Who are the optimists these days?

Frank Bruni is pessimistic about America.

More and more I get the sense that we’ve lost it, and by “it” I mean the optimism that was always the lifeblood of this luminous experiment, the ambition that has been its foundation, the swagger that made us so envied and emulated and reviled.

We’re walking small. And that shift in our gait and our gumption has been palpable for many years, during an unusually sustained period of frustration that has the feel of something more than a temporary dive: a turned corner, the downward arc of a diminished enterprise.

To bolster his case, Bruni quotes his friends – most of whom are other NYT writers and columnists. Given the current demise of print media, that shouldn’t be too surprising. But I suspect he’s also speaking for a lot of – here comes the kicker – white Americans.

The very basis of white privilege is that it means not having to listen to the thoughts/opinions/experiences of people of color. If Bruni were to listen, he’d hear a different story. For example, three years ago, Ellis Cose wrote about The New Optimists.

African-Americans, long accustomed to frustration in their pursuit of opportunity and respect, are amazingly upbeat, consistently astounding pollsters with their hopefulness. Earlier this year, when a Washington Post–Kaiser–-Harvard poll asked respondents whether they expected their children’s standard of living to be better or worse than their own, 60 percent of blacks chose “better,” compared with only 36 percent of whites.

And apparently its not just African Americans who are optimistic.

The AP-NORC analysis of data from the General Social Survey, a long-running biannual survey conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, found just 46 percent of whites say their family has a good chance of improving their living standard given the way things are in America, the lowest level in surveys conducted since 1987. In contrast, 71 percent of blacks and 73 percent of Hispanics express optimism of an improved life – the biggest gap with whites since the survey began asking.

      Love the “bingo, gringo” line.

    • TresL

What does it say about white folks when their happiest times are the worst times for POC and now that POC are optimistic about the future they’re pessimistic. Ain’t that America, land that I love.

      • Kennymack1971

Thank you. 2520s are so predictable. NOW they’re pessimistic. GTFOHWTBS.

        • itgurl_29

All that Native American genocide, and slaver, and Jim Crow, and whatnot couldn’t bring them down. But the playing field starting to widen for ALL Americans? Devastating. It’s the worst of times for them. Losing out on a job to a person of color is, like, worse than slavery, people!

      • itgurl_29

Preach. They are something, aren’t they. SMH, sad.

        • TresL

The good old days for them were the fifties which happen to be one of many times in history where black people were catching hell from every direction.

          • Aquagranny911

…and the government’s “Operation Wetback” was in full force when a lot of actual citizens also got dumped into Mexico during the raids…and McCarthy was in Congress chasing communists which included anyone standing for the rights of workers…

            Oh, those good old days….

          • Women as second class citizens, duck and cover drills, half the country practicing open apartheid the other a more insidious version, J Edwina Hoover taping your phone calls, one quarter of the country living in abject poverty.

I see some Hilary stans in my twitter timeline already trying it on with their “you betta support her in 2016 or else” if she’s the nominee.

    • Kennymack1971

I actively dislike much of the Clinton camp but this racist woman I despise with the fury of a thousand suns. She couldn’t just be disappointed that her chosen candidate lost no she had to actively smear Barack Obama with as much gusto as any RWNJ. This is who Hillary Clinton aligns herself with and it’s yet one more reason I will NEVER support her candidacy.

      • TresL

ITA! I think this woman was only saying publicly what the Clintons themselves were saying and continue to say privately.

        • Kennymack1971

No doubt. Rothschild, Ferraro, Harriet Christian… There was a pattern of racist behavior that was never condemned by the Clintons and that’s because they have the same attitudes towards the Obamas.

          • itgurl_29

That pattern is real. They’re only saying what Hillary says to them in their conversations as friends.

The undercover senator: Tim Scott goes anecdote shopping in South Carolina

As they talk, an older white woman wanders over and asks, “You here for court-ordered time?”

