Thursday Open Thread: Dr. John H. Clarke Debates Dr. Cornel West

We continue our look at the debate between Dr. John Henrik Clarke and Dr. Cornel West…

  • Family Wants Say in New King Memorial

ATLANTA — The family of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. has told Georgia’s governor that it wants input concerning plans for a monument to the civil rights leader.

A bill with bipartisan support calls for a monument to Dr. King to be
erected on the grounds of the Capitol or another prominent location.
Gov. Nathan Deal told a congregation at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Dr. King preached, in January that he would work with the legislature to secure a place at the Capitol for a memorial.

Eric Tidwell, managing director of Intellectual Properties Management, an entity run by the King family, sent a letter to the governor’s office
last week saying the estate owned all rights to Dr. King’s “name, image, likeness, words, rights of publicity, copyrighted works, recorded voice and trademark interests,” The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Mr. Tidwell said the estate was surprised not to have heard from the
governor about plans for a monument, which would be privately financed.

The number of people who applied for U.S. unemployment benefits fell by 9,000 to 315,000 in the week ended March 8, marking the lowest level since the end of November, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by MarketWatch expected claims to total 330,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. The average of new claims over the past month, a more reliable gauge than the volatile weekly number, declined by 6,250 to 330,500. That’s the lowest level since early December.

White House, Democrats Cry Foul Over GOP Push to Enforce Immigration, Other Laws

A House Republican bill aimed at forcing President Barack Obama to enforce immigration and other laws as they are written drew sharp rebukes Wednesday from the White House and House Democrats, who ripped the measure as anti-immigrant.

The legal dispute over President Barack Obama’s unilateral decision to suspend deportations for people brought to the country illegally by their parents, known as “dreamers,” has split the GOP and Democrats before.

Porsha Williams loses out in divorce settlement

Porsha Williams will receive just a car and her engagement ring in her divorce settlement.

The “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star’s marriage to former football player Kordell Stewart broke down last year and the pair’s divorce was signed off in December.

They have been going through the courts to work on a settlement, and now legal documents obtained by TMZ show that Williams received very little in the proceedings. The papers reveal she only gets to keep her Mercedes, the ring Stewart proposed with and her personal items. Stewart has also agreed to pay her $19,000 legal bill.

I read somewhere that there was NO PRENUP. How in the hell did she walk away with nothing? #bobblehead

She’s probably better off with nothing because I could easily see Kordell trying to snatch half of her RHOA earnings, since there was no pre-nup.

Porsha Williams Bounces Back from Divorce Disaster with Rich African Benefactor

*Could it be that Porsha Williams could care less about coming out on the short end of the stick as far as her divorce is concerned?

Maybe so ’cause according to sources, she’s rebounding nicely from ex-husband Kordell Stewart as she’s caught the eye of the wealthy son of an African dictator.

Reportedly the object of Porsha’s affection, er, attention these days is Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, the 42-year-old son of Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, president of Equatorial Guinea … since 1979.

Hmm, we wonder if she can pronounce dude’s name correctly ’cause we sure can’t. 🙂 Anyway, here’s what TMZ is reporting:

Mbasogo (the father) is known as one of Africa’s most brutal and corrupt rulers — not only for having his predecessor executed and political opponents tortured, but for pillaging his own country’s oil wealth … while its people live in abject poverty.

Americans Split on Obama as 69% Back Minimum Wage Hike

By Julianna Goldman Mar 11, 2014 7:00 PM CT

President Barack Obama is rebounding from record-low approval ratings as he remedies the botched rollout of his health-care website and moves past the budget standoffs of the last several years.

Less than eight months before the November midterm elections, Americans are evenly split, with 48 percent approving of Obama’s job performance, up from 42 percent in December — the biggest positive change of his presidency, according to a Bloomberg National Poll. He’s also registering an improved favorability rating at 49 percent, the highest since last June.

    • goldenstar

I’m not understanding the polling here. People want the minimum wage raised but don’t want people to lose jobs according to the pollsters. The pollsters raised the CBO report findings. Why bring up the CBO findings unless this is tied to polling about unemployed workers????

