Man cleared of NYC murder after 25 years in prison

    AP 2:42 p.m. EDT April 8, 2014

NEW YORK (AP) — A man who spent almost a quarter-century behind bars for murder was freed Tuesday and cleared of a killing that happened when he was 1,100 miles away on a Disney World vacation.

Jonathan Fleming was in tears as he hugged his lawyers and family in a Brooklyn courtroom. Relatives said, “Thank you, God!” after he was freed.

“After 25 years, come hug your mother,” she said, and he did.
    [...]
Fleming had plane tickets, videos and postcards from his trip, his lawyers said, but authorities suggested he could have been in New York at the actual time of the shooting, and a woman testified that she had seen him shoot Rush.

Julian Castro: Obama should change deportation policy
    By Cameron Joseph

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro (D), an ally of President Obama’s,
said the administration needed to revise its deportation policy.”My
hope is that his administration will go about it in a different way.
I’m not comfortable with the number of deportations,” Castro said when
asked during a civil rights panel at the Lyndon B. Johnson Memorial
Library in Austin about recent criticism from liberals that the Obama
administration had been deportating too many illegal immigrants.

“My hope is that just like he did with [easing childhood deportations], the president will find ways that are within his power, that are
constitutional, to ease the level of deportations,” Castro continued.

I appreciate how he answered in a respectful way and didn’t engage in the hyperbole we see from so many of our supposed allies.

      • qosine

I totally agree Miranda. This is the way to answer.
        Very supportive. Very impressive.

        • Miranda

I especially liked the way he phrased that last sentence. He carefully made sure to include that any change would have to be within PBO’s power and constitutional…so many others just make blanket demands full of exaggerated claims about what the President can do. I think Mayor Castro is ready for prime time for real. His future is bright.

A Boy, His Granddad and the Monumental Courage of Henry Aaron

    by Joe Samuel Starnes

…I learned years later from his 1991 autobiography that he had been uneasy about race relations from the moment the Braves moved to Atlanta.

“We couldn’t be completely comfortable,” he wrote. “It was made perfectly clear to us that we weren’t in Milwaukee anymore. There was often a hate letter or two in the mail, and I was always concerned about Barbara [his first wife] and the kids being abused when they went to the ballpark.”

As it became evident in the early ’70s that Aaron could surpass Ruth, the hate mail increased exponentially, and came from all over the country.

“Dear Nigger,” one letter read. “Everybody loved Babe Ruth. You will be the most hated man in America if you break his career home run record.”

Another: “Dear Super Spook. First of all, I don’t care for the color of shit. You are pretty damn repugnant trying to break Babe Ruth’s record. You boogies will think that you invented baseball or something.”

He received many death threats during the record chase. The FBI evaluated the most dangerous ones, and two Atlanta Police detectives were hired to serve as his bodyguards…

    • Worldwatcher7

Those hate letters are dripping with fear. “Oh no, the powerful Black man is going to surpass our hero.”

Clovis: Obama’s race shields him from impeachment
Hinton Republican, former radio host, says he can talk language of GOP base
By DOUGLAS BURNS April 8, 2014

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Sam Clovis, a firebrand northwest Iowa conservative, says he believes many congressional Republicans want to impeach President Obama. The only thing standing in their way, Clovis said in an interview, is the color of the president’s skin.

“I would say there are people in the House of Representatives right now that would very much like to take the opportunity to start the process,” Clovis said of impeaching the nation’s first African-American president. “And I think the reason that they’re not is because they’re concerned about the media.”

In an interview with the Daily Times Herald, Clovis, who did not provide reasons for why the president would be vulnerable to impeachment, said the media would cover the issues surrounding such proceedings differently with a black president than a white one with the same record.

Obamacare is widening the gap between ‘red’ and ‘blue’ America
By Joshua Holland, Moyers & Company
    Tuesday, April 8, 2014 8:07 EDT

The fact that the citizens of “red” and “blue” states live in what are essentially two countries with very different governments has largely flown under the radar, but it may become the defining story of our time. The two major parties are not only highly polarized ideologically, but as Dan Balz noted in The Washington Post, “polarization has ushered in a new era in state government, where single-party control of the levers of power has produced competing Americas.” Three-quarters of US states are now controlled by one of the two major parties — the most in 60 years — and “officials in these states are moving unencumbered to enact their party’s agenda.”

When the Supreme Court ruled that states could decline Obamacare’s Medicaid expansion without facing a penalty, the justices set in motion a process that’s now pushing our two countries even further apart as about half of the states passed on the opportunity to insure their poorer residents.

