Thursday Open Thread: African American Suffragists

GOOD MORNING P.O.U.!

We continue our series on African American Women in the Suffrage Movement

DAISY ELIZABETH ADAMS LAMPKIN
(August 9, 1883–March 10, 1965)

lampkin

Daisy Elizabeth Adams Lampkin (August 9, 1883–March 10, 1965) was an American suffragette, civil rights activist, organization executive, and community practitioner whose career spanned over half a century. Lampkin’s effective skills as an orator, fundraiser, organizer, and political activist guided the work being conducted by the National Association of Colored Women (NACW); National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); National Council of Negro Women and other leading civil rights organizations of the Progressive Era.

Early life

Born on August 9, 1883 in Washington D.C., Daisy Elizabeth Adams was educated in Reading, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of George Adams born in Virginia & Rose Proctor born in the 1860 in Charles county, Maryland. Daisy’s grandparents were Joseph Jenifer Proctor & Elizabeth Swann, free persons of color.

After completing her formal education in the public school system, she relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1909. In 1912, she married William Lampkin, a restaurateur in the Pittsburgh suburbs. It was during this time that Lampkin developed her passion for social justice and civic engagement. Those issues that initially resonated with her were connected to her life as an African-American housewife. Motivated by the suffragette movement of the early 20th century, Lampkin began hosting local suffragette meetings at her home in 1912. After relocating within the city limits of Pittsburgh, Lampkin became increasingly involved in the local leadership of the suffragist movement. She joined the New Negro Women’s Equal Franchise Federation, which would later be renamed the Lucy Stone League. Lampkin’s early career as a suffragette included assembling street-corner speeches and organizing other black housewives to actively engage in consumer groups. In 1915, her leadership and oratorical ability earned her the position of president of the Lucy Stone League, a post she maintained until 1955.

It was also during this time that Lampkin became intimately involved with the national framework of the black women’s club movement. Her leadership within the women’s club movement introduced her to the leadership circles within the federation of women’s clubs, the National Association of Colored Women (NACW), in which she served as National Board Chairwoman. During this period she developed collegial friendships with black women’s movement leaders such as Addie W. Hutton, Mary Church Terrell and Charlotte Hawkins Brown. Still her most noted partnership would come through her association and friendship with Mary McLeod Bethune, with whom she would later assist in founding the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) in 1935.

Civil Rights movement

Upon securing the right to vote, Lampkin became increasingly involved in civic engagement and civil rights advocacy effort on both the local and national level. She served as Chairwomen of the Allegheny County Negro Women’s Republican League, vice-Chairwoman of the Negro Voters League of Pennsylvania and vice-Chairwoman of the Colored Voters Division of the Republican National Committee. She established the first Red Cross chapter among black women, and organized local chapters of both the Urban League and NAACP in Pittsburgh. Most notably, she was made a stockholder and subsequently vice-president of the Pittsburgh Courier, which she used to raise funds for social justice causes and events. In her role as writer, editor, and executive, the paper became the top African-American-run circulating paper in the world during the 1950s.[citation needed] Lampkin’s influence in national politics would eventually take her to the White House to meet with then President Calvin Coolidge and other noted black leaders regarding racial equality in 1924. Reflective of both the period and Lampkin’s position, she was the only woman in attendance at the meeting.

Field Secretary of the NAACP

These efforts would eventually lead to then national secretary of the NAACP, Walter White recruiting Lampkin as the first field secretary for the organization in 1930. Here Lampkin’s efforts to organize and bolster the image of the NAACP nationally have become legendary. In 1931, Lampkin single-handedly organized the NAACP’s 1931 National Convention in Pittsburgh. Her fundraising and organizing skills so impressed NAACP leadership that in 1935, she was moved from regional to National Field Secretary of the organization. That same year, while continuing to establish local NAACP chapters and participating in fundraising efforts, Lampkin along with White, spearheaded the organization’s drive to pass a federal anti-lynching bill in the United States Congress. While many historians have noted her involvement in the Button Campaign which derived as a part of efforts to increase awareness around the anti-lynching laws amongst blacks, her political astuteness is often not fully capture in their description of her role. Lampkin’s direct involvement within the lobbying efforts on behalf of the bill far surpassed her collection of the $9,378 that she grossed through the button campaign during the Great Depression. In her description of opposition to the federal bill by white southern anti-lynching activist, Jessie Daniel Ames, because of its anti-states’ rights stance,[1] notes: “Black women thoroughly disgusted by Ames’s stance, called a meeting with her and some of her supporters, in Atlanta in 1935. Daisy Lampkin who had been involved with the confrontation with the National Woman’s Party and who was now a field secretary for the NAACP, began the discussion. The Association of Southern Women for the Prevention of Lynching’s (ASWPL) silence, she said, was strengthening the position of congressional opponents of the bill. They “[would] take new courage and they [would] use it to their advantage when they can stand on the floor and say that the…southern white women did not endorse the Costigan-Wagner Bill.”[2] While other black leaders such as Nannie Helen Burroughs and Mary Bethune proved to be more conciliatory in their understanding of southern white women’s opposition to the anti-lynching law, Lampkin continued to decry the lack of support amongst her supposed white peers. Such insistence garnered Lampkin the image of the no-nonsense community activist that she was most known for during the era.

