Thursday Evening Thread: “The Dream Lives On”

There is a new wave of change all around us, and if we set our compass true, we will reach our destination — not merely victory for our Party, but renewal for our nation. And this November the torch will be passed again to a new generation of Americans, so with Barack Obama and for you and for me, our country will be committed to his cause. The work begins anew. The hope rises again. And the dream lives on. – Senator Edward Kennedy, August 25, 2008

Inspiring visuals and text. And, our work continues to bend that arc of justice.

  • PBomb

Okay, I can imagine that the look on Justice Ginsburg’s face when Scalia’s dimwitted ass went on about broccoli mandates and crap that she going to shiv him in her argument.

    This is so awesome…

When contemplated in its extreme, almost any power looks dangerous. The commerce power, hypothetically, would enable Congress to prohibit the purchase and home production of all meat, fish, and dairy goods, effectively compelling Americans to eat only vegetables. Yet no one would offer the “hypothetical and unreal possibilit[y],” of a vegetarian state as a credible reason to deny Congress the authority ever to ban the possession and sale of goods. The Chief Justice accepts just such specious logic when he cites the broccoli horrible as a reason to deny Congress the power to pass the individual mandate.

I am sure she was muttering “fat bastard” under her breath when she had her clerk write her concurrence on ACA.

      Judicial shade, indeed!!!

I read a bit of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s life story. She’s smart, resilient, very resourceful. Quite used to dealing with arrogant white men. And the first women to be on TWO Law Reviews – Harvard and Columbia. The “how” of how she managed to do that is testimony to her quiet grit. I think the ol’ babe is a ‘Ride or Die” chick. Seriously!!

…Then, another challenge: Martin contracted testicular cancer in 1956, requiring intensive treatment and rehabilitation. Ruth Ginsburg attended to her young daughter and convalescing husband, taking notes for him in classes while she continued her own law studies. …

She’s almost 80. I’m pretty sure that she’s hanging on until Pres. Obama get’s re-elected so that she can retire knowing that her work will NOT be in vain.

Also, I’m convince that she reminds PBO of his “Toot.” Ginsburg is smart, short and cute, just like his grandmother was.

      • Aquagranny911

…”smart, short & cute…” Lets hear it for the short people!!!! I always thought she was cute myself, especially in her robes with that little scruff of lace at her neck that always said to me: “Hey you guys, I’m also a girl, so eat that too!”

I agree that she is a “ride or die chick.” I really bet she loved rubbing old bubba head’s face in the broccoli when she wrote her brief. You Go Girl!!!

      • Alexander2

Brad Miller (NC) voted for the bs against AG Holder? He is a progressive darling.

“Could Brad Miller, who just yesterday announced his retirement from Congress, be urged to turn around and run in the Governor’s race in North Carolina? It could happen.

. . . shortly after Miller’s announcement, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee sent an email to all of its members in North Carolina asking them if Miller should run for governor, while highlighting his congressional efforts to protect consumers from banking abuses. So far, over 97 percent of respondents have urged Miller to run for governor, according to PCCC spokesman Neil Sroka.”

In a 2009 Op-ed, Mitt Romney urged President Obama to use the individual mandate!

    • Miranda

My goodness….the debates are gonna be epic. I wonder if PBO will kinda string Mitt along and then go for the knock out later of if he’ll just say “F it” and pummel him right from the start until he cries.

      • isonprize

        Miranda,

Nah, I’ma go with the “string along” approach. It’s been his MO all along. He’s a very patient man. Remember this?

Oh yeah…..he gonna f Mitt all up.

I think he’s gonna hit Mitt with facts aplenty. I hope he does Mitt like how he did the Repubs at their retreat–the Baltimore Massacre. I done told my family the debates are must see TV–popcorn and water and gingerale, cause I’m a tee-totaler.

On a lighter note, So, I tried to buy tickets online for movie I want to see tomorrow is already sold out at like 2 theatres! All the tickets were bought online. Wow! That’s the first time that’s happened when I’ve bought tics online.

