    He’s exactly right:

    @TheScottFinley
A friend of mine who is conservative says that too much control of the GOP agenda by a few w/media control (i.e Fox) is killing them.

    @TheScottFinley
Just as we on the left fight the same from our media. We have those on our side who try to do the same shit.

Exclusive: Lee Atwater’s Infamous 1981 Interview on the Southern Strategy
    Rick Perlstein
    November 13, 2012

It has become, for liberals and leftists enraged by the way Republicans never suffer the consequences for turning electoral politics into a cesspool, a kind of smoking gun. The late, legendarily brutal campaign consultant Lee Atwater explains how Republicans can win the vote of racists without sounding racist themselves:

You start out in 1954 by saying, “Nigger, nigger, nigger.” By 1968 you can’t say “nigger”—that hurts you, backfires. So you say stuff like, uh, forced busing, states’ rights, and all that stuff, and you’re getting so abstract. Now, you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is, blacks get hurt worse than whites…. “We want to cut this,” is much more abstract than even the busing thing, uh, and a hell of a lot more abstract than “Nigger, nigger.”

Now, the same indefatigable researcher who brought us Mitt Romney’s “47 percent” remarks, James Carter IV, has dug up the entire forty-two minute interview from which that quote derives. Here, The Nation publishes it in its entirety for the very first time.

    http://www.thenation.com/article/170841/exclusive-lee-atwaters-infamous-1981-interview-southern-strategy#

    • GN

Wow; one of the comments there is blowing my mind:

      DoremusJessup20:
Earlier this year when Romney was running his welfare ads I saw David Gergen pontificating on CNN that he didn’t believe the ads were racially motivated. I started hounding him on twitter until he finally replied that he was a close personal friend of Lee Atwater but still wouldn’t acknowledge that the welfare ads were an extension of Atwater’s southern strategy.

If I’m not mistaken Team Romney finally dropped the ads after Ron Fournier called them out in his National Journal article.

The beltway media is beyond description at this point.

      • MsKitty

Somehow I am not surprised about Gergen and Atwater at all. The Beltway crew may come across as adversaries on TV, but once the camera is off they shake hands and discuss where they’re going for happy hour. It’s all very incestuous.

        • conlakappa

Gergen is and always has been R. He was just considered one of the reasonable ones and that seemed solely grounded in him working for Bill Clinton.

      • Camille

David Gergen is one of the worst. A very sly, horrid man who pretends to be an honorable intellectual.

I will never forget what he did during the debate between Scott Brown and Martha Coakley.

He and Brown had obviously rehearsed some really contrived stuff:

Davide Gergen: Sir are you saying that you will sit in Ted Kennedy’s seat and vote against Health Care reform?

Scott Brown: With all due respect, it is not Ted Kennedy’s seat but the people’s seat.

        Ugh.

General demoted for lavish travel, spending

WASHINGTON (AP) — A senior U.S. official says Defense Secretary Leon Panetta has demoted the former head of U.S. Africa Command who was accused of spending thousands of dollars on lavish travel and other unauthorized expenses.

The official says Panetta stripped Gen. William “Kip” Ward of a star, which means that he will now retire as a three-star lieutenant general despite some arguments against the demotion. Ward will also repay the government $82,000.

I got news for Progressives — Van Jones and the rest

SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! You ain’t getting shit the 2nd term

You did nothing to get the President re-elected, throughout the last 4 years wer had to hear you whine. Well the silent majority has spoken including all those POC [you know the base]!!

So fuck off!!! We are done. You were not OFA, DNC or Union.

So fuck you and your opinions.

I thought you were done with Obama and he sold you out and the rest… Watch ain’t nobody listening no more…. go draw a land in the sand in your ass.

    • Miranda

Van Jones was on NPR yesterday claiming Occupy was the reason for the great youth turnout. SMH

      • GN

        omg.

      • aleth

Wait he means the black youth which were the ones who turned out the most — I didn’t see no occupy folk voting… majority did not vote

      • Admiral_Komack

Van Jones should occupy a rubber room, dressed in a blazer with wrap-around-sleeves.

        • Sophie Amrain

A ridiculously overblown comment. Your fury has a very teabagger feel to it. Can’t we discuss different points of view? I did not follow Van Jones recently, but heard him speak a year ago – he was completely non emo prog and a serious voice, IMHO.

