Tuesday Evening Thread: The Informercial For Romney Economics

  • lamh35

Umm wow. I guess this is this year’s “community organizer” bit. Are people really falling for this? We are talking about the 44th President of the United States Barack Obama not first time Senator Obama. Doesn’t the job of POTUS involve “running things”

But here I go talking in this reality rather than fantasy land.

    Bonus Quote of the Day

“President Obama’s never run a company. He hasn’t even run a garage sale or seen the inside of a lemonade stand.”– RNC Chairman Reince Priebus, quoted by the Associated Press.

Ugh thi Reince dude is an douche.

    • nellcote

He’s run a succesful presidential campaign which is more than Rmoney can say.

    • TyrenM

      FP…can’t help itself.

  • Excerpts from Miss Ann’s speech:

…Tonight I want to talk to you from my heart about our hearts.

I want to talk not about what divides us, but what holds us together as an American family. I want to talk to you tonight about that one great thing that unites us, that one thing that brings us our greatest joy when times are good, and the deepest solace in our dark hours.

Tonight I want to talk to you about love.

Mitt’s dad never graduated from college. Instead, he became a carpenter.

He worked hard, and he became the head of a car company, and then the governor of Michigan.

When Mitt and I met and fell in love, we were determined not to let anything stand in the way of our life together.
I read somewhere that Mitt and I have a “storybook marriage.” Well, in the storybooks I read, there were never long, long, rainy winter afternoons in a house with five boys screaming at once. And those storybooks never seemed to have chapters called MS or Breast Cancer.

A storybook marriage? No, not at all. What Mitt Romney and I have is a real marriage.

    • lamh35

      I’m already going bluh!

    • goldenstar

      EWWWwwwwww. Icky. Yuck.

    • lamh35

According to Greg Sargent on twitter, Ann’s speech is “more emotional” than reported.

So the narrative has been set. Ann’s speech is a success before it has even been given.

      • I bet she goes into the ugly cry.

Watch. The media will make it seem like Miss Ann’s speech was the second coming of “I Have A Dream”.

      • Camille

Yeah the sequel to the little skit of her passing around cookies to the reporters on the campaign plane this morning.

        • Aquagranny911

Did she really? Bet they came from 7-11.

          • Camille

You missed it AG? They were playing it on a loop all morning.

She said she wasn’t sure what she would be wearing to make her teary, begging, speech tonight trying to whip up “anticipation” a la Mrs Obama. Even though nobody in that press area asked or seemed to care.

    • Miranda

Oh Lord…who wrote this speech – the writers of Mad Men?

    • cosine

      Glurge . . . .

    • GOVCHRIS1988

Wow, Laura Bush’s speech was better than this. HELL, even Liddy Dole’s stroll down the stairwell speech was better than this. They have NOTHING.

    • Camille

Oh my God, when will this woman’s transparent and unconvincing phoniness cease?

What next? A story about how she suffered so as a poor widow since Mitt Romney died – even though Mitt Romney is sitting right next to her. Her lies and obviously made up stories are really becoming embarrassing.

Her obsession with having what Michelle Obama has is literally driving Ann Romney insane and making Ann Romney not only look and act so embarassingly craven and desperate, but actually exposes her for the base, obsessive, jealous, dishonest, spoilt, greedy, tone deaf, deceitful, craven, hollow woman she really is.

It is really hard to come across as genuine or authentic and to be truly one’s authentic self when you are obviously acting out a script rustled up by staff. A script you can’t relate to especially when it requires you to be somebody you aren’t. It’s even harder when it runs contrary to your life and how you’ve actually lived it.

Desperation + envy + greed = a very miserable and ugly Ann Romney.

    • annvic

Ann Romney is bitter and entitled down to the dregs of her soul and I doubt that she will be able to get through this “America’s Sweetheart” speech without screwing it up. Hell, even Sarah Palin didn’t have to play nice; she got to be the pit bull nipping at Obama’s heels. But Ann “Call me Kanye for the way I snatch the mike from my husband at rallies” Romney is going to stay sweet, submissive, and on script? Lol, okay.

  • I’m so loving that Tweety won’t let up on Romney using racism to gain white voters.

  • Miranda

Yeah! Sloane Stephens won her match!

  • TyrenM

The Lush speaking of bars. Funny. Not funny, whoever was butchering “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.” I know Stevie didn’t OK that bs.

    • GOVCHRIS1988

Not only are they copying the 2008 Dem Convention, they are doing it badly.

