GOOD MORNING P.O.U.!

We continue our series on African American Hoteliers

Rebecca Howard, an outstanding hotelier and cook, was one of Olympia, Washington’s earliest businesswomen. Born in 1827 in Philadelphia, Rebecca Groundage married Alexander Howard, a local cooper, in New Bedford, Massachusetts in 1843. By 1859 Rebecca and her husband had moved to Olympia and opened a hotel and restaurant in the Pacific House on Main Street (now Capitol Way). In 1860 Rebecca Howard advertised the building as the “Pacific Restaurant.”

Memoirs of visitors to Olympia record the fine inn keeping provided by Mrs. Howard. The Howard’s hotel and restaurant was frequented by legislators and visitors to the city including President Rutherford B. Hayes and his wife Lucy in 1880. When the building was razed in 1902, the Olympia Washington Standard said that the Pacific Hotel was the leading hotel on Puget Sound under “the ministration of Rebecca Howard, …whose wit and humor…made the Pacific an oasis in the then desert of travel.”

In June 1862, Mrs. Howard and her husband signed an agreement to take care of Isaac I. Stevens Glasgow, a part-Indian child of American settler Thomas Glasgow, who by most accounts was being mistreated by his father. The Howards officially adopted the child in 1877 and he took the name Frank A. Howard. Frank Howard became a leading citizen of the city, inheriting his adopted parents’ properties and investing in land and development.

When Rebecca Howard died in 1881, twenty-six pages were needed to enumerate her property which was valued at over $6,200.00. Alexander Howard died in 1890. Both are buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Tumwater.

Poll: Republican Guvs Trail Dem Challengers In 5 Races

    Daniel Strauss – April 9, 2014, 2:35 PM EDT13586

A new set of polls by Public Policy Polling finds Republicans on the defensive in a number of governor’s races.

The polls, conducted by the Democratic-leaning PPP on behalf of MoveOn.org found the Democratic candidates in Maine, Kansas, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Florida leading the Republican candidates.

    • In Maine PPP found Republican Gov. Paul LePage (pictured) trailing Rep. Mike Michaud (D) 37 percent to 44 percent.

    • In Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback (R) trails Democratic gubernatorial candidate Paul Davis 41 percent to 45 percent.

    • In Pennsylvania, Gov. Tom Corbett (R) is behind the generic potential Democratic candidate by double digits. PPP found Corbett trailing the generic candidate 56 percent to 34 percent.

    • In the Georgia gubernatorial race, state Sen. Jason Carter (D) just barely leads Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) 43 percent to 42 percent.

    • In Florida, former Gov. Charlie Crist (D) leads Gov. Rick Scott (R), 49 percent to 42 percent.

    • Alma98

It’ll stay this way if dems stay on message and gotv. I believe Walker is trailing Burke and not tied with her. We know polls have a tendency to fluff up repubs in polls.

      • jds09

Unfortunately, I can just imagine the ads: a sympathetic family who lost a loved one due to lack of medical care.It will only take one angry grieving family in each state.

      • jziglar

But like I said yesterday if the republicans are doing so well in 2014 why are they in jeopardy of losing several governor seats ? And if a vulnerable democrat like Pryor is up by 3 points in red Arkansas then there is no indication that 2014 will be a wave election.

    • TresL

I can’t believe the people of Wisconsin are going to re-elect Walker after those huge protests against his union busting moves; not to mention his KOCH addiction.

  • Miranda

Anyone ever think I’m making it up when I say the sports media is filled with conservative right wingers that live to bash black athletes – well listen to any local sports radio show today and you will see them for all they are….bashing Hank Aaron. That’s the topic and that’s what they want the callers to do – and they are obliging, believe it.

    • rikyrah

we knew it was gonna happen.
      no doubt at all.
bitter mofos who are still mad about Aaron breaking the record.

    • Alma98

Not surprised at all, hell some of them probably were one the people who threatened Hank back then.

    • Kennymack1971

Not shocking. Hank Aaron committed a cardinal sin against the GOP. They’re perfectly happy appealing to White racial resentment and Obama Derangement Syndrome. What you’re not supposed to do is point that out (ESPECIALLY if you’re Black). So I’m not at all shocked they’re coming for Hank Aaron. They are what we thought they were. But we ain’t letting their asses off the hook. Not anymore.

