    — –The number of new U.S. applications for unemployment benefits fell by 21,000 to 323,000 in the week ended Nov. 16, putting new claims at the lowest level since late September, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected claims to fall to 334,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. Veteran’s day took place during the week and sometimes holidays can cause claims to decline by more than they usually do. The average of new claims over the past month, a more reliable gauge than the volatile weekly number, dropped by 6,750 to 338,500.

IMO, there’s another reason for this freak-out. Oprah said “they need to die.” That’s a punch in the face to most white people.

They are so used to folks catering to their feelings and sensibilities, from “tone policing”, “when talking about race POCs must use disclaimers”, “talking about race at all is playing the race card” but most importantly, POC must always want to convince them that we’re okay (respectability politics) and show them a deep desire for them to change their minds.

A while ago, I had coffee with a self described white progressive (loves to be on the other side of riot police) liberal lesbian, who when trying to establish a relationship with me invited me to “call her on her white privilege in the use of her language”. When I told her I didn’t care, no big discussion, that her language wasn’t important to me. It freaked her the fuck out.

It’s the waiting for them to die bit that kills them. POC know that demographics are on our side. The ground has changed between their feet, they’ve been asleep, POC cannot sleep and thrive in this country.

      • itgurl_29

Yes, I loved when she said that. It really hurt them because it showed just how little she gives a damn about them.

      • conlakappa

Reminds me of having to school my English roommate when in Italy and a colleague back here in D.C. about how I feel about something that has to do with them, not my particular concerns.

    Sepia♥/POU FAM♥ —- INTERESTING historical NOTE —

—-Acquilla Clemons: The black witness the Warren Commission ignored – —

    — –Lee Harvey Oswald allegedly committed two murders on November 22, 1963 — and while the first will forever make him infamous, it was the second that arguably helped convict him in the court of public opinion as the lone assassin of President John F. Kennedy.

Not long after the shooting of President Kennedy, Oswald is said to have been spotted acting suspicious at the intersection of East 10th street and Patton Avenue in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas around 1 p.m. A patrolman, Officer J.D. Tippit, reportedly stopped him for questioning. The official story is that Oswald became irate, drew a weapon and killed Tippit in cold blood. He is then supposed to have fled the scene on foot.

He was next spotted on W. Jefferson Boulevard where he entered a movie theater (which has since become a national landmark)
and was eventually apprehended by Dallas police who somewhat
inexplicably already had an exact description of him as the likely
    killer of the president.
    – — -SNIP – —
And although the Warren Commission interviewed 13 witnesses connection to the Tippit murder, only two said they actually saw it take
place. One, Domingo Benavides, could never positively identify Oswald as the shooter, and the other, Helen Markham, was inconsistent with her descriptions. She both described Oswald accurately (thin, balding) and inaccurately (pudgy with “bushy” hair.)

Yet there was one witness, with a clear view of Tippit’s shooting,
who was startlingly consistent with her story. She also happened to be African-American. Her name was Acquilla Clemons and among conspiracy theorists her testimony is legendary because it was never formally taken.

    THERE IS MORE ——-

QUESTION? – –“WHYCOME” this investigation continues? hmmm. .

G.O.P. Maps Out Waves of Attacks Over Health Law
By JONATHAN WEISMAN and SHERYL GAY STOLBERG
    Published: November 20, 2013

The memo distributed to House Republicans this week was concise and blunt, listing talking points and marching orders: “Because of Obamacare, I Lost My Insurance.” “Obamacare Increases Health Care Costs.” “The Exchanges May Not Be Secure, Putting Personal Information at Risk.” “Continue Collecting Constituent Stories.”

The document, the product of a series of closed-door strategy sessions that began in mid-October, is part of an increasingly organized Republican attack on the Affordable Care Act, President Obama’s signature legislative initiative. Republican strategists say that over the next several months, they intend to keep Democrats on their heels through a multilayered, sequenced assault.

So Far, Obamacare Has Taken Only a Modest Hit in Polls
    —By Kevin Drum
    Wed Nov. 20, 2013 12:06 PM PST

Yesterday I misread a poll question about Obamacare, initially thinking it was about whether people wanted to make changes to the law. Today, though, CBS has a poll question that really does ask this. Here it is:

This isn’t very different from Kaiser tracking polls in the past. In the most recent one, among people who expressed an opinion, 56 percent wanted the law kept as is or enhanced, while 44 percent wanted it repealed.

    http://www.motherjones.com/kevin-drum/2013/11/so-far-obamacare-has-taken-only-modest-hit-polls

    • crazycanuck

I think word of mouth is help drastically.

