Moving In The Right Direction: Ratio Of Unemployed Workers To Job Openings Hits Four-Year Low

Dealing yet another blow to the theory that “uncertainty” because of the so-called “fiscal cliff” was holding back the economic recovery, the ratio of unemployed workers to job openings hit a four-year low in December, according to the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. There are 3.3 unemployed workers for every available job — the lowest ratio since November 2008 — down from a high of 6.7 to 1 in July 2009. Compared to November, “employers laid off 17,000 fewer workers than in October, and posted 11,000 more job openings. Some 46,000 more workers quit their jobs — a sign they see the job market as improving.” The economy created 155,000 jobs in December, while hourly earnings also rose.

    – – – —A new Fairleigh Dickinson poll in New Jersey finds Cory Booker (D) leading Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) in a Democratic U.S. Senate primary, 42% to 20%.

Booker’s favorable rating also beats Lautenberg, 66% to 45%.

Said pollster Krista Jenkins: “These numbers suggest that some difficult days may lie ahead for the incumbent senator should he seek reelection. Senator Lautenberg’s unfavorables, coupled with voter preferences for Booker as the Democratic standard bearer in the general election, complicate the landscape for this living legend amongst New Jersey politicians.” – –

“So I’m at Wal-Mart buying a bag of dog food for my dog. While in the check-out line, a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. Why else would I be buying dog food, RIGHT??? So on impulse I told her that no, I didn’t have a dog, I was starting the Dog food Diet again, and that I probably shouldn’t because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I’d lost 50 pounds before I awakened in intensive care with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms. I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and all you do is load your pockets with food Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.) Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stepped off a curb to sniff a poodle’s butt and a car hit me. I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was laughing so hard. Better watch what you ask me and be prepared for my answer. I have all the time in the world to think of crazy things to say. Now that you’ve read this I have to confess, I copied it. Now copy and share. Make someone else laugh”

    – – –Right Wing Goes Crazy After Anti-Gay Pastor Withdraws— – –

    – – –A chorus of right-wing leaders Thursday decried the withdrawal of Pastor Louie Giglio from President Obama’s second inauguration ceremony, suggesting a left-wing conspiracy to force him off of the program. His withdrawal came a day after ThinkProgress exclusively reported that in the 1990s, Giglio had given a lengthy sermon in which he advocated for dangerous “ex-gay” therapy for gay and lesbian people, referenced a biblical passage often interpreted to require gay people be executed, and impelled Christians to “firmly respond to the aggressive agenda” and prevent the “homosexual lifestyle” from becoming accepted in society.

    Their outraged comments included:

“[T]he administration’s inclusivity only goes so far. It’s not inclusive of those who disagree with them.” [Richard Land, Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission]
    – – –SNIP — –
    – -These critics seem not to understand that respecting different opinions does not require giving a platform and a microphone to those whose promote discrimination and division. Though Pastor Giglio is completely free to believe as he chooses and to preach the harmful message of “pray away the gay” therapy, a public ceremony like the presidential inauguration is not the place for him to do so.

An Imus Guest Says No More
By Ana Marie Cox Thursday, Apr. 12, 2007

Every time I’ve been on Don Imus’ show, he has reminded listeners that he “discovered” me. It’s not exactly hyperbole. He first invited me on when I was just a foulmouthed blogger who ran the gossipy political site Wonkette. As I recall, my first on-air conversation with him was about the Bush twins, or, as I called them, “Jenna and Not-Jenna.” Last fall I became a regular guest and took up slightly more serious topics (on my last appearance we talked about Senator John McCain’s Baghdad trip and Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani’s lack of social graces), but the subjects hardly mattered. I had been invited inside the circle, and to be perfectly honest, I was thrilled to be there.

As the invites kept coming, I found myself succumbing to the clubhouse mentality that Imus both inspires and cultivates. Sure, I cringed at his and his crew’s race-baiting (the Ray Nagin impersonations, the Obama jokes) and at the casual locker-room misogyny (Hillary Clinton’s a “bitch,” CNN news anchor Paula Zahn is a “wrinkled old prune”), but I told myself that going on the show meant something beyond inflating my precious ego. I wasn’t alone. As Frank Rich noted a few years ago, “It’s the only show … that I’ve been on where you can actually talk in an informed way — not in sound bites.” Yeah, what he said!