Legacy

In addition to her lobbying, organizing and fundraising efforts, Lampkin has also been credited with recruiting a young Baltimore attorney and future Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall to become a member of the NAACP’s Legal Defense Committee in 1938. Marshall would go on to lead the organization in its successful litigation in Brown vs. the Board of Education before the U.S. Supreme Court. She was credited with having the most substantial gains in membership among any of the organization’s executive leadership. During her last year as National Field Secretary she raised over $1 million dollars for the organizations. So dedicated was she to the NAACP and community organizing that has been said she to have crossed the country conducting 40 NAACP chapter meetings in one month.Lampkin would eventually take on a renewed interest in black women’s organizing; assisting the Delta Sigma Theta sorority with internal fundraising and the centralizing of its finances and records. She has been credited with advancing the organization’s ability to have a presence in the policy-making center of the nation.

Death

While she resigned as national field secretary in 1947, Lampkin continued to serve on the organization’s executive board. She suffered a stroke while at a NAACP membership drive in Camden, New Jersey, and died several months later, on March 10, 1965. A Pennsylvania State Historical Marker is Placed at 2519 Webster Ave., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania commemorating her accomplishments.[3]

      YAWN.

I’ll be watching “Raising Hope” on Tuesdays (I’d much rather watch Martha Plimpton than that clown), and as for the other four days, well, I’ve got cable, and it gets other channels than MSNBC, the emoprog blowhard network.

Not that I watched MSNBC at night much anyway, I definitely won’t be watching now. I may turn into Last Word but that’s about it. What a waste of space. Joy Reid is hosting NOW this morning! :) ))

    • Alma98

Well the asses over at BJ are soooo happy about this, some of them want Rev. AL to be booted. Another said they like Joy Ann but she’s a little to us versus them, she needs to be more like Rachel. You believe that shit! This person doesn’t see the irony at all in their comment, smh.

      • GN

Alma, I believe it. Remember, white liberal is the new black, and civil rights pertains to the grievances of white people. Championing black people is sooooo “us versus them,” an expression of the black privilege which uppity nigras in the Democratic base wield over oppressed fauxgressives…

Nathan has been making several comments noting that this is true to form for the not of color progressive movement in the US, and dang if he isn’t on point.

        • Alma98

GN you should read some of the comments about Rev. AL and other blacks. Not only are they disrespectful they’re racist too. These people are so rapped up in having everything being too their liking they don’t see their own racism. Calling him names like mush mouth & saying he has limited knowledge on things that are important to them. Fuck these snobby people, you’re only allowed on their TV if you agree with them or bash PBO 24/7. Excuse my language, but these people worked my last nerve.

          • GN

Just doesn’t surprise me. I know they’re racist, and that they presume themselves superior to the of color base of the party is beyond dispute to me. We’re supposed to just supply the votes and then shut the f- up while our betters pursue their Bradley Manning + drones pet cause bullshit. I’m past done with them.

          • Alma98

I was just thinking the same thing, we’re supposed to shut up and let them do the talking. I’ve been past them too. I just keep my eye on them cause they’re always effing things up for the rest of us.

      • jziglar

True ! This Dan guy wants to pretty much boot all of the non white hosts. I love how they define a good host as someone who is not an obot and goes after the president.

        • Alma98

I was like wtf! You all basically want to get rid of all the black folks. They’re no different from the teapublicans. They only associate with black people who agrees with them and do what they’re told.

Stopping imaginary threats in their tracks

    By Steve Benen
    Thu Mar 14, 2013 8:00 AM EDT.

With all the real-world challenges policymakers can and should be addressing, it’s always disappointing when they invest their energies on threats that don’t actually exist.

Some Republican lawmakers support denying funds to ACORN, which permanently closed its doors years ago. Others want to stop the scourge of imposing “Sharia law” on Americans, a threat that exists only in right-wing imaginations. Some even want to stop the “NAFTA Super Highway” that remains purely mythical.

