John Alexander Somerville emigrated to the United States from Jamaica around 1900.  He and his wife, Vada Watson Somerville, were both graduates of the University of Southern California School of Dentistry.  Graduating with honors in 1907, he was the first black graduate, and his wife was later the first black woman graduate.  In 1914, only three years after its founding in New York City, the Los Angeles branch of the NAACP was created at the home of John and Vada Somerville.  His first major business venture, the Somerville Hotel, was a principal African American enterprise on Central Avenue, in the heart of the Los Angeles African American community.  When it opened in 1928 it was one of the most upscale black hotels in the United States, and counted a number of African American celebrities among its guests.

With the onset of the Depression, the facility was sold and renamed the Dunbar Hotel in honor of the famed black poet.  The scene for at least one black film, and a major community landmark for many years, the Dunbar Hotel declined in the 1960s, but has now been revived and has been designated a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument.  In addition to developing other properties in the Los Angeles area, throughout the years both he and his wife were active in community affairs and civil rights work.  In 1949 he published his autobiography, Man of Color, and in addition to being the second African American on the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, served on the Police Commission from 1949 to 1953.  In 1953 he was named Officer of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II.

The Great Migration brought many African Americans to Los Angeles in the 1920s. Housing covenants and other forms of discrimination followed them and forced the creation of a black community along South Central Avenue. For decades, the most popular spot in this district (and all of Los Angeles, for African Americans) was the Dunbar Hotel.

Originally named the Somerville Hotel and located on 41st street and South Central Avenue, it was erected in June of 1928 in reaction not only to the complete lack of first rate accommodations in Los Angeles for blacks who were denied service at white-owned hotels, but also by a need for employment and self-enterprise in the community.

Dr. John Somerville, the hotel’s namesake, was a Jamaican-born businessman and the first African American to graduate from the University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Dentistry. He would eventually become instrumental in opening the Los Angeles National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) chapter,  preside as its first president, become the second African American member of the Chamber of Commerce and serve on the Los Angeles police commission from 1949 to 1953.

Somerville’s project was aided by all-black laborers, contractors, craftsman, and donors from the local community. Three floors of finely furnished rooms were atop an expensive first floor featuring a plethora of stores and a dining hall complete with orchestra balcony. It was the first hotel built by black people; usually African Americans bought and refurbished old hotel buildings vacated by whites.

The Somerville Hotel took its place as the heart of African American culture in Los Angeles.  Given its upscale atmosphere, the presence of Club Alabam within its premises, its prime location on a two-block strip of jazz clubs, and its virtual monopoly on accommodations for black people, every major African American dignitary visiting Los Angeles stayed there. Congressman Oscar DePriest, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, and entertainers Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Herb Jefferies, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Jimmie Lunceford, Lena Horne, and Billie Holiday were all guests at the Somerville. The first NAACP convention on the west coast was also held there in 1928.

After the Stock Market crash in 1929, Somerville sold the hotel to lawyer Lucius Lomax, who renamed it after poet Paul Laurence Dunbar.  It continued to be the leading black hotel on the west coast in the 1930s and 1940s.  In the 1950s, however, as housing covenants were abolished, the Dunbar Hotel’s business declined as well.  The Watts Riots in 1965 exacerbated the exodus from South Central Avenue and by 1974 the hotel closed its doors.

In 1975 Bernard Johnson established the nonprofit Dunbar Hotel Black Cultural and Historical Museum, Inc, comprised of longtime activists and assorted professionals. Their organization successfully lobbied to get the Dunbar Hotel on the national register of historic places, but it was vacant and deteriorating until 1990 when it was rededicated as a museum and cultural center. The old rooms are now low-income housing and the surrounding neighborhood is mostly Latino.

Bernie Sanders Sends Republicans Into Cold Sweats With a Truth Bomb About Obamacare
    By: Jason Easley
    Monday, April, 7th, 2014, 8:53 pm

Bernie Sanders described the Republican Party’s worst nightmare, and likely gave the GOP cold sweats by telling the truth about the success of the ACA.

Sen Sanders (I-VT) nailed it. Republicans are terrified that more people are going to be able to see a doctor. They are scared that people will realize that the government can make positive things happen, and they hate the ACA because it is an example of the government doing something for someone other than wealthy billionaires.

Republicans believe that government should only serve the interests of the wealthy. This belief is the basis for their whole job creators mentality. The people who aren’t job creators are “takers” who deserve nothing, and should be left to fend for themselves.

