Thursday Open Thread: Black Pirates

John Julian (c. 1701 – 26 March 1733, aged 32) was the first recorded black pirate to operate in the New World, as the pilot of the ship Whydah.

Julian was a half-blood Miskito Indian who joined Samuel Bellamy early in his brief career. He became a pilot for the Whydah at 16 years old, an important assignment that would require him to use his vast navigational skills to guide the Whydah into narrow coves to hide from navy ships. Julian was one of 30 to 50 people of African descent in the pirate crew — all were treated as equals.

Julian’s life became more difficult after he survived the Whydah wreck in 1717. He was jailed in Boston but apparently never indicted. He was likely sold into slavery, the “Julian the Indian” bought by John Quincy — whose grandson, President John Quincy Adams, became a staunch abolitionist.

A purported “unruly slave,” Julian the Indian was sold to another owner and tried often to escape. During one attempt, he killed a bounty hunter who was trying to catch him. He was executed on March 26, 1733.

Hendrich Quintor, a free black man of Dutch and African descent, “went on the account” when the Spanish brigantine he was aboard was captured by French pirates in the early 1700’s. He was one of 30 seamen of African descent on board the Whydah, along with about 20 more black pirates on the other ships in “Black” Sam Bellamy’s flotilla. Quintor, perhaps the son of a sailor, spent most of his life at sea. After joining the pirates of the Whydah, Quintor earned a reputation as one of the toughest pirates on the ship.

Quintor was not aboard the Whydah when she sank in 1717. But he didn’t survive long after. He was captured in 1717, found guilty of piracy, and was sentenced to death by hanging. The town square was packed near the gallows where Quintor and five other pirates met their death. To the audience, it was entertainment.

A mulatto born in Amsterdam in 1692, Quintor served proudly aboard the Whydah, a pirate shipwreck site discovered in 1984 by underwater explorer Barry Clifford and his team. Clifford continues to direct the ongoing excavation of the wreck in a project that has been described by state and federal regulatory agencies as “a model for private archaeology”. The National Geographic Real Pirates website said “commissioned in London in 1715, the Whydah was originally built to carry slaves from Africa to the New World. Cramped compartments in the ship’s hold were constructed to house human cargo on their journey to Caribbean sugar plantations. As a slave ship, the Whydah‘s state-of-the art design included a sleek silhouette that made the ship unusually fast and maneuverable. An arsenal of weapons provided defense against attacks by African and European warships—or pirates.”

The Whydah left on her maiden voyage in early 1716, traveling out the English Channel and into the Atlantic, where she then turned south toward Africa. Like other slave ships, she worked her way around the West African coast from modern Gambia and Senegal to Nigeria and Benin, picking up captives along the way. Eventually she landed in Ouidah (Wee-dah)—the slave port from which the Whydah had taken her name.

On the evening of April 26, 1717, a dense fog rolled in. An arctic gale from Canada was colliding with a warm front moving northward from the Caribbean. Their confluence produced one of the worst storms ever to strike Cape Cod. The nor-easter hit the Whydah full force. The ship ran hard aground on a sandbar. The mainmast and other rigging snapped like twigs, and the Whydah rolled over. Although the beach was just 500 feet away, the bitter ocean temperatures were cold enough to kill the strongest swimmer within minutes.

Of the 146 men aboard the Whydah that night, only two survived. Somehow Thomas Davis, the carpenter, and John Julian, the Miskito pilot, managed to swim to shore and scale the steep sand cliffs. Young John King—the boy who threatened to kill himself if he couldn’t to join the pirate crew—did not survive. He died pinned to the seabed by a cannon, his leg bone, shoe, and stocking, later discovered by Barry Clifford’s Whydah Expedition.

