Learning a lot from this series. The deportation of Africans starting 75 years to the day of the Evian Conference? Makes you wonder if that was that intentional or coincidence.

    • Speaking of the Evian Conference, I wonder if its failure is part of the reason why the U.S. government is in lockstep with Israel. Has Israel been holding the conference over the U.S.’s head all these years?

Don’t you love the way this journalist tries to frame this man calling children “coonass” as just maybe…possibly…depends…could be…a sometimey slur? Yeah….because you know, “coonass” in the right context, is a term of endearment! Sure……..that’s it.
Texas legislator uses sometimes-slur for Cajun in discussion of ‘Katrina children’
    By Julia O’Donoghue, | The Times-Picayune
    July 30, 2014 at 7:26 PM

A Texas state legislator used the term “coonass” — a word for Cajun that some consider offensive — when talking about Louisiana students who had to attended school in the Lone Star state following Hurricane Katrina.

Texas state Rep. Dennis Bonnen made the comment during a state government hearing, while comparing the cost of educating children from Louisiana after Hurricane Katrina to the cost of educating children from Central America arriving on the United States border.

“I want to be clear — a Katrina child is far different. We can make jokes and pick on Louisiana and it’s fun and all that, but it’s a hell of a lot different bringing a kid over from Louisiana than a child who’s just made a treacherous journey,” said Bonnen initially, according to a video from Progress Texas, a left-leaning organization.

A few seconds later, Bonnen — who is a member of the Texas House political leadership — went on to say: “There’s a significant difference. We had to have a teacher who could do coonass in English, but here we have to do Spanish and English, maybe, and there’s a higher marker.”

Prominent Conservative Pundit Tells John Legend To ‘Shut Up And Play The Piano’

John Podhoretz, a former speech writer for Ronald Reagan with a regular column in the New York Post, told musician John Legend to “shut up and play the piano” in a tweet sent on Wednesday afternoon. Podhoretz was prompted by a tweet that Legend sent criticizing Israel’s treatment of Secretary of State John Kerry.

    • And if he doesn’t what are you going to do about it?………….That’s what I thought.

    • Miranda

Rather than apologize or address the controversy, Podhoretz apparently deleted his Twitter account. He was an extremely active user of the Twitter, sending almost 70,000 tweets and attracting over 34,000 followers.

HAHAHA…yeah, he has 34,000 followers….but John Legend has 5.6 million…and JL’s followers promptly chewed Pdhoretz’s ass up and spit it out. HAHA!

Wow…… a benign resolution to honor the Pope is an issue because he “sounds” too much like Obama? Damn GOP…just damn.
A popular piece of legislation that seeks to honor Pope Francis is stuck in Congress.

With time running out on the Capitol Hill calendar, the lawmakers who crafted the bipartisan measure are getting impatient with Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio).

The resolution, written by Reps. John Larson (D-Conn.) and Pete King (R-N.Y.), congratulates Francis on his March 2013 election and recognizes “his inspirational statements and actions.”

The seemingly innocuous resolution was referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee, which hasn’t acted on it. The panel didn’t comment for this article.

The inaction and the lack of a white smoke signal from Boehner have sparked speculation that politics is at play.

Only 19 of the 221 co-sponsors are Republicans. The dearth of GOP members on the measure could be attributable to assertions that the pope is “too liberal,” according to a Republican backer of the legislation.

The source noted that Francis last year denounced “trickle-down economics.”

Some Republicans believe the pope is “sounding like [President] Obama. [The pope] talks about equality — he actually used the term ‘trickle-down economics,’ which is politically charged,” the GOP official said.

What Debate? Economists Agree the Stimulus Lifted the Economy
    by Justin Wolfers 7 30 2014

Here’s a simple case study making the point that our political debates about economics have become largely unhinged from those among actual economists. Take the Obama stimulus plan, known as the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. If you took your cues from the political rhetoric in Washington — or even from the occasional virulent debate in the economics blogosphere — you would think the whole question of fiscal stimulus is highly contested.

But it’s not. There’s widespread agreement among economists that the stimulus act has helped boost the economy.

Lucio files bill to require pre-abortion adoption course
    BY KOLTEN PARKER : JULY 30, 2013

AUSTIN — The lone Senate Democrat to vote in favor of recent sweeping abortion restrictions filed a bill Tuesday that would require a woman complete a three-hour course on adoption before legally obtaining an abortion in Texas.

