After complaining to a local news station about not getting paid after Election Day, workers for Connecticut Senate candidate Linda McMahon’s campaign say they were given checks that bounced. One worker says he got a bad check and a condom.

“Checks have been mailed to campaign workers. Replacement checks were issued for those who did not want to wait for the mail,” campaign spokeswoman Kate Duffy told WTNH. ”The original checks were then voided once replacement checks were issued.” They plan to follow up with staffers who reported receiving bad checks.

But one staffer says she only got the mail check, which no longer works. Another says he was handed a check that bounced — along with something else.

“Basically [a campaign staffer] handed me a check with a condom in it, told me I was screwed,” Twaine Don Gomes told the station. “That’s the rudest gesture you can ever do to a person, it’s like spitting in a person’s face.”

I find this hysterical. Just like the Romney staffers standing outside the Boston Convention Ctr in the cold and thumbing for rides back to the hotel hoping the hotel hadn’t packed up their stuff and sat it out on the street since the credit cards were about as good as a confederate $2 bill.

    – – -CNN Confronts Walmart Spokesperson Over Retailer’s Low Wages, Poor Working Conditions – —

    – – – – -As Walmart workers across the country coordinate a Black Friday walkout in an effort to build awareness about the national retailer’s low wages and poor working conditions, the company is on a media offensive to downplay their associates’ concerns and reassure shoppers.

During an appearance on CNN Tuesday morning, Vice President of Communications David Tovar sought to brush aside the fact that Walmart is paying its associates salaries that are just slightly above the poverty line, even as the company reported a 9 percent increase in third-quarter net income, earning $3.63 billion. He insisted that the company has “got great associates” who are “going to do a great job for us this holiday season.”

But when host Carol Costello pressed Tovar on the growing wealth gap in America and Walmart’s role in insuring a robust middle class, he dodged the question, but not before suggesting that the store offers associates a discount to buy Walmart products (and invest their pay checks back into the company):

    WATCH: – — —

    – – -Walmart CEO Michael Duke has a total compensation of $18.1 million, and is the second highest paid executive in the Fortune 500. According to CNN Money, it would take more than 700 employees’ salaries to match his total compensation package. — –

    • Aquagranny911

I wish every Walmart employees would walk out on Friday! I know this probably won’t happen but I have been telling everyone I can to not shop at Walmart on Thursday night or all day Friday, as if there are invisible picket lines even at stores that did not strike. I know some people have limited choices & do their shopping at Walmart but for 48 hours they can keep their $ in their pockets & send these goatfiggers a strong message!

Walmart reminds me of the stories I heard from an aunt & uncle who were union organizers in the 1930’s. They worked mostly with miners who lived & worked in mine owned towns for whatever the owners wanted to pay. They OWNERS owned EVERYTHING, the houses people lived in & the stores where the people bought the food & other things they needed. The owners even ran the schools. The mine owners fought the unions with goons & thugs who beat the strikers and starved the families. It was brutal.

Walmart is the same even if they have not yet brought out the goons & thugs to terrorize the workers.

    Chris Christie’s other clean-up effort

    By Steve Benen
    Tue Nov 20, 2012 11:36 AM EST.

Two weeks ago, as New Jersey was still very much in the midst of a post-Sandy crisis, Fox News’ Rupert Murdoch insisted that Gov. Chris Christie (R) “re-declare” his support for Mitt Romney. The New York Times reports today that the governor took this quite seriously.

A few days after Hurricane Sandy shattered the shores of New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie picked up the phone to take on a different kind of recovery work: taming the Republican Party fury over his effusive embrace of President Obama.

On Nov. 3, Mr. Christie called Rupert Murdoch, the influential News Corporation chief and would-be kingmaker, who had warned in a biting post on Twitter that the governor might be responsible for Mr. Obama’s re-election.

Mr. Christie told Mr. Murdoch that amid the devastation, New Jersey needed friends, no matter their political party, according to people briefed on the discussion. But Mr. Murdoch was blunt: Mr. Christie risked looking like a spoiler unless he publicly affirmed his support for Mitt Romney, something the governor did the next day.

