Tuesday Open Thread: Black Feminists/Womanists

This week’s open threads will focus on the accomplishments of Black Feminists/Womanists.

Garvey

Amy Euphemia Jacques Garvey (31 December 1895 – 25 July 1973) was the second wife of Marcus Garvey, and a journalist and activist in her own right. She was born to George Samuel and Charlotte Henrietta (née South) Jacques, in Kingston, Jamaica.

Amy Jacques Garvey was a pioneering journalist and activist. She came to New York in 1917 and soon after became involved with publishing of the Negro World newspaper in Harlem from its inception in August 1918, highlighting the voices of Black women by publishing their writings in a column of the newspaper.

As the eldest child of George Samuel and Charlotte Henrietta, Amy was raised in a middle-class home with bourgeois Victorian values. Taylor in her account of the life of Amy Jacques Garvey refers to Amy as being “mulatta”. Charlotte Henrietta was half white, and her father was a dark-skinned black. Taylor goes on to explain that her mixed race heavily influenced her upbringing. At a young age Amy was taught to play the piano and took courses in music appreciation because music and music appreciation were believed to be considered the “cultural finishing to a girl’s education”. Amy was a part of a small minority of Jamaican youth to attend high school. It was believed that at the time less than 2% of the youth in Jamaica attended high school. Her political ideologies were derived as a direct result of her father. He urged her to read periodicals and newspapers to “enhance” her knowledge of the world.

Amy was a forward-thinking woman of her time; however, he father sought to confine her to a specific role in life. Amy also derived political ideals from her environment. Amy lived in a time when it was common for most black Jamaicans to be poor, and illiterate farmers. It is due to Europe’s colonization of Africa that many African-born Jamaicans developed a consciousness of Africa at this time. While George Samuel urged Amy to become politically aware, he reinforced the ideals of society. Amy was allowed to take shorthand classes in her later life, but only because he wished for her to become a nurse. Upon graduating school and receiving some of the highest honors of the time, Amy was recruited to work at a law firm. Her father initially said no refusing to allow his daughter to work in an environment with males. George Samuel coincidentally died that year, and the lawyer proceeding over his estate urged Charlotte Henrietta to allow Amy to work in the clerical office so that she could control the estate. Charlotte agreed, and Amy worked there for four years ultimately gaining knowledge of the legal system.

After four years of working for this company Amy left for the United States in 1918. She promised her employer and mother that she would return in three months if conditions in the U.S. were not suitable to her; Amy however, did not return. Amy’s initial interest in the United States started as a child. She allegedly justified her trip to America by arguing that her father instilled this interest in her, and that she only wished to see “the land of opportunity and its limitations”. Adler in his piece chronicling Amy’s life argues that she did not return because she was enthralled by Garveyism. He continues onward to say that she allegedly attended a conference being held by Garvey and was moved by his words. Amy soon after assumed the role of Marcus Garvey’s private secretary and worked alongside him and UNIA.

There were many contradictions in details surrounding their courtship. Many historians are confused about whether or not the two were having an affair. On one hand Marcus Garvey’s first wife, Amy Ashwood, claimed that the two were seeing each other behind her back. She speaks of infidelity and mistrust when describing the pain and humiliation that she felt. On the other hand, Marcus and Amy claim to have had no contact prior to the divorce with his first wife. The two claim to have had a mutual respect for one another but they say that their contact was limited strictly to work and friendly chatter. Ashwood makes the claim that she left Marcus for a period of separation in the summer of 1921, when she allegedly discovered that Amy and Marcus were living together. Amy alleges that any romantic contact that the two had begun strictly after his divorce to Ashwood. Marcus divorced Ashwood while she was abroad in England in June of 1922. He had the divorce approved in Kansas City without her knowledge and  a month later on  July 27, 1922, Marcus married Amy in Baltimore. Ashwood felt betrayed by her friend and husband. Adler claims that Ashwood and Jacques were best friends. The two were said to have know each other as teens in Jamaica, and Jacques was said to have been Ashwood’s chief bridesmaid in her wedding to Garvey. She attempted to have the second marriage annulled upon returning from by filing a suit to deny the validity of her divorce to Garvey. In this later Amy Jacques Garvey was named the correspondent. The effort to have this divorce nullified failed leaving Amy Jacques as Garvey’s legitimate wife. Unfortunately this whole debacle led to the severance of this long time friendship.

