[....] With the 2012 election campaign in full swing, Obama will make a high-profile pitch to voters Thursday in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Democrats’ are holding their party convention.[....] Organizers of the event at the 70,000-seater Bank of America stadium had handed out tens of thousands of “community credentials” on a first-come-first-served basis.[....]
But some were left out. In August local media reported thousands of people waited in line for hours for a chance to get a ticket only to leave empty handed. With days to go before the speech, local Internet sites were littered with locals willing to pay for tickets.[....]
Report: House GOP Has Held 55 Votes On Anti-Women Bills |
House Democrats have released a new study tracking the House GOP’s harmful anti-women agenda. Since January 2011, the Republican-controlled House has voted 55 times on bills to “undermine women’s health, roll back women’s rights, and defund programs and institutions that provide support for women,” according to the report prepared by the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Democratic staff. The votes — including 17 about health insurance, 11 to cut access to preventive care, and 10 to limit abortion access — make up 5 percent of all the House legislative votes in the 112th Congress.

— – — The taxpayers’ bill for Texas’ ongoing legal fight to defend its extreme voter ID law and redistricting map has topped $2 million, Dallas News reports. Defending the voter ID law, which would suppress Hispanic and minority voting, alone has cost Texas more than $1 million in office expenses and outside counsel. Last week, two panels sided against the state in both cases, noting that the laws discriminate against minority voters. The legal costs will only continue to mount, since Attorney General Greg Abbott (R) will appeal both cases to the U.S. Supreme Court.
— – - – Teen Olympics sensation Gabby Douglas isn’t just a gold medal winning gymnast — she is also about to become an author. Douglas is a releasing an inspirational memoir called Grace, Gold and Glory, My Leap of Faith, which will be coming out in December. People magazine has more:
Olympic Gold Medalist Gabby Douglas announced Thursday that she will write an “inspirational memoir,” planned for December 2012 publication.
The book, to be titled Grace, Gold and Glory, My Leap of Faith, will chronicle the 16-year-old’s early life, how she left her family in Virginia at age 12 to train 3,000 miles away and her path to gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Bill Clinton draws more viewers than the NFL, but Fox News’ ratings may be the real story…
More people watched Bill Clinton’s speech last night than watched the Cowboys-Giants NFL kickoff game, although his 20.6 million viewers were quite a drop from the 26.2 million who watched Michelle Obama’s speech Tuesday night. By the way, her speech drew about 4 million viewers more than Ann Romney’s speech at last week’s RNC. Not a good sign for the GOP.

Jill Biden To Democratic Women: ‘We Can’t Go Back’
Jill Biden, wife of Vice President Joe Biden, spoke to a crowd of women at the Democratic Women’s Caucus meeting here Thursday. In brief remarks, Biden echoed Obama campaign messaging that the 2012 election is a battle to protect the gains in rights and equal pay for women over the past several decades.
“We can’t go back and fight the same battles we’ve fought,” Biden said. She said some of the fights over women’s rights today remind her of battles from the 1960s.
Biden’s husband will address the Democratic National Convention tonight in primetime ahead of the president.

Va. Guard troops all home for first time in 10 years
[....] The Virginia National Guard has sent nearly 15,000 citizen-soldiers and airmen overseas, many of them on multiple deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Others were activated for federal duty patrolling the U.S. border in Arizona, and for a peacekeeping mission in Kosovo. A record 2,200 guard members deployed from Virginia in 2003.
And now, another milestone: With the end of the Iraq war and fewer ground forces in Afghanistan, every Virginia National Guard unit is home for the first time in a decade. Gov. Bob McDonnell marked the “historic point” in an open letter to members of the guard last week.[....]

Remember back in June when some “journalist” declared it to be Obama’s awful June. I don’t remember the exact headline but I do remember it was written in the first few days of the month. I thought we’re barely a week into June and this fool thinks he knows what’s coming before it even happens. His foolish prediction was based on the jobs numbers and the likelihood the SC would declare the ACA unconstitutional. Well, June turned out to be a great, and I believe, decisive month for PBO. The jobs numbers were not good by beltway standards but I happen to believe as long as we are gaining and not losing jobs then it’s a good report to me and I’m sure to the people who got hired that month. But right after that report came out PBO and his team turned on a dime and began to fillet Williard relentlessly over his refusal to release his taxes and record of cruelty and greed at Bain. They brutalized him all month long and just when Williard expected a reprieve the SC upheld the ACA culminating in an excellent June for the prez.
The beating continued for Williard in July as we received better job numbers and the Bain ads were having the desired effect so poor “wittle Williard” thought he could escape this thrashing by taking a foreign trip to show American voters how presidential he could be on the world stage, NOT!!! So he returns home as an international pariah, having nearly averted WWIII, with his tail tucked between his legs to be greeted by another “journalist” suggesting August would be a great month for Williard because of the likely positive buzz around his VP pick, convention and the expected bump afterwards. This was written, of course, either at the end of July or the beginning of August. Well, Williard picks Lyin Ryan who is finally outed as the lying, phony, sociopath he is. Senate candidate Todd Akin decides to enlighten the world to the phrase “legitimate rape” and the GOP clown show stumbles into their convention under threat of hurricane. The hatefest is just that. Williard is treated like an afterthought at his own convention, Clint Eastwood talking to a chair is the only thing anyone remembers and there’s no bump. I don’t think Williard can take too many more “great” months like that. And with what has so far been an excellent Democratic convention coupled with the possibility of a good jobs report, September ain’t looking too good for Williard either.
Note to journalists: try waiting until a story unfolds before writing said story. Just a thought. You’re journalists not psychics.

