PBO is about to come on. My late father, late grandfather, all my uncles on my Dad’s side and so many of my extended family and friends worked/work at Newport News Shipbuilding–Huntington Ingalls.

It is absolute bullshit what Republicans have done with this sequestration shit. Can these mofos finally say the federal government CREATES and SUSTAINS good paying jobs? The majority of workers in Virginia rely on federal jobs…PERIOD.

    • rikyrah

What kills me are the mofos in these jobs THAT VOTE REPUBLICAN

      • Alma98

We’re on the same wave length rikyrah.

      • MsKitty

I see it every day, and it always amazes me these folks never connect the dots.

        • They’re too busy looking at PBO’s skin color.

        • Alma98

They know what’s up MsKitty they just think it won’t happen to them. You know, complexion protection.

    • Alma98

Northcarolina too Monie. I remember whenever there was talk of base closing, the towns surrounding the base would freakout. They would stage protests when the reviewing panel came to assess the base. The sad thing is a lot of these places have people who did not vote for PBO. But it was republicans they should have been worried about.

  • rikyrah

    you musical selections are fantastic

  • MsKitty

I don’t know who Ree-Ree was with when she recorded Dr. Feelgood, but he must have been all that and a bag of chips. She was feeling those lyrics real hard.

    • isonprize

I heard the rumor that Dr Feelgood was Sam Cooke.

(Even if he wasn’t for ReeRee, as fine as he was, I’m sure he probably was to somebody….)

      • Miranda

WHAAAAAAA?!!? Ree Ree and Sam Cooke?!?!

        • isonprize

I thought I remembered Ed Bradley shadin’ that in his 60 minutes interview with Aretha, but it’s not on YouTube anymore, so I can’t check it out…

Sam was only 10 years older than her, so it’s entirely possible. Also, she and Marvin are/were about the same age, so there’s that…

She’s very guarded about her personal life, which of course is her right. I don’t know, it seems like she rebelled a bit, ‘specially since she was a preacher’s kid.

          • lamh36

well ya know what they say ’bout preachers daughters…LOL

I saw that the oldest one died recently, which brought a certain nostalgia for hearing them 40 years ago.

  • crazycanuck

I discovered somebody new yesterday, Zahara from South Africa. No idea what she is saying, but I really like the song

    • Alma98

She makes me think of India Arie.

      • crazycanuck

Yes, she has a bit of that vibe.

    • Aquagranny911

Zahara is great! She’s also popular in Botswana & such a beautiful talented woman!

Forgot to add that she usually sings in Xhosa but does songs in English as well.

      • crazycanuck

Yes, she is very talented. AG is there anyone you don’t know lol? She is def someone to keep watching.

        • Aquagranny911

LOL! Lots of people I don’t know but I do know of some great African talent because of my SIL. He is a Zahara fan.

    • itgurl_29

Love that song. I’ve been feeling a lot of African artists lately. Black music is only dead here in America. Overseas, brothers and sisters are still making real music.

This is an artist I just recently got into. His name is Keziah Jones and he’s Nigerian. This song right here is awesome and one of my favorites of his:

      • Aquagranny911

        Thank you for this share.

        • itgurl_29

          You’re welcome, AG.

Michelle Obama Talks Black History, the ‘Let’s Move’ Campaign and Her First Kiss on the TJMS

First Lady Michelle Obama spoke with Tom and Sybil today about her “Let’s Move” campaign to end obesity and the important tradition of black history in her family.

“I just don’t want my kids to be shocked or stunned when they are confronted with racism or things that come up because of somebody else’s history. I want them to be prepared..” says the first lady.

Read full transcript of the interview below.

Tom Joyner: Hey, everybody! The First Lady on the phone!

MRS. OBAMA: Good morning! It’s the First Lady calling. How are you guys doing?

TOM JOYNER: Hey, Mrs. First Lady. How are you?

MRS. OBAMA: I am good. How is everything going there in the world? I can’t tell you — you’re just everywhere. So how is everything going everywhere?

TOM JOYNER: Everything is going good everywhere.

    MRS. OBAMA: Good.

