LOL. That’s the thing though, just about everybody in that box had a “moment” at some point. It’s called being human. *Shrug*

      • crazycanuck

yes but everybody isn’t PBO and Michelle Obama who they hate with a passion.

      LMBAO!

    • conlakappa

The archbishop is probably wondering why he’s a row behind that guy. Also too, when did the media decide that the archbishop’s English was incomprehensible? He was subtitled in a report I saw soon after the death. Huh?

      • qosine

        I understood him fine.
I really liked listening to SABC.
At first I had to adjust a bit, but then
I followed along fine, except for when
        the voices dropped low.

        • conlakappa

The man has been a guest on late-night talk shows, where there is no subtitle function. It felt very othering.

          • qosine

No kidding. He’s a very sophisticated man,
who speaks to audiences all over the place.
I thought his Benediction was great. Very
compelling — like I better do what he says!

          • conlakappa

And not just the highbrow stuff: he and Craig Ferguson were so delighted with each other that they seemed to be two old friends talking.

          • JojoRaze

I’ve heard Desmond tutu speak on TV several times. He basically has a posh English commonwealth accent.

    • malletgirl02

Laura doesn’t look too please either.

OK……doesn’t matter if you laughed at the early jokes or find it all distasteful….you WILL. LAUGH.

(repeating this from the afternoon thread)

A commenter at another site gave me a link to an extremely interesting conversation about South Africa’s land reform. Especially as 2013 marks 100 years after the 1913 legislative act which restricted the land which black people could own to 13% of the country (this resulted in massive land theft). Apparently, efforts to redress this travesty have been slow-going, to the point at which people are contemplating (and doing) land grabs, refusing to starve in their own country. This is really excellent panel discussion (the government minister makes an extremely poor showing as does the representative for commercial agriculture); for anyone with time, this is a very informative take on this issue from multiple perspectives:

    • gn

I’m watching a second video from this program and it’s striking to me, how similar the far right here and the far right in South Africa sound—and the difficulty of empowering a marginalized group when faced with race-based extremism and a sense of entitlement coming from the far right who are fighting tooth and nail to preserve their social and economic privilege (even while denying that they have any), and very reasonable impatience coming from the marginalized. The government minister in this video makes a much better showing; really interesting discussion:

      • qosine

Oh these far rights have strong ties. The ones in South
Africa are part of the far right think tank circuit. Reminds me of all the Nazis hiding out in Argentina.

        • gn

They truly are in worldwide solidarity. Same verbiage, same tricks, same willingness to torpedo an economy rather than having to abide a country which is balanced and equitable racially. Truly insane.

          • qosine

Oh, yeah, gn. Sometime in the last year,
a rancher turned evangelical from SA
showed up at my local university. Had a
pretty big crowd of white guys. Very scary
            and maddening.

          • gn

This is what underlies the dudebro attraction to gg and other libertarians. Emos who can’t abide the prospect of a racially equitable society, and the movement towards that which a black family in the WH could have represented. The backlash has been ferocious on all quarters. gg and a portion of the beltway press would rather torpedo the entire US intelligence apparatus than abide a n***er in charge of it. Just one example of many.

    • JojoRaze

I’m gonna watch these. I want to learn more about SA and not just the icon that Madiba rightfully represents.

  • gn

This point in the below link is solid and necessary as it seems like the trend to try to play down the effects that race have on inequality is accelerating, rendering the devastating effects of racism invisible and unaddressed—for example, we hear everywhere that women generally make 70 cents on the dollar—there is LEGISLATION and specific, targeted policy to address that. Meanwhile, black women make 64 cents on the dollar; an issue which IMO is met with crickets (definitely hear little about this in the media)—we must assert our voices IMO and our right to demand RACIAL equality.

U.S. lawmakers Ryan, Murray reach two-year budget deal
    WASHINGTON Tue Dec 10, 2013 5:53pm EST

Dec 10 (Reuters) – Budget negotiators in the U.S. Congress have reached a two-year agreement aimed at avoiding a government shutdown on Jan. 15 and setting federal government spending levels through Oct. 1, 2015.

Democratic Senator Patty Murray and Representative Paul Ryan scheduled a news conference for 6 p.m. EST (2300 GMT) to announce the details of the deal they worked out.

“I’m happy we’re going to avoid raising taxes, going to stay within the budget caps and in addition, have some deficit reduction,” said Senator Rob Portman, who is a member of a larger congressional budget panel. “And I’m pleased we’re going to avoid a government shutdown.”

Mel Watt confirmed as head of Housing Agency, 57-41
by The Associated PressPosted on December 10, 2013 at 4:26 PM

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats have taken advantage of their weakening of filibusters and muscled through the Senate President Barack Obama’s pick to lead a housing regulation agency.

By 57-41 Tuesday, senators confirmed Rep. Mel Watt to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

Obama nominated the North Carolina Democrat in May but he’s been in limbo ever since. Republicans have said he’s not qualified, while Democrats say the 21-year House veteran has the needed experience.