    • jds09

I’m a member of the school of thought that Babe Ruth was passing. Just look the pictures. If so, this is hilarious on so many levels.

    • Alma98

I had a thought, who is going to be the first jackass from the whpc to ask PBO about it? Cause you PBO is responsible for all black folks opinions and such.

      • jziglar

Hell, according to them President Obama is responsible for everything.

      • Kennymack1971

This one sounds like a job for Ed Henry.

        • Alma98

LOL we need to have pool like we do for football for stuff like this.

          • Admiral_Komack

Hmmmmm…….I’m thinking it will be April Ryan.

        • Alma98

I can see that ass kisser doing it too.

    • jziglar

Well the majority of them are middle age white men, and that demographic tends to lean conservative. Like you I’m not surprised because as soon as he made those comments I knew that they would attack him. They can’t stand anyone telling the truth.

    • Daltex82

Mr. Aaron told the truth about their racist asses and for them nothing burns like being told the truth about themselves.

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

I knew white people decades after Aaron broke the record that still resented it.

    • AxelFoley

They should know by now that Hank has absolutely NO fucks to give. And we WILL whoop they ass for going after him.

    • TresL

I just don’t get why they’re so offended. They seem to be such proud racists!

The Disingenuous Leftist Defense of Vladimir Putin (No, Crimea is Not the Same as Iraq)

    Spandan Chakrabarti| April 9, 2014

The ideologue Left – more aptly referred to as the emoprog cadre – a meltdown over President Obama’s comments in Brussels, part of which took on the callous, fundamentalist, and anti-American talking point spread by Russia and its allies that the United States’ invasion of Iraq makes it hypocritical for Americans to now criticize Russian annexation of Ukraine. President Obama, reiterating both that he opposed the American invasion of Iraq and that he’s the president that withdrew American troops from Iraq, nonetheless laid out the prima facie case why Russia’s assertions held no merit.

Nothing exemplified the Left’s latest jump-all-over-Obama phrase than Common Dreams’ hair on fire bloviating about Obama “defend[ing] US invasion of Iraq” – something the President, you would be shocked to learn, never did. This is the passage of the President’s speech to European youth that seems to have sparked so much Leftist poutrage at home:

Holder says GOP treats him differently
By Mario Trujillo April 10, 2014, 08:49 am

Attorney General Eric Holder on Wednesday castigated House Republicans for their treatment of him.

During a speech in front of a civil rights group founded by Al Sharpton, Holder said the administration has made significant strides “even in the face, of unprecedented, unwarranted, ugly and divisive adversity.”

“Forget about me, you look at the way the attorney general of the United States was treated yesterday by a House committee — it has nothing to do with me, forget that,” Holder told those attending the National Action Network convention in New York. “What attorney general has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment? What president has ever had to deal with that kind of treatment?”

    • rikyrah

if there is any more clear indication that the AG is on the NFTG train, his speech yesterday is it.
he is DONE with these clowns.

      • jds09

As they say “timing is everything”, Holder’s comments are purposeful. This administration is gonna buck conventional wisdom (and its historical precedents) and swing for the fences on their way out. Continuing the use of sports metaphors… they are gonna leave it ALL on the court. I am here for this.

      • Kennymack1971

    — –The number of people who applied for U.S. unemployment benefits last week fell to a nearly seven-year low of 300,000, a sign the labor market might be experiencing a spring revival. Initial claims in the seven days ended April 5 sank by 32,000 from a revised 332,000 in the prior week, the Labor Department said Thursday. The last time claims were that low was in May 2007, six months before the Great Recession began. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected claims to total a seasonally adjusted 320,000. The average of new claims over the past month dropped by 4,750 to 316,250, marking the second lowest read since the end of the recession. The monthly figure smooths out the jumpiness in the weekly data and offers a better look at underlying labor-market trends. Also, the government
said continuing claims decreased by 62,000 to a seasonally adjusted 2.78 million in the week ended March 29. Continuing claims reflect the number of people already receiving benefits. Initial claims from two weeks ago were revised up to 332,000 from 326,000

Opposition to Medicaid Expansion Killing Republican Governors’ 2014 Election Hopes

    By: Keith Brekhus
    Thursday, April, 10th, 2014, 8:44 am

Forget the media narratives that say Democrats could lose because of their support for Obamacare. While that convenient narrative is easy for beltway reporters to regurgitate, it is not supported by polling evidence. Polling data suggests that contrary to the dominant narrative, health care is a winning issue for Democrats not Republicans. This has become especially apparent in the many contests or the state house across the country.

