Thursday Open Thread: The Great Migration

Happy Thursday!

The music during the exodus of millions of African Americans to the northern states reflected the spirit and hardship of the times. This music traveled from the Southern Diaspora to the North:

Black migrants told their stories in many forms from letters to poems to paintings. Music offered one of the most original forms in which the migration narrative was told.“Times Is Gettin Harder” (a 1940 recording of an older blues tune by Lucious Curtis) described various incidents from racial injustice to economic hardship that prompted one man’s journey away from the land of “cotton and corn.”

Times is gettin’ harder, Money ’s gettin’ scarce.

Soon as I gather my cotton and corn,

I’m bound to leave this place.

White folks sittin’ in the parlor, Eatin’ that cake and cream,

Nigger’s way down to the kitchen, Squabblin’ over turnip greens.

Times is gettin’ harder, Money’s gettin’ scarce.

Soon as I gather my cotton and corn,

I’m bound to leave this place.

Me and my brother was out. Thought we’d have some fun.

He stole three chickens. We began to run.

Times is gettin’ harder, Money’s gettin’ scarce.

Soon as I gather my cotton and corn

I’m bound to leave this place.

Between 1890 and 1910, most African Americans in the South had lost the right to vote through restrictive requirements such as property qualifications, poll taxes, literacy tests, and the “grandfather clause” that limited the vote to those whose grandfathers were registered voters, thus disqualifying blacks who had gotten the franchise only with the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870. The tightening of Jim Crow laws led many to leave the South, as illustrated in Alabamian Charles “Cow Cow” Davenport’s Jim Crow Blues:

I’m tired of being Jim Crowed, gonna leave this Jim Crow town,
Doggone my black soul, I’m sweet Chicago bound,
Yes, Sir, I’m leavin’ here, from this ole Jim Crow town.
I’m going up North, where they think money grows on trees,
I don’t give a doggone, if ma black soul should freeze
I’m goin’ where I don’t need no B.V.D.s.

Many men left wives and children with the intent to send for them later once they were able to find work “up north”. Mississippi Fred McDowell’s “Freight Train Blues” is a reflection of his hard and painful decision all in attempt to make a better life for their families:

    From @QuadCityPat on the Twitters….

    It’s Been a Privilege

All across the vast spaces of the internet, and specifically that ribald hippy commune known as Twitter, Salon “journalists” Joan Walsh and David Sirota caused quite a stir. You see, Ms. Walsh completely misquoted Goldie Taylor, an MSNBC contributor, author, and former Marine about a tweet that she made about drones, and Walsh and Sirota went on to try to whitesplain* privilege to a whole bunch of black folks.

For the uninitiated, whitesplain means what it sounds like. White people in the professional left trying to explain things like why there is no white privilege and the silly Negroes just don’t understand how down for the cause their white asses are. People trying to act like they know the struggles of other cultures because they read it somewhere in a book or ‘have [insert minority] friends’.

I’m a white guy (shocking!). It took me years to understand that while I can commiserate with the struggles of my Female, Persons of Color, Gay or Lesbian friends, I can never really escape the fact that I’m white and straight therefore I have been afforded a certain privilege.

Duh, because that would mean that they have

        2. done some research on who has the qualifications for Cabinet positions (or that they even know what those qualifications are)

The party of Reagan, or the party of the Club for Growth?

Posted by Greg Sargent on February 6, 2013 at 3:07 pm

At a press conference just now, Republican officials who fear that the sequester will damage our national security trained their fire mostly on President Obama, lambasting him for putting us in a position that could compromise our military.

But no matter how much ire was directed at the President, what the presser revealed with overwhelming clarity is that the battle over the sequester has sparked intra-party tensions among Republicans — one that exposes the rift between “anti-tax Republicans” and “defense Republicans,” as Josh Green put it today.

At the presser, GOP officials like John McCain, Lindsey Graham, Kelly Ayotte, and Buck McKeon all lined up to warn that the sequester must be averted at all costs. McKeon has long been pushing for a bill that would avert the sequester with an across the board cut of 10 percent to the federal workforce.

“Our defense should not be used as a bargaining chip,” Ayotte said.

The only trouble with this line is that other Republicans have explicitly said they are prepared to use the sequester in just this way — to force the spending cuts they want. John Boehner recently told the Wall Street Journal that the sequester (and not the debt ceiling) would be the primary source of the party’s leverage in the fiscal battles to come. Paul Ryan has hinted he’s prepared to let the sequester go forward if Dems won’t agree to avert it only with spending cuts. The Club For Growth, meanwhile, is actively urging lawmakers to allow it to happen.

