Thursday Evening Thread: The Power of a Black Child’s Eyes

Scared yet? Well according to the Miami-Dade Police, you should be. Apparently a 14 year old can exude a “dehumanizing stare” (the actual words used) so petrifying and potentially lethal that it is considered threatening to armed police officers.

So let’s see, carrying skittles, iced tea, listening to loud music, and now using the sense of sight – all harmful, deadly acts that we must heed a warning about to our children. SMH.

Also, In case you missed it: Rev. Al spoke with Attorney Benjamin Crump about the latest developments in the Trayvon Martin murder case.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

After Taliban Deputy’s Death, Hints of a Schism
    Published: May 30, 2013

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The Pakistani Taliban on Thursday acknowledged the death of its deputy leader in a drone attack, and one subgroup unilaterally announced a successor to his position, portending a possible rift.

    [snip]

Mr. Ehsan, the Taliban spokesman, said the group’s future strategy would be decided by its shura, or leadership council. Still, there were signs that the killing had exacerbated existing differences inside the Taliban ranks.

On Thursday morning, a group of six commanders allied with Mr. Rehman announced their own successor to his position, apparently without approval of the Taliban shura.

    • Worldwatcher7

Uh huh, uh huh. Perhaps some exercises to build trust and strengthen communication skills are in order. For example, Mr. Rehman could fall backwards into the arms of the leader of the opposing faction. Then they could stand in a circle and play the “rumors” game.

Then a drone could bomb them all.

Karl Rove Was Feeding the Romneys False Hope on Election Night
By Elspeth Reeve | The Atlantic Wire – 5 hrs ago

The Romneys clung to the belief that they could still win Ohio — and the White House — late into election night, even though exit polls across the country showed they were toast, as public polls had shown the week before. Karl Rove, too, refused to believe Ohio was lost, even after Fox News’ own decision desk called the state forPresident Obama. Whose fault is that? The old story, reported right after the election, was that Rove was relaying the concerns of theRomney campaign on-air that night. But on Thursday, Ann Romney gave her first solo post-election interview to CBS This Morning, and she said it was Rove who’d been calling them that night, reassuring the Romneys they could still win. “About 6 o’clock we started getting a little worried,” Romney said. “Exit polls weren’t terrific and at about 8 o’clock the panic button was pressed.” But a flicker of hope remained, she said, because of a certain Fox pundit.

Gayle King: Even that night weren’t people still saying, ‘Hang in there, hang in there, it’s not over yet’?” Romney: Yes. King: Who was saying that? Romney: Karl Rove.King: What’d he say? Romney: He’s like, ‘Don’t give up, don’t give up. We’re gonna win Ohio. And, you know, it’s gonna turn around.’ And things just didn’t follow the way we thought it was going to happen.”

So I see the media big wigs are all out saying they won’t meet off the record with Holder and are using it to make hay I guess. But I had a thought, wouldn’t it be something if Holder and DOJ held their meeting and actually planned to make the discussion (or most of it on the record)? Wouldn’t it be something if Holder opens the meeting by telling those in attendance that it was okay to put things on the record. Wouldn’t that just piss in the eye of the bigwigs who refuse to meet with Holder?

    • jds09

I think Holder has some shit on their behinds. Murdoch’s mess hasn’t shown up yet (the American version) and I bet the NYT, along with the WSJ did some shady shit in pursuit of stories. I know I’m wearing a tin foil hat, I’ve been waiting for that hacking mess to hit our shores.

UW education dean warns school boards that ALEC seeks to wipe them out
8 hours ago • PAT SCHNEIDER | The Capital Times |

ALEC is still at it, Julie Underwood, dean of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, cautions in “School Boards Beware,” a commentary in the May issue of Wisconsin School News.

The model legislation disseminated by the pro-free market American Legislative Exchange Council’s national network of corporate members and conservative legislators seeks to privatize education and erode the local control, Underwood says.

“The ALEC goal to eliminate school districts and school boards is a bit shocking — but the idea is to make every school, public and private, independent through vouchers for all students. By providing all funding to parents rather than school districts, there is no need for local coordination, control or oversight,” she writes in the magazine of the Wisconsin Association of School Boards.

