In Gun Address, Obama Talks About Grace McDonnell

As he announced proposals to curb an “epidemic” of gun violence Wednesday, President Barack Obama paused to address the parents of 7-year-old Grace McDonnell, who sat in the front row at the White House.

After she died in the Newtown school attack, McDonnell’s parents, Chris and Lynn McDonnell, gave Obama one of their daughter’s paintings. It hangs in the president’s private study.

”When I visited Newtown last month, I spent some private time with many of the families who lost their children that day,” Obama said. “And one was the family of Grace McDonnell. Grace’s parents are here. Grace was 7 years old when she was struck down — just a gorgeous, caring, joyful little girl. I’m told she loved pink. She loved the beach. She dreamed of becoming a painter.”

“And so just before I left, Chris, her father, gave me one of her paintings, and I hung it in my private study just off the Oval Office. And every time I look at that painting, I think about Grace. And I think about the life that she lived and the life that lay ahead of her, and most of all, I think about how, when it comes to protecting the most vulnerable among us, we must act now — for Grace. For the 25 other innocent children and devoted educators who had so much left to give.”

Happy Birthday FLOTUS!! My husband has the biggest crush on you..but I’m not jealous because I always tell him how fine your husband is!

    • conlakappa

Are you I? And I you? My husband stands stark still when the First Lady is on television. My uncle, an old player from way back, swears no one loves her like he does.

      • It hurts them to their heart that she defined and redefined First Lady with style and grace.

      • AxelFoley

See, your husband and uncle are gonna have to step off. That’s my lady. I only let Barack borrow her. No one else.

Report: Tiger wants to remarry Elin

Tiger Woods is a single man these days, but he may not still be over his ex-wife Elin Nordegren.

According to the National Enquirer, Woods wants to remarry Nodregren and he’s offering a huge chunk of change to get her back. The magazine also reports that Tiger even proposed to her over Christmas, getting down on one knee and presenting Nodregren with a ring.

Nodregren is reportedly considering the proposal from Woods, who is desperate to get Nordegren back, but wants a $350 million anti-cheating clause added to the contract.

Woods’ proposed deal reportedly is worth over half of his estimated $600 million fortune.

“Tiger didn’t even balk at the demand. Even though his accountants think he’s crazy, he’s ready to sign the pre-nup and set a wedding date,” a source told the magazine.

“The guy has never recovered from being dumped by Elin. He’s dated lots of models and bimbos, but none of them were more than a one night stand.”

President Obama in the Connecticut Post: As a society, our first task must be to care for our children – to shield them from harm and give them the tools they need not only to pursue their dreams, but to help build this country. That is how we will be judged. And in the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, it’s clear we have a long way to go.

That’s why, last month, I asked Vice President Biden to lead an effort to come up with concrete steps we can take right now to keep our kids safe, help prevent mass shootings, and reduce the broader epidemic of gun violence in this country. And on Wednesday, I put forward a specific set of proposals based on Joe’s recommendations. Because while there is no law or set of laws that can prevent every senseless act of violence completely, if there is even one thing we can do to reduce this violence – if even one life can be saved – we have an obligation to try.

As President, I’m committed to doing my part. That’s why I signed 23 executive actions giving law enforcement, schools, mental health professionals, and the public health community the tools they need to help reduce gun violence.

Corporate Profits Soar as Executives Attack Obama Policy
    By David J. Lynch

Tom Donohue, the president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, last week said higher taxes and a “flood of new regulations” will damage an already subpar economy. “In many ways, we’re going backwards,” he said.

Such complaints, echoed by corporate executives throughout President Barack Obama’s first term, obscure one fact: American business has never had it so good.

U.S. corporations’ after-tax profits have grown by 171 percent under Obama, more than under any president since World War II, and are now at their highest level relative to the size of the economy since the government began keeping records in 1947, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

National Memo: How did California go from a projected $26 billion budget deficit to projected surpluses? …. what changed since Jerry Brown was elected in 2010? …. he was able to push through painful cuts that forced Californians to take the budget seriously. But what helped him most was the state’s demographics and shift toward the Democratic Party.

….. the state went for President Obama by a margin of about 10 percent and elected a supermajority of Democrats to the state legislature. Also on the ballot in November were ballot propositions designed to secure more revenue. One temporarily increased income taxes on high earners while temporarily increasing the state sales tax for all Californians to fund education…. Voters said yes to higher taxes.