This is one of the bills that PBO signed into law today.

H.R. 6014, the “Katie Sepich Enhanced DNA Collection Act of 2012,” which authorizes the Justice Department to carry out a grant program to assist States with the first-year costs associated with the implementation of a process to collect DNA from individuals who are arrested for or charged with certain criminal offenses under State law.

    Here is the backstory:

[….] Originally introduced in 2010, Katie’s Law bears the name of Katie Sepich, a college student who was raped and murdered in 2003 in New Mexico. Her attacker was arrested several times over subsequent years but was never linked to Katie’s murder, as his DNA was not collected until 2006.[….] The Katie Sepich Enhanced DNA Collection Act of 2012, also known as Katie’s Law, establishes a program to provide grants to states which implement DNA collection programs for arrestees of murder, sexual assault, kidnapping, burglary, and aggravated assault. States are authorized to collect DNA for a larger subset of crimes but must do so for those felony arrests. While this new law does not authorize any new funding, it uses funding sources within the Debbie Smith DNA Backlog Reduction Act and specifies that up to $10 million in each fiscal year from 2013 to 2015 may go to grants to states under Katie’s law.[….]

More Big Trouble for WalMart’s Exploitative Profit Model

The courts have apparently figured out WalMart’s super sneaky strategy of domestic outsourcing (contracting out parts its U.S.-based supply chain to other companies to skirt responsibility for labor infractions), which could produce a host of legal troubles for the nation’s largest company. A federal judge has ruled that WalMart can be included in the impending warehouse workers’ class-action lawsuit about a plethora of alleged labor abuses, which occurred in a WalMart warehouse in Southern California.[….]

This decision, coupled with the wave of strikes in the U.S. and in nearly a dozen countries abroad, has begun to threaten WalMart’s policy of domestic outsourcing and contracting, which has been a cornerstone of its business plan. In a separate issue, the company’s international dealings have come under fire after a policy of widespread corruption and bribery in Mexico was revealed earlier this winter.[….]

Vice President Joe Biden’s presentation on how the Obama administration plans to address gun violence in the United States was interrupted today by news of yet another school shooting. This one happened in a school that has “a uniform deputy sheriff monitoring campus ‘before, during and after school.’”

At least one person (possibly two) was shot at Taft Union High School in Taft, California (120 miles northwest of Los Angeles, 30 miles west-southwest of Bakersfield) this morning. The student who was shot is reported to have been airlifted to a Bakersfield hospital. Some reports say a second victim (possibly a teacher) denied medical care. The shooter, who is believed to be a student, was taken into custody at about 9:20 AM.

S Africa: rising new consumers to start spending?
    Jan 8, 2013 4:53pm by Irene Madongo

The growth of South Africa’s black middle class has been a dynamic boost for the economy, attracting local and foreign investment, and now the country’s consumer landscape could shift forward as another new emerging consumer segment takes shape in the lower social ranks.

According to Annabel Bishop, chief economist for the Investec Group in South Africa, and author of the report Investec SA’s Macro Economic Outlook 2013-17, people in South Africa’s lower class could progressively rise from being dependent on welfare and earning nothing to having a rise in income, forming a new consumer class.

“You have a situation where households in the lower income levels are dependent on social welfare and in the long term improvements in education should allow many to move out of unemployment into formal sector employment, and eventually become financially independent from the state,” Bishop explains, “[This] means obviously that their income levels will rise significantly, and compared to where they are now, which is nothing, and from that point of view then they would obviously create a new segment, a new consumer spending market.”

“They are not there yet, but they are starting to come about,” she explains.

“By 2017 there are going to be a lot more people who are earning more money that will grow that emerging consumer class.”

    Obama nominates Lew for Treasury
    By Steve Benen

    Thu Jan 10, 2013 2:15 PM EST

That said, it’s worth considering why, exactly, the GOP has come to dislike Lew so much that some Senate Republicans started announcing their opposition to his nomination before he was even introduced.

The answer, it appears, is that GOP leaders see him as too competent and knowledgeable, which has gotten in the way of Republican plans.

