A year after killing, Trayvon Martin’s father says parents will ‘never move on’
The father of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager shot to death in Florida last year, said Tuesday that the family will “never move on” and will fight to make sure his memory “won’t be tainted by this whole situation.”
On the anniversary of his son’s killing, Tracy Martin also said that lawmakers across the country must take a hard look at gun laws and who should get gun permits. He cited not just his son’s death but the elementary-school massacre in Newtown, Conn.
I agree 100% with Tracy Martin. I see Trayvon as akin to those kids in Newton, minding their business until a highly unlucky and chance encounter with an armed lunatic resulted in disaster for them and their families. The media and the far right will never convince me otherwise about Trayvon.
Just heard Zimmerman’s brother in an interview on NPR and the denial of what occurred is just palpable.
I’ve had the misfortune of seeing this brother’s twitter account, and let’s just say that it’s a sign of how much NPR has fallen off that his sick psycho ass got an interview on that station in the first place (of course I’m blocked as is anyone sympathetic to the child who his even more sick brother murdered).
I’ve always supported public money for Public Broadcasting and still support it for PBS but NPR is really working my last nerve.
how can they move on. they lost their child senselessly.
So sad. I cannot even begin to understand what his Parents are going through today.

Company suspends man accused of sending harassing e-mails to Rep. Fields
An Englewood consulting service said Tuesday it has suspended the man arrested for sending e-mails laced with profanity and racial and sexual epithets to state Rep. Rhonda Fields.
Franklin Glenn Sain, 42, was arrested Friday on suspicion of harassing Fields, D-Aurora, and unlawfully attempting to influence a public official.
“We are shocked to learn of these allegations and are taking this matter very seriously,” SofTec Solutions Inc.’s human resources director Laura Franklin wrote in an e-mailed statement.
“If true, these actions are highly inappropriate and will not be tolerated.”

Quvenzhané Wallis Deserves Better
Last night’s Oscar broadcast was more or less what I expected. Standard issue sophomoric humor and frat boy irreverence set to music and soft shoe dance routines by Seth McFarlane, check. An excessively long broadcast that felt every second of three hours long, check. Glorious gowns and fantastic performances by a few of my favorite musical artists, CHECK. Look out for a positive review of the enjoyable, glamorous aspects of the Oscars later. Right now I need to address the undeserved issues surrounding one special person in attendance last night.
When Quvenzhané Wallis looks back on her first Oscar experience, what will she remember?
Alright alright. Who else remembers the 90s block of Martin at 8pm, Living Single at 8:30 and NY Undercover at 9pm? Don’t lie, ya know all the words to the theme song from Martin and Living Single. But who remembers that Living Single had a longer theme song at the beginning of Season 1?
OT, but important to read:

Rapper Chuck D. On CNN: ‘Since Reagan And Bush, There’s Been Nothing But Guns And Drugs In The Black Community’
Hip hop artist Chuck D., famous for his work with the group Public Enemy, appeared on CNN with Carol Costello to discuss the impact that the slaying of Trayvon Martin had on the nation one year later. Chuck D. told Costello, that when he was growing up, there were no guns in the black community. However, after 1980 and the rise of the Ronald Reagan/George Bush-era, he says that “there’s been nothing but guns and drugs in the black community.”

—– Why Everything Republicans Are Saying About The Sequester Is Wrong – –
——— –Barring a last minute Congressional compromise, $85 billion in automatic across-the-board cuts will go into effect in the next 72 hours as a result of the sequester mechanism included in the 2011 Budget Control Act.
Republicans — many of whom voted for the BCA and have for years championed deep spending reductions — are hoping to blame the Democrats and President Obama for the consequences of the cuts, claiming that if “bad things” happen as a result of sequester, “it’s because [Obama] wants them to.” As the nation moves closer to the March 1 deadline, here is your guide to the GOP spin on the sequester:
1. We need spending cuts to get the economy going. The GOP claims that government spending is out of control and reason that reducing spending would spur greater economic growth. But government expenditures have grown at its slowest pace since the Eisenhower administration under President Obama and the latest projections from the Congressional Budget Office show that the nation’s deficits have shrunk by trillions of dollars, and the debt is close to being stabilized as a percentage of the economy. – — -SNIP – —
2. Agencies need more flexibility to avoid cuts in crucial services — –
— -3. The federal spending will still be higher next year.
— – -4. These are very modest cuts. The reductions may not mean much for wealthy Congressman, but states will lose funding for education, job training, health care, and a plethora of other services, jeopardizing assistance for low-income and middle class families alike and threatening the economic recovery.
THERE IS MORE.
—- — — -COMMENT: – – – –Dan Lee
The GOP argument flies in the face of reality. Addition by subtraction, adding jobs by cutting jobs, prosperity thru austerity, up is down, cold is hot, stupid is smart. This is positively Orwellian, and distinctly Republican! –
WELL WELL WELL where do we start ?
February 2013 Ratings Dayside strong for MSNBC, BUT Prime time slips
4PM’s “Martin Bashir” was up in both total (+21%) and demo (+31%) viewers, as was 12 PM’s “Now” which was up +8% in total viewers and +35% in the demo. “Andrea Mitchell Reports” was also up double digits in both categories. “Hardball” was up +17% and “PoliticsNation” was up +6% in the demo at 5 and 6 PM, respectively.
In primetime, “The Ed Show” was down -14% and -10% in total and demo viewers compared to last year, while “Rachel Maddow” was down -6% and -5% in those categories, respectively. At 10 PM “The Last Word” was down -7% in total viewers and -12% in the demo.
“Morning Joe” was down -5% in total viewers and -3% in the demo.
The Ed Show and Rachel are hurting O’Donnell’s ratings. Ed hyperventilates too much and Rachel thinks she’s a college professor of philosophy 101. With those lead ins, I’m shocked The Last Word didn’t dip more.
And apparently today she is going on about how the sequestration is all the President’s fault
That’s interesting that you see this. I like watching Last Word and not the 2 shows before. I also don’t like Ezra Klein subbing for Lawrence. Joy Ann Reid would do a bang-up job as his sub.
Colby Burnett, teacher from Oak Park, wins Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions

The 9-year-old was the youngest person ever to be nominated for a lead acting Oscar.
She will next appear in the film Twelve Years a Slave, and was recently cast as Annie in an upcoming remake of the classic musical.

– — Gun control supporter wins Dem primary for Jackson Jr. seat – —
– – —Riding a wave of “super PAC” spending that helped catapult her to the front of a crowded Democratic field, Robin Kelly, whose campaign called for tougher national gun laws, clinched her party’s nomination Tuesday night in a special primary election for the House seat vacated by Rep. Jesse L. Jackson Jr.
— In a contest that had been unexpectedly cast into the center of the national gun debate, the outcome was welcome news for Michael R. Bloomberg, the mayor of New York and a staunch gun-control advocate, who poured more than $2.2 million into attacking Ms. Kelly’s chief opponent, Debbie Halvorson, this month.

In the video above, you can see Moses at the 2012 Louisiana Governor’s Games absolutely destroying kids on the track in various 100, 200 and 400m races. The real reason for this post though … this gif of Moses trucking this tiny kid in one of his highlight videos.
—-WHEW!—LOOKED at other articles. —- –he DIDN’T ACCEPT.—-GOOD!! —
— —Kids are not miniature adults. By age 4, the heads of kids are 90% of adult size. However, their necks are much weaker than an adult’s neck. The combination creates a danger. When a child takes a hard blow from falling or being struck in the helmet, it is more difficult to keep the head steady. The result is greater force to the brain from being jerked inside the skull.
Kids don’t understand the risks. This is as much an ethical as a medical consideration. A teenager entering high school can make a judgment about the ups and downs of playing tackle football. He has the ability to think through the consequences himself, not as an adult would but at least with an understanding of risk and reward. The same isn’t true of a 6-year-old.
Much is not known about the long-term effects of repetitive head trauma, especially among young children. How will these kids be affected when they’re 70, or even 50?——

– – –P.S.—WHICH COLLEGE COURSE was he expected 2 PASS—–
with a 7th-GRADE—EDUCATION. geesh!
Brain trauma is no fucking joke! One reason the brain is encased in our thick skulls is to protect one of our most vulnerable & vital organs. Just being deprived of sufficient oxygen for a time can make you a rag doll like my daughter who has months of recovery now because her brain has to be retrained to do it’s work.
No parent should ever have to see their child like I saw mine a few weeks ago in an ICU with tubes everywhere. No parent should ever have to wonder if their child will walk again, even feed herself or hug her own children. No parent should have to go through this.
I don’t care if it pisses anyone off but no sport is worth putting your child at risk for brain trauma. Football is a dangerous sport, especially for the young. I have said it & I don’t care if no one agrees.
I’m with you, AG, eye to eye, Right there with you. But (no pun intended) folks are hard-headed. Until it happens to them, or someone they know, they just don’t get it.

A few days ago I saw a pic of Trayvon taken just a few days before he was killed. He was on a horse, all gangly long legs, sawing at the reins like an inexperienced rider but the look on his sweet young face was so endearing. He had a slight smile & a look of concentration that said: “I’ve got this! (I think)”
I’m sure his Mom will treasure that pic. I know I would.

Her 28-photo project features more than 40 young children posing as some of the most iconic and influential black figures from the past and the present.
From Harriet Tubman to Spike Lee, the children are seen dressed and styled like the individual they are portraying and also incorporate an inspirational quote from each particular famous person.
– —Jones, who has been a professional photographer for three years, says she was inspired to create the project for Black History Month because of her two children, Chase,4, and Amari, 7-months old.