    Ruth Bader Ginsburg Is Irreplaceable
All you liberals trying to push her out, think about that.
    By Dahlia Lithwick

… Over at the Atlantic, professor Garrett Epps has just written in defense of Ginsburg. You should read the whole piece, but two important points he makes are worth repeating: Ginsburg plays a crucially important role in the Roberts Court as the senior justice on the liberal bloc, not just in terms of assigning opinions but in terms of writing them. If anything, Ginsburg has been stronger in recent years than ever and has been a crisper, more urgent voice for women’s rights, minority rights, affirmative action, and the dignity of those who often go unseen at the high court than ever before. She has gone from rarely reading her dissents from the bench to doing so with great frequency, calling out the majority for what she sees as grave injustices and proving that her voice is both fiery and indispensible. Telling her that her work is awesome, but it’s time to move on is tantamount to saying that a liberal is a liberal and that Ginsburg brings nothing to the table that another Obama appointee will not replicate. That analysis suffers from exactly the same realpolitik flaw Ginsburg’s critics ascribe to her: that counting to four, or five, is more important that the justice herself. Ginsburg, like Antonin Scalia, is writing those dissents for law students, for the case books, and for Congress. Not all justices are created equal in that regard…

It strikes me as interesting that regular court-watchers tend to be affronted by suggestions that it’s time for Ginsburg to go, just as political scientists are astonished that it isn’t. Maybe Linda Greenhouse, Epps, Bazelon, and others are considered by the Ginsburg’s-got-to-go crowd as simply captive to the same “justices aren’t political” brainwashing as Ginsburg, but maybe they just see Ginsburg through a different lens…

Reproductive rights advocate and writer Jessica Mason Pieklo suggests that it’s not the legacy of Roe we should be obsessing about anyhow, but rather why it is that Democrats can’t seat progressives no matter which party is in power. I agree. I’m not naive enough to suppose that a bird in the hand is always the answer, but the fact that President Obama can’t get a civil rights lawyer confirmed to a civil rights position in this political climate or seat a surgeon general who believes gun deaths are connected to public health tells me that the argument that he could easily confirm a Ginsburg 2.0 is naive as well. Ginsburg herself often says that the chances of another Ginsburg being confirmed to the court today are negligible. It’s perverse in the extreme to seek to bench Ginsburg the fighter, simply because Senate Democrats are unwilling or unable to fight for the next Ginsburg.

An Enraged John Boehner Blows Up After Obama Thwarts His Plan To Screw the Uninsured
    By: Jason Easley
    Wednesday, March, 26th, 2014, 5:13 pm

John Boehner flew into an angry rage after finding out that the next phase in his plan to keep millions uninsured had been derailed by President Obama.

What Speaker Boehner is so angry about is the fact that the Obama administration won’t screw over people who begin the enrollment process by March 31. According to the HHS blog, “We are ready for consumers. It’s now time for you to check out your options and signup by March 31. And don’t worry, for those consumers who are in line by the March 31st deadline to complete enrollment—either online or over the phone – we’ll make sure you get covered. Just like Election Day, if you are in line when the polls close, you get to vote. We won’t close the door on those who tried to get covered and were unable to do so through no fault of their own. So, those who were in line or had technical problems with the website can quickly come back and sign up as soon as possible.”

What is really ticking Republicans off is that Obama administration is allowing people weren’t able to sign up due to the website issues an extra few weeks to finish the enrollment process.

Boehner and his House Republicans thought that they had it all figured out. They were getting ready for another round of Obamacare “horror stories” based on the people who may have not been able to complete their ACA signups high consumer demand around the deadline, or the previous website issues in October of 2013.

    • Town

Don’t worry, they’ll use somebody who “tried” to sign up at 11:59pm on March 31st & couldn’t get through as their horror story.

      • jds09

Smh….they really have nothing. They based their whole comeback on defeating Obama and repealing ACA. Since both have failed, they have nothing. Seriously, they were gonna try a demonize the demand for a product. In capitalist America, they wanted to trash demand. Boehner may be the 1st Speaker (that I know of) that will be hospitalized for alcoholic poisoning.