And to follow up on an item from yesterday, Congress is taking a firm stand in support of welfare work requirements that no one is trying to undermine.

Obama’s not the one with a popularity problem
    By Steve Benen
    Wed Mar 13, 2013 4:41 PM EDT.

For the Washington Post and ABC News, the key takeaway from their new national poll is apparently supposed to be President Obama’s declining fortunes. The Post’s lede reads, “The afterglow of President Obama’s reelection and inauguration appears to have vanished.”

And in a literal sense, that’s true. On Election Day 2012, when Obama won by 5 million votes and earned 332 electoral votes, the president had a 50/46 approval/disapproval rating, and in today’s poll, he once again has a 50/46 approval/disapproval rating. He got a bump earlier in the year, which has since gone away.

    ……………………………………………………………….

Did the president get a post-election bounce that has since faded? Sure. But looking at this chart, I don’t think it’s Obama who has a popularity problem.

This isn’t a matter of opinion; it’s a matter of looking at the numbers on the page. The president’s standing was clearly stronger immediately after his inauguration, and the honeymoon didn’t last. Weeks of sustained media coverage about how it’s Obama’s fault that Republicans won’t compromise or even negotiate may have taken a toll on his support.

But for goodness sakes, 72% of the country — 72% — disapprove of congressional Republicans. Among self-identified moderates, it’s 81% — and the poll was taken before the House Republican budget, which hopes to scrap Medicare and give millionaires another tax break, was released. What’s more, GOP lawmakers receive the bulk of the blame for the sequestration fiasco.

    – - – -Cable News Obsessively Covers Cuts To White House Tours, Virtually Ignores Cuts To Programs For The Poor – -

    — – – -Thanks to Congressional gridlock, automatic budget cuts took effect 14 days ago, threatening 700,000 jobs and gutting funds for vital programs in housing assistance, early childhood education, disaster relief, and national security. Secret Service staffing was also impacted, prompting the cancellation of White House tours last week. Republicans immediately attacked the decision as a political move designed to turn the public against the sequester and 14 Republican senators signed a letter demanding information.

    – - – - -The media has also latched on to preserve the White House tours, while largely ignoring other much more devastating sequester cuts. As Ari Melber of The Nation pointed out on Wednesday, there are 12,000 news stories concerning White House tours and less than 1,000 about the sequester’s impact on housing assistance programs, which disproportionately affect low-income Americans.

ThinkProgress examined this trend on three major cable news networks — Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC — since March 6. White House tours were mentioned 33 times as often (Fox News had 163 segments, CNN had 59, and MSNBC had 42) as mentions of other sequester impacts hitting the poor.

    – — -The media’s silence on the most brutal sequester cuts is well in line with the fourth estate’s normal approach to poverty. During the 2012 presidential campaign, just .2 percent of campaign coverage by major TV, radio, and print outlets addressed poverty in any substantive way. More recently, the media mostly ignored the effects of spending cuts in the so-called “fiscal cliff” at the end of 2012, preferring to discuss tax hikes instead.

There is nothing wrong with the law. Don’t take away the means for citizens to defend themselves.

“Although the number of justifiable homicides in Florida has more than doubled since “stand your ground” was passed in 2005, the rate of violent crime in the state deceased by 23% from 2005 to 2010, according to FBI statistics. This is not to say that the “stand your ground” law in itself caused the decrease, but it certainly was a factor.”

      http://usatoday30.usatoday.com/news/opinion/story/2012-03-26/stand-your-ground-police/53795024/1

Don’t let some overzealous law enforcement wannabe cloud the appropriateness of the law. The Trayvon Martin incident had nothing to do with ‘Stand your Ground.” And these church groups are trying to link it with that. Presently, Zimmerman’s lawyer waived the “Stand your Ground” hearing in his case because he knows his client will lose if they try to use that defense.

—–President Talks to Crazy Brick Wall - – - -

——- President Obama went down to Capitol Hill yesterday to meet with House Republicans and was immediately barraged by their non-factual universe. To wit:

Rep. James Lankford (R-Okla.) — the Republican Policy Committee chairman — brought up a familiar hobby-horse for House Republicans: that Obama is always campaigning.

He asked about Organizing for Action’s (OFA) meeting. He complained that Obama called Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) before Boehner on election night. Obama said that wasn’t true and that he had called Boehner, but Boehner had gone to sleep, according to a source familiar with the meeting. The speaker said the president was right, the source said.