Recent polling done by Public Policy Polling (PPP) shows that five incumbent Republican Governors who oppose Medicaid expansion are in danger o losing their bids or re-election. Not surprisingly, Maine Republican Paul LePage and Pennsylvania Republican Tom Corbett trail in their bids for re-election as their right-wing policies are far out of line with their blue-leaning electorates. However, even in Georgia and Kansas, Republican incumbents are losing to Democratic challengers. Even in these deep red states, a solid majority of voters want their Governors to expand Medicaid.

No Governor has made opposition to Medicaid expansion more a cornerstone of his campaign than Rick Scott in Florida. Yet, by a 58-33 margin, Florida voters want their Governor to accept the federal funding for Medicaid expansion. More than four in ten Florida voters say Rick Scott’s dogmatic opposition to Medicaid expansion makes them less likely to vote or him. In a head to head match-up with Democrat Charlie Crist, Rick Scott is losing 49-42 percent. GOP opposition to Medicaid expansion will prove to be Rick Scott’s undoing.

    http://www.politicususa.com/2014/04/10/opposition-medicaid-expansion-killing-republican-governors-2014-election-hopes.html

    • Miranda

I’m trying to understand why its killing these GOP Governors chances, but not the US Senators that would also never expand medicaid for the citizens they represent.

      • Alma98

So true Miranda, so true. Why kick out one without the other.

      • jds09

Maybe it’s because folks (reasonable republicans that are hiding out as independents) see governors as “executives”, “top dogs”, “decision makers” and in their authoritian mindsets hold them responsible. Senators may be seen only as the necessary “check and balance” not directly tied to major policies. I’m just guessing.

I guess ain’t nothing like watching people in other states (perhaps friends and relatives) getting something that you’re not.

King may switch sides and join the Republicans after midterms
By Alexander Bolton – 04/10/14 06:00 AM EDT

Sen. Angus King (I-Maine), who caucuses with the Democrats, will decide after the midterm elections whether to switch sides and join the Republicans.

He is leaving open the possibility of aligning himself with the GOP if control of the upper chamber changes hands.

“I’ll make my decision at the time based on what I think is best for Maine,” King told The Hill Wednesday after voting with Republicans to block the Paycheck Fairness Act, a measure at the center for the 2014 Democratic campaign agenda.

King’s remarks are a clear indication that congressional leaders on both sides of the aisle will have to woo the 70-year-old senator in order to recruit him to their side.

MSNBC Forbids Ed Schultz From Dem Fundraiser But Allows Joe Scarborough to Raise GOP Cash

    By: Jason Easley
    Wednesday, April, 9th, 2014, 3:47 pm

The MSNBC double standard is on full display as the network made Ed Schultz cancel an appearance at a Democratic fundraiser, but is allowing Joe Scarborough to speak at a Republican cash grab.

In December of 2013, Ed Schultz was scheduled to be the keynote speaker at a fundraiser for the Broward Democratic Party’s big Unity Dinner in Florida, but he was forced by his bosses at MSNBC to cancel the appearance and claim that he didn’t know it was a fundraiser.

However, Republican Joe Scarborough is being allowed to deliver a keynote address for Cheshire County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner in New Hampshire in May. The fundraiser that Scarborough is appearing at costs $50 per person, and all of the money goes to the Republican Party.

So it appears the Beltway Village is quite perturbed about the Paycheck Fairness Act and the GOP being on the wrong side of an issue..again.They’re so upset SharptonWasAnFBIInformantGate hasn’t seemed to catch fire. Expect ass showing of epic proportions when the President delivers his remarks in a few hours. So much fail, so little time.

    • Alma98

It really is something to behold. They hate PBO so much that they root Putin and for this country and it’s people to fail. Just sickening!