      • jds09

I’ve been following the Kaiser polls, its remained pretty steady. This reminds me of the polling of PBO v Mittens, a lot of noise but the fundamentals remained the same.

    Valerie Jarrett dating Ahmad Rashad
    By Richard Johnson

Ahmad Rashad, a Pro Bowl wide receiver, has made yet another great catch. The Minnesota Vikings legend has rebounded from his broken marriage to Sale Johnson — the ex-wife of Jets owner Woody Johnson — and is said to be dating Valerie Jarrett, President Obama’s most trusted senior adviser.

He has several wives and multiple women bearing his children. He’s always struck me as a little too smooth but whatever works for him. His and Phylicia’s daughter is the only child we really hear about and she seems a kind, well-adjusted person.

    — –A White House spokeswoman confirmed early Thursday that President Barack Obama signed a letter to Afghan President Hamid Karzai pledging that U.S. forces who may remain in the country for the next decade will respect the dignity of Afghans in their homes and only enter their residences when it is essential to do so.

“I know you have been concerned for some time to limit the impact of
the conflict in Afghanistan on the Afghan people, with particular
attention to the sensitive issue of the safety and privacy of people in
their homes,” Obama wrote in the letter dated Wednesday and released by Karzai’s office. “Over time, and especially in the recent past, we have redoubled our efforts to ensure that Afghan homes are respected by our forces and that our operations are conducted consistent with your law. Do we think the Republicans are stopping the Obama nominees because one is black and two are women? Let’s be fair. Janice Rogers Brown, a George W. Bush appointee on the D.C. Circuit, is an African-American woman.

Why yes Gail, “we” do think that.

The Republicans are happy to nominate women and people of color who toe the line on preserving the white male power structure.

Women and minorities who represent the mainstream of political thought in their respective groups are completely unwanted by the Confederate Party.

  • lamh36

    Good morning guys.

My birthday month is almost over and next month means it’s the end of the year soon and I’ve started thinking about my New Years resolutions already.

I’m 37 now so I’ve decided to come up with a 3 year plan on goals I want to reach before turning 40.

One is to “get my money right”, I’m tired of not having my credit and my saving where they need to be. I hope to buy a home someday and to do that I need to fix my credit. I have no idea how I’m gonna do that, but I’m research it so come January, Ima be ready to go.

Secondly, I need to get my health right. I’m sick and tired of being sick & tired. I know that a lot of my joint and back pain is due to my weight, but I admit I haven’t really done enough to try to lose weight, so I need to get on that. I want to try to do it on my own with weight loss surgery being my last resort.

So anyway that’s just 2, but they are BIG ONES, but I may add more later as I progress.

it’s beyond time to do better by my body and my finances. I’ve been working too hard and too long to not have anything to show for it.

anyway, I won’t bore you guys anymore with my self-reflection.

    • MsKitty

Good luck on both, especially #2. It’s one thing for people to suggest to you that you need to lose weight, exercise, eat right, etc., and on some subconscious level you know they’re right. But it’s only when you have that “a ha” moment when you realize this is what YOU want for yourself that it will happen. For me it was getting tired of feeling like crap all the time and getting too big for my third size in a 1.5 year period.

Almost 4 years and 55 pounds later I haven’t looked back. It wasn’t easy getting there and maintenance mode is no joke either, but I try to be as disciplined as I can. And on the other side of that I don’t beat myself up if I have a setback with the numbers on the scale creeping up a bit. I just shake it off and keep going.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

    • conlakappa

Best to you! It really is the little things that will help in your efforts on both. Once you’ve set aside money for your regular expenses [and those bills you've paid on time!], make sure you put even just a few dollars away for savings. It’ll add up. Weight: don’t say I need to lose [x] pounds but rather a series of 5, 10, or 20 pounds. No more than 20/series! That way, when you reach that initial goal you can celebrate and focus on that next 5, 10, or 20 pounds. What can happen is that the ideal number can seem so far away that it’s discouraging and hard to imagine. Baby steps. Also, make sure you stay hydrated and keep your system running well. Use resources that are available to you for free from the government like: http://win.niddk.nih.gov/ There is a bunch of stuff available at NIH, even tools for family reunions so health can be as much a part of those events as the Saturday picnic!

    • rikyrah

setting the goals is the first step.
start small with both of them.