“Not this time,” the volunteer says. What he neglects to mention is that his name is Tim Scott, that he’s a United States senator — her senator — and that he’s up for reelection in the fall. For now, Scott’s main objective is just to get elected — likely without much help from the black vote. Instead, he’ll need to win over legions of white voters.
Just a few miles away from the Goodwill, there’s the Greenville Museum and Library of Confederate History, a place where the director, Mike Couch, will tell you that slavery was in fact not racist.

“It was a matter of economics, most likely,” Couch says. He walks over to a wall covered with pictures of black confederate soldiers. “We judge people by character, not skin color.”

Couch, who is white, is a fan of Scott’s.

“I’ll vote for him, sure,” he says. “He’s better than the other guy, Flimsy Lindsey Grahamnesty” — South Carolina’s other Republican senator, who is often accused by conservatives of being too moderate on such issues as immigration reform.

Scott’s election would make history, but not everyone thinks it would be a step forward.

“If you call progress electing a person with the pigmentation that he has, who votes against the interest and aspirations of 95 percent of the black people in South Carolina, then I guess that’s progress,” says Rep. Jim E. Clyburn, a black congressman who serves in the state’s Democratic leadership.

Scott got an F on the NAACP annual scorecard. He voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, he voted to hold Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. in contempt of Congress, opposed the Congressional Black Caucus’s budget proposal and voted to delay funding a settlement between the United States and black farmers who claimed the federal government refused them loans.

Hilary Shelton, the NAACP’s Washington Bureau Director, says it’s great that Scott is reaching out to the community with messages of self-determination and religion, but that it’s not enough.

“He’s not running for preacher,” Shelton says. “We can tell when people are coming to sell snake oil.”

Her take is that Nigerian officials thought they could mostly ignore this by saying “so sad, too bad” like they have done with raids like this in the past. That whole region has been terrorized & over run by these Bohoscum pendejos who raid & run back across the borders. They have been killing people & stealing/raping women & girls for too long with nada being done.

The Other Side of Privilege at Princeton[OPINION]

When I read Tal Fortgang’s article in The Princeton Tory (a publication that is bankrolled by a wealthy non-profit dedicated to grooming young Conservative leaders), where he now famously stated that he has no need to apologize for having privilege as a White male, I wasn’t surprised. However, after seeing him on Fox and reading his article republished by Time, I, like the rest of the Black community at Princeton, started to grow more incensed. As a graduating senior who has been at this institution longer than he has, I’ve grown tired of being afraid as a Black woman to talk about privilege within this ivy-covered bubble and have decided to respond.

When talking about privilege, or lack thereof, one must persistently be aware that there is a huge difference between the individual and the collective. I learned this distinction the hard way. Two years ago, I was accepted as an opinion writer for The Daily Princetonian. At the time, I was the only Black woman on staff. In my first opinion article, I argued that Princeton University’s creative writing programs should change its selective, application-only admissions to a more inclusive open enrollment that welcomed all interested students. The first comment on my piece was submitted by an anonymous individual who said that I should’ve been rejected from Princeton because the university doesn’t need any more “whiny Black girls.” It took the moderator several hours to delete the comment even though my supporters bombarded him with emails about the vitriol. My picture was not next to my article, only my name. Not once did I mention race or gender in the article. Yet, for the offense of expressing my opinions on a subject, my racial and gender identity were ridiculed. It was then that I realized that while I may be an individual, I am a part of a larger social category—Black women. Because of this identity, some of my peers believe that I don’t belong and refuse to listen to my voice.

By DARLENE SUPERVILLE— May. 6, 2014 5:38 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama said Tuesday that the U.S. will do everything it can to help Nigeria find nearly 300 teenage girls who have been missing since they were abducted from school three weeks ago by an Islamist extremist group that has threatened to sell them.

Finding the girls is the immediate priority, Obama said, and dealing with the Boko Haram group is a close second.

“In the short term our goal is obviously is to help the international community, and the Nigerian government, as a team to do everything we can to recover these young ladies,” Obama said in an interview with Al Roker of NBC’s “Today” program. “But we’re also going to have to deal with the broader problem of organizations like this that … can cause such havoc in people’s day-to-day lives.”

Some fast figures for any winger acquaintances.