      • Kennymack1971

They’d rather watch this country burn than have a Black man succeed at leading it. And ever since the voters told Mitt and Miss Ann to get the hell on in 2012 the masks are off now. A classic case of “If we can’t have it no one can!”

        • Alma98

          ICAM Kennymack!

        • TresL

That’s a perfect analogy. The GOP/media is that abusive boyfriend/husband who is enraged when his woman (America) leaves his ass for a better man (PBO) and decides if I can’t have you, he won’t either. Sick bastards; all of them!

      • jziglar

The media has been infiltrated by right wing conservatives. You can tell that media coverage started to shift around the late 80′s to early 90′s.

They went after the Clinton’s hard during the 90′s but the treatment they got doesn’t even compare to the hate and racism that the Obama’s have received from the start. And no matter what topic like the legacy of LBJ, they have to compare it to Obama. They try to re-write history and gloss over key facts in order to diminish the stature of the President. LBJ did great things but he was president during a time when the democrats virtually controlled everything, and the republican party was diverse with moderates, liberals, and some sane conservatives. It was easy to cut deals with both parties during those times. It’s like comparing apples to oranges but our media keeps on doing it.

      • Miranda

I’ve never forgotten how the assholes CHEERED when Chicago wasn’t awarded the Olympic games.

        • Alma98

Oh there’s a lot I sure as hell won’t forget.

    • rikyrah

The whole Sharpton was an FBI Informant didn’t catch on because:
      1. in 99% of the country, the Mob is NOT seen as a Charity Organization
      2. this being true, then it puts a lie to the other slander that was against Rev. Al for decades was ‘ Rev. Al is not American.’
What’s more American than helping the G-Men take down mobsters?
You see why the combination of the two makes this a scandal that won’t hunt.

      • TresL

Unless you’re a mobster or routing for mobsters, it was never a scandal to begin with. LOL!

Scarborough: Obama And Holder Should Stop Playing The Race Card (VIDEO)

    Tom Kludt – April 10, 2014, 9:55 AM EDT

Joe Scarborough said Thursday that the Obama administration plays the race card too often when addressing its critics.

A day after Attorney General Eric Holder said in a speech that he and President Obama have dealt with unprecedented levels of criticism, MSNBC’s resident conservative mocked Holder for suggesting that racism is at play.

“Because of racism, I mean, Holder, that’s what Holder suggested, the attorney general suggested yesterday, right?” Scarborough asked Politico’s John Harris.

“There’s no question,” Harris said. “That’s what he’s trying to get at. I don’t see any other reading of it.”

    From there, Scarborough was off.

He argued that Holder, the first sitting attorney general to be held in contempt of Congress, has received the same treatment as Janet Reno, the attorney general under Bill Clinton.

UPS Rehires 250 Workers After Firing Them For Protesting
The Huffington Post | by Kevin Short
Posted: 04/10/2014 11:05 am EDT Updated: 04/10/2014 11:05 am EDT

UPS, one of the country’s largest shipping and logistics companies, has reached an agreement to give 250 New York-based drivers their jobs back. The workers were dismissed last month after protesting the firing of a longtime co-worker.

The deal was struck following Wednesday’s negotiations between top executives at the delivery company and union representatives from the International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 804, according to the NY Daily News.

The agreement will restore the jobs of those who protested the firing of longtime coworker Jairo Reyes in February. Reyes was fired after a dispute over the number of hours senior staff were able to work.

As part of the agreement, the workers will receive a 10-day, unpaid suspension. The union also will pay UPS for damages from the lost productive time.
    ……………………………………………………

During recent weeks, more than 100,000 people have signed petitions calling on UPS to rehire the workers. On one day, more than 3,000 supporters called UPS CEO D. Scott Davis to complain about the firings, according to Joe Dinkin, the communications director at the Working Families Party, a progressive politics group that mobilized support for the employees.

    This again?

40-50 House Republicans Are Plotting To Overthrow John Boehner Before Year’s End

Several dozen frustrated House conservatives are scheming to infiltrate the GOP leadership next year—possibly by forcing Speaker John Boehner to step aside immediately after November’s midterm elections.