Anti-Obamacare Governor Now Encouraging Residents To Enroll Under Health Law

By Sy Mukherjee on March 24, 2014 at 12:43 pm

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R), an ardent Affordable Care Act critic, is now encouraging residents to transition into new health plans under the very reform law that he once refused to help implement.

Walker told the Washington Examiner’s Philip A. Klein that he has instructed state agencies to work with individuals who are transitioning into plans offered on Wisconsin’s Obamacare marketplace. That includes both the previously uninsured and poor residents just above the poverty level who are being siphoned out of the state’s Medicaid program, BadgerCare, and into private ACA plans under Walker’s conservative alternative to Obamacare’s optional Medicaid expansion.

Just two years ago, Walker was singing a very different tune. He had refused to create a statewide ACA marketplace — thereby also forgoing significant federal funding for Obamacare outreach efforts — and said he wouldn’t lift a finger to help implement the law until the Supreme Court decided the law’s fate. In fact, Wisconsin’s spending on ACA outreach is the lowest in the nation at just 46 cents per capita.

Walker eventually went even further than that. He said that he wouldn’t do anything about the health law at all until after the 2012 November elections, in the hopes that Mitt Romney would win and repeal the law, making implementation efforts moot.

But now that Obama has been re-elected and the ACA is actually going into effect, Walker is admitting that it could provide a boost for many Wisconsinites. “I don’t want people to fall between the cracks,” said Walker in his Examiner interview. “[U]ntil we can change and come up with something better to replace the law, we still care about our constituents, we still want people to do well.”

    • Alma98

That’s because his goggle eyed homunculus ass (hat tip to Charles Pierce lol) is tied in the polls with Mary Burke.

Survivors Of Domestic Violence Now Have Better Access To Obamacare Benefits
By Tara Culp-Ressler on March 27, 2014 at 8:54 am

Survivors of domestic violence who are living separately from an abusive spouse will now be able to claim tax credits to help them afford an Obamacare plan, thanks to new rules being developed by the federal government. Before the change, these individuals were locked out of federal assistance for health care unless they filed joint taxes with their abuser.

Obamacare’s tax credits are intended to ensure that insurance plans on the new marketplaces are affordable for the Americans who may otherwise struggle to pay for health care. Early estimates suggest that up to 80 percent of the people signing up for Obamacare will qualify for some type of federal assistance, allowing some Americans to pay less than $100 per month in premiums for their health insurance.

But in order for married people to qualify, the health law requires them to file their taxes jointly. If they file separately, they lose out on the federal assistance altogether. Domestic violence prevention advocates argue that policy ends up harming victims of abuse — particularly because domestic violence is more concentrated among low-income households, and the victims who are financially dependent on their abusers are less likely to be able to extricate themselves from the relationship.

Last week, a group of 79 lawmakers, led by Reps. Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Lloyd Doggett (D-TX), urged the Treasury Department to change this policy and safeguard victims of domestic violence. It only took a few days for Treasury officials to agree.

“For victims of domestic abuse, contacting a spouse for purposes of filing a joint return may pose a risk of injury or trauma or, if the spouse is subject to a restraining order, may be legally prohibited. Your concerns are consistent to those expressed to us by numerous others in public comments and meetings,” the Treasury Department acknowledged on Wednesday in a written response to Slaughter and Doggett, explaining that the administration will work on finalizing a new rule on this issue.

—- — —The number of people who applied for U.S. unemployment benefits fell by 10,000 to 311,000 last week to mark the lowest level in four months, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected claims to
total 320,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis in the week ended March 22. The average of new claims over the past month declined by 9,500 to 317,750. That was the lowest level since last September, when claims fell sharply because of a major errors related to a computer upgrade in California’s system for processing claims. The four-week average is the lowest since 2007 if the reports distorted by California’s computer problems are excluded. The monthly figure smooths out the jumpiness in the weekly report and offers a better look at the underlying trend.
Also, the government said continuing claims decreased by 53,000 to a seasonally adjusted 2.82 million in the week ended March 15.
Continuing claims reflect the number of people already receiving benefits. Initial claims from two two weeks ago, meanwhile, were revised up to 321,000 from 320,000.

