    – – —Pittsburgh exhibit features Negro League pictures

    – – —A new exhibit at Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Museum of Art shows the vibrant world of Negro League baseball through the eyes of legendary black photographer Teenie Harris.

The “Baseball in Pittsburgh” exhibit opened Saturday and runs through Sept. 22. It includes 25 pictures and 650 more are available for online viewing.

Harris photographed legendary players such as Jackie Robinson but also captured fans of the era and even youth league hopefuls.

“It wasn’t just famous people. It was ordinary people, women,” said guest curator Sean Gibson, the great-grandson of Negro League slugger Josh Gibson, who was voted into the baseball Hall of Fame even though henever played in the major leagues.

One picture in the exhibit shows players in the dugout and the nearby fans.

“These fans here, they’re in their nice Sunday-best outfits. So it
was like an outing for them, a date. You don’t see fans like that
    nowadays,” Gibson said.

‘Scandal’ Star Columbus Short In Bar Fight
    Cops Investigating
3/25/2014 9:00 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

Columbus Short — who plays gladiator Harrison Wright on “Scandal” — was involved in a bar fight in which the other guy ended up in the hospital and cops are now conducting a criminal investigation.

Law enforcement sources tell TMZ … Short was at Gabe’s Bar and Grill in L.A. on March 15 at around 10:45 PM celebrating a couple’s engagement … when he started arguing at the bar with another partygoer.

We’re told the other guy pissed Short off by making a comment along the lines of, “You might be richer than me but I get my girls to buy me everything I want including your wife.”

An eyewitness tells TMZ Columbus then came up from behind and sucker punched the guy. The eyewitness says the man’s nose was broken and he was rendered unconscious for several minutes.
We’re told Columbus quickly left the bar.

An ambulance came and took the 37-year-old man to a nearby hospital.

Cops are now investigating a criminal battery.

It’s not the first time Columbus used his fists to make a point. In March, 2010 … Columbus was playing basketball at an L.A. Fitness gym when he got into an argument with another player and socked the guy in the face, knocking several teeth out.

Meet the parents spending thousands on kiddie couture
    By Jane Ridley March 24, 2014 | 9:03pm

Eyeing the spring collections at Barneys, Brooklyn fashionista Priscilla Monteiro picks out a couple of sheer tulle dresses that have just the right amount of sparkle and sophistication.

She is jetting off to the Cannes Film Festival in May to attend a swanky music industry party aboard a luxury yacht on the French Riviera.

But these pieces — each with a price tag of $1,420 — are not for Monteiro to wear herself. A girl’s size 6 and a toddler size 2, the Bonnie Young outfits are for her adorable daughters.

now….what could this tea party rethug in Mississippi, possibly mean by this? An “old America”……”that culture”….I can’t quite figure out what he means..any of you know??
McDaniel’s pitch is a warning and a call to arms. “Millions in this country feel like strangers in this land. You recognize that don’t you? An old America is passing away; a new America rising to take its place. We recoil from that culture. It’s foreign to us. It’s offensive to us,” McDaniel said; his cadence wouldn’t have been out of place on stage at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre.

Of the current environment, he said: “When we abdicate our self-government, when we surrender it to politicians and bureaucrats 1,000 miles away, it is essentially akin to repealing that early American revolution.” McDaniel rails against a system that Cochran has for decades used to funnel money back to Mississippi, one of the poorest states in the nation.
McDaniel has stumbled over questions about federal money. Earlier this year, he hedged when asked whether he would have voted for the Katrina disaster relief bill, a measure that many in Mississippi say saved the state from near ruin. His campaign quickly corrected his record in a statement, saying he would have voted “yes.”

    • Kennymack1971

I think Jamelle is looking for a come up and Ta-Nehisi Coates has shown the way: Impress the Libertarian audience at the Atlantic and Slate. Show them you’re not like those Obots. Look at who swoons for this bullshit…EmoProgs and EmoNegroes. What’s funny is they’re quick to cape up for Paul Ryan and Rummy but will trash President Obama for things he didn’t even say. These negroes really ain’t shit.

    • Adriane Farray

Look, in the current media landscape, being too closely associated with black folks will not advance your career. So what’s an ambitious black columnist to do? I know, cape for powerful white folks. Hence, we are treated to the grimy spectacle of groveling Negro scribblers like Bouie and Coates caping for unapologetic racists like Rumsfeld and Ryan respectively. And to make matters worse, the opprobrium these two jive time wanna be opinion makers will be met with in the AA community will only add to their cred among the white hipster readership they so obviously covet. Ta-Nehisi Coates slanders Barack Obama by comparing him to Paul Ryan and his readers twist themselves into pretzels trying to vindicate him. That they are more interested in defending their pet Negro than PBO should give us all pause. We have to control our own message and speak for ourselves and not let outside mediators distort our truth.

Pentagon says Congress’ multiple Benghazi investigations cost military millions
    By DONNA CASSATA, Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon says Congress’ multiple investigations of the deadly 2012 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, have cost the department millions of dollars and thousands of hours of personnel time.

In a March 11 letter, the Pentagon described repetitive requests for information from about 50 congressional hearings, briefings and interviews. The department was responding to a Feb. 4 letter from Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state, the top Democrat on the House Armed Services Committee.