Anatomy of a Media Attack: ABC News, Fox News, and CNN on White House and Equal Pay
Tommy Christopher on April 08, 2014

On this Equal Pay Day, it is instructive to see how the mainstream media constructs an attack on the White House and disguises it as good old-fashioned adversarial journalism. One clip you’ve probably seen all day today is of cable news hosts debating the talking point about a supposed gender pay gap among the White House staff, whichconservatives raise annually in an attempt to undermine the President’s commitment to pay equity, and the notion of pay equity itself. The figure that The American Enterprise Institute is using this year, 88 cents on every dollar, comes from comparing the median annual salary of women who work in the White House, to the median annual salary of their male colleagues.

The AEI report deliberately ignores whether the men and women at the White House are being paid the same amount for the same jobs, because they’re trying to critique President Obama’s use of a similar statistic in his speeches about equal pay. Whether you agree with the critique or not, it is a mildly clever one, and well within the bounds of a partisan think tank. Besides, when two different reporters tag-teamed White House Press Secretary Jay Carney about it on Monday, Carney explained, clear as a bell, that women in the White House get paid exactly the same as men for the same jobs. Clear as a bell. Jon Karl brought up the AEI study, and Carney explained the gap as a function of looking at the aggregate of all staffers, including the most junior, but that “men and women in equivalent roles here earn equivalent salaries. For example, we have two deputy chiefs of staff, one man and one woman, and they earn the same salary. We have 16 department heads, over half of them are women, all of whom make the same salary as their male counterparts.”

Fox News’ Ed Henry followed up, shortly thereafter, by summarizing that “you’re basically saying that women at the senior levels here make equal or more than men, but if you’re at the lower level and you’re a woman on the White House staff, you don’t make as much?”

“No, that would be a misreading and misinterpretation of what I said,” Carney replied, clear as a bell. “Everybody at every level here at the White House is paid the same for the same work, male or female.”

Apparently, not clearly enough for Ed, who asked “So how do we get to the 88 cents?

Race is being looked at’ as a possible motive in attack on driver in Detroit
By Stephanie Gallman and Kevin Conlon, CNN
updated 9:17 PM EDT, Tue April 8, 2014

(CNN) — Three suspects were charged Tuesday for their alleged roles in a vicious mob beating of a Detroit tree trimmer after a car accident last week.

Bruce Edward Wimbush Jr., 17, Wonzey Saffold, 30, and James Deontae Davis, 24, are three of the dozen or so people who attacked Steven Utash after he inadvertently struck a 10-year-old boy who had stepped into a road, Detroit Police Sgt. Michael Woody said.

Utash, a 54-year-old grandfather, immediately stopped his vehicle to help the boy and was allegedly “severely beaten” with “fists and feet,” Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said in a news release.

He’s been in a medically induced coma since.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig wouldn’t go so far as to the attack a “hate crime,” but, he said, “the issue of race is being looked at” as a possible motive.

He gave credit to a woman who stepped in as Utash was being attacked, CNN affiliate WDIV reported.

“Just her presence, offering aid to this gentleman, may have saved his life,” Craig said.

That woman, Deborah Hughes, met Utash’s son to talk about what happened.

“I went to your dad and he was unconscious. He wasn’t doing anything,” she said, WDIV reported. “I go over there and I say, ‘Don’t nobody else hit him. Don’t put your hands on him. Leave him alone!’ And everybody backed up and let me go to work on your dad,” said Hughes, a retired nurse.

Agreed. Sometimes black folks display a wanton need to retaliate against whites for all the blatant racism directed toward us, so much that they react as victims rather than regarding a situation just as it is. This happened some years ago when a white man ran up on the sidewalk of some address, injuring (if not killing) someone. It was an accident but the blacks in the area pounced on him. Stop, look, and listen !!

UConn senior Shabazz Napier delivers strong message to the NCAA

Shabazz Napier made sure he had everyone’s attention following his team’s NCAA Championship win Monday night against Kentucky.

Napier’s UConn Huskies had just held off the Wildcats 60-54, but Napier had something to say to the crowd, those watching on TV and the world:

“Ladies and Gentleman, you’re looking at the hungry Huskies,” Napier proclaimed to CBS Sports’ Jim Nantz. “This is what happens when you ban us. Last year. Two years – we worked so hard for it.”

Napier was referring to UConn’s postseason ban last season due to low Academic Progress Rate scores. The ban provided more than enough fuel to deliver the school its 4th-ever national title.

According to USA TODAY Sports’ Paul Myerberg, the ban was “largely a measurement of past Huskies, not the then-current team.”

CBS quickly cut away to a crowd shot, during the tail end of Napier’s remarks. Nantz hastily declared Napier the Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.

Last week, Napier told FOX Sports it was “kind of great” that Northwestern University football players were making the push to unionize. The senior point guard added that there were some nights he went to bed “starving,” because he didn’t have money to eat.

The comments didn’t really catch on until right before the title game Monday; Napier is set to graduate in May.