Creationists Attack Neil deGrasse Tyson for Blind Faith in Science

    By: Hrafnkell Haraldsson
    Thursday, March, 13th, 2014, 7:02 am

As you can imagine, the forces of the so-called Religious Right are really not happy with the new Fox series, Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey, which premiered Sunday night. The series is, of course, a reboot of the 1980 series, Cosmos: A Personal Voyage, which was hosted by astronomer and astrophysicist Carl Sagan. This time around the series is hosted by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson

Of course, when Sagan produced the original series, scientists could actually talk about science without being metaphorically burned at the stake. That is no longer true, and you might have heard how one local Fox station, KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City, managed to edit out the only mention of “evolution” in the series’ first episode.

Meanwhile, deGrasse finds himself attacked for an oxymoronic “blind faith” in science. Because, apparently, blind faith in the comprehension of the Cosmos of Late Bronze and Early Iron Age humans is so much more advanced, and trustworthy, than ours. If you see something bizarrely hypocritical about creationists attacking somebody for having “blind faith,” you’re not alone.

    • morphus

Creationist losers are always out of the bounds of reality.

    • TresL

I knew this was coming. They believe in every advancement that science and modern technology has created today and that they fully take advantage of but refuse to accept if it in regards to Creation. All they have to do is give God the credit for man’s discoveries, because he created man, and be done with it.

      • isonprize

TresL, you are much too generous. I’m inclined to think that these Luddites believe that the Earth is flat. (and that’s an insult to Luddites, because, at the very least, they were in favor of worker’s rights…)

The Media Gets It Wrong: Obamacare Didn’t Cost Alex Sink the Florida Special Election

    By: Jason Easley
    Wednesday, March, 12th, 2014, 2:36 pm

The media are parroting the Republican belief that Obamacare is the reason why Democrat Alex Sink lost a special House election in Florida last night, but actual polling of voters reveals that Sink’s position on the ACA was popular. She lost because the district is heavily Republican.

The conservative National Journal drew the conclusion that the result of the special election is the beginning of a Republican wave, “Tuesday night’s special election in Florida should be a serious scare for Democrats who worry that Obamacare will be a major burden for their party in 2014. Despite recruiting favored candidate Alex Sink, outspending Republicans, and utilizing turnout tools to help motivate reliable voters, Democrats still lost to Republican lobbyist David Jolly—and it wasn’t particularly close.”

The Los Angeles Times also blamed the ACA, Republicans scored a significant victory in a special congressional election Tuesday, holding on to a seat in a swing district in Florida that Democrats had high hopes of capturing after a campaign that focused heavily on President Obama’s healthcare law.

The Hill also parroted the Republican logic, “Republican David Jolly defeated Democrat Alex Sink in the special election to fill Florida’s 13th District on Tuesday night, delivering a stinging blow to Democrats that underscores their vulnerability to ObamaCare attacks.

Obamacare Co-Ops Defy Forecasts to Win Market Share

In Maine, the insurer that has enrolled the most Obamacare customers isn’t the state’s well-established Blue Cross Blue Shield plan, owned by WellPoint Inc. It’s WellPoint’s only rival: Maine Community Health Options, a startup that didn’t exist three years ago. The newcomer, funded primarily by taxpayer money lent under the U.S. health-care law, has won about 80 percent of the market so far in Maine’s new insurance exchange, exceeding its own expectations, said Kevin Lewis, the chief executive officer.

Obamacare opponents predicted early on that insurance co-ops created by the law would fail, and that much of the $2.1 billion they were loaned to get started would be lost. Instead, the 23 co-ops that now exist nationally have enrolled about 300,000 people in health plans by combining low premiums with a certain homespun appeal[….]

    but nope:

    • Hol’ up! So she can take to Twitter and complain about PBO not doing an interview with “real” Black journos, and accuse him of ignoring Black issues, but she can’t confront a white sitting U.S. congressman about him basically saying Black men in the inner city are a bunch of lazy niggers?

Louisiana Lawmakers Push For First-Ever Minimum Wage Hike

[….] The four bills set different targets and timelines for the wage hike. The most gradual would bring Louisiana’s wage floor up to $9 an hour in 2016, and the most aggressive would raise it to $10.10 an hour by the middle of next year. Currently, employers in the state are bound only by the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour because Louisiana does not have a minimum wage law of its own.[….]