What GOP governors hope to accomplish on health care
    By Steve Benen
    Tue Nov 20, 2012 2:28 PM EST

Following up on an item from last week, a variety of governors are still making decisions on how (and whether) to create state-based health care exchanges under the Affordable Care Act. States that refuse invite the Obama administration to create exchanges for them.

The latest announcement came from Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin (R), who announced yesterday that her state would also refuse to create a health insurance exchange, leaving the job up to federal officials. Oklahoma is now the 17th state to make this decision, and that number may yet grow.

As a rule, when I cover this, I marvel at the irony: many far-right governors who claim to oppose federal control are making a conscious decision to invite more federal control. But let’s take the next step and consider why they’re doing it.

Some are eyeing higher office and have been warned that cooperating with the Obama administration on health care would ruin their careers. But Jonathan Cohn raises an even more salient point about the larger sabotage strategy.

The subsidies are in the form of tax credits. So Oklahoma officials and everybody else making this argument are essentially calling upon states to block their citizens from receiving federal tax breaks, worth as much as several thousand dollars per person. Aren’t conservatives and libertarians supposed to be the party that likes giving tax money back to the people?

Of course, Obamacare critics believe that, by blocking the subsidies, they’ll undermine the law’s effectiveness and eventually erode support to the point that people clamor for a conservative alternative.

    Avoiding Cliff Not That Important

    by BooMan
Tue Nov 20th, 2012 at 12:43:14 PM EST

I’m getting pretty bored with stories about the Fiscal Cliff. The administration can insist on what it wants and give some face-saving measures to Speaker Boehner. The ultimate deal has to be something that the vast majority of Democratic senators support, and that means that it has to be something that a very significant percentage of House Democrats support. Here is what Speaker Boehner should be presented with.
He should be presented with a deal that he can only pass with most of the Democratic caucus and a minority of the Republican one. This will break him on the rack and he’ll either force the thing though and lose his influence or he will refuse to try and get blamed for taking us over the cliff.

A deal is preferable to going over the cliff, but we have little reason to pay much of a premium for that. A small face-saving premium? Yes. A premium that most House Republicans support and most House Democrats oppose? Hell no.

In that case, let’s go over the cliff and talk again once we have more congressional members in both Houses in January

No surrender? The GOP’s latest tactic to undermine Obamacare
    By Jonathan Bernstein

Republicans failed to block Obamacare from passing Congress. They failed to get it overturned by the Supreme Court. They failed to repeal it by electing a Republican president.

And now, with the law apparently here to stay, they’re rolling out their latest strategy to undermine it: Make it work badly, so the public wants to repeal it later.

Obamacare is moving forward. The administration is rolling out new regulations today under the Affordable Care Act — regulations that will finally eliminate “pre-existing condition” from the vocabulary of insurance-seeking Americans.

But Republicans are committed to ensuring that the law’s implementation fails. Right now, as Jonathan Cohn notes, Republican governors are trying to accomplish this by turning down the chance to run state-based exchanges. Remember that under the health law, state governments will set up on-line insurance marketplaces so that those without insurance can easily compare and purchase the private-market package best for them. The law did allow for states to opt out, in which case the federal government would do it for them. Now, normally Republicans would assure us that the states do a better job of running things than the federal government in Washington, especially states with Republican governments. The key, however, is that they simply don’t want this policy to work, so they’re simply refusing to implement it: The latest in the GOP scorched earth policy on health care, now that it’s been defeated everywhere else.

This effort to undermine the law by undermining implementation may be unprecedented. Can anyone think of a similar historical example?

They are totally warped & very ignorant. This estupido behavior will take us just that much closer to universal single payer health care. – — –HHS releases rules requiring pre-existing conditions coverage – – –

    — – -The Obama administration issued new rules Tuesday that require insurance companies to cover people with preexisting medical conditions — one of the most popular provisions of President Obama’s healthcare law.

The Health and Human Services Department also began to implement other popular, but expensive, parts of the Affordable Care Act.

Regulations released Tuesday will prohibit insurers from charging women a higher premium than men, and will require plans in every state to cover certain services.