Duke students rally against anti-Asian frat party

By M. Alex Johnson, staff writer, NBC News

Students at Duke University in Durham, N.C., gathered Wednesday to protest anti-Asian prejudice after a fraternity hosted a “racist rager” party last week replete with literature that lampooned Asian students.

More than 800 people signed up to attend the rally on a Facebook page published by the university’s Asian American Alliance. The alliance later closed the page to public comment, saying national attention had made it an inappropriate forum “for a productive discussion of how to improve our campus.”

“Something is deeply wrong with Duke. Something is deeply wrong with our community,” a representative of the association said at the gathering Wednesday afternoon. “… This protest is about the destructive prejudice that must be uprooted from every corner of Duke to make this place an inclusive and safe place for all.”

The rally was planned after Kappa Sigma fraternity — which was allowed to return to campus last year after having dissolved in 2002 amid a misconduct investigation — threw a theme party Friday at which attendees dressed up in stereotypical Asian costumes, the campus newspaper, The Chronicle, reported.

    ——————————————————————————–

The event was promoted through flyers and email messages that included stereotyped Asian spellings like “herro” and “peopre” and images of the late North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il. It was promoted on Twitter with the hashtag #RacistRager.

I’ve always found white racism against Asians, especially in school settings, very telling in its hypocrisy. White people always tell Black people and Latinos not to expect anything from them like affirmative action because it isn’t merit based and that all college admissions should be based on tests only. However, when Asians get in the mix, they generally pass and excel at these tests because they have a culture of learning that prizes test taking and memorization, and the necessity to do well to please family, white people get mad because Asians force them to up their academic game by studying more. I remember reading about a California HS where the white teens were angry that the Asian kids forced them to study more and participate less in sports and that made their school experience less pleasurable. I was like ‘wut, you mad cuz you have to study more?’ Plus, there’s the fact that white alumni get mad when they come back to their school and see it’s mostly Asian. So, yeah, this doesn’t surprise me.

      • Miranda

I remember that same article about the California HS. Very telling indeed.

        • rikyrah

I remember that article too…it was like ‘ ain’t that about nothing’…reading the whining of the White parents having to compete with the Asians that…STUDY

And then they limit their enrollment numbers in the colleges, after telling black and hispanic student that college admissions should be on MERIT.

        • jds09

Bottom line…white folks want these prestigious institutions all to themselves. Goal post moving, rule changing and the occasional “you are not welcomed here” tactic (the racist rager) are the tools.

          • JojoRaze

            We have a winner!

          • QOakaJP

And yet, having people rely on their *own* institutions (HBCU’s, the best example) is discouraged and labeled as “reverse-racism.”

        • JojoRaze

Yep, this is a thing especially in the university of California. The white alumni from the 60s 70s and 80s were mad that so many of the new kids are Asian-American, and were loath to donate. That’s why schools started limiting Asians, to please the alumni.

SNEED EXCLUSIVE: Pending Jesse Jackson Jr. plea deal includes ‘significant jail time,’ source says

    By MICHAEL SNEED msneed@suntimes.com February 6, 2013 9:41PM

Sneed has learned a plea deal is now on the table between former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and federal authorities probing allegations of campaign fund misuse.

Sneed is told the plea deal includes Jackson serving time in federal prison.

“Significant jail time is now definitely a part of the deal,” said a top Sneed source close to the probe.

“But I think [Jackson’s wife] Sandi, feels like she was thrown under the bus by her husband, ” now that a separate probe has begun on her, a second source added.

Sandi Jackson claims she was stunned by campaign finance abuse disclosures against her husband, who has been treated for mental disorders and allegedly spent $40,000 on a Rolex watch purchased with campaign funds.

This disclosure follows in the wake of an exclusive report Tuesday by Sneed and Sun-Times political reporter Natasha Korecki, revealing the feds’ financial probe of the once-politically powerful Jackson couple has evolved into two separate investigations, with federal authorities now taking an independent look at former Ald. Sandi Jackson.

The Founding Fathers created safeguards against internal governmental subversion with a Constitution that features a balance of power to assuage the possibility of one party deliberately creating economic volatility with devastating consequences for the nation’s fiscal health.

