  • US court strikes down voter-approved ban on affirmative action in Michigan
Michigan’s 2006 ban on affirmative action in college, hiring thrown out of court
Published On: Nov 15 2012 02:43:01 PM EST

A federal appeals court has thrown out Michigan’s voter-approved ban on affirmative action in college admissions and public hiring.

The court says the 2006 amendment to the Michigan Constitution is illegal because it presents an extraordinary burden to opponents who would have to mount their own long, expensive campaign to protect affirmative action.

The Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati said Thursday that the burden undermines a federal right that all citizens “have equal access to the tools of political change.”

  • REPORT: David Petraeus Talked Paula Broadwell Out Of A North Carolina Senate Run
    Walter Hickey | Nov. 15, 2012, 1:47 PM

[…] Gellman reports that Broadwell was approached by “Republican moneymen” about running for a U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina.

The race would presumably be against Democrat Kay Hagan, who is up for re-election in 2014.

Broadwell considered the opportunity. But according to the report, she brought up the possibility with Petraeus, who shot it down:

Petraeus, she said in an irritated tone, rejected the idea out of hand. What was her position, he asked, on abortion? Climate change? Gun control? Gay marriage? Tax cuts? Social Security vouchers? Her answers, he told her, would not fit either party, and she should not sell herself out.

      • annvic

I wonder what exactly was Karl trying to do there. Was he trying to set both of them up by having Petraeus’ side piece run for public office? Or was he just gunning to expose Petraeus? Was he trying to steal Paula away by putting her under his influence in the arena of political office? Was he trying to get her into a Senate seat in order to keep her leaking self away from the CIA’s business? I really want to know what was going on there.

Benghazi hearing turns ugly: Republicans accuse Obama of lying, Dems fire back
    By NBC’s CarrollAnn Mears

“Barack Obama was no more responsible for what happened in Benghazi than George Bush was for Sept. 11th or Ronald Reagan was for the blowing up of U.S. Marines in Beirut,” Rep. Eliot Engle (D-NY) said.

“The stench of hypocrisy that hangs over this city today emanates from this room,” Ackerman said. “I’ve listened to my colleagues talk about the President of the United States and others in the administration using [the] terms ‘deliberate’, ‘lies’, ‘unmitigated gall’, ‘malfeasance,’ which is malicious and knowing evil-doing, ‘disgust’, ‘coverups’.”

He continued, “If you want to know who is responsible in this town, buy yourself a mirror!”

Ackerman went on to say that Republicans had “the audacity to come here” when the administration requested, for worldwide security, “$440 million more than you guys wanted to provide. And the answer is that you damn didn’t provide it! You REDUCED what the administration asked for to protect these people. Ask not who the guilty party is, it’s you! It is us. It is this committee, and the things that we insist that we need have to cost money.”

He added, “Could you tell me which of my colleagues on this committee was as bodacious in their insistence that we provide more money for American security in the State Department budget. I would appreciate it.”

Ackerman then asked them to raise their hands and gave them a count of five to do so. None did.

    – — –Fox News Kicks Off New Jobs Number Conspiracy– – —

    – – – –The Labor Department today announced that 439,000 workers filed for initial jobless claims last week, a large jump from the previous week. The increase is largely attributable to Hurricane Sandy. As the Associated Press explained, “applications increased by 78,000 because a large number of applications were filed in states damaged by the storm. People can claim unemployment benefits if their workplaces close and they don’t get paid.” Economists expect the storm to distort economic data for at least a few more weeks.

However, Fox News and other conservatives have a different explanation More cooking of the books by the Obama administration.– – When the unemployment rate dropped in September, conservatives alleged a conspiracy on the part of the Labor Department to aid Obama’s re-election. Fox News, along with Gov. Scott Walker (R-WI), were once again alleging a conspiracy after the latest numbers were released today:

    – FOX NEWS’ ERIC BOLLING: “The Department of Labor is getting sketchier and sketchier with each one of these numbers.”

    – FOX NEWS’ GRETCHEN CARLSON: “A lot of people are going to be raising some eyebrows pretty high today that, after the election, we go up to this whopping number of 439,000.”

    – GOV. SCOTT WALKER (R-WI): “Well, real concerns about the numbers. Certainly, some will question the timing.“

John McCain: “I have the right as a senator to have no comment and who the hell are you to tell me I can or not?”