The New York Times had a fascinating piece last year on the 2011 debt-ceiling crisis negotiations, and House Speaker John Boehner’s frustrations that Lew had a “detailed knowledge of the budget” that “outpaced anyone else’s in the room.” It got to the point that Boehner kept trying to get Lew out of the room, in the hopes that it’d be easier to strike a GOP-friendly deal.

    Matt Yglesias explained last April:

Any time Lew, the math guy, was out of the room [the Republican proposal] could look like a promising approach. But if the math guy kept saying the central tenet of the proposal was founded on bad math, then actually no progress was being made. So for a time Boehner got the math guy out of the room and it looked like progress was getting made. But clearly the president of the United States isn’t going to agree to a budget deal without running it by his budget director and, indeed, it turned out that “the framework negotiated by Obama, Daley, and Geithner — and laid out in the Republicans’ offer sheet — unsettled the stomachs of some White House aides” one of whom I’m going to guess was Lew. As Bai tells it, as soon as the deal exited that room it immediately started deflating.

So, Republicans hate Lew the same way a con man hates the guy who knows how a con works.

GOP members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee promise that Clinton will face a “tough but respectful” grilling when she testifies about the Obama administration’s handling of the Sept. 11, 2012, attack on U.S. diplomatic facilities in Libya that killed four Americans.

A couple of weekends ago, Daniel Marans of Social Security Works, a group ostensibly working to “protect” Social Security, and I had a debate on Take Action Radio’s Take Action News with David Shuster (Marans is also Executive Producer of the show) on Social Security, mainly focusing on Chained CPI. You can see the debate clips here (part 1) and here (part 2). He and I will be on again at 1:45 pm ET this Saturday.

Marans has penned an op-ed in Professional Left’s favorite corporate-sold link gatherer, the AOL-Huffington Post. In his piece, Daniel Marans goes back and re-litigates the issues we debated, and tries to tell me why I’m wrong. I’ll go through the most important points, but let’s start at the Professional alarmists’ bold, new idea on the ‘tactics’ we need to follow to fix Social Security’s long term funding shortfall: wait till there’s a Republican president, perhaps in the mold of Ronald Regan.

But as I said during the debate, Spandan’s assumptions were alarmist. Social Security has faced far more imminent shortfalls in the past, notably in 1983, and Congress has never failed to act to close them.
This is a little funny at least, since Daniel fails to note that as I said during the debate, what Congress and President Reagan, back in 1983, did to “act to close” the “imminent shortfalls” was something he and his organization would flatly consider a benefit cut, namely raising the Social Security retirement age. Yes, why don’t we wait till there is a Republican president to fix Social Security? The fact that the most ardent self-proclaimed defenders of Social Security have to point to this deal in 1983 as the example of why we should wait now to implement reforms in the program should tell anyone honestly following the debate that they have no real argument.

    – – – – Today was car maintenance day for me, so I missed the afternoon headlines. I see that there has been another school shooting. Five more people got shot in Philly on Monday and early Tuesday morning. Everyone freaks out about the former, but hardly anyone cares about the latter. I understand that it’s harder to take when kids get shot, but they sometimes get shot in places other than school.

Early Tuesday morning, a 17-year-old was reported in stable condition after he was shot in the leg on East Atlantic Street in Harrowgate.

It’s a big problem no matter where it happens.

    What’s Behind Africa’s Growing Popularity?

    By: Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond | Posted: January 10, 2013 at 12:52 AM

Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond writes in Ebony that Africa is experiencing something of a resurgence because, with economic woes in Europe, South America and North America, some are turning to the continent in search of fame and fortune. Is history repeating itself?

Discovery Channel’s “Jungle Gold” reality series depicts “rookie American gold miners” seeking their fortunes in “the dangerous and gold-rich jungles of Ghana” after losing everything in the 2008 real estate crash. The Washington Post recently noted a wave of Portuguese citizens heading to Mozambique, quoting one Portuguese official as saying, “Everyone is feeling the pinch of the economic crisis, and Mozambique offers a lot of opportunities … People think this is El Dorado.”

The fashion industry is also taking serious interest in not only the styles popular on the continent, but in creating strategic business alliances as well. In 2012, for the first time Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week sponsored African Fashion International’s annual event in South Africa. Likewise, Vogue Italia co-sponsored the inaugural Ghana Fashion and Design Week. Editor-in-chief Franca Sozzani reportedly “initiated distribution of African fashion products through shops in Europe and America as well as through QVC” as a UN Goodwill Ambassador of Fashion 4 Development.

