They can keep hanging onto that fraying rope until it drops them! I talked to at least 50 people over the last 2 days who now have health insurance or who saw their prior premiums drop significantly with better care.

People were also talking about the brand new regional county hospital breaking ground in the New year. This will mean a whole lot to the people in this rural area. It will be a Level One trauma unit which will save lives in that “Golden Hour” when critical immediate care is crucial.

Feliz Navidad & Feliz y Prospero Ano Nuevo, to Cochise County!

    Good morning POU.

American Express to Pay $75.7 Million for Unfair Marketing

The company must pay $59.5 million in restitution to more than 335,000 harmed customers, according to the deals announced
today by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. The biggest credit-card issuer by customer purchases violated the law when it misrepresented the costs and benefits of its add-on products, the agencies said.[….]

The agencies also assessed New York-based AmEx $16.2
million in penalties for misleading customers from 2000 to 2012
and billing them for services they never received, according to
the regulators’ orders. The deal also requires the company to
fix its practices, including its relationships with third-party

Regulators had penalized the company last year for other
violations related to credit-card add-on products in a deal that
totaled $112.5 million. In that settlement, the firm was accused
of deceiving customers who signed up for certain cards, leading
them to believe they would receive benefits they didn’t.[….]

Republicans And Democrats Agree, Deep-South Georgia Is Turning Blue

[….] Georgian politicians are holding their breath, waiting for the release of fund-raising figures at the end of the year. Republicans are anxious; Democrats are buoyant. Two candidates for office in 2014 come from prominent Democratic political families. Their names could boost the participation of voters and confirm the trend that both parties are seeing: Georgia is becoming a blue state.
The handwriting is on the wall because of simple facts. Georgia has the fastest growing black and Latino populations in the country.[….]

Carter and Nunn both represent themselves as ‘consensus-builders’ who will reach out to Republicans and independents. Because of these two candidates, the Georgia Democratic Party is optimistic about turning the state blue as early as 2014. Leaders are scrambling to organize for the change. The Republican Party agrees that Georgia is headed at least toward swing-state status — but not for another 5-7 years. The upcoming primary battle, which promises to push Georgia’s GOP even further to the right, may be a first shock to the party’s entrenched state of denial.[….]

Judge Deals A Blow To BP’s Efforts

    To Dodge Deepwater Horizon Payments

BP has sought to cut down on payments for the 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster by asking that local businesses prove the link between their economic losses and the oil spill. A federal judge halted BP’s effort to skip payments on Tuesday, ruling that BP cannot reverse its interpretation of the settlement simply because the cost is higher than what the oil giant once estimated.[….]

So far, $3.81 billion has been paid out to 40,000 spill claimants. BP estimates the class action settlements will cost at least $2 billion more than what it projected. Oil industry profits typically dwarf the cost of spill fines and settlements, even of this size. BP earned back $3.7 billion in profit in just one quarter, while it spent $3.3 billion on stock buybacks that enrich the largest shareholders.[….]

    Racism in Israel

Reports The Washington Post, “Between 2005 and 2012, African migrants came in a trickle, then a flood, pouring across Israel’s border with Egypt, with a peak of 17,258 in 2011.” The paper adds: The newly constructed “open facility” is designed to hold up to 3,300 illegal immigrants. It is not a prison, but not exactly a shelter, either. Residents will be required to answer roll call three times a day. They are not allowed to seek work. The facility is surrounded by a fence topped with spools of razor wire, and the migrants will be locked down at night.

Israeli Interior Minister Gideon Sa’ar bluntly links his concerns to the fear of losing the “Jewish” nature of Israel[….]Needless to say, Israel exists because millions of Jewish refugees, many of whom entered Israel illegally during and after the Holocaust and World War II, built it.[….]

