DNC marks 100 days to President Obama’s speech in Charlotte
    By Celeste Smith
    May 29, 2012

Democratic National Convention organizers released a video Tuesday marking the 100-day countdown from when President Barack Obama gives his acceptance speech at Bank of America Stadium.

The “I’m There” video touts Charlotte mainstays – from the stadium to Gold Rush trolley to the statutes at the square at Trade and Tryon. The video features still shots of individuals and groups holding a sign bearing the convention logo and the “I’m There” slogan.

During a press conference at the stadium to unveil the video, officials said the video plays up the excitement about the convention coming to Charlotte in September.

    See video here.

  • We should all tweet this to Van Jones…

A unit in the civil rights division focused on discrimination in the housing market has been churning out cases accusing major lenders of charging African-American and Hispanic borrowers higher interest rates than similar white borrowers.

In April, for example, it sued GFI Mortgage Bankers Inc on such grounds for loan activity from 2005 through 2009.

In December, the Justice Department reached a record $335 million settlement with failed mortgage lender Countrywide Financial Corp, now owned by Bank of America Corp, for loans made between 2004 and 2008.

And last year it settled allegations that C&F Mortgage Corp charged more and provided smaller discounts on home loans made to black and Hispanic borrowers, and resolved allegations that Nixon State Bank charged higher prices on unsecured consumer loans made to Hispanic borrowers.

Earlier this month Wells Fargo & Co too disclosed it could face charges under similar laws.

    By: NY1 News

One of the original dancers at the famed Cotton Club is dead.

Juanita Boisseau died last week at the age of 100.

A Baltimore native, Boisseau began performing at the Harlem institution in the early 1930s where she danced with the legendary Lena Horne.

Run by the infamous gangster Dutch Schultz, the Cotton Club was her main stage until she moved to France and became a fixture of Paris’ Jazz Age, dancing with Josephine Baker.

Juanita Boisseau’s funeral will be held Friday at the North Presbyterian Church.

She will be buried on Long Island.

Romney Spox: ‘Democrats’ Behind Trump Talk

Mitt Romney is personally holding a joint fundraiser with Donald Trump Tuesday night in Las Vegas, but his campaign is blaming Democrats for making an issue out of Trump’s days-long birther screed.

“The Democrats can talk about Donald Trump all they want – Mitt Romney is going to talk about jobs,” a spokesman told CNN, adding that Romney believes Obama was born in the United States.

Trump publicly challanged Romney to embrace birthers on Tuesday, warning on Twitter that repudiating the movement could cost Republicans the election.

Here’s hoping she will take it out on the field at Wimbledon in two weeks.

Gibbs: Bain is Romney’s “thesis” for president, calls attacks fair

(CBS News) On “Face the Nation,” President Obama’s senior campaign adviser Robert Gibbs defended the campaign’s attacks on Bain Capital, the private equity firm Mitt Romney co-founded and led for more than a decade.

“That is what Mitt Romney is running on,” Gibbs hold host Bob Schieffer. “This is a criticism and a good criticism, quite honestly, of Mitt Romney’s only thesis for being president of the United States . . . and I think the American people and voters deserve to understand what Mitt Romney means when he says he has the keys to being the economic savior.”

The Obama campaign makes the argument that Romney’s role at the private equity firm, whose main role is to make money for investors, is not equivalent to creating jobs. To drive home the point, the campaign released two ads in the past two weeks hitting Romney’s record at Bain, pointing to two companies – Ampad and GST Steel – that laid-off workers after Bain Capital acquired them.

Host Bob Schieffer queried Gibbs about the tenor of the campaign: “Whatever happened to hope and change?” he asked.

Now, go play golf with Poppy Bush, tired of your trifling azz!

      • AxelFoley

        Thank you.

    • Camille

      Dear Bob Schieffer,

Hope and change never meant that this President was going to allow you guys tie his hands behind his back and help Mitt Romney beat him up with lies , insults and racist attacks.

Hope and change never meant that this President gave up his right to intelligently respond to false claims and assertions made by his vicious opponent.

Hope and change never meant that President would stand by and let Mitt Romney and you the complicit media distort and diminish President Obama’s hard-won historic accomplishments on behalf of the American people so that Mitt Romney can win the White House and return us to the 20th century.

Fuck you Bob Schieffer and fuck all your fellow bought and paid for Romney media surrogates. There is only one spot for press secretary in a fictional Romney presidency and your auditions are fast becoming a bore.