But there’s a more audacious option on the table, according to
conservatives involved in the deliberations. They say between 40 and 50 members have already committed verbally to electing a new speaker. If those numbers hold, organizers say, they could force Boehner to step aside as speaker in late November, when the incoming GOP conference meets for the first time, by showing him that he won’t have the votes to be reelected in January.

    http://www.politicususa.com/2014/04/10/40-50-house-republicans-plotting-overthrow-john-boehner-years.html

Really? 40 or 50. Like the 40 or 50 that have been whining since 2011? Every other month we get this Boehner is doomed memo. He’s only doomed if Nancy wins back the gavel. Other than that he’s Republican speaker for life.

50 Republicans attempting an insurgency of a Speaker with 183 votes in his pocket is a non starter but for some weird reason the media pretends this is news no matter how many times it’s been played.

Fear of becoming a racial minority makes white Americans more conservative: study

Thinking About a Majority-Minority Shift Leads to More Conservative Views

Facing the prospect of racial minority groups becoming the overall majority in the United States leads White Americans to lean more toward the conservative end of the political spectrum, according to research published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

The findings suggest that increased diversity in the United States could actually lead to a wider partisan divide, with more White Americans expressing support for conservative policies.

Psychological scientists Maureen Craig and Jennifer Richeson of Northwestern University noticed a substantial amount of media attention when predictions were made that the “majority-minority” population shift would happen in 2050 or sooner.

“We wondered how this kind of ‘us-vs-them’ framing would be perceived by members of the current majority,” says Craig.

Craig and Richeson first examined data from 369 White participants who had described themselves as politically unaffiliated in a national Pew Research survey.

Good morning POU. I see the latest meme by the presstitutes is that the women on PBO, and some Democratic senators, is not equal to their male counterparts. Oh, wait…look what we have here.

Analysis: Top White House Women Out-Earn Their Male Colleagues

Thursday that although an American Enterprise Institute study
showed that female staffers earned 88 cents for every dollar their male counterparts earned last year, the salary data also showed that women actually out-earned men among the highest-paid White House staffers.

Based on the same 2013 salary data, the Examiner found that 70 of the 150 White House staffers making more than $100,000 were women. Those top female aides earned $128,600 on average compared to $120,600 for top male aides, the publication found.

As the Examiner pointed out, those salary figures represent an
increase in the number and percentage of women in top-earning White House positions over the last two years.[....]

Dotster 3 from the Obama Diary mentioned that The View had former NBA player Greg Anthony who is a black republican and he says that he has always been a republican and that he voted for Obama in 2008 because of the historical nature, and then went back to the good guys in 2012.

I noticed that the media is working over time to show the 1 % of the black population that are republicans. A troll (white lady) on Eclectablog was going on and on about the growth of the tea party movement and how blacks were flocking away form the democrats because they are the party of slavery. This stuff is so lame but they have to try.

Rupert Murdoch Reveals His Top Choices For 2016, Says He ‘Could Live With Hillary’

    Tom Kludt – April 10, 2014, 12:09 PM EDT

Billionaire media tycoon Rupert Murdoch provided a wish list for the 2016 presidential race in a rare interview published Thursday.

Murdoch told Fortune that his top choices are “between four or five people.”

“It’s not necessarily, although slightly, in order of preference: Jeb Bush, Paul Ryan, whom I have particular admiration for. I do for both. [Chris] Christie could recover,” he said. “Scott Walker, whom I don’t know, and Rand Paul, whom I agree with on a great number of things but disagree strongly on some things — too strongly perhaps to vote for him.”

Murdoch said he disagrees with Paul most strongly on foreign policy. He then detailed what he likes so much about Bush and Ryan.

His kind words for Ryan come as no surprise. After the Wisconsin congressman was tapped to be Mitt Romney’s running mate in 2012, Murdoch hailed it as an “almost perfect choice.”

Rangel: The Tea Party Came To Power In Slave-Holding States (VIDEO)

    Tom Kludt – April 10, 2014, 11:17 AM EDT408

Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) doesn’t think it’s a coincidence that many of President Obama’s harshest critics reside in the states that made up the Confederacy.