    From CNN:
(CNN) – When CNN approached McCain in a Capitol hallway Thursday morning, the senator refused to comment about why he missed the briefing, which was conducted by top diplomatic, military and counter-terrorism officials. Instead, McCain got testy when pressed to say why he wasn’t there.

“I have no comment about my schedule and I’m not going to comment on how I spend my time to the media,” McCain said.

Asked why he wouldn’t comment, McCain grew agitated: “Because I have the right as a senator to have no comment and who the hell are you to tell me I can or not?… I’m upset that you keep badgering me.”

He was probably trying to set up a reason for him to be on with bestie Schieffer this week but went a step too far. He’s struggling to stay relevant, knowing that he faces a tough battle in his next primary so he has to step up disrespecting the President along with parroting the same conspiracy as the fringe crowd. • Atlantic City mayor calls Chris Christie ‘racially insensitive’
by Abdul Sada | November 15, 2012 at 3:24 PM

Atlantic City mayor Lorenzo Langford recently slammed New Jersey governor Chris Christie, calling him “petty,” “racially insensitive,” and “myopic” because he allegedly avoided his city during his tour of storm-damaged New Jersey.alongside President Barack Obama.

In an interview with the Daily News, Langford said, “The White House called and said they were coming to Atlantic City, and I think the governor changed that and decided to go to Brigantine instead … that shows how petty he is, number one. And racially insensitive, number two. And politically myopic, number three.”

Langford has been at the receiving end of criticism from Christie because he allegedly disobeyed direct orders, and put lives at risk by not forcing all of Atlantic City residents to evacuate before Sandy hit.

  • Rep. Clyburn put McCain and Graham on notice!

Clyburn, speaking Wednesday night on MSNBC’s “Hardball,” took it a step further, saying that McCain and Graham are messing with a family friend.

“I have a real, real problem with my senior senators trying to make her a scapegoat in this,” Clyburn said. “Susan Rice’s roots are in Florence, South Carolina… Her father, Emmett, who was born there in Florence, didn’t leave there until he was 16 years old… (he and) I have been a close friend of his over the years. I’m a close friend of Susan Rice.”
“I think it’s absolutely a shame for this young lady, whose roots are deep in South Carolina soil, to get sullied like this by my senior senator, who I consider a good friend,” Clyburn continued.

When “Hardball” host Chris Matthews asked why McCain and Graham are treating Rice “like she’s somebody to punch,” Clyburn responded: “That’s exactly right. This is a young African-American woman, I’m going to say.”

“And this is the kind of stuff that happened to Colin Powell,” Clyburn said, referring to incorrect intelligence information about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq that the former Secretary of State received and later conveyed to the United Nations as justification wage war against Saddam Hussein’s regime. “He went to the United Nations with information that we found out later was flawed. It was not his fault then…and it’s not Susan Rice’s fault.”

    AP Intelligence Writer / November 15, 2012

WASHINGTON (AP) — The CIA is opening an ‘‘exploratory’’ investigation into the general conduct of ex-CIA director David Petraeus, who resigned last week after acknowledging an affair.

CIA spokesman Preston Golson says the investigation by the CIA’s inspector general ‘‘doesn’t presuppose any particular outcome.’’

After carefully guarding the names of witnesses and other sensitive items of the case, lead prosecutor Bernie de la Rionda (pictured) made a huge mistake in leaking names of a dozen witnesses, which could derail the case altogether, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

De la Rionda reportedly had a slip of the mind when delivering a new set of evidence on November 8th, which included witness names and other such information held from the public. This time, however, the witness names were placed in the public file, according to reports.

    – – — New York, NY
    Thursday, November 15, 2012

President Obama tours areas of New York City impacted by Hurricane Sandy, including Far Rockaway, the Queens community where residents still lack electrical power over two weeks after the storm swept up the Northeast coast.

Many of the complaints have been directed towards the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), which provides electrical service to the area.

He delivered a statement after viewing some of the damage by helicopter and meeting with volunteers and families who were affected by the storm. He was joined by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (I) and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D).