Just a few months later, Brown announced that for the first time in about a decade, a governor of California was presenting a balanced budget….

The wrong message, the wrong messenger
    By Steve Benen
    Thu Jan 17, 2013 9:18 AM EST.

At his press conference the other day, President Obama offered the political world a reminder about reality: “The debt ceiling is not a question of authorizing more spending. Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. It simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already committed to. These are bills that have already been racked up and we need to pay them.”

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) said this explanation may seem “compelling,” but he disagrees with it anyway.

Now, you may be thinking that this sounds like pretty routine rhetoric from congressional Republicans, and it’s true — nonsensical GOP talking points on the debt ceiling are painfully common.

But the reason this quote stood out for me is the background of the person who said it: Rob Portman is the former director of the Office of Management and Budget. The Republican senator, in other words, must realize what he’s saying doesn’t make sense.

And now we’re down to the racism

I’ve been thinking about what Peggy Noonan said on This Week ever since I saw the clip a few days ago.

You have to ask yourself what is the root of this anxiety/fear Noonan is talking about in all her unctuousness. Paul Krugman nailed it when he said that the reality of life in America is that its safer than its been in decades. So where is the fear coming from?

About the same time this discussion was happening, Colin Powell was answering that question.

America is changing. The “majority” will soon be a “minority.” And not only that…the leader of the free world is an African American.

I have long thought that we are passing through a milestone in this country’s long march towards “perfecting our union.” History might not judge it as significant as the Civil War or the Civil Rights Movement, but it represents a critical stage in our development. A black man is no longer simply leading African Americans, he’s leading the country. Moving from a stage where white people “granted” African Americans their freedom from slavery or their civil rights, we now in an era where white people are required to look black people in the eye with respect and equality – even be led by one. That’s not going down real well for some folks.

Jameson’s. Or we’re both wrong and she kicks it old school with bathtub gin dandelion and/or elderberry wine.

        • MsKitty

Nah, Peg probably thinks she’s too refined for Jameson’s. Can totally see her daintily sipping the Harvey’s Bristol Cream, with pinky finger extended upward (of course).

          • Dick Powell Murder My Sweet (1944): “I offered her a drink and she was the kind of a gal who’d take a drink even if she had to knock you down to get the bottle.”

Don’t you dare curse Jameson’s that way.

          YOU TAKE THAT BACK!!!

    • nellcote

History might not judge it as significant as the Civil War
Feels like we’ve been living thru Civil War 2.0 for 5 years now.

      • AxelFoley

Hell, the Civil War never ended. We’ve been in a Cold Civil War since 1865.

    • Town

Moving from a stage where white people “granted” African Americans their freedom from slavery or their civil rights, we now in an era where white people are required to look black people in the eye with respect and equality – even be led by one. That’s not going down real well for some folks.

The people whining about diversity in the Obama Administration don’t give 2 craps about diversity, they saw all them white men standing at attention, subservient to Barack Obama and it disturbed them to the very core of their empty souls.

Someone using a fictitious name “apparently ingratiated herself with Manti and then conspired with others to lead him to believe she had tragically died of leukemia,” the school said.

Happy Birthday, First Lady Michelle Obama!

  • GLH posted this story in last night’s thread, but I thought I’d bring it over here for those who missed it.

VERY interesting considering throughout PBO’s first term, the CBC was “All Black Everything”, but now Rep. Fudge is admitting that many of them don’t even represent majority minority districts!

New CBC Leader: We’re Not Just for Blacks
Rep. Marcia Fudge on how the group will look out for Americans of all colors over the next four years.

    By: Jenée Desmond-Harris | Posted: January 16, 2013 at 12:59 AM

Rep. Marcia Fudge of Ohio took the chairperson’s gavel from Rep. Emanuel Cleaver at a recent ceremonial swearing-in for members of the Congressional Black Caucus. With it, she inherited the responsibility to lead the group of African-American elected officials that has long considered itself the “conscience of the Congress” on issues that transcend race.

That’s right — the black legislators, many of whom represent diverse districts, are more concerned with the well-being of children, the disabled and anyone who is struggling economically than the public understands. “People mistakenly believe we only represent minorities,” Fudge told The Root.

