BREAKING… Philadelphia City Hall, Mayor Nutter’s office

Today, we’re taking the fight for public education to the next level! Parents, teachers, students and community members are sitting in the Mayor’s office as we speak, and they are refusing to leave until the Mayor agrees to support a one year moratorium on school closings. They are joined by NAACP President Jerry Mondesire and Philadelphia Federation of Teachers President Jerry Jordan. This is an historic day for public education in Philadelphia.

President Obama Doesn’t Owe You Any Favors
    By Danielle Gibbs Léger

Last week I did a radio interview talking about President Obama’s second term. One of the things the host wanted to talk about was Obama’s relationship with the Black community. Specifically, did I think that he needed to have a “Black Agenda” or talk more overtly about race. I sighed, and gave a version of the answer I’ve been giving for the past few years: “No, not really.” Now, just because I used to work for the President doesn’t mean I give him a free pass or agree with him in all things (like this, for example). But on this particular topic? I got Obama’s back, and here’s why.

To paraphrase James Carville, it’s the policy, people. To me, that’s what it all comes down to. The President’s job is to push for policies and sign bills that better the lives of you, your family, your community and your country. Rhetoric is important, symbolism is important, special shout-outs feel great. But none of that is as important as the laws that get passed that have a direct impact on our lives.

Sometimes I think we expect more out of someone who looks like us than other people (much in the same way women expect more out of other women leaders). But I think that is totally the wrong way to go about it. We should be holding the President to the SAME standard we hold every other president to. As in, he shouldn’t be passing laws nor doing things to harm us. But I don’t expect him to do something that I wouldn’t expect of say, President Clinton, or President Bush for that matter (I just know the likelihood of being pleased is different under one of those men). It makes me wonder how much of this is personal with *some* of the folks complaining the loudest. I’m not one to see conspiracies around every corner, but some of the commentary out there about Obama and the Black community sounds a lot like hurt feelings and bruised egos.

Now, that’s not to say there isn’t room for improvement — no one is perfect, not even the President. There’s always something “more” everyone can be doing. But on the whole, I think some of the gripes against Obama are unfounded. It’s not like he hasn’t spoken directly to issues pertaining to the African American community. And it’s not like he hasn’t passed laws that have direct benefit on the community as well, such as supporting minority-owned businesses through the Small Business Administration, ending the crack/cocaine sentencing disparities, passing the Affordable Care Act and investing in HBCU’s, to name a few.

(hi Trini!!!!!!!!) This is food for thought, but I can’t agree entirely with this.

Following her linked example of a disagreement which she has with the POTUS, I’m reading a hyperbolic claim that PBO has significant shortcomings when it comes to a conservation legacy. So…environmentalists and every group under the sun can make demands of the POTUS, some of which aren’t quite fair, are hyperbolic, and worst of all, some of which are cloaked in manipulative, outright racist vernacular (“how dare the first black POTUS not advocate for abc ‘new’ majority white civil rights group”) but African Americans should simply accept the line that we should expect nothing more out of PBO than Clinton or Bush?

      Come now.

I understand her points in terms of the petty, unfair complaints coming from folks like West and Smiley which seem suspiciously personal. I also think that she laid out the items which PBO has delivered to the black community. In agreement there, one thousand percent. But don’t run on “have his back!” in time for the elections, and then “he don’t owe you nigras shit!” afterwards. Pendulum’s swinging too far for me. This is the second term. African Americans should advocate loudly (but very respectfully towards a great POTUS) for ourselves; if we don’t, who will?

    geez……

House Republicans introduced a continuing resolution yesterday that would prevent the federal government from being shut down, and this was tucked away inside of it:

WASHINGTON — A new short-term budget bill introduced on Monday by House Republicans includes a bizarre provision banning federal funding to anti-poverty group ACORN, despite the fact that the group has already been stripped of federal funding — and has been defunct for nearly three years. [...]

Section 510 of the latest legislation, introduced by House Appropriations Chair Hal Rogers (R-Ky.), reads: “None of the funds made available in this Act may be distributed to the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN) or its subsidiaries or successors.”
    ………….
The chairman of the House Appropriations Committee apparently isn’t aware that ACORN closed in 2010. The chairman!

There’s no hope for us. Shut it down.

Armstrong Williams to Buy Two TV Stations
    Send by email
    Thursday, February 28, 2013

Armstrong WilliamsArmstrong Williams, the conservative commentator and entrepreneur, is buying two television stations newly acquired by Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc., the parties announced Thursday. The transaction would instantly multiply the tiny number of commercial television stations owned by African Americans.

