Tuesday Evening Thread: The First Kiss

Mrs. Obama sits for an interview and discusses how she and the President met,  their 20-year marriage and tells the story of the first time the President  kissed her. “We were talking, eating and laughing and he leaned over and asked  me if he could he kiss me…and I said “Yes!”

What was Miranda saying re: the internet/social media as a gamechanger?

Today, Drudge dragged out his flashing sirens and announced that a sensational new race-tinged video of POTUS would be debuted on Fox”News” tonight. He made the mistake of posting a screencap. People instantly began to recognize the video and circulate it online. In sum, there’s no there there, and the darn smear job hasn’t even been broadcast before it was debunked in a matter of MINUTES.

    For example:
GAMECHANGER – Obama, in Drudge video, says impoverished communities need help regardless of whether or not they’re hit by hurricanes

    This is truly something else.

    • crazycanuck

I was wondering what that was about.

      • GN

It’s just beyond pathetic at this point. Drudge promised that Fox”News” would be airing an explosive new video of PBO making racially inflammatory remarks. Because Drudge posted a screenshot of the video, the internet went to work and literally within minutes, Buzzfeed had scooped Drudge and the video (a really good and completely unoffensive speech by then-Senator Obama in 2007 in front of a Hampton U. audience) has been widely disseminated and Drudge panned. Before Fox”News” even hits the air with their smear. Social media is SLAYING politicians like Romney.

    • Kennymack1971

The internal polling for the Romney camp must be horrible for Drudge to resort to this nonsense. The wingnuts are just pitiful now…ROTFLMAO at the EPIC FAIL.

    • This is as bad as when they tried to use the PBS documentary footage of PBO speaking out in support of Prof. Bell against him.

      • AxelFoley

Reminds me of the “Whitey” tapes.

They were desperate then, and they’re desperate now. This is the best they have. Hell, it’s the best they’ve had for years. Dems just didn’t take advantage of it. It took the arrival of Barack Obama for Dems to learn how to fight back.

Now, the thing is, can the Dems keep it up after PBO’s second term?

        • sagittarius

They’d better. The thing with winning is that it’s contagious. At first, you can’t believe it – is this really happening? Then, you realize it is happening and it’s all good. You want to keep that amazing feeling going for as long as you can.

        • GN

This is the whitey tape, indeed, and it’s beyond pathetic in its unoffensiveness (PBO’s speech however was BRILLIANT, I lub the POTUS). And because of social media, I get to judge this bullshit “story” for myself rather than being lied to through a pro-Romney filter. New paradigm.

    • Miranda

The first day of early voting in Lucas County is over, and the turnout was nearly twice that of the first day of early voting in 2008.

According to Meghan Gallagher, director of the Lucas County Board of Elections, 928 people voted today at the Early Vote Center, 1500 N. Superior St.

The compares with 500 on the first day of early voting four years ago, the first presidential election in which Ohio had in-person absentee voting for anyone who wanted to vote early.

Ben Affleck: ‘I think Republicans really had a chance’

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) — Ben Affleck is comparing Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney to past campaign losers Al Gore, Michael Dukakis and Bob Dole.

But the actor and director, who has been outspoken in support of Democratic causes in the past, also doesn’t offer full-throated support for President Barack Obama.

“I voted for Obama last time, although he got to be all things to all people then,” Affleck said in an interview to promote his new film, “Argo.” ”And now he’s got a record which makes it really different … I obviously have more complicated feelings.”

Affleck says Romney’s inability to connect with everyday Americans is reminiscent of past failed candidates.

    – — —First lady Michelle Obama visits Cincinnati on 1st day of early voting in Ohio – —

    – – – –CINCINNATI – First lady Michelle Obama told thousands of supporters in downtown Cincinnati that the November presidential election will be even closer than the one four years ago and that every single vote counts.

“You all seem pretty fired up and ready to go,” said Obama.