State Sen. Eddie Lucio, D-Brownsville, filed Senate Bill 42, which would charge the state’s Health and Human Services Commission to develop an “adoption education course” that women would take for free, in person or online, and present a certificate of completion to her doctor to be cleared for an abortion.

    – – —The number of people who applied for U.S. unemployment benefits rose by 23,000 last week to 302,000, one week after falling to a 14-year low. Still, the level of initial claims remains near a postrecession bottom and continue to signal further improvement in the labor market. Economists polled by MarketWatch expected claims to total a seasonally adjusted 308,000 in the week ended July 26. The average of new claims over the past month, meanwhile, fell by 3,500 to 297,250, the Labor Department said. It’s the first time the monthly average has fallen below the 300,000 mark since April 2006 and reflects an eight-year low. The four-week figure smooths out the jumpiness in the weekly report and offers a better look at underlying trends in the labor market.

The Wealth Gap Across Race, Gender and Marriage Status
    ByJosh Marshall
    Published July 31, 2014, 12:00 AM EDT

Here is a chart that not only shows the staggering wealth gap across the divides of race, gender and marriage status. It also maps many of the key dynamics and fault lines driving contemporary American politics.

The chart illustrates a pattern that most of us probably do not find surprising. But the sheer chasm separating single white men from Black and Hispanic single women is still shocking to see visualized so clearly. Single white men have 438 times the assets as single Black women and 365 times that of single Hispanic women. As we can see, marriage is a huge determinant of wealth – but mainly if you’re not white, and especially if you’re a woman.

Note that the chart provides data for wealth with and without vehicles (in most cases, cars). Here I’ve referenced the latter statistic. As the report notes, owning a car is an important way to access more employment opportunities among other things. But that wealth is not easily accessible in dollar terms, which is highly relevant for the following reason. Great disparities of wealth not only have a huge impact on life opportunities and the prospects for wealth accumulation. They are hugely important factor in the precariousness of economic life experienced by different demographic groups.

At essentially zero net wealth, individuals are one job less, illness or major expense away from debt (often incurred at usurious rates) or even homelessness.

    • Town

This is what the know nothing Democrats (esp. the CBC) should be talking about. This is what they should be shanking lil punks like Paul Ryan on:

Where I live, you NEED a car to get around. If you don’t have a car, you are out of luck b/c the public transportation is shotty because the white folks don’t want the blahs coming up in their side of town, even though their side of town is where the jobs are. Depending on what road I take, it takes between 18 and 27 miles to get from my house to work. Luckily I have a car because if I didn’t, I’d be out of luck. If I didn’t have a car and had to walk to work within a 3 mile radius, I’d be limited to the grocery store, some service stations, a couple of 7-11s and some food places like Quiznos. Maybe Walmart and/or Target. How would those jobs pay enough for me to get a car to get around? Even a decent used car is several thousand dollars. The cheapest little small cars is over $12K new so how do they expect Sheniqkwa in the projects to be able to get a car, even used?

But Paul Ryan says those people over there in the inner city are lazy and don’t want to work? How about creating some jobs over in the inner city and giving them transportation to get to work? How about that? But it’s easier to claim black people are lazy and need to sign morality contracts for their welfare benefits than to actually fix the problem.

      • Alma98

Tell it Town!!! My brother used to work in a burb here.
Every time he went to work and left from work the police stopped him for one bogus reason or another. They even took him to the station once trying to scare him.

Eventually he found a job in the city and quit. Whenever we pass the Man Power building there are lines out the door with people looking for work. Maybe Paul Ryan should take his trifling ass over there and talk to people. He really pisses me off because the man has never had a real fucking job.

      • Miranda

I’ve signed more than my fair share of petitions to keep the MARTA system here from eliminating routes. The public transportation here is completely inept for the population all because the surrounding suburbs refuse to contribute and let the system expand into their areas. Its disgraceful.

That’s why I felt no empathy for the folks that were forced to sleep in their freezing cars all night when that freak ice storm happened and shut down the interstates. The streets within the city limits of Atlanta were clear, it was all those little cities and suburbs of the metro area that were completely effed up. It was their own doing all because they want to keep the black and brown folks from their precious gated communities.

NYT: U.S. Attorney Tells Cuomo To Back Off Witnesses In Ethics Probe

    ByDylan ScottPublishedJuly 31, 2014, 10:30 AM EDT 736 views

The U.S. attorney investigating New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s decision to shutter an anti-corruption commission earlier this year has warned the governor against tampering with witnesses or otherwise obstructing the inquiry, the New York Times reported Thursday.