I thought it was common knowledge that John Boehner passed out drunk in his easy chair right around the time that Karl Rove lost his shit on Fox News. At the least, I thought people knew that election night was just one more example of John Boehner not taking the president’s phone calls. —

    – - –Today, the president will meet with Senate Republicans (I recommend a headlock noogie for freshman Ted Cruz) and the House Democrats. I expect the meeting with the House Democrats to be the more unpleasant of the two meetings. Obama has enough support among Senate Republicans to pass some of his gun legislation, get an immigration bill with a path to citizenship, and to cut a deal on the budget (whether grand or not). Of course, any deal is going to annoy the hell out of progressive Democrats. – — -

    – - -14 GOP Congressmen Who Think Government Shouldn’t Borrow Have Big Debts Of Their Own – –

    — – - – -As Congressional Republicans again rally around Rep. Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) budget and its goal of eliminating the deficit in ten years, many are using an old talking point. They claim that the federal government should model itself on the federal government stop spending more money than it takes in. But a ThinkProgress examination of recent personal financial disclosure filings reveals that many of the same lawmakers who are urging the nation to balance its books are themselves in debt and have taken out personal and/or business loans.

Government is nothing like a business and cannot be run as one — its aim is to protect its citizens, not to turn a profit. Businesses and individuals often borrow in the short term to make investments for the long term — mortgages, lines of credits, and other sorts of loans are facts of life for millions of Americans and businesses of all sizes. Start-up businesses rarely break even for the first several years and few people can afford to buy their first home outright or pay for their kids to go to college out of pocket.

    – –THIS: – - – ->Still, many politicians who advocate for cuts to vital programs and a dangerous Balanced Budget Amendment to the U.S. Constitution use the argument that government needs to live with in its means because everyone else does — but have debt of their own. These hypocrites include: — -

My colleagues and I believe it is time for America to change course and get back on a path of prosperity. This begins with a balanced budget plan.” Reported five mortgages totaling over $4 million. – —ETC!!! — – -SNIP – - – -

    – - -Though the average U.S. Representative has a net worth of more than $6 million, the House Republican Leader, Republic Whip, and Republican Conference Chair all reported some sort of personal liabilities. So even though he is still the boombastic big mouth “screw over the lil people” he always has been, that one time praising PBO is enough for him to get blackballed completely huh? He gotta repent before they’ll welcome him back LOL

CPAC chair: Christie didn’t ‘deserve’ an invite this year

American Conservative Union chairman Al Cardenas spoke briefly with reporters ahead of the beginning of the CPAC conference — explaining why he didn’t invite New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and insisting that the GOP is “not a home for everybody.”

As the conference opens, the GOP’s identity crisis — expand the tent, or try to convince more people to crowd under what’s already built — is on sharp display.
“I’m a firm believer that if the Republican Party’s going to have success, it’s going to do so by being a conservative party and not a home for ah, for everybody,” Cardenas said. “And that’s how you grow. I mean, look, you grow your tent by convincing others, and persuading others, that yours is the way, and you build your tent by reaching out to the new demographics of America not with a watered down version of who we ought to be but with a true, real, solid version of who we are.”

Cardenas also repeated explanations for why the conference hadn’t invited New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie to speak at the event.
“This year, for better or for worse, we felt like, ah, like he didn’t deserve to be on the all-star selection, ah, and, for decisions that he made. And so hopefully next year he’s back on the right track and being a conservative,” Cardenas said. “He’s a popular figure, but everyone needs to live by the parameters of the movement.”

CPAC did Christie a favor by not inviting him. He is a Republican govenor in a blue state with an extremely high approval rating. Why does Chris Christie need CPAC? CPAC is forum for Republicans who want to expand their national profile. Everyone knows Christie already.

This is the speaker list. Of all the Republicans on that list Christie has a higher name brand than all of them. I couldn’t believe Artur Davis’ name was on it. SMH…..how are you one way your whole life and then be on the opposite end of the spectrum?

South Carolina GOP: ‘It’s Good Politics to Oppose the Policies of the Black Guy’

By Imani Gandy (ABL) March 13th, 2013

    Post-racial America is my favorite.

The South Carolina legislature rejected extra funding from Obamacare for Medicaid expansion this week, despite pleading from South Carolina Democrats, who urged the South Carolina GOP to stop acting like douchebags and extend Medicaid to thousands of poor South Carolinians.