The ACA shatters this ideology. The Afforable Care Act demonstrates what happens when government acts in the best interests of the majority. Once people figure out that the Republicans were wrong about Obamacare, there is nothing stopping them from demanding that

Jeb Bush Will Never Be President

Mainly because Jeb Bush will never survive a GOP primary. Not after consecutive losses by McCain and Romney, and certainly not with his record on immigration.

Former Florida governor Jeb Bush said Sunday that many who illegally come to the United States do so out of an “act of love” for their families and should be treated differently than people who illegally cross U.S. borders or overstay visas.

This right here has ended his 2016 prospects before they ever began.

Asked about immigration, Bush started by saying that a bipartisan bill passed by the Senate last year made “a good effort” at proposing ways to ensure that people overstaying visas leave the country.

“There are means by which we can control our border better than we have. And there should be penalties for breaking the law,” he added. “But the way I look at this — and I’m going to say this, and it’ll be on tape and so be it. The way I look at this is someone who comes to our country because they couldn’t come legally, they come to our country because their families — the dad who loved their children — was worried that their children didn’t have food on the table. And they wanted to make sure their family was intact, and they crossed the border because they had no other means to work to be able to provide for their family. Yes, they broke the law, but it’s not a felony. It’s an act of love. It’s an act of commitment to your family. I honestly think that that is a different kind of crime that there should be a price paid, but it shouldn’t rile people up that people are actually coming to this country to provide for their families.”

Nigeria passes South Africa to become Africa’s biggest economy

    By Agence France-Presse
    Sunday, April 6, 2014 20:29 EDT

Nigeria on Sunday became Africa’s biggest economy, leap-frogging South Africa, after the government announced a long-overdue rebasing of the country’s gross domestic product.

The new calculations take into account changes in production and consumption since the last time the exercise was carried out in 1990, including an added focus on communications and the movie industry.

The data indicated that the economy grew to $453 billion in 2012, instead of $264 billion as measured by the World Bank for that year

I am clueless. Is this for real? How could GW sit next to Clinton ?

      • Daltex82

It’s very real, they are all sitting in Dallas Cowboys owner Bubba Jones’ box at AT & T Stadium.

Clinton can sit next to Bush because he is one of them, more so than a lot of his staunch supports like to admit. Not to beat a dead horse, but this is one of the reasons why I cringe at the thought of his wife winning the Presidency. They (because you know Bill will be all up in the goings on in the West Wing) will IMHO be all to willing to bend to the wishes of the GOP just to curry favor.

        • jziglar

That’s one of the main reasons people were turned off to Hillary’s campaign in 2008. Bill’s behavior and his ego had a lot of people concerned. And you know if his wife becomes president he will try to intervene in Presidential affairs.

New York’s Paid Sick Leave Law Quietly Takes Effect

[....] As a result of the new law, about 1.2 million workers will have paid sick leave for the first time, according to Nancy Rankin, vice president for policy research at the Community Service Society of New York, a group that works on behalf of low-income New Yorkers.

That’s about 240,000 more people than would have received the benefit if the mayor hadn’t expanded the scope of the policy. Under the new law, companies with five or more employees will have to provide up to five paid days off to workers if they, or their close relatives, fall ill.[....]

This is all some sick twisted attempt to make PBO headlining the NAN conference some “controversy” for the media. Watch some idiot in the WHPC ask about it today.

Imma bet right now that Ed Henry, Chuck Todd or Jonathan Karl will ask about this today in the WH press briefing. If I’m right I’ll treat myself to a very unhealthy Firehouse sub for lunch. If I’m wrong, I’ll get a salad.

Jeb Bush Talks Approach If He Runs for President – April 6, 2014

With eyes increasingly on him, Jeb Bush signaled on Sunday the kind of campaign he would mount if he runs for president, one arguing against ideological purity tests while challenging party orthodoxy on issues like immigration and education.

Even as he sharply criticized President Obama for his handling of foreign affairs and health care, Mr. Bush made clear that he would run against the style of politics that has characterized recent Republican nominating contests. He said he would decide by the end of the year, in part on whether he thinks he could avoid “the vortex of a mud fight” with a “hopeful” message.[....]

Oakland Artist Turns Illegally Dumped Trash Into Homes For Homeless

Greg Kloehn wonders why it didn’t dawn on him sooner. The West Oakland artist had long been fascinated by the temporary shelters his homeless neighbors created for themselves out of materials they scavenged from the street. So fascinated, in fact, a couple of years ago, Greg decided to give one a try.[....] One week (and $50) later, he had one: a tiny home on wheels, long enough to lie down in, not tall enough to stand in, roughly the size of a compact car.[....]