    — —Obamacare enrollments much stronger in blue states – – –

    — – –The states that are enrolling the highest percentage of their residents in “Obamacare” are largely places with Democratic governors who have strongly embraced the law and set up their own health exchanges to implement it, while many conservative-leaning states remain far behind, according to data released Thursday by the Kaiser Family Foundation, a non-partisan research group.

More than 30 percent of the people who can get subsidized insurance through the law are purchasing it in Vermont, Rhode Island, California, Connecticut and Washington, all states President Obama won in 2008 and 2012 and with liberal-leaning governors. On the other hand, a bloc of states in the South and West, such as South Dakota (9 percent), Iowa (10 percent) and New Mexico (10 percent), all of which have Republican governors and did not create their own insurance sites, are lagging far behind, as are Washington, D.C. (9 percent) and Hawaii (6 percent), both of which have had computer problems with their state-based systems.

The states with the highest percentages “were invested in the health reform law, so they have tried to make it work,” said Larry Levitt, a senior vice-president at Kaiser.
    — —SNIP – – –

    – –A few conservative-leaning states do stand out with high enrollment figures, particularly North Carolina, which has enrolled about 27 percent of its subsidy-eligible population, despite opposition to the law from its GOP-controlled legislature and Republican governor. Liberal activists say a coalition of groups have conducted outreach efforts throughout the state to make up for the lack of support from North Carolina’s elected officials.

His ass was trying to take a shot at The Heat (but really Lebron) by slickly implying the now iconic photo was done without knowing anything other than the victim was black. So Kobe in his infinite ignorance, proclaims he wouldn’t do that without understanding the facts and he just won’t defend any old black person just cuz they black. It is not two weeks after the pic that Kobe is saying this…its been 2 YEARS. 2 years later that is how he responds. — —Statement by the President on the Section 215 Bulk Metadata Program– –

    – – – – –Earlier this year in a speech at the Department of Justice, I announced a transition that would end the Section 215 bulk telephony metadata program as it previously existed and that we would establish a mechanism to preserve the capabilities we need without the government holding this bulk metadata. I did so to give the public greater confidence that their privacy is appropriately protected, while maintaining the tools our intelligence and law enforcement agencies need to keep us safe.

In that January 17 speech, I ordered that a transition away from the prior program would proceed in two steps. In addition to directing immediate changes to the program, I also directed the Intelligence Community and the Attorney General to use this transition period to develop options for a new approach to match the capabilities and fill gaps that the Section 215 program was designed to address without the government holding this metadata. I instructed them to report back to me with options for alternative approaches before the program comes up for reauthorization on March 28th. As part of this
process, we consulted with the Congress, the private sector, and privacy and civil liberties groups, and developed a number of alternative approaches.

Having carefully considered the available options, I have decided that the best path forward is that the government should not collect or hold this data in bulk. Instead, the data should remain at the telephone companies for the length of time it currently does today.
The government would obtain the data pursuant to individual orders from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) approving the use of specific numbers for such queries, if a judge agrees based on national security concerns. Legislation will be needed to permit the government to obtain this information with the speed and in the manner that will be required to make this approach workable.

    – – – –Obama, Pope Francis meet for first time
    – — – —President Barack Obama gave Pope Francis a bag of seeds as a gift, a fitting token as their first-ever meeting provided a fresh start of sorts between the administration and Catholic leadership after years of strained relations.

“These, I think, are carrots,” Obama told the Pontiff, showing him one pouch. The seeds were inside a box made from timber from the first cathedral to open in the United States, in Baltimore.

