Thursday Open Thread: Scientists and Technicians of the Manhattan Project

Ralph Alexander Gardner, hard plastics pioneer and one of the scientists and technicians who worked on the Manhattan Project which developed the atomic bomb, was born December 3, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, son of Vivian and Clarence Gardner.  Gardner developed an early love of chemistry, certain that he wanted to pursue a career in the sciences as early as ninth grade.  He graduated from John Adams High School in Cleveland, Ohio and began college at the Case School of Applied Science in 1939 which later became part of Case Western Reserve University.

Gardner was unimpressed with the school and transferred to the University of California, Berkley before finally graduating from the University of Illinois with a degree in Chemistry in 1943.  He then took a research position at the University of Chicago’s Argonne National laboratory and worked for the next four years on the Manhattan project. He engaged in highly classified plutonium research which was crucial in the development of the atomic bomb.  Gardner was one of the several African-American scientists employed on the Manhattan project.  Others included Lloyd Albert Quarterman, Edward A. Russell, Moddie Taylor, Harold Delaney, Benjamin Scott, J. Ernest Wilkins, and Jaspar Jefferies. George Dewitt Turner, Cecil Goldsburg White, Sydney Oliver Thompson, William Jacob Knox, Robert Johnson Omohundro, and George Warren Reid, Jr. also participated in various phases of the project.

Even after holding such a prestigious research position in World War II, Gardner was unable to find academic or professional work after the conflict ended. From 1947 to 1949 he worked as a waiter before finding work as a chemist for Standard Oil Company in Cleveland.  He returned to graduate school at Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio, earning a master’s degree in 1952 and a Ph.D. in 1959.

In 1968 Gardner began teaching at Cleveland State University where he worked full-time until 1985.   He later combined part-time teaching with work in the research lab of Molecular Technology Corp., a private firm where he also served as the Vice President of Research and on the board of directors. With a specialization in the development of hard plastics, Gardner-Chavis also worked in the fields of catalysis and molecular technology, topics on which he has published numerous scholarly articles. Gardner is now a Professor emeritus at Cleveland State University, where he continues to research catalysis and molecular technology.

Ralph Gardner added “Chavis” to his surname later in life to honor John Chavis who in 1792 became the first African American to enroll in Princeton University.

Underground is back to taking a part of the soul as you watch. Last night’s episode was a reminder of last season, when it would take days for you to recover from watching.

    • Town

Last’s night episode translates to “Some people just don’t want to leave the house. The house is nice and comfy. Sometimes you gotta leave people right in the house and keep it moving for yourself.”

      • rikyrah

I freed 1,000 slaves. Could have freed more if they knew that they were slaves.

        • Town

James was comfy in the house. He got a nice big bed and a pony. He’s not trying to leave the house again.

Clara got a taste of the house and she ain’t trying to leave either. Her downfall will be spectacular and I’m here for it!

Moral of the story: if you see somebody cuddling up to Massa, leave them alone and keep it moving.

And Keith Ellison…..brother you tried it but we’re holding entirely too many receipts for this shit. How many Dems actively distanced themselves from President Obama because they didn’t want to offend the white working class? Someone is going to have to step up and put a stop to this bullshit because this is no longer critiques from a place of support but willful sabotage and I’m tired of it.

President Donald Trump will nominate former Massachusetts Sen. Scott Brown for ambassador to New Zealand. Like Cabinet members, ambassadors require Senate confirmation — so, assuming the Senate does confirm him, it could be months before Brown assumes his post.

And now rethugs want to take it back, but they love the vets
    ——————
Veterans saw dramatic gains in coverage after Obamacare
    April 19, 2017: 6:17 PM ET

The number of uninsured veterans plummeted after Obamacare began, a new Urban Institute study has found.

The uninsured rate among veterans under age 65 dropped to 5.9% in 2015, down from 9.6% two years earlier, according to the report. The number of vets lacking coverage fell to 552,000, down from 980,000.

The changes started in 2014, when two major Obamacare coverage provisions kicked in. That’s when Medicaid expansion took effect and the Obamacare exchanges opened. Most uninsured veterans had incomes that would make them eligible either for Obamacare subsidies or Medicaid.

Veterans eligible for Medicaid expansion — individuals earning up to $16,400 — saw the largest drop in uninsured rates. Prior to Obamacare, some 21.6% of these vets lacked coverage. By 2015, this share fell to 12.2%. The declines were largest in the states that expanded Medicaid.