    – – – -SNIP – —

While the new rules don’t answer some questions for states, they do provide much-needed specifics for insurance companies that must prepare for new mandates set to take effect in 2014.

“We welcome the release of the proposed regulations on exchanges, essential health benefits and insurance reforms, which are critical to implementing the healthcare reform law,” the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association said in a statement. “With open enrollment less than a year away, having final rules is critical.”

OT-Thanksgiving: Aquagranny, I’m not making the big spread this year, but I’m doing some sides, probably an apple pie (I usually cut a pear into them for flavor), and I’m definitely making these brownies. Someone at work made them and they are just unbelievable (I’m copying in the gluten free recipe because that’s how he made them {I think he has a food allergy} but they can be made with regular flour in the same amounts as well}):

      Brownies:
      http://glutenfreegirl.com/brownies-gluten-free/

      8 tablespoons unsalted butter
4 ounces bittersweet chocolate (or as dark as you can stand it)
      1 cup sugar
      2 eggs
      1 teaspoon vanilla extract
      1/4 teaspoon salt
      1/4 cup brown rice flour
      1/4 cup tapioca flour

Preparing. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Grease an 8-inch square metal baking pan. Chop the chocolate into small slivers. Slice the butter into one-inch pieces. Combine the two flours together.

Melting the chocolate. Bring a saucepan of water to a boil, and then turn it down to a simmer. Place a large metal bowl over the top of the saucepan. Put the chocolate and butter into the metal bowl and stir, occasionally, as they both begin to melt. As they come to a full melt, stir and stir, vigorously, until you have a cohesive mixture.

Making the brownies. In a medium-sized bowl, combine the sugar and eggs, whisking vigorously until they are creamed together, with a silky consistency. Add the vanilla extract and salt and stir well. Add in the gluten-free flours and stir. Finally, pour in the melted chocolate-butter mixture and stir, carefully, with a rubber spatula, until the mixture has become smooth.

Baking the brownies. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking pan. Smooth the top with the spatula. Slide the baking pan into the oven and set the timer for 25 minutes.

Finishing the brownies. As the brownies are baking, fill the sink with ice cubes and 1 inch of water. When the brownies are finished baking, remove the pan from the oven and place it immediately into the ice-water bath. (Don’t let any water splash up onto the brownies!) Let the brownies stay there until they have cooled completely.

These brownies taste best the next day, after an entire night of refrigeration. That makes the top crunchy, the insides decadently chewy. However, I’m sure no one would suffer if you ate the brownies immediately, either.

FYI: It says at the site to NOT use a glass dish for these.

      • Aquagranny911

Bookmarking & I will try these maybe for Christmas. I love a good brownie. I have Mama’s recipe which calls for good dark Mexican chocolate which you can hardly get anymore. We use to get a big solid chunk in Nogales for about one dollar.

I will also be passing this to a niece who has a child with a lot of food allergies. He can’t have anything wheat, nuts or dairy but Niece is a genius at substituting for things like butter. I bet this would work for her.

Gracias! I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Denny’s, Papa John’s, walk back criticism of Obamacare
    Ned Resnikoff, @resnikoff
    3:31 pm on 11/20/2012

Conservative restauranteurs are discovering that retaliation against the Affordable Care Act is bad for business.

Papa John’s CEO John Schnatter took to the Huffington Post to clarify his earlier suggestion that some restaurants might need to increase prices and cut employee hours in order to deal with the cost of Obamacare.

“Many in the media reported that I said Papa John’s is going to close stores and cut jobs because of Obamacare,” he wrote in a blog post. “I never said that. The fact is we are going to open over hundreds of stores this year and next and increase employment by over 5,000 jobs worldwide. And, we have no plans to cut team hours as a result of the Affordable Care Act.”

No lie! When I lived in rural Mississippi the only “delivery” pizza I could get happened only on Saturday night & was from the local gas station, bar & grill. We’re already seeing McCain show his behind re: Susan Rice, but here’s a blast from the past in terms of what to expect from the GOP’s “top bench” upon the ascendance of a brilliant woman of color to a well-deserved appointment:

Newt Gingrich: Sonia Sotomayor a ‘racist’

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) on Wednesday charged that Judge Sonia Sotomayor is a “racist.”