Underwood, who says that Wisconsin public schools already face unprecedented change, last year co-authored a piece about ALEC’s grander plans, a “legislative contagion (that) seemed to sweep across the Midwest during the early months of 2011.

Remember the news anchor that said the IRS was targeting him too? Then he got relieved of his duties? Well guess what, the poor dear says he was really fired because he’s a white man. Seriously.
    _______________________

Larry Conners Says KMOV-TV Paid Him Less Than Vickie Newton Due to His Race, Gender

The saga of former KMOV-TV (Channel 4) news anchor Larry Conners just got a whole lot more complicated.

Since his firing, his attorneys have filed a formal discrimination complaint with theMissouri Commission on Human Rights alleging that his bosses terminated him in retaliation for a dispute he had with the station in 2010 regarding his salary. In that legal battle, Conners writes in the complaint, he had alleged that KMOV was unfairly paying him less than his co-prime anchor, Vickie Newton, “an African-American female; I claimed that I received less compensation than Newtown because of my race and gender.”

Since the resulting arbitration against KMOV and parent company Belo concluded in April 2012, Conners alleges in the new complaint, his bosses have treated him differently — eventually leading to his firing this month.

The accusations in this formal complaint, sent out by his attorneys this morning, come as quite a surprise just weeks after the Conners controversy erupted.

Two weeks ago, Conners speculated on his Facebook page whether the IRS had targeted him in response to an April 2012 interview he did with President Obama. He later read a statement on-air admitting he had issues with the IRS several years prior and said that his views were his own.

John McCain, in meeting with Syrian war rebels, thinks he’s President

United States Senator John McCain has traveled to Syria to meet with rebel fighters and discuss with them America’s possible involvement in the nation’s civil war. Someone may need to tap Senator Mccain on the shoulder and remind him that he lost the election in 2008 and is in fact not the President. As a vocal critic of President Obama’s non-intervention policies toward the Syrian civil war, we know that McCain’s visit wasn’t authorized or condoned by the White House.[....] As much as no one is eager to criticize Vietnam a war hero on Memorial
Day, Senator McCain is again demonstrating that there’s little to
connect the dots between selfless between war hero John Mccain and
    self-interested politician John McCain.

By traveling to war torn Syria
on his own, he risks getting attacked by the Syrian army in a manner
which would force the United States to respond in kind, dragging our
nation into a land war whose results are anything but predictable. And
by holding a diplomatic meeting with Syrian rebels, McCain risks
antagonizing Syrian leader Assad such that he might in turn feel
compelled to attack U.S. interests in the region. After all, a high
ranking member of the U.S. government just met with those who are
attempting to overthrow him, even if he didn’t have the authorization of
    the U.S. President.[....]

[....] “I’m proud of my heritage, but honestly, black people are the most judgmental people in the world. Sh-t’s sad, man,” the BET Award winner wrote. “We’ve been conditioned, pre-programmed to hate ourselves. That’s why I appreciate those who choose to think and act for themselves regardless of ethnicity or culture.”

Miguel continued, “The problem can not be fixed until the problem is recognized. Not everyone is the same thank goodness. And obviously, I love all my fans. Of course everyone is judgmental. I just personally believe we are the most critical of our own.”

      Hey, creolechild:

Miguel is a talented singer-songwriter who had a megahit this winter with “Adorn”. He was performing at the Billboards Awards last week, when he decided to make a move that was either gonna be full of win…. or full of fail. It was the latter:

He got clowned… on Twitter, on blogs, on Lipstick Alley. One of my favorite comments was by somebody named ‘Racist Juan’ on Twitter

“Let my nuts adorn you, girl” – Miguel

So, he is reacting to the clowning. In a moment of sheer fuckery, Miguel got mad about folks laughing at him and made the comments above about judgmental Black folks.