It’s Israel that made the African migrants a problem. That’s what
incitement does. Since the border is closed and international
conventions bar their deportation, the state should allow those already here to work, to rebuild their lives, and offer them the prospect of becoming citizens through a gradual, careful process. That’s how it’s done in normal countries. Israel is too small, too weak to do this? Nonsense, merely too racist.

U.S. Postal Service Wins 6 Percent Increase to Cover Loss

[….] A first-class stamp will cost 49 cents, up from 46 cents, starting Jan. 26. Similar changes will apply to magazines, bills and advertising mail. The increases of 4.3 percent approved yesterday are on top of 1.7 percent, an amount equal to inflation, approved last month.

The Postal Regulatory Commission, in a 2-1 vote, rejected a Postal Service request to make the higher rates permanent, saying they will probably need to end in less than two years. The increase is designed to boost revenue by $1.8 billion a year to make up for losses during the economic downturn in 2008 and 2009, according to yesterday’s order.[…]

    • Aquagranny911

Here’s an LOL for you! I read that UPS & FedX are in deep caca because they failed to deliver about 6 million packages on time despite people paying extra for the service.

I would happily pay the increase in postage permanently. I totally support the US Postal service. They get the job done with no whining or excuse like the others who want to take over our postal system.

We were at my cousin’s house for the holiday & his rural postal carrier actually made a special trip out to deliver a package that somehow got overlooked. The dude was off duty & on his own way home but didn’t want this package to lie undelivered for two more days. This is our US Postal Service in action! Bless him! We invited him in to join the party!

      • vulcan_girl

        Hey, Aquagranny!

I had two packages delivered by USPS on separate days and they were on my porch by 8 am each day, after it had snowed the night before! I was like ‘Who was on my porch!?’

        • Aquagranny911

Black Santa, lol! Our postal service is great & I am so sick of the goatfigger efforts to shut them down so FedX & UPS can take over.

My experience with the US postal service, especially when I have lived in rural areas has been stellar. The carriers usually know all the people on their routes & often go out of their way like my cousin’s carrier did on Christmas eve to make sure a package or mail gets delivered on time.

I will seriously question why a package that needs to go from AZ to CO needs to first be sent to Louisville, Kentucky before transport to it’s destination by UPS. Where, I will add, it gets snowed in for two days & gets finally delivered 5 days after Christmas!

Forget getting a refund from UPS because the weather in KT was “an act of God” for which they are not responsible even though you paid extra to make sure of Christmas delivery. UPS can bite the big cactus! I won’t use them!

    • rikyrah

I will remind people again that the USPS would not need this increase if the GOP had not deliberately set out to destroy the USPS with their ridiculous mandatory Pension/Medical payments that they are FORCED TO MAKE.

You have never known in your life for the GOP to give two shyts about a working man’s pension fund stability..

and all of a sudden, they’re worried about the workers of the USPS?

They did this to destroy the USPS, so that they privatize it.

And the stupid muthafuckas from rural areas of this country don’t understand that once it’s private, good luck for them getting anything delivered to them without the price being doubled. But, they continue to vote GOP.

      • Aquagranny911

        Totally Nailed that!!!

      • conlakappa

It is that and just general bad management. Who negotiated the deal with Armstrong and other Olympics sponsorship? The USPS tried to run with the big dogs but there isn’t a lot of room for that when an entity is beholden to the feds.

    • jds09

Talked to my little brother the mail carrier this morning, he had some schadenfreude around that fact that Amazon and UPS apparently had some major malfunctions yesterday. A lot of folks will get their Christmas gifts late, despite advertised promises of Tuesday night delivery.

      • Aquagranny911

I Laughed really big when I read that! Tell you little brother that I salute him & the US Postal Service for their untiring & stellar work!

FCC Proposes $3.56M Fine Against Consumer Telecom Inc., for Deceptive Slamming, Cramming, and Billing Practices

[….]Numerous consumers complained that CTI’s telemarketers had tricked them into believing that the telemarketers were calling on behalf of the consumers’ existing long distance providers. The
consumers were then shocked to learn that CTI had switched their preferred long distance carrier and billed them for charges they had not authorized.