The two world leaders greeted each other with a smile and a handshake, and posed for pictures before sitting down across a table from each other.

It was an important meeting that had its share of light moments.

Towson University students win national debate championship
March 26, 2014|By Carrie Wells, The Baltimore Sun

Two Towson University students edged out 170 other teams to win a national debate championship held in Indiana this week, the second time in recent years a Towson team has netted national debate honors.

Ameena Ruffin and Korey Johnson, both from Baltimore, bested a team from the University of Oklahoma in the final round. Their argument likened police brutality, the prison-industrial complex and structural poverty issues to a warlike violence against African-Americans in the U.S. and identified solutions.

Ruffin and Johnson are the first black women to win a national debate championship tournament, according to the Cross Examination Debate Association. Another Towson team won at the same championship in 2008.

Amber Kelsie, one of two coaches for Towson’s debate program, compared the Cross Examination Debate Association national championship to the “Super Bowl” of debate championships. The students are preparing for a second challenge, the National Debate Tournament, later this week at the same location, Indiana University.

The Towson debate team was at the center of a controversy last fall when its members said the university was preventing it from participating in a tournament at Harvard University. Towson eventually relented and the team took part in that competition.

This is from Oct 24, 2013 on why the students were almost denied the opportunity to compete:

    — –Official Said He Told Christie of Lane Closings, Bridge Scandal Report Says — –

    — —–The Port Authority official who oversaw the lane closings at the George Washington Bridge said that he had informed Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey about it at a Sept. 11 memorial while the closings were occurring, according to an internal investigation released on Thursday by lawyers for the governor.

The official, David Wildstein, told Mr. Christie’s press secretary of the
Sept 11 conversation at a dinner in December just before his resignation from the Port Authority, according to the report.

The report said that Mr. Christie did not recall any such conversation and finds no evidence that he was involved in the scheme, which snarled traffic for thousands of commuters in Fort Lee, N.J., from Sept. 9 through the morning of Sept. 12.– – –

It was one of many revelations unearthed by the inquiry, commissioned by Mr. Christie’s office. into what prompted the lane closings and what role his administration played in it.

The report puts much of the blame for the closings on Bridget Anne Kelly, who was Mr. Christie’s deputy chief of staff until he fired her in January, and on Mr. Wildstein, a longtime Christie ally.

At one point, according to the report, Ms. Kelly directed an assistant in the governor’s office to delete an email in which Ms. Kelly had expressed pleasure at learning that the mayor of Fort Lee was angry about the closings. “Get rid of that,” she said, according to the
report. (The aide complied, but saved a copy.)

SmartyPants: President Obama’s Speech In Brussels – One Of The Most Important Of His Presidency

One of the things we know from reading about President Obama’s life story is that while he was practicing law in Chicago, he taught classes on the topic of “power.” I’ve always wished that either he or someone who attended one would outline the content of what he taught. Perhaps the President will do that once his second term is over.

He doesn’t tend to speak directly about the topic, but from listening to him refer to it in other contexts, what I’ve deduced is that he embraces the power of partnership as the alternative to our more traditional concept of the power of domination. Today the President began his speech in Brussels with a history lesson on the power of partnership vs the power of domination.

$1 Trillion Student Loan Debt Widens US Wealth Gap
    March 27, 2014 (AP)
    By CAROLYN THOMPSON Associated Press

Every month that Gregory Zbylut pays $1,300 toward his law school loans is another month of not qualifying for a decent mortgage.

Every payment toward their student loans is $900 Dr. Nida Degesys and her husband aren’t putting in their retirement savings account.

They believe they’ll eventually climb from debt and begin using their earnings to build assets rather than fill holes. But, like the roughly 37 million others in the U.S. saddled with $1 trillion in student debt, they may never catch up with wealthy peers who began life after college free from the burden.

The disparity, experts say, is contributing to the widening of the gap between rich and everyone else in the country.