—- –Today the NAACP, in collaboration with Brave New Foundation, released an animated short highlighting the myth of in-person voter fraud in U.S. elections.
“Dangerous World” points out the absurdity in imposing strict voter ID laws to stop the 1 and 2.3 million chance that a person would commit voter fraud. View the film here: http://action.naacp.org/set-the-record-straight
The video demonstrates the fact that you are more likely to be struck by lightening, drowned in a bathtub, killed by a swarm of bees, or have witnessed a massive asteroid destroy the planet then commit an act of voter fraud.
“Proponents, in states like Pennsylvania, have unearthed little to no evidence of voter impersonation fraud,” said Benjamin Todd Jealous, President & CEO of the NAACP. “Yet, in the past two years, states have passed more laws to block more people from the ballot box since the dawn of the Jim Crow era. Suppressing the vote diminishes election integrity by nurturing a political environment that ignores democracy and sustains social, economic, and ethnic disparities in today’s society.”
– -“The NAACP will continue to educate communities about suppressive voting laws and will fight until misguided and malicious laws like these are wiped from the books.”

– - – -The convention here had barely gotten under way Thursday night, but the crowd came close to a grand-finale moment when former Rep. Gabby Giffords took the stage to lead the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Giffords took the stage, walking unassisted, alongside her longtime friend Debbie Wasserman Schultz, to raucous cheers of “Gabby! Gabby!” from the crowd.
On her way off the stage, she paused and blew the crowd a kiss.
– - –Former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm told the Democratic National Convention Thursday night that in Mitt Romney’s world, cars get the elevator and workers “get the shaft.” — —-
— – – The Obama campaign has released excerpts of the president’s big speech tonight, in which he will make the case that voters must choose between “two fundamentally different visions” of the nation’s future, reports CNN. A sampling:
“When you pick up that ballot to vote, you will face the clearest choice of any time in a generation. Over the next few years, big decisions will be made in Washington, on jobs and the economy; taxes and deficits; energy and education; war and peace—decisions that will have a huge impact on our lives and our children’s lives for decades to come.”
“On every issue, the choice you face won’t be just between two candidates or two parties. It will be a choice between two different paths for America. A choice between two fundamentally different visions for the future.”

– - – -1. The Road Not Taken
TWO roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth; 5
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same, 10
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back. 15
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. 20
– - – - -At the DNC Thursday night, civil rights leader Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) recounted his fight for voting rights, the progress made, and the continued threat to ensuring the right to vote for all Americans. Lewis, who still bears scars from beatings in his struggle for racial equality told the DNC audience “we have come too far together to ever turn back.” Yet he warned that Republican-led voter suppression laws are taking America back in that direction:
Brothers and sisters, do you want to go back? Or do you want to keep America moving forward? My dear friends, your vote is precious, almost sacred. It is the most powerful, nonviolent tool we have to create a more perfect union. Not too long ago, people stood in unmovable lines. They had to pass a so-called literacy test, pay a poll tax. On one occasion, a man was asked to count the number of bubbles in a bar of soap. On another occasion, one was asked to count the jelly beans in a jar—all to keep them from casting their ballots.
Today it is unbelievable that there are Republican officials still trying to stop some people from voting. They are changing the rules, cutting polling hours and imposing requirements intended to suppress the vote. The Republican leader in the Pennsylvania House even bragged that his state’s new voter ID law is “gonna allow Governor Romney to win the state.” That’s not right. That’s not fair. That’s not just.
Watch it:
— –He’s FOUGHT the VOTER RIGHTS battle B4. NOW he hasta DO IT AGAIN!! —WHEW LAWD!!
– - – – HE IS A TIRELESS WARRIOR! — BLESS HIM. — :>)