If we’re doing an apples to apples comparison of Administrations…

Bush’s first Benghazi took place on 09/11/2001, and resulted in the loss of 2,996 American lives, or the equivalent of one Obama Benghazi per day, every day, for more than 2-years.

Bush used his first Benghazi to gin up support for his second Benghazi: the Iraq invasion, which resulted in the loss of 4,400 American lives.

His third Benghazi, the bungled Katrina response, saw the loss of another 1,500 American lives, at which point, the public finally turned against his homicidal incompetence.

So, in terms of body counts, we have Bush 8,900 – Obama 4.

Now which one did the Republicans call a scandal?

    • qosine

      Exactly JB.
You always lay out the facts.
      Thank you.

    • Aquagranny911

Very sad comparison but so on point. JB, I think the vast majority of Americans don’t give a ripe fig about Benghazi & they probably could not spell it correctly if you gave them a prize. A lot are still wanting jobs & the minimum wage raised, some have been without UI & have dealt with SNAP cuts since November, some would be so happy at a real immigration reform because it might protect their loved ones. These people do not give a SHIT about Benghazi!

      Just saying…

    • AxelFoley

Not to mention the 12, I think, embassy/consulate attacks on Bush’s watch.

Nary a peep from the media/GOP (but I repeat my self) on that.

  • Aquagranny911

I am starting to get muy, muy pissed off! Who really outside the media beltway & the Repugs gives one flying rotted fig about Hillbillygoats’s chances for the White House in 2016!

We have major, way more important elections coming in less than 5 months, in our states, in our cities, our school boards, our damn dogcatchers for Dios sake! We need to get DEM butts in the seats of congress! We need DEM butts in our state houses! We need DEM Governors! We need DEMS on our school boards!

The goatfiggers, Kochs & their evil press minions would love to see us distracted by Clinton sludge. I say NO & more NO WAY to that BS! I say FUCK THE CLINTONS with ten rusty pitch forks!

We keep our eyes on the prize, our boots firmly on the ground for Dems these next 5 months & the Clintons will fade away! Just saying…

My two pesos…rant over…but DAMMIT…pay some attention to my words!

    • qosine

All of this stuff is designed to demoralize, distract, and
derail Dems from voting and winning in 2014. Every single
GOP candidate is ideologically the same, whether they’re
billed establishment, right, far right, or far far right. They
hate our president, his allies, his policies, the Obama coalition, and will use any means to divide Dems to avoid our wins.

      • Aquagranny911

Exactly, Chica, Exactly!!! We need to keep this always firmly in our minds as we continue to move on to elect Dems this November.

Just a small OT: I know I will be working without my Sis by my side this year. It’s hard for me but if I can do this so can you all get out even if you are all alone. Do your best to elect your local Dems.

Because the story CAN get even more insane.
    V. Stiviano, media darling of Clippers owner Donald Sterling scandal, being investigated in extortion plot: report

The legal bombshell dropped after it was revealed Stiviano adopted two boys and has been keeping them out of the media spotlight. TMZ.com reports Stiviano may have demanded money from Sterling to keep other controversial audio tapes secret.
BY NANCY DILLON Tuesday, May 6, 2014, 8:17 PM

She’s going to need three visors soon — and possibly a criminal defense lawyer.

    V. Stiviano, the woman at the center of the Donald Sterling racism scandal, is in the final stages of adopting two boys age12 and 13, a source told the Daily News Tuesday.

“She’s excited to care for them for the rest of her life. The process started three years ago,” the source said. “She’s going to make a great mom.”

The news broke as TMZ.com reported Stiviano is under investigation for allegedly extorting Sterling by demanding money in return for keeping more audio recordings secret.

A senior investigator for the Los Angeles District Attorney reportedly contacted Sterling’s wife Shelly Sterling Tuesday to ask for an interview in connection with the extortion allegation, unidentified law enforcement sources told TMZ.

Stiviano, 31, declined to comment when contacted by The News outside her Los Angeles duplex Tuesday.

