Thursday Open Thread: Black Feminists/Womanists

CherylClarke

Cheryl L. Clarke (born Washington DC, 1947) is a writer, educator and lesbian Black feminist activist.

Raised in Washington DC, she reflected in some of her earliest work the troubled times of the 1960’s and the rebellions that ripped through the District of Columbia following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Clarke is the author of four collections of poetry: Narratives: Poems in the Tradition of Black Women (originally self-published in 1981 and distributed by Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press in 1982); and for Firebrand Books Living as a Lesbian (1986), Humid Pitch (1989) and Experimental Love (1993).

She also published After Mecca – Women Poets and the Black Arts Movement (Rutgers University Press, 2005), the first study of its kind that made more visible the contributions of black women to a field that traditionally recognized black men; Days of Good Looks: Prose and Poetry, 1980-2005 (Carroll & Graf Publishing, 2006), a collection that represented 25 years of published writing.

Cheryl Clarke has served on the editorial collective of Conditions, an early lesbian publication and has been published in numerous anthologies and journals including: Home GirlsThe Callaloo Journal and Black Scholar.

A graduate of Howard University in 1969, Clarke later received her Masters and Ph.D in English from Rutgers University in 1974 and 2000, respectively. This presaged the long relationship with the university where she has taught and worked since 1970. She is currently on the graduate faculty of the Rutgers University Department of Women and Gender Studies, the founding Director of Diverse Community Affairs and Lesbian/Gay Concerns, which became the Office for Social Justice Education and LGBT Communities in 2004. She served as the Dean of Students of the Livingston Campus at Rutgers University from 2009-2013. Clarke retired from Rutgers in 2013, after 41 years.

She has served on a number of boards and community organizations, including New York Women Against Rape (1985), New Jersey Women and AIDS Network, Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies at the CUNY Graduate Center, and the Astraea Lesbian Action Foundation for Social Justice. Currently, Clarke is a member of the Board of Directors of the Newark Pride Alliance, which is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to LGBTQ advocacy and programming in the city of Newark, New Jersey. She lives and writes in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Report: Will Smith’s Business Partner Warned Him About Scientology Interfering with Career

In 2008, Olivier says, Smith’s business partner James Lassiter warned him about the movie “Hancock”: “Don’t let Scientology get in the way of this movie. Don’t let the school and Scientology get in the way of the bottom line.’ I’m paraphrasing, but that’s the point of what he said,” Olivier says.

Greg Sargent: Inequality is ‘the defining issue of our time’

The speech on inequality that President Obama delivered just now will mostly pass unnoticed by the political world, with Republicans dismissing it as “class warfare” and an effort to distract from Obamacare, and pundits describing it more delicately as a ”pivot” away from the law.

‘Scandal’ sneak peek: the team meets Olivia’s mom…and secrets come out — EXCLUSIVE
By Sandra Gonzalez on Dec 3, 2013 at 2:28PM @EWSandraG

The exclusive sneak peek below gives you an idea of what’s in store. For one, Team OPA will meet Olivia’s mom in this hour, and as you’ll see, things don’t go smoothly. But also, Mama Pope is silent no more, and secrets are coming out.

    http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/12/03/scandal-sneak-peek-team-meets-olivias-mom/

    • rikyrah

was listening to a Scandal Review on youtube, and the folks made a great observation..

They believe Mama Pope is this decade’s Irina Derevko ..

For the non-Alias fans, Irina Derevko was Sydney Bristow’s KGB Mama from Russia…and one bad woman…

I, too, believe that Mama Pope is on Daddy Goon level if not more. NO WAY he keeps her locked up in Supermax for no reason.

Olivia really was raised by the Black equivalent of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. …that’s my theory and I’m sticking to it.

Olivia looks like any minute now she is going to start doing the Huck curl up and rock back and forth.

    http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-12-05/economy-in-u-s-expands-at-3-6-rate-on-bigger-inventory-build.html

This is why Republicans were desperate to win last year; everyone knew the rebound was coming and whomever was in office would get the credit. And Barack Hussein Obama is the one who cleaned up after Bush and will reap the rewards by the grace of God; despite the billion spent against him!

I swear, that number put a smile on my face. The recovery is starting to take hold; as rikyrah said: imagine if we weren’t saddled with these traitors in the majority of the House of Representatives?

    • rikyrah

      that’s right Rhoda..
what would this country look like if the GOP hadn’t of decided to commit ECONOMIC TREASON AGAINS THIS COUNTRY beginning January 20, 2009?