What he should have done is rode the wave. He sent a Tweet that showed a photo of him and the young lady backstage. If he was gonna Tweet something else, he should have done an “Oops!”. That’s it. Just “Oops!” This simple Tweet would have not only acknowledged the miscue, but more importantly, it would have put HIM in CONTROL of the NARRATIVE (sorry to shout… this stuff makes me crazy!)

Let me take a minute and rant about these folks in the public eye… if you DO NOT have media training, please, please, PLEASE stay your happy ass off Twitter.

      • creolechild

Hey Sag! Thanks for the recap. So, in other words his feelings is hurt cuz he got clowned. Well, alrighty then! Like you said, he should have just kept it moving, without all the unnecessary drama….not a good look.

Elba himself has not been shy about touting his upcoming movie.

In a recent interview with The Guardian, Elba called his version of Mandela “hands down the best.”

He went on to clarify, “Not in terms of performance…but my film’s about his entire life. Anyone wanting to understand who Mandela was should go and watch my film.”

“Morgan Freeman is outstanding. Terrence Howard is an outstanding actor. But my film is about his life,” Elba added, referring to Freeman’s 1999 movie Invictus and Howard’s depiction of Mandela in Winnie – a 2012 film which never made it to theaters.

Texas Man Being Questioned in Mail Threats to Obama, Bloomberg: Sources
A man is being questioned in Texas in connection with the threatening letters but is not considered a suspect, sources said

A person of interest is being questioned in connection with threatening letters sent to President Obama, Mayor Bloomberg and his anti-gun group, according to law enforcement officials.

Authorities were questioning the man to see if he had information related to the threatening letters, which were similar in content and bore the same postmark on the envelopes. Two of them, sent to Bloomberg and Mark Glaze, the director of the anti-gun group, have tested positive for poisonous ricin. Officials were testing the letter addressed to Obama to see if it contained ricin as well.

The Texas man is described as an Army veteran who is a current civilian employee with the Department of Defense. He has connections to Shreveport, La. and to Texas but is not considered a suspect at this time, the sources said.

The threatening letter mailed to President Obama was received Wednesday at an off-site facility, and did not reach the White House, according to the Secret Service.

“This letter has been turned over to the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force for testing and investigation,” said Brian Leary, a Secret Service spokesman.

The text of that mailing was identical to the letters sent to the mayor and his gun group, which threatened: “what’s in this letter is nothing compared to what I’ve got planned for you,” police and law enforcement sources said. A photo of the letter sent to Bloomberg, obtained by NBC 4 New York, is pictured below.

I mean it’s a freakin Cheerious commercial and the little girl is as cute as a button.

What is it about Black men and White women that scare the hell out of white people so much.

        • Aquagranny911

That little chica reminds me of my granddaughter & the bigots can STFU!!!

          • Tafr

Ahh AG does your granddaughter have the little pom pom pig tails??? I bet she is adorable.

          • Aquagranny911

She has what she calls “ear puffs” although SIL’s Auntie godmother has been visiting & braiding her hair in some traditional African ways. They sent me some pics & she looks adorable that way too but I do love the “ear puffs.”

        • Tafr

I bet you most of the bitching came from white men. Some of them are so damn intimidated by black men. Yes that little girl is cute as she wants to be.

          • conlakappa

And wants her black father to live healthy. O the horror! This is a big leap for General Mills, which used to be pretty risk averse and very Middle America. But we all know that is Middle America now.

I’ve seen another ad with a white couple, two children, one of whom is Asian and doesn’t appear to be just visiting. Finally, recognition that families are represented so many ways.

        • MsKitty

And yet I saw someone black on twitter complaining that because it was a black man/white woman pairing that this was painting black women as undesirable.

The fact that folks are losing their minds over this ad on both sides of the racial divide shows me this country doesn’t have a clue. I’ve been seeing ads with interracial families for years in other countries (the UK immediately comes to mind), so it’s been way overdue here.

    • Tafr

LOL they are so damn stupid. I grew up in rural MO with a bunch of racist, the school was on that racist BS hard. The teachers, the staff, the principal all racist as they want to be. The school was lily white, you could count the black kids on one hand.