Speaking at the Duke Energy Convention Center on the first day of early voting in the key swing state on Tuesday, Obama reminded the crowd that her husband won Ohio four years ago with just 262,000 votes.

She says that breaks down to 24 votes per precinct and urged them to get to the polls.

“It’s going to take a lot longer than four years rebuild an economy from the brink of collapse,” said Obama.

The crowd of more than 6,800 roared with excitement throughout Obama’s speech, waving American flags and chanting, “Fired up! Ready to vote!” and “Four more years!”

“Are we going to turn around and go back to the same policies that got us into that hole in the first place, are we going to sit back and watch everything that we fought for and worked for to just slip away, or are we going to keep this country moving forward,” said Obama.

Outside the Duke Energy Center excitement was high.

No matter how they try to push the meme that PBO is racist it will never stick. Seriously the GOP has some nerve trying to push the racism off on this president. Especially considering quite a few of their elected officials have made racist remarks about PBO and black people in general. Hell their idol Reagan gave a freaking states rights speech in Philadelphia Mississippi. No dog whistles there; that evil asshole just came out and told black folks to kiss off yet till this day Reagan is worshiped by these idiots.

Naw in their eyes PBO is racist because he dared to become president. Everything they ever thought about black people has been turned upside down because of Barack Hussein Obama. We should all watch their meltdowns with glee.

    – — –President Obama has a small lead over Republican candidate Mitt Romney in North Carolina, one of the most hotly contested states in the presidential election, according to a new poll. Obama gets 49 percent of likely voters to Romney’s 47 percent in numbers from pollster SurveyUSA and commissioned by TV station WRAL. From their report:

As in 2008, Democrats hold a sizable edge among early voters, but the GOP is making a concerted effort not to fall too far behind before Election Day. Conservative groups have pushed for absentee votes and plan get-out-the-vote efforts once early voting starts in a couple of weeks.

According to the poll, Obama has a 20-point lead among people who plan to cast early ballots. They accounted for 43 percent of those surveyed. Romney holds a 53 to 41 percent lead among those planning to vote on Election Day – 48 percent of those surveyed – and a 58 to 39 percent lead among the small number of people who will cast absentee ballots.

Republicans in Close Senate Races Keep Romney at Distance
    By Kathleen Hunter

Massachusetts Republican Senator Scott Brown, pressed this week as to whether he is distancing himself from his party’s presidential nominee, avoided a direct answer, saying he and Mitt Romney are “two different people.”

“He’s out campaigning all over the country,” Brown said of Romney, a former Massachusetts governor, during an Oct. 1 debate against Democratic challenger Elizabeth Warren. “I’m running in Massachusetts.”

…In Connecticut, Linda McMahon stayed away from Sept. 30 fundraisers headlined by Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan. In Nevada, U.S. Representative Dean Heller skipped a chance to share the stage with Romney at a Sept. 21 rally at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. In a North Dakota television ad, Republican Senator Rick Berg says he will “serve as a check on Obama’s failed policies,” a phrase that skips past Election Day and Romney’s chances of winning.

Only one Republican in a competitive Senate race has aired a campaign ad in which he appears alongside Romney: Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock.

Spike Lee, Mayor Mitch Landrieu unveil provocative anti-murder campaign, $2 million fund

The stories are provocative by design: a mother who buried her young son, then nearly died of a broken heart; a man who woke up in the back of an ambulance, spared by the bullet that barely missed his spinal cord. Both people both joined Mayor Mitch Landrieu and director Spike Lee at the Joy Theater Tuesday night to unveil an advertising campaign, aimed at abating the city’s intractable murder rate. Behind them, on a movie screen, was a heart set against a backdrop of newspaper obituaries.

“Bright young lives are being snuffed out on New Orleans’ streets daily,” said Lee, the award-winning director of “When the Levees Broke.” “Our young black men are killing each other like it’s a self-imposed genocide. It is our job, our responsibility to make them understand the value of their lives and help them to achieve their greatest potential.”