      • Rhoda

Absolutely, how much higher would it be if we hadn’t also had a goverment shutdown? 4%?

I also love how this isn’t headline news on Politico; but if they had revised downward you can be damn sure they’d break out that red breaking news bar!

Georgia’s Insurance Commissioner Compares the Chronically Ill to Bad Drivers

Georgia insurance commissioner Ralph Hudgens — the man in the state responsible for regulating the insurance industry — doesn’t appear to have a robust sense of the role of “insurance.” Requiring insurers to cover pre-existing medical conditions, he told a group last month, is like getting into a car accident and then asking for auto coverage.

The video, obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (and via ThinkProgress), shows Hudgens speaking at a CSRA Republican Women’s Club dinner. Insurers warn that their costs will rise if they have to cover pre-existing conditions, he says, and then explains why such coverage doesn’t make sense in his view.

    – ———-U.S. jobless claims drop by 23,000 to 298,000
    – – – –The number of new applications for unemployment benefits fell by 23,000 last week to 298,000, the Labor Department said Thursday, but the decline may have been skewed by difficulties in making seasonal adjustments during the holidays. The holiday season kicked off last week with Thanksgiving, a commemorative day that often occurs at different times toward the end of November. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected claims to rise to 325,000 in the seven days ended Nov. 30 from a revised 321,000 in the prior week. Adjusted claims are now at the lowest level since early September and they are below 300,000 for only the second time since the recession ended in 2009. The average of new claims over the past month, a more reliable gauge than the volatile weekly number, fell by 10,750 to 322,250. That’s the lowest level since
late September. Also, the government said continuing claims decreased by 21,000 to a seasonally adjusted 2.74 million in the week ended Nov. 23

Gross domestic product grew at a 3.6 per cent annual rate instead of the 2.8 per cent pace reported earlier,

The alleged incident occurred nearly a year ago, but it wasn’t until last month that Tallahassee police turned over information about the case to prosecutors.

State Attorney Willie Meggs said Wednesday that his office has “exhausted all investigative tools” since the case was handed over in

PBOMB♥ – –He[Charles Pierce] has CAPTURED the SPIRIT of MR. PRESIDENT: – :>)–

    – –A Whole New Ballgame
    – — – –The president gave an important speech yesterday.
The topic was income inequality and the dangers that our current rate
of income inequality poses to the ongoing creative act of self-government. Income inequality is a hot topic at the moment. The
pope is speaking out strongly — and caustically — about the subject.
People are starting to notice that income inequality is not merely the
fact that some people are “left behind” but, rather, that it has become
something structural in our society and our government. The president gave an important speech yesterday.
(Tell me again, by the way, that Occupy had no effect on our national politics. The president isn’t pitching a tent in Zuccotti Park here but, without the agitation therein, he has a harder pull at re-election and he doesn’t give this speech.) This is some of what the president said.
    – – – -SNIP – – – –
    – — -This is where the speech begins to get important, and not just because the president is quoting the barbed criticisms levelled by the pope. It is here where the president begins to insist that there be a new paradigm in how we talk about income inequality and what we do about it.It is here where he begins to insist that income inequality is not the result of the impersonal consequences of economic transition but, rather, the result of choices made and not made, the result of actions taken and not taken, and all of them deliberate and calculated to benefit a specific class of people. The crash of 2008 was not inevitable. It had human causes that were very much avoidable. It is here where he begins to talk about the dangers of oligarchy, and about how oligarchy can turn the promise of self-government into a sucker’s game.

Details of the alleged offer were included in a 450-page police document released on Wednesday by an Ontario Superior Court judge after a petition by media lawyers.

Ford admitted early last month he had smoked crack cocaine, saying it was probably “in one of my drunken stupors,” but he said he is not an addict and does not need help. White House says 240,000 jobs lost in 2014 without jobless benefits extension

    WASHINGTON Thu Dec 5, 2013 9:42am EST

(Reuters) – The White House piled pressure on Republicans on Thursday to extend U.S. jobless benefits with a report that estimated a failure to take action could lead to a loss of 240,000 jobs in 2014.

About 1.3 million Americans stand to lose jobless benefits on January 1 unless Congress agrees on an extension, and President Barack Obama and his fellow Democrats are trying to overcome opposition from Republican lawmakers to extend the benefits as part of a budget deal.

A joint report from the White House Council of Economic Advisers and the Labor Department estimated that without an extension of the benefits, GDP could be .2 percent to .4 percent lower.