African American ownership dropped from 12 stations in 2009 to 10 stations in 2011, or less than 1 percent of the nation’s 1,348 full-power television stations, the Federal Communications Commission said in November.

Williams plans to acquire WEYI-TV, an NBC affiliate in the Flint/Saginaw/Bay City/Midland, Mich., market, ranked no. 67, and WWMB-TV, a CW affiliate in market 103 in the Myrtle Beach/Florence, S.C., market, near Williams’ hometown of Marion, S.C.

No purchase price was disclosed. The transaction is part of a larger deal in which Sinclair agreed to purchase the broadcast assets of 18 television stations owned by Barrington Broadcasting Group, LLC for $370 million and entered into agreements to operate or provide sales services to another six stations. The deal is subject to approval by the FCC and antitrust clearance. Williams said he was financing the purchase through J.P. Morgan Chase.

Jesse L. Martin As Marvin Gaye: Actor Replaces Lenny Kravitz In ‘Sexual Healing’

    Posted: 03/04/2013 5:11 pm EST | Updated: 03/04/2013 5:11 pm EST

Lenny Kravitz will not play Marvin Gaye in “Sexual Healing,” an upcoming biopic. Deadline.com reports Jesse L. Martin will fill in for Kravitz, a surprising development given that Martin was actually originally cast in the film when it was to be produced by James Gandolfini.

Marvin Gaye III (the singer’s son) had previously expressed grave reservations about Kravitz portraying the Motown legend, going so far as to slam the entire project as “shameful.”

Kravitz was first cast in Julien Temple’s take on a portion of Gaye’s life in November. Temple remains on the project.

“Sexual Healing” is slated to start production later this month, so it seems Gaye III has come to terms with the plans. All’s not lost for Kravitz: He’ll reprise his role as Cinna in “Catching Fire,” the upcoming “Hunger Games” sequel.

Oprah to Give Harvard Commencement Address
    By Derrick Bryson Taylor

Graduation season is around the corner and big name universities are making their bids to get a celebrity to perform that year’s commencement speech. Harvard University has selected OWN creator Oprah Winfrey for their upcoming Afternoon Exercises.

“Oprah’s journey from her grandmother’s Mississippi farm to becoming one of the world’s most admired women is one of the great American success stories,” said Harvard President Drew Faust, reports the Harvard Gazette. “She has used her extraordinary influence and reach as a force for good in the world, with a constant focus on the importance of education opportunity and the virtues of serving others.”

The President of the Harvard Alumni Association, Carl F. Muller, echoed similar sentiments about Winfrey’s stellar achievements. “[She] is an inspiration to people around the world who care about opening minds and serving the common good. I know our alumni will value the opportunity to hear from her in May.”

This no doubt upset ticket holders, but it also seems to have struck a nerve with Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), who introduced an amendment to a continuing resolution on the federal budget that seeks to block President Obama from using federal funds for any future golf outings until the tours are reinstated:

None of the funds made available by a division of this Act may be used to transport the President to or from a golf course until public tours of the White House resume.

What does Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. have in common with explorer Amerigo Vespucci, poet Allen Ginsberg , and actress Mary Pickford? They’re all new on the wall at the National Portrait Gallery in D.C. In an e-mail to friends and supporters, Gates called the unveiling of his portrait “one of the most exciting moments of my life.” The oil painting, done by artist Yuqi Wang, shows Gates standing beside a table with an African sculpture and books by W. E. B. Du Bois, Wole Soyinka, and Kwame Anthony Appiah on it. “The perfect portrait for the National Portrait Gallery is one that combines a nationally significant subject and the work of an exceptional artist,” Brandon Fortune, the Portrait Gallery’s chief curator, told us Monday. She said the painting was commissioned by Harvard and then offered to the Portrait Gallery. “It’s a long, drawn out process when we consider a portrait of someone who has not previously been in our collection,” Fortune said.

One of the nation’s preeminent African-American scholars, Gates made headlines a few years ago when he was arrested by Cambridge police investigating a possible break-in at the professor’s Ware Street home near Harvard Square Gates and the arresting officer, Sergeant James Crowley, later joined President Obama and Vice President Biden at the White House for what became known as the “Beer Summit.” The Gates portrait will be on display at the National Portrait Gallery until November, when it will join the 20,000 paintings, photos, and sculptures in the permanent collection.