In her remarks about her plans for the group’s priorities during President Obama’s second term, she said, “The imperative is to define what is right and then do it.” That, she explained when we spoke to her after the ceremony, means advocating for legislation that protects all of America’s most vulnerable citizens.

    MORE: http://www.theroot.com/views/new-cbc-leader-were-not-just-blacks?page=0,0&wpisrc=root_more_news

I wonder what the CBC shill has to say about this?

    • conlakappa

I’m sorry but didn’t these people complain in the President’s first term when he said he wasn’t just for black people?

    • macademic

IMHO two things are going on: one, they see the demographics where black folks are not the largest majority and want to pivot toward new/ other constituents; two, (let me tread carefully) some black folks define success as when some endeavor is integrated, ie. no longer “just black.” These impulses toward inclusivity can help perfect our Union as the President and others have said… or they can represent a lot of the same bedroom-slippered bs the CBC et al have been known for. We’ll see, won’t we?

      • conlakappa

Or (3) they have a pivot foot ready for when they return to being ignored on January 19, 2017. Maybe they will have even changed their name by then! It’s all about the branding.

    • TyrenM

New CBC Leader: We’re Not Just for Blacks.

The brother who did the Blackonomics books and videos, called this out in the 90’s. Damn if it ain’t true today.

      • creolechild

Note to CBC: Just so you know, many blacks aren’t that into you either…but please proceed if you think you got it like that!

    • dannie22

      they not for blacks either

    • qosine

This stance seems so different from PBO and Justice Sotomayor, who bring their whole self/being to the project at hand. They believe they have something special/unique to offer/contribute and so they commit fully.

Her new book, My Beloved World, seems to have the same approach as PBO – open, here’s how I figured out a lot of important things about myself, family, life’s work. I believe you are important, and I believe I have something valuable to offer. Hey there, everybody, kind of thing. JS self-affirmed herself as “A Wise Latina, ” in such a cool, grounded, interesting way.

And PBO. well, / / / “I am the President of the United States” and we’re all moving ON.

Caveat: Of course, the House members have to think about 2014. On the other hand, I want people in the House who are Obamacrats. This train needs to keep on moving.

    — – 1. Turnover in staff and cabinet leadership. It is very important for a president to bring in new leaders in a second term. The folks that served in the first term are tired, exhausted, and lack much of the creativity needed to energize a second term.

    2. Second term scandals. Be constantly aware and diligent in avoiding scandals and big mistakes that could doom the second term no matter the personnel or vision in place.

    3. Rediscover first term vision. It is also important for President Obama to look back at the biggest things he didn’t accomplish in his first term and renew an effort to get that done.

They can have the goddamn job. The president walked in, and he started laughing. He said, “Well, Joe, the thing I’ve always loved about you is you say what you believe.” I mean it. — –First lady Michelle Obama’s birthday is today, an important milestone in anyone’s life, but certainly a major one for a woman who has come into her prime in the public eye. As a seasoned public administrator before ascending to the White House, Michelle Obama honed her skills as a servant who was always seeking to make her community better while still in Chicago. After becoming first lady at 44, she has taken that previously perfected role of service to even greater heights.

Using the power of her position to teach children to eat better and helping military families who are struggling are just two of first lady Michelle Obama’s many acts of caring. Over just a few years in the national arena, we have seen the first lady grow into an even stronger leader, not letting the glare of the spotlight or the voices of her opponents stop her from living her best life while uplifting those in need. And to top it off, Michelle Obama has done it all with a personal style that has inspired admirers and boosted the American fashion industry — by billions.

    FYI: http://www.healthcare.gov/

Good news! The healthcare exchanges are moving forward!
People can find out how they work and how to enroll this October.
As you know, so many people don’t know how great this is, thanks
to the liars (looking at you PL, GOP, media, my TN reps).

Case in point: Last week, I was telling my stylist about the ACA.
He was saying his premiums have gone up, and I told him to check
out this site. Once he heard about the benefits, he’s like, hey this
sounds really good. He started talking about countries that had
healthcare for everyone, because “they decided that as a people it
was important.” I said, that’s how PBO sees it, so that’s why he
was such a champion of healthcare.

    • Thanks for the link qosine.