Under Sozzani L’Uomo Vogue dedicated its June 2012 issue to the continent, the cover line assuming responsibility for “Rebranding Africa.” Sozzani explained in a Huffington Post piece about the issue: “Africa needs to rebuild a new image, far removed from the one the media usually convey reporting on wars and famines that, although actually occurring, are not the only side to show.”

They better watch out. Remember what happened the last time white people went in search of adventure and fortune in Africa.

    ‘Scandal’ Fans: Guilty by Association?

On social media, black women are being called hypocrites for loving ABC’s home-wrecking heroine.
    By: Kellee Terrell|Posted: January 10, 2013 at 12:37 AM

However, since the ABC show’s debut last spring, it’s obvious that Pope and her “scandalous” behavior have polarized some of us. For some black folks, myself included, Pope is a breath of fresh air, a character who is flawed, like all human beings, but nuanced and complicated — a rarity in black female representation. For others, Pope is a hypersexualized “whore” who compromises herself for men — the norm in black female representation.

But lately I’ve noticed a bothersome trend: Whether on Twitter, Facebook threads or memes being circulated to spark conversation, it’s now the character of black women who watch the show, not Olivia Pope, that is coming into question.

Since when did what we watch automatically mirror who we are or what we believe? The two are not always mutually exclusive.

I can love Claire Danes’ character Carrie Mathison on Homeland, but that doesn’t mean I agree with her morally bankrupt choices. I can adore Michael C. Hall’s title character on Dexter, but in no way does that mean I co-sign on to being a serial killer. I can even swoon over reruns of The Wire’s Idris Elba as Stringer Bell, the finest drug kingpin ever to grace the small screen; it doesn’t mean I think that selling drugs is OK.

Yet conveniently, the rules change when a black female character is involved. Now, because Pope’s behavior is deemed questionable and problematic — much of what makes up current award-winning roles — all of a sudden an indictment is handed down on our collective character for consuming these images.

Meanwhile, no one else has to live up to that same high moral standard.

Part of this nonsense plays into the old sport of pathologizing and demonizing black women. Remember the awful “Black Marriage Negotiations” and that entire “Black women are single because there is something wrong with us” conversation? Proving that we are immoral and/or unworthy never really goes away; it just reincarnates itself into different arguments within different topics.

But something else is going on.

Perhaps this hostility toward us (and Pope) is less about the fact that she is sleeping with a married man and more about the fact that black female fans are cooing over this affair she is having with a white man. Perhaps we are being punished for recognizing that while “black love” is beautiful, it’s not the only love allotted to black women.

I agree with The Root author; why are people even going there, trying to extrapolate larger meaning into the benign activity of watching television dramas. Ridiculous.

I’m watching Sister Wives on netflix right this minute, and hell to the naw am not endorsing that lifestyle (poor kids!) or the glazed-eye man these women are inexplicably sharing. But because they’re not black, no one would call out this show’s viewers or raise the morality of viewership as an issue.

Scandal is one of those shows I only watch if I happen to catch it. I can understand both sides of the argument and the concerns.
I will however say that I was pretty unimpressed with the way Kerry Washington handled the nonsensical Enquirer story of the First Lady having a list of women that are too flirty with her husband and who aren’t allowed to visit the White House. I caught this on a Jimmy Kimmel episode and again on some other show I think Chelsea Lately. And can I say again how unimpressed I was.
For someone trained in the media, she seemed to be more interested in elevating herself and her sense of importance than she was about shutting the whole thing down. A simple, this is the Enquirer doing what it does best and this is very disrespectful to the President and First lady of the United States would have sufficed. But no, she almost seemed to revel in being at the center of this nonsense and mined it for what it was worth. She went on about how she is a member of the president’s concil of the arts and humanities and that she still goes to meetings at the White House. This went on for a while and the only thing she offered and not in defense of Mrs Obama but something like have you seen ‘them’ together, ‘they’ are so in love.
Jimmy Kimmel then asked her if she was ‘cool’ with ‘Michelle’. With Chelsea Lately she Kerry raised the gossip all by herself by saying that she was ‘only sleeping with the president on the show’ and Chelsea handler asked her why she had to make that distinction. She then says that she’s ‘very political’ and people ask her ‘what that is all about’. Then Chelsea says that Kerry does more work with Mrs Obama so if there’s anyone she’s sleeping with it wouldn’t it be ‘Michelle’. My God!
Sorry but these exchanges were totally distasteful, disrespectful and uncalled for. Totally unnecessary and a great example of the whole saying about familiarity breeding contempt.
For this alone I hope Mrs Obama really does ban her from the White House for exploiting this silly Enquirer nonsense to self-promote and at her expense.