Despite a trio of modest increases under President Bush, the federal minimum wage is worth less now than in 1968. If a $10.10 wage floor were adopted nationwide it would lift almost 5 million people out of poverty and reduce the strain on overtaxed federal safety net programs by tens of billions of dollars.[…]

School Spirit or Gang Signs? ‘Zero Tolerance’ Comes Under Fire

OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. — On the last Friday in January, 15-year-old Dontadrian Bruce was finishing up his biology project at Olive Branch High School. He and his group had constructed a double helix out of Legos, and his teacher asked them to pose for a picture with their project. Bruce smiled and held up three fingers—his thumb, forefinger, and middle finger, palm facing outward. The teacher snapped a photo on her phone and went onto the next group.

On Monday morning, Bruce was summoned out of first-period English by assistant principal Todd Nichols, who showed him the photo. “You’re suspended because you’re holding up gang signs in this picture,” said Nichols, according to Bruce.

Bruce explained that he was simply representing the number on his football jersey, “3,” and that all the kids did it in football practice. He also said he had no idea the gesture was known to signal affiliation with the Vice Lords, a Chicago-based gang with a strong presence in Memphis, Tenn., 20 miles north of Olive Branch.

“I was trying to tell my side, and it was like they didn’t even care,” said Bruce. When his mother, Janet Hightower, received a call from the school, she was shocked at the news. Her son had never been in trouble like that before, she said, and he made As and Bs.

Fake Websites Created by Republicans Spur Ethics Complaint

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington files complaint against Greg Walden.
    March 12, 2014

Just as the series of faux Democratic websites created by the Republicans was fading from the news, they are the subject of a new ethics complaint from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington.

The group said Wednesday that it had filed an ethics complaint against Rep. Greg Walden, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, for approving the sites.

The NRCC launched a series of websites last year that are designed, at first glance, to appear as if they belong to House Democratic candidates. Despite the smiling photos and official-looking logos, the text on the sites contains biting critiques of the Democrats—along with a large “Donate” button.

National Journal first reported in December that the sites may violate Federal Election Commission rules for confusing voters. The NRCC has since overhauled the donation page on the sites to make it clearer that money contributed goes to the Republicans, not a Democrat.

Fannie Mae Liquidation Seen Sparing Preferred Holders: Mortgages

[….] Senate banking committee leaders announced this week they plan to introduce a bill to dismantle the two mortgage companies.[….] The planned legislation, drafted with input from President Barack Obama’s administration, would replace Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac with a U.S.-backed mortgage-bond insurer that would cover losses only after private capital bears the first 10 percent, Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Johnson and Senator Mike Crapo said in a March 12 statement.[….]

Any wind down of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would have to address whether the companies’ values is split up among several stakeholders or left for taxpayers. The companies have sent the Treasury Department $203 billion since turning profitable in 2012. The government is still owed about $188 billion for its bailout funding, because federal regulators adopted a policy that payments to the government would not be counted as repaying the aid.[….]

The real story here is that PBO’s administration is going to shut these assholes down. That is HUGE.

  • I watched the Marc Lamont Hill vs. Gina McCauley video, and while Gina made good points, she really can’t talk about Marc when she’s made a internet career out of demeaning Black men, and painting them as oppressors of Black women. She even tried to come for FLOTUS during the primary campaign.

So both Gina and Marc need to have a Coke and a smile and STFU.

    • Miranda

I don’t think Gina is as much an advocate for black women as she is just a hater of black men. After her Obama comments back in 2007 and 2008 I seriously questioned her sanity.

Anger gets in the way of true discourse, leads to irrationality. That Cristelyn somebody seemed an apologist for white women. All in all, they all are not up to snuff, IMO. I will in time, review what I began watching last night (though I hate to give HuffPost any hits whatsoever). It is quite sad that black men and women are actually being used against one another. It is not a healthy climate right now. At my age, though, so glad I am out of the game- hot flashes and men don’t mix well..LOL!

    • Alma98

I don’t know who the comedian they is they were talking about.
But it sounds like he has some issues too.

      • Yeah, W. Kamau Bell as self-hate issues as well as Christelyn Karazin, one of the other panelists in this discussion. Her whole brand is devoted to “Black men ain’t shit, so Black women need to get themselves a white man”. And the other sista, Dr. Yaba Blay….I posted an article where she tried to romanticize the brutal treatment Patsey received from her enslaver. So, how can these sistas criticized Marc and W. Kamau? It’s like an alcoholic criticizing a drug addict.

        • Alma98

          mmmm….Thanks for the info Sepia.

        • Miranda

wait…wut? romanticize the relationship between Patsey and Epps?!?!? huh??