    • nellcote

I hope this fall the HHS does a big media info push so people can get informed and not rely on the msm to get the message out.

My apologies, qosine. I duplicated this information on the afternoon thread. GAH!

    — –LeBron James hits 20,000 points and 5,000 assists in blowout win over Warriors (VIDEOS) – –

    – – – — –LeBron James has been a star from roughly the minute he entered the NBA in 2003, and over that time he’s accomplished a heck of a lot. As a player who can do pretty much anything he wishes on the court, LeBron has accrued a lot of numbers over that time, and in his 10th season he’s starting to hit some impressive round numbers as part of his natural assault on the NBA record books.

On Wednesday night in Oakland, James hit two of those marks against the Golden State Warriors in the midst of a blowout 92-75 win. Five minutes into the game, he found a cutting Dwyane Wade for an easy dunk to notch his 5,000th assist. Later, with just over 2:45 left in the first half, LeBron dribbled to his right and knocked down a pull-up jumper to become the youngest player to 20,000 points in NBA history.

LeBron finished the game with 25 points, 10 assists, and seven rebounds in just 30 minutes of play. Watch his historic basket above, and check out the assist after the jump.

    – – –Rubio Claims Obama Doesn’t Have ‘The Guts’ To Admit He’s Against The Second Amendment – –

    — —Florida Senator and likely 2016 presidential candidate Marco Rubio was first out of the gate to criticize President Obama’s violence prevention plan on Wednesday, issuing a statement claiming that “Guns are not the problem; criminals with evil in their hearts and mentally ill people prone to violence are.”

In the hours that followed, Rubio appeared on a slate of conservative TV and radio shows to articulate his opposition to any efforts to limit access to assault weapons or high-capacity magazine, arguing that the policies “don’t work” and wouldn’t have prevented massacres like the shooting in Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Rubio argued that any gun restrictions would be ignored by criminals.”The only people who follow the law are people who follow the law,” Rubio told Fox News’ Bill O’Reilly. “Criminals don’t care what the law is. They ignore the law. That’s why they are criminals.” He went further, suggesting that Obama was exploiting the shooting in Newtown, Connecticut to infringe on the Constitutional rights of law abiding citizens:

Rubio shoulda learned when Team Romney didn’t even tell him his daughter was in the hospital while he was stumping for them. He’s just a Brown face to attract Brown votes, nothing more nothing less.

“She has elevated the American fashion industry into the spotlight in a way that no other first lady has, including Jackie Kennedy,” said Pulitzer-prize winning fashion writer Robin Givhan.“She has raised
the profile of so many fashion designers in the industry…”

I can’t read the article, but it looks like an AA site. She knows she can’t say the crap she’s been saying there about the First Lady.

    • nellcote

      I like this observation too:

“Michelle Obama’s choices for the first inauguration, Givhan said, showcased the “American dream”—that small businesses operated by tenacious entrepreneurs can be successful. Toledo and Wu’s companies are the epitome of the “small business model politicians are quick to lavish praise on,” she told the AFRO.”

Erin Burnett Says NRA First Daughters Attack Ad Same Thing As Family Photo
    by Tommy Christopher | 11:26 am, January 17th, 2013

The National Rifle Association is receiving the attention it desperately craves for launching an attack ad in which they slam President Obama for sending his kids to a school with armed police officers, while… proposing funding for armed police officers in any school that wants them? While the ad is nonsensical and false, most of the outrage has centered on the NRA’s decision to involve the President’s daughters, Sasha and Malia. On Tuesday night’s OutFront, however, CNN’s Erin Burnett seemed to suggest that President Obama’s release of a family photo made the First Daughters fair game for political attacks.

500 hundred yards, that is 3000 figging feet! Over half a mile. It is a miracle that no one was shot or killed. I hope these nutbuckets not only go to jail but that the homeowners sue their asses off!

I’ve been compiling articles like this, too many to count right now, in my crusade to stop this madness!

  • Aquagranny911

Up date on grandson. He was discharged about an hour ago. He’s not feeling too great but that has not stopped his parents from kicking his ass (verbally) for breaking rules and being muy estupido!

They are good kiddos but the whole pack of them are in deep caca especially the 16 year old driver who just got her driver’s license on Monday. The accident was her fault & she will probably lose her license until she is 18. In AZ new drivers are not allowed to drive with passengers without an adult until they have been driving at least 6 months. If the state doesn’t take her license her parents will!