    • nellcote

      “Signed, Sealed, Delivered.”
That pissed me off more than anything else I’ve heard all day.

  • GOVCHRIS1988

Wow, John Boehner is really on that PATrick RONald tonight!!!!

    • No you didn’t!

      • GOVCHRIS1988

Yes, I did buy Dwele’s new album today.

I think they’re both right. You usually see the same 5 blah folks at the RNC. It’s hilarious when the cameraman panics looking for the one he’s picked out and can’t find him.

McCarthy: Romney Win Would Be Mandate to Revamp Medicare
    By Corey Boles

TAMPA, Fla.–A victory by Mitt Romney in November would provide a mandate to enact a Medicare overhaul to prevent the health care program from going bankrupt in a little more than a decade, House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R., Calif.) said.

The No. 3 House Republican told a group of reporters Tuesday that a Romney administration would be able to pursue the sort of radical shakeup outlined by Mr. Romney’s running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.).

“It goes to what the election is all about,” said Mr. McCarthy, who is in Tampa for the Republican National Convention. “If there’s a mandate going through this election, it’s to save Medicare.”

    • Miranda

The AARP better come out swinging hard for PBO at the DNC…I mean they betta bring it like Miss Sophia to Squeak.

  • TyrenM

RNC Convention – brought to you by BP.

    • Camille

Anyone seen or heard from the ambitious one – Eric Cantor.

Eerily silent especially for a man who really wanted to be picked for the V.P/ running mate slot.

So desperate he prematurely dispatched his chief of staff to go raise campaign funds to prove he could be an asset.

And Eric Cantor is a slimy, vindictive bastard who can’t be happy seeing the silly, juvenile Paul Ryan being toasted in his make believe role as grown up.

This won’t end well at all I suspect.

      • TyrenM

He at the Sheldon Party Booth. You know, with the strippers.

      • conlakappa

He and Ryan are cut from the same cloth: walking hairdo, slightly dim sciions of wealthy families in construction. He probably cried his big head to sleep saying repeatedly, “why not me?” There was no way Mittens was going to pick someone Jewish. Mormon + Jewish = fundevangelicals in a complete lather. Even the Catholic choice was risky where that crowd is concerned.

  • Camille

    Explains a lot:

“–> adviser.[26][6] Ryan also attended the Washington Semester

      Yep, sure does.

  • annvic

What the fuck is “We Built It” supposed to mean? ‘Cause what the slaves didn’t build in America, the Irish, Chinese, and Latinos did. Mitt Romney hasn’t built anything in his lifetime besides a shitty reputation. Hell, I’d lay cash money down on the fact that that mofo ain’t washed a coffee mug in 15 years.

I think there was a scene when she went skeet shooting or something in The Queen when she wore a hoodie.

The Queen don’t play! HOODS UP!

      • Aquagranny911

If I remember right, that was the scene where she is out walking with her dogs & someone came to tell her Diana was dead. She turned away for a moment & pulled the hood of her jacket around her head.

The Queen may do all that foufou stuff when she has to but she is a real person underneath. That’s why she likes Michelle.

The White House said Obama informed Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal of the emergency declaration in a phone call. The declaration makes federal support available to save lives, protect public health and safety and preserve property in coastal areas.

Jindal, a Republican, shot back late Monday in a letter to the Obama administration that the declaration fell short of the help he was requesting.

“We appreciate your response to our request and your approval,” Jindal wrote. “However, the state’s original request for federal assistance …. included a request for reimbursement for all emergency protective measures. The federal declaration of emergency only provides for direct federal assistance.”

    • conlakappa

What a small, sad man. Hope the soul tradeoff thing was worth it for him. What is Mittens promising him? A Cabinet position? Not bloodly likely. He has already said his Cabinet would all come from the corporate world.

‘We’re Not Going to Let Our Campaign Be Dictated by Fact-Checkers’

As Ben Smith of BuzzFeed has pointed out, the Romney campaign is simply swatting aside the media’s objections to its welfare ad: “We’re not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers,” said Neil Newhouse, a Romney pollster.

RNC Attendee Allegedly Threw Nuts At Black CNN Camerawoman, Said ‘This Is How We Feed Animals’

[….] The CNN official declined to confirm specific details of the incident to TPM but generally confirmed an account posted on Twitter by former MSNBC and Current anchor David Shuster: “GOP attendee ejected for throwing nuts at African American CNN camera woman + saying ‘This is how we feed animals.’”

