Tuesday Open Thread: Black Dancers Who Changed American Dance

John William Sublett (February 19, 1902 – May 18, 1986), known by his stage name John W. Bubbles, was a vaudeville performer. He performed in the duo “Buck and Bubbles.” He is also known as the father of “rhythm tap.”

He was born in Louisville, Kentucky on February 19, 1902, but soon moved with his family to Indianapolis. There, he formed a partnership with Ford L. “Buck” Washington in 1919. Their duo was known as “Buck and Bubbles.” Buck played stride piano and sang, and Bubbles tapped along. They were so popular that the duo moved to Manhattan, New York City in September of that year. They played together at the Columbia Theater, the Palace and played with artists Al Jolson, Eddie Cantor and Danny Kaye. They were on the Ziegfeld Follies of 1931. They also became the first black artists to perform at the Radio City Music Hall. “Buck and Bubbles” performed live in the first scheduled ‘high definition’ television program on November 2, 1936, at Alexandra Palace, London, for the BBC, becoming the first black artists on television anywhere in the world.

Though unable to read music, Bubbles was chosen by George Gershwin to create the role of Sportin’ Life in his opera Porgy and Bessin 1935. Since he didn’t understand the music score, Gershwin spent the time to teach it to him as a tap rhythm. Sublett caused some problems because he often made up rhythms which caused confusion with other members of the cast.  Sublett performed the role occasionally for the next two decades. In 1963, in a studio recording of Porgy and Bess featuring Leontyne Price and William Warfield, he performed Sportin’ Life’s two main arias from the opera, “It Ain’t Necessarily So” and “There’s A Boat Dat’s Leavin’ Soon For New York”.

In 1920 he gave lessons in tap dancing to Fred Astaire, who considered Sublett the finest tap dancer of his generation. In the number “Bojangles of Harlem” from Swing Time (1936) Astaire dresses in blackface as the Sportin’ Life character and dances in the style of Sublett while ostensibly paying tribute to Bill Robinson.

Sublett appeared in Hollywood films of the late 1930s and 1940s, including Varsity Show in 1937, Cabin in the Sky in 1943 and A Song Is Born in 1948. In later life, he also made television appearances, one of his last being on a musical episode of The Lucy Show, which also guest-starred Mel Tormé and a featured performance on Barbra Streisand’s 1967 TV special, The Belle of 14th Street, a tribute to the bygone era of vaudeville.

During the Vietnam War, John Bubbles toured the war zone with the USO. In 1965, he appeared with Eddie Fisher on a USO tour, visiting many outposts and camps in the early war years. He appeared with Judy Garland in her 1967 concert at the Palace Theatre, singing “Me And My Shadow.” That same year, he became partially paralyzed due to a stroke.

In 1978, John Bubbles spoke at the Variety Arts Theatre in Los Angeles as a participant in a seminar on vaudeville. Someone asked him who the best tap dancer was. Bubbles answered, “You’re looking at him.” Then he added, “Honestly if I had to name the best dancer, it would be Fred Astaire. He could tap. He had a good teacher. But he could ballroom, dance with a partner. All in all, he’s the best.” That same night, Bubbles mentioned that Astaire had brought him into the rehearsal hall to work on “Bojangles of Harlem” and John’s chops are right there in the number.

He performed at the Newport Jazz Festival in New York in 1979, which was one of his last public appearances. Sublett died on May 18, 1986, at his home in Baldwin Hills, California.

Sublett is known as the father of “rhythm tap,” a form of tap dance. Sublett included percussive heel drops in his tap style, as opposed to the tap dancing of Bill Robinson (Bojangles) who emphasized clean phrases and toe taps. Sublett’s taps were made to the traditional eight-bar phrase but allowed for more rhythmic freedom. He blended the improvisational style of jazz music with the traditional techniques of tap to create a unique style and sound.

Sublett received the 1980 Life Achievement Award from the American Guild of Variety Artists. He was inducted into the Tap Hall of Fame in 2002.

Sublett was remembered by many celebrities; his catchphrase, “Shoot the liquor to me, John Boy,” has been quoted in songs by several artists, including The Manhattan Transfer, The Ink Spots, and Louis Armstrong. Michael Jackson admired Bubbles’ dancing and studied his steps for inspiration. In the mid-1980s Jackson named his beloved pet chimpanzee “Bubbles” in memory of John Sublett

Trump appeals to loyalists as support slips, agenda stalls
    Aug 8, 2017

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is trying to combat new weakness in his Republican base and re-energize his staunchest supporters after months of White House backbiting and legislative failures.

