    The finding in the NBC polls that may really be significant is simply that there was little movement.

    He’s referring to an NBC poll released tonight, which showed almost no movement in the polling in Iowa and Wisconsin from September. That poll comports with one released by Reuters which shows President Obama +3 with likely voters, and +8 with registered voters. This is at odds with the Gallup poll which some ppl are freaking out over and which even Nate Silver said is likely an outlier. What all of this polling says to me is that panic is completely and utterly useless right now, that many people in crucial states have already made up their minds, and that GOTV is the most crucial exercise right now, not buying into the media’s horserace stuff. Meaning that donations and volunteering are the best ways to help our effort. I hope that the people who freaked out on twitter and elsewhere today calm down and realize that.

    Town: you were prescient–there was just an arrest in the Virginia destroyed voter registration forms story and the arrestee was…shocker…a young GOP registration consultant.

    A Pennsylvania man employed by a company working for the Republican Party of Virginia was arrested by investigators from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s office on Thursday and charged with destroying voter registration forms.

    Colin Small, a 31-year-old resident of Phoenixville, Pa., worked for Pinpoint, a company hired to register voters on behalf of the Republican Party of Virginia. Prosecutors charged him with four counts of destruction of voter registration applications, eight counts of failing to disclose voter registration applications and one count of obstruction of justice.

          Just be careful & keep the Benedryl handy. The problem with having allergies seems to be you always keep getting new ones or that’s what happened to me & now I have asthma.

          Last, why do the Docs always take a vacation when you need them most? That happened to me with baby #3. An intern delivered her & he was so excited because this was his first real delivery on his own. (I did all the real work!) You just have to laugh & keep strong.

    —–During Tuesday’s second presidential debate, Republican nominee Mitt Romney floated a new idea to pay for his tax plan, which provides nearly $5 trillion in tax cuts. Romney introduced this proposal after analysts showed that Romney can’t mathematically achieve his goals of reducing income tax rates by 20 percent while not increasing middle class taxes or adding to the deficit.

    But a Tax Policy Center analysis found Romney’s idea, to cap the amount of deductions each taxpayer can take advantage of at $25,000, also fails to make his plan add up.

    And as the Center for American Progress’ Seth Hanlon noted in a column on Thursday, Romney’s plan would still provide a massive tax cut to the wealthiest Americans, even if a deduction cap were in place. After they hit the cap on deductions, members of the top one percent would get tax cuts totaling more than $105,000. And for wealthier taxpayers, the breaks get even bigger, Hanlon found: – — -

    Pennsylvania’s biggest utility company, PECO, has admitted to sending incorrect voter ID information to 1.3 million customers in 7 Pennsylvania counties.[....] When customers complained about the inaccurate mailing, a PECO spokesperson explained the mailing was approved a week before the Pennsylvania Supreme Court sent the law back to the Commonwealth Court to reconsider the risk of disenfranchisement for low-income, minority, and elderly voters.[....]

    Obama Reiterates Pledge To Close Guantanamo Bay

    President Barack Obama reiterated his 2008 pledge to close the military prison facility at Guantanamo Bay during a taping of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart on Thursday afternoon. Obama signed an executive order his first week in office that ordered the Guantanamo Bay prison closed by January 2010, but Congress has inserted language into legistation Obama signed that prevented him from closing the facility.

    “I still want to close Guantanamo. We haven’t been able to get that through Congress,” Obama said, according to a White House pool report. “One of the things we have to do is put a legal architecture in place, and we need Congressional help to do that so that not only am I reined in but any president’s reined in in terms of some of the decisions we’re making.”[....]

    – —Virginia health commissioner Dr. Karen Remley resigned from her position on the state’s Board of Health today, citing Virginia’s restrictive regulations for abortion clinics as her primary reason for stepping down.

    The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that Remley believes she can no longer serve on the Board of Health “in good faith” because she does not agree with the new facility regulations, which require clinics to make costly, largely unnecessary updates that may force some of them to shut down:

    In a letter to colleagues this afternoon, Remley writes that “how specific sections of the Virginia Code pertaining to the development and enforcement of these regulations have been and continue to be interpreted has created an environment in which my ability to fulfill my duties is compromised and in good faith I can no longer serve in my role.”

    Romney Speech Raised Red Flags for Military School, Documents Show

    When Mitt Romney addressed a crowd of cadets at Virginia Military Institute on October 8, he was supposed to give a major foreign policy speech that steered clear of partisan politics. That’s because VMI personnel observe the US military’s tradition of political neutrality when in uniform. But internal emails obtained by Mother Jones show that Romney’s campaign pushed to burnish his commander-in-chief credentials by maximizing military optics around the event.

    Members of Romney’s staff sought to use the VMI logo in their campaign materials, requested that uniformed cadets be let out of class early to attend Romney’s speech, and asked VMI “to select a few cadet veterans and give them a place of honor” standing behind Romney during his address.[....]

    - – — - Less than three weeks before the election, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-Md.) is demanding more documents from a conservative group that claims to be battling instances of voter fraud throughout the country.

    But Cummings contends the real goal of True the Vote is to stop legal voters — mostly in minority communities — from casting ballots, by deploying hundreds of thousands of volunteers to intimidate them.

    As the ranking Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Cummings also raised concerns in a letter on Thursday to Catherine Engelbrecht, True the Vote’s founder, about the group’s ties to the Republican Party.

    Snarky Amazon.com customers have posted slews of fake (though incredibly in-depth) reviews on, you guessed it, binders. Many of the reviews, tongues firmly in cheek, give credit to the binders for their ability to contain females. LeeBo of Raleigh, North Carolina writes, “As a wife and mother, I LOVE this binder. It keeps me in my place, allows me get dinner ready on time, AND costs 72% of more masculine version. Some people might think its sexist, but sheesh, I’m not binding my feet, just my brain.”

    Romney’s New ‘Military Advisory Council’ Packed With Military Contractors

    Mitt Romney’s campaign yesterday announced a “Military Advisory Council” of retired military officers who support his candidacy for president. “While many of those on the Council are clearly decorated veterans,” boldprogressive.org’s Zaid Jilani observes, “one curious aspect of the list is how many of these military figures left the government only to become highly paid consultants and board members to major weapons makers.” Romney plans on increasing military spending by more than $2 trillion should he become president (without any plan to pay for it) and perhaps Romney’s new supporters plan on cashing in. Jilani lists some members of Romney’s council and their defense industry affiliations here.

Dean Heller (R) over his vote agains the Lilly Ledbetter Act while a member of Congress in 2009. Many Republicans opposed the Ledbetter Act, which was the first bill signed into law by President Obama.

    EMILY’s List says the pay equity message resonates in Nevada, and their new ad hints at how Ledbetter could play in swing states like Nevada following Tuesday night’s debate. The Romney campaign has strugged with the Ledbetter Act since Presdient Obama brought it up in the debate, saying the candidate has no position on whether or not it should have become law but promising not to repeal it now that it is.