Each morning, with a cup of coffee in one hand and his van’s steering wheel in the other, Greg scours the streets around his home and studio looking for the piles of illegally dumped trash that show up every night. From the piles he takes anything that might help him build a home: pallets, 2x4s, refrigerator doors and shelving, and paint. A team of volunteers helps Greg mold those pieces into tiny, moveable structures. Since his first home give-away, Greg has built more than a dozen small homes on wheels and gifted them to the area’s homeless.[...]

Set up to fail when he was hired, UConn’s Kevin Ollie has instead beat the odds
    By Jeff Eisenberg7 hours ago

ARLINGTON, Texas. — As Kevin Ollie waded through ankle-high confetti after Monday night’s national title game in search of someone to embrace, one of the Connecticut coach’s friends wrapped him in a bear hug and sung the ubiquitous chorus from Drake’s hit song “Started From The Bottom.”

They were the ideal lyrics for the moment even if the rapper who sings them was rooting for the other team.

UConn’s 60-54 upset of Kentucky served as the final step in Ollie’s quest to guide the Huskies through the most challenging period in their program’s recent history. In two seasons at his alma mater, Ollie navigated UConn through a one-year postseason ban, proved to skeptical fans and administrators he deserved the full-time job and emerged from the shadow of his mentor Jim Calhoun by leading the seventh-seeded Huskies on an improbable title run.

But UConn coach Kevin Ollie, who represents a new breed of young, relatable coaches, thought this was attainable. And his players believed him when he told them they could win a national championship a year after the NCAA blocked the program from the postseason due to APR failures.

He’s been the motivator, the teacher and the leader all season.

And now, he’s just the winner.

Disclosing Doctors’ Medicare Pay Might Be ‘Pretty Damning’

The Obama administration’s plan to release how much the Medicare system paid individual doctors for specific procedures could blow the lid off one of the most jealously guarded secrets in medicine. Since a court injunction sealed Medicare’s physician-pay records in 1979, the American Medical Association has successfully shielded physicians from public scrutiny of how much they’re paid by the federal health program for everything from flu shots to brain surgeries.

Release of the payment data, coming as soon as Wednesday, should give researchers, journalists, and resourceful consumers their first look at just how much doctors make from ordering all sorts of tests and procedures on their patients—whether the patients need them or not.[...]

The GOP been running around hollering about activist judges for years, putting judges lives in actual danger in the process – but its the Dems that are demonizing judges? And I love how the mean ole Dems scared Roberts into upholding ACA out of fear. SMH, that liberal media…I tell ya.

    Dems seek to demonize justices
By Alexander Bolton – 04/08/14 06:00 AM EDT

Senate Democrats and liberal groups are mounting a pressure campaign against the Supreme Court, hoping to influence future decisions by blasting conservative justices for alleged political bias.

The effort from the left also portrays the high court as an instrument rigged to help the wealthy, and is intended to energize Democratic voters and increase turnout in the midterm elections.

Some legal experts see the effort as akin to basketball or soccer players “working the ref” in a high-stakes game.

Critics say Democratic leaders used a similar strategy in 2010, when they piled on the court for striking down the ban on political spending by corporations in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission.

Some court watchers speculated that Chief Justice John Roberts felt chastened by the angry reaction and sought to avoid another uproar, when he crafted the majority decision in 2012 that largely upheld ObamaCare.

Massachusetts Domestic Workers Are Close To Protection From Abuse And Guaranteed Time Off

[....] The state’s Domestic Workers’ Bill of Rights would change its labor laws so that the 67,000 people who work inside others’ homes would get a day off each week, guaranteed breaks for meals and rest, and vacation, sick time, and parental leave. They would also get better protections from discrimination and sexual harassment plus the right to be notified of termination, as well as the ability to file complaints with the state’s Commission Against Discrimination.[....]

It also raises the minimum wage to $10.50 within two years without linking future increases to rising inflation, while a bill already passed by the Senate would put the wage at $11 within three years and peg it to rising costs. Both bills also raise the minimum wage for tipped workers. The two chambers will have to find a compromise before a bill could head to the desk of Gov. Deval Patrick (D) for a signature.[...]