Preet Bharara, the U.S. attorney in Manhattan, sent the warning in a letter to Cuomo’s office Wednesday. The letter appears to have been prompted by Cuomo’s office reaching out to members of the commission to ask them to make public statements defending its work, according to the Times.

“To the extent anyone attempts to influence or tamper with a witness’s recollection of events relevant to our investigation, including the recollection of a commissioner or one of the commission’s employees, we request that you advise our office immediately, as we must consider whether such actions constitute obstruction of justice or tampering with witnesses that violate federal law,” Bharara’s office wrote in the letter.

The Times revealed last week that Cuomo’s office stymied the commission’s investigations into some of the governor’s political associates. Cuomo also closed the commission eight months ahead of schedule, after the New York General Assembly passed a legislative package that many watchdog groups considered insufficient.

Bharara has since picked up some of the investigations that the commission left unfinished and launched an inquiry into why Cuomo shut it down.

NFL player’s daughter battling stage 4 cancer; shaves head in solidarity
    July 28, 2014

Devon Still turned 25 years old July 11. The former Big Ten defensive player of the year enters his third season in the NFL with the Bengals in the midst of his prime. An opportunity sits wide open to compete for snaps in the middle of one of the league’s best defensive lines.

However, two months ago, Still was convinced he was going to give it up.

On June 2, the Wilmington native and Howard High graduate found out his vibrant 4-year-old daughter, Leah, has stage 4 cancer. The disease, nueroblastoma, leaves her with a slightly better than 50 percent chance of survival.

His family, his career, his perspective, his world flipped upside down in an instant. Football suddenly faded as a priority.

    – —-Op-ed by First Lady Michelle Obama on McClatchy: Let’s end veteran homelessness once and for all

    — —Let’s end veteran homelessness once and for all<

At the beginning of June, 85 mayors, governors and county officials
from across the country – and across the political spectrum – signed on to the Mayors Challenge to End Veterans Homelessness. Today, we’re announcing that in the two months since then, 97 more state and local leaders have signed on – meaning that a total of 182 local leaders have pledged to end homelessness among the veterans in their communities by the end of 2015.

I know that might sound like a pipe dream. After all, veteran
homelessness is a problem we’ve faced for decades – in fact, almost 90 percent of all homeless veterans served prior to 9/11. And as a country, we’ve never been able to rally the resources and the public will to get all of our veterans off the streets and into stable housing.

So why do all these state and local leaders believe that things are
any different today? The answer to that question is simple: because
today – thanks to federal, state and local leadership and the
determined, daily work of advocates on the ground – we’re finally seeing that ending veteran homelessness is not just something we should strive to achieve – it’s something we actually can.

One dead, one critical after Chicago Loop shooting

Chicago Police and first responders on the scene of a shooting at 231 S. LaSalle on Thursday morning. | Brian Jackson / Sun-Times

A recently demoted worker entered a Loop office building Thursday morning and shot the company’s CEO before turning the gun on himself and committing suicide, authorities said.
The shooting happened just before 10 a.m. at the ArrowStream company on the 17th floor of the Bank of America building, 231 S. LaSalle St.
“Apparently he was despondent over the fact that he got demoted,” Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy said.
The company’s CEO, Steven LaVoie, 54, was in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, authorities said.
The alleged shooter was identified as Anthony DeFrances, a 59-year-old employee who had been told on Friday that was being demoted as the company downsizes, police said.
The firm sells supply-chain management technology.
That block of LaSalle was closed to traffic as police officers flooded the scene.

    • So was shooting the CEO supposed to reverse the demotion? I wish these idiots would start on themselves first.

Look at her hair, she still has the same 1984 long cheerleader hair with the swoop bang, even though it is 2014 and she should’ve BEEN cut her ends. She’s dumpy & frumpy.

He couldn’t give a full throttle rebuke of Israel, but its a start.

End the Gaza blockade to achieve peace
    By Keith Ellison July 29

Ellison, a Democrat, represents Minnesota’s 5th District in the House of Representatives.

It seems as though each day brings new horrors and heartbreaks in the Holy Land. More than 1,000 dead. Gazan children blown up on the beach.A U.N. shelter hit. Two-thirds of Israelis living in fear from indiscriminate rocket fire launched by Hamas. But as the calls for a cease-fire gain momentum, it is important to understand that many Gazans who have no association with Hamas view the return to the way things were as unacceptable.