Sidney Barthwell, ex-classmate of Romney and Obama’s, says president will ‘smoke’ GOP nominee in debates

Sidney Barthwell recently became famous overnight because he has the odd distinction of having attended school with both President Obama and his GOP opponent Mitt Romney. While he has sung the praises of both men, Barthwell has argued that Obama will be a far more effective debater than the former Massachusetts governor. Barthwell claims Obama would “smoke” Romney in a general election face-off. The Huffington Post reports:

      • itgurl_29

It won’t word. They tried that with McCain and it didn’t work. The debates are the one forum they can’t spin against the President. Because President Obama doesn’t just debate, he destroys his opponent and does it with a smile on his face.

        • Miranda

He destroys his opponent in such a way the opponent becomes a rambling, senile incoherent fool for all the world to see.

        • MsKitty

It always cracked me up how after each debate every pundit was pushing the “McCain was the winner” meme, until the viewer polls came in showing that PBO crushed him. Then they’d stammer and backtrack “uh, what we meant to say was…” Every single debate went down like this.

      • AxelFoley

I wonder if CNN is gonna do them polls again that showed who the viewers thought won the debates back in ’08. LOL, I remember after each debate, one of them CNN assholes would declare McCain the winner, then they’d show the viewers reaction which would show Obama whooped McCain’s ass.

I bet they won’t try that again.

    – – – —Nation of Islam leader Minister Louis Farrakhan pulled no punches recently in response to President Obama’s endorsement of gay marriage, calling him the “first president that sanctions what the scripture forbids.”

During an address at the California Convention Center on Sunday, Farrakhan held up the Newsweek magazine cover which depicts Obama with a rainbow halo on his head and labels him the ‘first gay president.’ “Now you think they’re not mocking him?” Farrakhan asks his audience.

According to the video, posted by Nation publication The Final Call, Farrakhan insists that he is not homophobic. “I am not your enemy, I am you brother and I do love you,” he said of the LGBT community. Yet, he added, “sin is sin according to the standard of god.”

This is not the first time Farrakhan has publicly condemned Barack Obama. In 2011, Farrakhan labeled Obama an assassin and warned of the consequences of the death of Colonel Muammar Gadhafi of Libya, with whom Farrakhan had a close friendship since the 1990s.

Back in 2008, during a Nation of Islam Saviours’ Day event, Louis Farrakhan struck a much more positive note regarding the president, telling a large crowd that when Obama talks, “the Messiah is speaking.”

Marco Rubio blows off voter ID laws that target young voters, the elderly, low income voters, Latinos: “What’s the big deal?”
Posted on Tuesday, May 29, 2012, 11:44 am by GottaLaff

Indulge me for a minute, because I’m going to quote myself. As I said in The GOP plan is working: New voter registration laws could hurt President Obama, the people suffering the worst consequences of the Voter I.D. laws are most often low income voters, the elderly, the ill who can’t leave home, young voters, minorities, and of course, anyone without transportation (or to put it another way, lean Democratic). And to those who say, “Well, there are always absentee ballots,” some states are now requiring Voter I.D. to qualify for those, too.

But Voter I.D. demands are just part of the increasing list of conditions that Republicans are imposing that will disenfranchise voters. There are also voter-registration drive limits, early-voting restrictions, and fewer precincts which means more people waiting in longer lines.

But back to the Voter I.D. laws… Charging for picture I.D.s is tantamount to charging a poll tax. Making them inaccessible is outright voter suppression. And voter fraud (as opposed to election fraud) is virtually non-existent.

Via CNN, the always-sensitive, caring Marco Rubio had this to say about the Voter I.D. laws:

During a campaign stop last month with Romney in Pennsylvania, Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, a Cuban-American Republican, blew off what he sees as overhyped concerns about showing photo IDs.

People have to show IDs for everything from boarding a flight to renting sports equipment, Rubio reasoned, so why not voting.

“What’s the big deal? What is the big deal?” Rubio asked.

What’s the big deal? Well, preventing millions of Americans from voting is a pretty damn big deal.

    The People’s View

Barack Obama’s betrayal of the progressive program
    Tuesday, May 29, 2012 | Posted by rootless_e at 12:31 PM

Six months after the Presidential inauguration in 2009 a not untypical progressive named Marie Marchand wrote in Common Dreams that “I want my money back” (from the Obama campaign):

I gave $20 a week for seven months, plus $60 every once in a while for a t-shirt and sticker. I gave of my modest purse joyfully. Once I add that all up, it makes a grand total of… $106 billion?! Wait a minute, I thought I was supporting change I could believe in, not more of the same bloodshed and war! […] I expect the Republicans to throw money at the Military Industrial Complex. Yet, from the Democrats, I was promised a different direction (like OUT of the Middle East). Regrettably, there has been miniscule change. There is still nothing to believe in.

