Obama recommits to closing Guantanamo Bay

WASHINGTON-The White House says President Barack Obama has met with two special envoys for closing the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prison and recommitted to closing it.

Obama met Monday with State Department envoy Clifford Sloan and Pentagon envoy Paul Lewis. It’s the first publicly announced meeting between Obama and the envoys.

Obama vowed to close the prison but has been thwarted by Congress. He announced in May he would appoint envoys and ordered the Pentagon to designate a site in the U.S. where detainee trials could be held.

“The Guantanamo facility continues to drain our resources and harm our standing in the world,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement.

I am so mad at the democrats, from President Obama down to the

      • Alma98

How is it PBO’s fault that she ran a shitty campaign? Or that some local dems are on Christie’s side.

I was dismayed that Buono never took off but I noticed a lot of Johnnys- and Janes-come-lately went into this really hyper angry mode just over the past few days of this contest which is stupid because at that point, it was obvious that she was losing and there wasn’t much anyone could do about it. If the establishment bailed on Buono then the grassroots certainly did too—she struggled to get even modest attention from “the base” gatekeepers.

Report: California Insurer To Delay Health Insurance Cancellations Until End Of March

California Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones announced
Tuesday that Blue Cross Blue Shield California will delay its
individual policy cancellations until March 31, 2014, granting policy
holders a 90-day extension.[....] Since Blue Shield left the market, it needed to give consumers 180 days notice.

Jones clarified in his statement that if those police holders want to take advantage of government subsidies, in particular through the Affordable Care Act, they should choose a new plan by Dec. 15.[...]

Blue Shield spokesman Steve Shivinsky told the San Francisco Business Times that California had threatened to sue the company if it did not delay cancellations after a disagreement over the insurer’s original 90 day notice to customers.[....]

After Boy is Bullied for Pink Shoes Entire School Goes Pink

In honor of his mother, a breast cancer survivor, and for Breast
Cancer Awareness month, Ryan Marotta bought pink sneakers to wear to school. The NFL does it, so it must be cool. But, some of his middle school classmates harassed him because he was a boy wearing pink.

When his friends found out why he was wearing the shoes, everyone started wearing pink: Pink socks, pink shoes, pink hats, pink ribbons.
“My mom cried tears of joy last night when she found out,” he said.(WATCH the video below)

Blistering exposé prompts Hopkins to suspend black-lung screenings

The coal industry has a decades-old friendship with Johns Hopkins
University, but now that cozy relationship is being torn apart by the
scrutiny of investigative journalists. When employees filed for black-lung-related benefits, coal companies paid the Baltimore-based university handsome sums to screen the claimants for the disease.

After reviewing chest X-rays, the university’s scientists almost always concluded that the scans did not show black lung — a conclusion which often overwhelmed any other medical opinion in the case.[...] The racket was exposed by the ABC, working in partnership with the Center for Public Integrity:[....]

Attorney general hasn’t ruled out federal charges against George Zimmerman

[....] “I’m not sure exactly how much longer that will take, but we will get to a point where we are able to make a determination,” said U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder.[....] “The case of George Zimmerman and what happens there, I think a substantial part was resolved in the case that was tried,” Holder said Monday.

The attorney general had said in April that the agency would “take
appropriate action” if its investigation finds any evidence of a federal civil rights crime against Martin. But Holder has cautioned that the Justice Department faces a “very high barrier” in pursuing federal criminal charges in such cases.

Thanks, Obama! 34 Million Americans Eligible for Free or Subsidized Insurance Under Obamacare

Here’s a story you won’t see in among the witch hunt of a media frenzy about Obamacare: according to a Kaiser Family Foundation analysis, 17 million Americans will be eligible to receive subsidies in the Affordable Care Act marketplaces (exchanges). This is in addition to those who will become newly eligible for Medicaid
in states that accept the massive, fully-federally funded expansion of the program under the Affordable Care.

If all states accepted the Medicaid expansion, that would mean yet another 17 million Americans with free health coverage. If all states expanded Medicaid (at no cost to them – and likely less than no cost, since their cost of uncompensated care would be reduced dramatically), 34 million Americans in total would stand to gain either free or subsidized health insurance coverage. Thanks, Obama.[....]