          • AxelFoley

We got a new one, ya’ll. And I didn’t know trolls came in female form either.

          • Aquagranny911

Not really a troll, Axe just maybe misinformed. She posts at TPV sometimes.

          • Alma98

            Thanks AG.

          • AxelFoley

            I gotcha, AG.

          • GN

Sophie, I know you from tpv and respectfully disagree. Van Jones was indeed at one point a more serious and measured voice but IMO he’s fallen off.

          • Ebogan63

When Van tells me what ever happened to green jobs, then I will be interested in what he has to say, and calling Admiral a teabagger is really beyond the pale and typical of emoprog cant. Sorry you really have to have a roomful of seats with that. People like Van talking that distorted nonsense get put on front street and blast ave round these parts.

      • Ebogan63

He really needs to stop gettin’ high on his own supply.

      • Daltex82

Wait, I thought those occupy people weren’t going to vote, were not going to register people to vote, didn’t even talk about voting and now President Obama’s victory is somehow because of their work?? Dude if you don’t sit yo’ ass down somewhere.

        • AxelFoley

BAM! That’s right, they did say that. They did say they weren’t gonna vote and other stupid shit like that.

And Van want us to believe they’re the reason PBO was re-elected?

          Child, please.

        • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Thank you! Van really needs to stop. OWS was a FAILURE while OFA, which EmoProgs/PLs tried to villanize, was a huge success and it hurts their soul.

        • Aquagranny911

Occupy can bite the big cactus as far as I’m concerned when some of that bunch came to Tucson we talked to them about registering voters & their response was:

“We aren’t interested in voting” Basic bunch of screaming, drumming, ignorant, privileged emus!

          • Aquagranny911

And I will add when they disrespected John Lewis that sent my blood boiling and into orbit!

      • AxelFoley

        lolwut?

        Occupy ain’t accomplished shit.

Damn, I can’t do nothing but laugh.

Hol’ up–matter fact, didn’t Occupy basically tell Van to go jump in the lake?

      • http://oldhollywood.net/ woody45

Who? Oh yeah those yuppies who took a vacation and decided to pollute Democratic cities by doing nothing and pretending they were actualy accomplishing something.

Enjoy obscurity Van. You’ve earned it just like OWS.

      • Scopedog

I wish I could laugh at this, but I can’t.

Besides, I clearly remember many of those involved in Occupy being quite adamant that they were NOT going to vote, and being told by luminaries like Michael Moore that voting was a useless exercise.

Youth did turn out–but I’ll bet that Occupy had nothing to do with it.

    • Sophie Amrain

Van Jones is a progressive, and not of the professional sort. Quite unlike the firebagger crowd.

      • AxelFoley

LOL, sure. Lay down with dogs, yadda, yadda, yadda…

        • Alma98

Who the hell is this, are we being infested by dkos trolls?

    • Alma98

It’s always that same number 27 to 29% that blames PBO, the teabaggers.

      • 7thangel

Pat Robertson Excuses Petraeus: ‘Here’s a Good-Looking Lady Throwing Herself at Him’
Submitted by Brian Tashman on Tuesday, 11/13/2012 12:15 pm

Yesterday on the 700 Club, televangelist Pat Robertson seemed to describe CIA Director David Petraeus as the real victim of the growing sex scandal involving him and his biographer, Paula Broadwell. He described Broadwell as an “extremely good-looking woman” who is a “marathon runner, she’d run Iron Man triathlons and so she’s out running with him and writing a biography,” and Petraeus simply couldn’t help himself: “The man’s off in a foreign land and he’s lonely and here’s a good-looking lady throwing herself at him. He’s a man.”

Wait, you think some of Pat’s side action is still alive?! But, yeah, I guess the woman threw herself at the general when he was naked/had his pants down. Lawsy knows hw the other woman lured the general.

    • Kadijo

So GOP Mrs must expect this from supposedly christian men?

    • Admiral_Komack

They’ve been doing this since this affair started.

Petraeus is a fucking hound dog who got busted because two sluts wanted dibs.

    • Daltex82

Pat is going to hit the bottom of Hell so hard it’s going to leave an indentation.

    • AxelFoley

That old muthafucka–if it was PBO who got caught with some woman who wasn’t his wife, ol’ Pat and the rest of them would be calling for impeachment.