DEA Chief Leonhart: Dogs Will Eat Your Stash If Pot Is Legal

The House Appropriations Committee is currently holding a hearing on legalizing marijuana. Among those testifying are Attorney General Eric Holder and DEA Chief Michele Leonhart. While Holder told the committee that he and the White House are open to reclassifying marijuana, Leonhart wasn’t quite so ready to change things.[....]

Leonhart went on to claim that the Mexican cartels would be setting up shop in both states as soon as prices were set, so that they could undersell legitimate pot retailers. She even said that dispensaries are currently getting their supplies from those same cartels (something I know for a fact is not true).

Leonhart also told Rep. Frank Wolfe (R-VA)that the DEA will “fight harder”now that the tide is turning. Maybe I’m just being cynical, but I can’t help but think that the main reason the DEA will “fight harder” is the confiscatory policies that they rely on for some of their operating capital. Come on, Ms. Leonhart, who do you think you’re kidding?[....]

Kanye West Calls Out NBA, NFL Stars
I Defeated All Of You in Battle for Kim’s Ass
21 minutes ago BY TMZ STAFF

Kanye West is spiking the football … bragging that he defeated NBA and NFL players like Reggie Bush and Kris Humphries to win the rights to bang Kim Kardashian.

West just appeared on Future’s new single, “I Won” — and raps about his most prized conquest, Kim … saying, “I want to dip that ass in gold, I want to dip that ass in gold.”

Then comes the smack talk — “I made it over NBA, NFL players … So every time I score it’s like the Super Bowl.”

K’s obviously referring to Bush, Humphries and NFL wide receiver Miles Austin — who all dated Kim and all happen to be pro athletes.

It’s not the first time K’s gone after one of Kim’s exes — she ripped Humphries in a song called “Cold” — when he bragged that Kris was lucky K didn’t get his pal Jay Z to drop him from the Nets.

      • gn

Who all ate the burger too…how can he have won the competition if everyone’s scored the same…I actually think Kanye’s being disrespectful to his fiance. If he loves her regardless of her past, no need to keep bringing it up. They have a daughter to think about.

        • Miranda

He is so arrogant and conceited that there is no way he has enough love for Kim or North left over from all that he pours on himself. You can’t make me believe he loves them with these antics. Its so tacky and disrespectful its obvious he can’t conceive of what her feelings may be in this foolishness……and remember, he said not one word when she had to go be that old rich man’s escort in Austria. SMH…its so nasty and gross what they represent.

          • gn

Indeed, this is pure narcissism. What’s poetic justice is that he’s making more of a fool of himself than her anyway. At the end of the day, everyone knows Kim’s slutty including Kim. He’s the one who looks like an idiot for trying to make everyone else think he’s got some huge prize. I never notice Tyga and other guys who have gotten with strippers with fake booties etc. trying so HARD to make everyone else admire their choice. Kanye by contrast is making himself look insecure and almost con-artist-ish. Like he wants to prove that he’s so great that he can force people to view someone like Kim Kardashian as on par with a Michelle Obama.

          • TyrenM

Sure he did. Don’t come home broke.

    • itgurl_29

Kanye is so freakin’ STUPID. Every black man in sports and entertainment under the age of 40 has ran through Kim Kardashian. But Kanye is the only one stupid enough to see her as some sort of prize to the point that he’s got a kid with her and is about to marry her. Everyone else, from Reggie Bush to Ray Jay to Nick Cannon is saying “glad it wasn’t me”.

Bobby Jindal’s Corrupt Regime Swatted Down by Federal Court as MoveOn Wins

A victory for free speech and a defeat for Bobby Jindal in his administration’s attempt to force MoveOn.org to remove their truth-telling billboard in Louisiana. As MoveOn reported yesterday, Judge Shelly D. Dick of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Louisiana issued a ruling in Dardenne v MoveOn rejecting the state of Louisiana’s attempt to force MoveOn.org to take down a billboard criticizing Gov. Bobby Jindal for denying health care to 242,000 Louisianians.

Judge Dick thought it was pretty obvious that the MoveOn billboard
was not an official state billboard, saying in her ruling that, “the Lieutenant Governor [Lt. Gov. Dardenne] underestimates the intelligence and reasonableness of people viewing the billboard.”[...]