The New York congressman, who’s never hesitated to accuse the tea party of racism, said Thursday that he’s been dismayed by the level of opposition the Obama administration has faced.

“So it seems to me that if you were to follow where the slave-holding states were and where the Confederate flag flown, you will see even today not only Obama’s most serious critics but those people that don’t abide by the Voting Rights Act even today,” Rangel told MSNBC’s Chris Jansing. “So it’s a painful thing to see that with all of the progress we’ve made that a handful of people with so much hatred in their heart are willing to take this great Congress and country down because of that.”

Dem Senator Defends Koch Brothers: ‘They’re Not Breaking The Law’ (VIDEO)

    Caitlin MacNeal – April 10, 2014, 12:25 PM EDT

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) on Thursday morning defended the Koch brothers, the wealthy conservative donors who have been repeatedly bashed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) on the Senate floor.

“People want jobs. You don’t beat up people. I mean, I don’t agree with their politics or philosophically, but, you know, they’re Americans, they’re doing — paying their taxes,” Manchin said on “Fox and Friends” when host Brian Kilmeade asked if Reid’s speeches criticizing the Koch brothers “helps or hurts the cause for the country and for Congress.”

“They’re not breaking the law. They’re providing jobs,” Manchin continued.

The senator said that criticizing the Koch brothers is not going to help Democrats with voters.

“If you’re trying to rally the base, the bases have already been rallied. The right and left bases have been rallied,” Manchin said. “It’s us in the middle that have to start making something happen here in Washington to move this country forward.”

Dubin said the policy change was in “direct response” to an inquiry to the Elections Department about whether they had assessed accessibility of polling place bathrooms to those with disabilities.

“I was expecting them to say either yes we have or yes we will,” Dubin said. Instead, he received a written response announcing that the county would close all restrooms at polling places “to ensure that individuals with disabilities are not treated unfairly,” a January email stated.[....] The state’s next-most populous counties, Broward and Palm Beach, told the Sun Sentinel they would not implement this policy.

    • qosine

      Oh, this won’t go away.

    • Alma98

So they made laws to cause longer lines and wait time for minority voters. And now they’ve made a law to keep voters from going to the bathroom. They are trying everything to keep folks from voting. To hell with it I’d have to bring me a receptacle to pee in then.

      • MsKitty

Maybe they can start supplying Depends at voter registration drives. Sad to say I’m not even joking.

        What year is this again?

This is just friggin unbelievable! Low down dirty cheating mofos. It seems like this should be illegal. With all the voter suppression tactics that they are implementing I hope it backfires and Floridians turn out in record numbers. Folks should send a clear message and make Florida bluer than blue.

So @suey_park gets death threats and Stephen Colbert gets letterman. Who was being silenced again?

    • Miranda

      No they have not.

Ya know, I’m really starting to be irritated with the “I got death threats, rape threats, called names” from folks on twitter. Duh…20 million people having access to what you tweet and yeah, a whole lot of fanboys of various nitwit factions will say some foul shit. No, I can’t tell you which are actual threats and which are undeniably just some lonely fools which would be mortified if their own Mama saw what they wrote – but I doubt any of the people complaining about what tweets mentioned them are hovering under a bed or not going outside for fear of who’s in the bushes. You don’t have to look at your mentions every five minutes, or for that matter, who the hell cares? Why give a shit who mentioned you? The people complaining all the freaking time are trying to get noticed and thus they hype up their “threats”, otherwise who would even care.

      • qosine

        When everything’s a wolf, then . . .
        well, you know, Miranda.

      • itgurl_29

And this is the thing about social media threats. Unless you’re the President of the United States, 99 percent of twitter threats are just that, threats. So you know what? Give up social media for a while. These people don’t understand that there is a line between the real world and the internet. You can get off of it if you want.

    • MsKitty

I’m guessing these folks don’t get out much.

IRS planned to crack down on Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS before scandal blew up

A GOP-led House committee voted Wednesday to seek criminal charges against former IRS official Lois Lerner, who used to run the IRS division in charge of tax-exempt groups.[....] But the documents released by the committee do shed some light on the inner workings of the IRS’s Exempt Organizations division and how it approached applications of social welfare nonprofits[....] Here are the top five takeaways ProPublica found from the documents:

    1. The IRS planned to deny the application of Crossroads GPS.[...]

    2. The IRS also planned to deny the applications of other
conservative groups that had spent on elections after telling the IRS they wouldn’t do so.[....]