At the beginning of their marriage Amy believed that her responsibility should be that of comfort to her husband. Just several months after marrying Marcus, Amy began editing volume 1 of the Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey (a compilation of Marcus’s writings and speeches). Her initial purpose in editing this journal was to provide a means for the general public to form their own opinion about Marcus Garvey and Garveyism without the stigma provided by bias sources of the time. Amy’s place in both the movement and the organization soon shifted. Instead taking a back seat to her husband and working in the shadow to strengthen his platform, Amy became a face of UNIA and a representation of the females of this organization. In her book Garvey and Garveyism, Amy alleges that a significant amount of Garvey’s speeches were a direct result of her own work; whether it be the crafting of specific lines or the research that went into it. In this book Amy describes how Marcus implored her to read through front page articles and other prominent new sources, and explain their importance to him. After gathering the information he needed he would then use it for his own speeches.

Amy Jacques was said to have been an excellent speaker, having toured the country with and without her husband. After making a return from their western tour, Marcus was scheduled to speak in New York and Amy was not a part of the program. Adler alleges that the audience was so inspired by her previous speeches and published works that when Garvey went up to speak the crowd chanted: “We want Mrs. Garvey!” Even though she was not scheduled to speak at the event she was allowed to because of the mass outcry by the crowd. Marcus Garvey was said to have taken to the podium and say that he was grateful that his wife was his wife and not a rival. Adler believes that Marcus Garvey failed to show any appreciation for his wife despite her growing fame in the public forum. Adler continues on forward to say: “He expected self-sacrificing behavior from his wife and perhaps was threatened by her rival status, rendering him unable to acknowledge her capabilities and accomplishments.” Amy however did not pose an initial threat to Garvey. Given her strong beliefs in her position as his wife, and the structure of the organization, Amy took a back seat, as did other women in the UNIA. UNIA presented itself as an equal-rights organization, but many women complained that they were given unfair positions. The grievances were made public at UNIA’s national convention in 1922. Sexism found a means to thrive even in spite of UNIA’s commitment to sexual equality. This being the case women like Amy Jacques Garvey found a way to become invaluable to the organization.

In light of unforeseen circumstances Amy Jacques Garvey was forced to assume lead role in UNIA. Marcus Garvey was convicted of mail fraud on  June 21,  1923; less than a year after marrying Amy Jacques. After being convicted Marcus was sent to Tombs prison in Upstate New York where he spent three months before being released on bond. While in prison, Garvey failed to win his appeals, and as a direct result was sentenced to five years in Atlanta Federal Penitentiary on  February 8, 1925. It is at this time that Amy assumed leadership of UNIA. In addition to speaking all over the country to raise money for Marcus’s defense fund, Amy edited and published volume 2 of the Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey, two volumes of Marcus’s poetry, The Tragedy of White Injustice, and Selections from the Poetic Meditations of Marcus Garvey. While doing this she worked tirelessly with lawyers to get her husband out of jail, and kept UNIA moving forward by delivering speeches and meeting with the leadership of the group occasionally. Despite the effort that Amy Jacques put forward in keeping Garvey’s dream alive, Adler alleges that Garvey never showed any appreciation toward her. Amy Jacques never assumes official leadership of the organization because Marcus would not allow it.

In November 1963, Amy Jacques Garvey visited Nigeria as a guest of Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe who was being installed as that nation’s first Governor-General. She published her own book, Garvey and Garveyism in 1963, as well as a booklet, Black Power in America: The Power of the Human Spirit in 1968. Her final work was the Philosophy and Opinions of Marcus Garvey volume III, written in conjunction with E.U. Essien-Udom.

Amy Jacques Garvey died on  July 25, 1973, in her native Kingston, Jamaica, and was interred in the churchyard of Saint Andrew’s Parish Church.

    by Kimberly Roots

Sleepy Hollow fans, prepare to have your wigs flipped.
The supernatural drama has cast… Alias spydaddy Victor Garber as Ichabod’s dad, TVLine has learned exclusively.