“Imagine a judicial nominee said ‘my experience as a white man makes me better than a Latina woman.’ Wouldn’t they have to withdraw? New racism is no better than old racism,” Gingrich wrote in a post on his blog.

“A white man racist nominee would be forced to withdraw. Latina woman racist should also withdraw,” he added.

Judge refuses to halt progress of California high-speed rail

A judge on Friday denied a legal bid by farmers seeking to stall construction of the initial segment of California’s $68 billion high-speed rail project in the state’s agricultural heartland. Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Timothy Frawley denied a preliminary injunction motion filed by farmers who said they would be adversely affected by construction of the ambitious rail project.[....]

Construction of the initial segment is expected to begin in the summer of 2013, Richard added. California’s bullet train network, expected to take decades to complete, would eventually connect Sacramento and San Francisco to Los Angeles, with stops along the 800-mile (1300-km) system.[....]

Mosque In Tennessee Holds Official Grand Opening |

A Murfreesboro, Tennessee mosque, after fighting through two years of lawsuits, held a grand opening celebration on Sunday. The Murfreesboro, Tennessee Daily News Journal reported from the ceremony yesterday, where speakers included “Jerry Martin, U.S. attorney for Middle Tennessee, and Thomas Perez, U.S. assistant attorney general of the Department of Justice.”

The Chairman of the Mosque said during the ceremony that, “today, Sunday, Nov. 18, marks the occasion of the opening of the Islamic Center of Murfreesboro. I don’t know if you can tell how truly proud I am to say that. It was a long and bumpy road, a journey like no other. It was rough.” The opening comes after the mosque received a permanent occupancy permit because “the U.S. attorney argued that federal law required the county issue the certificate.” Previously, in August, the mosque had a prayer service after it was granted a temporary occupancy permit.

No, The United States Will Not Go Into A Debt Crisis, Not Now, Not Ever

If there’s one article of faith in Washington (and elsewhere), it’s the idea that the United States might get into a debt crisis if it doesn’t get its fiscal house in order. This is not true. The reason why it’s not true is because we live in a fiat currency system, where the United States government can create an infinite number of dollars at no cost to meet its obligations.

A Treasury bill is a promise that the government will give you US dollars–something that the United States government can produce infinitely and at no cost. That’s the reason why interest rates on United States debt have only gone down even as the debt has ballooned.[....]

Ken Burns Fights City Hall Over His New Film on the Central Park Jogger Case

“They’re so full of shit,” says Ken Burns, railing against lawyers for New York, the city that’s been the glamorous star of so many of his documentaries. “The outrage that I feel comes from the fact that people were readily willing to sacrifice the lives of five young men, that they were expendable, that they’re still stuck in a lie, and that the institutional protectionism continues.”

The master of languid still-photo pans and narration-heavy historical rambles seems to have metamorphosed into a firebrand—and not just in conversation. His new documentary, The Central Park Five, looks more like a Spike Lee joint or an Errol Morris exposé than anything in the Burns wheelhouse. It’s about five Harlem teens convicted of the infamous 1989 rape of Central Park jogger Trisha Meili only on the basis of shaky confessions. Those convictions were vacated in 2002 after a serial rapist, whose DNA matched some found at the scene, came clean as the sole attacker—and after the Five had been jailed for years and permanently branded as emblems of urban decay. The movie alternates between grainy, jump-cut archival footage, searing interviews of the men, and ticktock deconstruction of their interrogations. There is minimal music and no narration. An Oscar contender with a limited release this week, Five recently became part of its own news cycle when city lawyers subpoenaed the outtakes for their defense of a civil suit filed by the five men.
    [...]
They reasoned that a film, especially a Ken Burns production, could help drive home the men’s innocence—which “never got the attention that their guilt did,” as a historian puts it in the movie. One of their most difficult tasks was explaining how five different teens could have confessed to something they knew nothing about. “I had to understand for myself how it happened,” says Sarah, who lives with McMahon in Park Slope. “It’s the hardest part, in some ways, to wrap your head around.” The film details the tricks detectives used—dangling the promise of food, sleep, and home in return for concocted scenes in which the suspects claimed to be minor players, but pointed fingers at each other. “It’s amazingly similar in all these cases,” Sarah says, “the same sort of techniques that are really effective even when you’re innocent.”