White House officials have been urging the president to fire up his efforts on immigration and other agenda items favored by conservatives, evangelicals and working-class whites who propelled him to the Oval Office. The president has increased his media-bashing via Twitter and staged rallies hoping to marshal his base to his defense. On Monday, he lashed out at Democratic Sen. Richard Blumenthal in multiple tweets after the lawmaker expressed support for a special counsel’s probe of Trump’s associates’ links to Russia.

Government Report Finds Drastic Impact of Climate Change on U.S. but Scientists Fear Trump Will Suppress Climate Report
    AUG. 7, 2017

WASHINGTON — The average temperature in the United States has risen rapidly and drastically since 1980, and recent decades have been the warmest of the past 1,500 years, according to a sweeping federal climate change report awaiting approval by the Trump administration.

The draft report by scientists from 13 federal agencies, which has not yet been made public, concludes that Americans are feeling the effects of climate change right now. It directly contradicts claims by President Trump and members of his cabinet who say that the human contribution to climate change is uncertain, and that the ability to predict the effects is limited.

“Evidence for a changing climate abounds, from the top of the atmosphere to the depths of the oceans,” a draft of the report states. A copy of it was obtained by The New York Times.

The authors note that thousands of studies, conducted by tens of thousands of scientists, have documented climate changes on land and in the air. “Many lines of evidence demonstrate that human activities, especially emissions of greenhouse (heat-trapping) gases, are primarily responsible for recent observed climate change,” they wrote.

The report was completed this year and is a special science section of the National Climate Assessment, which is congressionally mandated every four years. The National Academy of Sciences has signed off on the draft report, and the authors are awaiting permission from the Trump administration to release it.

It’s not new, it’s been happening way before 2015. Many “hippies” came from well to do backgrounds and once their parents stopped subsidizing their “poor” fantasies, those same hippies put on their navy blue suits and went to work at the bank or insurance company thanks to a relative hookup and moved to the suburbs.

Fake dems & libs, are nothing but libertarians.

    • Commonly known as Reagan Democrats. A lot of hippies were hilarious. Protesting and rebelling everything because they knew mommy and daddy were sending the hefty allowance checks to whatever Volkswagon Van they were living out of.

Then these same folks became the most virulent racist on planet earth when they realized their parents were “right all along” about those people.

Thank you. That’s why I wasn’t shocked when THEIR kids were eating $25 kale salads and drinking $10 water while sitting in their $500 tent to Occupy Wall Street.

    • Town

Most extremists and radicals come from well to do backgrounds. Look at most of the people in Al Qaeda, they came from VERY affluent backgrounds. Most of the people in the Tea Party aren’t broke, they were very affluent and the median income of a Trump supporter is $77K.

    Sanders ‘litmus test’ alarms Democrats
Bernie Sanders’ single-payer plan sparks fears of primary election challenges.
    08/07/2017 06:20 PM EDT

House and Senate Democrats have wondered for months whether Bernie Sanders’ supporters might choose to focus their energy on launching primary challenges to party moderates in 2018. They’re about to get an answer.

Sanders has decided the moment is right to launch his proposal for the single-payer health insurance system that helped form the backbone of his presidential message. And Democrats who don’t get behind it could find themselves on the wrong side of the most energetic wing of the party — as well as the once and possibly future presidential candidate who serves as its figurehead.

The Vermont senator himself has not explicitly said he’ll support primary challenges to those who won’t support his push for a so-called Medicare-for-all health care plan. But there are plenty of signs that Sanders and his allies view the issue as a defining moment for Democratic lawmakers.

“Our view is that within the Democratic Party, this is fast-emerging as a litmus test,” said Ben Tulchin, the pollster for Sanders’ White House run.

    (2) Here’s a follow-up. Nunes is a proven (quasi-clandestine) Trump agent; he’s not part of the House probe anymore.

    (3) British media is already *all over* this. Now *American* media must find out what the White House knew about this secret overseas trip.

    (4) We’ve had media reports for months suggesting President Trump is obsessed with Chris Steele and his dossier. This is what that’s led to.

    (5) Remember how it went down last time Trump (via Nunes) attempted a clandestine interference op in the Russia probe? *Smelled like this*.

    (6) The *unanswered* question is exactly what did these (plausibly
deniable) White House/Nunes agents intend to *do* once they found
    Steele?

    (7) The extraordinary level of secrecy and under-the-table funding
stream suggest that, as I’ve saying, Donald Trump is terrified of
    Steele.