    ETA: :-)

    • gn

Truth and nothing but the truth! Congrats on enraging the far right with a simple and correct recitation of history.

    • BarbinAtlSouth

I don’t see a reason to delete that comment.

      FASCISTS!!!

      • nathkatun7

The reason is very plain: JB dared to tell the TRUTH about the real American history not the sanitized version. Goerge Washington and the rich widow he married owned over 300 hundred human beings at the time he served as the 1st President of the United States.

    • qosine

Congrats, JB for keeping history straight.

Cracks in the base? Found this on Yahoo!

As a Conservative and Obama hater, I fail to grasp this current bashing of the President, what say you?

    Retired Navy: CMAA asked

He shook hands with Fidel’s brother at the funeral for Nelson
Mandela. It is an international event, ovr 75 world leaders etc are
there. Why would you NOT shake the hand of another person?

    • jds09

Yep. They can’t help themselves now, they truly are on automatic pilot with their outrage. I think we’ll see more of this.

      • JojoRaze

And that’s the thing, we’re so used to the ‘outrage it’s now ineffective. Even the soft Obama haters are like ‘really? Y’all going at him over behaving like someone with manners on the international stage?’ O-bots even make fun of PBO doing normal stuff and haters calling for impeachment. The conservative roid-rage is played out now.

        • qosine

I really liked what she said about one powerful aspect of Mr. Mandela’s accomplishment. That is, “he cut through that binary code of the Cold War.” The world found the apartheid system that unconscionable.

  • gn

    @BVGamble
CNN is going to interview Ann Romney on what Mandela meant. And they wonder why their ratings suck

    • conlakappa

Mandela? She probably thinks that’s the name of one of her former maids who was Cape Verdean.

      • JojoRaze

Y’all are real cold this week! But you aren’t lying.

    • qosine

Huh? I’d rather hear what one of her maids thinks of Mandela.

      • conlakappa

Would love to hear if they attempted to boycott Coke and if her reaction would be to only stock it. Funny that you and and both thought of nonwhites in servitude to this woman.

No one has signs up talmbout how they voted for the other guy. Mitt Romney is a non factor even for those who voted for him. AndAnn, no one even liked her. She added nothing to Mitt’s charm. Literally. CNN, No1Curr.

    • rikyrah

      Snicker snicker

    • Aquagranny911

Why is this making me reach for Depends? CNN has completely exited the rabbit hole for the sink hole. Who gives a fig what this biscuit ‘thinks?’

    • malletgirl02

Regular CNN sucks, but CNN international is pretty good.

      • Aquagranny911

Really? That’s probably because people in other countries would not put up with the caca we endure here from our useless media.

      • jds09

Didn’t know they had both. That’s depressing. They can give us a better product, they chose not to.

        • conlakappa

Yep, it’s just the news without the extra fluff and editorializing. I used to watch CBS News when I lived in Italy: it was broadcast on TV Monaco, though it was long after her death, because Princess Grace wanted to wake up to American news. That was fluffless too, so a very short broadcast.

  • qosine

This morning, while I was watching The Mandela Service a SABC online, I’d flip the channels. CNN actually reported well, recognizing
the solemnity and joy of the event, while over at Morning Joe, the
petty chit chat, with the exception of Rev. Al, was such a stark,
contrast. I’ve always seen that show that way,but today made it
    screamingly clear.

    • Aquagranny911

I stayed with SABC. I didn’t want to waste even one moment on American media.

    • isonprize

I took a nap this afternoon now I will be up half the night. So I will be posting some random thoughts. I love Bishop Tutu. I think he is so cute. I got to shake his hand once when he visited the US. He is short for a man. I loved it! Being “vertically challenged” myself, I really enjoy not giving myself a neck cramp looking up at people. He is also so sweet & gracious with real ‘presence’ & a sense of humor. He gave a great talk. I love what he did today & he can command a crowd.

  • malletgirl02

I apologize for being negative, but I’m very dishearten by some of the some of the comments on some of the news articles on Nelson Mandela. Those comments were calling him a communist and a terrorist. What they don’t mention is that the western governments supported Apartheid, and the same posters made no mention of the brutal nature of Apartheid. They make no mention of the state violence or the right wing militia that were active during the time of Apartheid.
They act like black people should just sit back and take it in the face of brutal oppression. That we have no right have to defend ourselves.

The thing is when Mandela was released from prison South Africa was filled with violene and was the verge on a civil war. Mandela was actually responsible for saving many white people’s lives.

What gives me comfort however is I know that these people making the negative comments about Mandela will never even be 1/10 as great as him.

    • Aquagranny911

Try not to take that ugly talk to your heart. I will avoid it because I do not want to get so pissed that I go ballistic & I know I would if I read that caca.

I think that Madiba himself would tell us that does not matter because both he & we are more than what the quacking ducks say. They do not define him with their words. He made himself by what he did & was.