The campaign, called “Flip the Script,” focuses on “changing the attitudes of and about young black men,” the mayor said. It is part of Landrieu’s “Nola For Life” initiative to halt the city’s murder rate, a rate 10 times the national average with a killing every two days on average.

    Rant Of The Day

“The wealthy buyers are afraid that they can’t win this election with big bucks alone. They are no longer sure that they can lead the public by the nose, under Karl Rove’s expertise and with the hundreds of millions available from the Koch brothers, Sheldon Adelson and the media empire of Rupert Murdoch.

None of their power can stop the clip of Romney talking about the 47% of Americans he supposedly knows all about and doesn’t care much for. Big Mitt cut his own throat by talking the way he really thinks. The damning comments were made at a private show for fat cats who were tired of being soaked, or imagining they were. It’s a safe bet that Romney was told he had to step up and defend them. Americans could see the bare flesh of Romney’s crooked hand,” – Stanley Crouch,

    Obama’s Fair-Weather Foes

Chrystia Freeland has a new article on the anti-Obama super rich. In response, Felix Salmon mulls the finance industry’s relationship with the president:

During the 2008 election, Obama received significantly more Wall Street money than McCain, for one very good reason: Wall Street trusted him and his egghead technocrat advisers to do whatever was necessary to prevent their world from imploding. And that’s exactly what they did. Geithner, Bernanke, Summers, and the rest of the Obama economic team threw everything they could at the markets: they were the liquidity provider of last resort, they took that role seriously, and they did exactly what was necessary to save the US — and, for that matter, the global — financial system. McCain, by contrast, never came across as being particularly competent on that front, treating the financial crisis more as an excuse for political stunts than as a serious existential threat.

After 2009, however, Wall Street felt that the crisis was over.

Yes, unemployment was still unacceptably high, growth was unacceptably low, and the real economy was still struggling. But never mind that: Wall Street profits were enormous, corporate profits were hitting record highs, and bonus season was just around the corner. America’s financiers no longer needed Washington to save them from ruin; now all they wanted was for Washington to get out of the way, and to let them prosecute their profit-making strategies as aggressively as they wanted. And they were in no mood for gentle reminders from Washington that if it wasn’t for the public sector they’d all have been wiped out.

    Romney’s Ohio Problem

Early voting starts today in Ohio. Molly Ball collects evidence that Romney may be doomed in the state, even in the parts of Ohio where he should be crushing Obama:

“I think Obama’s more for the regular working class people, and Romney’s for the big business and the well-to-do,” said Eric Burkhead, the road and cemetery superintendent for Kirkwood Township, working on a truck in the gravel driveway of the local garage. The 66-year-old didn’t like what he saw happening with coal and wasn’t wild about Obamacare, but he planned to vote for Obama.

I heard it over and over again from Ohioans — the idea that Romney stands for the wealthy and not for them. Obama’s depiction of his rival as an out-of-touch rich guy, which has gotten no little assistance from Romney himself, has made a deep and effective impression with these self-consciously working-class voters.

    — –Romney will bring talking points to the debate while Obama will tell the truth — —

    – – – –If I may be allowed my upcoming presidential debate, 2 cents worth (adjusted for roughly 1.70% inflation), here goes.

When Barack Obama and Mitt Romney lock horns this Wednesday, they’ll just be getting warmed up when they eclipse my old debate time-frame. From 9-10:30 PM (ET), they’ll be sitting on little high-chairs, sans pacifiers, trying to one-up each other. The debate will be on domestic issues and divided into a half-dozen, 15-minute segments. The first 3 will be devoted to the economy, followed by the equivalent of 2 more segments on health care and a final 15 minutes of arguing (‘er debating) about government and how things should be run.