In many cases, CTI apparently took advantage of consumers by masking the true purpose of the call and then profiting from their
obvious confusion about the questions they were asked. Many of the deceived consumers were elderly, hearing impaired, or infirm.[….]

US team makes oil from algae – fast

US scientists believe they may have cracked one of the great biofuel conundrums. They have turned a thick soup of algae into a mix of crude oil, gas, water and plant nutrients in less than an hour. That is, they have taken 60 minutes to do what Nature does – at great pressures and temperatures – over millions of years.[….] The leftovers are clean water, a mix of fuel gases and nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium that can be used to nourish more algae.

That the team can also recover something that could be turned into
natural gas, and therefore energy, is one bonus. Another is that they can get back water and nutrients to sustain the process.
The big engineering challenge, however, will be to scale up the
system to something that could ever compete commercially with the stuff that gushes from an oil well.[….]

TROLLOLOL: News Websites Employ Moderators To Curb Nasty
BARBARA ORTUTAY – DECEMBER 26, 2013, 11:07 AM ESTNEW YORK (AP) — Mix blatant bigotry with poor spelling. Add a dash of ALL CAPS. Top it off with a violent threat. And there you have it: A recipe for the worst of online comments, scourge of the Internet.

Blame anonymity, blame politicians, blame human nature. But a growing number of websites are reining in the Wild West of online commentary. Companies including Google and the Huffington Post are trying everything from deploying moderators to forcing people to use their real names in order to restore civil discourse. Some sites, such as Popular Science, are banning comments altogether.

The efforts put sites in a delicate position. User comments add a lively, fresh feel to videos, stories and music. And, of course, the longer visitors stay to read the posts, and the more they come back, the more a site can charge for advertising.

What websites don’t want is the kind of off-putting nastiness that spewed forth under a recent CNN.com article about the Affordable Care Act.more here: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/trollolol-news-websites-employ-moderators-to-curb-nasty-comments

Bill would give Port Authority inspector general subpoena power outside the agency

    By Steve Strunsky/The Star-Ledger
    December 24, 2013 at 10:20 AM

In the wake of the George Washington Bridge lane closure scandal, a Democratic lawmaker said he will introduce a bill to give the Port Authority Inspector General’s office subpoena power over documents or witnesses from outside the agency.

The Inspector General’s office of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is conducting one of several investigations into the unannounced closing of two out of three local access lanes to the bridge from Fort Lee. The closings clogged borough streets and prompted the start of legislative hearings followed by the resignation of two top officials named to the agency by Gov. Chris Christie.more here: http://www.nj.com/politics/index.ssf/2013/12/bill_subpoena_gwb_inspector_general.html

Daughter reunited with family in St. Louis after nearly a decade
    December 24, 2013 8:05 am
    By Doug Moore • dmoore@post-dispatch.com

The Kabashi family is a happy, rowdy bunch. With seven children, quiet moments are few here in their split-level house.

Doors slam. The television blares. Roughhousing is a constant among the young children.

The chaos is just as patriarch Munawar Kabashi wants it.

“All my kids are here. They are safe. They are doing well,” Kabashi said as he sits on the couch in his living room.

Nine years after a heart-wrenching decision 7,000 miles from St. Louis, Munawar is finally able to say that.

For years, he had assumed his oldest child, Mona, now 14, was dead. And she thought her family had been killed — both reasonable assumptions at the time.

There’s a story making the rounds on the gossip sites about Evelyn Lozada getting engaged to another baller. What’s bothering me is that I’m reading people talking about the fruitlessness of getting educated, working, building character, because “hoes be winning.” That’s disheartening—the media focuses on the material (Evelyn is a beautiful woman whose engagement ring is gorgeous and expensive), but to me, I just see a woman making the same mistake which landed her into trouble: getting involved with a baller who already has baby mama drama and a known propensity for cheating. If she’s really changed (which I don’t know…), she deserves much better.