Democrats even pulled the old “What would Jesus do?” trick, appealing to Republicans’ sense of morality (scoff!), and quoting scripture and everything:

    …………………………………………

Unsurprisingly, South Carolina Republicans were unmoved. One Republican in particular finally said in front of God and everyone what everygoddamnbody knows most of these wingnut assclowns have been thinking all along: Republicans oppose President Obama’s policies because he’s black, even when they otherwise agree with the policy.

Meet Rep. Kris Crawford (R-Seriously Dude?): He supports the Medicaid expansion but voted against it anyway, because Obama’s black. Literally. He actually said it out loud back in January, bless his heart

Rep. Kris Crawford, a Republican from Florence and also an emergency room doctor, supports the expansion but expects the Republican caucus to vote as a block against the Medicaid expansion.
“The politics are going to overwhelm the policy. It is good politics to oppose the black guy in the White House right now, especially for the Republican Party,” Crawford said.

Got a lil heated up in there! LOL

    excerpt:
Feinstein became furious at one point with Cruz, who she saw as lecturing to her about the meaning of the Constitution and why the framers of that document used certain language.

“I’m not a sixth grader,” she told the freshman Tea Party favorite. “I’m not a lawyer, but after 20 years I’ve been up close and personal to the Constitution. I have great respect for it … it’s fine you want to lecture me on the Constitution. I appreciate it. Just know I’ve been here for a long time. I’ve passed on a number of bills. I’ve studied the Constitution myself. I am reasonably well educated, and I thank you for the lecture.”

Cruz responded by asking Feinstein if she also thought she had the power to interpret the First Amendment by deciding what books people could read.
Feinstein said she was happy that child pornography was illegal, and Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) stepped in, bringing up controversies in Cruz’s home state over the content of its textbooks.

    • Guns3000

On gun issues I’m more aligned with Cruz but that was even below him and unbecoming of Senator of his meager seniority and no less a Senator itself. I don’t like Senator Feinstein’s politics on gun control but she deserves a lot more respect than that. Cruz was as usual just grandstanding because it plays to the lowest common denominator in his constituency.

      • Aquagranny911

I will probably regret this but I have waded in on the gun lovers way more rabid than you over these past weeks.

Please tell me what is so wrong about wanting some control over these modern weapons of ‘mass destruction’ & over just who can buy guns, when, where & how?

How many bullets do you need to kill a dear, a javalina or other game to feed your family? Most real hunters will tell you just one!

How many bullets do you need to kill another human being? Just one!

I grew up rural & poor. Hunting put food on the table when we might have gone hungry. A gun did protect us & our live stock from predators both four legged & two. So, I am not one of those total anti-gun people. I just want to see some sanity in all this.

Imo, there is absolutely no need for any civilian to have military grade weapons & high capacity magazines. Nor, should any nut case be able to buy weapons & ammo at swap meets & gun shows no questions asked.

        My two figging pesos…..

        • Guns3000

          “I will probably regret this”

LOL…..why would you regret a thing? I’m more than happy to have a discussion about my positions.

“Please tell me what is so wrong about wanting some control over these modern weapons of ‘mass destruction’ & over just who can buy guns, when, where & how?”

I don’t have a problem with control. If you ask me about something specific I’ll tell you my thoughts on it. I’m for universal background checks.

“modern weapons of mass destruction” there is a bit of hyperbole in that statement don’t you think.

“Nor, should any nut case be able to buy weapons & ammo at swap meets & gun shows no questions asked.”

We agree there. I’ve been to multitude of gun shows and these dealers sell to anyone who has money. It’s pretty grotesque I’ve seen it with my own eyes.

“Imo, there is absolutely no need for any civilian to have military grade weapons & high capacity magazines.”

Why not? Gangs, drug cartels, racist militias have them. Why is the government or anyone else so concerned about my weapons. They can’t even control the bad guys. When the government can get handle on the criminals then we can have a conversation about my guns. Until then US government can stay out of my business concerning my weapons. My overall point is every time I have a discussion about guns. The first question is(not saying you did this) …….why should you have an AR-15 or a 30 round magazine? My answer is why are you wasting time on the the tax paying and law abiding person. Your question should be why do the criminals have AR-15s? Because that has nothing to do with me.

This “assault weapons” ban is a scam anyway. First off, assault weapons are illegal in the US already unless you have a special license. The politicians within the Democratic party are doing this for symbolic purposes. Do you know the percentage of gun crimes committed with a “semi automatic rifle?” Less than 2%. If there is a problem I would think they would concentrate on the biggest slice not the miniscule part.

          http://washingtonexaminer.com/crs-under-2-percent-of-gun-crimes-involve-assault-weapons/article/2516512

Anyway, I could go on but I think you get my point.