TOM JOYNER: And thank you for the invitation to the Black History reception. That’s going to be Wednesday, but it’s kind of short notice as First Lady.

MRS. OBAMA: Yes, well, you know we had the Inauguration, and –

SYBIL WILKES: You all had other things to do.

MRS. OBAMA: Well, I mean, you all are creating black history. It’s one of these things where you don’t know if you’re going to win. (Laughter.) Kind of on hold — everything else that you normally do, you start thinking, okay, well, maybe they won’t want to do this. (Laughter.) So we’re going to get back on it and make sure that we have some really outstanding programs.

But we’ve got four more years to do some really good stuff. So in addition to creating black history, we are going to celebrate it and be creating more of it every single day.

Prosecutor Rebuked By Sotomayor For Racially Biased Comment Was Referred For Internal DOJ Review

In a Supreme Court filing Monday Justice Sonia Sotomayor shone a spotlight on the government’s mismanagement of a Texas drug case when she denounced the racially charged remarks of an assistant U.S. attorney as “an affront to the Constitution’s guarantee of equal protection of the laws.”

The lawyer’s conduct was referred to the Office of Professional Responsibility at the Justice Department, TPM has learned, but what actions were taken against the attorney for those remarks — if any — are unclear.[….]

Florida’s Welfare Drug Testing Law Struck Down by Federal Appeals Court

A federal appeals court today struck a blow to a 2011 Florida law requiring drug tests for all applicants to the state’s welfare program. The unanimous decision from the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals also applies to a nearly identical bill signed last year by Georgia Governor Nathan Deal.[….] “The simple fact of seeking public assistance does not deprive a TANF applicant of the same constitutional protection from unreasonable searches that all other citizens enjoy,” the court wrote in its ruling today.

The case was brought by the ACLU on behalf of Luis Lebron, a Navy veteran and college student who is raising his children alone while also caring for his aging mother. He applied for welfare assistance from the state of Florida but was barred from help when he refused to take the drug test.[….]

Google to Apple Gird for FTC-Led Mobile-Privacy Crackdown

[….] The U.S. Federal Trade Commission, which this month fined Path Inc., a social-networking site, $800,000 for unauthorized collection of user data, is investigating a rising number of mobile apps for privacy violations. California Attorney General Kamala Harris is stepping up scrutiny of app makers, and congressional lawmakers are planning legislation that would require programmers to bolster disclosure and data protection.[….]

The FTC fined W3 Innovations LLC $50,000 in 2011 for letting children publicly post personal information on message boards via apps like Emily’s Girl World.[….] More strictures are coming. The FTC’s revised Children’s Online Privacy Protection Rule, taking effect in July, will require app makers to get parental consent to collect information from children.[….]

Good on the FTC! But could I just say here that parents have some responsibility to really oversee what their kiddos are doing with the tech they have access to.

Food stamps for pets organization opens in New York

A new charity called Pet Food Stamps promises to help low-income families who are struggling to feed their pets. The program is based in New York but recently became open to anyone in the United States, ABC News reported. More than 45,000 pets have been signed up in two weeks. If a family’s application is approved, they receive pet food each month from a retailer for a six-month period.

But conservatives who don’t like food stamps can calm down: these so-called “food stamps” aren’t actually food stamps. “We’re not looking for government funding at this point,” Pet Food Stamps executive director Marc Okon told ABC.[….]

    Hagel Filibuster is Defeated

    by BooMan
Tue Feb 26th, 2013 at 01:26:26 PM EST

The time has come to drink Jennifer Rubin’s tears, as Chuck Hagel’s confirmation vote has cleared the cloture vote in the Senate and the stupid filibuster is finally broken. In the end, Hagel received 71 votes, which is more than he will get when it comes time for the actual vote on confirmation. It’s interesting to look at the roll call because it reveals a bit about how Republicans view the Senate and it’s role in advising and consenting to the president about his cabinet. For example, some relatively moderate Republicans, like Ohio’s Rob Portman and Illinois’ Mark Kirk, voted to uphold the filibuster, while Jeff Sessions and Richard Shelby of Alabama, and Tom Coburn of Oklahoma did not. It seems that the newer members (Sen. Jeff Flake of Arizona excepted) were more likely to be obstinate.
The same thing could be seen when the Democrats attempted to amend the filibuster rule. It was long-serving members like Carl Levin, Max Baucus, and Barbara Boxer who were the most skittish about changing the traditional way of doing business, while almost all of the Democrats elected since 2006 were in favor of reform.

