Issa to Cummings at testy IRS hearing: You’re acting like a ‘little boy’
    Aliyah Frumin
    2:31 PM on 07/18/2013

The latest hearing on the Internal Revenue Services’ targeting of conservative groups got ugly on Thursday, with House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa accusing Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of acting like a “little boy.”

It started with Cummings criticizing Issa for suggesting the tax agency’s actions were being carried out at the White House. Cummings and Issa have been dueling over the matter all summer.

Attack on boy operating lemonade stand investigated as possible hate crime
By Justin Jouvenal, Thursday, July 18, 4:13 PM

A bizarre attack on a 12-year-old boy operating a lemonade stand in Fairfax County is being investigated as a possible hate crime, according to a search warrant filed in Fairfax County court.

The boy and a sibling had set up the stand in the courtyard of the Camden Monument Place Apartments in the 12000 block of Monument Drive on July 6 when a person wearing a full-body leotard decorated with a design of the internal human anatomy exited one of the complex’s buildings about 6:30 p.m., the warrant said. The outfit concealed the person’s identity.

The person approached the stand holding a red balloon, prompting the 12-year-old to say “do not throw that at me,” according to the warrant.

The person then threw the balloon at the boy, hitting him in the thigh, the search warrant said. The person then retreated back into the same building he left. The boy told investigators he smelled of urine after the attack.

A few minutes later, the boy said he heard a male voice coming from the second or third floor of the same building, yelling, “Go back to Africa you [expletives]! It was only piss.”

Another witness confirmed the boy’s account of events, according to the search warrant.

      • Aquagranny911

I was in the Orlando Sentinel Chat Room on Saturday morning while we waited for the verdict. One of the chatters said that he had a friend who KNEW where they stood on the verdict and that by 2:30 they would have reached it. He was ADAMANT about it. The fact that this story outlines a timeline that falls right in line with that chatter’s words is to much to be a coincidence…

Howard Dean even admitted that Clinton shouldn’t expect a clear field is she decides to run. No one on either side who has run for president has ever had a clear field. Bush Sr. in 1988 running as the heir to the Reagan legacy almost lost to Bob Dole and he faced a field of contenders. Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton, Barack Obama have all faced challenges. I think Eisenhower was an exception because both parties were trying to recruit him as a nominee and the republicans were desperate because they lost several general elections back to back.

Justice Department Amps Up Their Civil Rights Investigation of George Zimmerman

[....]The old evidence will form the basis of the federal review, but also any evidence not used at trial could also be valuable to federal investigators. Justice wants to see all the evidence, not just what was admitted into the trial. The point is that George Zimmerman is far from home free. The federal government is going to take their time investigating him for potential civil rights violations.

Their request for all of the evidence from the Sanford investigation
means that the federal investigation is picking up steam. This doesn’t mean that it is a slam dunk that Zimmerman will be charged with the federal crime of violating Martin’s civil rights, but it is hard to imagine how the following of and eventual shooting of a 17 year boy who was committing no crime did not involve some type of civil rights
violation.[....] Zimmerman wasn’t a law enforcement officer. Trayvon Martin was committing no crime, and Zimmerman started the confrontation.

    ————————
Sequestered Zimmerman trial jurors had alone time with family during trial

SANFORD, Fla. — The six women who acquitted George Zimmerman in Trayvon Martin’s killing were sequestered during the trial, but Channel 9 learned those jurors were allowed hours of time alone with friends and family.

Channel 9′s Kathi Belich confirmed the jurors were left unsupervised with guests at times, which WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said is more than enough time for a member to have said something that could have influenced a juror and possibly impacted the verdict.

    more here: http://www.wftv.com/news/news/local/zimmerman-trial-jurors-had-alone-time-family-durin/nYwNG/

    • CamilleCamille

I read that. And they were asked to sign an agreement during their weekend visits that they would not discuss the case. LOL.

      As if.