          • Yaba Blay, co-director of Africana studies
at Drexel University, says she was surprised that the object of sexual and emotional obsession by the brutal slave owner (portrayed by Michael Fassbender) in 12 Years a Slave happened to be depicted by a darker actress. “I think in the American context, the way we talk about enslavement and rape, the image many of us get is, it was always a lighter-skinned woman or a woman considered ‘exotic,’ and we connect that to quadroon balls or creole identity,” she says. “We get this image that who these European men were fascinated by were women who were somewhere in the middle [in terms of race and skin tone], exotic-looking women.”

But what is truly groundbreaking about 12 Years a Slave, according to Blay, is that clearly, the man who owns her is obsessed
with her in a way that does not simply denote power; he finds her beautiful. Blay, who is of Ghanaian ancestry, adds, “Without
generalizing, perhaps African men do have a grounding, in seeing thatthe potential for beauty still exists in African women.”

          • Miranda

Oh…..I didn’t read that before because the first time I saw this article, the title alone made me roll my eyes and click off the site.

    • TyrenM

Damn. I missed the coming for FLOTUS part.

      • And then after PBO won, Gina created a site devoted to FLOTUS. She knew where the money was.

    • qosine

      Good to know, Sepia.
So Gina’s into performative art, too for $$.

    • EpiphanySweet

Wha? She came for FLOTUS? I didnt know that. But imma be honest her series on Gnarlow Wilson and that women and son who were sexually assualted was ON point. That’s when I discovered her. So I missed the other things.

Big Ben could get covered in solar panels

[….] Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster are gonna get a little greener in the coming months. Specifically, Parliament is thinking about adding solar panels to the iconic clock’s face.[….] The idea came from one of Parliament’s passholders. The palace and clock need to boost energy efficiency by a third by 2020. According to Parliament, that could “save 22 power stations’ worth of electricity.”

The House is carrying out a number of other green measures this year, including installing voltage optimization technology to reduce energy wastage, exploring energy efficiency improvements for all buildings, and replacing lights with low energy LEDs. Some of the flat roofs on the Houses of Parliament will also get solar panels next year[….]

Obama Wants To Use Old War Budget To Fund Peacekeeping

[….] For the past decade, the Overseas Contingency Operations (OCO) budget has been synonymous with the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, providing the funding needed to carry out two very large-scale conflicts outside of the normal Pentagon budget. The same trick has been used to help shore up State Department funding in recent years, as deep budget cuts have slashed spending at Foggy Bottom.

Now, with the Iraq War ended and American combat troops scheduled to be out of Afghanistan at the end of this year, the Obama administration is looking to put the OCO budget to use in deploying peacekeepers to crises that tend to spring up without a regard for the budget season.[….] That funding would be in addition to the $2.5 billion that makes up the U.S.’s commitment to paying for U.N. peacekeeping missions, including the past due bills that were racked up in FY 2013 and 2014, and $235 million to help other regional bodies — like the African Union — provide security.[….]

This graphic shows how much money homophobia is costing Uganda

Since Uganda passed its harsh anti-gay law, the global community has struck back, cutting much-needed foreign aid.[….] Sweden recently became the fourth country to officially cut its assistance to Uganda. Along with Denmark, Norway, and the Netherlands, European nations have put the brakes on nearly $30 million in foreign aid. The biggest financial blow, however, came from the World Bank, which announced it would postpone a $90-million loan.[….]

While the United States has not officially cut any funding yet, Secretary of State John Kerry released a statement criticizing Uganda’s law and warning of further action. The EU, Canada, and the UK have released similar statements. Here’s a look at how much Uganda stands to lose as a result of its anti-gay law.[….]

Morning peeps. On my morning break at new job. It’s been almost 3 weeks since I started and I’m thinking this will be a good fit , especially once I completely move to city and I don’t have to go back to BR.

Bout the only thing is thus being a teaching hospital you see a lot of Medical residents running around an in the cafeteria. It’s a bit bittersweet for me because I like the job but seeing the young docs always make me a little melancholy thinking what might have been.

Holder calls for reduced sentences for low-level drug offenders
By Sari Horwitz, Thursday, March 13, 9:43 AM

Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. on Thursday called for reduced sentences for defendants in most of the nation’s drug cases, part of his effort to cut the burgeoning U.S. prison population and reserve stiff penalties for the most violent traffickers.