    • qosine

After clicking through a few channels this morning, malletgirl, while watching Mr. Mandela’s Service on SABC online, I haven’t looked at anything besides POU. I just don’t want to hear anything ugly today. The service was such a wonderful tribute and celebration that I just didn’t want to share that with anyone who doesn’t feel the same way. I’ve replayed President Obama’s eulogy and looked at happy pictures and writings of Mr. Mandela through the years.

    More random thoughts…

All this estupido about the “handshake” makes me laugh more than it angers me. Most older Latinos I know would like to see the US resume friendly relations with Cuba. Even those who don’t like Cubanos much because they get preferential immigration think it would be good. Younger people don’t know what all the fuss is about.

It is well past time we ended this nonsense & made peace with a neighbor.

    • BarbinAtlSouth

I would love for the US and Cuba come to terms and let that cold war nonsense fade away. That would also put an end to the preferential immigration. I got no problem with immigration, but no one should be able to skip over everybody else (specifically, I’m not well pleased by the treatment of Haitians compared to Cubans).

      • Aquagranny911

Agreed on the treatment of Haitians! This is just a light comment but one of my cousins is hoping for a chance to visit Cuba. She still has a total soft spot for a Cubano chico she met and dated in the ’50′s. She said he was the best dancer she ever knew. The first time they open up tourism she will be on a plane!

It is well past time that we ended this cold war!

We had an embargo against Cuba for over 40 years, and it hasn’t ended the Castro regime. Engaging Cuba will actually help the people of Cuba.

As to your comment regarding the favoritism of Cubans over other groups. Unlike people from other countries Cubans can automatically adjust status and received permanent residency after a year and a day, while people from other countries have to wait years. This is as an embarassment to the United States

That immigration treatment for Cuba has made for a lot of resentment.

        • malletgirl02

I’m not sure if you know this, but in addition to more favorable treatment in immigration matters, the U.S. government actually helps the Cubans resettle in the U.S. I’m only mentioning this is to point out the hyprocracy of Cubans who support the Republican party, and deny benefits to others, when they get many government benefits themselves.

I do know this & it does make people very angry including my own Fam when we were trying to get my SIL’s citizenship & his father’s green card.

The BS also extends to who can get visitor’s visas. The thing that finally got my SIL’s Auntie a visa to visit here was my Daughter’s near death in January. Can I say we are bitter? Yeah, we are but that doesn’t mean we want to deny others. WE NEED IMMIGRATION REFORM & a fair system.

The Irish have it even better: a stacked lottery that is almost automatic path to citizenship.

The business community and plenty of Rs have been pushing for normalization for years. This is how to work with non-friends, not calling them a part of the Axis of Evil.

Does anyone else read the Washington post? One of the bloggers named Max Fisher has a post how Mandela Pal along with tyrants, but has the nerve to say he has a Madiba playlist on Itunes on Twitter. He has no right to use the Madiba title. It is a sign of respect, but this guy doesn’t respect Nelson Mandela.

Reads/looks very Ezra Klein lite. Who knew one could be even more feather light?

      • malletgirl02

When I read it I was thinking why can’t the media not be cynical or jaded for one freaking day to celebrate the greatest lives of the 20th century.

I noticed he doesn’t mention all the times where the west worked with tyrants.

        • conlakappa

That would probably be 100% of the time. We often were for them and supporting them before we were against them.

    • malletgirl02

To be honest what mad me angry wasn’t the article itself, but that he had the nerve to use Madiba in a snarky manner after what he said in the article.

    — -Obama Smacks Down The Republican Hysteria Over the Castro Handshake
    - – - -After Republicans like John McCain embarrassed themselves with outrage over the Castro handshake, the White House put out a statement that made them look like even bigger fools.
    Video of the Obama/Castro handshake:
    – – -SNIP – - -

    – —The White House had a simple explanation for the handshake that has whipped the right into a frenzy, “Nothing was planned in terms of the president’s role other than his remarks,” Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters traveling with Obama. “He really didn’t do more than exchange greetings with those leaders on his way to speak, it wasn’t a substantive discussion.”
    - –SNIP – - -
Sometimes a handshake is just a handshake, but the Republican barbarians don’t understand manners, so be prepared for lots of talk of this being proof of Obama’s commie ways.

    — -Obama praises Ryan-Murray budget pact – -

    – - –President Obama praised the budget deal announced Tuesday, calling it “a good first step” toward deficit recution.

Obama hailed the “balanced” deal for replacing $63 billion in automatic spending cuts known as the sequester, but also called on Congress to extend federal unemployment benefits, something excluded from the deal.

“This agreement replaces a portion of the across-the-board spending cuts known as “the sequester” that have harmed students, seniors, and middle-class families and served as a mindless drag on our economy over the last year,” he said in a statement.

“It’s balanced, and includes targeted fee increases and spending cuts designed in a way that doesn’t hurt our economy or break the ironclad promises we’ve made to our seniors,’ he added.