Details are sparse, but Garber will appear in at least one upcoming episode of the Fox series. In the Nov. 25 episode, Ichabod spoke fondly of his father, reminiscing about spending time with him while the elder Crane was on holiday from teaching at Oxford.

    Hip-Hop Dancers Try Hands-Only ‘Fingerbreaking’
    By Pia Catton Dec. 2, 2013 10:31 p.m. ET

Fans around the world regularly contact Lilach Chen after watching her break-dancing videos, asking her where she got her shoes.

Her answer: Look for key chains, where the miniature sneakers often dangle. “Mine were from an Adidas store in Germany,” she says.

Ms. Chen’s admirers are watching for the shoes stuck to her fingertips, which add visual kick to her series of hands-only break-dancing videos, dubbed “fingerbreaking,” that have been viewed about 32 million times on YouTube.

The name makes it sound like the stuff of organized crime, but
fingerbreaking is for dancers, not thugs. Performed with fingers and,
for specialty spins and poses, the entire hand, it is a manual adaptation of break dancing, one that is developing a following on video-sharing gadgets (because the “dancer” is so small, it lends itself well to smartphone cinematography).

This year, the full-body break-dancing competition Red Bull BC One, now in its 10th year, added a slot for fingerbreaking. The first World Champion—Differ Kim of Seoul, South Korea—was announced Friday, the day before the main competition.

Kanye demands perfection during Tampa show

    excerpt:
As you might guess by now, it didn’t take long for 7,408 Tampa fans to get a taste of the demanding perfectionism of West during his “Yeezus Tour” concert at the Forum on Saturday.

Just a few seconds into his third song, West demanded the music be stopped as he stormed off to the back of the stage. The lighting scheme wasn’t right, and those offending lights were to be turned off, “now,” he said, along with some harsher language for his technical crew that can’t be repeated here.

About a minute later it was fixed and West returned to deliver an inspired, crowd-thrilling “Send It Up” without missing a beat.

    — –President Obama Pledges $100 Million In Funding To Help Beat AIDS

    – –President Obama announced a new initiative on Monday to advance the work to develop a cure for HIV, pledging $100 million to fund research projects in this area. The president also promised that the United States will donate up to $5 billion over the next three years to the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as long as other countries pool their resources to raise $10 billion for the effort.

The new project, which will be housed under the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will focus on developing “new therapies” to combat the virus. The $100 million in funding will be reassigned from AIDS research grants that are expiring over the next three years.

Obama’s announcement came on the heels of the 25th annual World AIDS Day, which the international community marked on Sunday. Although there’s been significant global progress in the fight against the HIV/AIDS epidemic, there’s still no cure for the HIV virus on the immediate horizon. The president hopes that greaterinvestment from the United States could help change that.

          • Aquagranny911

LOL, we all still do that about Costco! When anyone in the Fam says “I’m going to Price Club” we know exactly what they mean.

And I will keep on saying Obamacare myself. Daughter has a bumper sticker she had made special 3 years ago that says: “I ♥ Obamacare” right after the law passed.

We are loyal in my Fam. The passage of Obamacare kept her insurance & saved her life. We never forget that!

Every draft analysis of the rookie guard Michael Carter-Williams — who is the frontrunner for the 2013-14 Rookie of the Year award — talked about how the young guard out of Syracuse came from a great family.

But according to a new story in the Philadelphia Inquirer, his family might have an even more outsize influence on the young player than previously thought.

His mother Mandy Carter-Zegarowski and her best friend, Tracie Tracy, handle Carter-Williams’ business affairs….

“They are taking a proactive approach to make sure he doesn’t spend all his money in a couple of years.”

    How so?

His rookie contract guarantees him $4.5 million the next two years, which could total $10 million if the Sixers pick up the final two seasons. “But his salary is deposited into a trust he can’t touch for three years. Carter-Williams is living off endorsement deals with Nike and Panini trading cards,” according to the report.