    • rikyrah

I feel ya, gn. But, folks don’t get that guys like that only want a certain ‘ type’, and if you’ve got yourself together, you are automatically not his ‘type’.

As for Evelyn, she hasn’t learned anything.

      • gn

Srsly, the guy has a five month old baby, and Evelyn’s six months pregnant. He’s fighting with the other baby’s mother and I don’t see how Evelyn trusts that those two aren’t still involved. It’s her life, but that’s not a great example for other people to follow.

  • rikyrah

    this is just nasty.

Did Rebekah Brooks Fuck Rupert Murdoch and His Son Lachlan?

The long-awaited criminal trial of former News of the World editors
Rebekah Brooks and Andy Coulson, who face conspiracy charges related to hacking the phones of murder victims and celebrities alike, is slated for this September. According to a rumor spreading around News Corp, things could get salacious.

Sources tell Gawker that during the discovery process, emails were
unearthed suggesting that Brooks had, at various times, had sex with Coulson, her boss Rupert Murdoch, and Lachlan Murdoch, Rupert’s son and the likely successor to his empire. A new twist on honor thy father.

In one of the emails, Brooks purportedly discussed the size of
Coulson’s penis. It’s not clear if her estimation of his member was
    favorable or not.

In response to questions from Gawker, Steve Rubinstein, a
spokesperson for the Murdoch family, said unequivocally, “There is no truth to these rumors.” The lawyers representing Brooks and Coulson did not respond to requests for comment sent yesterday.

Whether the rumor is true or not, it is definitely circulating widely
at high levels in the company. Three sources shared the claim of a
sexual relationship between Brooks and Rupert Murdoch with Gawker; all three said they had learned the information through lawyers involved in the case. Two of those three sources are high-ranking executives at News Corp. The latter two sources had also both been told of a relationship between Lachlan and Brooks.

    One Today

If you’re looking for a simple, interesting way to increase the amount you’re giving to charity, <a href="http://www.google.com/onetoday/take a look at One Today. It’s a smartphone app that reminds you with a message about a single charity every day. When you get the message, at a time you pick, you can choose whether to give a buck to that charity. If the charity inspires you, you can add to your donation to match the donations of others. If others have been inspired, your donation will be matched. Google curates the charities that are presented, and from what I’ve seen they do a pretty good job.

You need a Google Wallet account to use it, which basically means you need to link a credit card to your Google account. This may seem like an inconvenience (it is), but the use of Google Wallet allows Google to charge you every couple of weeks when your giving total approaches $20, instead of every day for your $1 donation, keeping the transaction costs down.

I like the “just a buck a day” concept, and I’ve been giving more fairly painlessly using this app. Maybe a few of you will like it, too.

Feds charge man in Texas over alleged “knockout” assault
By CNN Staff updated 11:54 AM EST, Thu December 26, 2013

(CNN) — A man has been charged with a federal hate crime in connection with what authorities say was a racially motivated “knockout” assault against an elderly black man, the U.S. Justice Department said Thursday.

Conrad Alvin Barrett, 27, of Katy, Texas, has been charged with one count of violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

According to the complaint, Barrett in November attacked the elderly man because of the man’s race and color in what Barrett called a “knockout.”

The “knockout game” is an assault in which an assailant aims to knock out an unsuspecting victim with one punch. http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/26/justice/texas-knockout-charge/index.html

The media’s attempts at destroying the ACA through willfull misinformation will not work like they think it will Nov 2014.
Obamacare, Hated Today, Will Soon Get Boost
By Christopher Flavelle Dec 24, 2013 11:31 AM ET

Obamacare may not be popular now, but that may well change.

A CNN poll shows that support for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act has fallen to a new low, with just 35 percent of respondents saying they approve of the law. Look a little deeper, and the poll suggests the public’s views on Obamacare will turn around once the coverage starts to take effect next month.