This version of sequestration as done with the jurors in this case has to be the biggest joke ever.

      • Miranda

Somebody’s gonna crack….somebody’s gonna break down and expose this sham of a verdict.

          • goldenstar

This. There is a reason that this juror has not joined the circus.

        • annvic

My money is on the juror who held out last and then caved (I believe it was the non-white juror). As what she was complicit in becomes more and more obvious, the guilt is gonna eat her alive.

          • goldenstar

Not sure that what happened was an exercise in complicit behavior. She may have been bullied and harassed. There’s all kinds of stuff that went on with that jury and it’s not clear that this is about caving nor guilt. I think that the heat was on and it may not have been too kosher…..

    • trose1

Yet people act like what we witnessed was fair. We must accept the verdict. That was a sham trial.

    • creolechild

“Channel 9 has not heard of any evidence that suggest juror B37 or any other juror did anything wrong during the trial.”

Bestowing upon these jurors more benefit of the doubt than Trayvon was ever given…before or after his death. And they STILL can’t understand why people are upset about this trial.

Asked about the conduct of Zimmerman’s attorneys, Sybrina Fulton said “it just seemed like Trayvon was on trial. They put the responsibility on the teenager, rather than on the adult, George Zimmerman,” she said. And regarding the verdict, she added: “wow, you can get away with murder. So now, our kids are targets.”

Tracy Martin said he “broke down” following the verdict, adding that he felt that the jurors and “some of the Sanford police” didn’t take Martin’s death seriously. “His life’s value, just didn’t mean anything to them,” he said.

Regarding the jury, Martin said: they were “not looking through the eyes of an African-American parent. They don’t know what it’s like to be an African-American.”

The difference he said, is that as black parents, “we understand that society is cruel.”

  • CamilleCamille

I was so furious and offended when I read ex President Jimmy Carter’s opinion on the jury verdict in the Zimmerman case–

I haven’t been able to read through the blog for the various responses to it, but suffice it to say that it was a completely unnecessary kick in the gut. Sometimes it’s ok to just not say anything — especially in a matter such as this — and as a former president who doesn’t even have to opine or chime in on anything.

The funny thing is that had I had a moment a few days ago, I was actually going to make a comment about how upsetting it’s been to watch President Obama endlessly fete, go to great lengths to accommodate and elevate both Bushes and the Clintons, while practically ignoring the Carters who endorsed and worked for him in 2008 and 2012 and spoke up on his behalf again and again when others didn’t or wouldn’t-

I can imagine how incredibly upsetting and disappointing it must be to watch as George H.W Bush – a fellow one term president – is constantly kowtowed to and praised as a “good and kind” man and even as the one who instilled the culture of service in our fellow countrymen — when that is not necessarily true–

I can imagine how incredibly upsetting it must be to watch as the Bushes and Clintons who never really thought much of this president in the first place and actually very publicly demeaned him, worked against him and endorsed his opponents in both elections, have been sucked up to and celebrated over and over again – while the one guy who came out with his entire family to support this president and to speak up when everyone refused to call out the blatant racism that drove his opponents and attackers, has been all but ignored and diminished as if he too were not a former president – and of the same party by the way – and deserving of the same, if not more respect–

I cannot however imagine or understand being so upset that I let a small and petty spirit overtake a greatness that should be —

A petty spirit that now takes out an understandable disappointment and infuriation at President Obama on young Trayvon Martin–

    • jziglar

I don’t think the President is doing anything out of the ordinary when it comes to dealing with the Bushes and Clinton’s. Many presidents have attended formal events with their predecessors.

At the end of the day successful politicians have thick skin and know how to play the game and the Obama’s have that skill.