    - – -45 Years Ago Today: Shirley Chisholm Becomes the First Black Congresswoman – –Woo! Hoo! :>)

    — – – -On November 5th 1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first black woman elected to Congress. She represented New York’s 12th District and went on to maintain that seat for seven terms until 1983. Born in New York the daughter of West Indian parents, Chisholm was known for using her political career to fight for social justice and education. In 1969, Chisholm became one of the founding members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
She then went on to become the first African American to make a bid to become President of the United States — running for a Democratic nomination in 1972.

Chisholm died in 2005, however in 2004 she said about her legacy, ”I want history to remember me not just as the first black woman to be elected to Congress, not as the first black woman to have made a bid for the presidency of the United States, but as a black woman who lived in the 20th century and dared to be herself.”

prediction: majority of white women vote for cuccinelli, but white feminists will take credit for mcauliffe win.

        White women always vote republican.

        • conlakappa

I thought that wasn’t the case with the 20-50 set and maybe even the truly senior.

  • itgurl_29

According to Twitter, CNN is saying that President Obama was a “liability” to Terry McAuliffe, even though Obama’s the one who turned VA purple, he copied PBO’s campaign down the the music set list as rallies, and that all of his votes have come from the Obama coalition, specifically getting support from over 90 percent of black voters. Secondly, Terry will obviously win tonight so why even talk about the President being a “liability”? They are so consumed with hatred and a visceral need to bring this president down, that they will make fools of themselves to do it.

    • Alma98

They’re full of shit! They better get ready to eat some crow.

    • gn

      @Smartypants60
Reporter ignores Cooch winning white women RT @JuddLegum: White men ♥ Ken Cuccinelli. Everyone else… not so much:

      https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BYWPdc7CIAAveeO.jpg:large
Graphic=PBO’s coalition brought this home for McAuliffe; the media will downplay that so that the impression is given that black voters are owed nothing.

      • itgurl_29

White women are always absolved of their racism and I’m sick of it. I just called him out. The graph was right there and yet he still failed to point out that the majority of BOTH white men and women voted for Cuccinelli.

        • gn

And notice how it’s just taken for granted that Dems will get 90%, 95% black support—those are spectacular numbers which SHOULD confer a debt to this specific constituency. The media minimizing it is the first step to that debt not being paid adequately. Just watch as the night goes on and the days follow (unless people speak up).

          • Lisa M

John Kerry learned too late about that. He only got 88% of the black vote and how did that work out for him.

          • TyrenM

THIS needs to be sent out before next years (& ’16) elections.

        • gn

          Here we go:

          @DavidCornDC
Exit polls show VA race is not about Obama but about the shutdown, women, abortion, and the changing electorate. Bad news for GOP.

VA is 20% black. 90, 95% black support put McAuliffe over the top; had PBO come against him McAuliffe couldn’t have swung that.

    • jziglar

Well if President Obama was a liability then we would see some effect right ? These people are so stupid !

President Obama was the first democrat since LBJ to carry Virginia which is turning blue. The Obama coalition (or as Ron Brownstein calls it: The coalition of the ascendent) is the future of this country. This coalition will be the majority in the not so distant future.

    • qosine

CNN’s ratings plummet, while the Obama Coalition’s rise.
No way McAuliffe could win without PBO’s support.
And with AG Holder’s Train of Justice, it’s a new day.

    - – –THEATER REVIEW: Fantasia Barrino Celebrates Harlem’s Jazz Age In “After Midnight”- -

—- – –There are few things that bring smiles to even the most jaded faces — balloons, blaring trumpets and tap dancers. A new Broadway revue has two— no, make that all three — so no wonder it leaves you feeling lighter than air. After Midnight, a candy sampler of some two dozen musical numbers that showcase dance, jazz or singing, opened Sunday at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre led by musical genius Wynton Marsalis, an endearing Dule Hill as its host and a thrilling guest singer in Fantasia Barrino.