First, 15 percent of respondents oppose the law because it doesn’t go far enough. So that leaves 43 percent who think the law is too liberal. But even among that group, there’s reason to think some of their opposition is based on not quite understanding how the law will work or who it will affect.

A good example is the widespread concern that people won’t be able to keep their current doctors. Thirty-five percent of respondents said they thought they would be cut off from the doctors they now see. That isn’t surprising, given recent news stories about exchange plans that will seek to lower costs by providing access to fewer doctors and hospitals than traditional employer-sponsored insurance plans.

But those new networks will cover far fewer than 35 percent of Americans. The Congressional Budget Office estimated that 7 million Americans would be covered by exchange-based plans next year, and as we now know, the actual figure may be much smaller. For most other Americans — those covered by employer plans, or Medicare, or Medicaid, or Tricare — there’s unlikely to be a similar shift to narrow-network coverage, at least not yet.more here: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-12-24/obamacare-hated-today-will-soon-get-boost.html

Meals on Wheels adds pets as clients

After Meals on Wheels volunteers noticed a growing number of clients giving their food away to their furry friends, they started working with shelters and other pet groups to add free pet food to their meal deliveries. Those programs, relying on donations and volunteers, have continued to grow in popularity as seniors began eating better, staying healthier and worrying less about feeding their pets, one group said.[…]

Partner pet groups will solicit, pick up, pack and get the animal chow to Meals on Wheels or another agency that donates food, volunteers said. Agencies also take pet food to nursing homes, senior centers or community centers. Those who qualify for Meals on Wheels or similar programs are almost always eligible for a free pet food program.

    Good morning, Fam!

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful holiday. I did… and I have some takeaways from mine.

    1. The time has come where I. will either cook or clean — but not both. I did both and my back and knees were sore all yesterday. Added to this is the fact that I started the day with less than five hours sleep. I am currently in bed and see no reason to change my location/position for another couple of hours.

    2. I have a second interview tomorrow and it is doubly important that I recover so I don’t walk in there moving like somebody’s 175 year old relative.

    3. I will no longer make 70-11 desserts. Inevitably, there’s waste. I will make a couple for the holiday and during this time of year, I will bake for New Year’s a couple of days before.

    4. Imma do a WHOLE lot more drankin. I had two Bailey’s and coffee for breakfast after I finished a series of tasks. Did it help? Don’t know. Didn’t hurt, so Imma run with that.

Hola, AG! Thanks for the vote of confidence! Your nephew’s nogsmog sounded delicious!

The only reason I do this is for my parents, who are staying with me while my brother rehabs their house (it will be done within the next 7-10 days), and my youngest nephews. If I could talk my parents into it, I would take them to dinner every holiday!

        • Aquagranny911

One of the prime benefits of becoming an elder for me is that the young ones in our familia have been taking over a lot more of the holiday cooking & so forth. I really appreciate that! Plus we do rotate hosting for Christmas & other holidays throughout the Fam.

That really helps when we have as large a group as ours in & out over several days. This year the cousins really stepped up for both Thanksgiving & Christmas. A great time was had by all!

    Wireless car charging is coming

Imagine driving your car into the garage, and having it instantly start “refueling,” without your having to do a thing. Now consider the possibility of, instead of plugging in your smart phone to recharge it,
simply dropping it on a pad and have the process start. That’s the
promise of wireless charging, which is finally getting commercialized.
WiTricity has also worked with Apple, so maybe that will result in some cool charging applications for the company’s devices.

According to Giler, who points to an account in Charged magazine,
Toyota will begin working on installing WiTricity wireless charging into its cars next year. WiTricity’s approach is different from standard inductive charging—magnetic resonance, Giler explained. It’s biggest advantage is not needing precise alignment between the transmitter on the ground and the receiver on the car. That’s a big advantage for carmakers, who have been exploring various electronic aids to ensure that fallible drivers can line up closely with the pads.[….]