It is not clear whether the alleged culprit was a delegate or attending the convention in some other capacity. It could not be immediately determined when the incident happened or where within the convention complex.

TPM’s calls to RNC and convention officials were not immediately returned.

Barack Obama Did Sort of Run a Lemonade Stand

As Politifact detailed in 2009, in response to a similar allegation from MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough, Obama held a number of retail and food service jobs as a teenager in Hawaii—including scooping ice cream at Baskin-Robbins, which technically doesn’t serve lemonade but it does have a pink rasberry lemonade sorbet:

1975 or 1976 — ice cream scooper, Baskin-Robbins — Honolulu — Obama claims to have lost his taste for ice cream during this, his first job, the duration of which is not publicly known.

Date unknown — deli counter clerk, business name unknown — Honolulu — Obama had a summer job at a deli counter in Hawaii, making sandwiches, his spokesman said during the presidential campaign.

1980 — gift shop sales clerk, business name unknown — Honolulu — Obama worked at a gift shop in Hawaii selling island souvenirs the summer after his freshman year at Occidental College in California.

As Politifact noted, Obama held private-sector jobs as an adult as well, including posts at a Chicago law firm and a New York City company that helped American companies do business abroad—exactly the kind of experience Romney is accusing Obama of lacking. [….]

    – – –Court: GOP’s Texas Redistricting Plan Intentionally Discriminated Against Hispanics – –

    – —Updated: 4:25PM

A redistricting plan signed by Texas Gov. Rick Perry (R) intentionally discriminated against Hispanic voters, a three-judge panel unanimously ruled Tuesday. The judges found that seats belonging to white incumbent members of Congress were protected under the plan while districts belonging to incumbent minorities were targeted for changes.

The court was “persuaded by the totality of the evidence that the plan was enacted with discriminatory intent,” according to the ruling. There was “sufficient evidence to conclude that the Congressional Plan was motivated, at least in part, by discriminatory intent,” the court found.

The three judges said they were overwhelmed with the amount of evidence showing the congressional redistricting plan was intentionally discriminatory, writing in a footnote that parties “have provided more evidence of discriminatory intent than we have space, or need, to address here.”

    – – –Poll: Romney Faces Lowest Favorability Rating For Major Party Nominee Since Reagan Years

    – —The Republican nomination officially his and the party’s base seemingly coalescing behind him, Mitt Romney remains hamstrung by a historically low favorability rating, the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll released Tuesday night shows.

According to the poll, only 40 percent of registered voters nationwide have a favorable view of Romney — the lowest level of popularity for a major party’s presidential nominee since the presidency of Ronald Reagan. Fifty-one percent view Romney unfavorably, a problem the former Massachusetts governor has been unable to shake throughout the campaign. It also marks only the second time last fall in ABC/WaPo’s polling that a candidate has been viewed unfavorably by a majority of respondents.

Compounding matters for Romney: his incumbent opponent remains widely liked by the American public. The poll shows that 50 percent of voters have a favorable view of President Barack Obama, compared with 47 percent who hold an unfavorable view.

    – – –THIS – ->Ann Romney emphasized that Mitt Romney was not “handed success” despite being born into a well-off family in her speech Tuesday night at the Republican National Convention.

“As his partner on this amazing journey, I can tell you Mitt Romney was not handed success,” Romney said. “He built it.”

She desribed how he built up a sucessful career: “He stayed in Massachusetts after graduate school and got a job. I saw the long hours that started with that first job. I was there when he and a small group of friends talked about starting a new company. I was there when they struggled and wondered if the whole idea just wasn’t going to work. [ I DON’T AGREE!] [There is not a “profile” of a school shooter-instead the students who carried out the attacks differed from one another in numerous ways.] – – -[There R MANY COMMONALITIES.] – –
School shootings are rarely impulsive acts.
They are typically thought out and planned in advance.
Prior to most school shootings other students knew the shooting was going to occur but failed to notify an adult.
Very few of the attackers ever directed threats to their targets before the attack.
The most common goal was retribution. The justifications and excuses offered indicated this stemmed not from an absence of values but from a well-developed value system in which violence was acceptable.
In many cases, other students were involved in the attack in some capacity.
Many offenders experienced a significant personal loss in the months leading up to the attack, such as a death, breakup, or divorce in the family.
Many offenders engaged in repetitive viewing of violent media and were often fascinated with previous school shootings. Repeated viewing of movies depicting school shootings, such as “Zero Day” and “Elephant,” may indicate a fascination with campus attacks.