The moderator’s moderator will be at the helm. Taking the reins as inquisitor will be veteran (and I do mean veteran) newsman, Jim Lehrer. The 78-year-old Lehrer, who retired as anchor or co-anchor of the PBS NewsHour last year after 36 years, has trod the print and electronic news path for some 53 years. In his spare time Lehrer has written a dozen novels under his name and moderated almost as many presidential debates (11). He has a reputation for being consummately fair and objective.

    – – – – -SNIP – – –

Mitt’s handlers will give him talking points. No matter what Lehrer’s questions might be, the responses will be based on these repetitive talking points. On occasion, the question won’t be answered at all.

Bottom line…I find Mitt mildly creepy. He has an odd, almost metallic stare. Obama looks at you like the guy on the next stool. In any event, I’ll be stunned if this debate moves the polls one way or the other. It should be entertaining, however.

    – – — –Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan “share a similarly dim view of a very large portion of Americans, according to previously unreported remarks by Ryan. Both believe that many of their fellow citizens are dependent on government and have no motivation to improve their lives — but they disagree over the precise number,” the Huffington Post reports.

“Romney’s estimate, famously, is 47 percent. For Ryan, it’s 30 percent.”

Said Ryan, in remarks given in November 2011: “Seventy percent of Americans want the American dream. They believe in the American idea. Only 30 percent want their welfare state. Before too long, we could become a society where the net majority of Americans are takers, not makers.”

    – – – –Mitt Romney has always insisted that his extensive use of offshore tax havens hasn’t allowed him to pay “one dollar” less in U.S. taxes than he would have had he kept his money in America. But today The New York Times revealed that Romney did in fact pay less in taxes as a result of complex offshore tactics that helped him attract lucrative foreign investments. Take a look at how Mitt Romney avoided paying his fair share, then share it with your friends.>/i>

    miranda- – A JUDICIAL -COMMEMORATION – – —:>) – —

    – – – 59 Years Ago Today, The 20th Century’s Greatest American Jurist Became Chief Justice — – —

    – — – —Fifty-nine years ago, California Governor Earl Warren left behind his highest elected office to join what had at times been the most malign institution in American history. The first Supreme Court decision to strike down a federal law was Marbury v. Madison, an arcane opinion that is now the first decision every law student reads in their introduction to constitutional law. The second was Dred Scott v. Sanford, the paean to slavery that declared black people “beings of an inferior order, and altogether unfit to associate with the white race either in social or political relations, and so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect.”

The nation would eventually ratify three entire constitutional amendments to eradicate the taint of Dred Scott, and the Supreme Court spent the next thirty years denuding these amendments of any real meaning — an effort that culminated in the Court’s infamous endorsement of racial segregation in Plessy v. Ferguson. Having thus bled the Constitution dry of racial justice, the same Supreme Court then took to infusing its veins with the dark ichor of laissez faire social Darwinism. With the Court’s 1905 decision in Lochner v. New York, the Fourteenth Amendment enacted in order to eradicate American apartheid instead became a tool empowering the wealthy to better exploit their workers.
    – – – -SNIP – – —
Nevertheless, the fact remains that Warren’s Court made the words “equal protection of the laws” truly mean something for the first time in American history. Warren’s Court breathed life into the Bill of Rights; it ushered in the guarantee of one person, one vote; and it chiseled cracks into the face of American apartheid that would eventually cause it to crumble into dust. President Dwight Eisenhower, who wanted a more conservative Court, would later say that appointing Earl Warren was “the biggest damned-fool mistake I ever made.”

The whole nation should be deeply grateful that he made it.

I just read the transcript of PBO’s speech at Hampton University that Fox and em are disparaging and the speech made me teary. PBO was straight preaching! All he said was that if we claim to represent Christ, we have to tackle poverty seriously and purposefully. That speech had me church jogging. I wish EVERY swing voter in every state watch that full speech or read the full transcript especially when he speaks about health care.