      • CamilleCamille

Sorry, but Jimmy Carter as a living former president — and of the current president’s own party no less– is as deserving of these constant gush-fests and honors bestowed on his fellow ex-presidents and their wives-

And my fury at him for his comment on the Zimmerman verdict aside, he is an infinitely more caring and superior human being than either of the Bushes or Bill Clinton–

This is a former president who has eschewed the very compromising greed-driven, pocket-lining lecture circuit perfected by Bill Clinton – and who has to little fanfare done tangibly more in service to humanity than all of the Bushes and Clintons combined–

That he is treated so disrespectfully and like an outcast by even President Obama, has not only been upsetting, but quite disconcerting-

The caricaturing of Jimmy Carter is only similar to that which is now been insidiously done to Joe Biden –

And that the Democratic Party would not only allow it, but by the response and various actions of some of the most important Democrats in the country, continue to actively validate, perpetuate and encourage this very insulting, diminishing and dismissive narrative, is simply appalling and completely unacceptable–

        • annvic

Actually Jimmy Carter got a rather sizable chunk of time devoted to him, his legacy, and his good works at the 2012 Democratic Covention. In fact, I remember Obama doing quite a bit of speaking on Jimmy Carter’s accomplishments during the 2008 campaign and really was the first Democratic Presidential candidate to embrace him. President Obama is clearly not here for the Clintons; all of his dealings with them are business or Dem. party related. As for the Bushes, as far as I can tell, he only deals with Sr. Bush when dealing with his foundations and the Africa meeting with Jr. Bush is the first time they’ve been together since Inaguration day 2009. I get not liking how JImmy Carter is treated by the Dem Party, but that is on the Dem Party, not President Obama. Seeing as how the Clintonite Dems view Jimmy as a limp-spined failure who destroyed the Democractic Party and used his term as inspiration to drag the Dem party as far to the right as they could in the name of victory, and the uber-liberal Dems worship Carter’s one term as the epitome of liberal martyrdom and act like the man died once he left office lest they have to acknowledge his accomplishments and have their belief in failure as the only acceptable success be destroyed by the truth, it’s unlikely that the man will ever get his due.

          • CamilleCamille

“–Actually Jimmy Carter got a rather sizable chunk of time devoted to him, his legacy, and his good works at the 2012 Democratic Convention.–”

Actually, no he didn’t. He got exactly a 7 minutes or so of non-primetime speaking slot that was relegated to pretty much filler time–

Truth be told, I hardly remember President Obama really ever talking up Jimmy Carter — and I paid attention – he did however acknowledge him after he endorsed him–

            5000th Point of Lights award–

            Really?

Tell me nobody at the White House can find some Habitat for Humanity anniversary event to provide a reason to also fete the Carters and their hard work?

The entire Bush family has been back to this White House more times than I care to count – and effusively applauded as if individually or as a family, they’ve really been in any way good for this country–

Jeb and Bush senior alone, have together had private visits with President Obama on several occasions – and President Obama has asked to speak at several Bush senior events including the one he participated in with Defense Sec. Gate at that Texas University. The entire extended Bush family was feted to lunch and loads of praise at the unveiling of George and Laura’s portraits and celebrated again at the opening of their library–

That the younger Bush has opted to more or less disappear from the deservedly scorching spotlight does not mean that his family have not for some strange reason been treated to such undeserved elevation–

          • jziglar

The reason Jeb and Bush Sr. showed up for a few minutes was because of the yearly alfalfa dinner in D.C. And other presidents and their predecessors have heaped praise during portrait ceremonies and library openings.

          • CamilleCamille

            Sorry Jziglar — not true–

And I’ve watched and followed very closely as I probably suppose you assume you have too-

Sadly I come away with an entirely different sense of things –

            And remain completely unconvinced –

          • jziglar

Wait so are you telling me that Reagan said nothing positive about Carter during his portrait and library opening ? Carter and Ford never had a good respectful relationship ? Clinton never praised Ford during the medal of freedom ceremony ?

I follow politics intensely and all of the examples I listed are true. And it’s true that former presidents are mostly respectful to one another during these type of events. It’s like you think the President is kissing up to people when he isn’t. I think some who follow politics take these things to seriously.