The show, which first surfaced in 2011 off-Broadway, tries to re-create the energy and fun of Harlem’s famous Cotton Club nightclub in the 1920s and 30s, when Duke Ellington and his band made everything cool. It does so with panache but avoids sounding old-fashioned: There’s even room for some breakdancing and popping. As
17 musicians from Jazz at Lincoln Center play, the night includes
Fantasia belting out a super “I Can’t Give You Anything But Love,” a
subdued “Stormy Weather” and an infectious “Zaz Zuh Zaz.” Adriane Lenox plays a hysterical boozy hellcat in two numbers, “Women Be Wise” and “GoBack Where You Stayed Last Night.”

Call me a conspiracy theorist….but this piling on Obamacare was done to affect today’s election. The shutdown really put the GOP in a bad light in this heavily federal government dependent state. And of course, the media dropped the subject on the costly shutdown real quick to malign Obamacare. uh huh

      • conlakappa

I don’t think you need to don any tin foil: you’re right. Any time the freakin’ local affiliate shows just a clip of the winner without his speech, going instead for the loser saying his votes are a referendum on the suck that is Obamacare, there is a problem and a disconnect. Why would I need to hear Kooky say jack about jack? He lost. Now step aside, bum, the whole Tea Party in leadership in Virginia is over.

  • malletgirl02

While I’m on the topic of the Civil War. It irks me how some white southerns are still angry about the outcome of the Civil War. The thing is, the Confederacy started the war by firing on Fort Sumner.

    • MonieTalks

What irks me more is that they won’t admit that they went to war fighting over their desire to continue to be welfare recipients. The despicable use of slavery was the ultimate “sit their lazy ass at home and collect off the labor of others” scheme ever ran in this country. The Confederate flag is the ultimate symbol of that.

Chuck Todd predicted that the President would win the popular vote by 1 point and he was wrong. These pundits have no clue what they’re talking about.

    • qosine

NYT sure frames these 3 races differently.

Terry McAuliffe, Democrat, Wins Virginia Governor Race
Terry McAuliffe, a prolific Democratic fund-raiser who has never held elective office, was elected governor of Virginia on Tuesday, defeating Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, the Republican attorney general, whose uncompromising conservatism was the focus of the race.

Mr. McAuliffe, 56, benefited from a larger war chest and his opponent’s decision to appeal almost entirely to his party’s conservative base. He was able to frame the vote as a referendum on whether Mr. Cuccinelli’s social views were out of step in a state that is increasingly suburban and diverse.

Bill De Blasio Elected Mayor of New York
Bill de Blasio, who transformed himself from a little-known occupant of an obscure office into the fiery voice of New York’s disillusionment with a new gilded age, was elected the city’s 109th mayor on Tuesday. He defeated Joseph J. Lhota, the former chairman of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, by a wide margin, exit polls show.

Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey Wins Re-election, Exit Polls Show
Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey won re-election on Tuesday, defeating his Democratic rival, State Senator Barbara Buono, by a crushing margin. The victory vaulted him to the front ranks of Republican presidential contenders. In a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans by 700,000, Mr. Christie won decisively, making impressive inroads among younger voters, blacks, Hispanics and women – all groups that Republicans nationally have struggled to attract.

“which I only learned last week”—-I happen to follow some people who have been discussing Buono’s contest for some time now and it was clear that she never had a chance. I don’t know what happened but in the last few days there was a drama whipped up about her amongst people who hadn’t been paying any attention or boosting her at all for this entire time, now demanding to know why she was losing at the eleventh hour. They say about 54% of white women voted for Cuccinelli.

    You will find:

Married & Conservative white women voted for Cuccinelli.

    The female McAuliffe voters are:

    Single white women
    Younger white women
    All non-white women

Single, younger & non-white women would be the ones adversely affected by Cuccinelli & Co. with the banning of birth control, restrictions on abortion, transvaginal probes & lack of health care.

CORALVILLE, Iowa — No election may be too small for the independent political groups vying for influence in the United States.
That’s the impression some people in Coralville, Iowa, have gotten since Americans for Prosperity jumped into their municipal election and turned it into a referendum on government spending. Residents in the community of 19,000 say they’ve never seen such an outside effort in a local vote. AFP has targeted residents with home visits, phone calls and mailings calling the city’s $280 million debt a crisis. One flier hitting mailboxes this week says Coralville is on its way to becoming bankrupt like Detroit.