The future of the Democratic Party
does not rest on the back of Kamala Harris, the junior senator from
California. Furthermore, it is unfair for the Democratic Party to keep
hanging its hope on black messianic figures, whom it hopes can bring new relevance to a struggling party. To be clear, there is a lot to like about Harris, the first black woman to hold a Senate position since Carol Moseley-Braun in the 1990s. Despite Ryan Cooper’s screed last week about “why leftists don’t trust Kamala Harris, Cory Booker and Deval Patrick,” Harris’s policy positions
on free college, single payer health care, an increased minimum wage, and criminal justice reform, are solidly to the left. Still. Black women are not Jesus. It’s not right to expect us to fix what white Americans are so committed to breaking. This debate, then, isn’t about Harris, but about the emotional and political labor that black women are expected to do to save America’s soul…

The biggest lie that members of the so-called “Sanders Left” told
during the 2016 elections is that there was no appreciable difference between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. After six months of having Donald J. Trump lead the country, it’s quite clear that the left should have listened to 94 percent of black women voters. We know a disaster when we see one.

Former CEO, owner say Trump made up story about NY restaurant renovation
    08/07/17 10:20 PM EDT

The former owner and former CEO of a New York restaurant are pushing back at President Trump using claims about a renovation there in comparison to the war in Afghanistan, Page Six reported on Monday.

During a meeting with his national security team last month, Trump reportedly complained to officials that the war in Afghanistan was not going as he expected.

“We aren’t winning. We are losing,” Trump reportedly said while pushing for Gen. John Nicholson, who is overseeing the war, to be replaced.

Trump also compared the war to the renovation of New York’s 21 Club restaurant in the 1980s, claiming that the owner of the 21 Club lost money and a year of business after hiring an expensive consultant who recommended getting a bigger kitchen, something the waiters could have suggested.
But the former CEO and former owner of the restaurant are disputing those claims.

“I have no idea what was in his head. I never have,” Marshall Cogan, who owned the restaurant from 1985 to 1995, told Page Six.

The CEO of the restaurant from 1986 to 1995, Ken Aretsky, also told Page Six that no consultant was ever hired for the renovation and the renovation took less than six months.

Media bashing has become one of the organizing principles of Donald Trump’s presidency. But behind the scenes, the Trump machine is eagerly promoting the nuggets of positive press it receives from the very outlets the president seeks to discredit.

The White House director of rapid response, Andy Hemming, 31, spends his days immersed in cable television, Twitter, print and online media to suss out positive stories about Trump, which he blasts back out to his list of more than 1,000 influencers — mainly reporters, but also television talking heads — who together craft the overall story of Trump’s presidency.

    FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS

Landlord troubles: rich San Franciscans in uproar after their private street is sold

Residents in the highly exclusive Presidio Terrace neighborhood got a surprise taste of the city’s infamous housing woes after a private road was sold at auction

    …………………………

Still, in May of this year, the owners of 35 of San Francisco’s most
exclusive and expensive homes became aware of a decidedly undesirable development: they no longer owned their private street.

Two upstart real estate investors from San Jose, Tina Lam and Michael Cheng, had snapped up the street, the sidewalks and the landscaped islands of Presidio Terrace at a public auction
of tax-defaulted properties in April 2015. The pair shelled out
$90,582.50 for the plot, and they’re how exploring ways to earn a return on that investment.

    ……………………………………

Unlike the vast majority of San Francisco streets, Presidio Terrace is
private. Residents, via their HOA, are responsible for paying for the
street’s maintenance and, as with any other private property, tax.

The homeowners association stopped paying that tax many years ago, however, and in 2015, the city’s tax collector placed the property into default. That set the stage for the auction and the San Jose couple’s windfall.

The homeowners association claims that the tax went unpaid not out of any desire to avoid payment (or inability to come up with the cash), but because the city was sending the bill to the address of an
accountant who had not worked for them since the 1980s. They also fault the city for failing to send a notice of the default to any of the homeowners or their association.

They are asking the city’s board of supervisors to intervene on their
behalf and rescind the auction – a process allowed for by state law.
They’ve also filed a lawsuit against Lam and the city. If the board of
supervisors fails to rescind the sale – a vote is tentatively scheduled
for October – the association will turn to the courts, said Emblidge.

“I’m very optimistic that the city officials want to see a reasonable
end to this, and a reasonable end is to rescind the sale and put things
back the way they were,” Emblidge said. “The same thing that happened here could happen to anybody, poor or rich, that happens to have a parcel like this. The issue isn’t really a rich versus poor situation. It’s what should have to happen before someone can sell my property.

    • Miranda

I think this is hilarious. They bought that street fair and square! LOLOL

    • Alma98

      hahahahaha!!!