The movie is Magic Mike. I had to call the box office. There had better be some nice physiques and lots of partial nudity in this movie for all this trouble I went to to get tickets. This is girls night and all the girls (i.e. me and my gays as Kathy Griffin would say) wanted this the fun part of our “drinks and fun” girls night.

Michael Savage: Roberts Epilepsy Medication Affects His Cognition

“Let’s talk about Roberts. I’m going to tell you something that you’re not going to hear anywhere else, that you must pay attention to. It’s well known that Roberts, unfortunately for him, has suffered from epileptic seizures. Therefore he has been on medication. Therefore neurologists will tell you that medication used for seizure disorders, such as epilepsy, can introduce mental slowing, forgetfulness and other cognitive problems. And if you look at Roberts’ writings you can the cognitive disassociation in what he is saying,” Michael Savage said on his radio program this evening.

    • Alma98

What a nasty piece of work just ugly.

    • nellcote

well if you want to go there, maybe living with epilepsy caused him to have a bit of empathy for people dealing with pre-existing conditions.

    • Admiral_Komack

I want John Roberts to take off his robe and whip his ass.

      “Seizure this, motherfucker!”
“Be glad I ruled the way I did, so that ObamaCares can put you back together after I take you apart!”

      • AxelFoley

Why’d I get the image in my head of Roberts whipping off his belt like Granpa Freeman from The Boondocks?

  • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

And now for the “Ivory Tower Whine” portion of today’s program:

    Eddie S. Glaude Jr. ‏@esglaude
Let’s be clear: good thing the SCOTUS did not strike down the individual mandate, but I prefer a single payer system.

    Eddie S. Glaude Jr. ‏@esglaude
Whatever the word progressive means these days it has to involve, in my view, support of single-payer health care and opposition to drones.

    Eddie S. Glaude Jr. ‏@esglaude
@ZerlinaMaxwell My point is simple: let’s remember that the individual mandate doesn’t do what single payer could’ve done.

    Eddie S. Glaude Jr. ‏@esglaude
@ZerlinaMaxwell And I say this only to dampen just a bit the excitement around the SCOTUS decision.

    Eddie S. Glaude Jr. ‏@esglaude
@ZerlinaMaxwell I understand the practical politics of the matter. I am just emphasizing the principle.

    —————————————————————————————-

It’s easy for Glaude to talk about principle when he has health insurance thanks to Princeton University that would not have been affected if SCOTUS overturned ACA.

    • Ebogan63

“Swiss are required to purchase basic health insurance, which covers a range of treatments detailed in the Federal Act.”

      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Healthcare_in_Switzerland

Recognized as one of the best healthcare systems in the world, they have AN INDIVIDUAL MANDATE! And if Eddie ‘understood the practical politics’ where are the votes right this minute for a single payer system?

Yeah, I would ‘prefer’ that people not be denied insurance for a pre-existing condition, not be thrown off due to recission, and able to keep their kids on their own healthcare ’till 26 yrs old and the Medicare Part D donut hole be closed.

Single payer can come when the votes are there.

ETA: And, no one gives a good got dayum about fucking drones!

    • trose1

So Glaude want to “dampen” excitement about the decision. He really needs to STFU.

    • Miranda

He is everything that’s wrong with academic progressives.

Speaking of which, I know climate change is important, but am I the only one that sees that Chris Hayes commercial on msnbc and get irritated?

      • AxelFoley

No, I get irritated every time I see that little douchenozzle. He’s got a punchable face.

        • Miranda

OK, so its not just me and I take it from your 5 likes, that 4 other people (besides me) wanna punch him right straight in the face.

    • GN

lmao, gotta love how he slipped the new pavlovian word “drones” in there (did he have gg on the phone when he was writing this?).