I went back to visit family a couple of years ago and had a good laugh at all the mixed kids going to that school. I asked my grandma where the hell did all these mixed kids come from? Funny because some of those white girls that I went to school with got them black boyfriends when they went off to college. Most of them moved back home after college which is why there are so many mixed kids running around there. I had to laugh because I know some of them women got with black men to piss their daddy off. So these racist can be mad all they want but interracial relationships and the children they produce are here to stay.

Was Chris Hayes a Bad Bet for MSNBC?
By Chez Pazienza · May 30,2013

Consider this advance warning: If you’re a big fan of Chris Hayes’s show on MSNBC, or maybe simply someone who laments the tragic dearth of intelligent, thoughtful programming on cable news in general, you may want to start planning your 140-character-long expressions of outrage now. I say this because if things keep going the way they are, Hayes’s All In will be history by the end of the year. Now before anybody loses their mind at me, I’m not saying this because I don’t have an appreciation for the show and for what Hayes is trying to bring to the cable news prime-time landscape. It’s simply a matter of TV physics: If the ratings aren’t there, the show goes away. And unfortunately for Hayes, the ratings absolutely aren’t there.

When MSNBC made the decision to give Chris Hayes what’s arguably the most important time-slot at the network, I praised both the chance the network was taking on Hayes, an exhaustively depth-prone policy wonk by any measure, and what it seemed to say about the kind of network MS wanted to be moving forward. While it was obvious from the beginning that Hayes is the sort of guy who’s incapable of dumbing himself down to appeal to a broad spectrum, I figured Phil Griffin’s plan would be to create a more workman-like show around Hayes’s erudition, essentially combining unapologetic intellectualism and thorough analysis with the kind of fast-paced production and cleverness that many viewers expected at 8pm on weeknights. When All In actually hit air, I ate my words — because it was clear right off the bat that Griffin’s even ballsier plan for the show that anchored his prime-time was to simply “let Chris be Chris” and let that carry the day. MSNBC had basically just moved Hayes’s previous weekend morning panel show to weeknights and, I guess, hoped for the best. It was an unprecedented show of faith in both Hayes and what he represented as a cable news host.

But two months after the debut of All In, the audience has yet to come to the often fascinating, yet just as often tedious, House That Chris Built. Granted, two months isn’t all that long — although in TV years it can be a lifetime — but a quick glance at the numbers that are there show no upward trend or forward momentum but rather a big loss of eyeballs. Overall, it doesn’t read or feel like the right audience just hasn’t found Chris Hayes yet; it reads and feels like the audience in general knows he’s there and just isn’t interested. That’s a problem that, for a television executive, simply can’t be overstated. Hayes is sitting on the premier piece of real estate at MSNBC, the show that exists to set the tone for the evening, and if he’s failing — well, he can’t be allowed to, let’s put it that way. No matter how much nominal backing Hayes may have from Griffin and the enlightened beings of the 30 Rock adminisphere, the situation as it stands right now cannot stand.

All In just delivered MSNBC its lowest ratings at 8pm since 2006 — and an argument can easily be made that the lack of interest in Hayes is bleeding over and infecting both Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O’Donnell, since, again, he’s their lead-in. If you think Phil Griffin isn’t trying his best to stifle full-on panic mode at this point, you truly have no appreciation for how the industry works.

The benefit of the doubt given to Hayes, by everybody and their mother, is staggering. Wow.

      Yet if it were

ALL IN with Rev. Al Sharpton

      ALL IN with Martin Bashir

ALL IN with Melissa Harris Perry

      or

      ALL IN with Joy Reid

the show would be cancelled within the week, not by the end of the year.

    – – —- Rev. Al Sharpton on Thursday interviewed the attorney representing George Zimmerman, who is charged with second degree murder in the killing of Trayvon Martin. The interview appeared on Sharpton’s MSNBC program, “Politics Nation.”

Sharpton asked Mark O’Mara about information released by the defense about Martin last week, about voice experts who have said the screams for help on the 911 calls on the night of the February 2012 shooting were not Zimmerman’s voice, and whether Sanford, Florida police erred in not initially arresting Zimmerman.