Gen. John Allen also helped Jill Kelley’s sister during custody battle
By GEOFF EARLE, DC Bureau Chief
    Last Updated: 11:41 AM, November 13, 2012

WASHINGTON — Both Gen. David Petraeus and Gen. John Allen intervened in the same nasty child custody battle involving Natalie Khawam, the “psychologically unstable” twin sister of Jill Kelley, whose bombshell claims of being threatened by Petraeus’ lover led to the top spy’s resignation last week, the Post has learned.

Allen, the four-star general top commander in Afghanistan, was revealed last night to have exchanged thousands of pages of of emails with Kelley, who went to the feds after receiving threatening e-mails from Paula Broadwell, the married mistress of Petraeus.

Imagine a mother mourning the loss of her son in Afghanistan reading this crap. Did these people EVER have their minds on the war?

      • Tafr

This is why I find this entire mess utterly disgusting. Not only were they not thinking about these wars they were playing politics with their power. All those in uniform need to be knocked down in rank. Even if they are knocked down in rank they will still get a nice pension which they are not worthy of. Just disgraceful and disgusting.

    • AxelFoley

I laugh when someone says the name of Patraeus’ other jumpoff because if I’m not mistaken, Jill Kelly (without the second e) is the name of a porn star. So everytime I hear Jill Kelley, my mind goes to the gutter.

      But ya’ll know I’m a freak like that. ;)

    Behind Petraeus’s Resignation
    November 10, 2012

Exclusive: The resignation of CIA Director David Petraeus over an extramarital affair marks a stunning reversal for the longtime media darling. But some in President Obama’s inner circle are not displeased the neocon-friendly ex-general is gone, reports Robert Parry.

The messy departure of CIA Director David Petraeus over an extramarital affair removes the last high-ranking neoconservative holdover from George W. Bush’s administration and gives the reelected President Barack Obama more maneuvering room to negotiate a settlement over Iran’s nuclear program.

BEHIND OBAMA’S BACK: As Bob Woodward reported in his book, Obama’s Wars, it was Bush’s old team that made sure Obama was given no option other than to escalate troop levels in Afghanistan substantially. The Bush holdovers also lobbied for the troop increase behind Obama’s back.

According to Woodward’s book, Gates, Petraeus and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman, Adm. Mike Mullen, refused to even prepare an early-exit option that Obama had requested. Instead, they offered up only plans for their desired escalation of about 40,000 troops.

I really feel that PBO wanted a last way of getting as many leader of Alquada in AFG as much as possible. So giving them the extra troops for a surge was a way of getting special forces to do that.

      • qosine

I have to agree here. PBO said he was against “dumb wars,” and planned to end Iraq and surge Afghanistan, since Al Q was the original, necessary focus. Got Bin Laden, decimating AL q w/drones, and creating conditions in that area in best interest of national security + give people chance to emerge into better economy, while leaving them to self-govern. JMHO. Bernstein always undercutting PBO, like these generals can hold the CIC hostage. He’s a conservative who just doesn’t like neo-cons. Besides he’s been living off of Watergate for 40 years. JMHO

      Camille was spot-on.

    • Worldwatcher7

Sure, the neocons were undoubtedly plotting behind PBO’s back, but I don’t buy Woodward’s narrative that they were successfully manipulating him behind the scene. Candidate Obama was completely up front about wanting to escalate troop levels in Afghanistan before his 2008 victory.

In my book, Bob Woodward belongs on the bitter has-been pile with Tom Brokaw.

Remember that Desiree Rogers/Black Elite gossip thread on LSA? Well, it’s back with more tea, and they’re discussing Cornflake’s bitchassness. One of the posters said Cornel was paid by Grover Norquist to call out PBO. I wouldn’t be surprised but still, I’d like to see some receipts/transcripts to verify.

    • goldenstar

You really think that he would accept $$ from Norquist?

      • Worldwatcher7

He would justify it by saying he had to take the devil’s money to do the Lord’s work.

      • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Anything’s possible, especially with Tavis whispering in his ear.

        • GN

Don’t the firebaggers already have a semi-alliance with Norquist to audit the fed? Hamsher definitely was working with the teaparties to kill HCR (chipsticks posted an expose in which a teabagger was caught on tape admitting to working with Baby Jane). Heck yes I believe that West would work with Norquist. I want to see proof before spreading the word, but the scenario is definitely possible.