Despite their best efforts and Americans for Prosperity proved once again they can not be trusted to handle their donors money. All of the candidates backed by AFP have been soundly defeated. The good guys won every precinct at both the mayoral and city council level. Congrats to my fellow wise residents.

    — —Family of slain Detroit woman seeks answers about incident

——The family of a Detroit woman shot to death after she is believed to have sought help at a Dearborn Heights home is calling for answers in the incident.

The family of Renisha McBride, 19, said she went for help after a car
accident around 2:30 a.m. Saturday. She died of a gunshot wound to the head after knocking on the door of a home on the 16000 block of Outer Drive near Warren in Dearborn Heights, near where the accident occurred. Her cellphone battery had died, her family said.

Few other details about the incident have been released by the Dearborn Heights Police Department.

“DearbornHeights (has) identified the person who fired the shot and killed the woman,” according to a press release. The statement added that a final report on the shooting will be forwarded to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for review in the near future.

McBride’s maternal aunt, Bernita Spinks, said the shooting was not justified even if the resident believed McBride was an intruder breaking into the home.

“He shot her in the head … for what? For knocking on his door,” said Spinks on Tuesday. “If he felt scared or threatened, he should have called 911.”

    — – -Complaint Filed Urging the IRS to Investigate the Koch Brothers for Violating Tax Laws– –

    — – - CREW has filed a complaint that urges the IRS to investigate the Koch Brothers for violating numerous tax laws, while trying to anonymously funnel money to Republican candidates.

CREW detailed their complaint to the IRS,

CREW also filed a complaint with the IRS asking for an investigation into the activities of Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, Inc., a 501(c)(6) organization linked to the Koch Brothers.
In its application to the IRS, Freedom Partners claimed it would be
“promot[ing] the common business interests and conditions of its
members, in order to improve their competitive standing and innovation in various lines of business, industries, etc. in which they are engaged.” In reality, Freedom Partners has done nothing except funnel anonymous money into other tax-exempt organizations.

    – - -SNIP- -

What the Koch brothers are doing is common practice on the right.
These common business organizations actually have nothing to do with business. Their purpose is to move millions of dollars to the network of right wing anonymous organizations.
Since the Supreme Court opened the floodgates with the Citizens United decision, the Koch brothers have set up a vast dark money network with the goal in mind of complete ownership of the government.

CREW’s complaint is important because it brings the Koch brothers unwanted attention. The Kocks don’t want the people to figure out that their democracy is under threat from a handful of conservative billionaires. It is clear that what the Kochs and other right wing billionaires are doing is a violation of the tax code.

—–Senator Obliterates GOP Talking Point On Obamacare’s Maternity Coverage In 60 Seconds

    – — -During a hearing on Obamacare implementation Tuesday, Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) committee chairman Sen. Tom Harkin(D-IA) offered a powerful rebuttal to those criticizing the Affordable Care Act’s inclusion of maternity care coverage as one of ten “essential health benefits” categories that insurance companies must offer consumers under the health law.
ACA critics have held up the maternity coverage requirement as a prime example of excessive Obamacare regulations that will drive up insurance policy prices by forcing plans to include frilly benefits that a consumer may not need.
Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) sarcastically asked Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius if she had ever hear of a man giving birth during a House hearing last week, and numerous critical media accounts have picked up on the argument.

Harkin responded to this line of thinking on Tuesday by comparing the overall societal value of the coverage requirement to the value of public education, which is funded through property taxes:

HARKIN: Now, I must say there was a story the other day
in the paper about somebody who said, “Now I got — I have to take this policy that covers maternity care. My wife and I are not having more children. Why should I have to have a policy that covers maternity care?”
I got to thinking about that. I thought, you know what? Maybe because my wife and I do not have any more children and they are grown up, maybe I should not have to pay property taxes to pay for my local schools. Huh? Why should I worry about it? Maybe only people who have kids going to the public school should pay for it. We are better than that in this country. We are talking about being part of our society.
It is to our benefit, my wife and I, to support our local schools because that is our next generation, we want them well taught. Same with health care. It is a values system.