Trump Adviser’s Visit to Moscow Got the F.B.I.’s Attention
    APRIL 19, 2017

WASHINGTON — Ever since F.B.I. investigators discovered in 2013 that a Russian spy was trying to recruit an American businessman named Carter Page, the bureau maintained an occasional interest in Mr. Page. So when he became a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign last year and gave a Russia-friendly speech at a prestigious Moscow institute, it soon caught the bureau’s attention.

That trip last July was a catalyst for the F.B.I. investigation into connections between Russia and President Trump’s campaign, according to current and former law enforcement and intelligence officials.

It is unclear exactly what about Mr. Page’s visit drew the F.B.I.’s interest: meetings he had during his three days in Moscow, intercepted communications of Russian officials speaking about him, or something else.

EXCLUSIVE: AFTER BILL O’REILLY’S OUSTER, FOX EXECUTIVES FEAR “THERE’S MORE TO COME”
Insiders say that the troubles at Fox news are only just beginning.
    APRIL 19, 2017 7:50 PM

Inside the divided Fox News bunker, many seasoned executives are wondering if they are living in an alternate universe. As shocking as the Roger Ailes fiasco may have been, and as surprising as Megyn Kelly’s departure went down, Bill O’Reilly’s sudden ouster has absolutely shaken the newsroom, according to multiple insiders. (Ailes has fervently denied all accusations.) Executives spent a contentious Wednesday in various closed-door meetings as they finalized the fate of the network’s biggest star, who was forced out amid news of sexual-harassment allegations and settlements of those allegations.

The reactions to the news of O’Reilly’s departure were decidedly mixed in the newsroom. Some staffers cried. Others were elated. The move also laid bare divisions between the Murdoch sons, Lachlan and James, and their father, who were on opposite sides of the argument about whether to retain the anchor, according to a person close to the family. Eventually, though, Rupert Murdoch agreed with his sons about the need to remove O’Reilly, this person added. And the day was filled with an ominous tension as the elder Murdoch, the network’s C.E.O., moved from one closed-door meeting to another to inform on-air talent of their new jobs.

Idaho GOPer booed after comparing Trump’s mockery of disabled reporter to ‘objectionable’ things Obama did

Concerns over Trump administration dominate Rep, Labrador town hall
    20 APR 2017 AT 08:48 ET

Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID) held a town hall meeting with constituents on Wednesday evening in which he was repeatedly booed over his positions on President Donald Trump’s tax returns and health care.

As the Idaho Press-Tribune reports, Labrador received a hostile reception from the town hall crowd after he said that Trump shouldn’t be forced to release his tax returns because he didn’t “think that there’s anything in the law that requires the president to release his tax returns.”

One woman at the town hall asked Labrador how he could back Trump after he was caught on video mocking a disabled reporter during the 2016 presidential election.

“The day after the election, I had to explain to my stepson how we elected a monster,” the woman said.

Labrador acknowledged that Trump had said and done some “objectionable” things, but he said that former President Barack Obama had also done some things that people found objectionable.

Things got particularly heated when the topic turned to health care, as Labrador was booed by the crowd for saying he doesn’t believe anyone has the right to health care.

“I don’t believe that health care should be provided by the government,” he said. “But I do believe that people should have access to health care.”

One woman in the audience countered by noting that while she technically has “access” to a Mercedes, she can only buy one if she has enough money.

“Many people can’t afford decent health care if it is not provided by the government,” she said.

Report: Trump Campaign Behind on Legal Fees
    April 20, 2017

The Trump campaign is reportedly lagging in paying its legal fees, which have topped $4 million, Politico reported Thursday. During his presidential campaign, Trump was often accused of inciting violence, and said he would pay his supporters’ legal fees if they were sued after violently attacking protesters.

Politico reports that in at least four of the cases involving alleged assaults and incitements, Federal Election Commission filings hadn’t yet shown that the Trump campaign paid the law firms taking up the cases, or showed that payments were late or in small amounts that didn’t “appear commensurate with the amount of work performed by the firms.”