As the deadline looms for Congress to act to avert Republicans’ across-the-board sequester spending cuts that economists warn will destroy baseline one million jobs and throw the economy into a recession, leading Republicans have embraced the idea of allowing the sequester to take effect on March 1st. The Republican line in the sand is their aversion to new revenue, and according to a deputy majority whip, Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK), “I’m all against raising any additional revenue on this. Dannie, here’s a part of your friend’s article. TRUTH!

I often say that our society hates black & brown children. I am always accused of generalizing or of hyperbole. But I can point to a pile of evidence that I am in fact right. I think that people who protest at this characterization are focused on whether individuals are mean to other individuals. They look at themselves and think I don’t have any personal animus towards individual black & brown children. That’s fine. What I see, however, is a set of policies and programs that harm children of color consistently and disproportionately. I count this Temple University Cradle to Grave program as more evidence of how much we despise black and brown youth in this country (especially if they are poor).

Close your eyes and imagine the children from Sandy Hook being subjected to such a program. I’ll bet that you can’t imagine it, if you are being honest. For Sandy Hook’s children, such a program would be seen as “traumatizing.”

Utah Democrats call for more protected public land, slowly

    By Kent Jones

One of the more sublime locations on the planet is the 1.4 million acre Greater Canyonlands in southern Utah, a place that inspires fierce protective feelings amongst those who don’t want gas, oil, tar sands, or uranium companies to set up shop there.

Environmental groups like the Sierra Club and outdoor related businesses would like President Obama to invoke the Antiquities Act of 1906 and, with one Teddy Roosevelt-like stroke of the pen, proclaim Greater Canyonlands a national monument This group includes Aron Ralston of 127 Hours fame, the adventurer who amputated his own arm after being trapped for six days in one of those canyons. New Rove Effort Has G.O.P. Aflame

WASHINGTON — Their battle with Democrats will have to wait. For now, Republicans have their hands full fighting one another.
The strategist Karl Rove and his allies are under withering criticism for creating the Conservative Victory Project, their effort to help rebuild the Republican Party and win control of the Senate. Their pledge to take sides in primary races in an effort to pick candidates they see as more electable has set off a fierce backlash from conservative activists.

“This is not Tea Party versus establishment,” Mr. Rove said, defending his new project on Fox News. “I don’t want a fight.”

Yet a fight has broken out this week across the conservative media spectrum, with Mr. Rove drawing the ire of Tea Party leaders and commentators who suggest that he and other party strategists are the problem, rather than the solution, to the challenges facing Republicans.

Kerry Washington: “I Would Not Have Done ‘Scandal’ If President Were Black” [VIDEO]
Feb 7, 2013 By NewsOne Staff

In the latest issue of “Ebony,” Hollywood’s latest “It Girl,” Kerry Washington, who graces the cover, says that she would have passed on the role of Olivia Pope if the White, married president that she has a steamy affair with on the show had been Black.

…The scandalous nature of her relationship with the POTUS on the show does not escape Washington, who says that is exactly why she would have passed on the role if the character were played by a Black man.

    Excerpt from EBONY interview:

“I was a little concerned because [the character has] a scandalous relationship with the [occupant of the] White House,” the actress said. “I thought, ‘If the president on the show is Black, I will not do the show.’ Because to me, it was too important a moment. I didn’t want to do anything that compromised my relationship with the [president] or that made it seem like I had an insider view on the Obama presidency. I thought that would be so disrespectful and so against all the work that I had done.”

I think Shonda Rhimes felt this way, too hence her making Fitz and Mellie white instead of Black.

Ms. Kerry Baby! Setting the record straight. Thanks for sharing.

      • JojoRaze

I’m glad Kerry set this straight. I didn’t mind Shonda making the show since Shonda always said this is fiction she said on her Twitter page that she gets paid to make stuff up so don’t tweet or DM her conspiracy theories. Kerry, however, ticked me off by kind of leaving out there that she and PBO might be having some affair. With this statement, she finally states unequivocally that any one trying to insinuate she and PBO have any sexual relationship are just letting their fevered imagination take over.

I don’t watch the show, but I always read Luvvie’s recaps of it since the gifs have me in stitches.

GOP throws new roadblock in Hagel’s way

    By Steve Benen

Former Sen. Chuck Hagel, President Obama’s choice to lead the Defense Department, has generated some controversy, but is nevertheless well positioned to earn Senate confirmation. There’s been some chatter about an unprecedented Republican filibuster — no modern cabinet nominee has ever faced such obstructionism — but there are more than enough votes to overcome the opposition.