          • Aquagranny911

I get a few of your points…maybe. I live in a state where guns & ammo are sold no questions ever asked.

AZ was ground zero for the BS over “Fast & Furious” because you could probably buy nukes here if you knew who to ask.

Why does any sane person ever need more than a shotgun, a rifle and/or maybe a hand gun? Unless, that person wants to kill lots of people in quick time?

I’m done with this! Those babies in Newtown were literally shreded to doll rags. They were not just shot, they were ripped to pieces!

There is no need for weapons like this loose in our society. NO MAS!

Reading the Obama interview in Vogue and it sounds like the President’s gotten the partying out of his system; he’s not looking for new friends or socializing in DC, lol. Which is probably why he didn’t have the senators to the Residence and took them to a nice hotel for dinner; he’s trying to do business. He needs some partners on the other side; which is what 2014 is all about and why the Republicans are mad. He’s exposing them. And the MSM can keep trying; but they can’t cover for them even if they won’t report the truth their own polls tell them (I’m looking at you WashPo).

“ ‘The Obamas are out in the club again?’ ” says the president, laughing. “What is true,” he says, more seriously, “is that we probably—even before we came to Washington—had already settled in a little bit to parenthood. And. . . .” Here he pauses in the way that only President Obama can. “Let’s put it this way: I did an awful lot of socializing in my teens and 20s.

“Let’s put it this way: I did an awful lot of socializing in my teens and 20s. That’s my favorite part of this quote. I take it to mean he came to D.C. to work for the American people. Ed Schultz Fills an Important Niche

    by BooMan
Thu Mar 14th, 2013 at 11:06:49 AM EST

I have this very vague recollection of a point in time when I read a comment on some blog, probably Daily Kos, where a progressive was praising Ed Schultz, and I had a moment of cognitive dissonance because I thought Ed Schultz was a right-wing shock jock. It turns out, I was right. He was a right-wing shock jock before he had an epiphany

    ……………………………………………………………

Cynics can doubt Schultz’s sincerity and criticize him for his chameleon-like ambition, but I think he’s spent enough time now with working men and women that his commitment to their causes should be beyond question. He may have his faults, but he fills a critical niche among white progressives. I don’t like to paint people into tight categories, but the progressive movement is mainly made up of three groups. The first and most powerful group is made of lawmakers who represent urban areas with large minority populations. Most of these lawmakers are black, Latino, or Asian, and they dominate the Progressive Caucus in the House of Representatives. The second group is made up of a combination of the academic world and the liberal-minded professional classes. The scientific community has a foot in each of these camps. It’s this second group that dominates the progressive blogosphere. It’s also where you find most of the MSNBC lineup. Chris Hayes went to Brown University; Lawrence O’Donnell went to Harvard; Rachel Maddow was a Rhodes Scholar; Ezra Klein went to UCLA; Melissa Harry-Perry has a doctorate from Duke University and has taught at Princeton.

So, where does Big Ed fit in? He represents the third group: labor. He represents the interests of all working men and women, regardless of race. In fact, he seems to me to have a better understanding of how the labor and urban/minority groups are co-dependent and are empowered when they stand together than any other progressive I’ve seen on television.

    http://www.boomantribune.com/story/2013/3/14/11649/9098

    • Rhoda

He does. But he’s not great television. Reading the BJ post on this; I’m astonished at how insulated people are that they don’t realize what a major hit Rev. Al’s show is and how he fills a space for minority voices.

IF MSNBC were smart; they’d get a Latino in Ed’s slot, move Rev. Al to 7 and give Joy Ann Reid the 6pm slot.

Let’s get more voices and more diversity on this network; that is the Obama coalition.

      • Town

Because most white people are like “Al Sharpton = Eww”. They see him as a race huckster so they ignore him.

Why DON’T they have a Latino host?

Oh, oh…I know…Antonio Banderas! Never mind, that’s just me. A lot of Latinos watch Rev Al & Martin Bashir.

      • rikyrah

Rev. Al is informative, on point and relatable.

If all he’s remembered for on tv is his fight over voter suppression and what he did for Trayvon Martin’s parents, that’s more than 98% of the rest of the so-called Black journalists have done – combined.