These people aren’t rocket shooters or combatants. For the past several years they have lived in dreadful isolation. The status quo for ordinary Gazans is a continuation of no jobs and no freedom. This is not an attractive future. Gazans want and deserve the dignity of economic opportunity and freedom to move. This can be accomplished only with an end to the blockade of the Gaza Strip, which must be considered within the framework of a cease-fire. Israelis likewise deserve to live free of rocket fire and terror attacks. In order for Israelis to live safely and securely in their homes, Hamas must give up its rockets and other weapons.

I have traveled to Gaza three times since 2009 and have visited hospitals and schools there. As I have talked with ordinary Gazans, I have not encountered anyone representing Hamas. During one visit, I had the opportunity to meet Scott Anderson, deputy director of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA). Anderson, a 21-year veteran of the U.S. Army, said it best when I spoke to him again this week: “Unless there is material change to the status quo, you’re just resetting the clock for another cycle of violence.” Continuing to block goods and services to and from Gaza keeps the keys to opportunity away from the people who just want to live, work and travel.

Ok. I am seriously starting my search for a hotel in Hawaii. I plan to wither reserve the room or pay outright booking in 2 weeks.

So in that time I need to find a good place for the trip. I will be there from Nov 3rd to Nov 10th. So that’s 6 days 7 nights.

So anybody who’s been or know someone who’s been please hit me up with suggestions.

The next phase of planning will be for activities to do while I’m there. But right now it’s all about the hotels.

Leaked Memo: Top Tea Party Group Says It Forced Mitch McConnell To Oppose the Stimulus

FreedomWorks’ president writes that the GOP senator’s “uwillingness to lead” forced his group to “shut down every phone line in the Leader’s offices.”
By Andy Kroll Thu Jul. 31, 2014 6:00 AM EDT

As he seeks another six years in office, Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has touted his reputation as a true conservative and an unwavering opponent of President Barack Obama. But a newly leaked document written by one of the most prominent figures in the tea party movement claims that McConnell wasn’t a strong conservative leader initially when Obama proposed his anti-recession stimulus package—and that McConnell only ended up opposing this signature Obama initiative because a leading tea party group leaned on him to do so.

Mother Jones recently obtained a trove of emails, memos, financial records, and fundraising documents written by officials and financial backers of FreedomWorks, a national tea party group. These records contain a May 2009 memo written by FreedomWorks president and CEO Matt Kibbe and addressed to the group’s board of directors. The memo presented FreedomWorks’ efforts to combat the Obama administration, just as the new president was settling in and responding to the economic crisis under way. In the document, Kibbe credited FreedomWorks—which has been funded by corporations, wealthy individuals, and grassroots donors—for “fomenting the tea party movement.”

The memo noted that FreedomWorks was doing all it could to battle Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package, which was intended to jump-start the US economy. But Kibbe reported in his memo that not all Republican leaders in Congress were willing to block the stimulus bill. Mitch McConnell was apparently one of those wavering Republicans. Here’s what Kibbe’s memo said:

  • Alums of Ohio black college fight for its survival
    Associated Press

CINCINNATI — Alumni of the country’s oldest historically black private university are committing money and other support to help their alma mater’s fight for survival amid the risk of accreditation loss and financial deficits and low enrollment.

The alumni association of southwestern Ohio’s Wilberforce University, founded in 1856, says graduates have committed to raise $2 million in cash donations, including $400,000 pledged at last weekend’s alumni conference. The university has already received $200,000 of that, alumni and university officials said Wednesday. The university also says it has a strategy for upcoming changes, including realigning Wilberforce’s board, modifying facilities and academics, revising financial procedures and finding a president to move the school forward.

Talbert Grooms, president of Wilberforce’s alumni association, said in a statement that alumni believe change is a “critical part of staying relevant.”

Last month, the Higher Learning Commission issued a “show-cause”
order, which stressed serious financial issues, lack of leadership and a
deteriorating campus among other problems at the school. It requires
Wilberforce to show why the commission shouldn’t withdraw its

House GOP Abandons Border Crisis Bill Amid Conservative Opposition
    SAHIL KAPURPublishedJULY 31, 2014, 2:14 PM EDT

House Republican leaders abruptly pulled their border supplemental legislation prior to a scheduled vote on Thursday, a sign that they lacked the votes to pass it. That means members would go home for recess without acting, a situation that GOP leaders wanted to avoid.

Immigration-weary conservatives said the $659 million supplemental, and the subsequent measure to end the Obama administration’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, didn’t go far enough in rebuking the president’s actions.

It was a remarkable defeat for the new GOP leadership team on the day that Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) stepped down as majority leader.