Republican Staffers And Candidates Are Taking Classes To Learn How Not To Offend Women- –

    – – – -The National Republican Congressional Committee is offering tutorials to staffers of men up for election next year on how not to offend women. Politico reportsthe sessions are meant specifically to assist Republican men in how to speak on the campaign trail when they are up against Democratic women.

The classes are surely a response to a gender voting gap that favors Democrats, one that has been bolstered in recent years as male candidates use certain wording and language that offends female constituents.

During the last election cycle, several male Republican candidates
lost popular support after making flippant remarks about women. Senate candidate Todd Akin (R-MO), for example, stirred up controversy by suggesting that victims of “legitimate rape”can’t get pregnant because “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.” That comment was followed up just weeks later by another Senate candidate, Richard Mourdock, saying that pregnancies resulting from rape are a “gift from god.”

I’m noticing a trend in the reporting on PBO, among the most positive articles and commentaries. Most are anchored by a lie:

    1. Regarding PBO’s foreign policy success – had to overcome the Susan Rice failed nomination (didn’t nominate her) and overcome “caving” on the red line in Syria (always was the use of chemical weapons never indicated he wanted to address the civil war)
    2. Regarding the “botched” rollout of the website is now gospel, never mind any logical comparison to other tech roll-out or even a fair assessment of the roll-out of social security (a hot mess), this has become a “fact”

3.Regarding PBO’s approval numbers, his “failure” in the first debate, despite the fact that his numbers didn’t change nor as Axelrod stated “the fundamentals of the race” (a he has the numbers to back him up)

The unchecked lies that are allowed to stand about this President shame the entire 4th estate. Collectively they will go down in history as a new chapter in yellow journalism.

De Blasio Names Bratton as New York Police Commissioner

By WILLIAM K. RASHBAUM, J. DAVID GOODMAN and
    JOSEPH GOLDSTEIN
    Published: December 5, 2013 1 Comment

Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio on Thursday morning named William J. Bratton to lead the New York Police Department.

The move will return Mr. Bratton to the helm of the nation’s largest
force at a time of historically low crime rates and a deepening rift
    between officers and the public.

The appointment has been highly anticipated and will most likely be
among the most consequential for Mr. de Blasio, who turned discontent
with the Police Department’s stop-and-frisk practices into a key part of
    his winning election run.

“Bill Bratton is a proven crime-fighter,” Mr. de Blasio said in a news
release. “He knows what it takes to keep a city safe, and make
communities full partners in the mission.”

    • crazycanuck

OK, according to what you all said, I really do not understand this at all. He is on twitter, I’m sure he be hearing from people about this.

    • Alma98

Wow! WTF is he thinking smh.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

I’d like to hear the opinions of NYers and L.A. peeps about this appointment.

        • Alma98

I would too, because all I remember is people saying he supports stop & frisk. Perhaps gn could give us some info.

          • pamelabrown53

Just speculation here but maybe he’s just trying to assuage some fears of folks who didn’t vote for him. Bratton will not set policy; De Blasio campaigned on eradicating “Stop and Frisk”. Need more info. before I do what the emoprogs have done with so many of PBO’s appointments. Maybe he thinks that the racists in the NYPD will have an easier transition under Bratton?

          • Alma98

Could be Pamela, I guess we’ll see.

          • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

            Good point, Pamela!

          • gn

If Bratton steps up community policing and ends stop & frisk, then I have no complaint. de Blasio doesn’t have to cater to his non-voters; his win was of landslide proportions and he needs to dance with those who brought him (I think that black voters especially are not trying to hear any more excuses as to why our issues should take a back seat after delivering a win). de Blasio should make an explicit statement of where he’s going in terms of crime policy (if he hasn’t already, I haven’t checked).

          • pamelabrown53

I agree, gn. However, there’s a Wreck List diary on GOS that looks like a gazillion previous emo-prog diaries. I would hope De Blasio is not “catering” to non-voters but just trying to implement his policy as seamlessly as possible. I just can’t go the emo-prog route out of the gate: I need more proof before I’m willing to get my outrage on.

          • gn

Emos are pretty much always out of pocket. Too early to tell which way the wind is blowing, but de Blasio needs to follow through on his stop and frisk promises. I’m with you: waiting for more proof before declaring anything either way.

          • gn

Waiting to see what policies Bratton is going to put into place in light of the city’s known and expressed discontent with stop & frisk. I saw a news story which stated that the practice has already decreased. But if de Blasio reneges on this promise, he’s going to have a very difficult term, and it will be one term IMO. We’ll see. I’m with Rev Al.

        • jds09

I’ll check with my younger brother who’s astute and his mail routes are in the community. He chats with folks ALL day.