“If you graduate with a B.A. or doctorate and you get the same job at the same place, you make the same amount of money,” said William Elliott III, director of the Assets and Education Initiative at the University of Kansas. “But that money will actually mean less to you in the sense of accumulating assets in the long term.”

Graduates who can immediately begin building equity in housing or stocks and bonds get more time to see their investments grow, while indebted graduates spend years paying principal and interest on loans. The standard student loan repayment schedule is 10 years but can be much longer.

The median 2009 net worth for a household without outstanding student debt was $117,700, nearly three times the $42,800 worth in a household with outstanding student debt, according to a report co-written by Elliott last November.

But we have had the cooperation of all current members of the Governor’s Office, former members of that Office, and other independent witnesses as well.

Earlier this week, the Green Bay Press-Gazette asked County Board candidate Jason Wisneski about a 2008 conviction for animal mistreatment for breaking his cat’s legs. Although Wisneski denied breaking his cat’s legs, he spent three days in jail after pleading guilty.

In response, Wisneski pointed to a 2007 tragedy, when his Democratic opponent, state Senator Dave Hansen, accidentally killed his 23-month-old granddaughter while backing out of the driveway.

Hey POU, FAM!!! Y’all remember the parents collective that I’ve been pushing? Well, one of our co-founders also works with an Asian organization. She is being honored on Monday AT THE WHITE HOUSE on Monday, March 31 as one of the Cesar E. Chavez “Champions of Change!” They mentioned our “Parents United” group in her write-up. We are BEYOND proud!!!

WASHINGTON, DC – On Monday, March 31st, the White House will honor 10 community leaders who embody the spirit of Cesar E. Chavez’ legacy. Each of the Cesar Chavez Champions of Change have committed themselves to improving the lives of others in their communities and across the country. At the core, all of our honorees represent the values and steadfast determination of Cesar Chavez to organize ourselves for a more just tomorrow.

Helen Gym, Board Member, Asian Americans United
    Philadelphia, PA

Helen Gym is a community and education leader whose work across different organizations supports the right to a quality public education for all children. A former school teacher and journalist, she leads the board of Asian Americans United, a 28-year old organization serving Philadelphia’s diverse Asian American and immigrant communities. At AAU, she has organized against predatory gambling and led a campaign to address human rights issues in immigration and deportation practices. She helped found a Chinatown-based
charter school serving many immigrant families and anchored a successful federal civil rights case focused on the responsibility of adults to create safe school environments free from bias and harassment. She is a co-founder of Parents United for Public Education, a citywide parent group that has successfully advocated for millions of dollars in new revenue for Philadelphia public schools. She is a frequent writer and contributor in local media circles; helped establish the city’s independent education newspaper, the Philadelphia Public School Notebook, as its first full-time editor; and is currently on the editorial board of Rethinking Schools, a social justice teaching journal.

Republicans losing it over new Obamacare data: Why their position is collapsing

Obamacare enrollment could hit 7 million before the midterms; meanwhile, GOP still has no answer for beneficiaries
    Brian Beutler

It’s a complete accident of legislative and administrative history that the fourth anniversary of the Affordable Care Act should fall the week before the end of the law’s first ever, six-month-long open-enrollment period. But it’s a great coincidence for those of us in the business of cutting through all the hyperbole that accompanies each ACA anniversary, because, for the first time since the law passed, there are real data, and real beneficiaries, to hold up against the spin.

And as I’ve been arguing for months now, the GOP’s position on the law can’t actually withstand on-the-ground realities.

Case in point: Terri Lynn Land — Michigan’s one-time Republican secretary of state, turned Senate candidate — held a first-ever conference call with reporters to trash the ACA on its fourth birthday. But confronted with the question of what happens to people with preexisting medical conditions if the GOP repeals the law (and thus eliminates the individual mandate) — Land’s press aide, Heather Swift, commandeered the call, and tried to take the whole thing off the record.