Senator Obama’s campaign proposals on the Middle East included proposals to “to ramp up the American military effort,” in Afghanistan and “remove one or two brigades a month from Iraq.” – exactly what he did.
But Ms. Marchand’s angry “I was promised a different direction” is a typical complaint of the unhappy progressives. Complaints were on all issues – including the President’s failure to support single payer health reform something he had not advocated either. In fact, we can take a look at Dennis Kucinich’s platform in the primary elections to get a good idea of what the progressives seem to have expected (and remember Kucinich never polled at more than 7% among Democrats). The obvious question is why these “progressives” expected someone who ran as a moderate to become a hard line battler for the Kucinich agenda that was unambiguously rejected by Democratic primary voters and that had no chance of Congressional approval. Part of it has to do with the odd tendency of some “progressive” activists to imagine that they speak for all Democrats or even for 99% of the population. The Obama campaign received donations from three million people – why would it be that the donations from a progressive activist would determine policy more than the donations of many centrist or conservative or pragmatic Democrats? Obviously Kucinich Democrats are a small minority in the Democratic Party. But Ms. Marchand was likely also influenced by a deceptive line of attack by leftists who had always opposed the Obama campaign, a line of attack that dominated the progressive blogs and media and that was strongly amplified by the mainstream media. That attack has been carefully designed to try to break up the Democratic coalition and I want to look at that attack so we can see how the same people will act as they try to help the Republicans win the next election.

    – – –Virtual Blackout From National Media On Voter Suppression In Florida – – –

    – – — — –Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) has directed his administration to purge the state’s voting rolls of thousands of registered voters prior to the November election. But his list, which purports to include only “non-citizens,” targets mostly Democrats and Hispanics and, as ThinkProgress has documented, may disenfranchise hundreds of citizens who are eligible to vote.

The story of a sitting governor of a state with a history of presidential election shenanigans knowingly purging his own, eligible constituents from the voter rolls is the definition of major news, and yet remarkably, in the first five months of the year, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and USA Today have published a total of zero articles about Scott’s actions. The New York Times did slightly better, printing one story on page 16 of the Friday, May 18th edition. The article ran under the credulous headline: “Florida Steps Up Effort Against Illegal Vote

    – – – -SKIP – –

Florida’s local newspapers, led by The Miami Herald, have been far more diligent in reporting the governor’s effort to disenfranchise eligible voters.

Not enough Democrats(politicians/voters) are speaking up about voter suppresion. The Dems that are speaking about it really don’t care, because they have an ID or because they are white. Thus, will have no problem voting in November. Holder(DOJ) have been doing great on this issue. We have to continue to inform people on these laws. Also, it’s time for many to leave the 2010 election results in 2010, those results don’t excuse people from being denied the right to vote! I am still baffled that we have to fight for our right to vote in 2012.

According to the findings, the top physician specialties that cannot accept new Medicaid patients are dermatologists (34 percent), endocrinologists (36 percent), and plastic surgeons (36 percent). Physicians struggle to take on Medicaid patients due to low reimbursement rates from the Medicaid program; however, President Obama’s health care reform law will seek to address this issue by adding $11 billion in Medicaid funds for primary care physicians over the next two years. Fully funding Obamacare — rather than slashing the funds that would expand coverage for low-income Americans, as Republicans continue to propose — will help increase the number of both doctors and patients who can benefit from the program.

Obama met with 24 women on Monday who were accepted into the navy’s nuclear submarine program and are serving on ballistic and guided missle submarines.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to serve as sponsor of the USS ILLINOIS,” Obama said in a statement. “I’m always inspired by the service and sacrifice of the men and women of the Navy, as well as the families who support them. This submarine is a tribute to the strength, courage, and determination that our Navy families exhibit every day.”

    From the White House announcement:

In sponsoring USS Illinois, the First Lady joins a tradition of First Lady sponsorship of U.S. Navy submarines. First Lady Laura Bush is USS Texas’ (SSN 775) sponsor and christened it in 2004; First Lady Hillary Clinton is USS Columbia’s (SSN 771) sponsor and christened it in 1994. As sponsor, the First Lady will establish a special link to Illinois, her Sailors, and their families that extends throughout the life of the submarine…

Ugh, I am so pissed by the last segment on Rachel Maddow where John Harwood was on and basically said that yeah Romney is using Trump’s birtherism to raise money and as a way to “stick it to the lefttis and the Rachel Maddow and MSNBC” and let them know that they dont’ plan to buckle down to the left and that Romney was actually joking about birtherism and the campaign released Romney’s birth certificate today as a way to put the Rachel Maddows and MSNBC of the world that the campaign won’t be apologizing for anything.

Harwwod basically said that hey what backlash, people already consider Trump a clown, so hey who really cares if Romney dabbles in birtherism…I think Rachel was stunned by Harwood. She seemed speechless that Harwood was actually saying that hey it’s no big deal that the Romney camp is happy to out right court racist idiots like Trump. It took her a moment to try to push back, but it was half-hearted at best since, IMHO, she just seemed shock that Harwood was so blase’ about the whole thing.