Post Election Romney and Bain Face a Federal Corruption and Perjury Hearing

    By: RmuseNovember 15th, 2012

It is absolutely true that Romney was looking forward to cutting his own tax liability to zero, privatizing the federal government, handing the Social Security Trust to Wall Street, and waging perpetual war, but with a plethora of investigations and allegations of corruption into his finances on the horizon, appointing a friendly Attorney General was certainly a primary reason for seeking the presidency. To date, Romney’s legal troubles include fallacious FEC and SEC disclosures, an investigation into him and his son’s connection to an $8.5 billion Ponzi scheme, and concealing over $15 million from the auto-bailout, and now his surrogate’s malfeasance and perjury in the eToys bankruptcy case.

Exactly ten days ago, this column reported on a Delaware bankruptcy court’s failure to enter an Emergency Motion into the public docket that included Bain Capital and Romney operative’s perjury and corruption in the eToys bankruptcy case. At the time it appeared the judge was protecting Romney and Bain Capital by suppressing the Motion in expectation he would win the election and have the Motion tossed out of court leading to the question; “is Romney’s main impetus for seeking the White House to appoint an Attorney General who will guarantee that all charges against him will go away?” Well now that he lost the election, it appears the allegation had merit because on November 7, the day after his crushing defeat, the Delaware bankruptcy court judge entered the motion into the public docket and scheduled a hearing for December 4, 2012; all on the same day.

Could be that karma thing again:)

    – –Maine GOP Chair Suspicious of ‘Dozens of Black Voters’ [‘Nobody in town knows anyone who’s black,’ Charlie Webster protests] – – –

    – – — Maine GOP chair Charlie Webster thinks his state is rife with voter fraud—and he has evidence. “In some parts of rural Maine, there were dozens, dozens of black people who came in and voted on Election Day,” Webster told WCSH 6. “Everybody has the right to vote, but nobody in town knows anyone who’s black. How did that happen? I don’t know. We’re going to find out. I think it’s a problem.” Pressed as to where this was occurring, Webster would only say, “several rural Maine towns.”

The comment has raised an uproar, with one GOP strategist saying it “should be cause for immediate resignation,” the Portland Press Herald reports. (Webster’s term expires at month’s end.) But Webster stands by his statement: “I’m not talking about 15 or 20. I’m talking about hundreds,” he told the paper. “Maybe I shouldn’t have said these voters were black, but anyone who suggests I have a bias toward any race or group, frankly, that’s sleazy.”

    – – —Amidst financial crises and unprecedented public school budget cuts, Brooklyn Castle takes an intimate look at the challenges and triumphs facing members of a junior high school’s champion chess team. – –

    — —-This isn’t your ordinary chess club. The documentary “Brooklyn Castle” showcases a collection of young chess players who aren’t teased and ridiculed by jocks in their junior high school. To the contrary, they are the jocks.

I.S. 318 is an inner-city junior high school nestled in Brooklyn, New York. While it’s surrounded by an area beset with poverty, it births several great minds out of a game of chess. Through this game, players learn strategy and retaliation. And through the tournaments, they learn glory, satisfaction, defeat and heartbreak.

“In 2009, we decided to spend a year with (I.S. 318),” director/producer Katie Dellamaggiore said in a recent session with entertainment reporters. “I read an article about a high school chess team in New York Times in 2007. It turns out that 318 was sending a lot of their junior high school kids to this high school. While 318 hadn’t been getting a lot of attention, they won more national championships than any other school in the country.” – —

    — – –Democrat to GOP in Benghazi Hearing ‘If you want to know who is responsible in this town, buy yourself a mirror!’ – –

    – – —Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) has apparently had enough of the Republican games.

A House Foreign Affairs hearing went wild today, with Republicans accusing Obama of being worse than Watergate over their thus far fictional Benghazi conspiracies. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) said the President had “lied”. Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) joined Rohrabacher in accusing Obama of lying (still no proof or even a valid reason for this accusation). Other Republicans spent their time orating instead of asking questions of the witness, suggesting that this is really more about manufacturing a narrative than getting to the truth.

And then Rep. Gary Ackerman (D-NY) exploded:

Ackerman said, “The stench of hypocrisy that hangs over this city today emanates from this room. I’ve listened to my colleagues talk about the President of the United States and others in the administration using [the] terms ‘deliberate’, ‘lies’, ‘unmitigated gall’, ‘malfeasance,’ which is malicious and knowing evil-doing, ‘disgust’, ‘coverups’. If you want to know who is responsible in this town, buy yourself a mirror!”