I wasn’t on the line, but Michigan Information and Research Service posted the audio here. (The call starts at 19:20 and the preexisting conditions question at 39:15.) I think the biggest tell of all is that Land doesn’t seem remotely prepared to address the real human consequences of repealing the law herself in any meaningful way. But almost as big is that her staff can’t either. The aide who leapt to Land’s defense made a glaring error after attempting to take the call off the record.

It has been suggested that we take our GOTV “road show” up to northern AZ also. Trouble is we do great in southeast AZ because we know people & have familia connections. Up north is way different. GOP Congressman Clarifies Controversial Remarks About Uninsured Americans
    By Jordyn Phelps@JordynPhelps Mar 27, 2014 9:56am

Credit: Healthcare.govRep. Bill Cassidy, the GOP frontrunner in the Louisiana Senate race against incumbent Democrat Sen. Mary Landrieu, is seeking to clarify a recent comment he made suggesting that the uninsured are “relatively less sophisticated, less comfortable with forms, less educated.”

In an audio recording obtained by BuzzFeed of Cassidy’s address to the Louisiana Oil and Gas Association last week, the representative from Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District laid out an alternative health care approach to the Affordable Care Act under which anyone who falls below a certain income level would automatically have a health savings account and catastrophic coverage unless they decide to opt out.

Washington Notebook: Pearce defends hiring fiery blogger
    By Michael Coleman/Journal Staff Writer
PUBLISHED: Thursday, March 27, 2014 at 12:05 am

WASHINGTON — Rep. Steve Pearce, R-N.M., on Wednesday defended his hiring of a communications director who wrote for the PolitixFireball blog, which has published inflammatory rhetoric about Jews, Muslims and President Barack Obama.

Pearce confirmed in a Journal interview Wednesday that his new spokeswoman, Rebekah Stevens, wrote for the controversial blog.

The website has affiliated Facebook and Twitter feeds. The blog and related social media accounts were focused on conservative issues and are well-known in New Mexico for confronting Democrats, journalists and others in sometimes inflammatory ways.

PolitixFireball’s Twitter account, which boasts more than 40,000 followers, is no longer accessible to the general public.

A screen capture of a PolitixFireball tweet, dated March 18 (the year is not specified) and posted Tuesday on the website of ProgressNow New Mexico, a progressive political group, says in response to another Twitter user: “I know the Jews went up in smoke … I think you’re wrong re: the economy.”

PolitixFireball also has referred to Santa Fe New Mexican reporter Milan Simonich as Slobodan Milosevic, the late Serbian president charged with war crimes, and equated President Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler. Another social media post from PolitixFireball asserted that Muslims are “blood lust” conquerors.

Mammy Revealed, and Not Just Her Red Petticoat

‘Gone With the Wind’ Prequel Coming in October

Mammy, the faithful slave in “Gone With the Wind,” may finally get her due — and a proper name.

More than 75 years after the publication of the epic novel by Margaret Mitchell, a prequel with Mammy at its center is set for release in October, the publisher said on Wednesday.

The completed book, “Ruth’s Journey,” is the fictional telling of the life of one of the novel’s central characters, a house servant called Mammy who otherwise remains nameless. The story begins in 1804, when Ruth is brought from her birthplace, the French colony of Saint-Domingue that is now known as Haiti, to Savannah, Ga. The Mitchell estate has authorized the prequel, which was written by Donald McCaig, the author of one of two authorized “Gone With the Wind” sequels, “Rhett Butler’s People,” from 2007. (The other was “Scarlett” by Alexandra Ripley, released in 1991.) “Gone With the Wind” won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1937 and has sold hundreds of millions of copies.

I am totally loving on the gift of garden seeds that PBO gave to the Pope. It’s tangible but powerfully symbolic. Seeds are life, hope & continuity. As a gardener myself, I can so appreciate the significance of this gift.

And El Papa, forgive my sin of envy because I so want some seeds from the WH gardens!