          • CamilleCamille

            You’re deliberately over-simplifying stuff–

And you also consistently seem to strangely leave out Jimmy Carter from these your groupings of “presidents” entitled to “respectful relationships” and those “routine events” you reference–

        • jziglar

I agree with many points you made but I don’t see the Obama’s disrespecting Jimmy Carter. Jimmy Carter has never been fond of the formal / royalty like presidential events even when he was president. So maybe he has decided to keep a more low profile. The President has said plenty of nice things about the Carters so i don’t see how he is being disrespectful.

Like annvic said this is the business of being president and the Obama’s have no love for the Clintons or Bushes. It’s called playing politics.

Does anyone know why some labor leaders are upset about the employer mandate delay ? I know the right wingers are playing it up. (like they care about working people)

    • Aquagranny911

Those “labor leaders” may be far left emufrogs. The employer mandate delay is not going to stop employees from having access to affordable insurance. All the delay does is give business a little more time to get all their ducks in a row for offering health insurance before they have to pay penalties for uncovered workers or not offering health insurance to their workers.

This is a boon, especially for small business who are still trying to sort it all out. People still will be able to get affordable health care on the exchanges with tax subsidy if they need it.

IMO, this is one more step to universal health care & taking it away from employers who kept people trapped in their jobs because of a need for health insurance.

Spandan at TPV has written a lot on this issue. You might check his blog. He wrote a diary recently that explains it way better than I can.

    Joyful crowds celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday – - -
—- – -PRETORIA, South Africa — The singing washed like waves over the crowd gathered Thursday, Mandela Day, to celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 95th birthday outside the Pretoria hospital where he is being treated.
Wave after musical wave rang out, as choirs, political groups, schoolchildren and onlookers arrived one after another, dancing, gyrating and laughing, each with their own loud musical tribute to the man they see as the one who brought them freedom.

And it wouldn’t have been South Africa without the deafening vuvuzelas, blown at full blast, to wish Mandela back home.

[PHOTOS: Worldwide celebrations for Nelson Mandela's 95th birthday]

Crowds thronged the wall of tribute outside the hospital, which sprang up spontaneously soon after Mandela was admitted with a lung infection on June 8. Since then, the heaps of flowers, artwork, posters and written tributes have spread along the wall and spilled down a nearby hill.

Hopes rose Wednesday evening when Mandela’s daughter, Zindzi Mandela, told British television that Mandela’s health had improved dramatically and that he might return home “any time soon.”
Mandela’s family was planning to gather to celebrate his birthday inside the hospital.

I’m asking because it happened to me. I use to visit a blog called Pandagon some how the topic of the comment section turn to Emmitt Till. One of the people in the comment thread said said that Till was to blame because he was sexist. I was shocked when I read that.

    • sagittarius

As someone correctly pointed out (I think in Sunday’s thread), white women cooked the food and got the kids ready for the picnic at the lynchings. They are just as complicit in racism as their husbands – even more so, because they want black and other women of color to sing Kumbaya around feminist (aka white women’s) issues.

    • jds09

And some white feminists believe that sexism is the source of all evil in the world, and once that’s addressed everything else (racism, classism, etc.) can easily be fixed. Really, I’ve had this debate with a few liberal white females.

    – - – SNIP —
One of those bills, a measure to ban abortion after 20 weeks and shut down the majority of the states’ abortion clinics, has captured national attention over the past several weeks as thousands of Texans have rallied at the capitol in protest. The legislature gave final approval to that bill on Saturday, and Gov. Rick Perry (R) just signed it into law on Thursday morning. But that’s not enough to satisfy Reps. Phil King (R), Dan Flynn (R), and Geanie Morrison (R) — who filed HB 59 on the same day that Perry signed the controversial abortion restrictions.

So-called “heartbeat” bills are so radical that they divide the anti-choice community.
