    • rikyrah

      Hey Sag..

any comment about everyone and anyone coming out the woodwork for the JJJ seat?

      • sagittarius

        Hi, rikyrah!

Yeah…. I see Debbie Halvorson announced she will run again. Halvorson’s totals were a protest vote against Jackson…. when a good candidate starts to pick apart her voting record, particularly as it affects Black folk, she will be a non-factor.

I see Ald. Carrie Austin trying to be a queen maker – gul, sit down!

State Senator Kwame Raoul will not run.

I see they are still trying to dirty up Todd Stroger… he has the campaign infrastructure to win and he’s got a good percentage of black sympathy votes. He ain’t necessarily the sharpest pencil in the box, but the rules were changed in the IL Legislature to get him out of his position as Cook County Board President. THAT is what pisses folks off… if he was an eff-up, let the voters get rid of him. My brother voted AGAINST Pat Quinn for governor for this very reason.

Ald. Anthony Beale – no.. especially since it is alleged he got it in with Sandi Jackson.

Sandi – uh, no. She better concentrate on not getting indicted her damn self.

Anyone connected to current Cook Co. Bd President Toni Preckwinkle will not win – hell, Toni’s got big problems in the black community for her own re-election. She slated a candidate for Cook County Clerk against Dorothy Brown, and Dorothy whupped that ass.

        Anybody I missed?

        • rikyrah

It’s not like Todd was some bumpkin off the turnip truck. He had been in the state legislature, and an alderman before he got his Daddy’s position.

FACT: He balanced the budget without – shutting down hospitals…and without firing middle class public service workers. AND, he’s wasn’t down with the privatizing goverment bullshyt.

FACT: That damn tax was less than a frigging penny. LESS THAN A PENNY. I didn’t vote for Ms. Toni and will not in the future.

There is a 10 cent tax for Cook County …and CHICAGO GETS THE FIRST 7 CENTS…something she never said shyt about while running.

So, yes, I hope Todd gets in.

F’ all those mofos who ran him down.

And NOBODY with the last name of Jackson needs to run for that seat.

          • sagittarius

            Tell. it. rikyrah.

        • isonprize

Damn, Sag. You got the HOT tea. LOLOL

      • goldenstar

Also, what do you make of Kwame Raoul’s position that this is a black seat and that he’s trying to narrow the field of candidates?????

        • sagittarius

It is a black seat. There are only three “Black” seats in the 19 district IL congressional delegation. If Jan Schakowsky’s 9th CD can be designated the “Jewish” seat, then for damn sure the 1st, 2nd and 7th CDs can be designated the “Black” seats.

U.S. officials tell state to use same standards to grade charter schools

Federal education officials have denied Pennsylvania’s request to evaluate charter school achievement using more lenient criteria, saying they must be assessed by the same standard as traditional schools.[….] Critics said the formula artificially inflated charter schools’ performance for political reasons.[….]

[….] Under Pennsylvania law, every charter school is considered its own district. So by using the grade span methodology, about 59 percent of charters made AYP — a figure that supporters touted, comparing it with the 50 percent of traditional schools that hit the target. Yet only 37 percent of charters would have made AYP under the individual school method. Delisle ordered Pennsylvania to re-evaluate charter schools’ AYP status using that standard by the end of the fall semester.

Papa Johns About Face – Will Be Giving Healthcare To Employees After All

It appears Papa John’s has a new item on the menu: heaping plate of crow. CEO and founder John Schnatter now went on the record on the Huffington Post to defend himself by taking back his position presented earlier to his stockholders where he said: “We’re not supportive of Obamacare, like most businesses in our industry. But our business model and unit economics are about as ideal as you can get for a food company to absorb Obamacare.”

Now, Mr Schnatter is singing another tune, saying:

“Papa John’s, like most businesses, is still researching what the Affordable Care Act means to our operations. Regardless of the conclusion of our analysis, we will honor this law, as we do all laws, and continue to offer 100% of Papa John’s corporate employees and workers in company-owned stores health insurance as we have since the company was founded in 1984.”[….]