Holder’s proposal, which is expected to be approved by the independent agency that sets sentencing policies for federal judges, would affect 70 percent of drug offenders in the criminal justice system, according to figures provided by Justice Department officials. It would reduce sentences by an average of nearly a year.

How Amazon, PayPal and eBay are Financing Hate

Let’s say you’re in the market for a nice white-power hoodie or the
latest CD from the hatecore band Brutal Attack. Or perhaps you just want to give some money to your favorite white supremacist outfit. You’ll probably log onto a hate site, say the Holocaust-denying Barnes Review or the racist White Rabbit Radio, and head to their online shopping carts. And there you’ll more than likely find yourself being asked to use a PayPal account to move money to these organizations.

PayPal, a wholly owned subsidiary of eBay, serves as the main
financial tool for transferring money to American hate groups, and it earns fees on every transaction that vary in size according to a variety of factors. Research conducted by the Intelligence Report finds that at least 69 of the hate groups listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) rely on PayPal to help finance their activities. The irony is that PayPal bans such activity in its terms of service.

PayPal says that its policy “regarding payments for goods and services that may promote hate, violence, or intolerance” considers the following factors: 1) The promotion or glorification of hate, violence or intolerance because of a person’s race, religion, national origin, ethnicity, gender, disability, or sexual orientation; 2) any graphic portrayal of violence or victims of violence; and 3) previous activity associated with the account holder. It specifically bans the sale of “[i]tems containing Nazi, SS, or Ku Klux Klan symbols, including authentic German WWII memorabilia.”[….]

    From TOD:

    A Word from Don:

Yesterday Paul Ryan called every black male that I’ve ever known, lazy. Paul Ryan, a man that could have easily been the Vice President of the United States of American. The fact that he thought it was safe enough for him to utter such hurtful and demeaning language is a testament to the poisonous environment which President Obama must navigate on a daily basis.

How do I let what Paul Ryan said about me roll off of my back? How do I get over the fact that the fifty-million people that voted for him to be Vice President more than likely don’t have a problem with him saying what he said?

I remember a long time ago listening to Dick Gregory make the statement that the reason that black men used to walk around with boom boxes on their shoulders blasting music is so that they could drown out all the negative stereotypes that were said about them.

I work in a federal prison; I’m surrounded by people that are deemed too dangerous to live in society. I like my job, I like what I do for a living, I’m paid well and I’m grateful. But now I have an anger that I don’t know what to do with.

Back in my youth I would not have had this anger because I would not have let it get bottled up, I would have released it somehow or someway. But now that I’m older and wiser it gets harder and harder to deal with the disrespect that gets directed at black men like me

In narrow vote, Senate backs ending early voting on weekends
By Patrick Marley of the Journal Sentinel March 13, 2014

Madison — After being blocked by Democrats a day earlier, Republican state senators narrowly approved bills Wednesday to end weekend voting before elections, allow lobbyists to make political donations earlier in the political season and curb lawsuits by those exposed to asbestos.

Under one bill, approved by a one-vote margin, early voting in clerks’ offices could occur only on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. Clerks would not be able to hold early voting during all of that period, however, because they would be limited to allowing a total of 45 hours of early voting a week.

Democrats told Republicans they saw the move as an effort to suppress voting by their supporters.

“I feel like I’m in 1906, fighting the fights that people who came long before me had to fight,” said Sen. Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee), who is African-American. “I would argue it screams of backward-thinking mentality, all the way back to Jim Crow, and you should be ashamed.”

Republicans did not speak on the merits of the bill during Wednesday’s debate, but Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald (R-Juneau) told reporters after the vote that the measure would level the playing field for urban and rural areas because rural clerks don’t have the staff to keep the long hours that cities do.

    • Alma98

This is such bullshit! They deliberately chose working hours to keep black & brown folks from voting. They know poor whites are gonna vote against their own interest so they came for us. And they did it all right before the spring election in April. They ain’t fooling nobody. It just means local politicians better work hard to get out the vote instead of begging me for money 24/7.
The ACLU got in on this too late in the game. They all of a sudden show up out of nowhere begging for money and talking about voting rights. While we’ve been saying this for a couple of years now. Where the fuck where they 2yrs ago. And any of these local folks lose there seats they got no one to blame but themselves. They always wait til the last damn minute to talk to poc. When they lose they’ll blame it on Milwaukee like they always do. A lot of people here are still struggling to stay above water. They’re working themselves to death for pennies both of my sisters works 2 jobs to keep afloat. Stop waiting til the last minute dammit!