NFL Will Upgrade To Electronic Medical Records To Help Track Players’ Football Injuries

Officials from the National Football League (NFL) announced on Monday that the organization will begin transitioning from the hand-written records it currently uses to keep track of players’s health to electronic medical records (EMRs) that will digitally record players’ injuries and general health histories.

The new system will be phased in over two seasons and eventually implemented across all 32 professional football teams. While the NFL’s shift to EMRs won’t make football safer in and of itself, it will help ensure that team medics and private physicians can more easily share players’ medical histories, as well as allow doctors to monitor sensitive head injuries in real time:[....]

Top Three Things You Need To Know About The New Obamacare Rules

[....] In a call with reporters, CMS and HHS outlined the new proposed rules, which instruct insurers, providers, and governmental institutions on how they must proceed in implementing Obamacare measures — ranging from a ban on discriminating against Americans with pre-existing medical conditions to public wellness initiatives such as coverage for employees’ gym use. Here are the three most important things you need to know about the new rules:

    1) Insurers will be prohibited from discriminating against Americans with pre-existing conditions.[....]

    2) State exchanges will establish a standard of “essential health benefits” that every plan will be required to cover.[....]

    3) Wellness programs will help promote public health and curb health care costs.[....]

WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO:
request that Sen. John McCain issue a public apology to UN Ambassador Susan Rice.

Sen. John McCain has recently waged a very public campaign to call into question the professional integrity and competence of UN Ambassador Susan Rice. McCain’s criticisms fly in the face of official evidence and smack of a more personal vendetta against Ms. Rice and the Obama administration, not to mention that McCain has become an embarrassment to himself, the US Senate and his constituency.

Sen. McCain needs to apologize and stand down, ASAP.

So so so so f-ing utterly sick and tired of the MASSIVE disrespect towards black people which is inherent in the fauxgressive tendency to claim that any and erryone relates to us as an “oppressed minority.” If black people do anything in term two, we need to stop the media onslaught against our history and our civil rights movement, because this is just getting fucking ridiculous:

@mediaite PETA Asks Obama To Stop Turkey-Pardoning Ceremony, Compares Turkeys To Minorities http://bit.ly/T2e8mA

PETA sent out a letter to the Obama administration earlier today saying that the turkey-pardoning ceremony “makes light of the mass slaughter of some 46 million gentle, intelligent birds.” PETA president Ingrid Newkirk says this is the first time they have ever directly petitioned the White House about the ceremony itself, and criticized Obama for being a supposed “progressive standing there with an industry representative of factory farming.”

The above image was used as part of PETA’s campaign to get people to go vegan on Thanksgiving, arguing that you would never eat a poor, defenseless little puppy, so why would you eat a turkey.

In the letter, Newkirk compares the struggles of turkeys to the long history of minority groups being oppressed in the United States.

“You understand so well that African-Americans, women, and members of the LGBT community have been poorly served throughout history, and now I am asking you to consider other living beings who are ridiculed, belittled, and treated as if their sentience, feelings, and very natures count for nothing.”

It also can be associated with a related adage that, “if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it probably is a duck” and it is very apropos to the Republican Party and their recent assertion they are changing to attract more voters as a response to their crushing defeat in the recent election, but they are adhering to same hateful agenda. The sad fact is regardless the GOP’s words that they heeded the voters’ message, they are plotting the same course with the same players the voters rejected two weeks ago.

Republicans have lambasted Willard Romney for his comments in a call with donors that President Obama won because he gave gifts to women, minorities, and students, while they plod ahead with Romney and Ryan’s failed recipe to save the economy from “takers” by proposing harsh austerity measures to avoid the so-call fiscal cliff. They have also said they have to start reaching out to those groups and let them know they “like them,” but their actions belie their pathetic words. The Republican Party has tried this tactic before in 2010 when they promised their focus was on creating jobs, but like 2011, they are lying.