STATEMENT BY REV. AL SHARPTON REGARDING THE APPOINTMENT OF BILL BRATTON AS POLICE COMMISSIONER OF NEW YORK CITY

          December 5, 2013—(New York, NY)

“I had a long phone conversation yesterday with Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio about his choice of Bill Bratton as the next Police Commissioner of New York City, and I spoke this morning with Bill Bratton. I have worked in both adversarial and positions… of alliance with Bill Bratton, and I shared my views on both with Mayor-elect de Blasio and him.

When Bill Bratton served in New York City under Rudy Giuliani, we had a very distant and adversarial relationship, but when he served in Los Angeles, he and I and the Los Angeles Chapter of National Action Network worked closely on gang violence and police misconduct matters. Mr. Bratton knows of my concerns and the concerns of others about racial profiling in stop and frisk policing but at the same time is aware of our desire to continue the decrease of violence and crime in our community.

I told Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio and Commissioner Bill Bratton that I hope they will work with a broad cross-sector of New Yorkers to continue the pursuit of both and we discussed meeting over the next few days to discuss these matters with him and with other civil rights and community leaders.”

Obamacare covers babies too, despite a ‘Post’ report
    By Dan Goldberg 3:49 p.m. Dec. 2, 2013

On Sunday morning, the New York Post published the story of Cornelius Kelly, who was dismayed to learn that the New York State health insurance plans could cover his wife and three older children, but that he would have to buy a separate plan for his 18-month-old daughter.

Fox News ran with the story on Monday morning, and had Kelly on to retell the tale. Within hours, the story had spread.

The problem is, Kelly appears to have been given some bad information. Family plans in New York cover the whole family. No baby has to wait until its second birthday to join a family plan, as the article described Kelly being told.

“It was 100 percent false,” said Bill Schwarz, a spokesman for the state’s Department of Health. “Of course, everyone is covered in the family policy.”

Kelly, who in 2011 ran and lost on the Conservative Party line for a seat on the Suffolk County legislature, said he was told three times by different state representatives that his toddler would require a separate insurance plan, and that his daughter would have to turn 2 before she could be covered under a family plan.

The mixup appears to have been rooted in Kelly’s application, which originally listed only three of his children even though he has four. When the clerical error was discovered, it was corrected, Schwarz said.

      • jds09

Bingo. Kelly was lying. More importantly, he was given the benefit of the doubt against all common sense. In what world would this legislation target babies. smh

        • JojoRaze

Don’t you know ththat since PBO is pro-choice, he’d support a bill that denies a real life baby health coverage?

          • conlakappa

The anti-choice crowd does call him babykiller but that might be about stem-cell research.

    • gn

That. says. it. all. about the far right. The Pope is a staunch conservative whose only area of disagreement with them is that he’s a Christian following a mandate to help the poor. That’s all it took for him to become enemy #1. A Christian who follows Jesus, what a concept!

      • JojoRaze

I don’t put much stock in what the pope says but I’m glad he reminded his allies in the white right dominionist community that conspicuous and rapacious accumulation of money, goods and property for the benefit of self alone aka GREED, is, was and forever will be in the eyes of Christ a SIN. And it’s true whether you read the Douay or KJV of the Bible.

    • rikyrah

they really are attacking THE POPE?

      • BoomerGal

Probably b/c he is a true socialist.

Ok guys. So there is this FT Days Microbiology MT position listed for the LSU INTERIM HOSPITAL in NOLA. I just so happen to be an experienced Micro MT who likes working FT days. So I’m thinking about applying. I currently live in BR LA which is an hour out of NO LA. I really wanted to move back home yo NOLA, but Micro position like I want are very hard to come by. yall know I spend a good bit of time in NOLA and honestly I’m getting tired of driving back and forth to NOLA just to spen 2-3 hours with the fam just to have you drive back the same day cause I’ve got to work.

So I’m figured I’d apply and ask for $1 more than I earn now, but my friend said I should ask for $2.
I was just thinking the same thing. I figured might as well since my lease isn’t up to June and I’ll have to either break it or keep commuting until I can break it comfortably

PBomb, I hate getting old! The name of this woman is not in my “remembry” as one of my grandkiddos says but her face is so familiar & what she was writing in the ’80’s. I think I heard her speak at a conference I attended back in maybe ’86 or ’87.

If this is the same person, her talk was excellent & I am ashamed at not remembering her name. BTW, great series this week.

    • JojoRaze

Granny, I’m so using your nieto’s ‘remembry’ statement. It’s a perfect neologism for memory you keep on forgetting.
