the chest and had been pronounced dead at the scene.

Trayvon was suspended from school for having a empty bag with marijuana traces – that weed come have been in his system from that…and weed is HARDLY the drug, no matter what the circumstance, that makes one aggressive..so anyone attempting to use that as “proof” of Trayvon running up on Zimmerman can go sit down with that mess.

Zimmerman was the one on prescription drugs that would have more of an effect on his physical and mental state – but of course he wasn’t tested.

      • But the media will forget about Zimmerman’s prescription drug usage and focus on the THC.

Did anyone see ABC News’ report on this? I read on Twitter that they said drugs was found in Trayvon’s system, which gives the impression that he was an addict. Is ABC on the Koch Brothers’ payroll?

        • Aquagranny911

What about the drugs in Zimmerman’s system? Any tests for that? Might he have been taking steroids perhaps?

Inquiring minds really want to know about Zimmerman’s habits & drug use……..

        • Miranda

ABC, CBS and the AP all have glaring headlines of “drugs” found in Trayvon’s system. They are also claiming that a freaking scar on ONE knuckle is proof of Zimmerman’s account. It is so fucking ridiculous. Listening to Zimmerman’s 911 calls compared to his voice in court…its clear he sounds entirely different and his voice on the 911 calls suggest something in HIS system that would impair his damn judgement – but lets demonize the dead child. I hate these damn people.

    • trose1

The young man could have been high on crack , meth , cocaine, and any other type of drug. Intoxicated on drugs does not give anyone the right to kill u in cold blood.

      • Bri

How this dead child is being treated is deplorable, and straight up racism. Nobody in the media wants to call it is, which is racism. Too many in the black MSM, are too busy trying to fit in with the white MSM, so they beat around the bush, or say crap like Melissa Harris-Perry, that racism is complex, and difficult to determine, which is pure BS. I

    • Aquagranny911

Oh Fig this sorry BS! He was a teen aged boy. THC stays in the system for weeks after use because it lays up in the fat cells. It isn’t quickly excreted like alcohol & some other drugs. He could have toked some reefer 3 weeks before he was shot. This so called “evidence” does not make him some kind of hard core druggie.

This is really pissing me off.

      • Aquagranny911

I have to add that there is actually a scale for measuring when marijuana was most recently used. It’s measured by ppm of THC in urine or blood. A good technician can usually tell you just when you last had a puff or huff.

I would say don’t ask but the reason I know this was that I did counseling at one time for people on probation or deferment who were routinely drug tested by order of the court.

    miranda – — –A somewhat positive FAUX NOISE POLL??? — –

    – – – – –Fox Poll: Strong Plurality Prefer An Obama Supreme Court To A Romney Supreme Court – – —

    – — – –A Fox News poll released yesterday finds that voters would rather have President Obama pick the next Supreme Court justice than Republican candidate Mitt Romney by a 46 to 38 percent margin. Last November, Romney promised that, if elected, he would model his Supreme Court nominees after Chief Justice Roberts and Justices Scalia, Thomas and Alito, all of whom voted give wealthy corporations a nearly unlimited power to try to buy elections in Citizens United. By contrast, Justice Sotomayor, who was the only Obama appointee on the Court when Citizens United was decided, dissented from that decision. And Citizens United is far from the only example of a case where all four of Romney’s model justices voted to give corporate interest groups sweeping immunity from the law.

    – – – –May 17, 1954 | Supreme Court Declares School Segregation Unconstitutional in Brown v. Board of Education —-

    – — –On May 17, 1954, the Supreme Court issued its landmark Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka ruling, which declared that racially segregated public schools were inherently unequal.

The decision overturned the 1896 Supreme Court case Plessy v. Ferguson, in which the court ruled that segregation laws were constitutional if equal facilities were provided to whites and blacks. Segregation was therefore justified under the doctrine “separate but equal,” but in few cases were segregated facilities actually equal. The disparity was particularly clear in public schools, where the amount of financing and the standard of education for all-black schools lagged far behind all-white schools.

In 1951, the NAACP recruited families from Topeka, Kan., to take part in a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of school segregation. The named plaintiff, Oliver Brown, had a daughter who was forced to take a bus to an all-black school rather than attend the all-white school blocks from her house. The case was combined with similar cases from other parts of the country and argued before the Supreme Court by a team of NAACP lawyers headed by the future justice Thurgood Marshall.

    – – —Martin: GOP’s Rev. Wright Plan Could Lead to ‘Mormonism on the Table’ (Video) – – –

    – – – –OK, let’s play some tit for tat.

On Thursday, CNN’s Roland Martin said that a plan by the right-wing to bring up Barack Obama’s past association with Jeremiah Wright could lead to others “putting Mormonism on the table.”

Specifically, the New York Times reported on a proposal by a GOP Super PAC sponsored by billionaire Joe Ricketts that would run commercials tying Obama to Wright, whose sermons created perhaps his biggest campaign headache in 2008. Mitt Romney, on the other hand called it the “wrong course.”

Martin didn’t waste any words. He called the proposal/idea a “ridiculous conversation,” and said it wouldn’t work. He also warned that people on the other side of the aisle might be inclined to bring up the issue of Romney’s faith if the plan were followed through.

“If Ricketts wants to do that, if the GOP they want to do that, you’re now putting Mormonism on the table,” Martin said. “You’re now putting on the table how African Americans were treated by the Mormon religion. I don’t think Mitt Romney really wants to have that conversation, considering he was an elder and his dad was an elder, and they really did not embrace African Americans. It is a ridiculous conversation.”