      • goldenstar

Alma, does WI have vote by mail or absentee voting? No matter what, gotta organize folks to vote every which way.

        • Alma98

Yes we do goldenstar but they’re coming after those too. They’re trying to insure folks don’t vote at all. How you can put limits on mail in voting is beyond me. They tried to close our post offices awhile back and we fought back. So now they’re looking for other ways to disenfranchise us. These people are scum.

          • jziglar

The best way to stop this immediately is by getting rid of Scott Walker this year. Right now the race is tied against a candidate who is not well known. If they re-elect this guy then Wisconsin will get what they deserve.

Don’t toss it, fix it—with Pop-up Repair shop

[….] I didn’t realize that people threw perfectly good things away for
lack of a switch or a need of a new plug (or sometimes just a spray of WD-40) until I was in college, and saw perfectly good stuff trashed because it was ‘broken.’Now I understand that being a fixer makes me a minority in today’s American population. But the recession and consciousness about the incredible volume of stuff than American throw away has brought attention back to the old-fashioned idea of fixing things.

Enter Pop-Up Repair, which takes the pop-up concept (usually seen in association with disposable fashion brands) and extends it to repair. For the bulk of March, the duo behind the idea will be in Brookly, but during the rest of the spring, they’ll be travelling to Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia.

Any “college kids” who got jobs at Walmart probably lied about their education. This may not be true at every Walmart but I have heard too many personal accounts to feel otherwise.

          • Well, he did make it clear in his “clarification” today: rural people don’t work because there are no jobs, urban (blah) people don’t because there is no “culture of work”. See, that explains it. No dog whistles there. Just STFU douche canoe.

Right? He doesn’t even have to ever mow his own lawn. Part of the upkeep! Meanwhile, I don’t see that same largesse going to an acquaintance who lives in the Charles Drew House.

Democrats Prove That GOP Vulnerable In Florida Special Election

[….] They are claiming that this special election indicates a strong upper hand for the GOP. The reality could be nothing further from the truth. The amount of money spent on a district which is up for election again in a few months is staggering, over $9 million in outside advertising, mainly helping the Republican candidate. Add to it the millions spent by the candidates themselves (again, with David Jolly being the bigger spender), this is an incredibly expensive race. Yet, despite being a safe seat, and having outspent his opponent, David Jolly only barely squeaked out a victory with 2% of the votes.

The key here is that despite spending less, the Democrats kept the
Republicans fighting in this district, and nearly carried it. They turned a safe district into a competitive one. And there are signs that the Democratic Party is planning on doing the same with dozens of other races nationwide, and have selected other ‘safe’ districts to target. They will not win all of them, but by doing the fight, they are forcing the GOP to fight where they had previously felt safe. It is a strategy designed to hurt them in the pocketbooks.[….]

You’re a mess, cultist! Sodexo is a big government cafeteria contractor. I don’t know if that includes the House and Senate buildings but I’d be amused if it did and quietly moved into that realm!

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Students at the University of Alabama Honors College here are encouraged to do volunteer work in the community and on campus.

For Marlan Golden, a senior, that has included being a Big Brother; running an education project for local Latinos; serving as president of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity; and, most recently, signing up people for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

Mr. Golden is one of about 600 student volunteers from a dozen colleges around Alabama who have been trained to help enroll people for insurance under President Obama’s signature law. They have canvassed churches, job fairs, barber shops in black neighborhoods, libraries — wherever people unlikely to have health care gather.

The all-volunteer organization, known as Bama Covered, is believed to be the only group doing enrollment that is made up solely of college students. The effort has the feel of student activism from an earlier time, like the push to register blacks to vote during the civil-rights era. By the end of February, Alabama reached 84 percent of its projected enrollment goal, ahead of the national figure of 75 percent.

    • qosine

Oh, I love his work w/”Bama Covered.” That’s my BF’s alma
mater, too. Go Marlan Golden! By Feb. 84% is impressive!

Senate Nearing Agreement on Jobless Benefits, Reid Says

In the mean time some people have been four months with no UI. How many are now living in basements or garages of relatives or friends? How many are homeless?

I hate these heartless goatfiggers! Even if folks get the extended UI back, I doubt the GOP scum will make the payments retroactive back to November. Even getting their UI back will not pull some out of the deep hole GOP dug for them.