Another interesting feature of this cloture vote is that the neo-cons mostly voted for it. That includes John McCain, Lindsey Graham, and their new sidekick Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire. For all their bitching about Hagel, they didn’t want to create the precedent that Defense nominees could not be afforded an up or down vote.

Anyway, J-Rube’s tears taste like honey nectar.

    • Jennifer Rubin says, “If Hillary had won she would have picked someone better than that mean old Chuck Hagel. So there! And she is too running in 2016. So there again! Nyahhhhh!”

All of this when The Senate knew exactly that they were going to do this a week and a half ago. Oh yeah it’s broken.

      • Miranda

In all seriousness, after seeing Rubin on msnbc once…I really believe she is in dire need of mental health services. Ann Coulter andLaura Ingraham are about dollars, they are solid hustlers. They got the game on lock. They know to keep their hair the right blonde shade, wear just the right slit in their skirts and throw their heads back and know how to be sufficiently outraged in order to pimp their next book….Those bitches are full on pimps.

But poor Rubin and Malkin trying hard to get in that club and are actually going insane because they can’t break through. They can’t seem to grasp that no matter how completely foolish they act, they don’t have the right look and only thin blonde women get to have that air of superiority for right wingers. Its really stunning to watch. Word for word, Rubin and Malkin actually beat Coulter and Ingraham in sheer crazy rhetoric – but only Coulter and Ingraham got the goods to package that shit to sell to their dummy consumers of all things right wing.

        Really fascinates me.

        • I don’t think they understand that due to ethnicity they are never going to get into the club. Typing away at their little keyboards? Fine. No real high profile there. But breaking into the mainstream (I mean the right wing mainstream) with the approval of their audience? No way no how.

Malkin has gone out of her way to show she’s one of them. They in turn have let her no that she is not. The day she embraces something progressive no matter how slight is the day she will feel the full racial furor of the people she is trying so hard to get chummy with.

          • Miranda

Malkin has done everything but bleach her hair which I believe is coming very soon. She wants so bad to have blue eyes and blonde hair, you can just watch her and see how much she hates herself.

        • Worldwatcher7

Never thought of that before, but it’s so true! Seems like there’s colorism for RWNJs too.

Not-Racist Threatens to Kill Black Legislator

    by Steven D
Tue Feb 26th, 2013 at 02:29:10 PM EST

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Man sends emails containing racial slurs and threatening violence to African American legislator as well as President Obama. Man is arrested. Man claims that despite said emails, he is not a racist.

Franklin Glenn Sain was arrested on Feb. 22 on suspicion of harassing state Rep. Rhonda Fields (D) and unlawfully attempting to influence a public official.
Sain admitted to using racial and sexual slurs against Fields in a series of emails dated between Feb. 13 and Feb. 15. is also believed to have sent an unsigned letter to her office threatening “Death to both” her and her daughter, as well as the message, “I keep my 30 Round Magazines There Will Be Blood! I’m Coming For You!”

One of Sain’s emails, sent on Feb. 15, said of Fields and fellow state Rep. Beth McCann (D), “Hopefully somebody Gifords [sic] both of your asses with a gun,” an apparent reference to former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-AZ), who was shot in the head in a public attack. Giffords survived, but the mass shooting resulted in the deaths of six people.

Rep. Fields canceled a Town Hall Meeting over concerns about her safety and the safety of her constituents prior to Mr. Sain’s arrest. And though Sain admitted using racial slurs against both Fields and the President, he was adamant that he was not a racist. He was only expressing his opinion regarding her support for new gun control legislation, that’s all.

    • Alma98

Put his ass under the jail. And you notice they always threaten sexual harm towards woc too. I think that a lot of the FLOTUS hate fro white men is sexually motivated. They always talk about her body especially her backside.

