Thursday Open Thread: The Black Madonna & Child (Dedication to Megyn Kelly)

GOOD MORNING POU!!

We continue our series on The Black Madonna and Child….

OUR LADY OF ROCAMADOUR
Rocamadour, France

From All About Mary:

According to an old legend the statue was carved by St Amator, who is identified with Zacchaeus, the tax collector of Jericho mentioned in Luke 19:1-10. The same legend reports that he was the husband of St Veronica, who wiped Jesus’ face on the way to Calvary, and that they preached the Gospel together in Gaul.

People: ‘I’ve Got 3 Opinionated, Strong, Tall Women’

Sitting down for their annual interview with PEOPLE, President and Mrs. Obama reflect on the year’s difficulties, both in the political arena and the smaller challenges he encounters at home.

“I’ve got three opinionated, strong, tall women,” says President Obama. “If they get together, they can have fun about my ears or being too loud, or how I dress.”

Washington Post: California is averaging 15,000 Obamacare enrollments each day

State health exchanges are reporting a surge in enrollment — and consumer interest — as they near a late December deadline to purchase insurance coverage.

If November had an Obamacare surge, consider this the December deluge. California averaged 15,000 daily enrollments early last week, about double the sign-ups the state had in early December. New York is now seeing about 4,500 residents choosing plans each day and, in Connecticut, the number is hovering around 1,400.

    Matt Roush’s Top 10 of 2013
    Dec 18, 2013 07:01 AM ET
    by Matt Roush

    1. Breaking Bad
What a way to go out — with a bang, on a tragic yet triumphant high, at the peak of popularity and notoriety. What could be more satisfying than that? There wasn’t a wasted moment or unexplored opportunity for suspenseful conflict in the intense last chapters of AMC’s masterful thriller, charting Walter White’s ultimate descent into criminal infamy. Bryan Cranston brilliantly captured the character’s mood swings, from wounded pride to murderous rage to sorrow over the family he lost due to his dark machinations. No maddening ambiguities in this grand finale.

    2. The Good Wife
Forget “good.” In its fifth season, CBS’s (and network TV’s) classiest and most entertaining drama has returned to greatness with an audacious act of reinvention, turning former partners — and lovers — into mortal enemies following Alicia’s (Julianna Margulies) split to start her own law firm. Everything is now beyond personal in this dangerously exciting, unpredictable new scenario. Even better, the show has lost none of its smart sex appeal and continues to tell some of the most gripping legal stories anywhere. Bravo.

I’m halfway through Broadchurch now. Typically I’m the type that doesn’t mind seeing show spoilers, but it’s so good and so suspenseful that I’m really hoping I don’t get spoiled before I finish.

The Americans was pretty good too. I hope they can pull Margo Martindale off that crappy sitcom of hers to come back for a few episodes. She’s the business.

      • rikyrah

I love Broadchurch. Totally shocked by how much I liked it.

        • BarbinAtlSouth

I’m a fan of David Tennant – so I had high hopes.

        • itgurl_29

I’d heard about the show being a hit as it was airing in UK. And then when it came on BBC America, I was hooked withing the first 10 minutes. After that, I found it online and just devoured it.

      • BarbinAtlSouth

        Loved Broadchurch!

        • MsKitty

You know it’s gonna be a mess. First off, how you gonna stretch an 8-episode show into a 20+ that’s typical US season? And more often than not UK remakes are dumbed down because the networks think we are too slow to pick up on nuances and clever plot twists.

I can’t even think of the last US remake of a UK show that was good past All in the Family and Sanford and Son.

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Hmm….now Imma hafta check out Broadchurch.

NBC: Patients pour on to successful state insurance exchanges

People are flocking to the more successful state health insurance exchanges in the final days before a late-December deadline, exchange directors said Wednesday.

So many people are calling in for help that states have had to beef up call center staffing, and insurers have agreed to let deadlines slide a bit so that as many people as possible can get coverage starting Jan 1.

Steve Benen: Dems’ sweep in Virginia now complete

The recount in Virginia’s remarkably close race for state attorney general wasn’t quite complete, but the writing was on the wall. Rather than push the contest into the hands of state lawmakers or into the courts, the Republican decided to bow out.

…. Democrats have won all three statewide races in Virginia for the first time since 1989. What’s more, this is the first time in four decades that Virginia will have a Democratic governor, Democratic lieutenant governor, Democratic attorney general, and two Democratic U.S. senators.