France will back Palestinian state status at UN

France signaled Tuesday it would vote in favor of Palestine being recognized as a non-member state at the UN General Assembly this week. The upcoming vote will make the highly symbolic decision about whether to recognize Palestine as a “state,” albeit one without membership at the United Nations.

“This Thursday or Friday, when the question is asked, France will vote yes,” said Laurent Fabius, France’s foreign minister, according to Reuters. He added, the yes vote was “out of a concern for coherency.”[….]

California Federal Court Home To First All-Female Bench |

The federal district court based out of Oakland, Calif. is the first major federal courthouse in which all the judges are female – both lifetime appointees and magistrates (who serve eight-year terms).

Among the six women on the Northern District of California are five women of color, one of whom is also the first out lesbian on the court, according to the Recorder. Another was a former black police officer who started her career as one of four women in a 700-person office, and another a former corporate lawyer who was the first Latina partner at her firm.[….]

So basically books and not much else yet. As soon as I finished my 7 days on, and I have my 7 off, I’ll start putting stuff on it then.

Opportunities for Minority Students in the Solar Industry

Solar industry jobs are increasing along with the rapidly expanding solar industry. As reported this month by the Solar Foundation’s National Solar Jobs Census, jobs in the industry are increasing by 13.2 percent annually, six times faster than the overall job market. This equates about 1 of every 230 new jobs in the US economy was created by the solar industry this past year.

As the nation’s demographics are shifting and now most children under the age of one are minorities, it is critical that we close the gap in the number of minorities who seek solar career opportunities. Women and minorities make up 70 percent of college students, but only 45 percent of undergraduate STEM degree holders.

This large pool of untapped talent is a great potential source of STEM professionals. The Energy Department’s Minority University Research Associates (MURA) Program seeks to address the gap by encouraging minority students to pursue careers in science and technology.[….]

The time for ACTION is NOW!

Last week, I wrote about the new website TheAction.org, a new organizing tool to help pass President Obama’s second term agenda. This weekend marks the first Day of Action using this organizing tool. The activities are designed to ensure that Congress passes a repeal of the Bush tax cuts on the wealthiest 2% of Americans while preserving the middle class tax cuts that actually help stimulate our economy by keeping money in the hands of those who will immediately put it back into the economy.

In Michigan, we have three events:[….]

Professional Left Sets Hair on Fire About Fictional Entitlement “Cuts”

You have to give it to the ideologue Professional Left about one thing: they are incredibly good at synchronized whining. Apparently, they all had their Thanksgiving turkey, mixed some w(h)ine and politics, and decided, “OMG we haven’t bashed the President for almost two weeks!” And so it began with Cyber Monday, they began in earnest their scaremongering campaign about how the president is about to strike a grand bargain with Republicans that raids Medicare and Medicaid, and possibly Social Security. Based on what? Any specific proposal? Nah. Based on the need to set everyone’s hair on fire, of course.[….]

Again and again, it has been the ideologue Left that has abandoned the middle class and the poor when the president has fought for them. They abandoned – no, openly opposed – the fight to get health care reform done. They opposed Wall Street Reform, because it wasn’t “good enough.” At the end of 2010, when the president was busy crafting a deal to protect the middle class tax breaks, unemployment benefits and creating a new tax cut for the working poor (payroll tax cut), these same usual suspects insisted that the president abandon the middle class in order to prove some sort of a weird point.[….]

How Obama Killed the Norquist Pledge

    Monday, November 26, 2012 |

Under the pressure of the fiscal cliff, Republicans are beginning to buckle. And the first casualty seems to be – drumrolls, please – the Grover Norquist pledge. I mean, when Republicans from blood-red states like Georgia and South Carolina start telling Grover Norquist to go suck a thumb, you know something palpable has changed in American politics. The one pledge that has come to define Republican governance – the “taxes = baaad” paradigm – is falling apart.