    3. The IRS really is not equipped to police elections — and knows it.[....]

    4. Most new liberal groups don’t apply to the IRS.[....]

    5. Lerner may have considered applying to work at a leading liberal social welfare nonprofit.[....]

In today’s congressional “lets waste time” moment:

House Passes Ryan Budget With Big Cuts
    WASHINGTON April 10, 2014
    By ANDREW TAYLOR Associated Press

The House on Wednesday passed a GOP budget blueprint that promises a balanced federal ledger in 10 years by making sweeping cuts across the federal budget and eliminating health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act.

The 219-205 vote on the nonbinding framework takes a mostly symbolic swipe at the government’s chronic deficits. Follow-up legislation to actually implement the cuts isn’t in the cards. Twelve Republicans opposed the measure, and not a single Democrat supported it.

The plan by Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., would cut more than $5 trillion over the coming decade to reach balance by 2024. The sharpest cuts would come to health care programs for the poor and uninsured, food stamps, and array of domestic programs, including Pell Grants, education, and community development grants.

Climate change just reshaped America’s wildfire strategy

Rising temperatures and declining rain and snowfall are parching fire-prone areas and juicing conflagrations. On Thursday, following years of meetings and scientific reviews, the Obama administration published a 101-page strategy that aims to help meet the country’s shifting fire threats. The National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy divides the nation according to fire risks, and profiles the communities that face those risks.[....]

Despite covering 70,000 communities and 46 million homes, the
strategy can be boiled down to guidelines that aim to do three
main things: restore and maintain landscapes that are resilient to fire; brace communities and infrastructure for occasional blazes; and help officials make wise decisions about how and whether flames should be doused. Here’s what that all looks like in flowchart form:[....]

SAC Record $1.8 Billion Insider Plea Caps 7-Year Probe

SAC Capital Advisors LP’s landmark $1.8 billion settlement of a U.S. government insider-trading probe stretching back to 2007 was approved by a federal judge, bringing to an end the hedge fund’s role as a money manager and capping a decade of insider-trading cases.

SAC Capital, which this week changed its name to Point72 Asset Management LP, pleaded guilty to reaping hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal profits and fostering a culture of criminality that encouraged brazen insider trading by its employees. Though never able to charge or even sue founder Steven A. Cohen, the government managed to snare eight current or former employees through guilty pleas and trial convictions.[....]

    http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/04/10/sean-hannity-inflames-brewing-range-war-between-feds-militia-over-nv-cattle-roundup/

This is such BS & Hannity is inciting big trouble. That rancher should be jailed. The Cattleman’s Association is not supporting this at all! Most ranchers here understand the need for range fees which are minimal & necessary for the use of public land. Plus they know that over grazing on fragile desert lands benefits no one in the long run.

This caca is another shot across the bow for the continued ugly from the goatfiggers as we get closer to elections. My BP is rising!

    • qosine

Thanks for this info. I read this guy claims 600K acres from 1870s or so. How does this work? What are the private vs.
public lands distinctions obligations, responsibilities? Are
these contractual arrangements set up long ago, updated
by changing ecological, commercial, federal-state concerns?
He seems like such a Koch/libertarian poster child.

      • Aquagranny911

The land he is whining about is public range land in addition to his 600 acres. This land is public land, always has been & open to others for use. His range fee is about $1.35 or so per head of cattle that graze. Not a big expense at all. He hasn’t paid his range fees in over 20 years so now with penalties he owes about a million to the US Gov & they want to collect.

The way I understand it is that the local BLM (Bureau of Land Management) has been letting him slide due his gun crazed behavior. Apparently he has shot at a couple of BLM rangers in the past. These dudes don’t get paid enough to subject themselves to mortal combat. I’m thinking that the big guys in Washington want to collect what this mooching parasite owes by seizing his cattle. Plus he is over grazing & a threat to a very fragile habitat.

        • rikyrah

          so…..he didn’t pay it for 20 years…
and now that the bill has come due, he wants to whine about it?