Obenshade wasn’t going anywhere by contesting the election and he knew it. The State Board of Elections is run by Republicans and all of the election boards in every single county and city is run by Republicans. Was he seriously going to say that the Republicans who were running the election rigged it for the Democrats? Sir, go back to Harrisonburg (where you lost) and have a seat. You tried it, though.

See, this is why POTUS does not claim him. He peeped this fool from the jump.

    http://i41.tinypic.com/2376a9.jpg

    • PBomb

Yep I just read about this. I love how he has a index of corrections to PBO’s book. It is well known that PBO’s book is a composite of characters and events, so details aren’t exact.

      No1Curr about PBO’s reject brother.

      • jds09

That index is a love letter to the RWNJs. He’ll be on a speaking tour soon. smh

      • BarbinAtlSouth

I read the PBO biography David Maraniss (?) wrote and it wasn’t bad. Apparently Sr. was a difficult man – to me it seemed like he was a difficult man because he wouldn’t play the necessary games to move up (and he drank like a fish). But he took care of his family and was generous when he had it to give (and sometimes when he didn’t). Not so great with women though.

Maraniss also said that this one’s mother was bitter and angry (how I read it) and didn’t really want the children of Sr. to mix. I’m guessing he absorbed all that and decided to make a dollar. But Joe Blow can’t sell books talking about his journey through life, he had to make sure he had something to tie it to so that people would stop to look at it, let alone pay for it.

    • Miranda

The book recounts Ndesandjo’s first encounter with Obama, who was visiting Kenya in 1988. They did not hit it off.
Barack thought I was too white and I thought he was too black,’ Ndesandjo said. ‘He was an American searching for his African roots.
‘I was a Kenyan, I’m an American but I was living in Kenya, searching for my white roots.’

      ———————-
I would have LOVED to have seen their first introduction to each other. I can only imagine the look PBO gave him after just a little bit of conversation.

      • rikyrah

that statement doesn’t make sense to me.
” Barack thought I was too White and I thought he was too Black.”
        strange line

      • itgurl_29

I think he means culturally. At least that’s how I took it from PBO’s book. He seemed all enamored with America and how cold the white man’s ice water is as compared to Kenya.

        • rikyrah

          oh…..
          thanks for this itgurl.
          makes sense now.

          • itgurl_29

Now I’m watching this interview of Auma Obama, who also wrote a book about her family. But the difference between her and that Mark character is astounding. You can feel that she has a genuine relationship with her brother and that Mark barely knows him.

And I love her she and Maya roll the “r” in his name. So beautiful.

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Maybe he’s also related to Don Lemon?

          • goldenstar

LOL! He kinda looks like him, too.

          • itgurl_29

I’m watching an interview of him now. I don’t like this dude at all. He is really trying to ride PBO’s coat tails. This dude didn’t even go by his proper last name until his half-brother came on the scene. SMH. And he just said he visited his Kenyan grandmother for the first time in 30 years. SMH. How you live in Kenya and you don’t even visit you grandmother.

He is very shady. He tries so hard to claim the Obama legacy, as if he’s doing big things like his brother. I don’t like his ass so I can see why PBO doesn’t claim him. He’s an opportunist. Now this is who Mama Joyce needs to be going after!

    Good morning POU.

I got an email setting up a preliminary phone interview with the job I applied for in NOLA. As I said, I’m OK with my current job, but with my mom’s health stuff even 1 hour way in BR being in NOLA so I could help her get to doctors appt and ER (of which ages gone alot, she’s been in and out hospital all the time. With her heart condition whenever she gets shortness of breath or tightness they 9 out of 10 admit her). My sister is there and her siblings are there, but she doesn’t call me the General for nothing, cause I’m the one who doesn’t take her lip…lol.

Still I’m not hard up for a job. The current one I have is ok, but it is frustrating and i can already tell that I kinda don’t see myself staying here. Still, I’m employed and I make good money and aside from the whole private Catholic hospital environment (yall who’ve work at a place like this will know what I mean) my main incentive is gonna bbe is it a job in my l an field (yes) & will I make more money (IDK, well see).

Ok so how do I play the phone interview. Should I ask about pay rate or wait for in person interview and of I do want to mention pay how do u do it diplomatically?