    • Aquagranny911

You are doing excellent to set these goals. Do things in small steps. Savings for example can start with bringing a coffee from home rather than buying at a coffee shop. Put that $3 or whatever in a jar until you have enough to start a savings account at a credit union. Keep that account separate & special. Figure out what you can substitute or do without each week & add that to your account. It will build up.

The biggest thing is pay off your credit cards by doubling up the payments on the one with the highest interest rate. Pay minimum on the others. When that one is paid off start the same on the others until you are debt free. You actually should be able to do that in a year or so if you resist the temptation to use the card to charge stuff while you are doing that. When your cards are paid up don’t cancel them. Because your credit report will show you have cards with available credit that are paid off. This will raise your credit score a bunch.

Walking is excellent exercise & you can start slow & build it up. If you are walking two or more miles a day for example, you are going to lose weight. A walking buddy would be a great help if you know someone who will join you. There are tons of programs available on the internet for diet & exercise.

Forgive all the advice, just call me Dear Granny, I can’t help myself. At my age advice is one thing I never seem to run out of. Best of luck to you in reaching your goals ♥

    • vulcan_girl

Hey, Lamh, I feel you on the weight loss thing. Like MsKitty said, it’s not going to work til you get to your aha moment. I got my moment last year and lost 25 lbs by cutting out a lot of junk food and laying off the fried food. I’ve been slacking a lot lately so I’ve stopped losing, but I’m going to get back to it!

      You can do it!

  • TresL

Oprah’s recent comments have made me think back to when she endorsed Senator Obama and how the pundits thought it was so cute that Oprah thought she could get her viewers to buy Barack Obama the way they bought every thing else she recommended. It really tickled them; but, it angered white women who somehow thought Oprah should back the female candidate and some accused her of backing PBO because he was black completely ignoring the fact that he was her Senator. Those were the good old days and so many people were forced to eat crow after that election and they’re still pissed off about it.

    • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

THIS. I think that’s why she had problems getting her network off the ground. Miss Ann — her main demographic — revolted and wouldn’t watch OWN.

      • rikyrah

And still, Oprah did what Black women do…they find a way to make it work.

          And that’s why they mad.

          • itgurl_29

Yup. Oprah had to step into the new generation. She had an old-school media mentality that says in order to get big numbers you need white viewers. That’s not true anymore. And when she saw how disloyal Miss Ann was, I think if finally opened her eyes that she could cater to a black audience and still get huge ratings.

Grace was a ho. Didn’t care if the man was married or not. Daddy’s money greased the skids for her being a Princess. With the money, the Royal Court let that ‘ virginity’ thing slde.

          • MsKitty

A few years ago I read a bio of Grace Kelly by the author who wrote “Call Her Miss Ross.” Very sad story, especially after marrying Ranier. Grace quickly got bored with life in Monaco and was trying to quietly ease back into acting. At one point Alfred Hitchcock cast her as the lead in “Marnie” but once the subjects found out they weren’t having it. The anger got so bad that the palace poobahs had to take Grace aside to tell her that the acting career was over and she’d best deal with it.

From there, she had a hard time coping and spent much of her remaining years dealing with depression. Grace was a bird in a gilded cage for real.

          • crazycanuck

That pretty sad, reminds me of the woman who married the Japanese Prince. Highly educated woman reduced to nothing.

          • Town

I think part of her problem is she couldn’t produce a boy…as if she could produce a boy but there was pressure from the royal handlers to produce a boy, all she had was a girl and so they’ve been rude to her ever since.

It’s usually the royal handlers, not the royals themselves, that’s the problem (see: British Royal Family/Diana).

There was the personal like I think they’d all slept with the same men including the guy who was then Paulette Goddard’s husband. Then there was the professional that everyone had to have her own spacious dressing room/trailer and everyone had to have her own driver, each coming increasingly later because she thought she was the most important. If you’ve seen the movie, the amused blonde fellow sales girl who’s mocking Crystal is still alive and dishes aplenty. I think that scene was shot so late because of the late-to-work behavior that the acid look she’s giving is real.

That same friend with whom I counted links were talking the past year about old Fred Mertz. We came to the conclusion that he was a closet clase: he’d been married once in his 20s and divorced soon after. One of the nuggets in his IMDB is that he had punched out Clifton Webb. To Obama Haters: The Actual Evidence of Obama’s Achievements Shows You’re on the Wrong Side of History— Again
November 19, 2013 By Frank Schaeffer

There are Obama haters aplenty, have been from Day One: Snooty left wingers have offered advice he should have, could have, would have followed to success if the president had just listened to his white betters in the media. Hate-filled right wing bigots have jostled to be the loudest claiming Obama isn’t a “real American,” not one of us, from somewhere else, a liar, a communist, a Muslim, the anti-Christ… and that’s just a start.