    • Worldwatcher7

Some very wealthy people live there, therefore the sale will probably be rescinded. Or maybe they’ll have to buy the two realtors out.

  • rikyrah

    Elections have consequences….

But…he was gonna make America great again…LOL

    On
a cloud-swept landscape dotted with grain elevators, a meat producer
called Prestage Farms is building a 700,000-square-foot processing
plant. The gleaming new factory is both the great hope of Wright County,
which voted by a 2-1 margin for Donald Trump, and the victim of one of
Trump’s first policy moves, his decision to pull out of the
    Trans-Pacific Partnership.

For much of industrial America, the TPP was a suspect deal, the
successor to the North American Free Trade Agreement, which some argue
led to a massive offshoring of U.S. jobs to Mexico. But for the
already struggling agricultural sector, the sprawling 12-nation TPP,
covering 40 percent of the world’s economy, was a lifeline. It was a
chance to erase punishing tariffs that restricted the United States—the
onetime “breadbasket of the world”—from selling its meats, grains and
dairy products to massive importers of foodstuffs such as Japan and
    Vietnam.

The decision to pull out of the trade deal has become a double hit on
places like Eagle Grove. The promised bump of $10 billion in
agricultural output over 15 years, based on estimates by the U.S.
International Trade Commission, won’t materialize. But Trump’s decision
to withdraw from the pact also cleared the way for rival exporters such
as Australia, New Zealand and the European Union to negotiate even lower
tariffs with importing nations, creating potentially greater
    competitive advantages over U.S. exports.

    ………………………..

    That
leaves workers in 13,000-person Wright County, whose survival depends
largely on agriculture, with relatively few signs of optimism. Trump’s
decision to walk away from the TPP has stoked uncertainty about U.S.
trade policy and, more notably, the president’s commitment to rural
    America.

“He fooled a lot of people,” said Sandy McGrath, mayor of Eagle Grove,
who is not affiliated with any party and did not support Trump.

Didn’t fool me, or millions like me, Boo. How come he ‘ fooled’ your neighbors…..

Engineer behind controversial manifesto is out at Google
    August 8, 2017: 1:21 PM ET

The Google engineer who wrote the 3,300-word memo criticizing the company’s diversity efforts that has roiled Silicon Valley is out.

A source inside the company told CNN Tech that James Damore, the employee behind the memo, was no longer in an online directory that lists every Google (GOOGL, Tech30) employee on Tuesday. He was listed on Monday night.
“It is official,” the source said.

Damore said in an email to Bloomberg that he was fired for “perpetuating gender stereotypes.”
Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, Reuters and others have reported that the engineer who wrote the memo, James Damore, has been fired. Google has declined to comment.

Damore shared his manifesto internally last week. It argued women are not biologically fit for tech roles.
He argued that the company’s diversity programs — including seminars that teach young girls coding skills — are “highly politicized.” The diversity work, he said, “alienates non-progressives.”

White House defends silence on mosque bombing, says it might have been faked by liberals

The White House will not officially comment on the bombing of a Minnesota mosque because it may be a hate crime faked by a liberal, according to Trump national security adviser Sebastian Gorka.

An as-of-yet unidentified individual threw a makeshift bomb through the window of a mosque in Minnesota Saturday, and Gorka was asked on MSNBC Monday if the White House will comment. Gorka said that the White House will “absolutely” comment once there is a finalized investigation into the incident.

“There’s a great rule: All initial reports are false,” Gorka said. “You have to check them and find out who the perpetrators are. We’ve had a series of crimes committed, alleged hate crimes by right wing individuals in the last six months that turned out to be prop propagated by the left. Let’s allow the local authorities to provide their assessment and then the White House will make its comments.”

So republicans are privately talking about Trump being the first president since Nixon to leave office before the end of his term or not pursue re-election. I will say this about Pence, the guy is bland as hell and has very little appeal with only love coming from white evangelicals. If he wasn’t on the ticket with Trump he would have been a one-term governor and his career would be over. And I’m not even talking about all the shady stuff he’s done with the Trump team. If they think Pence can help them in 2020 then they are sadly mistaken. The Trumpbots will be pissed that their “god” had to leave office, and the majority of America will still be repulsed by the Trump-Pence tenure.

McConnell Slams Trump for ‘Excessive Expectations’
    August 8, 2017 at 2:14 pm EDT

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) “offered some of his toughest criticism yet for President Donald Trump in a speech Monday,” CNN reports.

Said McConnell: “Our new president, of course, has not been in this line of work before. I think he had excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process.”

He added: “Part of the reason I think people think we’re under-performing is because of too many artificial deadlines unrelated to the reality of the legislature which may have not been understood.”