    – – – – –Right Wing Insanity Boils Over With Claim Marriage Equality Caused Noah’s Flood – —

    — – —I wrote yesterday about the Religious Right’s renewed assault on Marriage Equality. The bullshit is flying fast and furious, but there are always standouts even when it comes to “OMG Tell me you didn’t just say that” moments. Enter Pastor Scott Lively.

Lively is the president of Abiding Truth Ministries, another group considered a hate group by the SPLC, and with Kevin E. Abrams, is the author Joseph Farah’s favorite piece of pulp fiction, The Pink Swastika, as well as a supporter of gay genocide laws in Uganda.

Lively, who formerly oversaw the American Family Association’s propaganda in California (another SPLC-designated hate group), was interviewed the other day by Sandy Rios of the AFA about Marriage Equality and the End Times.

    Turns out they’re connected.

According to Lively, our culture’s embrace of equal rights for gays and lesbians will bring about the open persecution of Christians. He says this will be like the early days of the church (when no such thing occurred, as I have previously explained). In other words, he is saying that something that is not happening is going to be exactly like another thing that never happened.

If you ask, how does he know this, he will tell you that it’s because “the last straw for God before He brought [Noah’s] Flood was when they started writing wedding songs to homosexual marriage” and said homosexuality “represents the outer extent of rebellion against Him in a society and the last thing that happens before wrath comes.”

    Replacing David: Plouffe-by-committee? – – –

    — – –Obama’s right hand man in the West Wing and campaign consigliere, David Plouffe, has basically left the building, according to several White House sources who say they haven’t seen him around much since the fiscal cliff deal.

(He did stand up for a light USA Today exit interview recently, and has been helping to frame the inaugural and SOTU. But he isn’t diving into anything new, sources say, and is suffering from a bad case of senioritis).

So who replaces Obama’s (semi) irreplaceable man?

In reality, no one. But there are a few emerging clues on staffers who would assume Plouffe’s multiple roles as the top in-house adviser on communications, messaging, political strategy and freelance Obama-whispering. Think Plouffe-by-committee.

Several administration officials tell me that current Communications Director Dan Pfeiffer (who didn’t comment, and seemed annoyed by the inquiry) is likely to get an enhanced role sometime soon, and would possibly take over the messaging, comms and sounding board role that Plouffe occupied.

    – – –Quvenzhané Wallis taking best actress Oscar nod in stride – – –

    – — – Quvenzhane Wallis was experiencing something of an internal struggle when she found out she’d been nominated for an Academy Award early Thursday morning.

“I woke up, and (my mother) said, ‘You’ve been nominated! You’re nominated!’” recalls Quvenzhane (Kuh-VAHN-zuh-nay) of learning she’s up for the best actress prize at the 85th annual Oscars. “I was like, ‘Oh my God!’ But it was on the inside. It wasn’t on the outside.”

At 9 years old, the “Beasts of the Southern Wild” star is the youngest woman — ahem — girl to ever be nominated in the category.

“We were all literally losing our minds this morning, and she’s totally taking it in stride,” says “Beasts” writer-director Benh Zeitlin, who is himself nominated in the directing and adapted screenplay categories. “It’s magical. She’s just poised and fearless. I saw that the first day I ever met her when she was five. To this day, she just knows who she is, and she’s confident.”

Quvenzhane, who hails from Houma, La., about 60 miles southeast of New Orleans, was in Los Angeles Thursday to promote “Beasts” with Zeitlin, who lives in New Orleans. She was just 5 years old when she first auditioned for the film’s lead role of Hushpuppy, a little girl struggling to survive with her ailing father in the southern Delta as a storm approaches.