    • conlakappa

It is so important to emphasize one’s non-racism while perpetrating acts using racist language. /eyeroll

It made me giggle at the memory of being on a Saturday phone bank with the young niece and nephew of our team lead and a couple of their friends. The little blonde next to me, upon finishing a call with, “Oh, okay, sir.” She then dryly said, “He says he’s voting for Tim Kaine. He’s not voting for Obama but not because he’s racist!” She then rolled her eyes. I think this girl was maybe 16 but she’d figured it out.

No CPAC Invite for Christie Because of ‘Limited Future’ in Republican Party

New Jersey governor Chris Christie was not invited to address the Conservative Political Action Conference because of his position on gun control, according to a source familiar with CPAC’s internal deliberations who requested anonymity to speak freely.

Christie has a “limited future” in the national Republican party given his position on gun control, the source tells National Review Online. As a result, the CPAC insider says, the focus of this year’s conference, “the future of conservatism,” made Christie a bad fit.

Christie, the source adds, is simply not a conservative in the eyes of organizers.

    • So let me get this straight. Fat Boy-Ar-Dee is the right wing dream. A ‘severely conservative” governor of a blue state and he has a 74% approval rating there, and they’re pissing over his stance on gun control?

Drug-testing of welfare applicants violates Constitution

Today, a three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals voted unanimously to bar the state of Florida from forcing welfare applicants to undergo drug testing.

    As the judges found:

“… the State failed to offer any factual support or to present any empirical evidence of a “concrete danger” of illegal drug use within Florida’s TANF population. The evidence in this record does not suggest that the population of TANF recipients engages in illegal drug use or that they misappropriate government funds for drugs at the expense of their own and their children’s basic subsistence. The State has presented no evidence that simply because an applicant for TANF benefits is having financial problems, he is also drug-addicted or prone to fraudulent and neglectful behavior.”

Exactly right. The state failed to offer “any factual support or to present any empirical evidence,” because no such evidence exists. As the judges went on to note, “there is nothing inherent to the condition of being impoverished that supports the conclusion that there is a “concrete danger” that impoverished individuals are prone to drug use.”

Nothing, that is, except deeply cherished stereotypes and a penchant for bashing poor people.

Welcome to the first installment of You Were Wrong, a new feature in which we ensure that pundits receive credit for their failed predictions.

Despite some unhelpful comments about gays and Israel and one of the worst confirmation hearings in memory, Chuck Hagel’s nomination as secretary of Defense easily achieved clouture this afternoon by a vote of 71 to 27, and he will be officially approved by the Senate later today.

Let’s take a look at who was wrong about Hagel’s nomination.

That’s gonna be an easy column to fill every week. With as much material as there is from both the left and right pundunces, that can be a daily column.

Ingraham: Obama abusing the press like ‘battered’ women and prostitutes
    By David Edwards
    Tuesday, February 26, 2013 11:22 EST

Conservative radio host Laura Ingraham on Tuesday accused President Barack Obama of abusing members of the media like “battered” women and prostitutes, who he had a one-night stand with and left them because “he got what he wanted.”

…“It’s like the battered press syndrome,” Ingraham opined. “These people are so in love — many of them, not all of them — so in love that, like, ‘Oh, he’s telling me to leave? I guess that means he loves me.’ I mean, at some point — the battered press syndrome — you have to shake them from this and say, ‘You guys have been used and played and manipulated.’”

“Should we tell them, he’s just not that into you?” Camerota asked.

“Well, he used them,” Ingraham explained. “It’s like the one-night stand that lasted for four years. He got re-elected, he got what he wanted. ‘So, sweetheart, I’ll leave your payment on the table and I’m gone.’ I’m sorry, but it’s embarrassing.”

This round of stupidity is brought to you by the repbulican party, the clowns who used a prostitute as a “reporter” (re: Jeff Gannon), and talk about “legitimate rape”, who claim women can only get pregnant when they enjoy the rape.

It’s also the political party that wants to legalize rape, by voting against VAWA.

Sounds like she speaks from experience.

        Or wishful thinking lol.