Plouffe Sees Hillary Clinton Crowding Out Other Democrats
By Lisa Lerer Apr 25, 2014 11:01 PM CT

No Democrat will likely be able to mount a serious challenge to Hillary Clinton in the next presidential campaign if she decides to run, David Plouffe, President Barack Obama’s former top political adviser, said

Plouffe, who was a strategist for both of Obama’s presidential campaigns and served as a senior adviser in the White House, said “there’s very little oxygen” for another Democrat to challenge the former secretary of state in the 2016 presidential primaries.

“If someone runs, it’s really to just try and set themselves up for the future,” Plouffe said in an interview on Bloomberg Television’s “Political Capital with Al Hunt,” airing this weekend. “Build their name, get a show on MSNBC.”

    • Alma98

uh huh nothing but the truth. Hillary and company are trying to discourage other candidates from running.

      • qosine

Wondering what Plouffe and PBO are up to.
PBO brought up VP Joe and Hillary in interesting
ways at the WHPC. The GOP knows PBO selected
Hillary as his SOC so Benghazi is a way to diminish
that. Plus, when I skim comments, I see VP Joe’s
name pop up a lot. Keeps the GOP off balance all
the time cause the GOP have nothing to say, nothing
to run on, and nothing to offer. IMHO, Alma. PBO
        always plays the long game.

        • edp4bho

I sure hope you’re right about this, qosine. I just don’t feel like the bs. I want PBO to complete his term with aplomb, and for people not to be taken in by this appearance of inevitability of a Clinton dynasty. 12 years- a Bush; 8 years- Clinton. Nuf is enuf !!

          • qosine

I totally understand, edp4bho. I’ve been so down lately with all the hits to PBO, but I know
that every time the media, the GOP, and all the
other swill start this bs, PBO never responds. Except, except now attention — rightfully and finally – is being turned to the tragic kidnapping of the girls in Nigeria. HE’S the one who put that on page 1.

        • jds09

I hope you’re right. I think something is going on too. Biden holding the running shoe was funny and I hope a signal.

        • isonprize

you noticed that too, huh? re: VP Joey and Hillz. I still think Joey is going to run. At least, that’s what I’m dreaming…

    • edp4bho

“Build their name, get a show on MSNBC.”

That’s pretty cheap for him to say. F Hillary and him too if they think she has so much damn support. After the goods are out come next year, lots of folks are gonna turn if they have any self respect. And I am not afraid of who may be prez next as much as I am her “coronation” overshadowing the rest of PBO’s term. I lasted through Bush, for heaven’s sake. Again, F the Clintons. I WILL NOT vote for them !

Sen. David Vitter Named One of the Most Corrupt Members of Congress

Sen. David Vitter has been named as one of the Most Corrupt Members of Congress by the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington in a scathing report released today.

The organization says “from misusing taxpayer funds to aid a violent criminal to blatantly trying to bribe the Secretary of the Interior, it has been another bad year for shameless Sen. David Vitter”.

In the report, the organization calls Vitter “morally and ethically bankrupt”.

“Sen. Vitter solicited prostitution, employed a known criminal, and even tried to bribe a cabinet member,” said CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan. “What will it take for the Senate Ethics Committee to take notice of Sen. Vitter’s endless misconduct?”

Questions have surfaced regarding Sen. Vitter’s relationship with aide Brent Furer. Furer served as Sen. Vitter’s legislative aide for women’s issues despite a conviction related to brutally assaulting his girlfriend in 2008. While the senator’s office claimed Furer was on leave pending resolution of the case, Senate records show he was paid for all but five days of his time off. Sen. Vitter’s office also allowed Furer to travel to Louisiana at taxpayer expense in 2007 in order to appear in court to face a DWI charge, and again in 2008 to sign his probation agreement. Only after the scandal surfaced nearly two years later did Furer resign.

“It is hard to imagine any senator, much less a “family values” politician like Sen. Vitter retaining the services of a staff member with legal problems as serious as those of Mr. Furer,: said Ms. Sloan. “Then again, Sen. Vitter’s history reveals he isn’t particularly concerned with the treatment of women.”