California Truckers Will Get $2.2 Million In Back Pay For Being Misclassified

[....] By labeling the drivers independent contractors rather than employees, Pacer Cartage, Inc. was able to avoid paying the workers for things like time spent waiting at the port to pick up a load and reimbursements for job expenses.[....] The California Labor Commissioner’s Division of Labor Standards Enforcement (DLSE) ruled that the company “knew or should have known” that the drivers were employees rather than contractors and instructed Pacer to pay $2,214,496.39 in restitution, attorney’s fees, and interest.

Workers’ advocates stressed that Wednesday’s decision is especially significant because Pacer and its parent company XPO Logistics are one of the two largest companies in the industry. Gomez Law Group head Alvin Gomez called it “a tremendous victory” that “will force the drayage industry to make long overdue changes in their business practices.” [....]

Jamelle Bouie: Jonathan Chait’s Look At Race During The Obama Era Is Missing One Thing: Black Americans

You should contrast this with Jonathan Chait’s most recent feature for New York magazine, where the story of race in the Obama administration is a story of mutual grievance between Americans on the left and right, with little interest in the lived experiences of racism from black Americans and other people of color. It’s a story, in other words, that treats race as an intellectual exercise—a low-stakes cocktail party argument between white liberals and white conservatives over their respective racial innocence. That might fit the experiences of a mostly white pundit class, but it has nothing to do with race as experienced in the “day-to-day” lives of ordinary people. When a twentysomething black New Yorker talks about race, she isn’t as concerned with the rhetoric of Republicans as she is with the patrol car that trails her teenage brother when he rides his bike to the corner store.

What’s odd about the argument is that Chait clearly shows the extent to which conservatism—even if it isn’t “racist”—works to entrench racial inequality through “colorblindness” and pointed opposition to the activist state. But rather than take that to its conclusion, he asks us to look away.Of course, it’s not accusing conservatives of “racism” to note that particular policies—say, tax cuts to defund the social safety net, or blocking the Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act—have a disparate impact. That’s just reality. And it’s not tarring your opponents to note that race plays a huge part in building popular support for those policies. Chait finishes his piece with a note (a hope?) that this dynamic of grievance will become irrelevant with time: “The passing from the scene of the nation’s first black president in three years, and the near-certain election of its 45th nonblack one, will likely ease the mutual suspicion. In the long run, generational changes grind inexorably away.” Yes, the Return of the White President will cause this tension to recede, as arguments over racial innocence—“You’re racist!” “You’re a race baiter!”—fade like the elves of Middle-Earth. But that’s only the end of the story if you’re most concerned with partisan fights.

GOP megadonor uses played-out Hitler meme to make attack on Obamacare
By David Ferguson Tuesday, April 8, 2014 10:00 EDT

Republican mega-donor Foster Friess posted a parody video on his blog this week using a clip from a German film about Adolf Hitler’s last hours to attack the Affordable Care Act — also known as “Obamacare.”

The video, titled, “Hitler finds out he can’t keep his doctor,” utilizes footage from the climactic “inside Hitler’s bunker” scenes from the 2004 film “Der Untergang,” or “Downfall.” Actor Bruno Ganz, playing Hitler, screamed at his aides before committing suicide with a revolver off camera, playing out what is known, historically, of Hitler’s last acts.
    [...]
Seven years later, Friess is perhaps using it to try and capture a youthful, edgy vibe around resistance to the ACA. In this version of “Downfall,” Adolf Hitler was informed that after his meeting with former White House employee Valarie Jarrett, he will be seeing a Jewish doctor for a prostate cancer check.

“I don’t want a Jew like Feingold poking around my bum,” Hitler replied in the subtitles. “Just make an appointment with Dr. Steiner.”

LAPD officers tampered with in-car recording equipment, records show

An inspection by Los Angeles Police Department investigators found about half of the estimated 80 cars in one South L.A. patrol division were missing antennas, which help capture what officers say in the field. The antennas in at least 10 more cars in nearby divisions had also been removed.[....] Most of the antennas were removed from cars in the Southeast Division, which covers Watts, Jordan Downs and Nickerson Gardens, where relations between police and minority communities have historically been marred by mistrust and claims of officer abuse.[....]

A federal judge last year formally ended more than a decade of close monitoring of the LAPD by the U.S. Department of Justice. The judge agreed to lift the oversight, in part, after city and police leaders made assurances that the LAPD had adequate safeguards, such as the cameras, in place to monitor itself.[....]

Staffer caught kissing Louisiana Congressman Vance McAllister fired: report
    on April 08, 2014 at 8:41 AM

The married staffer reportedly shown in a video kissing U.S. Rep. Vance McAllister, R-Swartz, has been “taken off the payroll,” according to The News-Star. The move comes after a video surfaced Monday, reportedly showing McAllister, who is married, and his district scheduler Melissa Anne Hixon Peacock, 33, locked in an embrace and kissing.