Why? Sure, it’s because President Obama won re-election and that fiscal cliff – the one that Republican set up for themselves – is coming crashing down on them at the end of the year. But how did we get here?

You see, the prevailing wisdom in the beltway is that we ended up in the bind of the fiscal cliff through Washington’s paralysis of governing. And that’s partially true. But that the paralysis is resulting today in Republicans abandoning their central economic philosophy wasn’t a given. In fact, it wouldn’t have happened were it not for the brilliant setup created by the president.

Too many people in the beltway seem to internalize an interesting case of cognitive dissonance about this president: that he is both a brilliant tactician who put together an unprecedented coalition to become the first Democrat to win a majority of the popular vote twice since FDR and that he’s a dumb negotiator who gives away football fields to opponents and “negotiates against himself.” Both things cannot be true, regardless of how much the beltway insists on both.

So what gives? Barack Obama is the most brilliant strategic mind of our time – perhaps since FDR. Anyone who believes that he did not figure out the Republican tactic of obstructing everything and being hell bent on robbing the public sector of all possible revenue within his first few months in office is a fool. He did figure it out. And when he figured it out, he set out to systematically destroy it. But being a strategic genius, he knew that it wasn’t going to be done in a day. In the first two years, he had sizeable (but by no means non-obstructable) Democratic majorities in the House and the Senate, and he needed to get the big policy agenda through: the largest economic recovery package in history, health care reform, Wall Street reform, equal pay for women, credit card reform, student loan reform, repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, keeping the safety net tight while the economy was still in upheaval.

    – -***sigh!!!*** – – –GOP Senator: If Immigrants Want A Path To Citizenship, They Can Just Marry Americans – –

    – — Lawmakers from both parties have expressed new interest in comprehensive immigration reform, including a path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants, after Latino voters overwhelmingly supported President Obama in the presidential election. But the bill introduced on Tuesday by retiring Republican Sens. Jon Kyl (AZ) and Kay Bailey Hutchison (TX), dubbed the ACHIEVE Act, is nothing more than a watered-down version of the bipartisan DREAM Act without a clear path to citizenship for those who would qualify under the measure.

Hutchison emphasized that the measure, which would require applicants to apply for three different visa programs over several years, does not offer a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. “It doesn’t allow them to cut in line in front of people who have come and abided by the rules of our laws today,” she said during a press conference. “It doesn’t keep them from applying under the rules today, but it doesn’t give them a special preference.”

    – –THIS: – – ->Kyl sought to dismiss the necessity of providing immigrants with a path to citizenship by suggesting that they should — unlawfully — marry U.S. citizens for immigration purposes:

    – — –Last week, the day after Thanksgiving ushered in the annual holiday shopping season. Many Americans partook of that bruising and borderline pathological retail ritual known as Black Friday, whereby millions of people invade chain stores at ungodly hours to grab discount stuff they probably don’t need. This was followed by the more civic-minded and measured Small Business Saturday, where consumers are encouraged to support local artisans, shops and outlets in order to buttress entrepreneurship in their local communities. And just yesterday, web surfers in offices all across America gave up their regular work tasks in search of the perfect Cyber Monday deal.

    – — SNIP – —

And suddenly that consummate gift idea materializes! What do you get for the favorite liberal in your world? Whether they simply seek to commemorate President Barack Obama’s November 2012 thrashing of his Republican opponent, or if they are (like me) always up for a little GOP schadenfreude, the answer has arrived: Mitt Romney collectibles! – –LOL!! – — –

According to a report this morning from ABC News, retailers ranging from airport gift shops to online operations to Black Friday stalwart Wal-Mart are offering steep discounts on remnants of Mitt Romney’s doomed candidacy. Great bargains abound, per writer Sarah Parnass, such as “Romney magnets and buttons below a dollar and a ‘Repeal & Replace’ t-shirt, referencing the Republican plan to oust President Obama’s health care law, for less than five bucks.”