If you’re interested in Carter-Williams’ unique upbringing, the story is worth the read.http://www.blackenterprise.com/lifestyle/sixers-michael-carter-williams-cant-touch-nba-salary-for-three-years/

It’s good that they’re handling the money properly. Too many young athletes are broke before their career is over. While reading this article another one caught my eye, just scandalous.

And the children get nothing, he had just divorced her. He didn’t have time to change his policy over to his kids. And this heffa has spent every dime of it. Click on the more link and check out her pic. She looks like a trifling ass.

      • MsKitty

Sigh. Reminds me of when Malik Sealy passed. His wife went through what money was left in his estate, and then tried to hit up some of his NBA pals for money. Like it never even occurred to her that she might actually have to go and get a job to support her kids. SMH.

        • Alma98

          SMH

      • Aquagranny911

I don’t usually wade into stuff like this here but I followed your link etc & added up the numbers & she only spent a little over half that million. Most was on a house that was definitely upscale & beyond my means but wasn’t outrageous for someone use to living well & needing to house 6 kiddos comfortably.

Even the $32,000 for an Escalade wasn’t out of line when you need a solid vehicle to haul around 8 passengers safely.

I agree she could have skipped the Lexus & the trip to NYC but I don’t see that she spent all the $$$ on furs, jewelry or caca. Her ex-hubby earned $55 million over his career. Where did all that go?

Her in-laws now have the remainder of that million & some other money. Are they in custody of those children or just in custody of the money? I smell some family drama here but I don’t have all the story or the details.

        My two pesos…

        • Alma98

The money was supposed to be for the children AG. My guess is a lot of that 55mil went to agents, family and other hangers on. Not to mention buying stuff they didn’t need. Also he was murdered right after the divorce was final. So it seems like he never got a chance to put his house in order.

          • Aquagranny911

That is a message about “keeping your house in order” We can never know the day or the hour & the young often think they will live forever just they way they want to.

          • Alma98

Absolutely I tell my kids this all the time.
            Nothing is forever.

I wish more professional athletes had this kind of wise instruction in their families. The amount of money that has been wasted with nothing to show for it is obscene.

They should set up shop and represent more athletes!!!

        • pamelabrown53

I think it’s because so many athletes are so young when they come into sudden riches they’re dazled and don’t have the maturity to handle “rags to riches”.

Boehner: ‘We’ll See’ About Offering An Obamacare Alternative
    SAHIL KAPUR – DECEMBER 3, 2013, 10:30 AM EST

House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) dodged a question Tuesday about whether the GOP will bring up a legislative alternative to Obamacare for a vote in 2014.

    “We’ll see,” he said.

At a press briefing in the Capitol, Boehner swiped the Affordable Care Act and called for “patient-centered” solutions to health care.

“When you look at Obamacare which is a government-centered health care delivery system, that’s not what the American people want,” he said. “The American people want to be able to pick their own type of health insurance. They want to be able to pick their own doctor. They want to be able to pick their own hospital. That’s what a patient-centered system looks like.”

There are numerous Republican bills to reform health care but none of them have consensus support within the party or the backing of leadership.

“…they just let him lie and lie…”. Wouldn’t a real journalist ask why they keep voting to repeal “Obamacare” for 40+ times without a concrete plan to replace it?
Boggles the mind. The good news, IMO, is Obamacare will be spread from person to person and further undermine the travesty called our MSM.

The church I went to after I first got saved always taught Xmas and Easter were pagan holidays so the whole real meaning of XMas thing was always bunk to me.

          • Aquagranny911

That is so true. The spread of the Catholic church either stamped out pagan holidays or incorporated them into their theology to convert the pagans.

The Spanish were masters at that. If you look at some of the celebrations in Mexico now & among the Native peoples here you can really see it, if you know what to look for.

          • JojoRaze

Exactly, AQ. All over the New World, in Carnival, Santeria, vodoun, etc, you see the remnants of a pagan religion mixed with Catholicism. Since the churches I’ve gone to a really Protestant based even if they weren’t mainline protestants, that was always a no-no for me.

          • Aquagranny911

Understood! As a Latina raised as Catholic, we do love our ritual. Goes back to our pagan roots I guess. If I would call myself anything now, it is Unitarian because I do not practice as a Catholic anymore for various reasons I won’t bother you with.