Additionally, in two cases the campaign reportedly settled lawsuits by making one-time payments to the law firms involved. Those payments were reported to have been labeled as “legal consulting” in the campaign’s FEC filings. The campaign’s legal fees have topped half a million dollars since Election Day, bringing the total to more than $4 million. The report states that total is more than double the legal fees accrued by the Obama White House this far into his first term.

I’m broken hearted for Isiah Thomas but screw Boston.

          • I wish I could have seen the look on Danny Ainge’s face watching Rondo.

    • I’m liking how the Bucks-Raptors series is shaping up and of course most definitely my Wizards.

The Bulls are playing like they actually have players that won a title. Personally I’m always wary of D Wade in the playoffs and an angry Rondo. He looked like the old one Sunday night.

Stevens has done a good job in Boston but outside of Isiah Thomas they don’t have anyone you’d fear on the court. It’s sort of piecemeal.

I can never watch the Bucks without getting pissed at Cuban all over again for passing on Giannis.

Colin Kaepernick’s old 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh penned this piece for TIME magazine about Kaepernick for their top 100 influential people in the world list. Here is what he said.

Colin Kaepernick was alone in his early protests last year when he boldly and courageously confronted perceived inequalities in our social-justice system by refusing to stand for the national anthem. At times in our nation’s history, we have been all too quick to judge and oppose our fellow Americans for exercising their First Amendment right to address things they believe unjust.

Rather than besmirch their character, we must celebrate their act. For we cannot pioneer and invent if we are fearful of deviating from the norm, damaging our public perception or—most important—harming our own personal interests.

I thank Colin for all he has contributed to the game of football as an outstanding player and trusted teammate. I also applaud Colin for the courage he has demonstrated in exercising his guaranteed right of free speech. His willingness to take a position at personal cost is now part of our American story.

How lucky for us all and for our country to have among our citizens someone as remarkable as Colin Kaepernick.

Deadly unrest continues in Venezuela as president’s £390,000 Trump party donation is revealed

    http://www.itv.com/news/2017-04-20/deadly-unrest-continues-in-venezuela-as-presidents-390-000-trump-party-donation-is-revealed/

At least three people have died and hundreds have been arrested in
intense anti-government protests in Venezuela – as it emerged President Nicolas Maduro donated $500,000 (£389,800) from the debt-ridden nation to Donald Trump’s inauguration party.

The South American nation’s opposition have vowed to keep up pressure on Mr Maduro after three weeks of public unrest involving tens of thousands.

The pressure on the president came as it emerged the Trump donation was paid by state-owned oil company PdVSA – which is heavily indebted to Russian oil giant Rosneft – through its US affiliate, Citgo Petroleum.

If true, it explains why they stuck with him and paid for the lawsuits.

    April 20, 2017

Gallup finds that Donald Trump averaged 41% job approval during his first quarter as president, 14 percentage points lower than any other president in Gallup’s polling history.

Reading you all below re: Unity Tour. It’s all bull shit. From CNN:

When the leader of the Maine Young Democrats asked the crowd what brought them to the rally, the audience erupted in “Bernie” cheers. The leader followed up by asking, “Maybe you came through because you are curious about the new DNC chairman and the future of Democratic politics?” — and the crowd cut her off with boos.

During a joint interview with MSNBC’s Chris Hayes on Tuesday night, Sanders said he does NOT even consider himself a Democrat. “I am an independent,” Sanders affirmed.

And finally: he party’s tour continues this week with visits to red and purple states, including Arizona, Florida, Kentucky, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada and Utah.

DAMN DAMN DAMN! Bring his ass to Chicago or LA and let him talk that Wall St. shit while we out here getting killed, deported etc. Chasing White voters who aren’t coming back at all. The only place that makes any sense on that list is NV. Also Bernie talking around if not OVER Perez.

So much in the article what’s been said here EXCEPT – chasing poor white trash who vote against their own interest is a losers errand.

i can’t say i agree, but in the end, he is showing his ass to more and more people and folks are fed up

        • Town

Well, let’s say it WAS Perez’s plan.

Everyone is seeing Bernie act an ass and tear down Democrats. Everyone sees which Democrats are cheering & clapping Bernie acting an ass.

So when Perez cleans house, he has the televised receipts on why they need to go.

Seriously, if Tom Perez/Democrats show Bernie/Ellison the door, they will scream and all Perez has to do is show that beautiful bean footage of Bernie saying “No I’m not a Democrat” for his receipts.