The video is dated Dec. 23, just a little more than a month after McAllister was elected to Louisiana’s 5th Congressional District and was sent to the Citizen by an anonymous source, according to the newspaper’s report.

The News-Star published a story Monday and quoted Adam Terry, McAllister’s chief of staff, as saying that Peacock was taken off of the payroll during the past 24 hours.

Gov. Scott Walker wants to finish college degree
By Jason Stein of the Journal Sentinel
    April 7, 2014

Madison — More than two decades after leaving Marquette University without finishing up his degree, Gov. Scott Walker wants to earn his diploma.

A spokeswoman said the governor wants to finish his college degree through the University of Wisconsin-System’s innovative online course offerings. For now, however, Walker is still waiting for the right degree program to be added to the lineup of the still fledgling program.

“Governor Walker would like to finish his degree through the UW FlexOption once they expand the degree offerings,” Laurel Patrick said.

Long Island nursing home sued over alleged stripper party
    Updated at 12:26 PM today

WEST BABYLON (WABC) — Relatives of a former patient at a Long Island nursing home have filed a lawsuit claiming the 85-year-old woman was subjected to an unwanted performance by a male stripper while living in the East Neck Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

According to the lawsuit, filed last month against the West Babylon facility, Bernice Youngblood’s son found a photograph in January 2013 of the stripper gyrating in front of the woman.

The image also shows Youngblood shoving dollar bills into the dancer’s underwear.

It is not known who shot the photo or when it was taken, and other patients are also in the picture.

lol, so let’s add La Cosa Nostra to the list of dudebro heroes. I”m finding this extremely amusing.

    • Alma98

You know this is all about the Rev’s relationship with PBO. I noticed while watching the Bio channel mobsters are called mobsters while black folks are called evil gangsters. White folks are trying to white wash killers, drug dealers in the mob. They’re no different, it’s just that one has been romanticized while the other has been vilified.

      • Aquagranny911

Can we say… the Godfather Trilogy, Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire & several other popular films of that ilk, even the reality series Real Housewives of New Jersey. The mob are such great guys after all…BS!

Some of them “retired” out to AZ, including Joe “bananas” in the ’60′s. They continued to stick their fingers in pies here. Lots of people were scared of them. A local reporter doing investigations back then got himself blown up to stop it. That’s when the Feds & local law really clamped down on them.

Good on the Rev Al for standing up to the scumsuckers!

        • Alma98

            Was Goldwater mob?

          • Aquagranny911

No, but I don’t think he would have hesitated to take money from them for his campaigns. I don’t know for sure. Several prominent families here were not above rubbing elbows with some dubious characters.

          • Aquagranny911

Goldwater fam were here from back in the really early days, pre-statehood, I believe. They owned a department store until about the mid ’80′s when it was bought out by Macy’s. (I think)

    • Guns3000

It doesn’t take cajones if you think you’re going to prison if you don’t do it. I admire Rev past and current work as much as anyone but I read Smoking Gun’s entire report this morning. The timing is interesting for this information coming to light but lets not act like Mob members were hanging out with Sharpton for spiritual guidance. For anyone involved in criminal activity especially mob members to explicitly have verbal discussions with or in front of Al Sharpton and for him to be able to surreptiously record them tells me all I need to know about the nature of the relationship. With all that being said he has made enemies. People are jealous of his success and his access of certain corridors of power. His enemies will do anything to sabotage his success and the Smoking Gun report is merely a manifestation of that.

New Poll Shows Voters in Red States Want to Expand Medicaid
    April 8, 2014

    excerpt:
According to new polling by Public Policy Poling conducted for MoveOn, in voters support Medicaid expansion in key states by wide margins: 52 to 35 percent in Kansas, 58 to 33 percent in Florida, 59 to 30 percent in Pennsylvania, 54 to 38 percent in Georgia. All are states where Medicaid expansion has been blocked by Republican politicians. In Virginia, where the GOP has also blocked Medicaid expansion, a previous poll found that even a majority of state Republican voters support extending coverage for the state’s low-income residents. And other polls show that three-out-of-four Americans nationwide, including a majority of Republicans, support Medicaid expansion.

Nevertheless, Republicans are actively, single-handedly blocking health coverage for 5 million Americans in 24 states.