Unitarians are all inclusive & celebrate everyone & that works for me. I’m not trying to be flippant about your practice or beliefs. I’m open because I do believe that Infinite Spirit cherishes every one of us & we are blessed by the grace of Dios.

          • Miranda

You mean Santa didn’t bring myrrh gold and a Xbox to the baby Jesus?

          • Aquagranny911

NO! That was the Magi. Celebrated in January when in many countries & cultures gifts are exchanged, the Fiesta of the Kings can be a BFD for some. But I don’t think those Kings had access to Xbox then, just saying….

            My snark to yours…..

          • JojoRaze

No Mir, like my former church elder said, ‘switch the last three letters in Santa around and you get Satan.’ Lol

          • Aquagranny911

Whoa! I have heard that before & was a little taken aback by that idea but I can understand how a minister who wants people to focus on the meaning of Cristo rather than what society does would use that to make people pay attention.

Christmas really has become such a terrible travesty of a commercial holiday that it is really sad.

I will tell you that I despised this idea of Santa & never gave in to that when my Kiddos were small & I am proud that they are doing the same with their own children.

Wow. Besides the great sense of perspective the artists of this time had mastered the photographic effect. You can feel the chill in the air. The water effect on the cobblestone is magnificent. Thank you crazycanuck.

Love this painting, so moody & evocative of rainy days I experienced some places I lived. Actually, the street & buildings remind me a bit of some parts of Madrid. We were there in March once when it was drizzling rain & cold. You can feel that in this painting. It is making me want a coat!

Loving your art shares, CC! This rocks!

——-On May 26, Harrison Okene, 29, was aboard a Chevron
oil boat named the AHT Jascon-4 in the Atlantic Ocean, just off the
coast of Nigeria, when it began to sway and eventually capsize.

For 3 days, Okene, who had been thrown from a bathroom when the boat turned over, managed to survive in a tiny air pocket 100 feet underwater without light, food or water, until he was miraculously rescued by a crew on a body recovery mission.

    - – —The Iran Deal Is Not Munich, Dammit – -

—–Another yayhoo went full Godwin yesterday:
Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX) on Monday compared the interim Iranian nuclear deal to Britain’s appeasement of Nazi Germany, according to the Hill.

“Prime Minister Chamberlain would have been proud after the West gave the snake oil salesman of the desert, Mr. Rouhani, exactly what he
wanted: time and money to pursue his quest for nuclear intimidation,”
Poe said on the House floor, as recorded by the Hill.

    - – —SNIP – –

John Schindler wrote an excellent post over at The XX Committee entirely debunking the Iran/Munich thing. The salient passage:

I am, however, sure that the “Munich” analogy bears absolutely no resemblance to what is going on in the Middle East now, and ought to be shelved, perhaps permanently. Operation PERSIAN FREEDOM is not on the table, no matter what overheated pundits tell you, so let the diplomats and spies do what they do and win their quiet victories over Tehran.

Edward Domain: My Affordable Care Act Enrollment Experience

This is insane. No one I know pays this much for health insurance, so when Healthcare.Gov was announced, I was cautiously optimistic- I had also gotten a letter from Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Illinois informing me my policy was being cancelled. After I chose my plan rated ‘gold’ here is my new bill for health insurance under Obamacare: I am saving $265.85/mo under Obamacare, for a total savings of $3,190.20/year This plan is far better than what I had before. My current plan has a deductible of $3,000 and has a $20 co-pay. Under Obamacare, my new plan has a $750 deductible and $30 co-pay for doctor’s visits.

I hope PBO’s presidential library enshrines this bullshit. So every POC walks thru the exhibits knows that their American experience is real, that we are not crazy or hyper-sensitive. If they can do this to him….well our only logical recourse is to join and recruit membership for the No Fucks To Give Club.

Does this dude suffer from Bipolar Disorder? The behavior plus the grandiose delusions make me wonder if he is suffering a manic episode of epic proportions. If that’s so the crash & subsequent depressive phase could be bad. I really feel sad for him not to have someone who loves him enough to intervene before it gets even worse.