All five of them were supposed to come straight home their separate ways after swim practice. But the little bobble heads decided they could go to Sonic for a snack & then dizzy little chica would drive them all home in her Mom’s car.

Thank goodness no one was hurt too badly & all five were wearing their seat belts. Honestly, teenagers make me muy loco!

    • conlakappa

Glad to hear he’s just sore along with being sore from the parental tongue lashing. What kind of car was it that there could be 5 seat belts? Yes, very good that no one was seriously hurt–a bunch of teenagers piled into a car = recipe for disaster. There was a horrific crash in this area that caused laws to be changed.

      • Aquagranny911

Older Ford Taurus, the driver & one passenger in front & three riding in back. The Taurus is a pretty solid car which was a good thing for all of them. The guy she left turned in front of was driving some kind of smaller vehicle.

We had a bunch of accidents with green teen drivers which changed our laws about new drivers as well and the schools made a rule of no driving off campus for lunch. It used to be taking your life in your hands to drive near some high schools around noon time.

        • conlakappa

The boys who were in the accident here were going home after school and were on a hairpin turn right near the school. It was so sad. I only asked about the seatbelts because I had a boss who was telling me about buying a new car for his daughter and the rule that you cannot have more people than you have seatbelts. It’s not something I ever thought about. Keeping good thoughts about your grandson.

          • Aquagranny911

Bad! This brings up the horror for me when my youngest went off the side of a mountain road in CO when the driver feel asleep at the wheel. This was also after school. The driver had been up two nights in a row working on a school project.

Fortunately, the kiddo was driving an ancient Volvo station wagon, built like a tank & all were wearing seat belts & they managed to land upside down on a ledge that was only about 20 feet drop. They had minimal injuries considering the circumstances & that they could have easily rolled all the way down the mountain & been killed!

I just have to say this, when our oldest was first born, My hubby said to me:

“You realize that we have now given a hostage to fortune and our lives will never be the same again”

            Truer words were never spoken!

          • conlakappa

This was a few years back so just before the texting mania.

    • Alma98

I’m glad he’s ok AG, let’s hope everyone learned from this.

      • Aquagranny911

The big lesson for him is he won’t be swimming for awhile with a broken ankle so he will miss some meets. Also he is so GROUNDED! He’s not allowed to ride in cars with teen drivers and he was supposed to come right home on the bus after swim practice. Live & learn, I hope!

    • GN

So glad to hear that he’s okay!

    • Daltex82

      Thumbs Up!

Glad to hear that your Grandson and the other passengers will be okay.

    • JojoRaze

Thanks for the update AQ! This hit home for me since my nephew is also a swimmer and water sports fan-he does crew and water polo, too. Glad to hear they are all safe. Sounds like the kids weren’t up to anything nefarious-they all remembered to wear seatbelts so they have some lick of sense. I don’t envy parents today at all especially in places where driving is such a big rite of passage for teens. My nephew is 17 and can’t drive and has no interest to learn even though his mother was trying to teach him. But we live in NYC where there is a subway stop or bus available to go anywhere so he’s like “Why bother?” But he manages to drive me crazy in other ways…but that’s another story.

      • Aquagranny911

Teenagers can send you loco! Be happy your nephew isn’t interested in driving right now. Let him do that when he is older & wants to take the full responsibility. And also has some good sense!

    • PBomb

That is good news to know that your grandson is okay.

    • Miranda

So glad they’re all ok…..you wanna shake the daylights outta of them and hug them at the same time huh AG? LOL

Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley to pay $557M over shoddy foreclosure practices

Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley will pay a combined $557 million to mortgage borrowers over shoddy foreclosure practices. The Federal Reserve on Wednesday said the two financial firms have agreed pay $232 million in cash payments to homeowners, along with $325 million in other assistance, such as loan modifications and forgiveness of deficiency judgments.

More than 220,000 borrowers whose homes were in foreclosure in 2009 and 2010 will receive cash compensation over practices such as robo-signing, where foreclosure documents weren’t properly reviewed before being signed. Eligible borrowers are expected to receive compensation ranging from hundreds of dollars up to $125,000, depending on the type of servicer error.[….]