More recently, Sen. Vitter threatened to withhold Interior Secretary Ken Salazar’s salary increase unless he agreed to issue more deepwater drilling permits. Secretary Salazar, showing far greater integrity than Sen. Vitter, not only declined to accept the bribe, he asked the Senate to drop the bill that would have provided him a raise.

This is the 7th edition of the CREW’s Most Corrupt Report, an annual look at a bipartisan collection of Washington’s worst. This year’s list includes seven Democrats, and twelve Republicans. Five are repeat offenders. Since 2005, CREW has named 70 members of Congress to the list, 32 of whom are no longer in office. Vitter was also included in the 2007 report.

    A Promise To Rose

Teddy Bridgewater’s journey to the NFL Draft is depicted in an online mini-documentary released Tuesday by Cadillac. The doc, “Teddy Bridgewater: A Promise to Rose,” was directed by Spike Lee.

It centers on Bridgewater’s rise to stardom, stemming back from his days at Miami Northwestern Senior High School in Miami and then to Louisville. His family and friends are also heavily featured, and the doc culminates with Bridgewater fulfilling a promise he made to his mom back in the third grade: purchasing her a brand new pink Cadillac Escalade.

Bridgewater’s mother, Rose Murphy, had been diagnosed with breast cancer, so Bridgewater chose the color pink to honor her.

    — – – —Thunder star Kevin Durant wins first MVP award

    – – — –Kevin Durant has plenty of NBA scoring titles. Now, he finally has an MVP trophy to go with them.

The Oklahoma City Thunder star received the league’s top individual
honor on Tuesday, earning 119 first-place votes. Miami’s LeBron James, who won the last two MVP awards and four of the previous five, finished second with six first-place votes, and Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers was third.

Durant won his fourth scoring crown in five years this season by
averaging 32 points per game. He helped the Thunder finish the regular season with a 59-23 record, second best in the league,
-despite playing much of the season without three-time All-Star Russell Westbrook by his side because of a nagging knee injury.

“He’s been the most consistent guy all season long,” Westbrook said
at the end of the regular season. “He’s done a great job of leading us
to where we are now. He’s basically put himself in front of everybody
else in the league and shown that he’s the best player in the world.”

Ye, yay, yay, yay for teachers. The problem is that teachers in major cities all across the United States of America are under attack. They are being painted as the enemy, work rules are being ignored, budgets are being cut, students are being tested into oblivion, class sizes are being expanded. I love my President. I hate his support of Arne Duncan and the regressive policies that are in play along with Rethuglican and some Dem governors who are cutting public school funding across the country.

      • qosine

Hear, hear isonprize. Teachers and their credentials
and education are under attack as a way to divert
public funding into private schools not bound to contracts or accountability.

        • isonprize

q, don’t even get me started. Plus, charter schools are the spawn of the devil. And “Teach for America” is dreaming if they think 5 weeks is enough time for this young kids to be certified as teachers.

WE MUST PUT THE PUBLIC BACK IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS. Because, really, when you stop and think about it, public school is all most black people have as a ‘step up’ in this country.

          • qosine

Yes, yes, isonprize. This is just a way to
segregate all over again — with public money
paid with local property taxes (rent is just indirect tax, too). I hate Teach for America — it’s like missionary work for ivy kids (no way to learn in 5 months anyway, like you say). If they have their way they’d set up online-charter school chains (taking over public buildings and real estate too). They are the spawn of the devil.

    — —Obama: Lives ‘at risk’ from climate change

    – – – —President Obama warned that “people’s lives are at risk” because of man-made climate change during a series of interviews with national and local television meteorologists on Tuesday.

“Not only is climate change a problem in the future, it’s already effecting Americans,” Obama told CBS News, warning that the phenomenon was “increasing the likelihood” of floods, drought, storms and hurricanes.

The series of interviews from the Rose Garden were among a series of administration efforts to highlight the 2014 National Climate
Assessment, a new, comprehensive report that officials said details the impact of climate change on individual regions and business sectors.

The White House has said the interviews with meteorologists are designed to signal the real-world implications of climate change to Americans already closely following weather events.

Weather Channel are hooked up, I won’t click on it.