If Harwood is the voice of the village, then I feel sadder than I already felt for the citizens of US who gets their info from feckless hacks like Harwood and the like.

ETA: Rachel’s intro was great though, but Harwood completely pissed on it.

      • Camille

No different really from other so-called liberal hosts and shows who fill their programs with rabid right-wingers and their warped justifications and viewpoints that always seem to downplay and dismiss vicious attacks on President Obama while trying to cover for and protect Mitt Romney.

Tuesday’s Bill Press show was just another example of this glaring fact that the so-called liberal media drinks heartily from the same poisonous fountain with their right wing pals.

Bill Press stand in had 2 shallow vacuous right wing hacks Julie Mason of Ploitico now on Romney’s Sirius radio and Meredith Shiner from Roll Call. It was puke worthy watching that sham show I eventually had to switch off but not before hearing them all gush about how marvelous a “journalist” Glen fucking Thrush is! It figures that rabid mediocrity will celebrate first tier rabid mediocrity of course.

How is it possible that Bill Press cannot find credible news and investigative journalists capable of actually bringing news and information to his viewers instead of this heap of crappy, pull out of their buttholes and wing it mediocre hacks all vying and auditioning for a t.v show with any network that will have them? They add nothing new and never have nothing to report besides hazarding guesses about just about everything they are asked. It is so pitiful.

Now we have Major Garrett trained at FOX pretending to be some sort of credible “journalist” and Bill Press keeps elevating him too and deceiving uninformed viewers at Current into thinking Garrett is some independent minded moderate.

Only 244 of McCotter’s 1,830 submitted signatures were valid; official calls it ‘unprecedented’ fraud
    12:17 PM, May 29, 2012

The uphill slog of a write-in congressional campaign begins today for U.S. Rep. Thaddeus McCotter, R-Livonia.

“It’s going to be very difficult,” he said in an interview with the Free Press this morning. “But the NRCC (National Republican Congressional Committee) supports it. The state party supports it and the people in the district support it.”

It’s not a position that McCotter wants to be in. But his campaign failed to file enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot. A congressional candidate must submit at least 1,000 and not more than 2,000 valid signatures to get on the ballot.

The Secretary of State’s website said McCotter’s campaign initially submitted 2,000 signatures.

Somebody either panicked or it was sabotage,” McCotter said. “This was not a case of somebody who didn’t live in the district. My gut tells me that we got lied to by someone we trusted.”

The Secretary of State has said that one of the problems with the petitions were duplicate signatures and when those are found, both signatures are ruled invalid. Some of the petition sheets also were photocopied and turned in.

Bureau of Elections Director Christopher Thomas said this morning that elections officials found an “unprecedented level” of obvious fraud, including dozens of identical petition sheets that had been photocopied.

Signatures on photocopied petitions are automatically disallowed, he said; all pages must be original.

There were also photocopies of petition sheets that appear to have been lifted from another document, possibly signatures collected during an earlier campaign, Thomas said.

In all, the bureau estimated that all but 244 of the 1,830 purported petition signatures were invalid, he said.

The matter has been turned over the to state Attorney General’s office for investigation to see if any fraud or criminal activities occurred in the gathering or submission of petitions.

“There are irregularities that need to be investigated,” McCotter said. “We relied on people who had done it before for us. But somebody did something that they shouldn’t have.”

McCotter is not underestimating the difficulty of a write-in campaign for the Aug. 7 primary when turnout is lower than a general election.

    – – –Investigators Turn Up the Heat on Scott Walker with Bid Rigging Probe – – –

    – – – –You might have thought it was enough that the John Doe investigation into Republican Governor Scott Walker’s time as County Executive and his campaign at the time for Governor has resulted in convictions against six individuals closely associated with the Governor. But no. There’s more.

Aside from campaigning on the taxpayer dime, secretive email systems, violations of campaign finance laws, destruction of digital data, and using taxpayer funded time to spread online favorable propaganda about the governor, Walker’s dealings with a land deal are also of issue.

Milwaukee prosecutors are looking into bid rigging that may have taken place around the county’s efforts to lease public or private office space for the Department of Aging.

Wisc Politics reports, “Frank Tuerkheimer, an emeritus law professor at the University of Wisconsin and former member of the Watergate prosecution staff, said reports today about the John Doe looking into potential bid rigging in Milwaukee County means the investigation has taken a turn of “an even more serious magnitude.”

Involved in this deal is long time Walker friend and campaign adviser, John Hiller. Their friendship goes back to college where Walker dropped out after being found guilty of illegal campaigning. Hiller was the treasurer of Walker’s county and gubernatorial campaigns, and the Journal Sentinel notes that Hiller left that position in May of 2011, “amid the John Doe investigations.”