          • http://pragmaticobotsunite.blogspot.com/ Sepia

Exactly! Plus, he has been silent about Tavis’ nefarious dealings with Wells Fargo.

          • Aquagranny911

Hamsher was up to her neck with that & GiGi’s nasty little fingers were there, too. Deaniac wrote about this.

I don’t know about West but he seems like a real opportunist who would not be above doing Norquist dirty work.

West & Tavis both lost me completely when they started spewing caca on PBO. So I would put nothing past either one of them.

          • conlakappa

It is always why none of these no-account fools will ever run for public office–they would not get the same consideration of the Romney Rule and would have to show their taxes/for whom they perform work. Norquist is a Poopie Head.

No, I am not losing it (completely) Norquist accused Obama of treating Romney “like a poopie head.”

This resulted in SUCH a cathartic laugh :) So, thank you, Grovie?

    Great news:

Support For Repealing Obamacare Plunges To An All-Time Low

As a new Kaiser Family Foundation poll reports, the majority of Americans don’t support repealing Obamacare. In fact, after the presidential election, the number of Americans advocating for a full repeal of the health reform law dropped to an all-time low at just 33 percent — compared to nearly half of Americans who would rather keep the law in place…

A Message to Paul Krugman and the Prognosticating Left: Obama Won.

Let me be clear to all the political prognosticators on the Left: The President won re-election by ignoring your calls for ideological warfare, and he owes you nothing. This election was a resounding victory. But it was a resounding victory for the President, for the values that guide him, and for the governing approach he has taken – i.e. pragmatism. It was not a victory for ideological warfare, because frankly, Mitt Romney was a far better ideological warrior than President Obama.

I told my sister to tell a friend of ours who is in the military “Make sure his soldier stays in the barracks!”

  • RinaX

So my mother wants to go the Inauguration in January. I was wondering, what are the best areas to stay as far as hotels? I’ve already emailed Corrine Brown for tickets (long shot).

    • isonprize

You may need a ‘hook up’ for a hotel room. Room are either sold out or the rates for what is left has skyrocketed. I’m hearing upwards of $1000 a night.

      • RinaX

Yeah, I was checking out a few, and yeesh. We might have to chill and watch it on TV again. I do want to make it to Washington before his term is up, though.

        • Aquagranny911

I don’t know where you live but my Sis suggested we try to make it a “day trip” but we are old, live in AZ, & she is just a little loco sometimes.

          • Alma98

            LOL!

      • MsKitty

Sad, but true. I know some folks who were looking at rooms about 6 months ago and the inventory was tight even then.

      • GN

Yup, I got a couple of marginal rooms (but great location) for twice what they’re worth in September, and that hotel has since sold out, so I can just imagine that rates have gone up and availability has gone down since then.

        • conlakappa

But with the enthusiasm gap and all?!

    • Aquagranny911

You might consider this. Some private homes may be renting out rooms or their apartments. There is an online source for this but I can’t remember the name. Don’t know if you want to do something like that but it is a thought.

      • RinaX

We talked more, and both of us realized that we will most likely be a little short on expendable funds after Christmas for a bit, so not the best time to plan a trip. It would have helped if she’d expressed interest a few months ago, could have planned for it. I know I don’t want to drive all the way there, back, and have to go to work in the morning (from Fla) so that’s out.

        Thanks, all.

        • conlakappa

Tickets to visit the White House are obtained through the offices of your members of Congress. Contact Brown’s office as well as your senators for a date in the spring.

The bogus, baseless case against Susan Rice
    By Steve Benen
    Tue Nov 13, 2012 2:24 PM EST.

We talked earlier about potential changes in President Obama’s cabinet, and the multiple reports that he wants to nominate U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice to replace Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. Republicans, for strikingly inane reasons, aren’t impressed.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) has taken the lead in criticizing Rice, making vague accusations about her comments the week of the Benghazi attack. Today, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) joined him, characterizing Rice’s actions as “beyond belief.”

Actually, what’s beyond belief is this ridiculous smear campaign. Kevin Drum had a terrific piece on this.

The Republican freakout over Benghazi has been shameful, and their insane scapegoating of Rice’s appearances on the Sunday chat shows a week after the attacks has been doubly so. Republicans — aided and abetted at times by reports in the mainstream media — decided to pretend that Rice had blamed the Benghazi attack entirely on a YouTube video, which they took as dark evidence of a coverup designed to protect Obama. But the truth is that Rice flatly did nothing wrong, a point that bears repeating. She did nothing wrong. [...]