    • Tafr

Booman is a wondeful, smart blogger, I love his work. However, I have to disagree with him about Ed. I agree when he says we need someone like Ed to talk to the working folks but it cannot be Ed. I hate to keep beating a dead horse but Ed told folks not to vote in 2010. Not only did Ed tell these people not to vote Ed claims that he would not vote as well. Now what pisses me off is that no matter how much Ed may sound like an every day, working class, Joe the truth of the matter is he is not. Ed gets paid well to talk all day on the radio and MSNBC. Point blank I doubt Ed is living paycheck to paycheck like some of his listeners. When the isht hit the fan in WI and OH simple Ed was not the the one in danger of losing every damn thing he worked for no that was the working Joe. For Ed to come off as if he is on the same level as these people he speaks to by telling them not to vote is irresponsible. Ed is not the champion for blue collar workers.

    • Alma98

I’m sorry but Ed is a blowhard, he only started to talk about unions when the people here in WI decided to stand up. He latched onto their coattails and started getting good ratings. When people stopped talking about unions his show went down the tubes. All he does is bash PBO and people are sick of it day in and day out.

    • GN

I hear his argument, but I kinda feel like meh versus meh. Schultz is bombastic; Hayes is asshattical. Kind of no one to root for in this scenario. Neither content much appeals to me. Maddow and Hayes are not nearly as insightful and intelligent as they seem to credit themselves.

The Morning Plum: Where’s the leadership, John Boehner?

Posted by Greg Sargent on March 14, 2013 at 9:22 am

Every GOP Senator and member of Congress needs to be asked a simple question: Is there any ratio of entitlement cuts of your own choosing to new revenues that you’d find acceptable?

Let’s just cut through the BS about whether Obama’s “outreach” is genuine and whether Obama has exercised sufficient “leadership.” Either Republicans are willing to reach some kind of compromise, or they aren’t. Until there’s clarity on this point, everything else is just noise. The above question would help clarify it.

Case in point: John Boehner’s remarkable Op ed in the Washington Post today.

Yesterday Obama met with House Republicans. While there was a lot of grousing, a few were willing to admit Obama had offered them real entitlement cuts. According to Sahil Kapur’s report, one House Republican said: “He did express a willingness to give on entitlements.” Another said: “He focused a lot on entitlements.”

    Elizabeth Warren has some questions

    By Steve Benen
    Thu Mar 14, 2013 12:36 PM EDT

Following up on a story we’ve been following, President Obama nominated Richard Cordray to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau about a year ago, and no one could find any objections to his qualifications. But Republicans don’t believe the agency, so they blocked Cordray’s nomination in order to stop the law from being implemented. Indeed, GOP senators said they would indefinitely refuse to allow the agency to function — or do any work at all — unless Democrats agreed to weaken the CFPB’s powers and lessen consumer protections.

Just so we’re clear, this had never happened in American history. There was no precedent for the Senate blocking a qualified nominee solely because a minority of the chamber did not like the existence of the agency the nominee was selected to lead.

Obama gave Cordray a recess appointment, and the CFPB has been acting on behalf of consumers ever since, but given the rules of how recess appointments work, the president has re-nominated Cordray for the post he already holds. The Senate Banking Committee met yesterday to consider the nomination once again, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), who personally helped create the CFPB, asked some very worthwhile questions — not of Cordray, but of her GOP colleagues.

I have to say that many of the posters on Balloon juice have showed their ass talking about Rev. Al needing to be replaced, and this dan commenter pretty much saying that non white hosts like Martin Bashir, Rev. Al, and MHP need to go. And some other person saying that defending Obama is not needed so Joy Reid should not get a spot.

I’m tired of the racism and the constant Obama bashing. The media shits on Obama 93 % of the time but for the emo left that anything less than 100 % makes you an Obot.

    • Aquagranny911

I hardly ever visit that site. The diaries are not all that good & too many of those who post there remind me of Kos. It doesn’t surprise me at all that some are showing their racist asses. Was there any push back at all or did the others just nod like bobble heads?

      • Alma98

        Minimal.

      • jziglar

Like Alma said there was some push back but the funny thing is that some of them don’t see that the stuff they are saying comes off racist and shows their entitlement.

    • Town

Well the person who wants to “shit can” Rev Al is named Betty Cracker, so go figure.

      • jziglar

        LOL ! True.

    • Ebogan63

Why I never go over there.

    • GOVCHRIS1988

Its just a cacophony of white liberal privilege there. I saw one poster say that Rev. Al doesn’t cover the black community well, so lets replace him with Academic at white schools Melissa Harris Perry!? So, dude who fought in the trenches even when he wasn’t popular isn’t good enough, so replace him with an Ivory Tower person who hasn’t done that. WOW.

I like his show personally. I enjoy the straight talk. Obviously, he was unpolished at first and but he has gotten a lot better.

Dems to Ryan: We’ll see your budget plan and raise you another
    By Steve Benen
    Thu Mar 14, 2013 10:12 AM EDT.