So, it’s over? With Hagel set to clear the Senate Armed Services Committee today, it’s only a matter of time before the Nebraska Republican is sworn in, right? As Ali Gharib reported late last night, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has put a new roadblock between Hagel and confirmation — and it’s a doozy

Enemies line up against Conservative Victory Project

    By Steve Benen

Karl Rove’s attack operation, American Crossroads, probably expected some pushback when it launched the Conservative Victory Project, intended to help discourage the Republican Party’s right wing from nominating unelectable loons who lose general-election races. But I suspect the reaction from the far-right is far more intense than anything Rove’s team imagined.

Yesterday, for example, Crossroads spokesperson Jonathan Collegio appeared on DC-area radio show and described L. Brent Bozell, a prominent far-right activist, as a “hater.”

Now, for folks below a certain age, “hater” refers to those who are frequently negative. It appears that’s not quite how Bozell and his allies took it.

I just want to say that this drone issue is so stupid. I love how the ACLU and other emo left idiots have no answer for how to deal with terrorists in those regions. America is not the only country to use force against terrorists as we have seen with European countries and Russia.

Yes there should be more oversight and caution but the drone program is not some big issue. And idiots like Ron Wyden shouldn’t talk when he voted to keep GITMO open against the White house’s wishes.

    • crazycanuck

Of course they don’t have answers. This is not about having answers, or about any kind or real discussion. This is all about their hatred of that black man in the whitehouse.

      • jziglar

True ! And I love how the media had no issue going along with the attack on civilian trials for terrorists, or not addressing Congress keeping GITMO open. Now we should care about drones ? Please !

After falling in sequester ditch, GOPers look for way out

    By Steve Benen

Remember the Republicans’ debt-ceiling crisis in 2011? It was about a year and a half ago when GOP leaders handed President Obama a ransom note: accept more than $2 trillion in debt reduction or the economy gets it. The parties agreed to more than $1 trillion in cuts, but agreed they needed more time to work on a larger agreement.

So, they crafted a mechanism intended to force both sides to the negotiating table — a sword of Damocles hanging over Washington’s head that would be so severe, Democrats and Republicans would have a strong incentive to strike a deal to avoid the drastic consequences.

The mechanism was automatic sequestration cuts — or “the sequester” — valued at about $1.2 trillion, half of which would come from the Pentagon. (Democrats originally wanted automatic tax hikes to motivate the GOP, but Republicans refused — even hypothetical tax increases were deemed outrageous — and deep Defense cuts were used instead.)

These cuts kick in three weeks from today, and so far, the two sides aren’t close. Democrats want a balanced deal the GOP should find tolerable — spending cuts on one side of the ledger, revenue from closed tax loopholes on the other. Republicans, meanwhile, say they’re prepared to simply let the sequester happen, regardless of the consequences to the economy, the military, or the public.

At least, that’s what they say publicly. Behind the scenes, the GOP strategy is on shaky ground.

—— –Obama Plans Fund-Raising Trips to Aid Senate and House Candidates- –

    – – —-President Obama may have run his last political campaign, but that does not relieve him of his obligations to the Democratic Party.

The president, who has a vested interest in Democrats retaining their Senate majority and trying to narrow Republican control of the House, is already making plans to return to the campaign trail. He has agreed to hold at least 14 separate fund-raising events this year, a Democratic official familiar with the plans told The New York Times, characterizing it as an “aggressive schedule.

    – —-SNIP- —

–Mr. Obama will appear at 10 events outside Washington: five for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and five for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. He will also host one event for each committee in Washington as well as appearing at two joint fund-raising galas for House and Senate candidates.

The president’s fundraising schedule is likely to intensify even more next year. Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. will adhere to his own campaign schedule this year, as will First Lady Michelle Obama.- –
    THERE IS MORE.

i wouldnt fundraise for none of those mickyficks

      • Camille

        I wouldn’t either.

Don’t trust a single one of them.

And President Obama looks totally worn-out. He does need to slow down a tad.

These people just aren’t worth running one’s self ragged for or sacrificing valuable family bonding and reconnecting time for that matter.

Simply not worth it especially since in the end, and despite all President Obama’s best efforts, all the credit, praise and respect will still go to Bill Clinton.