    • rikyrah

I always do pay in person, unless they ask you about it in the phone interview, then you gotta be honest and stick to what you want, especially since you said this place likes to lowball. Be persistent.

    • Tafr

Well if white folks want to go there so be it. I hope they signed up for Obamacare.

    • Alma98

This quote right here from another idiot just makes me itch all over. It’s taken from the link in POU’s TL.

By contrast, on the hip-hop site hiphopdx.com, Danielle Harling quoted Compton rapper YG, who has a hit single using the word. “If the people using that word as a word to like uplift they friend or like say ‘that’s my homie, that’s my friend,’ I feel like it’s love. Because they ain’t using it in a disrespectful way.”

      • gn

That may be how he uses it but the word’s meaning has not changed; all this is doing is enabling a racism permissive culture. Just no point or purpose to it. Figure out a new word to call friends already. This drives me crazy; my eldest brother used to use the same illogic.

        • Alma98

Exactly gn, it’s time to let it go.

        • itgurl_29

Thank you. I’ve been saying this forever. Yes, the way you say it may have a different meaning, but you are not taking the power out of that word by appropriating it. Because the same folks who say it all day long are still ready to fight if a white person says it. You can’t take the power out of it and we need to stop saying.

          • gn

            Exactly!

        • Miranda

Figure out a new word to call friends already.

Target confirms massive credit, debit card data breach

Target shoppers have been victims of a stunning theft of information on their credit and debit card accounts in recent days.

The giant retailer said Thursday about 40 million credit and debit card accounts may have been impacted in U.S. stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15, 2013.

“Target alerted authorities and financial institutions immediately after it was made aware of the unauthorized access, and is putting all appropriate resources behind these efforts,” the chain said in a statement. “Among other actions, Target is partnering with a leading third-party forensics firm to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.”

REPORT: Top Newspapers Shift Discussion On Obamacare From Political Debate To Benefits And Enrollment
Research 58 minutes ago ››› ROB SAVILLO

America’s top newspapers focused their coverage of health care reform on its political implications while largely ignoring its real-world impact in the week before the health care exchanges opened. Those papers have since shifted their focus, with most articles highlighting benefits under the law and enrollment in the exchanges in the week after the Obama administration relaunched the Healthcare.gov website.

Georgia lawmaker: Force poor kids to ‘sweep the floors’ to get school lunches
    By David Edwards
    Wednesday, December 18, 2013 16:26 EST

A Republican congressman from Georgia who is hoping to be party’s next Senate nominee said over the weekend that poor children should have to pay or sweep floors if they wanted to eat school lunches.

“I’m on the Agriculture Committee, we have jurisdiction over the school lunch,” Rep. Jack Kingston explained to the Jackson County Republican Party in a clip obtained by The Huffington Post’s Amanda Terkel. “School lunch program is very expensive.”

“But one of the things I’ve talked to the secretary of agriculture about: Why don’t you have the kids pay a dime, pay a nickel to instill in them that there is, in fact, no such thing as a free lunch?” he suggested. “Or maybe sweep the floor of the cafeteria — and yes, I understand that that would be an administrative problem, and I understand that it would probably lose you money.”

“But think what we would gain as a society in getting people — getting the myth out of their head that there is such a thing as a free lunch,” Kingston added.

      • Miranda

why yes…yes he is that very same fool!

Regarding the extension of the House work week from 3 days to 5 in 2006, Kingston commented: “Keeping us up here eats away at families. Marriages suffer. The Democrats could care less about families – that’s what this says.” He added: “Time away from Washington is just as important to being an effective member of Congress as time spent in the Capitol. When I’m here, people call me Mr. Congressman. When I’m home, people call me ‘Jack, you stupid SOB, why did you vote that way?’ It keeps me grounded.”

Of course, I don’t want this for any kid. All are precious to me.

Because everyone knows that kids are responsible for the socioeconomic status of their parents.

You know, when Speaker Pelosi increased the work week to look something like what the rest of us are working? He’s a freeloader but has now graciously linked his name to cutting food stamps at an atrocious rate. Please proceed, congressman.

Kanye West the ‘Puppet Master’ Behind Kardashian Christmas Card?

    http://esg6rzdhdg9i115s.zippykid.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/12/kards-xmas-12113sp.jpg

Kanye West was reportedly responsible for this year’s bizarre family Christmas card from his soon-to-be in-laws, the Kardashians.