Here’s the transcript. h/t Claire? on TOD:

Wow at these entitled, greedy, narcissistic wall street motherfuckers! They see that their money won’t buy them command and authority over President Obama and they are losing their fucking minds. And while we are it, fuck the slimy weasel Al Gore and that slimy kiss-ass dipshit Anthonio Villaraigosa.

One night last May, some twenty financiers and politicians met for dinner in the Tuscany private dining room at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. The eight-course meal included blinis with caviar; a fennel, grapefruit, and pomegranate salad; cocoa-encrusted beef tenderloin; and blue-cheese panna cotta. The richest man in the room was Leon Cooperman, a Bronx-born, sixty-nine-year-old billionaire. Cooperman is the founder of a hedge fund called Omega Advisors, but he has gained notice beyond Wall Street over the past year for his outspoken criticism of President Obama. Cooperman formalized his critique in a letter to the President late last year which was widely circulated in the business community; in an interview and in a speech, he has gone so far as to draw a parallel between Obama’s election and the rise of the Third Reich.

The most electric moment of the evening, though, was an exchange between Cooperman and Gore.

—-Cooperman searches for companies that are cheap and which he hopes to sell when they become dear. (In 1998, Cooperman made a foray into emerging markets, investing more than a hundred million dollars as part of a bid to take over Azerbaijan’s state oil company, but it went badly wrong. His firm lost most of its money and paid five hundred thousand dollars to settle a U.S.-government bribery investigation.) Cooperman had come to the dinner to give Gore a copy of the letter he’d written to President Obama. “I’d like you to read this,” he told the former Vice-President. “You owe me a small favor. I voted for you,” he said, referring to Gore’s Presidential run, in 2000.

In the letter, Cooperman argued that Obama has needlessly antagonized the rich by making comments that are hostile to economic success. The prose, rife with compound metaphors and righteous indignation, is a good reflection of Cooperman’s table talk. “The divisive, polarizing tone of your rhetoric is cleaving a widening gulf, at this point as much visceral as philosophical, between the downtrodden and those best positioned to help them,” Cooperman wrote. “It is a gulf that is at once counterproductive and freighted with dangerous historical precedents.”

At the dinner, Al Gore was diplomatic when presented with the letter, and asked Cooperman if he would accept higher taxes. Cooperman said that he would—if he was treated with respect, and the government didn’t squander his money. Cooperman asked Gore what he thought the top marginal tax rate should be. Gore’s reply was noncommittal, but he pleased the group by suggesting that no matter who wins in November the victor should surround himself with advisers with experience in the private sector.

Kramer, the hedge-fund manager and Obama fund-raiser, was quiet, but others in the room were enthusiastic. Villaraigosa gave Cooperman his direct phone number.

Scaramucci, the organizer of the dinner, told me the next day that the guests had witnessed the “activation” of a “sleeper cell” of hedge-fund managers against Obama. “That’s what you see happening in the hedge-fund community, because they now have the power, because of Citizens United, to aggregate capital into political-action committees and to influence the debate,” he said.

Aha, forgot to mention that Cory Booker also makes a cameo in this tale too. We see and know all these people so well now, thanks to President Obama!

—Last July, before he had written the letter, Cooperman was invited to the White House for a reception to honor wealthy philanthropists who had signed Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett’s Giving Pledge, promising to donate at least fifty per cent of their net worth to charity. At the event, Cooperman handed the President two copies of “Inspired: My Life (So Far) in Poems,” a self-published book written by Courtney Cooperman, his fourteen-year-old granddaughter. Cooperman was surprised that the President didn’t send him a thank-you note or that Malia and Sasha Obama, for whom the books were intended as a gift and to whom Courtney wrote a separate letter, didn’t write to Courtney. (After Cooperman grumbled to a few friends, including Cory Booker, the mayor of Newark, Michelle Obama did write. Booker, who was also a recipient of Courtney’s book, promptly wrote her “a very nice note,” Cooperman said.)