It always comes down to sexual metaphors with these sad lonely women. Poor Laura, like all the rest of the haters, wants to screw the President. Period. This old dried up hoe can’t go a day without some catty comment about Mrs. Obama. Barack Obama wouldn’t give her tired ass the time of day and she knows it.

I think it’s hilarious and I’m sure if POTUS and FLOTUS even knew who these losers were, they’d be laughing too.

        “wants to screw the President.”

My immediate thought. And while the women want to bed him, Boehner’s thinking about PBO’s balls. Lord have mercy, do these people not read their beloved Holy Bibles where it says to lust is a sin, or do they just like to beat everybody over the head with the Good Book?

    – — — Civil Rights Lawyer Michelle Alexander Speaks Against Mass Incarceration: the “New Jim Crow”– – –:>) – —

    – — — Michelle Alexander, a civil rights lawyer who gained national renown after publishing the book “The New Jim Crow,” spoke to students and faculty at the Yale Divinity School Monday afternoon about the phenomenon of mass incarceration in the United States, which she described as a legalized form of racial discrimination. Because African-Americans make up a large percentage of America’s prison population, Alexander said millions of African-Americans nationwide are deprived of basic human rights to housing and employment, adding that the prisoners have fallen victim to the kind of racial discrimination that existed at the time of Jim Crow.

    – —- -“We have not ended racial caste in America, we have merely redesigned it,” she said. “This is a system that has literally turned back the clock on racial progress in the U.S.”- – [THINK- -RE-THUCKERS!!!]

    – —She said the government’s approach to helping American black communities, which often face economic challenges, has involved targeting the African-American population with “police and prisons” rather than implementing economic stimulus systems, creating bailout programs, or investing in schools and job training.– —

    – — -“Children are now shuttled from low-funded schools to very high-funded, high-tech prisons,” Alexander said.

    – — –8 Inspiring Things That Happened Since Trayvon Martin Was Tragically Killed One Year Ago Today– – –

    – — — —One year ago today, Trayvon Martin — an unarmed 17-year-old boy on his way home from 7-11 — was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. The murder trial is scheduled to begin this June. A separate hearing may be held in April to determine whether Florida’s controversial “Stand Your Ground” law gives Zimmerman immunity.

While nothing can make up for the events of February 26, 2012, many people have responded to the tragedy with compassion, courage and strength. Here are some of the most inspiring things that have happened over the last year.

    1. 192 colleagues of Trayvon Martin’s mother donated 1,362 hours of their vacation time so she could grieve.
    2. Sanford, Florida has a new police chief who has pledged to finally address “long-standing racial tensions between the police department and the African-American community.”
    3. Dozens of major companies ended their support for ALEC, the right-wing group who championed “Stand Your Ground” laws.
    4. Thousands of people peacefully gathered in Sanford, Florida to demand justice for Trayvon Martin.
    5. A United States Congressman went on the floor of the House of Representatives in a hoodie to show solidarity with Trayvon.

    – — –The Senate Finance Committee has given Jack Lew its stamp of approval, pushing forward his semi-contentious nomination as secretary of the Treasury by a 19-5 vote, reports Politico. Max Baucus, the panel’s Democrat chairman, said ahead of the vote that Lew had answered all questions “in a thorough and fully transparent manner” and had undergone a “thorough review.” “Though I would have chosen a different person for this particular post, I intend to defer to President Obama with regard to the Lew nomination,” said the committee’s top Republican, Orrin Hatch. Lew’s nomination now heads to the full Senate; he would succeed Tim Geithner.

And for the first time, Friends of Hamas has secured one of its members in a Cabinet Position! Woo-hoo!!

    Chuck Hagel confirmed!

    • LOL!! That makes two confirmed Muslims in the White House.

    • nathkatun7

GOP should be held accountable for the money and Senate time wasted on the frivolous filibuster of Chuck Hagel to be SoD! The vote taken today could have been taken 10 days ago. Absolutely nothing changed, in the past 10 days, about Chuck Hagel, other than the discovery that Ted Cruz and Jim Inhoffe lied about the existence of the nonexistent organization called “Friends of Hamas.”