The rapper, who has six-month-old daughter North with his fiancé Kim Kardashian, wanted creative control of the family’s annual photoshoot, and was reportedly the brainpower behind the casino-themed staging.

”It turns out that Kanye was the puppet master behind the photo shoot,” a source told RadarOnline.com, “as he provided art direction, sketches, and costume and make-up ideas.”

As previously reported, Kanye apparently tried to persuade esteemed fashion photographers Annie Leibovitz and Mario Testino for the shoot, but when they turned it down over budget issues David LaChapelle stepped in.

An insider added: ”Annie tried to play hardball with Kanye over the money, but the production had to stick to their budget. Ultimately, Annie and Kanye fell out of negotiations.

”Mario Testino laughed it off as a total nightmare assignment. But that happens to be David LaChapelle’s specialty, so he wound up with the gig. David was, at best, the third choice and one dictated more by budget than Kanye’s much-vaunted ‘vision’.”

    — -Renisha McBride shooter will face murder trial- – –
    – — – -A Detroit-area man who admits shooting a young, drunk woman on his porch will stand trial for second-degree murder.

Judge David Turfe (TUR’-fee) found enough evidence to send Theodore Wafer to trial after vigorous arguments from lawyers Thursday about the 54-year-old’s intent and Michigan’s self-defense law.

Wafer shot 19-year-old Renisha McBride in the face in the early hours of Nov. 2. He fired through a screen door at his Dearborn Heights home.
The judge says he made a “bad choice.”

Wafer’s attorneys say he feared for his life and should be shielded
by a self-defense law. Prosecutor Danielle Hagaman-Clark says it’s “ridiculous” that Wafer was afraid but still opened his door instead of calling the police.

An insider with knowledge of the deal tells TVNewser Roberts will be making in the high seven figures and that the negotiation was very amicable.

Roberts spent much of 2013 recovering from bone marrow transplant surgery she underwent in Sept. 2012. She returned to the show a few days a week in February, and returned fulltime in September. In between she got a standing ovation at the Espy awards, and just yesterday met Pope Francis.

I keep saying, the civil rights movement has been completely cannibalized. Allowing others to freely co-opt civil rights heritage, legacy, imagery, and moral authority was one of the bigger strategic blunders of this generation in terms of black leadership dropping the ball on black issues. Civil rights no longer means black people, which is something that the far right has dreamed of for decades. Bad mistake.

Attorney Margaret Love sent me a copy of the warrant this morning. Apparently the president also commuted the sentences of Stephanie George, Ezell Gilbert, and Reynolds Wintersmith. Here’s the FAMM statement on the news.

Obama to Commute Sentences for 8 in Crack Cocaine Cases
    By CHARLIE SAVAGE
    Published: December 19, 2013

WASHINGTON — President Obama, expanding his push to curtail severe penalties for drug offenses, is expected on Thursday to commute the sentences of eight federal inmates who were convicted of crack cocaine offenses. Each inmate has been imprisoned for at least 15 years, and six were sentenced to life in prison.

It would be the first time retroactive relief was provided to a group of
inmates who most likely would have received significantly shorter terms if they had been sentenced under current drug laws, sentencing rules and charging policies.

Most of the eight would be released in 120 days.

Dios! That is not as funny as you might think. When daughter #1 was in her residency, I visited her apartment. Some people were moving out & I saw several guys send a couch over a balcony to two others who were supposed to catch it below. The two “catchers” ended flat on their backs with a very heavy sofa bed on top of them. I had to call for the EMS. They both got hurt pretty bad.

The dude whose “great idea” this was felt really awful because he said “I didn’t think that would happen.”

I’m pretty sure they were okay in the end but they got pretty banged up with some broken bones & possible concussions. EMS hauled them to the hospital.

Tough way to learn a lesson, wow.

      • BarbinAtlSouth

When I see images like this, I always think that this was taken seconds before the people that are abut to get seriously damaged realize what’s going on and move out the way.

Seriously, who doesn’t know having a sofa dropped on you is going to hurt? Well, besides your daughters cracked up neighbors…

        • Aquagranny911

Barb, truth to tell I think they had all been drinking & not thinking. That apartment complex was mostly for students & young staff working at the nearby hospital. It was cheap & close to where she worked which is why daughter lived there for over a year. She was glad to see the back of the place when she finished her residency!