…I say this only to dampen just a bit the excitement…

Yes, for his entire presidency thus far, the sole patrol’s entire playbook is to dampen and sour the excitement of historical times, hoping to convince people that anything short of utopia is failure when it comes to this POTUS. There’s nothing progressive about that whatsoever.

Sole patrol delivers sour lectures teaching us the notion of limitations and the merits of obsessively viewing ourselves and judging ourselves from the vantage point of those who aren’t entirely convinced of our humanity.

PBO delivers hope, change, self-possession, and moves from that abstract delivery into tangible items such as the healthcare reform which benefits millions of people.

      You do the math.

      • Worldwatcher7

Sho’ ya right. The man just admitted that his goal is to dampen our spirits. He is a professional Debbie Downer.

    – -First lady Michelle Obama brought an audience of 10,000 African Methodist Episcopal Church members to their feet as she exhorted them to get involved in the issues that affect their lives.

Speaking at the AME Church’s 49th General Conference in Nashville on Thursday, Obama praised the church for its role in fighting slavery, segregation and disenfranchisement of blacks at the ballot box.

She says the way to tackle challenges like childhood obesity and poor schools can be less clear-cut. But she told the crowd that laws still matter and still shape our lives.

She asked them not to get overwhelmed by today’s problems.

Appealing to their faith, she said, “If a simple fisherman could become the rock upon which Christ built his church, surely we can do our part.” (AP)

    Candidate Blank

    By CHARLES M. BLOW

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this.

If this is the Etch A Sketch phase of Mitt Romney’s campaign, he seems to want to freeze it the moment after you shake the toy, before you turn the knobs again: blank.

Mitt Romney wants to run as the generic candidate, the every man and any man, undefined, nonspecific, the other guy, anybody but Obama.

Romney inserts “economy” into every sentence but recoils from specificity like a slug from salt.

The Romney message is that he is the amorphous economic messiah come to save us all from the flailing of the inexperienced and ineffectual president. He can create jobs and make the economy grow, somehow. He can cut government spending and cut taxes, somehow. He can fix immigration and education, somehow. He can do a better job of dealing with the healthcare system and our entitlement programs, somehow.

But how, specifically? Just make him president and all will be revealed, too late for voters to rebel, leaving time only for regret. That is the Romney strategy: Obfuscate and delay. Stay loose and elusive. Hide in the fog until the search party passes.

    http://campaignstops.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/27/candidate-blank/

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen anything like this.

I just wanna thank Nancy Smash this evening. When Scott Brown was elected, and Democrats began to despair, she told them to buckle up and gird those loins and helped the President drag the ACA over the finish line.

    thank you, Nancy Smash.

    • GN

She sure did. Remember Boehner’s livid press conference? Man was red in the face; “oh no you can’t!” I think that Nancy Pelosi is currently completely underrated in terms of a historical first female House Speaker who delivered a legislative session for the absolute record books. Excellence.

      • nellcote

She also got the Dream Act passed in the house as well as a long list of liberal priorities. Of course they died in the senate but Nancy Smash rocked the House!

These poor teabaggers really sincerely believe this contempt charge against Holder means something. Boy are they in for a shock.

I can’t wait for the day about 10 years (or less) from now when schools in urban areas all over this country start changing their names from whatever street to Barack Obama Elementary School – and make no mistake, there will be some Eric Holder Junior Highs in there as well.

    • GN

I firmly believe that history will be extremely kind to PBO’s admin. Just as in other periods of huge progress in this country, the detractors have been no less than virulent. But man has the PBO admin risen above it. What a terrific day.

    • AxelFoley

      LOL, word up.

    • Admiral_Komack

Eric Holder: “Gee, Barack, I guess Congress has spoken.”
Barack: “Yeah, Eric, I guess the Attorney General has to uphold that contempt citation.”

      1…2…3…

      (both men) “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”

      Eric: “Sheeett!”

      Barack: “Golly!”

I got an email earlier today from a Sistafriend. Between the two of us, I am the political junkie- we don’t talk politics very much. But, her email was so simple. She said,

” I was worried FOR HIM.”