The Sept. 11 assault killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens. An independent review and bipartisan Senate Intelligence committee report have mainly faulted the State Department and the security at the mission.

Smith, in a subsequent letter to the committee’s Republican chairman, complained about the financial strain on the military.

you wanted to know who the gentleman was in the overalls marching with Dr. King in that picture.

    It was James Forman.

James Forman (October 4, 1928 – January 10, 2005) was an American Civil Rights leader active in the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, the Black Panther Party, and the International Black Workers Congress. He received a master’s degree in African and Afro-American studies from Cornell University
in 1980 and a Ph.D from the Union of Experimental Colleges and
Universities with the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington, D.C.
After founding James Forman and Associates, a political consulting
group, he ran unsuccessfully for Democratic Party Senator from the
District of Columbia in support of statehood. During the 1990s, he
taught at American University, the University of the District of Columbia and Morgan State University in Baltimore.[1] He was also the author of several notable books.

Sanctions Will Work, All Right. Just Ask the Oligarchs
    By Owen Matthews
    Filed: 3/25/14 at 7:15 AM | Updated: 3/25/14 at 1:02 PM

On the face of it, Western sanctions against Russia in the wake of the annexation of the Crimea look weak, ridiculous and possibly illegal.

President Barack Obama, who has supposedly taken the toughest line in condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin’s “aggression,” has merely declared banking sanctions on a dozen Russian businessmen personally close to Putin. The European Union’s list of sanctioned Russian officials has been shorter still, prompting an outcry against Europe’s—and particularly Britain’s—feeble response.

“London is Russia’s tawdry bitch,” tweeted British-born Columbia University history professor Simon Schama, furious at British politicians kowtowing to London financial district lawyers and bankers grown fat on Russian money.

But in truth, there’s some deep thinking behind Washington’s sanctions regime, and they could ultimately prove deadly to Putin’s future.

The key to the sanctions strategy is to drive a wedge between Putin’s shrinking inner circle and the wider Russian elite. That intimate circle is composed mostly of former KGB cronies “willing to sacrifice Russia’s newfound economic prosperity on the altar of imperial ambition,” says Brian Whitmore, author of The Power Vertical blog.

But most Russian businessmen are not. They have reaped the benefits of Russia’s engagement with the world economy over the past decade and are not ready to follow their leaders into economic isolation.

    • qosine

      Putin’s gonna learn.
“But most Russian businessmen are not. They have reaped the benefits of Russia’s engagement with the world economy over the past decade and are not ready to follow their leaders into economic isolation.”

  • rikyrah

Wherein I go on a little rant

Well kids, our never-ending election season is about to shift into high gear. And it’s an off-year election, a midterm if you will, which occurs every two years in between the only elections which Democratic voters seem to think matter. Which means we’re hearing it from the usual quarters that “Both parties are the same” or “elections don’t matter” or “I voted for Obama—isn’t that enough.”

Don’t like Diane Feinstein? Well, she’s not my favorite cup of tea either.

Don’t like Mark Pryor? Yeah, he’s kind of not my favorite Democrat.

Don’t like the Blue Dogs who will try to wrest control of the House away from Teabaggers? No, they may not be what Markos Moulitsas calls “better Democrats”.

But you know what? I don’t give a fuck.

Democrats like Feinstein and Pryor will make sure that Harry Reid remains Majority Leader, and sets the agenda in the Senate. The Blue Dogs so disparaged by those on the Purity Left gave Nancy Pelosi the gavel from 2007 to 2011 and allowed President Obama to get ACA passed and Don’t Ask Don’t Tell repealed. And if they win in November, Pelosi will again be Speaker, and actual legislation will once again move.

So, please, spare me your scruples. Spare me the “not good enough” speech.

The only thing which should be on the mind of any Democratic or Democratic-leaning voter should be crushing the GOP in both House and Senate come November.

Actually, let me amend that. The first thing on our minds should be… VOTING.

    — — – –Grand Total as of March 25, 2014: (12.2 M – 15.8 M) :>)

    – – – – – — –☺One final update for today, just under the wire: Kentucky reports that QHPs are up to 66K, Medicaid up to 266.4K. That’s an increase of 1,509 QHPs and 8,911 Medicaid enrollments in 4 days.

    — — – – – — ☺A huge turnaround from last week, when it looked
like WA was starting to slow down. Exchange QHPs are up from 112,225 as of 3/13 to 125,207 as of 3/23…an increase of 12,982 in 10 days
(not quite the “past week” described in the press release, unless it took the first 3 days for 901 of them to go through).
The impact on the projection chart is equally dramatic: Washington State has now gone from running 37% below February’s daily average to 25% higher than February did.

    — — – ☺UPDATE: HOLD THE PHONE…This just in from Access Health CT’s Twitter feed:
RT @AccessHealthCT Our Grand Total is already over 174,000 Blowing way past our orginal goal. #EnrollCT -kc

    – — – -☺Minnesota just broke through their own goal of 135K total enrollments.
The 36,176 exchange QHPs are only up 566 from 35,610 from 4 days
earlier, but the combined Medicaid number (100,598) is up 4,731
    from 95,867.