Graham and the rest of the Republican caucus appear to still be in election season attack dog mode, and it’s time for this to stop. They have every right to investigate Benghazi, which might very well have been handled poorly in some respects and which might have been a case of poor anticipation of an attack that should have been expected. But Rice’s conduct was fine. She very carefully, and very professionally, passed along what was, at the time, the considered judgment of the intelligence community.

      Yes.

  • GN

Wow; the following is a *beautiful* humbling account from a TOD lurker, who literally traveled from Germany (!) to help with the elections, and who encountered British and Scandinavian volunteers who had done the same thing:

It´s exactly one week ago that PBO was reelected and it´s 3 days ago that I returned to Germany from a short “election-trip” to the States. I just had to be there, I just had to do something- at least I wanted to try. That´s why I took some days off, booked a flight to Chicago and contacted the local Obama campaign bureau.

I just asked, if they could need some help for example canvassing in Wisconsin or Iowa. I was a bit reluctant because I thought somehow ..it´s not my affair, it´s not my election, I´m just a crazy foreigner – though it all ment so much to me. And I was just overwhelmed how open-minded and how friendly everybody was. They said of course I´m welcome and they appreciate my help.

I took part in weekend trips to Iowa on Saturday and Sunday – and was impressed, how many people boarded the bus at 7 in the morning to go to Muscatine and Dubuque knocking on doors. There was a man who told me, that he had never done this before but now he was getting nervous. And there was an old woman with a rolling walker who wanted to do something, too. And I was deeply touched by an old man who said, that he had some problems, because he needed to go to the toilet quite often – and this was a problem, while he was out knocking on doors. Fortunately there was a hospital nearby so he could get some relief. I was deeply impressed, that this man in spite of his problems just had this inner voice that told him, that he had to go out and get involved! So much enthusiasm! And even while knocking on doors myself and talking to people I never had the feeling of being an outsider, although my English is not perfect and with an accent.

And of course I hesitated to tell my “personal” story, when I met undecided voters – well that didn´t happen too often, anway. In Dubuque finally I met a young British guy who had been volunteering for 4 or 5 weeks for the Obama campaign , organizing all there was to do. And he told me, that the day before there were also some people from Scandinavia helping. So I was not the only crazy person! I have never been campaigning for any politician, and I probably will never do that again, neither in Germany nor in the United States. But this was a once in a lifteime experience – and I did it, because I just couldn´t stand the idea, that the fist black President was elected off not even 4 years after his inauguration – not after all he had done , not after he has worked off his ass (sorry)! No !

And the American President is the leader of the free world and important for the whole world. And peronally for me .. he is a constant source of inspiration, with his decency and his attitude … and .. well you know. Well after all..it was a wonderful experience, I was able to witness election night in McCormick Place – as I got a ticket after the canvass-trips. I always thought, the moment, CNN would come out with the breaking news would be like … the decisive penalty in a soccer final.. but no. It was much deeper..and it took much longer, untill this big relief finally got to my soul.

But I will especially never forget these two days in Iowa – and all the people I met there. And though I´m not an American I really liked Obama’s words on election night that characterized the American people best: “What makes America exceptional are the bonds that hold together the most diverse nation on Earth — the belief that our destiny is shared; that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to one another, and to future generations..” and so on.

You don´t have to speak the language perfectly, you don´t even have to be an American, you are accepted anyway – that´s what I felt these days. I am very jealous on that fundamental philosophy – unfortunately we are far away from that in Germany ( but I promise to work on it). ..and I´m glad to keep your President as a source of inspiration for another 4 years .. and of course this blog as well.. I´m usually just lurking . So thank you all very much – and keep on going forward!

I’m trying to wrap my mind around the beauty of a human spirit which would travel here to help Americans like this (and *massive* respect to OFA for how easy you guys make it for anybody to jump in and help at any time). I know that it’s not unprecedented, but the enormity of last week’s accomplishment and how many diverse people are responsible for it is really hitting me. Really special time.

        • dannie22

well GN, the human spirit can be a beautiful thing. then again, if i thought the repub candidate might embroil my nation in world wars if he became president, i might fly to america and knock on a few doors too!