Invert your martini glasses into syrup to coat the rims completely
Dip the rims in candy sprinkles to coat the syrup
    Set your glasses aside
Fill your martini shaker roughly 3/4 full with ice
Add the vanilla vodka and cranberry juice
Shake the mixture to thoroughly blend
Pour your mixture into two prepared martini glasses
Optional: Add 1/2 ounce of champagne or sparkling wine to finish off your martini (I prefer mine without the champagne, but my husband likes it with. You have a perfect excuse to have two because you’ll want to try it both ways!)

  • I’m currently watching the replay of the Soul Train awards. I do not care for the idea of Tyrese, Ginuwine, & Tank forming a group. They’re like a bootleg version of LSG. #cynical

Evening POU. Cg, just got done watching the last part. I rarely watch these shows but needed to see my Stevie. Without seeing the rest, I’m gonna be bold and insist he was the best thing on stage. Am I right? And what about all the PBO tribute….was that not awesome?

      • lamh36

Actually the whole show was really good. I actually watched the whole thing without recording it. New Edition was great!

if it comes on again, check it out

  • My aunt just sent me bootleg copies of the 50 Shades of Gray series. Anyone here read it? Should I even waste my time?

    • PBomb

I have heard that it was horrible. I read some excerpts of it and the parts I read were turrible.

Read the one star reviews on Amazon. they sum up the criticism of the book the best.

When I need a good laugh I head over to Amazon to read the shades of Grey one star reviews. When I am really feeling blue I read the Twilight series one star reviews, priceless.

        • PBomb

Exactly. Nothing like reading those 1 star reviews on books at Amazon. They are awesome!!

SMH….Lord, my prayers to this child’s parents – this is some more “stand your ground” madness in Florida Man accused of killing teen over loud musicCOBB COUNTY, Ga. — Police believe a Marietta teen was killed at a Florida gas station for playing loud music.

Jordan Davis, 17, was gunned down at a Jacksonville gas station Friday night. A family friend told Channel 2’s Craig Lucie the teen would split time between his mother’s home in Marietta and Jacksonville with his father.

Jacksonville police said Davis was with his friends when Michael Dunn, 45, pulled up near their car. Police said Dunn got into an argument with the group about the loud music they were playing. Then, Dunn fired eight to nine shots into the car, fatally wounding Davis, police said. more here http://www.ajc.com/news/news/local/man-accused-killing-teen-over-loud-music/nTGxX/

    NOW: – – – –Heeeeere’s MR. Harry – –DEFENDIN’ DR. RICE – -AGAIN. :>)-

    – – – Reid Defends Rice From Attacks ‘Unmoored From Facts And Reality’ – -:>) – –

    – – –Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s office issued a statement on Tuesday night defending U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice from GOP criticism for the explanations she gave on behalf of the Obama administration in the immediate aftermath of the attacks upon a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya earlier this year.

“The personal attacks against Ambassador Rice by certain Republican senators have been outrageous and utterly unmoored from facts and reality,” Reid said. “I am shocked that senators would continue these attacks even when the evidence – including disclosures from the intelligence community about the information she presented – have made it clear that the allegations against Ambassador Rice are baseless, and that she has done absolutely nothing wrong.”

    – — – -SNIP – –

    More from Reid’s statement:

“Ambassador Rice’s service as United States Ambassador to the United Nations has been impeccable. She has answered all questions raised in relation to the Benghazi attacks completely and repeatedly. The Senate committees of jurisdiction are in the midst of examining the events leading up to the Benghazi attacks, and I agree with those – including the ranking Republican members of both the Intelligence and Homeland Security committees – who have said we should let the committees do their work. – – ->There should be no place for such blatant partisanship in oversight of our nation’s intelligence community. – –

“The election is over. It is time to drop these partisan political games, and focus our attention on the real challenges facing us as a nation.”