She didn’t have to explain to me who HIM was. I understood.

I respect President Barack Obama for many reasons, most among them is the fact that he inherited a mess, and in addition to trying to clean it up, he CHOSE to tackle healthcare. It wasn’t the ‘safe’ thing to do, but it was the right thing to do.

There has been a concerted effort from the moment this President was sworn in, to diminish and disrespect all that he has done and tried to do. To try and erase this man’s place in history.

Today’s decision will take care of that.

Loved this final piece from Rev. Al’s show yesterday.

    – — -The Attempted Metaphorical Lynching of Eric Holder — –

    – — -Don’t get all angry just because I’m calling this what it is. Here we have the NRA ordering a yes vote on contempt for AG Eric Holder, and Southern White Democrats– well, NRA Democrats — going along with it. Who is behind it? Why, the same nut jobs who are still looking for Obama’s birth certificate.

The “fast and furious” scandal is nothing but trumped up baloney, for which there is NO evidence at this time. Given that, it’s amazing that we are calmly reporting on the historical vote to hold Holder in contempt.

I was up last night fuming about the Democrats who have said they would bow down to the NRA on this matter, and it hit me, this is a lynching show, put on by the very militia adjacent NRA that pals around with birthers, racists, and white supremacists. Forgive the redundancy.

I co-sign all of this. I am so sick and tired of all these progressives who want to pretend that having a “D” in front of your title automatically makes you a libel. NO. The democrats have plenty of racists and corporate owned asshole in our party that are hemming up legislation (and it wouldn’t even be that many if certain people had bothered voting in 2010 instead of acting like not voting was going to solve anything) and who have no problem sabotaging this administration.

Republican Lawmaker Screams With Joy At False News Of Mandate Being Overturned | With some news networks erroneously reporting that the Supreme Court struck down the Affordable Care Act’s individual health care mandate just moments after the justices released their opinion, President Obama wasn’t the only prominent politician who initially thought the provision had fallen. MSNBC posts this video of Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) — an opponent of the measure — screaming with joy at the false news that the Court invalidated the requirement. Watch it:

In short: “the entire ACA is upheld, with the exception that the federal government’s power to terminate states’ Medicaid funds is narrowly read.” Roberts joined Sotomayor, Breyer, Ginsburg, and Kagan in the 5 to 4 decision. Just listened to George Miller (California, US Rep -D) on Ed Schultz with some details of the ACA.

PBO and the folks that crafted the ACA are GENIUS!!!

Republican governors most likely will NOT refuse %100 reimbursement of Medicaid expenses for their state budgets. They may grumble, they may fuss, but they will be pure idiots to refuse %100 reimbursed expenses for the next 3 years. (Yes, I know that there are more than a few of them that ARE pure idiots. But still.. %100 reim is hard to turn down…)

    – – 4 Reasons Why Republicans Won’t Be Able To Repeal Obamacare- —

    – – – -Responding to Thursday’s Supreme Court decision upholding the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, Congressional Republicans have scheduled a vote in the House to repeal the law and Mitt Romney pledged to undo the measure if he’s elected president in November. But unless the GOP wins a super majority in the Senate — a scenario no one thinks is plausible — it can do little more than weaken Obamacare’s regulations and defund some of its provisions. Here is why:

    1) Romney has no authority to issue waivers. Romney has promised to expand a provision of the Affordable Care Act that allows states to opt out of certain sections of the law to permit states to ignore it entirely. But the executive branch and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) likely don’t have the authority to grant such broad waivers. According to the law, HHS (together with the IRS) have waiver authority, but only if the states meet very specific requirements. Neither have blanket waiver authority, which would have to come from Congress. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) — the author of the waiver provision — has challenged Romney’s claims, saying, “Anybody who tries to move outside the standards of the bill — which is the coverage and costs and the like — well I’ll certainly fight that. But I think lots of other people will too.”

    2) Congress can’t repeal the full law through reconciliation.