It’s clearly not fair that House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) unveiled his far-right budget proposal this week to great fanfare, but Senate Democrats unveil a rival plan and it gets almost no attention at all. After all, GOP officials have been screaming bloody murder for months, demanding that Dems present a budget, and then when they do, it goes almost entirely overlooked.

Sure, one could make the argument that Senate Democrats got unlucky, unveiling their plan on the same day a new pope was chosen, but it’s probably safe to say the rival budget wouldn’t have been front-page news whether the Vatican smoke was black or white.

And why is that? It’s probably less a matter of party and ideology, and more a matter of policy scope. The Ryan budget, as Matt Yglesias noted, is “almost frighteningly ambitious,” aiming for “sweeping social transformation.” The House Republican plan wants nothing less than to undo much of American society, taking a sledgehammer to pillars of modern public life such as Medicare. It is the exact opposite of classical conservatism — what Ryan has in mind is literally radical and a sharp departure from contemporary American norms.

The Senate Democratic budget, meanwhile, is … modest. It has no intention of trying to transform modern American life, and seeks fiscal responsibility through gradual tweaks and reforms. It’s a middle-of-the-road budget, setting a target of $1.85 trillion in debt reduction, divided perfectly between new revenue and new spending cuts. It eyes changes to social-insurance programs like Medicare, but goes out of its way to avoid touching benefits.

Liberals to Dem leaders: Don’t even think about touching Social Security benefits
Posted by Greg Sargent on March 14, 2013 at 1:40 pm

Multiple reports out today suggest that Dem leaders in the House and Senate are edging towards supporting Chained CPI for Social Security as part of the “grand bargain” Obama wants to replace the sequester with — and that’s already sparking sharp pushback from Congressional liberals.

“Why are we doing this?” Dem Rep. Keith Ellison, a co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, said to me in an interview today. Asked which is worse, continued sequestration or a grand bargain that cuts entitlement benefits, Ellison said: “It’s like saying, `Which of your kids do you want to sacrifice to the monster?’ Neither one.”

Ellison is backed up by over 100 other House Dems who have pledged to fight any cuts to retirement benefits, including Chained CPI, a way of indexing Social Security benefits to inflation that amounts to a real benefits cut.

At a presser today, Nancy Pelosi signaled openness to Chained CPI, saying: “If we can demonstrate that it doesn’t hurt the poor and the very elderly, then let’s take a look at it. Because compared to what? Compared to Republicans saying Medicare should wither on the vine?” Meanwhile, the Post quoted administration officials claiming both Pelosi and Harry Reid are on board with the grand bargain and are ready to rally rank and file Dems to support politically difficult cuts to retirement programs in exchange for real tax increases.

    • Ebogan63

Chained CPI is not a ‘cut’ and given the reliability of Sargent’s ‘sources’ I’ll wait for something from either Pelosi or Durbin

Translation: Ryan’s budget is a shiny object.

This was supposed to go downstream…note taken disquis is trippin’

    Afternoon thread is up!

I have to say this portion of the Vogue interview with FLOTUS & POTUS had me tickled. FLOTUS basically said they can kiss our asses. lol

The president and First Lady both seem to be in ebullient moods, and deservedly so. His surprisingly decisive reelection is now history; the tonally precise inauguration is ten days behind them. The First Lady, it must be said, is funny, and it soon becomes clear that she can’t resist an opportunity to tease her husband. The first real question I ask them is about the persistent notion among the Washington press corps that they—unlike, say, the Reagans or the Clintons—are somehow antisocial, that they don’t privately entertain enough at the White House, that they don’t break bread and smoke cigars and play poker with their enemies. When I joke that they might want to “put that idea to rest” once and for all, the president starts to answer, but his wife, whose back has gone up ever so slightly, cuts him off. “I don’t think it’s our job to put an idea to rest. Our job is, first and foremost, to make sure our family is whole. You know, we have small kids; they’re growing every day. But I think we were both pretty straightforward when we said, ‘Our number-one priority is making sure that our family is whole.’ ”

    • Miranda

I get the feeling POTUS was bout to say something..ummmm….”controversial”, yeah! controversial! (bout to say F them!) and FLOTUS was like “oh let me keep my boo from getting in any trouble!” LMAO

      • Alma98

        LOL!

      • Aquagranny911

LMAO! It’s really hard for me to imagine our PBO saying that right out loud. He has more class than I do, imo but he might have said it in a polite & rambling way. Michelle just cut to the chase with a very polite FU of her own.

I love both of them so very much. They are both the real deal!