    – – —EUR on the Scene: Actress Ruby Dee Celebrates 90th Birthday (Video) – –

    – —*“If you’re a member of the human race; if you don’t know Ruby Dee it’s shameful.”

That’s how award winning actress S. Epatha Merkerson, who gained fame on the long running TV series “Law and Order,” feels. She told me that in an exclusive interview at the 90th birthday celebration for Ruby Dee♥.

It was a grand affair earlier this month at the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture in Harlem. Hundreds of people, many of them celebrities, came out to honor Dee, who was born Ruby Ann Wallace in Cleveland, Ohio.

Dee, a phenomenal woman with that classy sultry voice, has enjoyed a career on stage, motion pictures, and TV that has spanned over seven decades.

The 1961 film “A Raisin in the Sun” that she co-starred with Sidney Poitier, among others, is still a fan and critics favorite. Her movie making gems are not a thing of the past.

In 2008 Dee received her first Academy Award nomination, in the supporting category, for her role as the mother of the gangster played by Denzel Washington in “American Gangster”.

She married Ossie Davis in 1948. This was her second time down the aisle. In 1941 she married blues singer Frankie Dee Brown, who reportedly would have been the only Black Munchkin in the “Wizard of Oz”, if the footage wasn’t cut. They divorced in 1945.

    – – -SNIP – —
Dee and Davis, recipients of the Presidential National Medal of Arts in 1995, were recognized not only for their stellar acting but also for their fearless activism.

    – – ->She later read a congratulatory birthday message from President Barack Obama.

    – – –It Gets Worse for Mitt Romney as He is Named the Least Influential Person of 2012 – –

    – – — —Apparently, Mitt Romney hasn’t hit rock bottom yet. Romney has gone from being one of only two men vying to be president to being named the least influential person of 2012 by GQ.

Mitt Romney beat out such luminaries as Amanda Bynes, Jerry Sandusky’s lawyer, Lance Armstrong, Madonna, and George Zimmerman to win the title of GQ’s Least Influential Person of 2012.

Here is how GQ described Romney, “Was anyone inspired by Mitt Romney? Did anyone vote enthusiastically for Mitt Romney? Of course not. Voting for Romney is like hooking up with the last single person at the bar at 4 a.m. The only successful thing he did this year was embody every black stand-up comedian’s impression of a white person.Thank God the election’s over. No more endless photos of Mitt staring winsomely off-camera with that attempted smile on his face. No more glaring campaign mishaps week after week after week. No more labored media efforts to make him look like anything other than Sheldon Adelson’s pampered money Dumpster.”

    – — – -SNIP- – —

Not really. Mitt Romney spent six years of his life running for president. In those six years can you name one original idea or policy proposal that he came up with? Just one. You can’t, because Mitt Romney spent nearly a decade planning and running for president without adding a single new idea to our national discourse. Some people called Romney an empty suit, but his problem was an empty mind. — —

    — —Three Arrested After Naked AIDS Protesters Take Over John Boehner’s Office – – –

    – – –Seven people entered House Speaker John Boehner’s office on Tuesday, stripped their clothes, and began chanting to protest anticipated budget cuts to HIV/AIDS programs if a deal is not reached to avoid the “fiscal cliff.” The protest ended with the arrest of three of the protesters, all women, for indecent exposure.

“We grabbed attention by illustrating the naked truth and by showing how people with AIDS have had, literally, all of the clothes off of their backs taken away by these guys in Congress,” one of the protesters, Jennifer Flynn, said.

Cassidy Gardner and Megan Mulholland, two community organizers for Queerocracy in New York City, were arrested, along with Flynn, who is a part of Health GAP in New York City.

“The reality is that these draconian budget cuts will actually result in the conservative loss of 600,000 people with AIDS’ lives around the world,” Flynn said moments before being arrested, referring to several federal programs aimed at fighting AIDS here and around the world. “We’re talking about killing 600,000 people around the world if we let these budget cuts go into effect. And that’s just one year.”