Economists have lined up on all sides to predict his policies would fail, that we were headed for depression, world economic collapse, and higher unemployment. Hawks told us the president was giving in to terror, maybe he was a terrorist himself. Doves told us he’s a mass murderer, using drones to target the innocent.

Civil libertarians told us Obama is creating a surveillance state, that he’s Orwell’s worst nightmare personified. That, of course is when he’s not selling us down the river to terrorists, as the Religious Right claims or turning our children into gays.

G.O.P. Maps Out Waves of Attacks Over Health Law

WASHINGTON — The memo distributed to House Republicans this week was concise and blunt, listing talking points and marching orders: “Because of Obamacare, I Lost My Insurance.” “Obamacare Increases Health Care Costs.” “The Exchanges May Not Be Secure, Putting Personal Information at Risk.” “Continue Collecting Constituent Stories.”

The idea is to gather stories of people affected by the health care law — through social media, letters from constituents, or meetings during visits back home — and use them to open a line of attack, keep it going until it enters the public discourse and forces a response, then quickly pivot to the next topic.

Dear Harry….Don’t talk about it, BE about it.
    —————————-
Harry Reid May Nuke The Filibuster This Week: Dem Sources
    SAHIL KAPUR – NOVEMBER 21, 2013, 9:20 AM EST

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) may invoke the “nuclear option” and reform the filibuster as early as Thursday, multiple top Democratic Senate sources told TPM.

The move would likely scrap the filibuster for executive and judicial nominations, but not legislation or Supreme Court nominees, as Reid signaled earlier this week, and the sources confirmed. He has discussed the matter with his leadership team and members.

“I’m not talking about changing anything dealing with the Supreme Court or dealing with basic legislation,” he said Tuesday. “I am talking about executive nominations.”

Reid has grown fed-up with Republican obstruction and has growing support within his conference to nuke the minority blocking tactic. He needs 50 Democratic votes to bypass the two-thirds majority required under regular order for a rules change.

Multiple Democratic senators who have traditionally opposed filibuster reform — including Sens. Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA) — have recentlycome out for a rules change after the GOP’s mass blockade of President Barack Obama’s three nominees to the powerful D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, regardless of their qualifications.

Sen. Carl Levin (MI) is the only Democrat on record against invoking the nuclear option.

Reid is set to meet with advocates for filibuster reform Thursday afternoon in the Capitol.

    — – – -The case against a teen who was arrested and spent three years in one of the country’s most notoriously violent prisons was dropped, without apology.

    – -In May of 2010, Kalief Browder, a 16-year-old sophomore in high school, was walking home in his Bronx, N.Y., neighborhood after a party. Someone told the police that Browder robbed him weeks ago. Cuffs were applied, and Browder was slammed behind one of the toughest prisons on the planet. The 16-year-old would stay there for three years without ever being charged.
“It’s very hard when you are dealing with dudes that are big and have weapons and shanks and there are gangs,” Browder told WABC-TV

No, CNN, Serena Williams Did Not Need To Be ‘Rescued’ By A Man- –

—- –Today, CNN published an interview with Serena Williams’ tennis coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, under the histrionic title, “The man who rescued Serena Williams.”
But the tennis superstar, often referred to simply as Serena, is one of the toughest competitors in any sport and, of all people, did not need to be “rescued” by anyone. The depiction of Serena as a “damsel in distress” — waiting to be saved by her Prince Charming — couldn’t be further from the truth.

Without a doubt, Mourathoglou is a well-regarded coach and Serena has performed incredibly well since their partnership began in 2012,
winning four Grand Slams and 16 tournaments overall. But the reality is Mourathoglou struck gold when Serena agreed to take him on. Prior to teaming up with Serena he coached a string of promising but largely anonymous professional players, none of whom ever won a Grand Slam and only one of which — Marcos Baghdatis — ever cracked the top 10 of the world rankings. Just before Serena agreed to work with him, he was coaching Grigor Dimitrov, a Bulgarian player currently ranked 23rd.
Serena, on the other hand, won 13 Grand Slams and had been the top ranked woman in the world (5 different times) prior to ever working with Mourthoglou. So who “rescued” whom?
